Model order reduction involves constructing a reduced-order approximation of a high-order model while retaining its essential characteristics. This reduced-order model serves as a substitute for the original one in various applications such as simulation, analysis, and design. Often, there's a need to maintain high accuracy within a specific time or frequency interval, while errors beyond this limit can be tolerated. This paper addresses time-limited and frequency-limited model order reduction scenarios for linear systems with quadratic outputs, by generalizing the recently introduced structure-preserving balanced truncation algorithm. To that end, limited interval system Gramians are defined, and the corresponding generalized Lyapunov equations governing their computation are derived. Additionally, low-rank solutions for these equations are investigated. Next, balanced truncation algorithms are proposed for time-limited and frequency-limited scenarios, each utilizing its corresponding limited-interval system Gramians. The proposed algorithms ensure accurate results within specified time and frequency intervals while preserving the quadratic-output structure. Two benchmark numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithms, showcasing their ability to achieve superior accuracy within the desired time or frequency interval.

The transport of nanoplastics (NPs) through porous media is influenced by dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from agricultural organic inputs. Here, cotransport of NPs with three types of DOM (biocharDOM (BCDOM), wheat strawDOM (WSDOM), and swine manureDOM (SMDOM)) was investigated in saturated goethite (GT)-coated sand columns. The results showed that codeposition of 50 nm NPs (50NPs) with DOM occurred due to the formation of a GT-DOM-50NPs complex, while DOM loaded on GT-coated sand and 400 nm NPs (400NPs) aided 400NPs transport due to electrostatic repulsion. According to the quantum chemical calculation, humic acid and cellulose played a significant role in 50NPs retardation. Owing to its high concentration, moderate humification index (HIX), and cellulose content, SMDOM exhibited the highest retardation of 50NPs transport and promoting effect on 400NPs transport. Owing to a high HIX, the effect of BCDOM on the mobility of 400NPs was higher than that of WSDOM. However, high cellulose content in WSDOM caused it to exhibit a 50NPs retardation ability that was similar to that of BCDOM. Our results highlight the particle size selectivity and significant influence of DOM type on the transport of NPs and elucidate their quantum and colloidal chemical-interface mechanisms in a typical agricultural environment.

Biochemical oxidation and reduction are the principle of biological water and wastewater treatment, in which electron donor and/or acceptor shall be provided. Elemental sulfur (S0) as a non-toxic and easily available material with low price, possesses both reductive and oxidative characteristics, suggesting that it is a suitable material for water and wastewater treatment. Recent advanced understanding of S0-respiring microorganisms and their metabolism further stimulated the development of S0-based technologies. As such, S0-based biotechnologies have emerged as cost-effective and attractive alternatives to conventional biological methods for water and wastewater treatment. For instance, S0-driven autotrophic denitrification substantially lower the operational cost for nitrogen removal from water and wastewater, compared to the conventional process with exogenous carbon source supplementation. The introduction of S0 can also avoid secondary pollution commonly caused by overdose of organic carbon. S0 reduction processes cost-effectively mineralize organic matter with low sludge production. Biological sulfide production using S0 as electron acceptor is also an attractive technology for metal-laden wastewater treatment, e.g. acid mine drainage. This paper outlines an overview of the fundamentals, characteristics and advances of the S0-based biotechnologies and highlights the functional S0-related microorganisms. In particular, the mechanisms of microorganisms accessing insoluble S0 and feasibility to improve S0 bio-utilization efficiency are critically discussed. Additionally, the research knowledge gaps, current process limitations, and required further developments are identified and discussed. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

In this paper, we first study in detail the relationship between minimal linear codes and cutting blocking sets, which were recently introduced by Bonini and Borello, and then completely characterize minimal linear codes as cutting blocking sets. As a direct result, minimal projective codes of dimension $3$ and $t$-fold blocking sets with $t\ge 2$ in projective planes are identical objects. Some bounds on the parameters of minimal codes are derived from this characterization. This confirms a recent conjecture by Alfarano, Borello and Neri in [a geometric characterization of minimal codes and their asymptotic performance, arXiv:1911.11738, 2019] about a lower bound of the minimum distance of a minimal code. Using this new link between minimal codes and blocking sets, we also present new general primary and secondary constructions of minimal linear codes. As a result, infinite families of minimal linear codes not satisfying the Aschikhmin-Barg's condition are obtained. In addition to this, the weight distributions of two subfamilies of the proposed minimal linear codes are established. With propensity score matching technique, we created a well-balanced cohort by matching patients who received CTX/NTZ plus PCT (62 patients) with those receiving PCT alone (248 patients) in a ratio of 1:4. The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS). All potential prognostic factors were involved in the multivariate analysis with the Cox regression hazards model. Kaplan–Meier curves were used to compare the survival status, and log-rank test to measure the significance.Results: The median follow-up time was 27.7 months (range, 1–126 months). No significant difference in survival was observed between the CTX/NTZ plus PCT group and PCT group. (3-year OS: 63.0% vs 58.1%; P=0.485)

The expression levels of LC3II, TUNEL, BAX/BCL-2, LC3II/LC3I and P62, Beclin1, mTOR, and p-mTOR (ser2448) proteins in muscle were examined by fluorescence immunohistochemistry or Western blotting.Results: Results show that catalpol improved the results of the grid walking tests by reducing the percentage of foot slips, which increased the gastrocnemius muscle wet weight (R/L), enhanced AChE expression at the MEP, and enlarged the section area of the muscle. The expression of LC3II and TUNEL was significantly inhibited by catalpol. The BAX/BCL-2 ratio was significantly increased in muscles of denervated and control groups. Patients and methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of NPC patients with PICC insertions from February 2, 2007 to December 25, 2014 in Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Centre. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the correlations between risk factors and symptomatic PICC-VTE. Results: Of the 1,363 NPC patients, 76 developed symptomatic VTE. In univariable analysis, body mass index (BMI), Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) score, metastasis stage (M stage), and VTE history were associated with symptomatic PICC-VTE. Following multivariable adjustments, BMI (OR 0.900, p=0.007), ECOG score (OR 4.162, p=0.011), M stage (OR 2.717, p=0.019), and VTE history (OR 109.772, p<0.001) were still statistically significant. Conclusion: PICC-VTE is a common complication in NPC patients, with an incidence of 5.6% in our analysis. Those with VTE history and lower BMI and worse ECOG performance score metastatic NPC patients are more susceptible to symptomatic PICC-related thrombosis and thus may require prophylactic anticoagulation. Media plays an important role in corporate debt financing decisions. However, no literature investigations the impact of media attention affect debt maturity structure. Based on the theories of asymmetric information and reputation, we use 5988 sample data of firms listed in Shenzhen and Shanghai stock exchanges in the period 2010-2014 and apply Heckman two-stage model to empirically test the impact mechanism of media coverage on debt maturity structure of listed companies. We explore the impact of media coverage on the debt maturity structure under different ownership nature. The results show that, favorable media coverage and debt maturity structure of listed companies are positive related. Favorable media coverage can increase the level of debt maturity structure of a listed company. Furthermore, unfavorable media coverage is negatively related to f debt maturity structure. Unfavorable media coverage can decrease the level of corporate debt maturity structure. Media coverage has a different impact on debt maturity structure with different nature of ownership. Specifically, with respect to state-owned enterprises, the impact of favorable media coverage on increasing debt maturity structure is more apparent on non-state-owned enterprises, and the impact of unfavorable media coverage on decreasing debt maturity structure is more apparent on state-owned enterprises. Based on the theories of reputation and asymmetric information, we use 5988 sample data of firms listed in Shenzhen and Shanghai stock exchanges in the period 2010-2014 and apply Heckman two-stage model to empirically test the impact mechanism of media coverage on debt financing costs of listed companies. We explore the impact of media coverage on the debt financing costs of the listed companies under different ownership nature. The results show that, media coverage has a significant impact on debt financing costs of listed companies, in which, positive media coverage reduces company’s debt financing costs while negative media coverage increases the company’s debt financing costs. Media coverage has a different impact on debt financing costs of listed firms with different nature of ownership. Specifically, with respect to state-owned enterprises, the impact of media coverage on easing debt financing costs is more apparent on non-state-owned enterprises. While with respect to non-state-owned enterprises, the impact of media coverage on increasing debt financing costs is more apparent on state-owned enterprises. Immunohistochemistry analyses were performed to characterize the expression of Sox10 in NPC. Kaplan–Meier survival and Cox regression analyses were employed to evaluate the prognosis of 105 NPC patients.Results: The results showed that Sox10 was markedly overexpressed in human NPC tissues. Analysis of clinicopathological parameters showed that high Sox10 expression was significantly correlated with the clinical stage (P=0.032), T classification (P=0.034), and lymph node metastasis (P=0.03). Cox regression analyses further showed that Sox10 expression was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (P=0.005). This is the first time Sox10 has shown its importance in predicting NPC progressiveness and survival outcomes.Conclusion: Sox10 serves as a potential biomarker for NPC patients. Antiviral immunity controlled by RNA interference (RNAi) in plants and animals is thought to specifically target only viral RNAs by the virus-derived small interfering RNAs (siRNAs). Here we show that activation of antiviral RNAi in Arabidopsis plants is accompanied by the production of an abundant class of endogenous siRNAs mapped to the exon regions of more than 1,000 host genes and rRNA. These virus-activated siRNAs (vasiRNAs) are predominantly 21 nucleotides long with an approximately equal ratio of sense and antisense strands. Genetically, vasiRNAs are distinct from the known plant endogenous siRNAs characterized to date and instead resemble viral siRNAs by requiring Dicer-like 4 and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase 1 (RDR1) for biogenesis. However, loss of exoribonuclease4/thylene-insensitive5 enhances vasiRNA biogenesis and virus resistance without altering the biogenesis of viral siRNAs. We show that vasiRNAs are active in directing widespread silencing of the target host genes and that Argonaute-2 binds to and is essential for the silencing activity of vasiRNAs. Production of vasiRNAs is readily detectable in Arabidopsis after infection by viruses from two distinct supergroups of plant RNA virus families and is targeted for inhibition by the silencing suppressor protein 2b of Cucumber mosaic virus. These findings reveal RDR1 production of Arabidopsis endogenous siRNAs and identify production of vasiRNAs to direct widespread silencing of host genes as a conserved response of plants to infection by diverse viruses. A possible function for vasiRNAs to confer broad-spectrum antiviral activity distinct to the virus-specific antiviral RNAi by viral siRNAs is discussed.

Widespread geological preservation of biogenic magnetite makes it important to assess how such particles contribute to sedimentary paleomagnetic signals. We studied a sediment core from the South China Sea that passes the strict empirical criteria for magnetic "uniformity" used in relative paleointensity studies. Such assessments are based routinely on bulk magnetic parameters that often fail to enable identification of mixed magnetic mineral assemblages. Using techniques that enable component-specific magnetic mineral identification, we find that biogenic and detrital magnetites occur in approximately equal concentrations within the studied sediments. We analyzed normalized remanence signals associated with the two magnetite components to assess whether co-occurring biogenic and detrital magnetites record geomagnetic information in the same way and with the same efficiency. Paleomagnetic directions for the two components have no phase lag, which suggests that the biogenic and detrital magnetites acquired their magnetizations at equivalent times. However, we find that the biogenic magnetite is generally 2-4 times more efficient as the detrital magnetite in contributing to the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) despite their approximately equal magnetic contributions. Variations in the concentration and efficiency of remanence acquisition of the two components suggest that a significant part of the NRM is controlled by nongeomagnetic factors that will affect relative paleointensity recording. We recommend that methods suited to the detection of variable recording efficiency associated with biogenic and detrital magnetites should be used on a routine basis in relative paleointensity studies.

It is generally accepted that Neoproterozoic extension and dispersal of the supercontinent Rodinia was associated with mantle plume or superplume activities. However, plume-generated contemporaneous continental flood basalts (CFBs) have rarely been identified. In this study, we present geochronological and geochemical evidence for the basalts from the Liufangzui Formation of the Huashan Group in the Dahongshan region of east-central China. A representative sample yields a SHRIMP U–Pb zircon age of 824 ± 9 Ma, interpreted as the crystallization age of the rocks. Geochemically, these basalts belong to the subalkaline tholeiite series and display slight enrichments in light rare earth elements (LREE) and varying degrees of deficiency of high field strength elements (HFSE) such as Nb, Ta, and Ti. This pattern is very similar to that of CFBs from the Bikou Group and Tiechuanshan Formation in the northwestern Yangtze block in China and Siberia in Russia. The basaltic magmas underwent partially-fractional crystallization during ascent, but were not intensely influenced by crustal contamination. The characteristic element ratios and negative Hf isotopic analyses (ϵHf(t) = −6.6–2.6) in zircons indicate that the parental magmas of the basalts might have been derived from an enriched lithospheric mantle rather than from the depleted mantle such as normal mid-ocean ridge basalts (N-MORBs).The geochemical signatures and regional geological characteristics show that these basalts were formed along intraplate continental rifts rather than in island arcs or ocean basins. Considering the coeval basic volcanic rocks in South China, we propose that these Huashan Group basalts represent the remnants of plume-generated CFBs and have close spatiotemporal ties with a coeval basic igneous province in Australia. Our results support the Neoproterozoic location of the South China block adjacent to southeastern Australia in the reconstruction model of the supercontinent Rodinia.

Radiotherapy is the primary treatment modality. The role of systemic therapy has become more prominent. Based on multiple phase III studies and meta-analyses, concurrent cisplatin-based chemoradiotherapy is the current standard of care for locally advanced disease (American Joint Committee on Cancer manual [7th edition] stages II–IVb). The reported failure-free survival rates from phase II trials are encouraging for induction + concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Data from ongoing phase III trials comparing induction + concurrent chemoradiotherapy with concurrent chemoradiotherapy will validate the results of these phase II studies. Intensity-modulated radiotherapy techniques are recommended if the resources are available. Locoregional control exceeding 90% and reduced xerostomia-related toxicities can now be achieved using intensity-modulated radiotherapy, although distant control remains the most pressing research problem. The promising results of targeted therapy and Epstein–Barr virus-specific immunotherapy from early clinical trials should be validated in phase III clinical trials. Alumina and zirconia (Y-TZP) based bilayer ceramic dental composites with core to veneer thickness ratio (R-value) of 1: 1 and 2:1 were fabricated through an established dental laboratory multi-steps-firing procedure. Their flexural strengths were determined by three-point bending test. A combinational approach of numerical simulations by finite element analysis associated with direct fractography investigation was applied to elucidate the origins of fracture and interfacial delamination and the influence of physical properties mismatch between core ceramic and veneer porcelain. A newly developed argon ion beam cross-section polishing technique was used to conduct fine polishing required for close investigating of the core-veneer interface under scanning electron microscope. For the same core ceramic no significant difference was observed in determined flexural strength of two groups of bilayer composites. The flexural strength of the bilayer composites is similar to 55% and similar to 35% of the core ceramics and achieved similar to 90% and 70-77% of the predicated value respectively in case of Y-TZP and alumina based composites. Numerical simulations by finite element analysis indicate that the often observed interfacial delamination in Y-TZP based bilayer composites has a clear origin of the severe physical properties mismatch between veneer porcelain and core ceramics, particularly the flexural strength, which may be prevented by increasing the flexural strength of veneer porcelain to above 300 MPa. We investigate the dynamics of a domain wall in a ferromagnetic nanowire with spin-transfer torque. The critical current condition is obtained analytically. Below the critical current, we get the static domain wall solution, which shows that the spin-polarized current cannot drive a domain wall moving continuously. In this case, the spin-transfer torque plays both the anti-precession and anti-damping roles, which counteracts not only the spin precession driven by the effective field but also Gilbert damping of the moment. Above the critical value, the dynamics of the domain wall exhibits the novel screw-pitch effect characterized by the temporal oscillation of domain wall velocity and width, respectively. Both the theoretical analysis and numerical simulation demonstrate that this novel phenomenon arises from the conjunctive action of Gilbert damping and spin-transfer torque. We also find that the roles of spin-transfer torque are completely opposite for the cases below and above the critical current.

The Black Scholes equation is a fundamental model for derivative pricing. Modifying its assumptions will lead to more realistic but mathematically more complicated models. This dissertation consists of analytical and numerical studies about one particular type of nonlinear Black Scholes models, whose nonlinearity lies in the highest spatial derivative 1 with discontinuous coefficient function. First we smooth out the discontinuous term and focus only on the nonlinearity. We consider the case where the volatility is a smooth function and present some basic existence and uniqueness results. To study the discontinuity we simplify the problem by discretizing the Partial Differential Equation PDE only in time and consider the evolution in a given tiny time step from initial data. We perform convergence and perturbation analysis to the Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) with discontinuous coefficient and obtain some insight of how the curves, where the discontinuity occurs, evolve in the space-time plane for the PDE. Last we obtain numerical results for the nonlinear PDE in the setting of a moving boundary problem.

Monoacylglycerol lipase (MGL) is a serine hydrolase involved in the biological deactivation of the endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoyl-sn-glycerol (2-AG). Previous efforts to design MGL inhibitors have focused on chemical scaffolds that irreversibly block the activity of this enzyme. Here, we describe two naturally occurring terpenoids, pristimerin and euphol, which inhibit MGL activity with high potency (median effective concentration, IC(50) = 93 nM and 315 nM, respectively) through a reversible mechanism. Mutational and modeling studies suggest that the two agents occupy a common hydrophobic pocket located within the putative lid domain of MGL, and each reversibly interacts with one of two adjacent cysteine residues (Cys(201) and Cys(208)) flanking such pocket. This previously unrecognized regulatory region might offer a molecular target for potent and reversible inhibitors of MGL.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A has been implicated in this context, but there are conflicting reports as to whether it is a contributory or protective factor. Differential splicing of the VEGF-A gene produces multiple functional isoforms including VEGF-Aa and VEGF-Ab, a member of the inhibitory family. To date there is no clear information on the role of VEGF-A in IPF. OBJECTIVES To establish VEGF-A isoform expression and functional effects in IPF. METHODS We used tissue sections, plasma, and lung fibroblasts from patients with IPF and control subjects. In a bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis model we used wild-type MMTV mice and a triple transgenic mouse SPC-rtTATetoCreLoxP-VEGF-Ato conditionally induce VEGF-A isoform deletion specifically in the alveolar type II (ATII) cells of adult mice. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS IPF and normal lung fibroblasts differentially expressed and responded to VEGF-Aa and VEGF-Ab in terms of proliferation and matrix expression. Increased VEGF-Ab was detected in plasma of progressing patients with IPF. In a mouse model of pulmonary fibrosis, ATII-specific deficiency of VEGF-A or constitutive overexpression of VEGF-Ab inhibited the development of pulmonary fibrosis, as did treatment with intraperitoneal delivery of VEGF-Ab to wild-type mice. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that changes in the bioavailability of VEGF-A sourced from ATII cells, namely the ratio of VEGF-Aa to VEGF-Ab, are critical in development of pulmonary fibrosis and may be a paradigm for the regulation of tissue repair.
