We investigate and compare the spatial (lateral) resolution, or more generally, the optical/instrumental transfer function (OTF/ITF) of surface slope measuring profilometers of two different types that are commonly used for high accuracy characterization of x-ray optics at the long-spatial-wavelength range. These are an autocollimator based profiler, Optical Surface Measuring System (OSMS), and a long trace profiler, LTP-II, both available at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) XË-Ray Optics Lab (XROL). In the OSMS, an ELCOMAT-3000 electronic auto-collimator, vertically mounted to the translation carriage and equipped with an aperture of 2.5 mm diameter, is scanned along the surface under test. The LTPË-II OTF has been measured for two different configurations, a classical two-beam pencil-beam-interferometry and a single-Gaussian-beam deflectometry. For the ITF calibration, we apply a recently developed method based on test surfaces with one-dimensional (1D) linear chirped height profiles of constant slope amplitude. Analytical expressions for the OTFs, empirically deduced based on the experimental results, are presented. We also discuss the application of the results of the ITF measurements and modeling to improve the surface slope metrology with state-of-The-Art x-ray mirrors. This work was supported by the U. S. Slope measuring deflectometry is commonly used by the X-ray optics community to measure the long-spatial-wavelength surface figure error of optical components dedicated to guide and focus X-rays under grazing incidence condition at synchrotron and free electron laser beamlines. The best performing instruments of this kind are capable of absolute accuracy on the level of 30-50 nrad. However, the exact bandwidth of the measurements, determined at the higher spatial frequencies by the instrument's spatial resolution, or more generally by the instrument's modulation transfer function (MTF) is hard to determine. An MTF calibration method based on application of a test surface with a one-dimensional (1D) chirped height profile of constant amplitude was suggested in the past. In this work, we propose a new approach to designing the test surfaces with a 2D-chirped topography, specially optimized for MTF characterization of slope measuring instruments. The design of the developed MTF test samples based on the proposed linear chirped slope profiles (LCSPs) is free of the major drawback of the 1D chirped height profiles, where in the slope domain, the amplitude strongly increases with the local spatial frequency of the profile. We provide the details of fabrication of the LCSP samples. The results of first application of the developed test samples to measure the spatial resolution of the BESSY-NOM at different experimental arrangements are also presented and discussed.

We present spatially resolved X-ray diffraction pattern of individual GaAs nanorods grown catalyst-free throughout a pre-patterned amorphous SiNx mask onto germanium [111] surfaces. The experiment has been performed using synchrotron radiation using a micro-sized beam prepared by compound refractive lenses. Due to the non-polar character of the substrate the shapes of NR´s appear not uniform and vary between deformed hexagonal and trigonal in symmetry. Because the average diameter of NR´s equals the experimental resolution certain cuts through slightly inclined edges or corners of individual nanorods with lateral size of about 225 nm could be selected using spatially resolved reciprocal space mapping.
