This paper investigates the dynamics of a deep neural network (DNN) learning interactions. Previous studies have discovered and mathematically proven that given each input sample, a well-trained DNN usually only encodes a small number of interactions (non-linear relationships) between input variables in the sample. A series of theorems have been derived to prove that we can consider the DNN's inference equivalent to using these interactions as primitive patterns for inference. In this paper, we discover the DNN learns interactions in two phases. The first phase mainly penalizes interactions of medium and high orders, and the second phase mainly learns interactions of gradually increasing orders. We can consider the two-phase phenomenon as the starting point of a DNN learning over-fitted features. Such a phenomenon has been widely shared by DNNs with various architectures trained for different tasks. Therefore, the discovery of the two-phase dynamics provides a detailed mechanism for how a DNN gradually learns different inference patterns (interactions). In particular, we have also verified the claim that high-order interactions have weaker generalization power than low-order interactions. Thus, the discovered two-phase dynamics also explains how the generalization power of a DNN changes during the training process.

We propose a method to reconstruct the phase dynamics in rhythmical interacting systems from macroscopic responses to weak inputs by developing linear and nonlinear response theories, which predict the responses in a given system. By solving an inverse problem, the method infers an unknown system: the natural frequency distribution, the coupling function, and the time delay which is inevitable in real systems. In contrast to previous methods, our method requires neither strong invasiveness nor microscopic observations. We demonstrate that the method reconstructs two phase systems from observed responses accurately. The qualitative methodological advantages demonstrated by our quantitative numerical examinations suggest its broad applicability in various fields, including brain systems, which are often observed through macroscopic signals such as electroencephalograms and functional magnetic response imaging.

In this article, we explore the connection between the heating phase of periodically driven CFTs and the Modular Hamiltonian of a subregion in the vacuum state. We show that the heating phase Hamiltonian corresponds to the Modular Hamiltonian, with the fixed points mapping to the endpoints of the subregion. In the bulk dual, we find that these fixed points correspond to the Ryu-Takayanagi surface of the AdS-Rindler wedge. Consequently, the entanglement entropy associated to the boundary interval within two fixed points exactly matches with the Rindler entropy of AdS-Rindler. We observe the emergent Virasoro algebra in the boundary quantization of the Modular Hamiltonian has a striking similarity with the emergent near Horizon Virasoro algebra. This is a consequence of the fact that while obtaining the boundary Virasoro algebra, a cut-off with conformal boundary condition around the fixed point is introduced, which in the bulk is related to a stretched horizon, with an emergent two-dimensional conformal symmetry. Oscillatory dynamics pervades the universe, appearing in systems of all scales. Whilst autonomous oscillatory dynamics has been extensively studied and is well understood, the very important problem of non-autonomous oscillatory dynamics is less well understood. Here, we provide a framework for non-autonomous oscillatory dynamics, within which we can define intermittent phenomena such as intermittent phase synchronisation. Moreover, we demonstrate this framework with a coupled pair of non-autonomous phase oscillators as well as a higher-dimensional system comprising of two interacting phase-oscillator networks.

Methanol is one of the most abundant interstellar Complex Organic Molecules (iCOMs) and it represents a major building block for the synthesis of increasingly complex oxygen-containing molecules. The reaction between protonated methanol and its neutral counterpart, giving protonated dimethyl ether, (CH$_3$)$_2$OH$^+$, along with the ejection of a water molecule, has been proposed as a key reaction in the synthesis of dimethyl ether in space. Here, gas phase vibrational spectra of the (CH$_3$)$_2$OH$^+$ reaction product and of the [C$_2$H$_9$O$_2$]$^+$ intermediate complex(es), formed under different pressure and temperature conditions, are presented. The widely tunable free electron laser for infrared experiments, FELIX, was employed to record their vibrational fingerprint spectra using different types of infrared action spectroscopy in the $600-1700$ cm$^{-1}$ frequency range, complemented with measurements using an OPO/OPA system to cover the O-H stretching region $3400-3700$ cm$^{-1}$. Many learning algorithms used as normative models in neuroscience or as candidate approaches for learning on neuromorphic chips learn by contrasting one set of network states with another. These Contrastive Learning (CL) algorithms are traditionally implemented with rigid, temporally non-local, and periodic learning dynamics that could limit the range of physical systems capable of harnessing CL. In this study, we build on recent work exploring how CL might be implemented by biological or neurmorphic systems and show that this form of learning can be made temporally local, and can still function even if many of the dynamical requirements of standard training procedures are relaxed. The CALPHAD system of fundamental phase-level databases, now known as the Materials Genome, has enabled a mature technology of computational materials design and qualification that has already met the acceleration goals of the national Materials Genome Initiative. As first commercialized by QuesTek Innovations, the methodology combines efficient genomic-level parametric design of new material composition and process specifications with multidisciplinary simulation-based forecasting of manufacturing variation, integrating efficient uncertainty management. Recent projects demonstrated under the multi-institutional CHiMaD Design Center notably include novel alloys designed specifically for the new technology of additive manufacturing. With the proven success of the CALPHAD-based Materials Genome technology, current university research emphasizes new methodologies for affordable accelerated expansion of more accurate CALPHAD databases. Rapid adoption of these new capabilities by US apex corporations has compressed the materials design and development cycle to under 2 years, enabling a new "materials concurrency" integrated into a new level of concurrent engineering supporting an unprecedented level of manufacturing innovation.

DNA supercoils are generated in genome regulation processes such as transcription and replication and provide mechanical feedback to such processes. Under tension, a DNA supercoil can present a coexistence state of plectonemic and stretched phases. Experiments have revealed the dynamic behaviors of plectonemes, e.g., diffusion, nucleation, and hopping. To represent these dynamics with conformational changes, we demonstrated first the fast dynamics on the DNA to reach torque equilibrium within the plectonemic and stretched phases, and then identified the two-phase boundaries as collective slow variables to describe the essential dynamics. According to the timescale separation demonstrated here, we developed a two-phase model on the dynamics of DNA supercoiling, which can capture physiologically relevant events across timescales of several orders of magnitudes. In this model, we systematically characterized the slow dynamics between the two phases and compared the numerical results with those from the DNA polymer physics-based worm-like chain model. The supercoiling dynamics, including the nucleation, diffusion, and hopping of plectonemes, have been well represented and reproduced, using the two-phase dynamic model, at trivial computational costs. Our current developments, therefore, can be implemented to explore multiscale physical mechanisms of the DNA supercoiling-dependent physiological processes.

In this study we present an investigation on the impact of sparger configuration and fluid properties on the local gas phase dynamics for up to 17% total gas holdup. Experiments in a bubble column with 100 mm inner diameter were conducted with deionized water and NaOH solution of up to cNaOH = 32 mmol·l−1. Ultrafast X-ray computed tomography (UFXCT) was applied to obtain local hydrodynamic parameters, such as gas holdup distribution, bubble sizes and average bubble rise velocities. Radial gas holdup profiles show wall peaking, which is attributed to the uniform bubbly flow regime generated by the needle sparger used in this study. The addition of NaOH leads to similar gas holdup values but significant changes on local bubbly dynamics, such as bubble size distribution and axial gas phase velocity. The Sauter mean diameter was found to decrease with increasing concentration of NaOH, whereby the decrease is larger at higher gas flow rate.

By characterizing the phase dynamics in coupled oscillators, we gain insights into the fundamental phenomena of complex systems. The collective dynamics in oscillatory systems are often described by order parameters, which are insufficient for identifying more specific behaviors. To improve this situation, we propose a topological approach that constructs the quantitative features describing the phase evolution of oscillators. Here, the phase data are mapped into a high-dimensional space at each time, and the topological features describing the shape of the data are subsequently extracted from the mapped points. These features are extended to time-variant topological features by adding the evolution time as an extra dimension in the topological feature space. The time-variant features provide crucial insights into the evolution of phase dynamics. Combining these features with the kernel method, we characterize the multi-clustered synchronized dynamics during the early evolution stages. Finally, we demonstrate that our method can qualitatively explain chimera states. Cell viability and cytotoxicity assays are highly important for drug screening and cytotoxicity tests of antineoplastic or other therapeutic drugs. Even though biochemical-based tests are very helpful to obtain preliminary preview, their results should be confirmed by methods based on direct cell death assessment. In this study, time-dependent changes in quantitative phase-based parameters during cell death were determined and methodology useable for rapid and label-free assessment of direct cell death was introduced. The goal of our study was distinction between apoptosis and primary lytic cell death based on morphologic features. We have distinguished the lytic and non-lytic type of cell death according to their end-point features (Dance of Death typical for apoptosis versus swelling and membrane rupture typical for all kinds of necrosis common for necroptosis, pyroptosis, ferroptosis and accidental cell death). Our method utilizes Quantitative Phase Imaging (QPI) which enables the time-lapse observation of subtle changes in cell mass distribution. According to our results, morphological and dynamical features extracted from QPI micrographs are suitable for cell death detection (76% accuracy in comparison with manual annotation). Furthermore, based on QPI data alone and machine learning, we were able to classify typical dynamical changes of cell morphology during both caspase 3,7-dependent and -independent cell death subroutines. The main parameters used for label-free detection of these cell death modalities were cell density (pg/pixel) and average intensity change of cell pixels further designated as Cell Dynamic Score (CDS). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study introducing CDS and cell density as a parameter typical for individual cell death subroutines with prediction accuracy 75.4% for caspase 3,7-dependent and -independent cell death.

Increased exposition to blue light may induce many changes in cell behavior and significantly affect the critical characteristics of cells. Here we show that multimodal holographic microscopy (MHM) within advanced image analysis is capable of correctly distinguishing between changes in cell motility, cell dry mass, cell density, and cell death induced by blue light. We focused on the effect of blue light with a wavelength of 485 nm on morphological and dynamical parameters of four cell lines, malignant PC-3, A2780, G361 cell lines, and the benign PNT1A cell line. We used MHM with blue light doses 24 mJ/cm2, 208 mJ/cm2 and two kinds of expositions (500 and 1000 ms) to acquire real-time quantitative phase information about cellular parameters. It has been shown that specific doses of the blue light significantly influence cell motility, cell dry mass and cell density. These changes were often specific for the malignant status of tested cells. Blue light dose 208 mJ/cm2 × 1000 ms affected malignant cell motility but did not change the motility of benign cell line PNT1A. This light dose also significantly decreased proliferation activity in all tested cell lines but was not so deleterious for benign cell line PNT1A as for malignant cells. Light dose 208 mJ/cm2 × 1000 ms oppositely affected cell mass in A2780 and PC-3 cells and induced different types of cell death in A2780 and G361 cell lines. Cells obtained the least damage on lower doses of light with shorter time of exposition.

Body-powered prosthetic hands used by below-elbow amputees function in two phases. There is the opening and closing motion of the hand (Motion Phase) and the phase when the hand is in contact with an object, and the fingers apply a pinching force (Pinching Phase). Each phase requires a different set of dynamics to properly function. In the Motion Phase, a small amount of applied force must result in a large translation of the fingers, in the Pinching Phase a small amount of force must result in a large pinching force and a small translation. The problem is that body-powered prostheses have fast motion given a low force input during the motion phase but cannot achieve a high pinching force with a low force input during the pinching phase. The goal of the project is to design a mechanism that passively switches between the dynamics of the motion phase and pinching phase for body-powered active closing hook prostheses. In the motion phase a small force input must result in a large output translation and in the pinching phase a small force input must result in a larger force output and a small output translation. In the motion phase a minimum cable force of 10 N is required and in the pinching phase a pinching force of 30 N must be achieved with an input force of 40 N or less The prototype consists of a hydraulic telemanipulation system with a master (shoulder), operated by the shoulder harness, and slave (hand), operates the hand prosthesis, cylinder connected to each other via a booster mechanism. The booster is inactive in the motion phase and active in the pinching phase. The results show that in the motion phase an input force of 5 N can perform the full translation of the prosthesis. If the hand is met with resistance the input 5 N input can increase up to 24 N until the pinching phase activates. The translation in the pinching phase is too small to observe any change. By means of an electron hole rate equation model we explain the phase dynamics of a quantum dot semiconductor optical amplifier and the appearance of different decay times observed in pump and probe experiments. The ultrafast hole relaxation leads to a first ultrafast recovery of the gain, followed by electron relaxation and, in the nanosecond timescale, radiative and non-radiative recombinations. The phase dynamics is slower and is affected by thermal redistribution of carriers within the dot. We explain the ultrafast response of quantum dot amplifiers as an effect of hole escape and recombination without the need to assume Auger processes

Fundamental understanding of micro-mechanical behaviors in bitumen, including phase separation, micro-friction, micro-abrasion, etc., can help the pavement engineers better understand the bitumen mechanical performances at macroscale. Recent researches show that the microstructure evolution in bitumen will directly affect its surface structure and micro-mechanical performance. In this study, the bitumen microstructure and micro-mechanical behaviors are studied using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) experiments, Phase Dynamics Theory and Molecular Dynamics (MD) Simulation. The AFM experiment results show that different phase-structure will occur at the surface of the bitumen samples under certain thermodynamic conditions at microscale. The phenomenon can be explained using the phase dynamics theory, where the effects of stability parameter and temperature on bitumen microstructure and micro-mechanical behavior are studied combined with MD Simulation. Simulation results show that the saturates phase, in contrast to the naphthene aromatics phase, plays a major role in bitumen micro-mechanical behavior. A high stress zone occurs at the interface between the saturates phase and the naphthene aromatics phase, which may form discontinuities that further affect the bitumen frictional performance.

The processes governing multilayer nucleation in the chemical vapour deposition (CVD) of graphene are important for obtaining high-quality monolayer sheets, but remain poorly understood. Here we show that higher-order carbon species in the gas-phase play a major role in multilayer nucleation, through the use of in-situ ultraviolet (UV) absorption spectroscopy. These species are the volatilized products of reactions between hydrogen and carbon contaminants that have backstreamed into the reaction chamber from downstream system components. Consequently, we observe a dramatic suppression of multilayer nucleation when backstreaming is suppressed. These results point to an important and previously undescribed mechanism for multilayer nucleation, wherein higher-order gas-phase carbon species play an integral role. Our work highlights the importance of gas-phase dynamics in understanding the overall mechanism of graphene growth.

The roles of wave phase structure and evolution in zonal flow dynamics are investigated. Previous work (Guo, Diamond; 2016) has noted that wave phase curvature is sufficient to produce a gradient in the Reynolds force and thus to drive zonal flow formation — even for turbulence of homogeneous fluctuation intensity. In this study, we investigate the energetics and nonlinear evolution of the process. For energetics, refraction (i.e. changes in phase gradient due to Z.F. shear) allows wave energy — and thus the ZF — to evolve at fixed wave amplitude. Using the phase evolution equation derived for the Hasegawa-Mima model, we prove energy conservation between waves and ZF, for fixed wave potential intensity. By separating the mesoscale phase into mean and fluctuation, we show that phase evolution induces ZF formation due to phase gradient shocks. Then, we investigate how linear and nonlinear feedback of the gradient affect the synchronization of the shock structure. Finally, we consider dynamic amplitude to explore the full predator-prey relationship between ZF (predator) and drift waves (prey).

Collective synchronous motion of the phases is introduced in a model for the stochastic passive advection-diffusion of a scalar with external forcing. The model for the phase coupling dynamics follows the well known Kuramoto model paradigm of limit-cycle oscillators. The natural frequencies in the Kuramoto model are assumed to obey a given scale dependence through a dispersion relation of the drift-wave form -βk1+k2, where β is a constant representing the typical strength of the gradient. The present aim is to study the importance of collective phase dynamics on the characteristic time evolution of the fluctuation energy and the formation of coherent structures. Our results show that the assumption of a fully stochastic phase state of turbulence is more relevant for high values of β, where we find that the energy spectrum follows a k-7/2 scaling. Research toward powerful information processing systems that circumvent the interconnect bottleneck by exploiting the nonlinear evolution of multiple phase dynamics in locally connected arrays is discussed. We focus on a scheme in which logic states are defined by the electrical phase of a dynamic process and information processing is realized through interactions between the elements in the array. Simulation results are given for networks comprised of neuron-like integrate-and-fire elements, which could potentially be implemented by ultra-small tunnel junctions, molecules and other types of nanoscale elements. This approach could lead to powerful information processing systems due to massive parallelism in simple, highly scalable nano-architectures. The rational for this approach, its advantages, simulation results, critical issues, and future research directions are discussed.

Light is the primary signal that calibrates circadian neural circuits and thus coordinates daily physiological and behavioral rhythms with solar entrainment cues. Drosophila and mammalian circadian circuits consist of diverse populations of cellular oscillators that exhibit a wide range of dynamic light responses, periods, phases, and degrees of synchrony. How heterogeneous circadian circuits can generate robust physiological rhythms while remaining flexible enough to respond to synchronizing stimuli has long remained enigmatic. Cryptochrome is a short-wavelength photoreceptor that is endogenously expressed in approximately half of Drosophila circadian neurons. In a previous study, physiological light response was measured using real-time bioluminescence recordings in Drosophila whole-brain explants, which remain intrinsically light-sensitive. Here we apply analysis of real-time bioluminescence experimental data to show detailed dynamic ensemble representations of whole circadian circuit light entrainment at single neuron resolution. Organotypic whole-brain explants were either maintained in constant darkness (DD) for 6 days or exposed to a phase-advancing light pulse on the second day. We find that stronger circadian oscillators support robust overall circuit rhythmicity in DD, whereas weaker oscillators can be pushed toward transient desynchrony and damped amplitude to facilitate a new state of phase-shifted network synchrony. Additionally, we use mathematical modeling to examine how a network composed of distinct oscillator types can give rise to complex dynamic signatures in DD conditions and in response to simulated light pulses. Simulations suggest that complementary coupling mechanisms and a combination of strong and weak oscillators may enable a robust yet flexible circadian network that promotes both synchrony and entrainment. This paper presents a learning-based approach for impromptu trajectory tracking for non-minimum phase systems, i.e., systems with unstable inverse dynamics. Inversion-based feedforward approaches are commonly used for improving tracking performance; however, these approaches are not directly applicable to non-minimum phase systems due to their inherent instability. In order to resolve the instability issue, existing methods have assumed that the system model is known and used pre-actuation or inverse approximation techniques. In this work, we propose an approach for learning a stable, approximate inverse of a non-minimum phase baseline system directly from its input-output data. Through theoretical discussions, simulations, and experiments on two different platforms, we show the stability of our proposed approach and its effectiveness for high-accuracy, impromptu tracking. We present results of an experimental study of the timing and phase dynamics in a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. By measuring the response of two widely spaced comb lines to a sinusoidal modulation of the pump power, we determine quantitatively the response of both the central pulse time and the phase. The topic of the PhD project is a comparative study of phase dynamics and macroscopic quantum phenomena in moderately damped NbN, YBaCuO grain boundary (GB) Josephson junctions (JJs) and hybrid devices. This type of research activity responds to the needs of better identifying phase dynamics in JJs in the moderately damped regime, which is going to be more and more common in hybrid nanostructures. Issues on a more detailed understanding of coherence, dissipation and noise in the various devices have a relevant role in the progress of quantum circuits. In the last few years, studies of phase dynamics and macroscopic quantum phenomena have been extended to junctions composed of materials other than the traditional low critical temperature superconductors (LTS) and to novel types of structures with unconventional barriers composed for instance of graphene sheets or of grain boundaries. Progress in engineering new materials into junctions and in understanding and controlling the physics of interfaces may offer novel solutions for junctions of superior quality and complementary functionalities, and therefore may lead in the long run to improve also specific qubit performances. For LTS JJs, once the barrier thickness and the critical current density (Jc) have been fixed, a reduction in its size unavoidably leads to a lowering of the critical current and determines a quite different phase dynamics re-normalized to the new scaling energy. Lower critical currents Ic result in lower Josephson energies EJ, and higher levels of dissipation are expected. The range of the energy dynamical parameters is significantly enlarged, and it is technologically easier to reproducibly realize nontrivial configurations. These devices are characterized by intermediate levels of dissipation (moderately damped regime) and by phase diffusion phenomena. The low Jc limit seems to be characteristic also of all futuristic nanohybrids devices incorporating nanowires, and the moderately damped regime

Flocks of birds, schools of fish, and jams in traffic surprisingly mirror the collective motion observed in the microscopic wet worlds of living microbes, such as bacteria. While these small organisms were discovered centuries ago, scientists have only recently examined the dynamics and mechanics of suspensions that contain these swimming particles. I conduct experiments with the model organism and active colloid, the bacterium Escherichia coli, and use polymers, particles, and phase-separated mixtures to probe the non-equilibrium dynamics of bacterial suspensions. I begin by examining the hydrodynamic interactions between swimming E. coli and particles. For dilute suspensions of bacteria in Newtonian fluids, I find that larger particles can diffuse faster than smaller particles - a feature absent in passive fluids, which may be important in particle transport in bio- and geo-physical settings populated by microbes. Next, I investigate E. coli dynamics in non-Newtonian polymeric solutions. I find that cells tumble less and move faster in polymeric solutions, enhancing cell translational diffusion. I show that tumbling suppression is due to fluid viscosity while the enhancement in swimming speed is due to fluid elasticity. Visualization of single fluorescently-labeled DNA polymers reveals that the flow generated by individual E. coli is sufficiently strong that polymers can stretch and induce elastic stresses in the fluid. These, in turn, can act on the cell in such a way to enhance its transport. Lastly, I probe the interplay between kinetics, mechanics, and thermodynamic of active fluids by examining the evolution of an active-passive phase interphase. I create this interface by exposing regions of a dense bacterial swarm to UV light, which locally immobilizes the bacteria. Vortices etch the interface, setting interface curvature and speed. The local interface curvature correlates with the interface velocity, suggesting an active analog of the Gibbs-Thomson boundar

While Boolean logic has been the backbone of digital information processing, there are classes of computationally hard problems wherein this conventional paradigm is fundamentally inefficient. Vertex coloring of graphs, belonging to the class of combinatorial optimization represents such a problem; and is well studied for its wide spectrum of applications in data sciences, life sciences, social sciences and engineering and technology. This motivates alternate, and more efficient non-Boolean pathways to their solution. Here, we demonstrate a coupled relaxation oscillator based dynamical system that exploits the insulator-metal transition in vanadium dioxide (VO2), to efficiently solve the vertex coloring of graphs. By harnessing the natural analogue between optimization, pertinent to graph coloring solutions, and energy minimization processes in highly parallel, interconnected dynamical systems, we harness the physical manifestation of the latter process to approximate the optimal coloring of k-partite graphs. We further indicate a fundamental connection between the eigen properties of a linear dynamical system and the spectral algorithms that can solve approximate graph coloring. Our work not only elucidates a physics-based computing approach but also presents tantalizing opportunities for building customized analog co-processors for solving hard problems efficiently.

Until recently, deterministic non-autonomous oscillatory systems with stable amplitudes and time-varying frequencies were not recognised as such and have often been mistreated as stochastic. These systems, named chronotaxic, were introduced in \emph{Phys. Rev. Lett.} \textbf{111}, 024101 (2013). In contrast to conventional limit cycle models of self-sustained oscillators, these systems posses a time-dependent point attractor or steady state. This allows oscillations with time-varying frequencies to resist perturbations, a phenomenon which is ubiquitous in living systems. In this work a detailed theory of chronotaxic systems is presented, specifically in the case of separable amplitude and phase dynamics. The theory is extended by the introduction of chronotaxic amplitude dynamics. The wide applicability of chronotaxic systems to a range of fields from biological and condensed matter systems to robotics and control theory is discussed.

An unusual bifurcation sequence exhibited in a recently proposed nonlinear delay electro-optic phase dynamics setup, is explored both experimentally and analytically. The carrier-envelope phase dynamics of octave-spanning Ti:sapphire lasers are analyzed based on a one-dimensional laser. It is found that self-steepening is the major contributor to the energy dependent carrier-envelope phase and that center-frequency-shifts are negligible.

[EN] The microstructure of rubber-modified polystyrene after thermal ageing at 90 °C and multiple extrusion was analyzed by time-domain nuclear magnetic resonance (TD-NMR) in a non-destructive manner. The transverse magnetization decay behaviour observed in TD-NMR was related to the total rubber fraction and its cross-linking density. The data reveal different mechanisms of long-term rubber degradation in high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) during thermo-oxidation and multiple processing: Multiple processing causes a slight increase in the cross-linking density of the rubber phase, without appreciably altering the total amount of rubber fraction. Thermo-oxidation is accompanied by a significant overall decrease of the rubber fraction, an increase of the cross-linking density, and a pronounced increase of the non-crosslinked fraction (chain ends and fragmented segments). The NMR results correlate well with spectroscopic observations and moderately with macroscopic mechanical properties. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We investigate the competition between intersystem crossing (ISC) and internal conversion (IC) as nonradiative relaxation pathways in cyclic alpha,beta-unsaturated enones following excitation to their lowest lying (1)pi pi* state, by means of time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio computation. Upon excitation, the (1)pi pi* state of 2-cyclopentenone decays to the lowest lying (1)pi pi* state within 120 +/- 20 fs. Within 1.2 +/- 0.2 ps, the molecule subsequently decays to the triplet manifold and the singlet ground state, with quantum yields of 0.35 and 0.65, respectively. The corresponding dynamics in modified derivatives, obtained by selective methylation, show a decrease in both IC and ISC rates, with the quantum yields of ISC varying between 0.35 and 0.08. The rapid rates of ISC are explained by a large spin orbit coupling of 45-60 cm(-1) over an extended region of near degeneracy between the singlet and triplet state. Furthermore, the rate of IC is depressed by the existence of a well-defined minimum on the (1)n pi* potential energy surface. The nonadiabatic pathways evinced by the present results highlight the fact that these molecular systems conceptually represent "intermediate cases" between ultrafast dynamics mediated by vibrational motions at conical intersections versus those by statistical decay mechanisms.

Summary: In this work, a two-dimensional model representing the vortices that animals produce, when they are flying/swimming, was constructed. A D{shaped cylinder and an oscillating airfoil were used to mimic these body{shed and wing{generated vortices, respectively. The parameters chosen are based on the Reynolds numbers similar to that which is observed in nature (104). In order to imitate the motion of ying/swimming, the entire system was suspended into a water channel from frictionless air{bearings. The position of the apparatus in the channel was regulated with a linear, closed loop PI controller. Thrust/drag forces were measured with strain gauges and particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to examine the wake structure that develops. The Strouhal number of the oscillating airfoil was compared to the values observed in nature as the system transitions between the accelerated and steady states... As suggested by previous work, this self-regulation is a result of a limit cycle process that stems from nonlinear periodic oscillations. The limit cycles were used to examine the synchronous conditions due to the coupling of the foil and wake vortices. Noise is a factor that can mask details of the synchronization. In order to control its effect, we study the locking conditions using an analytic technique that only considers the phases.. The results suggest that Strouhal number selection in steady forward natural swimming and flying is the result of a limit cycle process and not actively controlled by an organism. Using a child sample, we examined the effects of the phase of narrow-band electroencephalographic (EEG) activity at stimulus onset on the resultant event-related potentials (ERPs) in an equiprobable auditory Go/NoGo task with a fixed stimulus-onset asynchrony. We used FFT decomposition of the EEG at Cz to assess prestimulus narrow-band EEG activity (in 1. Hz bands from 1 to 13. Hz) for each trial. From the cycle at stimulus onset, trials were sorted into four phases for each of the 13 frequencies. ERPs were derived for each of these from the raw EEG activity at the midline sites. ERP responses were analysed in the context of a simple conceptualisation of orthogonal phase effects (cortical negativity vs. positivity, negative driving vs. positive driving, waxing vs. waning). At a number of frequencies, crossing the traditional frequency bands, the predicted non-random occurrence of phase-defined brain states was confirmed. The preferred states of negativity and negative driving were each associated with more efficient stimulus processing, as reflected in latency and amplitude differences of the N1 and P3 ERP components. The present results confirm the existence of preferred brain states and their impact on the efficiency of brain dynamics involved in perceptual and cognitive processing, and extend their occurrence from adults to children. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

In particular, we show how the number of spikes per train and the proximity of a neighboring equilibrium point can influence the formation of coexisting regimes.

We investigate theoretically and experimentally the detrimental e ect of ber dispersion on the synchroniza- tion of an optoelectronic phase chaos cryptosystem. We evaluate the root-mean square synchronization error and the cancellation spectra between the emitter and the re- ceiver in order to characterize the quality of the optical ber communication link. These two indicators explicitly show in temporal and spectral domain how ber dispersion does negatively a ect the phase chaos cancellation at the re- ceiver stage. We demonstrate that the dispersion manage- ment techniques used in conventional optical ber networks, such as dispersion-compensating modules/ bers or disper- sion shifted bers, are also e cient to strongly reduce the detrimental e ects of ber propagation in phase chaos com- munications. This compatibility therefore opens the way to a successful integration of more than 10-Gb/s phase chaos communications systems in existing networks, even when the ber link spans over more than 100 km.
