1. Sarcasm in Paul's Letters

Abstract: This dissertation investigates the use of sarcasm in the undisputed letters of Paul. A methodologically rigorous treatment of this subject can make an important contribution to Pauline studies, as determining whether a given passage is meant sincerely or sarcastically has a considerable impact on interpretation. Observing Paul’s use of sarcasm can also contribute to the study of Pauline rhetoric, elucidating a facet of Paul’s argumentative strategy and providing a novel angle from which to assess the ways he negotiates his relationships with different early-Christian congregations. To break ground on the study of ancient sarcasm before turning to Paul, Part 1 of this dissertation explores three central questions: What is sarcasm? How is sarcasm expressed? And what does sarcasm do? To answer the first question, we review ancient and modern scholarship on irony and sarcasm to construct a working definition of sarcasm. The following two chapters address the latter two questions by treating the issues of sarcasm recognition in ancient Greek and sarcasm’s rhetorical functions through a series of case studies: the first on the Septuagint with special reference to the book of Job and the prophets, and the second on an eclectic selection of ancient Greek texts with special reference to Lucian of Samosata. Part 2 focuses on the identification and exegesis of sarcasm in Paul. The relationship between Galatians’s opening (1:6), irony, and ways of expressing rebuke in ancient letters will feature in our chapter on Galatians. Diatribe will play a major role in our discussion of Romans. In order to clarify the presence of sarcasm throughout the letter, I will offer a revised conception of authorial voice in dialogical passages, which can nuance previous scholarship on diatribe. First Corinthians provides the opportunity to address the presence of sarcasm in the letter’s “Corinthian slogans.” Work on Second Corinthians will focus on the relationship between sarcasm and asteismos, a self-deprecating form of irony that, in Paul, occurs significantly only in 2 Cor 10–13.

Abstract: Complexes like iron (II)-triazoles exhibit spin crossover behavior at ambient temperature and are often considered for possible application. In previous studies, we implemented complexes of this type into polymer nanofibers and first polymer-based optical waveguide sensor systems. In our current study, we synthesized complexes of this type, implemented them into polymers and obtained composites through drop casting and doctor blading. We present that a certain combination of polymer and complex can lead to composites with high potential for optical devices. For this purpose, we used two different complexes [Fe(atrz)3](2ns)2 and [Fe(atrz)3]Cl1.5(BF4)0.5 with different polymers for each composite. We show through transmission measurements and UV/VIS spectroscopy that the optical properties of these composite materials can reversibly change due to the spin crossover effect.

3. Exploring the psychometric properties of the Grammar Learning Strategy Inventory in the Chinese EFL context

Abstract: Learning a second language is a life-long process requiring acquaintance with a repertoire of language learning strategies (LLS). Despite copious research on LLS and their role in fostering autonomous learning, few studies have examined strategies employed when trying to master specific subsystems of the target language, especially grammar. Meaningful communication in a second language hinges on implicit or highly automatized grammar knowledge, which, given the limitations of classroom-based grammar instruction, must for the most part be developed by learners themselves outside the classroom and this can best be achieved through adept use of grammar learning strategies (GLS). Our knowledge of the GLS, however, is scant, an issue that can be addressed either by designing reliable GLS measurement instruments or revalidating the few existing ones. This study adopts the latter approach by investigating the psychometric properties of Pawlak’s (2018) Grammar Learning Strategy Inventory (GLSI) in the Chinese context. The tool was administered to 923 English majors, and the responses were subjected to exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. We found that all seven strategy categories included in the original instrument showed acceptable composite reliability and discriminant validity. The paper concludes by suggesting further revalidation of the GLSI and proposing avenues of research that employ methodological innovations to shed further light on GLS.

4. Physical mechanisms influencing hypoxia in Bahía Almirante, Panamá, a shallow, tropical estuary

Abstract: Tropical regions are understudied relative to their temperate counterparts, and there is inadequate data to elucidate the dynamics and function of tropical estuarine systems. Reducing the scientific bias in the understanding of estuarine dynamics is important because coastal processes in the tropics can differ from higher latitudes. Dissolved oxygen (DO) is a critically important ecological variable, and the prevalence of hypoxia is expected to increase due to the combined effects of ocean warming and eutrophication; however, there are still fundamental knowledge gaps in the role that low-DO levels and multiple stressors play in ecosystem health, and dead zones in the tropics are likely severely under-reported.This dissertation examines the physical processes that are important in regulating hypoxia and temperature inversions in Bahía Almirante, a multi-inlet tropical estuary on Panamá's Caribbean coast, which has experienced documented hypoxia and warming events resulting in coral bleaching and die offs. We use a 10-year record of observations at seven locations in Bahía Almirante to identify seasonal temperature inversions and hypoxia at depth that often co-occur. DO reductions correspond to periods with high freshwater input, resulting in strong salinity stratification that isolates bottom waters, allowing biological oxygen demand to draw down DO. We conducted a two-year intensive study from September 2019-2021 and find that an alongshore pressure gradient drives net flow through Bahía Almirante, and the depth-mean velocity measured in the channel correlates to an along-coast current on the shelf. Water properties indicate hydrographically distinct sub-basins, with a largely isolated inner bay, even during periods of high net flow conditions. In the inner bay, DO at depth drops to hypoxic levels seasonally. Abstract: The size of the human head is highly heritable, but genetic drivers of its variation within the general population remain unmapped. We perform a genome-wide association study on head size (N = 80,890) and identify 67 genetic loci, of which 50 are novel. Neuroimaging studies show that 17 variants affect specific brain areas, but most have widespread effects. Gene set enrichment is observed for various cancers and the p53, Wnt, and ErbB signaling pathways. Genes harboring lead variants are enriched for macrocephaly syndrome genes (37-fold) and high-fidelity cancer genes (9-fold), which is not seen for human height variants. Head size variants are also near genes preferentially expressed in intermediate progenitor cells, neural cells linked to evolutionary brain expansion. Our results indicate that genes regulating early brain and cranial growth incline to neoplasia later in life, irrespective of height. This warrants investigation of clinical implications of the link between head size and cancer.

7. Pressing of Functionalized Polymer Composite Materials to Improve Mössbauer Measurement Signals

Abstract: Coordination compounds, like iron(II) triazole complexes, exhibit spin crossover (SCO) behavior at around room temperature. Therefore, they are interesting for a variety of possible applications, and it is convenient to integrate them into polymers. Due to a reduction of the iron content and thus also 57Fe content in the sample through integration in polymers, Mössbauer measurements are only possible with greater difficulty or very long measurement times without expensive enrichment of the samples with 57Fe. So, other ways of improving the Mössbauer signal for these composite materials are necessary. Therefore, we pressed these composite materials to improve the Mössbauer spectra. In this study, we synthesized an iron(II) triazole spin crossover complex and an electrospun polymer complex composite nanofiber material including the same complex. For both products, Mössbauer measurements were performed at room temperature before and after using a press to show that the complex composite is not harmed through pressing. We investigate the influence of the pressing impact on the Mössbauer measurements in the context of measurement statistics and the measured signals. We show that pressing is not connected to any changes in the sample regarding the spin and oxidation state. We present that pressing improves the statistics of the Mössbauer measurements significantly. Furthermore, we use SEM measurements and PXRD to investigate whether or not the obtained fiber mats are destroyed in the pressing process.

8. Soluble molecular switches in electrospun nanofibers

Abstract: Compounds that exhibit the spin crossover effect are known to show a change of spin states through external stimuli. This reversible switching of spin states is accompanied by a change of the properties of the compound. Complexes, like iron (II)-triazole complexes, that exhibit this behavior at ambient temperature are often discussed for potential applications. In previous studies we synthesized iron (II)-triazole complexes and implemented them into electrospun nanofibers. We used Mössbauer spectroscopy in first studies to prove a successful implementation with maintaining spin crossover properties. Further studies from us showed that it is possible to use different electrospinning methods to either do a implementation or a deposition of the synthesized solid SCO material into or onto the polymer nanofibers. We now used a solvent in which both, the used iron (II)-triazole complex [Fe(atrz)3](2 ns)2 and three different polymers (Polyacrylonitrile, Polymethylmethacrylate and Polyvinylpyrrolidone), are soluble. This shall lead to a higher homogeneous distribution of the complex along the nanofibers. Mössbauer spectroscopy and other measurements are therefore in use to show a successful implementation without any significant changes to the complex.

Abstract: Context. Gravitational waves from black-hole (BH) merging events have revealed a population of extra-galactic BHs residing in short-period binaries with masses that are higher than expected based on most stellar evolution models-And also higher than known stellar-origin black holes in our Galaxy. It has been proposed that those high-mass BHs are the remnants of massive metal-poor stars. Aims. Gaia astrometry is expected to uncover many Galactic wide-binary systems containing dormant BHs, which may not have been detected before. The study of this population will provide new information on the BH-mass distribution in binaries and shed light on their formation mechanisms and progenitors. Methods. As part of the validation efforts in preparation for the fourth Gaia data release (DR4), we analysed the preliminary astrometric binary solutions, obtained by the Gaia Non-Single Star pipeline, to verify their significance and to minimise false-detection rates in high-mass-function orbital solutions. Results. The astrometric binary solution of one source, Gaia BH3, implies the presence of a 32.70a ±a 0.82aM- BH in a binary system with a period of 11.6 yr. Gaia radial velocities independently validate the astrometric orbit. Broad-band photometric and spectroscopic data show that the visible component is an old, very metal-poor giant of the Galactic halo, at a distance of 590 pc. Conclusions. The BH in the Gaia BH3 system is more massive than any other Galactic stellar-origin BH known thus far. The low metallicity of the star companion supports the scenario that metal-poor massive stars are progenitors of the high-mass BHs detected by gravitational-wave telescopes. The Galactic orbit of the system and its metallicity indicate that it might belong to the Sequoia halo substructure. 10. Language teacher professional curiosity: Understanding the drive for professional development

Abstract: Teacher professional development (PD) has been shown to have numerous benefits, such as greater self-efficacy, higher motivation, and enhanced wellbeing (e.g., Kimura, 2014; Polin, 2023; Wang & Chen, 2022), and teaching additional languages is certainly no exception. However, the extent to which teachers are willing and able to engage in PD throughout their careers depends on many factors, some of which are related to the context in which they work, while others are reflective of their individual attributes such as attitudes, motivations, and personality. This paper focuses on the latter by reporting the findings of a study that examined language teacher professional curiosity (LTPC). The data were collected through semi-structured interviews from 6 Austrian and 6 Polish language teachers at different stages of their careers. Qualitative analysis allowed valuable insights into the nature of LTPC, curiosity-driven behaviors as well as factors influencing these behaviors. It also provided the basis for a tentative cyclic process model of LTPC in which interest and curiosity interact to produce a focus of curiosity, which is impacted by motivation, agency, autonomy, and social context, generating a drive for teacher behaviors in respect to their PD.

11. The impact of lean manufacturing on the number of failures in a metal industry production plant – case study

Abstract: The article presents the results of an analysis of the impact of selected Lean Manufacturing tools on the number of failures occurring on the example of a production plant from the metal industry, specializing in the production of welded pipes. Reducing the failure rate of individual devices on the production line is one of the key factors determining the efficiency of the production process and the quality of the manufactured product. In order to reduce unplanned machine downtime caused by failures, various techniques are introduced to reduce them, for example TPM (Total Productive Maintanance). The purpose of this article is to conduct a statistical analysis to assess the impact of TPM implementation on the number of reported failures on one of the production lines.

Abstract: This first VELOCE data release comprises 18,225 high-precision RV measurements of 258 bona fide classical Cepheids on both hemispheres collected mainly between 2010 and 2022, alongside 1161 additional observations of 164 other stars. The median per-observation RV uncertainty is 0.037 km/s, and some reach 0.002 km/s. Non-variable standard stars characterize RV zero-point stability and provide a base for future cross-calibrations. We determined zero-point differences between VELOCE and 31 literature data sets using template fitting and measured linear period changes of 146 Cepheids. Seventy six spectroscopic binary Cepheids and 14 candidates are identified using VELOCE data alone and are investigated in detail in a companion paper (VELOCE II). Several new insights into Cepheid pulsations were obtained, including: a) the most detailed description of the Hertzsprung progression by RVs; b) the identification of double-peaked bumps in the RV curve; c) clear evidence that virtually all Cepheids feature spectroscopic variability signals that lead to modulated RV variability. We identified 36 such stars, of which 4 also exhibit orbital motion. Linear radius variations depend strongly on pulsation period and a steep increase in slope of the $\Delta$R/p versus logP-relation is found near 10d, challenging the existence of a tight relation between Baade-Wesselink projection factors and pulsation periods. We investigated the accuracy of RV time series measurements, v$_\gamma$, and RV amplitudes published in Gaia's DR3 and determined an average offset of 0.65 \pm 0.11 km/s relative to VELOCE. We recommend adopting a single set of template correlation parameters for distinct classes of large-amplitude variable stars to avoid systematic offsets in v$_\gamma$ among stars belonging to the same class. Abstract: Gravitational waves from black-hole merging events have revealed a population of extra-galactic BHs residing in short-period binaries with masses that are higher than expected based on most stellar evolution models - and also higher than known stellar-origin black holes in our Galaxy. It has been proposed that those high-mass BHs are the remnants of massive metal-poor stars. Gaia astrometry is expected to uncover many Galactic wide-binary systems containing dormant BHs, which may not have been detected before. The study of this population will provide new information on the BH-mass distribution in binaries and shed light on their formation mechanisms and progenitors. As part of the validation efforts in preparation for the fourth Gaia data release (DR4), we analysed the preliminary astrometric binary solutions, obtained by the Gaia Non-Single Star pipeline, to verify their significance and to minimise false-detection rates in high-mass-function orbital solutions. The astrometric binary solution of one source, Gaia BH3, implies the presence of a 32.70 \pm 0.82 M\odot BH in a binary system with a period of 11.6 yr. Gaia radial velocities independently validate the astrometric orbit. Broad-band photometric and spectroscopic data show that the visible component is an old, very metal-poor giant of the Galactic halo, at a distance of 590 pc. The BH in the Gaia BH3 system is more massive than any other Galactic stellar-origin BH known thus far. The low metallicity of the star companion supports the scenario that metal-poor massive stars are progenitors of the high-mass BHs detected by gravitational-wave telescopes. The Galactic orbit of the system and its metallicity indicate that it might belong to the Sequoia halo substructure. Alternatively, and more plausibly, it could belong to the ED-2 stream, which likely originated from a globular cluster that had been disrupted by the Milky Way., Comment: 23 pages, accepted fro publication in A&A Letters

Abstract: The Wide-field Spectroscopic Telescope (WST) is proposed as a new facility dedicated to the efficient delivery of spectroscopic surveys. This white paper summarises the initial concept as well as the corresponding science cases. WST will feature simultaneous operation of a large field-of-view (3 sq. degree), a high multiplex (20,000) multi-object spectrograph (MOS) and a giant 3x3 sq. arcmin integral field spectrograph (IFS). In scientific capability these requirements place WST far ahead of existing and planned facilities. Given the current investment in deep imaging surveys and noting the diagnostic power of spectroscopy, WST will fill a crucial gap in astronomical capability and work synergistically with future ground and space-based facilities. This white paper shows that WST can address outstanding scientific questions in the areas of cosmology; galaxy assembly, evolution, and enrichment, including our own Milky Way; origin of stars and planets; time domain and multi-messenger astrophysics. WST's uniquely rich dataset will deliver unforeseen discoveries in many of these areas. 15. Microwave transitions in atomic sodium: Radiometry and polarimetry using the sodium layer

Abstract: We calculate, via variational techniques, single- and two-photon Rydberg microwave transitions, as well as scalar and tensor polarizabilities of sodium atom using the parametric one-electron valence potential, including the spin-orbit coupling. The trial function is expanded in a basis set of optimized Slater-type orbitals, resulting in highly accurate and converged eigen-energies up to $n=60$. We focus our studies on the microwave band 90-150 GHz, due to its relevance to laser excitation in the Earth's upper-atmospheric sodium layer for wavelength-dependent radiometry and polarimetry, as precise microwave polarimetry in this band is an important source of systematic uncertainty in searches for signatures of primordial gravitational waves within the anisotropic polarization pattern of photons from the cosmic microwave background. We present the most efficient transition coefficients in this range, as well as the scalar and tensor polarizabilities compared with available experimental and theoretical data.

Abstract: Following a recent surge of interest in the role of personality traits in second language learning, this study focuses on L2 grit as an important individual difference factor that is gaining growing recognition among second language acquisition researchers. Adopting a mixed-methods approach, we examined the predictive effects of general grit and L2 grit on motivated behavior among 549 advanced Polish university students majoring in English and the extent to which these effects were mediated by self-perceived proficiency. Data were collected by means of the Grit Scale (Duckworth et al., 2007), the L2 Grit Scale (Teimouri et al., 2022), the motivated behavior scale (Taguchi et al., 2009), and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative analysis demonstrated that general grit and L2 grit significantly co-predicted motivated behavior, with the effect of L2 grit being more pronounced. However, differences were found for students representing different proficiency levels. Abstract: Recent observations of tree regeneration failures following large and severe disturbances, particularly under warm and dry conditions, have raised concerns about the resilience of forest ecosystems and their recovery dynamics in the face of climate change. We investigated the recovery of temperate forests in Europe after large and severe disturbance events (i.e., resulting in more than 70% canopy loss in patches larger than 1 ha), with a range of one to five decades since the disturbance occurred. The study included 143 sites of different forest types and management practices that had experienced 28 disturbance events, including windthrow (132 sites), fire (six sites), and bark beetle outbreaks (five sites). We focused on assessing post-disturbance tree density, structure, and composition as key indicators of forest resilience. We compared post-disturbance height-weighted densities with site-specific pre-disturbance densities to qualitatively assess the potential for structural and compositional recovery, overall and for dominant tree species, respectively. Additionally, we analyzed the ecological drivers of post-windthrow tree density, such as forest management, topography, and post-disturbance aridity, using a series of generalized additive models. The descriptive results show that European temperate forests have been resilient to past large and severe disturbances and concurrent climate conditions, albeit with lower resilience to high-severity fire compared with other disturbance agents. Across sites and disturbance agents, the potential for structural recovery was greater than that of compositional recovery, with a large proportion of plots becoming dominated by early-successional species after disturbance. The models showed that increasing elevation and salvage logging negatively affect post-windthrow regeneration, particularly for late-successional species, while pioneer species are negatively affected by increasing summer aridity. Abstract: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a heritable mental illness with complex etiology. While the largest published genome-wide association study identified 64 BD risk loci, the causal SNPs and genes within these loci remain unknown. We applied a suite of statistical and functional fine-mapping methods to these loci, and prioritized 22 likely causal SNPs for BD. We mapped these SNPs to genes, and investigated their likely functional consequences by integrating variant annotations, brain cell-type epigenomic annotations, brain quantitative trait loci, and results from rare variant exome sequencing in BD. Convergent lines of evidence supported the roles of SCN2A, TRANK1, DCLK3, INSYN2B, SYNE1, THSD7A, CACNA1B, TUBBP5, PLCB3, PRDX5, KCNK4, AP001453.3, TRPT1, FKBP2, DNAJC4, RASGRP1, FURIN, FES, YWHAE, DPH1, GSDMB, MED24, THRA, EEF1A2, and KCNQ2 in BD. These represent promising candidates for functional experiments to understand biological mechanisms and therapeutic potential. Additionally, we demonstrated that fine-mapping effect sizes can improve performance and transferability of BD polygenic risk scores across ancestrally diverse populations, and present a high-throughput fine-mapping pipeline (https://github.com/mkoromina/SAFFARI).

Abstract: This paper introduces a groundbreaking digital neuromorphic architecture that innovatively integrates Brain Code Unit (BCU) and Fundamental Code Unit (FCU) using mixedsignal design methodologies. Leveraging open-source datasets and the latest advances in materials science, our research focuses on enhancing the computational efficiency, accuracy, and adaptability of neuromorphic systems. The core of our approach lies in harmonizing the precision and scalability of digital systems with the robustness and energy efficiency of analog processing. Through experimentation, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our system across various metrics. The BCU achieved an accuracy of 88.0% and a power efficiency of 20.0 GOP/s/W, while the FCU recorded an accuracy of 86.5% and a power efficiency of 18.5 GOP/s/W. Our mixed-signal design approach significantly improved latency and throughput, achieving a latency as low as 0.75 ms and throughput up to 213 TOP/s. These results firmly establish the potential of our architecture in neuromorphic computing, providing a solid foundation for future developments in this domain. Abstract: Parametric sound field synthesis methods, such as the Spatial Decomposition Method (SDM) and Higher-Order Spatial Impulse Response Rendering (HO-SIRR), are widely used for the analysis and auralization of sound fields. This paper studies the performances of various sound field synthesis methods in the context of the auralization of a critical listening room. The influence on the perceived spatial and timbral fidelity of the following factors is considered: the rendering framework, direction of arrival (DOA) estimation method, microphone array structure, and use of a dedicated center reference microphone with SDM. Listening tests compare the synthesized sound fields to a reference binaural rendering condition. Several acoustic parameters are measured to gain insights into objective differences between methods. A high-quality pressure microphone improves the SDM framework's timbral fidelity. Additionally, SDM and HO-SIRR show similarities in spatial fidelity. Performance variation between SDM configurations is influenced by the DOA estimation method and microphone array construction. Abstract: Academic global surgery is a rapidly growing field that aims to improve access to safe surgical care worldwide. However, no universally accepted competencies exist to inform this developing field. A consensus-based approach, with input from a diverse group of experts, is needed to identify essential competencies that will lead to standardization in this field. A task force was set up using snowball sampling to recruit a broad group of content and context experts in global surgical and perioperative care. A draft set of competencies was revised through the modified Delphi process with two rounds of anonymous input. A threshold of 80% consensus was used to determine whether a competency or sub-competency learning objective was relevant to the skillset needed within academic global surgery and perioperative care. A diverse task force recruited experts from 22 countries to participate in both rounds of the Delphi process. Of the n = 59 respondents completing both rounds of iterative polling, 63% were from low- or middle-income countries. After two rounds of anonymous feedback, participants reached consensus on nine core competencies and 31 sub-competency objectives. The greatest consensus pertained to competency in ethics and professionalism in global surgery (100%) with emphasis on justice, equity, and decolonization across multiple competencies. This Delphi process, with input from experts worldwide, identified nine competencies which can be used to develop standardized academic global surgery and perioperative care curricula worldwide. Further work needs to be done to validate these competencies and establish assessments to ensure that they are taught effectively.

Abstract: BACKGROUND Among patients with resectable early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), a perioperative approach that includes both neoadjuvant and adjuvant immune checkpoint inhibition may provide benefit beyond either approach alone. METHODS We conducted a randomized, double-blind, phase 3 trial to evaluate perioperative pembrolizumab in patients with early-stage NSCLC. Participants with resectable stage II, IIIA, or IIIB (N2 stage) NSCLC were assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive neoadjuvant pembrolizumab (200 mg) or placebo once every 3 weeks, each of which was given with cisplatin-based chemotherapy for 4 cycles, followed by surgery and adjuvant pembrolizumab (200 mg) or placebo once every 3 weeks for up to 13 cycles. The dual primary end points were event-free survival (the time from randomization to the first occurrence of local progression that precluded the planned surgery, unresectable tumor, progression or recurrence, or death) and overall survival. Secondary end points included major pathological response, pathological complete response, and safety. RESULTS A total of 397 participants were assigned to the pembrolizumab group, and 400 to the placebo group. At the prespecified first interim analysis, the median follow-up was 25.2 months. Event-free survival at 24 months was 62.4% in the pembrolizumab group and 40.6% in the placebo group (hazard ratio for progression, recurrence, or death, 0.58; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.46 to 0.72; P<0.001). The estimated 24-month overall survival was 80.9% in the pembrolizumab group and 77.6% in the placebo group (P = 0.02, which did not meet the significance criterion). A major pathological response occurred in 30.2% of the participants in the pembrolizumab group and in 11.0% of those in the placebo group (difference, 19.2 percentage points; 95% CI, 13.9 to 24.7; P<0.0001; threshold, P = 0.0001), and a pathological complete response occurred in 18.1% and 4.0%, respectively (difference, 14.2 percentage points

Abstract: In the long-lasting Icelandic manuscript culture, the production and reception of sagas was situated in a narrative tradition characterised by the absence of notions of an author genius and a high degree of mouvance and variance: from the 13th to the 19th century Icelandic saga literature was transmitted anony-mously and in handwritten form in ever new retextualisations, accompanied by reiterating changes of medium (oral / written) and genre (prose / verse). It is therefore less the absence than the more or less sudden appearance of attributions of authorship for these kinds of texts in the course of the 18th century that is remarkable in the Icelandic case. In a first generation of Icelandic literary histories and philological treatises in this period, not only new saga narratives, but also new versions of medieval texts were ascribed to individual authors.

Abstract: The Torah is traditionally ascribed to Moses as its author, but it is in fact an anonymous work of scribes who produced it as a written text between the 9th and the 4th centuries BCE. Its oral traditions even reach back into the 2nd millennium BCE. The complex result of this long composition history is an often con-tradictory, yet readable text, as its long reception history, foremost in Judaism and Christianity, demon-strates. If read closely, the Torah reveals an interesting set of checks and balances between its theo-logical positions. It seems that its authors were not concerned primarily with narrative consistence in the first place, but with creating a literary universe that includes a variety of theological perspectives.

26. Modelling the interactions between information and communication technologies and travel behaviour

Abstract: The growing capabilities and widespread proliferation of information and communication technologies (ICT) into virtually every aspect of lifestyle, combined with the continuing challenges faced by transport systems, has ensured ongoing interest in the interactions between ICT and travel behaviour. Yet, despite more than three decades of efforts to understand these relationships, few point of consensus have so far emerged, partly due to the rapidly evolving character of ICT, and partly due to the inherent complexity of such interactions. This thesis seeks to develop novel understandings of such interactions by introducing a number of extensions to the existing modelling frameworks. This is achieved through three interrelated research objectives which seek to explore the topic from macro, micro, and temporal perspectives. The macro perspective takes the form of a structural equation analysis of the relationships between ICT use and travel behaviour across four countries: Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Norway, with the data for the latter three obtained by pooling separate datasets on ICT use and travel behaviour. The micro perspective seeks to develop a microeconomic model of an individual maximising utility through joint choice of activities, including in-travel activities, ICT use, as well as the choice of travel mode, timing and route, with the decisions motivated by contribution towards satisfaction, productivity, and consumption. The model is subsequently tested in the empirical contexts of rail business travel time, business travel time valuation, and conceptualisation of the ICT and travel behaviour interaction scenarios reported elsewhere in the literature. The final, temporal perspective analyses the comparatively least explored topic of evolution in the relationships between ICT use and travel behaviour over time. This is achieved by analysing repeated cross-sectional data using structural equation modelling, and interpreted with reference to the theory of diffusion of innovations. The thesis also discusses a number of potential research, policy and industrial applications of its empirical and theoretical contributions.

Abstract: This article focusses on the object, material and metaphor of glass and glassmaking in the second part of the Roman de la Rose by Jean de Meun. It argues that in the later Middle Ages the emerging material of glass becomes a means to reflect on epistemic, aesthetic and imaginative processes and their impact on artistic practices. Material knowledge, craftmanship and artistic skills intertwine with discursive knowledge (sciences, rhetoric, philosophy, theology, literature) and reflect a fundamental turn in un-derstanding and shaping the social and epistemic relevance of art (ars).

Abstract: Feedstock properties play a crucial role in thermal conversion processes, where understanding the influence of these properties on treatment performance is essential for optimizing both feedstock selection and the overall process. In this study, a series of van Krevelen diagrams were generated to illustrate the impact of H/C and O/C ratios of feedstock on the products obtained from six commonly used thermal conversion techniques: torrefaction, hydrothermal carbonization, hydrothermal liquefaction, hydrothermal gasification, pyrolysis, and gasification. Machine learning methods were employed, utilizing data, methods, and results from corresponding studies in this field. Furthermore, the reliability of the constructed van Krevelen diagrams was analyzed to assess their dependability. Abstract: Structurally defined graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have emerged as promising candidates for nanoelectronic devices. Low band gap (<1 eV) GNRs are particularly important when considering the Schottky barrier in device performance. Here, we demonstrate the first solution synthesis of 8-AGNRs through a carefully designed arylated polynaphthalene precursor. The efficiency of the oxidative cyclodehydrogenation of the tailor-made polymer precursor into 8-AGNRs was validated by FT-IR, Raman, and UV/Vis-near-infrared (NIR) absorption spectroscopy, and further supported by the synthesis of naphtho[1,2,3,4-ghi]perylene derivatives (1 and 2) as subunits of 8-AGNR, with a width of 0.86 nm as suggested by the X-ray single crystal analysis. Low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and solid-state NMR analyses provided further structural support for 8-AGNR. The resulting 8-AGNR exhibited a remarkable NIR absorption extending up to ∼2400 nm, corresponding to an optical band gap as low as ∼0.52 eV. Moreover, optical-pump TeraHertz-probe spectroscopy revealed charge-carrier mobility in the dc limit of ∼270 cm2 V−1 s−1 for the 8-AGNR.

Abstract: The miniaturized Mössbauer-spectrometer (MIMOS II), originally devised by Göstar Klingelhöfer, is further developed by the Renz group at the Leibniz University Hanover in cooperation with the Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts. A new processing unit with a two-dimensional (2D) data acquisition was developed by M. Jahns. The advantage of this data acquisition is that no thresholds need to be set before the measurement. The energy of each photon is determined and stored with the velocity of the drive. After the measurement, the relevant area can be selected for the Mössbauer spectrum. Now we have expanded the evaluation unit with a power supply for a MIMOS drive and a MIMOS PIN detector. So we have a very compact MIMOS transmissions measurement setup. With this setup it is possible to process the signals of two detectors serially. Currently we are working on a parallel signal processing.

The last guidelines on groin hernia management were published in 2018 by the HerniaSurge Group. The aim of this project was to assess new evidence and update the guidelines. The guideline is intended for general and abdominal wall surgeons treating adult patients with groin hernias. Method A working group of 30 international groin hernia experts and all involved stakeholders was formed and examined all new literature on groin hernia management, available until April 2022. Articles were screened for eligibility and assessed according to GRADE methodologies. New evidence was included, and chapters were rewritten. Statements and recommendations were updated or newly formulated as necessary. Results Ten chapters of the original HerniaSurge inguinal hernia guidelines were updated. In total, 39 new statements and 32 recommendations were formulated (16 strong recommendations). A modified Delphi method was used to reach consensus on all statements and recommendations among the groin hernia experts and at the European Hernia Society meeting in Manchester on October 21, 2022. Conclusion The HerniaSurge Collaboration has updated the international guidelines for groin hernia management. Abstract: Skull bone mineral density (SK-BMD) provides a suitable trait for the discovery of key genes in bone biology, particularly to intramembranous ossification, not captured at other skeletal sites. We perform a genome-wide association meta-analysis (n ~ 43,800) of SK-BMD, identifying 59 loci, collectively explaining 12.5% of the trait variance. Association signals cluster within gene-sets involved in skeletal development and osteoporosis. Among the four novel loci (ZIC1, PRKAR1A, AZIN1/ATP6V1C1, GLRX3), there are factors implicated in intramembranous ossification and as we show, inherent to craniosynostosis processes. Functional follow-up in zebrafish confirms the importance of ZIC1 on cranial suture patterning. Likewise, we observe abnormal cranial bone initiation that culminates in ectopic sutures and reduced BMD in mosaic atp6v1c1 knockouts. Mosaic prkar1a knockouts present asymmetric bone growth and, conversely, elevated BMD. 36. Customizable tubular model for n-furcating blood vessels and its application to 3D reconstruction of the cerebrovascular system

Abstract: Understanding the 3D cerebral vascular network is one of the pressing issues impacting the diagnostics of various systemic disorders and is helpful in clinical therapeutic strategies. Unfortunately, the existing software in the radiological workstation does not meet the expectations of radiologists who require a computerized system for detailed, quantitative analysis of the human cerebrovascular system in 3D and a standardized geometric description of its components. In this study, we show a method that uses 3D image data from magnetic resonance imaging with contrast to create a geometrical reconstruction of the vessels and a parametric description of the reconstructed segments of the vessels. First, the method isolates the vascular system using controlled morphological growing and performs skeleton extraction and optimization. Then, around the optimized skeleton branches, it creates tubular objects optimized for quality and accuracy of matching with the originally isolated vascular data. Finally, it optimizes the joints on n-furcating vessel segments. As a result, the algorithm gives a complete description of shape, position in space, position relative to other segments, and other anatomical structures of each cerebrovascular system segment. Our method is highly customizable and in principle allows reconstructing vascular structures from any 2D or 3D data. The algorithm solves shortcomings of currently available methods including failures to reconstruct the vessel mesh in the proximity of junctions and is free of mesh collisions in high curvature vessels. It also introduces a number of optimizations in the vessel skeletonization leading to a more smooth and more accurate model of the vessel network. We have tested the method on 20 datasets from the public magnetic resonance angiography image database and show that the method allows for repeatable and robust segmentation of the vessel network and allows to compute vascular lateralization indices. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) is an uncommon pathology of the pancreas with unpredictable malignant potential. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) assessment plays a vital role in lesion characterization and confirmation of the tissue diagnosis. However, there is a paucity of data regarding the imaging assessment of these lesions. AIM: To determine the characteristic EUS features of SPN and define its role in preoperative assessment. METHODS: This was an international, multicenter, retrospective, observational study of prospective cohorts from 7 large hepatopancreaticobiliary centers. All cases with postoperative histology of SPN were included in the study. Data collected included clinical, biochemical, histological and EUS characteristics. RESULTS: One hundred and six patients with the diagnosis of SPN were included. The mean age was 26 years (range 9 to 70 years), with female predominance (89.6%). The most frequent clinical presentation was abdominal pain (80/106; 75.5%). The mean diameter of the lesion was 53.7 mm (range 15 to 130 mm), with the slight predominant location in the head of the pancreas (44/106; 41.5%). The majority of lesions presented with solid imaging features (59/106; 55.7%) although 33.0% (35/106) had mixed solid/cystic characteristics and 11.3% (12/106) had cystic morphology. Calcification was observed in only 4 (3.8%) cases. Main pancreatic duct dilation was uncommon, evident in only 2 cases (1.9%), whilst common bile duct dilation was observed in 5 (11.3%) cases. One patient demonstrated a double duct sign at presentation. Elastography and Doppler evaluation demonstrated inconsistent appearances with no emergence of a predictable pattern. EUS guided biopsy was performed using three different types of needles: Fine needle aspiration (67/106; 63.2%), fine needle biopsy (37/106; 34.9%), and Sonar Trucut (2/106; 1.9%). Abstract: This chapter moves the notion of failure in the context of real-world experimentation so that accidental and strategic ignorance can be understood as elements and conditions of knowledge production in general. This renders mistakes and failures as eminent in processes of knowledge generation and learning. Thus understood, the notion of experimenting with the unpredictable can be connected to concepts of risk and uncertainty in order to treat experimental cultures as proceduralization of mindful mistakes so that learning from failure can be better understood as a legitimate strategy. To illustrate this point, the COVID-19 pandemic will be conceptualized as a large-scale or global experiment in learning from failure.

Abstract: Introduction: Chronic pain is one of the most frequent clinical problems after inguinal hernia surgery. Despite more than two decades of research and numerous publications, no evidence exists to allow for chronic postoperative inguinal pain (CPIP) specific treatment algorithms. Methods: This narrative review presents the current knowledge of the non-surgical management of CPIP and makes suggestions for daily practice. Results: There is a paucity for high-level evidence of non-surgical options for CPIP. Different treatment options and algorithms have been published for chronic pain patients in the last decades. Discussion and conclusion: It is suggested that non-surgical treatment is introduced in the management of all CPIP patients. The overall approach to interventions should be pragmatic, tiered and multi-interventional, starting with least invasive and only moving to more invasive procedures upon lack of effect. Evaluation should be multidisciplinary and should take place in specialized centres. We strongly suggest to follow general guidelines for treatment of persistent pain and to build a database allowing for establishing CPIP specific evidence for optimal analgesic treatments.

Abstract: In a dynamic system, time-dependent links between affective factors can provide more information than the level of response within a single isolated system. In the present study, influenced by the positive psychology movement and the complex dynamic systems theory in the domain of second language acquisition, first, we dealt with change in terms of short-term dynamics and long-term trajectories of foreign language enjoyment (FLE), foreign language boredom (FLB), and foreign language playfulness (FLP) in a sample of 636 learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) using univariant latent change score (LCS) models. Then, we explored the developmental processes involved in how changes in FLE and FLP were associated with changes in FLB. In particular, we tested mediation models to see whether the growth of FLP acts as a mediator between FLE and FLB changes in a multivariant LCS mediation (LCSM) model. The findings showed that (a) in a multivariant LCS model, FLE and FLP increases independently predicted decreases in FLB over time and (b) the growth of FLP acted as a mediator between variation in FLE and FLB. Participants showed interindividual and intraindividual divergences in their L2 emotions, not just on the first time of measurement, but also in short-term dynamics and long-term trajectories. The findings facilitate understanding of the complicated mechanism of variation in L2 emotions, thus potentially contributing to enhancement of pedagogical practices and learning outcomes.

Abstract: The article the requirements of the Factory Production Control (FPC) dedicated to construction products (including metal, i.e. ribbed bars, steel pipes, shapes, sheets and metal constructions) introduced to the single market of the European Union, was presented. Meeting the requirements of legal regulations with regard to these products is an important issue for metallurgical companies placing their products on the EU market. These enterprises are required to effectively implement and supervise the FPC system, supervised by a party independent of the manufacturer (third party). The aim of the article is to present the requirements of the FPC and refer them to the requirements of industry standards for metal products – shapes.

43. Stability of the rolling process of ribbed bars based on the analysis of strength parameters

Abstract: The article presents the results of the strength properties of 12 ÷ 24 mm ribbed bars used for concrete reinforcement. The strength properties and the ribbing geometry of the ribbed bars is a key factor in ensuring the safety of building structures. Therefore, the continuous analysis of the mechanical parameters of ribbed bars and the reasons for their change is essential for any rolling mill. This article aims to present an analysis of the strength properties of ribbed bars made of high ductility steel in 2021 in a selected production plant, and then, based on the obtained results, to perform an analysis aimed at verifying the stability of the rolling process.

Abstract: Washing synthetic textile fibers releases micro/nano plastics, endangering the environment. As new filters and associated regulations are developed to prevent fiber release from washing machines, there emerges a need to manage the collected waste, for which the only current options are combustion or landfill. Herein we show for the first time the application of a catalytic pyrolysis approach to upcycle textile derived fibrous micro/nano plastics waste, with the aim of keeping carbon in the solid phase and preventing its release as a greenhouse gas. Herein, we demonstrate the co-production of hydrogen and carbon nanomaterials from the two most prevalent global textile microfiber wastes: cotton and polyester. Our results pave a way forward to a realistic process design for upcycling mixed micro/nano fiber waste collected from laundering, drying, vacuuming, and environmental cleanup.

Abstract: Fish stomach content is a compelling data source, as stomachs can provide information about diet of predators, distribution of prey fish, predator-prey preference or changes in diet over time. For instance, stomach samples have historically been used to inform the natural mortality of stock assessments in the Baltic and North Seas. Since stomach samples tend to vary substantially over time, due to differences in biomass of predator and prey, time series must be constructed to provide critical information on food web interactions in time and space. In this project, we aimed (1) to analyse new stomach samples, from the North and Baltic Seas; (2) to continue historical time series; (3) to update and create an online ICES database for the broader community to explore new and old data in conjunction; and (4) to perform preliminary analysis on the newly added data. In total, 10 087 new stomachs will be provided from the two case study areas. We analysed and uploaded 5 512 new stomach samples so far. Additionally, 27 744 historical Baltic cod stomach data have been uploaded. The analysis provided here show that the predation on saduria and sprat by cod in the Baltic Sea has changed over the last 30 years. In the North Sea, the new samples consisted primarily of unidentified matter, benthic food and crustaceans, whereas the historical samples contain a larger number of commercial fish.

47. Investigating the Long Secondary Period Phenomenon with the ASAS-SN and Gaia data

Abstract: The aim of this work is to create a complete list of sources exhibiting a long secondary period (LSP) in the ASAS-SN catalog of variable stars, and analyze the properties of this sample compared to other long period variables without LSP. We use the period-amplitude diagram to identify the 55572 stars showing an LSP, corresponding to 27% of the pulsating red giants in the catalog. We use the astrometric data from Gaia DR3 and the spectroscopic data provided by the APOGEE, GALAH, and RAVE surveys to investigate the statistical properties of the sample. We find that stars displaying an LSP have a spatial distribution that is more dispersed than the non-LSP giants, suggesting that they belong to an older population. Spectroscopically-derived ages seem to confirm this. The stars with an LSP also appear to be different in terms of C/O ratio from their non-LSP counterparts., Comment: Submitted to A&A

Abstract: IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is a progressive form of kidney disease defined by glomerular deposition of IgA. Here we performed a genome-wide association study of 10,146 kidney-biopsy-diagnosed IgAN cases and 28,751 controls across 17 international cohorts. We defined 30 genome-wide significant risk loci explaining 11% of disease risk. A total of 16 loci were new, including TNFSF4/TNFSF18, REL, CD28, PF4V1, LY86, LYN, ANXA3, TNFSF8/TNFSF15, REEP3, ZMIZ1, OVOL1/RELA, ETS1, IGH, IRF8, TNFRSF13B and FCAR. The risk loci were enriched in gene orthologs causing abnormal IgA levels when genetically manipulated in mice. We also observed a positive genetic correlation between IgAN and serum IgA levels. High polygenic score for IgAN was associated with earlier onset of kidney failure. In a comprehensive functional annotation analysis of candidate causal genes, we observed convergence of biological candidates on a common set of inflammatory signaling pathways and cytokine ligand–receptor pairs, prioritizing potential new drug targets.

50. Bucks for Buckets (B4B): Active Defenses Against Stealing Encoders

Abstract: Machine Learning as a Service (MLaaS) APIs provide ready-to-use and high-utility encoders that generate vector representations for given inputs. Since these encoders are very costly to train, they become lucrative targets for model stealing attacks during which an adversary leverages query access to the API to replicate the encoder locally at a fraction of the original training costs. We propose Bucks for Buckets (B4B), the first active defense that prevents stealing while the attack is happening without degrading representation quality for legitimate API users. Our defense relies on the observation that the representations returned to adversaries who try to steal the encoder's functionality cover a significantly larger fraction of the embedding space than representations of legitimate users who utilize the encoder to solve a particular downstream task.vB4B leverages this to adaptively adjust the utility of the returned representations according to a user's coverage of the embedding space. To prevent adaptive adversaries from eluding our defense by simply creating multiple user accounts (sybils), B4B also individually transforms each user's representations. This prevents the adversary from directly aggregating representations over multiple accounts to create their stolen encoder copy.
