Bioinformatics tools are imperative for the in depth analysis of heterogeneous high-throughput data. Most of the software tools are developed by specific laboratories or groups or companies wherein they are designed to perform the required analysis for the group. However, such software tools may fail to capture "what the community needs in a tool". Here, we describe a novel community-driven approach to build a comprehensive functional enrichment analysis tool. Using the existing FunRich tool as a template, we invited researchers to request additional features and/or changes. Remarkably, with the enthusiastic participation of the community, we were able to implement 90% of the requested features. FunRich enables plugin for extracellular vesicles wherein users can download and analyse data from Vesiclepedia database. By involving researchers early through community needs software development, we believe that comprehensive analysis tools can be developed in various scientific disciplines.

Udgivelsesdato: 2009-Feb, Immunoreactive corticosterone and corticosterone metabolites (ICCM) were quantified in excreta of permanently single housed (n=10) and permanently pair housed (n=20) roosters. The pair housed roosters were separated and single housed, and ICCM were quantified in the droppings before and during 15 days after separation. There was no statistically significant difference in ICCM excretion in the droppings between the permanently single or pair housed roosters. After separation, however, the previously pair housed roosters showed a significantly transient elevated excretion of ICCM in droppings the second day after separation indicating that the separation and relocation is associated with an activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. The excretion of ICCM in droppings was not correlated to the concentration of ICCM in droppings. It is thus important that excretion of ICCM be expressed as amount excreted per time unit since the total excretion is dependant on both concentration of ICCM and amount of droppings produced.

We advocate that all urine-or feces-should be collected, and that excretion of stress sensitive molecules should be expressed as amounts excreted per time unit per kg body-weight, rather than being expressed as concentrations in samples. Urine and feces excretion varies significantly within and between animals over time, which may render simple concentration measures of molecules of little biological relevance.

El litoral atlántico andaluz tiene una extensión aproximada de 300 Km, en el que se diferencian dos sectores de gran importancia: la costa correspondiente al Golfo de Cádiz, fachada al mar de la llamada Depresión del Guadalquivir y la costa del sur de la provincia de Cádiz, donde se cortan bruscamente las sierras de La Plata, Retín, etc . El convenio suscrito el 24 de octubre de 1980 entre la Universidad de Sevilla y el CEOTMA para la realización del Estudio Ecológico del Litoral Atlántico Andaluz tenía por objeto facilitar a la Administración una documentación ecológica sobre el litoral (Cartografía de Unidades Ambientales) y una previsión de impactos (Cartografía Automática mediante ordenador)). Este convenio canp1emta un estdio anterior llevado a cabo como una Acción Prioritaria del P.D.T.C. de Andalucía en 1977 y que comprendió el estudio del medio físico, el paisaje, la infraestructura, el planeamiento y la población en todo el litoral andaluz.
