- Abstract
During Mustafa Kemal’s administration over the newly founded Turkish Republic (1923-1938), an ambitious media campaign was launched to present new policies, which would transform Turkish society and culture, as necessary for the modernization and success of the Republic. This project involved the production and distribution of propaganda to the greater Turkish public in the form of newspapers, posters, and cartoons as a method of nation-forming and social engineering. By analyzing a series of images published and distributed during the social and political transformations of the early 20th-century Republic of Turkey, this research will examine the power of propaganda in generating retrospective historical narratives that reorient the past into new terms that would allow the emergence of the modern Turkish state. This thesis will employ a hybrid approach of qualitative content analysis and semiotic discourse analysis to examine a sample of early Turkish propaganda posters and cartoons by identifying recurring symbols, themes, and figures within the illustrations. This research aims to study aspects of Turkish print media and culture under Kemal’s administration as a window into the communication of political messages, social transformation, and nation-forming projects active at that time. By visualizing society during this period in Turkish history through analyzing print culture, this thesis will make a unique contribution to the rich academic dialogue on the transition and transformation of early Turkish society.
