1. Spin-2 Green's Functions on Kerr in Radiation Gauge

Abstract

We construct retarded and advanced Green's functions for gravitational perturbations in Kerr in an ingoing radiation gauge. Our Green's functions have a frequency domain piece that has previously been obtained by Ori [Phys. Rev. D 67 (2003)] based on the Chrzanowski-Cohen-Kegeles metric reconstruction method. As is well known, this piece by itself is not sufficient to obtain an actual Green's function. We show how to complete it with a piece based on a method by Green et al. [Class. Quant. Grav. 37 (2020)]. The completion piece has a completely explicit form in the time-domain and is supported on pairs of points on the same outgoing principal null geodesic which are in the appropriate causal order. We expect our Green's functions to be useful for gravitational self-force calculations and other perturbation problems on Kerr spacetime., Comment: 43 pages

2. The first law of binary black hole scattering

Abstract

In the last decade, the first law of binary black hole mechanics played an important unifying role in the gravitational two-body problem. More recently, binary black hole scattering and the application of high-energy physics methods have provided a new avenue into this classical problem. In this Letter, we connect these two themes by extending the first law to the case of scattering orbits. We present derivations based on classical S-matrix, Hamiltonian, and pseudo-Hamiltonian methods, the last of which allows us to include dissipative effects for the first time. Finally, a "boundary to bound" map links this first law to the traditional bound-orbit version. Through this map a little-known observable for scatter orbits, the elapsed proper time, is mapped to the Detweiler redshift for bound orbits., Comment: 5 pages + supplemental material

Abstract

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is the first scientific endeavour to detect and study gravitational waves from space. LISA will survey the sky for Gravitational Waves in the 0.1 mHz to 1 Hz frequency band which will enable the study of a vast number of objects ranging from Galactic binaries and stellar mass black holes in the Milky Way, to distant massive black-hole mergers and the expansion of the Universe. Abstract

Gravitational waves are ripples in spacetime predicted by Einstein's theory of general relativity. Their first direct observational evidence came with the detection of a gravitational wave signal by the two LIGO interferometers in 2015, marking a historic event in gravitational physics. Accurate theoretical waveform templates are needed to detect the signals and to extract the information carried by gravitational waves. The space-based LISA interferometer, expected to fly in the mid-2030s, will be able to observe gravitational waves from sources that lie outside the sensitivity band of ground-based detectors. An example are extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs), binary systems composed of a stellar-mass compact object (the "secondary") and a supermassive black hole (the "primary"). EMRIs can be modelled using gravitational self-force theory: the small body is treated as a perturbation to the background spacetime of the primary. The motion is driven by a self-force, which arises from the interaction of the secondary with its own gravitational field. Although originally designed to describe EMRIs, the self-force formalism was found to be applicable also for binaries with intermediate mass ratios and nearly comparable masses. A few such systems have already been observed by the ground-based detectors of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration, and current modelling techniques struggle to accurately describe them. In this thesis, motivated by the prospect of detecting gravitational waves from binaries with small mass ratios, we study the motion of a non-spinning secondary in the spacetime of a supermassive primary. We restrict our analysis to quasi-circular orbits lying in the equatorial plane. The dissipative effect of the self-force leads to the secular decay of the orbit and to the final merger of the binary. The orbital motion can be divided into three stages. Abstract

We investigate the impact of post-adiabatic (1PA) terms on parameter estimation for extreme and intermediate mass-ratio inspirals using state-of-the-art waveform models. Our analysis is the first to employ Bayesian inference to assess systematic errors for 1PA waveforms. We find that neglecting 1PA terms introduces significant biases for the (small) mass ratio $\epsilon \gtrsim 10^{-5}$ for quasi circular orbits in Schwarzschild spacetime, which can be mitigated with resummed 3PN expressions at 1PA order. Moreover, we show that the secondary spin is strongly correlated with the other intrinsic parameters, and it can not be constrained for $\epsilon \lesssim 10^{-5}$. Abstract

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be a transformative experiment for gravitational wave astronomy, and, as such, it will offer unique opportunities to address many key astrophysical questions in a completely novel way. The synergy with ground-based and space-born instruments in the electromagnetic domain, by enabling multi-messenger observations, will add further to the discovery potential of LISA. The next decade is crucial to prepare the astrophysical community for LISA's first observations. This review outlines the extensive landscape of astrophysical theory, numerical simulations, and astronomical observations that are instrumental for modeling and interpreting the upcoming LISA datastream. To this aim, the current knowledge in three main source classes for LISA is reviewed; ultra-compact stellar-mass binaries, massive black hole binaries, and extreme or interme-diate mass ratio inspirals. The relevant astrophysical processes and the established modeling techniques are summarized. Likewise, open issues and gaps in our understanding of these sources are highlighted, along with an indication of how LISA could help making progress in the different areas. New research avenues that LISA itself, or its joint exploitation with upcoming studies in the electromagnetic domain, will enable, are also illustrated. Improvements in modeling and analysis approaches, such as the combination of numerical simulations and modern data science techniques, are discussed. This review is intended to be a starting point for using LISA as a new discovery tool for understanding our Universe.

Abstract

LISA, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, will usher in a new era in gravitational-wave astronomy. As the first anticipated space-based gravitational-wave detector, it will expand our view to the millihertz gravitational-wave sky, where a spectacular variety of interesting new sources abound: from millions of ultra-compact binaries in our Galaxy, to mergers of massive black holes at cosmological distances; from the beginnings of inspirals that will venture into the ground-based detectors' view to the death spiral of compact objects into massive black holes, and many sources in between. Central to realising LISA's discovery potential are waveform models, the theoretical and phenomenological predictions of the pattern of gravitational waves that these sources emit. This white paper is presented on behalf of the Waveform Working Group for the LISA Consortium. Abstract

Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be a transformative experiment for gravitational wave astronomy as it will offer unique opportunities to address many key astrophysical questions in a completely novel way. The synergy with ground-based and other space-based instruments in the electromagnetic domain, by enabling multi-messenger observations, will add further to the discovery potential of LISA. The next decade is crucial to prepare the astrophysical community for LISA's first observations. This review outlines the extensive landscape of astrophysical theory, numerical simulations, and astronomical observations that are instrumental for modeling and interpreting the upcoming LISA datastream. To this aim, the current knowledge in three main source classes for LISA is reviewed: ultra-compact stellar-mass binaries, massive black hole binaries, and extreme or intermediate mass ratio inspirals. The relevant astrophysical processes and the established modeling techniques are summarized. Likewise, open issues and gaps in our understanding of these sources are highlighted, along with an indication of how LISA could help make progress in the different areas. New research avenues that LISA itself, or its joint exploitation with studies in the electromagnetic domain, will enable, are also illustrated. Improvements in modeling and analysis approaches, such as the combination of numerical simulations and modern data science techniques, are discussed. 11. Gravitational waveforms for compact binaries from second-order self-force theory

Abstract

We produce gravitational waveforms for nonspinning compact binaries undergoing a quasicircular inspiral. Our approach is based on a two-timescale expansion of the Einstein equations in second-order self-force theory, which allows first-principles waveform production in milliseconds. Although the approach is designed for extreme mass ratios, our waveforms agree remarkably well with those from full numerical relativity, even for comparable-mass systems. 12. Adiabatic waveforms from extreme-mass-ratio inspirals: an analytical approach

Abstract

Scientific analysis for the gravitational-wave detector LISA will require theoretical waveforms from extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) that extensively cover all possible orbital and spin configurations around astrophysical Kerr black holes. However, on-the-fly calculations of these waveforms have not yet overcome the high dimensionality of the parameter space. To confront this challenge, we present a user-ready EMRI waveform model for generic (eccentric and inclined) orbits in Kerr spacetime, using an analytical self-force approach. Our model accurately covers all EMRIs with arbitrary inclination and black hole spin, up to modest eccentricity ($\lesssim 0.3$) and separation ($\gtrsim2$--$10M$ from the last stable orbit). In that regime, our waveforms are accurate at the leading `adiabatic' order, and they approximately capture transient self-force resonances that significantly impact the gravitational-wave phase. 13. Worldtube excision method for intermediate-mass-ratio inspirals: scalar-field toy model

Abstract

The computational cost of inspiral and merger simulations for black-hole binaries increases in inverse proportion to the square of the mass ratio $q:=m_2/m_1\leq 1$. One factor of $q$ comes from the number of orbital cycles, which is proportional to $1/q$, and another is associated with the required number of time steps per orbit, constrained (via the Courant-Friedrich-Lewy condition) by the need to resolve the two disparate length scales. This problematic scaling makes simulations progressively less tractable at smaller $q$. Here we propose and explore a method for alleviating the scale disparity in simulations with mass ratios in the intermediate astrophysical range ($10^{-4} \lesssim q\lesssim 10^{-2}$), where purely perturbative methods may not be adequate. A region of radius much larger than $m_2$ around the smaller object is excised from the numerical domain, and replaced with an analytical model approximating a tidally deformed black hole. The analytical model involves certain a priori unknown parameters, associated with unknown bits of physics together with gauge-adjustment terms; these are dynamically determined by matching to the numerical solution outside the excision region. In this paper we develop the basic idea and apply it to a toy model of a scalar charge in a circular geodesic orbit around a Schwarzschild black hole, solving for the massless Klein-Gordon field in a 1+1D framework. Our main goal here is to explore the utility and properties of different matching strategies, and to this end we develop two independent implementations, a finite-difference one and a spectral one. 14. Black hole perturbation theory and gravitational self-force

Abstract

Much of the success of gravitational-wave astronomy rests on perturbation theory. Historically, perturbative analysis of gravitational-wave sources has largely focused on post-Newtonian theory. However, strong-field perturbation theory is essential in many cases such as the quasinormal ringdown following the merger of a binary system, tidally perturbed compact objects, and extreme-mass-ratio inspirals. In this review, motivated primarily by small-mass-ratio binaries but not limited to them, we provide an overview of essential methods in (i) black hole perturbation theory, (ii) orbital mechanics in Kerr spacetime, and (iii) gravitational self-force theory. Our treatment of black hole perturbation theory covers most common methods, including the Teukolsky and Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli equations, methods of metric reconstruction, and Lorenz-gauge formulations, presenting them in a new consistent and self-contained form. Our treatment of orbital mechanics covers quasi-Keplerian and action-angle descriptions of bound geodesics and accelerated orbits, osculating geodesics, near-identity averaging transformations, multiscale expansions, and orbital resonances. Our summary of self-force theory's foundations is brief, covering the main ideas and results of matched asymptotic expansions, local expansion methods, puncture schemes, and point particle descriptions. We conclude by combining the above methods in a multiscale expansion of the perturbative Einstein equations, leading to adiabatic and post-adiabatic evolution schemes. Our presentation is intended primarily as a reference for practitioners but includes a variety of new results. In particular, we present the first complete post-adiabatic waveform-generation framework for generic (nonresonant) orbits in Kerr., Comment: 121 pages, 1 figure. 15. Two-timescale evolution of extreme-mass-ratio inspirals: waveform generation scheme for quasicircular orbits in Schwarzschild spacetime

Abstract

Extreme-mass-ratio inspirals, in which a stellar-mass compact object spirals into a supermassive black hole in a galactic core, are expected to be key sources for LISA. Modelling these systems with sufficient accuracy for LISA science requires going to second (or {\em post-adiabatic}) order in gravitational self-force theory. Here we present a practical two-timescale framework for achieving this and generating post-adiabatic waveforms. The framework comprises a set of frequency-domain field equations that apply on the fast, orbital timescale, together with a set of ordinary differential equations that determine the evolution on the slow, inspiral timescale. Our analysis is restricted to the special case of quasicircular orbits around a Schwarzschild black hole, but its general structure carries over to the realistic case of generic (inclined and eccentric) orbits in Kerr spacetime. In our restricted context, we also develop a tool that will be useful in all cases: a formulation of the frequency-domain field equations using hyperboloidal slicing, which significantly improves the behavior of the sources near the boundaries. Abstract

[Abridged] This review surveys the theory of gravitational self-force in curved spacetime and its application to the gravitational two-body problem in the extreme-mass-ratio regime. We first lay the relevant formal foundation, describing the rigorous derivation of the equation of self-forced motion using matched asymptotic expansions and other ideas. We then review the progress that has been achieved in numerically calculating the self-force and its physical effects in the astrophysical scenario of a compact object inspiralling into a (rotating) massive black hole. We highlight the way in which, nowadays, self-force calculations make a fruitful contact with other approaches to the two-body problem and help inform an accurate universal model of binary black hole inspirals, valid across all mass ratios. We conclude with a summary of the state of the art, open problems and prospects. Our review is aimed at non-specialist readers and is for the most part self-contained and non-technical; only elementary-level acquaintance with General Relativity is assumed. 18. Completion of metric reconstruction for a particle orbiting a Kerr black hole

Abstract

Vacuum perturbations of the Kerr metric can be reconstructed from the corresponding perturbation in either of the two Weyl scalars $\psi_0$ or $\psi_4$, using a procedure described by Chrzanowski and others in the 1970s. More recent work, motivated within the context of self-force physics, extends the procedure to metric perturbations sourced by a particle in a bound geodesic orbit. However, the existing procedure leaves undetermined a certain stationary, axially-symmetric piece of the metric perturbation. In the vacuum region away from the particle, this "completion" piece corresponds simply to mass and angular-momentum perturbations of the Kerr background, with amplitudes that are, however, a priori unknown. Here we present and implement a rigorous method for finding the completion piece. The key idea is to impose continuity, off the particle, of certain gauge-invariant fields constructed from the full (completed) perturbation, in order to determine the unknown amplitude parameters of the completion piece. We implement this method in full for bound (eccentric) geodesic orbits in the equatorial plane of the Kerr black hole. 19. Second-order perturbation theory: problems on large scales

Abstract

In general-relativistic perturbation theory, a point mass accelerates away from geodesic motion due to its gravitational self-force. Because the self-force is small, one can often approximate the motion as geodesic. However, it is well known that self-force effects accumulate over time, making the geodesic approximation fail on long timescales. It is less well known that this failure at large times translates to a failure at large distances as well. At second perturbative order, two large-distance pathologies arise: spurious secular growth and infrared-divergent retarded integrals. Both stand in the way of practical computations of second-order self-force effects. Utilizing a simple flat-space scalar toy model, I develop methods to overcome these obstacles. The secular growth is tamed with a multiscale expansion that captures the system's slow evolution. The divergent integrals are eliminated by matching to the correct retarded solution at large distances. I also show how to extract conservative self-force effects by taking local-in-time "snapshots" of the global solution. 21. A practical, covariant puncture for second-order self-force calculations

Abstract

Accurately modeling an extreme-mass-ratio inspiral requires knowledge of the second-order gravitational self-force on the inspiraling small object. Recently, numerical puncture schemes have been formulated to calculate this force, and their essential analytical ingredients have been derived from first principles. However, the \emph{puncture}, a local representation of the small object's self-field, in each of these schemes has been presented only in a local coordinate system centered on the small object, while a numerical implementation will require the puncture in coordinates covering the entire numerical domain. In this paper we provide an explicit covariant self-field as a local expansion in terms of Synge's world function. The self-field is written in the Lorenz gauge, in an arbitrary vacuum background, and in forms suitable for both self-consistent and Gralla-Wald-type representations of the object's trajectory. 22. A conservative effect of the second-order gravitational self-force on quasicircular orbits in Schwarzschild spacetime

A compact object moving on a quasicircular orbit about a Schwarzschild black hole gradually spirals inward due to the dissipative action of its gravitational self-force. But in addition to driving the inspiral, the self-force has a conservative piece. Within a second-order self-force formalism, I derive a second-order generalization of Detweiler's redshift variable, which provides a gauge-invariant measure of conservative effects on quasicircular orbits. I sketch a frequency-domain numerical scheme for calculating this quantity. 23. Gravitational self-force from radiation-gauge metric perturbations

Abstract

Calculations of the gravitational self-force (GSF) in curved spacetime require as input the metric perturbation in a sufficiently regular gauge. A basic challenge in the program to compute the GSF for orbits around a Kerr black hole is that the standard procedure for reconstructing the perturbation is formulated in a class of radiation gauges, in which the particle singularity is non-isotropic and extends away from the particle's location. Here we present two practical schemes for calculating the GSF using a radiation-gauge reconstructed metric as input. The schemes are based on a detailed analysis of the local structure of the particle singularity in the radiation gauges. We identify 3 types of radiation gauges: two containing a radial string-like singularity emanating from the particle, either in one direction ("half-string" gauges) or both directions ("full-string" gauges); and a third type containing no strings but with a jump discontinuity across a surface intersecting the particle. Based on a flat-space example, we argue that the standard mode-by-mode reconstruction procedure yields the "regular half" of a half-string solution, or (equivalently) either of the regular halves of a no-string solution. For the half-string case, we formulate the GSF in a locally deformed radiation gauge that removes the string singularity near the particle. We derive a mode-sum formula for the GSF in this gauge, analogous to the standard Lorenz-gauge formula but with modified regularization parameters. For the no-string case, we formulate the GSF directly, without a local deformation, and we derive a mode-sum formula that requires no correction to the parameters but involves a certain averaging procedure. We explain the consistency of our results with Gralla's invariance theorem, and discuss the correspondence between our method and a related approach by Friedman et al., Comment: 46 pages, 1 figure, 1 table. 24. Second-order gravitational self-force in a highly regular gauge

Abstract

Gravitational-wave emission from extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) is expected to be a key source for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), a future space-based gravitational-wave detector. In this thesis, we detail an approach to model these systems through a perturbative method known as gravitational self-force theory. Accurate EMRI science requires us to go to second order in perturbation theory, which introduces a number of obstacles. One major problem that we focus on ameliorating in this thesis is the strong divergence encountered on the worldline of the small object. This divergence creates a severe computational cost in numerical simulations and hinders the rapid calculations that are required for waveform generation for LISA. However, building on previous work by Pound [Phys. Rev. D 95, 104056 (2017)], we develop a class of "highly regular" gauges with a weaker singularity structure. We calculate all orders of the metric perturbations required for numerical implementation and generate fully covariant and generic coordinate-expansion expressions for the metric perturbations in this class of gauges. Not only will the weaker divergences enable quicker numerical calculations, they also allow us to rigorously derive a pointlike second-order stress-energy tensor for the small object. We demonstrate that the form of this second-order stress-energy tensor is valid in any smoothly related gauge and, using a specific distributional definition, also valid in a widely used gauge in self-force calculations, the Lorenz gauge. This stress-energy tensor can then be used as part of the source when solving for the full, physical fields at second order and we outline how this can be done through the introduction of a counter term that cancels the most singular part of the second-order source in the Lorenz gauge. Finally, we present the calculation of the gauge vector required to transform from the Lorenz gauge to the highly regular gauge and provide it in mode-decomposed form for the case of quasicircular orbits in Schwarzschild spacetime. While this work is motivated by EMRIs, much of the work in this thesis is valid for a small object in any vacuum background spacetime with an external lengthscale much larger than the size of the small object.

25. Modelling black hole binaries in the intermediate-mass-ratio regime

Abstract

This work presents a new method for creating gravitational waveform templates for black hole binaries with an intermediate mass-ratio. Intermediate-mass-ratio inspirals (IMRIs) are currently an open problem in gravitational-wave source modelling. While black hole perturbation theory can accurately model extreme-mass-ratio inspirals, and numerical relativity has seen much success modelling comparable-mass inspirals, neither approach currently works well on its own for IMRIs. It is not clear how adequate a purely perturbative treatment can be at intermediate mass-ratios of 1:100-1:1000, and at such mass ratios the length-scale disparity remains large enough to pose a serious challenge for numerical relativity. Here we work to provide accurate modelling of such binaries through a synergistic combination of black-hole perturbation and numerical relativity techniques. Our approach matches an approximate analytical solution near the smaller black hole (formed from the tidally perturbed black hole metric) to a fully nonlinear numerical solution in the bulk of the spacetime. This has the effect of relieving some of the scale disparity. This thesis presents the details of this worldtube excision model and goes on to develop and test the architecture using a simple toy model of a scalar charge in orbit around a Schwarzschild black hole. We then present results from numerical implementations of such a test setup in 1+1D, as well as in 3+1D. Finally, we detail the model's infrastructure in the full binary black hole case. The theoretical foundations of the model are erected, which includes the derivation of a suitable approximate analytical solution.

26. Second-order gravitational self-force in Kerr spacetime

Abstract

Gravitational-wave astronomy has been a burgeoning field of research since the first detection of a merging black hole binary in 2015. As gravitational-wave detector sensitivity improves, our models must keep pace. The planned space-based detector LISA will be sensitive to new gravitational wave sources, such as extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs). Precise extraction of EMRI parameters from LISA data will require highly accurate waveform templates. These templates need models which include, among other things, the dissipative piece of the second-order self-force in Kerr. This thesis formulates methods to help calculate the second-order self-force in Kerr. In the first part of the thesis, I develop a general framework for second-order calculations by deriving a new form of the second-order Teukolsky equation. I show that the source of this equation is well defined (in a highly regular gauge) for second-order self-force calculations. Additionally, I present methods for calculating second-order gauge-invariants. I produce an algebraic method for calculating a gauge-invariant. I also provide a formalism for calculating a gauge-invariant associated with the Bondi--Sachs gauge (with a fixed BMS frame). The asymptotically flat property of the Bondi--Sachs gauge is shown to circumvent infrared divergences that arise in generic second-order calculations. Next, I calculate a general formula for the second-order source, decomposed into spherical harmonics, in Schwarzschild. Using this formula, I help to implement a framework for quasi-circular inspirals in Schwarzschild. I transform the source to a near-Bondi--Sachs gauge, increasing the asymptotic falloff by two orders in r. My collaborator Ben Leather integrates the resulting source. From the resulting quantity, we will extract fluxes and evolve inspirals to first post-adiabatic accuracy. In the final part, I take a step toward implementation in Kerr by developing a new method of constructing a more regular first-order perturbation. To help formulate this method, I implement Green--Hollands--Zimmerman metric construction for a stationary point-mass in flat spacetime.

Abstract

This project makes progress towards a first calculation of the second-order gravitational self-force in extreme-mass-ratio binaries. This is an important component in the modeling of these key astrophysical sources of gravitational waves. Computing the secondorder self-force requires the second-order metric perturbation, which can be calculated by solving the Einstein field equations through second order in the mass ratio. Here we have developed, for the first time, a practical scheme for solving the second-order equations. The main ingredient is a certain “puncture” field, which describes the local metric perturbation near the small member of the binary, and for which we obtain a useful covariant-form expression. We apply this method to the case of a quasicircular binary of nonrotating black holes. As a first test we numerically solve the first-order field equations and compute the first-order self-force, finding good agreement with previous results obtained using a different method. The calculation of the second-order metric perturbation brings about two additional technical difficulties: the need for a certain regularization at infinity and on the event horizon of the large black hole, and the strong divergence of the second-order source of the field equations near the small object. We show how these issues can be resolved, first in a simple scalar-field toy model, and then in the second-order gravitational problem. We finally apply our method in full in order to numerically solve the second-order perturbation equations in the quasicircular case, focusing on the monopole piece of the perturbation as a first example.
