1. MultiModal Ensemble Approach Leveraging Spatial, Skeletal, and Edge Features for Enhanced Bangla Sign Language Recognition

Abstract: Sign language is the predominant mode of communication for individuals with auditory impairment. In Bangladesh, BdSL or Bangla Sign Language is widely used among the hearing-impaired population. However, because of the general public's limited awareness of sign language, communicating with them using BdSL can be challenging. Consequently, there is a growing demand for an automated system capable of efficiently understanding BdSL. For automation, various Deep Learning (DL) architectures can be employed to translate Bangla Sign Language into readable digital text. The automation system incorporates live cameras that continuously capture images, which a DL model then processes. However, factors such as lighting, background noise, skin tone, hand orientations, and other aspects of the image circumstances may introduce uncertainty variables. To address this, we propose a procedure that reduces these uncertainties by considering three modalities: spatial information, skeleton awareness, and edge awareness. We introduce three image pre-processing techniques alongside three CNN models. The CNN models are combined using nine distinct ensemble meta-learning algorithms, with five of them being modifications of averaging and voting techniques. In the result analysis, our individual CNN models achieved higher training accuracy at 99.77%, 98.11%, and 99.30%, respectively, than most of the other state-of-the-art image classification architectures, except for ResNet50, which achieved 99.87%. Meanwhile, the ensemble model attained the highest accuracy of 95.13% on the testing set, outperforming all individual CNN models. This analysis demonstrates that considering multiple modalities can significantly improve the system's overall performance in hand pattern recognition.

4. Enhancing Interpretability in Deep Learning-Based Inversion of 2-D Ground Penetrating Radar Data: An Explainable AI (XAI) Strategy

Abstract: Recent advancements in deep learning (DL) have demonstrated potential for interpreting ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data, which is crucial for near surface geophysical investigations. However, the complexity of DL models and the challenge of interpreting their decision-making processes remain significant obstacles. This study addresses these challenges by applying explainable AI (XAI) techniques - specifically, local interpretable model-agnostic explanations (LIMEs) and gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM) - to elucidate the DL-based inversion process for 2-D GPR data. Our novel approach marks the first application of these XAI techniques in the context of GPR data analysis for subsurface utility mapping, revealing critical features and hierarchical feature extraction processes that drive the model's predictions. By offering detailed insights into the model's internal operations, this research not only enhances the interpretability of DL models in geophysical applications but also establishes a new standard for incorporating XAI in subsurface utility detection, paving the way for more accurate, reliable, and understandable DL applications in geophysical studies.

Abstract: Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

8. Spatiotemporal Distribution of Mangrove at Kuala Sepetang Forest Reserve, Malaysia, Using Remotely Sensed Data

Abstract: Mangrove plays an important role in mitigating the impact of climate change by sequestering CO2 as the main greenhouse gas emission. They maintain water quality and clarity, filtering pollutants and trapping sediments originating from land. However, mangroves have been reported to be threatened by land conversion for other activities. The objectives of this chapter were: (1) to derive Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) in the study area and (2) to map the status of the mangrove species distribution from year 2004 to 2019. Matang Mangrove Forest Reserves (MMFR) at Kuala Sepetang, Perak, Malaysia were determined using multi-temporal satellite imageries by Landsat TM and Sentinel-2 from year 2004 to 2019. The classification of land use land cover (LULC) was performed using the ISODATA Clustering method and Maximum Likelihood Classifier (MCL) method along with vegetation index differencing technique. The overall classification accuracy was 90% with Kappa statistic accuracy of 0.89. The results indicated changes in area of the mangrove forest to a cleared area occurred at 1340.01–1666.30 ha. (2004–2019). Combinations of these approaches were useful for change detection and an indication of the nature of these changes. The result also revealed that Rhizophora apiculata and Avicennia sonneratia are still being preserved and estimated to be 70% of the total species. Temporal changes of mangrove species for the 15–period showed that the mangrove species of R. apiculata was 58%, A. sonneratia was 6%, Bruguiera parviflora 8% and other mangrove species 28% in year 2019 as compared to 2004 in which R. apiculata was 71%, A. Sonneratia 6%, B. parviflora 10% and other mangrove species 14%. The findings indicated that the status and loss of mangroves due to direct impacts from surrounding land development activities.

9. Machine Learning Driven Mental Stress Detection on Reddit Posts Using Natural Language Processing

Abstract: Abstract People’s mental conditions are often reflected in their social media activity due to the internet's anonymity. Psychiatric issues are often detected through such activities and can be addressed in their early stages, potentially preventing the consequences of unattended mental disorders like depression and anxiety. In this paper, the authors have implemented machine learning models and used various embedding techniques to classify posts from the famous social media blog site Reddit as stressful and non-stressful. The dataset used contains user posts that can be analyzed to detect patterns in the social media activity of those diagnosed with mental disorders. This paper uses different NLP (Natural Language Processing) tools such as ELMo (Embeddings from Language Models) word embeddings, BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) tokenizers, and BoW (Bag of Words) approach to create word/sentence data that can be fed to machine learning models. The results of each method have been discussed. The results achieved a top F1 score of 0.76, a Precision score of 0.71, and a Recall of 0.74 using only the preprocessed texts and machine learning algorithms to classify the posts. The results achieved by this paper are significant and have the potential to be applied in real-world scenarios to analyze mental stress among social media users. Although this paper focuses on data from Reddit, the techniques used can be transferred to similar social media platforms and could help solve the growing mental health crisis.

10. A comparative analysis of Indian sign language recognition using deep learning models

Abstract: Sign language is a form of communication where people use bodily gestures, particularly those of hands and arms. This method of communication is put into motion when spoken communication is unattainable or disfavored. There are very few people who can translate sign language and readily understand them. It would be convenient for the hearing-impaired to have a platform where their sign language could be translated easily. Hence, through this study, with the help of artificial neural networks, we wish to compare how various widely implemented deep learning architectures respond to faultless translation of Indian sign language for the native audience. This research would streamline the development of software tools that can accurately predict or translate ISL. For the purpose of understanding the method of training the machine and exploring our model’s performance without any optimizations, a Convolutional Neural Network architecture was implemented. Over the course of our research, there have been several Pre-trained Transfer Learning Models implemented that have yielded promising results. The research aims to contrast how various convolutional neural networks perform while translating Indian Sign Actions on a custom dataset that factors in illumination, angles, and different backgrounds to provide a balanced and distinctive set of images. The goal of this study is to make clear comparisons between the various deep learning frameworks. Hence, a fresh Indian sign language dataset is introduced. Since every dataset in the field of deep learning has special properties that may be utilized for the betterment of the existing models, the development of a fresh dataset could be viewed as a development in the field. The optimum model for our task: classification of these gestures is found to be ResNet-50 (Accuracy = 98.25% and F1-score = 99.34%), and the least favorable was InceptionNet V3 (Accuracy = 66.75%, and F1-score = 70.89%).

11. Interpretability of simple RNN and GRU deep learning models used to map land susceptibility to gully erosion.

Among the various methods used to explore and map gully erosion, advanced learning techniques, especially deep learning (DL) models, are highly capable of spatial mapping and can provide accurate predictions for generating spatial maps of gully erosion at different scales (e.g., local, regional, continental, and global). In this paper, we applied two DL models, namely a simple recurrent neural network (RNN) and a gated recurrent unit (GRU), to map land susceptibility to gully erosion in the Shamil-Minab plain, Hormozgan province, southern Iran. To address the inherent black box nature of DL models, we applied three novel interpretability methods consisting of SHaply Additive explanation (SHAP), ceteris paribus and partial dependence (CP-PD) profiles and permutation feature importance (PFI). Using the Boruta algorithm, we identified seven important features that control gully erosion: soil bulk density, clay content, elevation, land use type, vegetation cover, sand content, and silt content. These features, along with an inventory map of gully erosion (based on a 70 % training dataset and 30 % test dataset), were used to generate spatial maps of gully erosion using DL models. According to the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) statistic performance assessment measure, the simple RNN model (with KS = 91.6) outperformed the GRU model (with KS = 66.6). Based on the results from the simple RNN model, 7.4 %, 14.5 %, 18.9 %, 31.2 % and 28 % of total area of the plain were classified as very-low, low, moderate, high and very-high hazard classes, respectively. 13. Two-Speed Deep-Learning Ensemble for Classification of Incremental Land-Cover Satellite Image Patches

Abstract: High-velocity data streams present a challenge to deep learning-based computer vision models due to the resources needed to retrain for new incremental data. This study presents a novel staggered training approach using an ensemble model comprising the following: (i) a resource-intensive high-accuracy vision transformer; and (ii) a fast training, but less accurate, low parameter-count convolutional neural network. The vision transformer provides a scalable and accurate base model. A convolutional neural network (CNN) quickly incorporates new data into the ensemble model. Incremental data are simulated by dividing the very large So2Sat LCZ42 satellite image dataset into four intervals. The CNN is trained every interval and the vision transformer trained every half interval. We call this combination of a complementary ensemble with staggered training a “two-speed” network. The novelty of this approach is in the use of a staggered training schedule that allows the ensemble model to efficiently incorporate new data by retraining the high-speed CNN in advance of the resource-intensive vision transformer, thereby allowing for stable continuous improvement of the ensemble. Additionally, the ensemble models for each data increment out-perform each of the component models, with best accuracy of 65% against a holdout test partition of the RGB version of the So2Sat dataset.

14. Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) for interpreting the contributing factors feed into the wildfire susceptibility prediction model.

Abstract: One of the worst environmental catastrophes that endanger the Australian community is wildfire. To lessen potential fire threats, it is helpful to recognize fire occurrence patterns and identify fire susceptibility in wildfire-prone regions. The use of machine learning (ML) algorithms is acknowledged as one of the most well-known methods for addressing non-linear issues like wildfire hazards. It has always been difficult to analyze these multivariate environmental disasters because modeling can be influenced by a variety of sources of uncertainty, including the quantity and quality of training procedures and input variables. Moreover, although ML techniques show promise in this field, they are unstable for a number of reasons, including the usage of irrelevant descriptor characteristics when developing the models. Explainable AI (XAI) can assist us in acquiring insights into these constraints and, consequently, modifying the modeling approach and training data necessary. In this research, we describe how a Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) model can be utilized to interpret the results of a deep learning (DL) model that is developed for wildfire susceptibility prediction. Different contributing factors such as topographical, landcover/vegetation, and meteorological factors are fed into the model and various SHAP plots are used to identify which parameters are impacting the prediction model, their relative importance, and the reasoning behind specific decisions. The findings drawn from SHAP plots show the significant contributions made by factors such as humidity, wind speed, rainfall, elevation, slope, and normalized difference moisture index (NDMI) to the suggested model's output for wildfire susceptibility mapping. We infer that developing an explainable model would aid in comprehending the model's decision to map wildfire susceptibility, pinpoint high-contributing components in the prediction model, and consequently control fire hazards effectively.

15. A novel approach for quantifying similarities between different debris flow sites using field investigations and numerical modelling

Abstract: Debris flows are geomorphological processes that affect the landscape evolution process of any region. In this study, an integrated methodology is proposed to identify the chance of further debris flows and quantify the similarities between debris flow locations, materials and rheology, using field and laboratory investigations and remote sensing data. The method was tested for four failure-triggered debris flow sites in the Western Ghats of India, using dimensionless parametric similarity values ranging from 0 to 1. The maximum parametric similarity was observed as 0.84 when comparing the flow accumulation values of Sites 3 and 4, and the maximum overall site similarity was 0.68. The calibrated rheological parameters of one site were found to be satisfactory in modelling the shape of debris flow at all other sites. The findings can be used to identify similar hotspots in the region and to simulate debris flows for quantitative hazard assessment.

18. Winter wheat yield prediction in the conterminous United States using solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence data and XGBoost and random forest algorithm

Abstract: Predicting crop yield before harvest and understanding the factors determining yield at a regional scale is vital for global food security, supply chain management in agribusiness, crop and insurance pricing and optimising crop production. Often satellite remote sensing data, environmental data or their combinations are used to model crop yield at a regional scale. However, their contribution, including that of recently developed remote sensing data like solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and near-infrared reflectance of vegetation (NIRv), are not explored sufficiently. This study aims to assess the contribution of weather, soil and remote sensing data to estimate wheat yield prediction at a regional scale. For this, we employed four types of remote sensing data, thirteen climatic variables, four soil variables, and nationwide yield data of 14 years combined with statistical learning methods to predict winter wheat yield in the Conterminous United States (CONUS) and access the role of predicting variables. Machine-learning algorithms were used to build yield prediction models in different experimental settings, and predictive performance was evaluated. Further, the relative importance of predictor variables for the models was assessed to gain insight into the model's behaviour. NIRv and SIF data are found to be promising for crop yield prediction. The model with only NIRv data explained up to 64% of the variability in yield, and adding SIF data improved it to 69%. We also found that vegetation indices, SIF, climate and soil data all contribute unique and overlapping information to crop yield prediction. The study also identified important variables and the time of the growing period when these variables have higher explanatory power for winter wheat yield prediction. This study enhanced our knowledge of yield-predicting variables, which will contribute to optimising the yield and developing better yield prediction models.

19. A Comprehensive Review of Geospatial Technology Applications in Earthquake Preparedness, Emergency Management, and Damage Assessment

Abstract: The level of destruction caused by an earthquake depends on a variety of factors, such as magnitude, duration, intensity, time of occurrence, and underlying geological features, which may be mitigated and reduced by the level of preparedness of risk management measures. Geospatial technologies offer a means by which earthquake occurrence can be predicted or foreshadowed; managed in terms of levels of preparation related to land use planning; availability of emergency shelters, medical resources, and food supplies; and assessment of damage and remedial priorities. This literature review paper surveys the geospatial technologies employed in earthquake research and disaster management. The objectives of this review paper are to assess: (1) the role of the range of geospatial data types; (2) the application of geospatial technologies to the stages of an earthquake; (3) the geospatial techniques used in earthquake hazard, vulnerability, and risk analysis; and (4) to discuss the role of geospatial techniques in earthquakes and related disasters. The review covers past, current, and potential earthquake-related applications of geospatial technology, together with the challenges that limit the extent of usefulness and effectiveness. While the focus is mainly on geospatial technology applied to earthquake research and management in practice, it also has validity as a framework for natural disaster risk assessments, emergency management, mitigation, and remediation, in general.

20. Evaluating the effectiveness and robustness of machine learning models with varied geo-environmental factors for determining vulnerability to water flow-induced gully erosion

Abstract: Assessing and mapping the vulnerability of gully erosion in mountainous and semi-arid areas is a crucial field of research due to the significant environmental degradation observed in such regions. In order to tackle this problem, the present study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of three commonly used machine learning models: Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, and Logistic Regression. Several geographic and environmental factors including topographic, geomorphological, environmental, and hydrologic factors that can contribute to gully erosion were considered as predictor variables of gully erosion susceptibility. Based on an existing differential GPS survey inventory of gully erosion, a total of 191 eroded gullies were spatially randomly split in a 70:30 ratio for use in model calibration and validation, respectively. The models’ performance was assessed by calculating the area under the ROC curve (AUC). The findings indicate that the RF model exhibited the highest performance (AUC = 89%), followed by the SVM (AUC = 87%) and LR (AUC = 87%) models. Furthermore, the results highlight those factors such as NDVI, lithology, drainage, and density were the most influential, as determined by the RF, SVM, and LR methods. This study provides a valuable tool for enhancing the mapping of soil erosion and identifying the most important influencing factors that primarily cause soil deterioration in mountainous and semi-arid regions.

Abstract: Despite the growing number of confident binary black hole coalescences observed through gravitational waves so far, the astrophysical origin of these binaries remains uncertain. Orbital eccentricity is one of the clearest tracers of binary formation channels. Identifying binary eccentricity, however, remains challenging due to the limited availability of gravitational waveforms that include effects of eccentricity. Here, we present observational results for a waveform-independent search sensitive to eccentric black hole coalescences, covering the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO and Virgo detectors. We identified no new high-significance candidates beyond those that were already identified with searches focusing on quasi-circular binaries. We determine the sensitivity of our search to high-mass (total mass $M>70$ $M_\odot$) binaries covering eccentricities up to 0.3 at 15 Hz orbital frequency, and use this to compare model predictions to search results. Assuming all detections are indeed quasi-circular, for our fiducial population model, we place an upper limit for the merger rate density of high-mass binaries with eccentricities $0 < e \leq 0.3$ at $0.33$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ at 90\% confidence level., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: DNA loop extrusion by structural-maintenance-of-chromosome (SMC) complexes has emerged as a primary organizing principle for chromosomes. The mechanism by which SMC motor proteins extrude DNA loops is still unresolved and much debated. The ring-like structure of SMC complexes prompted multiple models where the extruded DNA is topologically or pseudotopologically entrapped within the ring during loop extrusion. However, recent experiments showed the passage of roadblocks much bigger than the SMC ring size, suggesting a nontopological mechanism. Recently, attempts were made to reconcile the observed passage of large roadblocks with a pseudotopological mechanism. Here we examine the predictions of these pseudotopological models and find that they are not consistent with new experimental data on SMC roadblock encounters. Particularly, these models predict the formation of two loops and that roadblocks will reside near the stem of the loop upon encounter—both in contrast to experimental observations. 24. Two-Speed Deep-Learning Ensemble for Classification of Incremental Land-Cover Satellite Image Patches

Abstract: High-velocity data streams present a challenge to deep learning-based computer vision models due to the resources needed to retrain for new incremental data. This study presents a novel staggered training approach using an ensemble model comprising the following: (i) a resource-intensive high-accuracy vision transformer; and (ii) a fast training, but less accurate, low parameter-count convolutional neural network. The vision transformer provides a scalable and accurate base model. A convolutional neural network (CNN) quickly incorporates new data into the ensemble model. Incremental data are simulated by dividing the very large So2Sat LCZ42 satellite image dataset into four intervals. The CNN is trained every interval and the vision transformer trained every half interval. We call this combination of a complementary ensemble with staggered training a “two-speed” network. The novelty of this approach is in the use of a staggered training schedule that allows the ensemble model to efficiently incorporate new data by retraining the high-speed CNN in advance of the resource-intensive vision transformer, thereby allowing for stable continuous improvement of the ensemble. Additionally, the ensemble models for each data increment out-perform each of the component models, with best accuracy of 65% against a holdout test partition of the RGB version of the So2Sat dataset.

Abstract: Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT), developed by OpenAI, is a prominent AI model capable of understanding and generating human-like text based on input. Since terms and concepts of spatial information are contextual, the applications of ChatGPT on spatial information disciplines can be biased by the perceptions and perspectives of ChatGPT towards spatial information. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the real magnitude and level of comprehension of spatial information by ChatGPT is essential before exploring its potential applications in spatial information disciplines. This article aims to investigate how ChatGPT evaluates spatial information and its potential contributions to 4th Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0). ChatGPT has summarized a notable perspective on evaluating and utilizing spatial information in the context of the Industry 4.0. The result of this study shows that ChatGPT has a good understanding on contextual concepts related to spatial information. However, it exhibits potential biases and challenges, as its responses lean towards the technological and analytical aspects. The results provide a crucial understanding on how to leverage ChatGPT’s benefits to the fullest while recognizing its constraints, with the aim to enhance the efficacy from the perspective of applications linked to spatial information.

26. An explainable AI (XAI) model for landslide susceptibility modeling

Abstract: Landslides are among the most devastating natural hazards, severely impacting human lives and damaging property and infrastructure. Landslide susceptibility maps, which help to identify which regions in a given area are at greater risk of a landslide occurring, are a key tool for effective mitigation. Research in this field has grown immensely, ranging from quantitative to deterministic approaches, with a recent surge in machine learning (ML)-based computational models. The development of ML models, in particular, has undergone a meteoritic rise in the last decade, contributing to the successful development of accurate susceptibility maps. However, despite their success, these models are rarely used by stakeholders owing to their “black box” nature. Hence, it is crucial to explain the results, thus providing greater transparency for the use of such models. To address this gap, the present work introduces the use of an ML-based explainable algorithm, SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP), for landslide susceptibility modeling. A convolutional neural network model was used conducted in the CheongJu region in South Korea. A total of 519 landslide locations were examined with 16 landslide-affected variables, of which 70% was used for training and 30% for testing, and the model achieved an accuracy of 89%. Further, the comparison was performed using Support Vector Machine mode, which achieved an accuracy of 84%. The SHAP plots showed variations in feature interactions for both landslide and non-landslide locations, thus providing more clarity as to how the model achieves a specific result. The SHAP dependence plots explained the relationship between altitude and slope, showing a negative relationship with altitude and a positive relationship with slope. 27. InSAR time-series analysis and susceptibility mapping for land subsidence in Semarang, Indonesia using convolutional neural network and support vector regression

Abstract: Global sea-level rise due to climate change is a critical problem for coastal cities. One of the coastal cities in Indonesia, Semarang, is in danger of being submerged by seawater due to flooding, which is exacerbated by land subsidence. Time-series analysis based on persistent scatterer (PS) interferometry usually suffers from sparse measurement points (MP), and thus does not completely cover the study area with low coherence. In this study, we utilized improved combined scatterers interferometry with optimized point scatterers (ICOPS) to increase the MP density. We also compared the optimization of the ICOPS method based on support vector regression (SVR) with convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithms. The ICOPS-CNN showed better model performance and MP density, and was less time-consuming. Further land subsidence analysis was conducted in Semarang using susceptibility mapping. The land subsidence susceptibility map from the standalone deep learning (DL) algorithm (CNN = 0.833) outperformed the standalone machine learning (ML) algorithm (SVR = 0.820). The hybrid DL algorithm with grey wolf optimizer (GWO) (CNN-GWO = 0.907) exhibited the highest accuracy, followed by the hybrid ML algorithm (SVR-GWO = 0.843). The accuracy was consistent with the comparison between the susceptibility maps and the ICOPS measurements, resulting in a susceptibility map based on CNN-GWO with the highest accuracy (0.889). Land subsidence monitoring using ICOPS based on CNN and susceptibility mapping based on a hybrid DL algorithm (CNN-GWO) can be used by local governments to improve urban development planning in Semarang and its surrounding areas.

28. A novel approach for quantifying similarities between different debris flow sites using field investigations and numerical modelling

Abstract: Debris flows are geomorphological processes that affect the landscape evolution process of any region. In this study, an integrated methodology is proposed to identify the chance of further debris flows and quantify the similarities between debris flow locations, materials and rheology, using field and laboratory investigations and remote sensing data. The method was tested for four failure-triggered debris flow sites in the Western Ghats of India, using dimensionless parametric similarity values ranging from 0 to 1. The maximum parametric similarity was observed as 0.84 when comparing the flow accumulation values of Sites 3 and 4, and the maximum overall site similarity was 0.68. The calibrated rheological parameters of one site were found to be satisfactory in modelling the shape of debris flow at all other sites. The findings can be used to identify similar hotspots in the region and to simulate debris flows for quantitative hazard assessment.

29. Estimating Forest-Based Livelihood Strategies Focused on Accessibility of Market Demand and Forest Proximity

Abstract: Forests have an important role in the ecosystem and many people depend on it for their income and livelihood. Here, we analyzed the forest dependency of rural households in West Bengal, India and evaluated the role of the proximity of forest and remoteness of the market in their livelihood patterns. Based on forest proximity and road accessibility, we classify the villages on the basis of four criteria - (a) high forest proximity with high road access (HFHA); (b) high forest proximity with low road access (HFLA); (c) low forest proximity with high road access (LFHA); and (d) low forest proximity with low road access (LFLA). Subsequently, we collected socioeconomic, demographic and forest product data of 200 households in the forest fringe of the Jhargram district in West Bengal via a door-to-door survey. Forest income is very significant to household income contribution in this study area. About 46.84% of income has been acquired through fuel wood and non-timber forest products (NTFPs) such as Mahua, Kendu leaf and Sal (Shorea robusta) seeds. Forest products comprise of about 30% of overall household income in the study area, with fuelwood being the most relevant forest product (46.8% of households income) followed by agroforestry (18.8%), fodder (12.0%), Sal leaf made plate (9.6%) and bamboo (8.1%). Forest proximity is positively correlated with increased income from forests as predicted, but remote villages have less income than villages with higher accessibility. The people of HFLA and LFLA zones have comparatively low incomes from the forest due to inaccessibility of markets for selling forest products and the value of products is also low (HFHA = Rs. 7815 ± 29,326, HFLA = Rs 5752 ± 17,450, LFHA = Rs 3357 ± 14,831, LFLA = Rs 572 ± 12,278). Abstract: Shoreline changing position along the coast is an immediate and long-term indicator determined by the interplaying driving forces across the dry and wet parts of coastal areas. Extreme waves, such as tsunamis, may result in a remarkable shift of shoreline position and a change of sediment transport regime, thus potentially inducing coastal hazards. This work investigates the multi-temporal changes and development of shorelines at the tsunami-affected coast nearly two decades after the Indian Ocean tsunami on 26 December 2004. Additionally, the dynamic responses of the coast to the man-made coastal structures as a means of protection measures during the observed period are also evaluated. This study uses the US Army’s Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) extension in the ArcGIS to calculate the multi-temporal shoreline changes and erosion/accretion rates. Multi-temporal shoreline vectors delineated from the LANDSAT satellite images are utilized to calculate the Net Shoreline Movement (NSM), End Point Rate (EPR), and Linear Regression Rate (LRR) for the respective short-term and decadal-term shoreline change analysis. The shoreline change rates are examined at the three shoreline segments at Aceh coast, the north tip of Sumatra Island of Indonesia. The results show that Segment A has the highest erosion rate due to the 2004 tsunami (− 395.19 m/year) compared to Segment B (− 26.46 m/year) and Segment C (− 74.26 m/year). The 2004 tsunami has changed the coastal states from erosional coast prior to the tsunami to accretional coast in Segment A and C, and the eastern side of Segment B in almost two decades since the tsunami. Consequently, ignoring such phenomena in designing coastal protection measures may lead to structural failures such the ones identified in the investigated coast. Thus, a thorough investigation of shoreline change is fundamental for coastal managers, particularly in determining appropriate coastal protection measures.

Abstract: Earthquakes are the most destructive natural hazards because of their adversely severe impacts on urban areas. Earthquakes affect people's lives and properties, thus captivating the extensive attention of seismologists. Carrying out probability and hazard assessment for the prevention, and reduction of mega-events and recovery will be of great significance in affected areas. Given that limited studies have attempted to estimate earthquake Spatial Probability Assessment (SPA) in the Arabian Peninsula, this study aims to evaluate the SPA and Earthquake Hazard Assessment (EHA). This study implements and evaluates various machine learning and explainable-AI (XAI) techniques for the estimation of SPA and EHA in the Arabian Peninsula, explores the contribution and highlights the importance of different factors in the development of AI-based models. A total of twelve factors ranging from seismological to geophysical factors were evaluated. Two machine learning models namely Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) and deep Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) along with three XAI approaches (i.e, Smart predictor, Smart Explainer and Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanation (LIME) model) were investigated. Results of the comparative earthquake SPA estimation demonstrated that the accuracy of 89% and 87% were achieved by LightGBM and RNN models. Moreover, the results of the XAI models show that the Smart Predictor provides better spatial outputs than the other evaluated XAI models. The stable factors identified by Smart Predictor were magnitude variation and earthquake frequency whereas the important factors were magnitude variation, earthquake frequency, depth variation, and seismic gap. Collectively, results of SPA show that, the Gulf of Aden, Red Sea, Iran, and Turkey are falling under a very-high SPA index (0.991–1). 32. Earthquake-induced liquefaction hazard mapping at national-scale in Australia using deep learning techniques

Abstract: Australia is a relatively stable continental region but not tectonically inert, having geological conditions that are susceptible to liquefaction when subjected to earthquake ground motion. Liquefaction hazard assessment for Australia was conducted because no Australian liquefaction maps that are based on modern AI techniques are currently available. In this study, several conditioning factors including Shear wave velocity (Vs30), clay content, soil water content, soil bulk density, soil thickness, soil pH, distance from river, slope and elevation were considered to estimate the liquefaction potential index (LPI). By considering the Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment (PSHA) technique, peak ground acceleration (PGA) was derived for 50 yrs period (500 and 2500 yrs return period) in Australia. Firstly, liquefaction hazard index (LHI) (effects based on the size and depth of the liquefiable areas) was estimated by considering the LPI along with the 2% and 10% exceedance probability of earthquake hazard. Secondly, ground acceleration data from the Geoscience Australia projecting 2% and 10% exceedance rate of PGA for 50 yrs were used in this study to produce earthquake induced soil liquefaction hazard maps. Thirdly, deep neural networks (DNNs) were also exerted to estimate liquefaction hazard that can be reported as liquefaction hazard base maps for Australia with an accuracy of 94% and 93%, respectively. As per the results, very-high liquefaction hazard can be observed in Western and Southern Australia including some parts of Victoria. This research is the first ever country-scale study to be considered for soil liquefaction hazard in Australia using geospatial information in association with PSHA and deep learning techniques. Abstract: One of the worst environmental catastrophes that endanger the Australian community is wildfire. To lessen potential fire threats, it is helpful to recognize fire occurrence patterns and identify fire susceptibility in wildfire-prone regions. The use of machine learning (ML) algorithms is acknowledged as one of the most well-known methods for addressing non-linear issues like wildfire hazards. It has always been difficult to analyze these multivariate environmental disasters because modeling can be influenced by a variety of sources of uncertainty, including the quantity and quality of training procedures and input variables. Moreover, although ML techniques show promise in this field, they are unstable for a number of reasons, including the usage of irrelevant descriptor characteristics when developing the models. Explainable AI (XAI) can assist us in acquiring insights into these constraints and, consequently, modifying the modeling approach and training data necessary. In this research, we describe how a Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) model can be utilized to interpret the results of a deep learning (DL) model that is developed for wildfire susceptibility prediction. Different contributing factors such as topographical, landcover/vegetation, and meteorological factors are fed into the model and various SHAP plots are used to identify which parameters are impacting the prediction model, their relative importance, and the reasoning behind specific decisions. The findings drawn from SHAP plots show the significant contributions made by factors such as humidity, wind speed, rainfall, elevation, slope, and normalized difference moisture index (NDMI) to the suggested model's output for wildfire susceptibility mapping. We infer that developing an explainable model would aid in comprehending the model's decision to map wildfire susceptibility, pinpoint high-contributing components in the prediction model, and consequently control fire hazards effectively.

34. Full-Resolution Lung Nodule Localization From Chest X-Ray Images Using Residual Encoder-Decoder Networks

Abstract: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, and early diagnosis is associated with a positive prognosis. Chest X-ray (CXR) provides an inexpensive imaging mode for lung cancer diagnosis. Computer vision algorithms have previously been proposed to assist human radiologists in this task; however, leading studies use down-sampled images and computationally expensive methods with unproven generalization. In contrast, this study localizes lung nodules from CXR images using efficient encoder-decoder neural networks that have been crafted to process full resolution input images, thereby avoiding signal loss resulting from down-sampling. Encoder-decoder networks are trained and tested using the Japanese Society of Radiological Technology dataset. The networks are used to localize lung nodules from an independent CXR dataset. These experiments allow for the determination of the optimal network depth, image resolution, and pre-processing pipeline for generalized lung nodule localization. We find that more subtle nodules are detected in earlier training epochs. Therefore, we propose a novel self-ensemble model from three consecutive epochs centered on the validation optimum. This ensemble achieved a sensitivity of 85% in 10-fold internal testing with false positives of 8 per image. A sensitivity of 81% is achieved at a false positive rate of 6 following morphological false positive reduction. This result is comparable to more computationally complex systems, but with a sub-second inference time that is faster than other methods presented in the literature. The proposed algorithm achieved excellent generalization results against a challenging external dataset with a sensitivity of 77% at a false positive rate of 7.6.

35. Spatio-temporal landslide forecasting using process-based and data-driven approaches: A case study from Western Ghats, India

Abstract: The number of rainfall-induced landslides and the resulting casualties are increasing worldwide. Efficient Landslide Early Warning Systems (LEWS) are the best way to reduce the risk due to such events, but the number of operational LEWS is still limited. A new data-driven approach for spatio-temporal landslide forecasting on a regional scale is proposed, integrating Landslide Susceptibility Maps (LSMs) using RF algorithm and probabilistic hydro-meteorological thresholds, considering both rainfall severity and antecedent soil wetness. The proposed method is also compared with two deterministic process-based approaches: Transient Rainfall Infiltration and Grid-based Regional Slope Stability (TRIGRS) and SHALSTAB, considering the spatial variability in soil thickness and properties, along with the rainfall data. The quantitative comparison is carried out for two test areas in the Western Ghats of India (Idukki and Wayanad), for two different spatial resolutions. The efficiency and area under the curve (AUC) values from a receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) were used to evaluate the performance of different models. The results for Idukki indicate that the efficiency values of the data-driven approach were improved by 4.67 % by using fine resolution DEM (digital elevation model) of 12.5 m resolution, while in the case of TRIGRS and SHALSTAB models, the improvements were 3.39 % and 1.83 %, respectively. For Wayanad, the improvement in efficiencies was further lesser, 2.59 % in the case of data-driven model, and 0.95 % and 0.73 % in the cases of TRIGRS and SHALSTAB, respectively. The maximum efficiency and AUC values were obtained by the data-driven model for both regions, with a spatial resolution of 12.5 m. Abstract: Assessing and mapping the vulnerability of gully erosion in mountainous and semi-arid areas is a crucial field of research due to the significant environmental degradation observed in such regions. In order to tackle this problem, the present study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of three commonly used machine learning models: Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, and Logistic Regression. Several geographic and environmental factors including topographic, geomorphological, environmental, and hydrologic factors that can contribute to gully erosion were considered as predictor variables of gully erosion susceptibility. Based on an existing differential GPS survey inventory of gully erosion, a total of 191 eroded gullies were spatially randomly split in a 70:30 ratio for use in model calibration and validation, respectively. The models’ performance was assessed by calculating the area under the ROC curve (AUC). The findings indicate that the RF model exhibited the highest performance (AUC = 89%), followed by the SVM (AUC = 87%) and LR (AUC = 87%) models. Furthermore, the results highlight those factors such as NDVI, lithology, drainage, and density were the most influential, as determined by the RF, SVM, and LR methods. This study provides a valuable tool for enhancing the mapping of soil erosion and identifying the most important influencing factors that primarily cause soil deterioration in mountainous and semi-arid regions.

Abstract: Road network extraction is a significant challenge in remote sensing (RS). Automated techniques for interpreting RS imagery offer a cost-effective solution for obtaining road network data quickly, surpassing traditional visual interpretation methods. The findings of this study demonstrate the enhanced road-extraction capabilities achieved by the ATP-QDCNNRE method when used with remote sensing imagery. The ATP-QDCNNRE method employs DL and a hyperparameter tuning process to generate high-resolution road segmentation maps. The basis of this approach lies in the QDCNN model, which incorporates quantum computing (QC) concepts and dilated convolutions to enhance the network's ability to capture both local and global contextual information. Dilated convolutions also enhance the receptive field while maintaining spatial resolution, allowing fine road features to be extracted. ATP-based hyperparameter modifications improve QDCNNRE road extraction. To evaluate the effectiveness of the ATP-QDCNNRE system, benchmark databases are used to assess its simulation results. 38. Hybrid Mode of Operation Schemes for P2P Communication to Analyze End-Point Individual Behaviour in IoT

Abstract: The Internet of Behavior is the recent trend in the Internet of Things (IoT), which analyzes the behaviour of individuals using huge amounts of data collected from their activities. The behavioural data collection process from an individual to a data center in the network layer of the IoT is addressed by the Routing Protocol for Low-powered Lossy Networks (RPL) downward routing policy. A hybrid mode of operation in RPL is designed to minimize the limitations of standard modes of operations in the downward routing of RPL. The existing hybrid modes use the common parameters, such as routing table capacity, energy level, and hop-count for making storing mode decisions at each node. However, none of these works have utilized the deciding parameters, such as number of Destination-Oriented Directed Acyclic Graph (DODAG) children, rank, and transmission traffic density for this purpose. In this article, we propose two hybrid MOPs for RPL focusing on the aspect of efficient downward communication for the Internet of Behaviors. The first version decides the mode of each node based on the rank and number of DODAG children of the node. In addition, the proposed Mode of Operation (MOP) has the provision to balance the task of a storing node that is currently running on low power and computational resources by a handover mechanism among the ancestors. The second version of the hybrid MOP utilizes the upward and downward transmission traffic probabilities together with 170 rule or 1D cellular automata to decide the operating mode of a node. The analysis on the upper bound on communication shows that both proposed works have communication overhead nearly equal to the storing mode. The experimental results also infer that the proposed adaptive MOP have lower communication overhead compared with standard storing modes and existing schemes ARPL, MERPL, and HIMOPD.

39. An explainable AI (XAI) model for landslide susceptibility modeling

Abstract: Landslides are among the most devastating natural hazards, severely impacting human lives and damaging property and infrastructure. Landslide susceptibility maps, which help to identify which regions in a given area are at greater risk of a landslide occurring, are a key tool for effective mitigation. Research in this field has grown immensely, ranging from quantitative to deterministic approaches, with a recent surge in machine learning (ML)-based computational models. The development of ML models, in particular, has undergone a meteoritic rise in the last decade, contributing to the successful development of accurate susceptibility maps. However, despite their success, these models are rarely used by stakeholders owing to their “black box” nature. Hence, it is crucial to explain the results, thus providing greater transparency for the use of such models. To address this gap, the present work introduces the use of an ML-based explainable algorithm, SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP), for landslide susceptibility modeling. A convolutional neural network model was used conducted in the CheongJu region in South Korea. A total of 519 landslide locations were examined with 16 landslide-affected variables, of which 70% was used for training and 30% for testing, and the model achieved an accuracy of 89%. Further, the comparison was performed using Support Vector Machine mode, which achieved an accuracy of 84%. The SHAP plots showed variations in feature interactions for both landslide and non-landslide locations, thus providing more clarity as to how the model achieves a specific result. The SHAP dependence plots explained the relationship between altitude and slope, showing a negative relationship with altitude and a positive relationship with slope. 40. Multi-air pollution risk assessment in Southeast Asia region using integrated remote sensing and socio-economic data products.

Abstract: Air pollution has massive impacts on human life and poor air quality results in three million deaths annually. Air pollution can result from natural causes, including volcanic eruptions and extreme droughts, or human activities, including motor vehicle emissions, industry, and the burning of farmland and forests. Emission sources emit multiple pollutant types with diverse characteristics and impacts. However, there has been little research on the risk of multiple air pollutants; thus, it is difficult to identify multi-pollutant mitigation processes, particularly in Southeast Asia, where air pollution moves dynamically across national borders. In this study, the main objective was to develop a multi-air pollution risk index product for CO, NO2, and SO2 based on Sentinel-5P remote sensing data from 2019 to 2020. The risk index was developed by integrating hazard, vulnerability, and exposure analyses. Hazard analysis considers air pollution data from remote sensing, vulnerability analysis considers the air pollution sources, and exposure analysis considers the population density. The novelty of this study lies in its development of a multi-risk model that considers the weights obtained from the relationship between the hazard and vulnerability parameters. The highest air pollution risk index values were observed in urban areas, with a high exposure index that originates from pollution caused by human activity. Multi-risk analysis of the three air pollutants revealed that Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines had the largest percentages of high-risk areas, while Indonesia had the largest total high-risk area (4361 km2). Using the findings of this study, the patterns and characteristics of the risk distribution of multiple air pollutants in Southeast Asia can be identified, which can be used to mitigate multi-pollutant sources, particularly with respect to supporting the clean air targets in the Sustainable Development Goals.

41. InSAR time-series analysis and susceptibility mapping for land subsidence in Semarang, Indonesia using convolutional neural network and support vector regression

Abstract: Global sea-level rise due to climate change is a critical problem for coastal cities. One of the coastal cities in Indonesia, Semarang, is in danger of being submerged by seawater due to flooding, which is exacerbated by land subsidence. Time-series analysis based on persistent scatterer (PS) interferometry usually suffers from sparse measurement points (MP), and thus does not completely cover the study area with low coherence. In this study, we utilized improved combined scatterers interferometry with optimized point scatterers (ICOPS) to increase the MP density. We also compared the optimization of the ICOPS method based on support vector regression (SVR) with convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithms. The ICOPS-CNN showed better model performance and MP density, and was less time-consuming. Further land subsidence analysis was conducted in Semarang using susceptibility mapping. The land subsidence susceptibility map from the standalone deep learning (DL) algorithm (CNN = 0.833) outperformed the standalone machine learning (ML) algorithm (SVR = 0.820). The hybrid DL algorithm with grey wolf optimizer (GWO) (CNN-GWO = 0.907) exhibited the highest accuracy, followed by the hybrid ML algorithm (SVR-GWO = 0.843). The accuracy was consistent with the comparison between the susceptibility maps and the ICOPS measurements, resulting in a susceptibility map based on CNN-GWO with the highest accuracy (0.889). Land subsidence monitoring using ICOPS based on CNN and susceptibility mapping based on a hybrid DL algorithm (CNN-GWO) can be used by local governments to improve urban development planning in Semarang and its surrounding areas.

42. A pre-trained deep-learning surrogate model for slope stability analysis with spatial variability

Abstract: This paper presents a pre-trained deep-learning surrogate model for the slope stability problem, which can be used to accelerate the stochastic analysis of slope stability with spatial variability. One major innovation is that the model is trained with a big dataset (>12000 data) covering common soil properties, spatial variabilities, and slope shapes such that the trained model is ready to make predictions without additional training or numerical simulations required. Other two minor contributions are: (1) special treatments for the irregular and varying boundaries of slopes and (2) novel techniques that allow the use of non-uniform mesh in data acquisitions. The proposed model is accurate with a mean-absolute-percentage-error of about 6% for the testing dataset. Seven cases of unseen data are also used to verify the model performance, including cases of different soil parameters, slope angles, and even different slope surfaces (e.g., concave and convex slopes, which are not used in training). The results show that the predict slope factor of safety is high consistent with the values from finite element simulations, and so is the obtained probability density functions. But the surrogate model takes much less computational effort (several minutes compared with hours of computing) – proving the effectiveness of our model for efficient stochastic analyses.

43. Iris Liveness Detection Using Fragmental Energy of Haar Transformed Iris Images Using Ensemble of Machine Learning Classifiers

Abstract: Contactless verification is possible with iris biometric identification, which helps prevent infections like COVID-19 from spreading. Biometric systems have grown unsteady and dangerous as a result of spoofing assaults employing contact lenses, replayed the video, and print attacks. The work demonstrates an iris liveness detection approach by utilizing fragmental coefficients of Haar transformed Iris images as signatures to prevent spoofing attacks for the very first time in the identification of iris liveness. Seven assorted feature creation ways are studied in the presented solutions, and these created features are explored for the training of eight distinct machine learning classifiers and ensembles. The predicted iris liveness identification variants are evaluated using recall, F-measure, precision, accuracy, APCER, BPCER, and ACER. Three standard datasets were used in the investigation. The main contribution of our study is achieving a good accuracy of 99.18% with a smaller feature vector. The fragmental coefficients of Haar transformed iris image of size 8 ∗ 8 utilizing random forest algorithm showed superior iris liveness detection with reduced featured vector size (64 features). Random forest gave 99.18% accuracy. Additionally, conduct an extensive experiment on cross datasets for detailed analysis. The results of our experiments show that the iris biometric template is decreased in size to make the proposed framework suitable for algorithmic verification in real-time environments and settings.

44. Machine Learning Driven Mental Stress Detection on Reddit Posts Using Natural Language Processing

Abstract: Abstract People’s mental conditions are often reflected in their social media activity due to the internet's anonymity. Psychiatric issues are often detected through such activities and can be addressed in their early stages, potentially preventing the consequences of unattended mental disorders like depression and anxiety. In this paper, the authors have implemented machine learning models and used various embedding techniques to classify posts from the famous social media blog site Reddit as stressful and non-stressful. The dataset used contains user posts that can be analyzed to detect patterns in the social media activity of those diagnosed with mental disorders. This paper uses different NLP (Natural Language Processing) tools such as ELMo (Embeddings from Language Models) word embeddings, BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) tokenizers, and BoW (Bag of Words) approach to create word/sentence data that can be fed to machine learning models. The results of each method have been discussed. The results achieved a top F1 score of 0.76, a Precision score of 0.71, and a Recall of 0.74 using only the preprocessed texts and machine learning algorithms to classify the posts. The results achieved by this paper are significant and have the potential to be applied in real-world scenarios to analyze mental stress among social media users. Although this paper focuses on data from Reddit, the techniques used can be transferred to similar social media platforms and could help solve the growing mental health crisis.

45. Decadal shoreline changes and effectiveness of coastal protection measures post-tsunami on 26 December 2004

Abstract: Shoreline changing position along the coast is an immediate and long-term indicator determined by the interplaying driving forces across the dry and wet parts of coastal areas. Extreme waves, such as tsunamis, may result in a remarkable shift of shoreline position and a change of sediment transport regime, thus potentially inducing coastal hazards. This work investigates the multi-temporal changes and development of shorelines at the tsunami-affected coast nearly two decades after the Indian Ocean tsunami on 26 December 2004. Additionally, the dynamic responses of the coast to the man-made coastal structures as a means of protection measures during the observed period are also evaluated. This study uses the US Army’s Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) extension in the ArcGIS to calculate the multi-temporal shoreline changes and erosion/accretion rates. Multi-temporal shoreline vectors delineated from the LANDSAT satellite images are utilized to calculate the Net Shoreline Movement (NSM), End Point Rate (EPR), and Linear Regression Rate (LRR) for the respective short-term and decadal-term shoreline change analysis. The shoreline change rates are examined at the three shoreline segments at Aceh coast, the north tip of Sumatra Island of Indonesia. The results show that Segment A has the highest erosion rate due to the 2004 tsunami (− 395.19 m/year) compared to Segment B (− 26.46 m/year) and Segment C (− 74.26 m/year). The 2004 tsunami has changed the coastal states from erosional coast prior to the tsunami to accretional coast in Segment A and C, and the eastern side of Segment B in almost two decades since the tsunami. Consequently, ignoring such phenomena in designing coastal protection measures may lead to structural failures such the ones identified in the investigated coast. Thus, a thorough investigation of shoreline change is fundamental for coastal managers, particularly in determining appropriate coastal protection measures.

46. Earthquake spatial probability and hazard estimation using various explainable AI (XAI) models at the Arabian peninsula

Abstract: Earthquakes are the most destructive natural hazards because of their adversely severe impacts on urban areas. Earthquakes affect people's lives and properties, thus captivating the extensive attention of seismologists. Carrying out probability and hazard assessment for the prevention, and reduction of mega-events and recovery will be of great significance in affected areas. Given that limited studies have attempted to estimate earthquake Spatial Probability Assessment (SPA) in the Arabian Peninsula, this study aims to evaluate the SPA and Earthquake Hazard Assessment (EHA). This study implements and evaluates various machine learning and explainable-AI (XAI) techniques for the estimation of SPA and EHA in the Arabian Peninsula, explores the contribution and highlights the importance of different factors in the development of AI-based models. A total of twelve factors ranging from seismological to geophysical factors were evaluated. Two machine learning models namely Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) and deep Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) along with three XAI approaches (i.e, Smart predictor, Smart Explainer and Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanation (LIME) model) were investigated. Results of the comparative earthquake SPA estimation demonstrated that the accuracy of 89% and 87% were achieved by LightGBM and RNN models. Moreover, the results of the XAI models show that the Smart Predictor provides better spatial outputs than the other evaluated XAI models. The stable factors identified by Smart Predictor were magnitude variation and earthquake frequency whereas the important factors were magnitude variation, earthquake frequency, depth variation, and seismic gap. Collectively, results of SPA show that, the Gulf of Aden, Red Sea, Iran, and Turkey are falling under a very-high SPA index (0.991–1). 47. A New Spatial Model for Ecological Suitability Assessment of Irrigated Farming in Jahrom County, Iran

Abstract: Agricultural suitability assessment is a process that requires spatial data, geo-information tools, and the expertise of a computer scientist to analyze the information. The main objective of this paper is to propose a new model (based on Iranian ecological model and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) model) for ecological suitability evaluation with geometric mean evaluation and calibration methods for better planning management of irrigated lands. Next, to verify and compare the proposed method with other well-known existing, methods such as, Boolean logic and MCE (WLC) models were used. For testing these models, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was used. Findings of this research showed that the proposed model by geo-mean and calibration (kappa=0.79) is the best among used methods. On the contrary, arithmetic mean method showed the lowest accuracy (kappa=0). So, these methods (geometric mean evaluation and calibration) have high flexibility in locating agricultural lands. Overall, this study can be used as a basic framework to evaluate ecological suitability for other regions with similar conditions because of its simplicity and high precision.

48. Google Earth Engine for Advanced Land Cover Analysis from Landsat-8 Data with Spectral and Topographic Insights

Abstract: The primary goal of this research is to see how effective cloud-based computing services such as Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform are at classifying multitemporal satellite images and producing high-quality land cover maps for the target year of 2020, with the possibility of using it on a larger-scale area such as metropolitan Melbourne as a test site. To create high-quality land cover maps, the GEE is utilized to analyze a total of 80 Landsat-8 images. The support vector machine (SVM) approach is used to classify the images. Moreover, we use spectral bands, spectral indices, and topographic parameters to improve classification and address the limitations of existing approaches for classification with restricted input variables. Furthermore, we apply a postprocessing strategy to increase the model's performance by removing the salt-and-pepper noise created by misclassified pixels in supervised classification results. The results demonstrate that given all parameters, the SVM approach achieves an overall accuracy (OA) and kappa accuracy of 88.47% and 85.34%, respectively. Following the implementation of the postprocessing technique, the OA and kappa improve to 92.90% and 90.99%, respectively. The results indicate that Landsat-8 multitemporal data, spectral indices, topographic components, and postprocessing techniques are all important in land cover mapping. Therefore, the use of freely accessible GEE technology and multitemporal Landsat-8 data ensures that decision makers have the resources they need to track land cover throughout the year.

49. Data-driven approaches to sustainable referral system design integrating the offline channel and the online channel

Abstract: The Chinese healthcare referral system is a hierarchical system that includes medical institutions at different levels to ensure high-quality medical resources available and accessible to patients in need. In this research, we formulate a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model to minimize the total cost of patients, including their transportation cost, treatment cost and purchase of home-care services in a novel two-way referral system incorporating telemedicine and home-care services. To deal with the uncertain requests in teleconsultation, an adaptive robust optimization method is applied to reformulate the chance constraint into a linear form. Moreover, the uncertainty set under the measurement of Kullback–Leibler divergence is introduced to use the information and tractably approximate the chance constraint. We have used real-world data to conduct numerical experiments to determine the sensitivity of the results concerning the changes in the parameters such as the government subsidy, the maximum service capacity and the cure rate of diseases in the telemedicine center. We also prove that our optimal strategy of patient allocation in the novel referral system with the current strategy achieves environmental and social sustainability by reducing travel to healthcare facilities(less GHG emissions) and less crowdedness in the comprehensive hospitals compared to the current strategy in the traditional system. Finally, managerial insights are provided to achieve better performance in the healthcare referral system.

50. Monitoring of three stages of paddy growth using multispectral vegetation index derived from UAV images

Abstract: Paddy cultivation in Malaysia plays a crucial role in food production, with a focus on improving crop quality and quantity. With current national self-sufficiency levels ranging between 67 and 70%, the Malaysian government intends to produce higher-quality crops and boost agricultural production. However, the prominent paddy-producing state of Kedah has witnessed a decline in yields over the years. To address this, the study explores the effectiveness of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with vegetation indices (VIs) for monitoring paddy plant health at various growth stages. Researchers acquired aerial imagery during two seasons in 2019, capturing three distinct growth stages: tillering (40 days after sowing), flowering (60 days after sowing), and ripening (100 days after sowing). These stages represent critical points in the paddy plant's life cycle. Agisoft Metashape software processed the images to extract VIs data. The study found that the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Blue Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (BNDVI) exhibited over 90% similarity. In contrast, the Normalized Difference Red Edge Index (NDRE), utilizing near-infrared and red-edge light reflections, demonstrated a unique relationship. NDRE outperformed NDVI and BNDVI with an R-squared value of 0.842, showcasing its superior accuracy, especially for dense crops like paddy plants sensitive to subtle changes in vegetation. In conclusion, this research highlights the potential of UAV-based VIs for effectively monitoring paddy plant health during different growth stages. The NDRE index, in particular, proves valuable for assessing dense crops, offering insights for precision agriculture and crop management in Malaysia.
