A new enantiomeric sesquiterpene alcohol named (–)-maalian-5-ol was isolated from the liverwort, and the structure and absolute configuration was determined to be the stereostructureI by chemical and spectral evidence.The authors express their gratitude to Dr H. In order to study the mechanism determining the desorption temperature (T d ) of hydrogen storage materials, we have measured positive muon spin rotation and relaxation (μ + SR) in MgH 2 over a wide temperature range including its T d . The pressure in the sample cell due to desorbed H 2 was measured in parallel with the μ + SR measurements under static conditions. Such in situ μ + SR measurements revealed that hydrogen starts to diffuse in MgH 2 well below T d . This indicates the important role of hydrogen diffusion in accelerating the desorption reaction by removing the reaction product, i.e. H 2 , from the reaction system., QC 20190527

The K 2 Cr 8 O 16 compound belongs to a series of quasi-1D compounds with intriguing magnetic properties that are stabilized through a high-pressure synthesis technique. In this study, a muon spin rotation, relaxation and resonance (μ + SR) technique is used to investigate the pressure dependent magnetic properties up to 25 kbar. μ + SR allows for measurements in true zero applied field and hereby access the true intrinsic material properties. As a result, a refined temperature/pressure phase diagram is presented revealing a novel low temperature/high pressure (p C1 = 21 kbar) transition from a ferromagnetic insulating to a high-pressure antiferromagnetic insulator. Finally, the current study also indicates the possible presence of a quantum critical point at p C2 ~ 33 kbar where the magnetic order in K 2 Cr 8 O 16 is expected to be fully suppressed even at T = 0 K., QC 20190401

In this current study we have acquired the very first high-quality, high-resolution ARPES data from this material. Our data clearly reveal two distinct dispersive bands that cross the Fermi level at different k(F). This is a clear signature that the electronic properties of this material is affected by the presence of a mixed valence state on the different vanadium chains and possibly also the low-temperature magnetic spin order. The molecular nature (Ga2)n of gallium makes this an interesting metal to investigate for the development of novel nano-materials. However, establishment of a targeted approach to manipulating the properties of gallium clusters requires a detailed understanding of how doping affects the bonding in these species. In this study, the bonding of gallium nanoclusters has been investigated using electron deformation densities and Regional Density Functional Theory (RDFT). Bonding throughout Ga12X clusters is generally intermediate between covalent and metallic. However, the presence of Ga2 subunits is clearly identified in clusters with endohedral dopants (Ga12X, X = Al, Si, P, Ga, Ge, As). Although there is evidence of Ga2 subunits in exohedral doped clusters, localised bonding to the dopant generally leads to significant disruption to the cluster framework. Maps of electronic chemical potential provide understanding for the observed differences in regioselectivity for hydrogen adsorption.

Background and purpose: The clinical characteristics of colony stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R) related adult‐onset leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids and pigmented glia (ALSP) have been only partially elucidated. Methods: Clinical data from CSF1R mutation carriers who had been seen at our institutions or reported elsewhere were collected and analysed using a specific investigation sheet to standardize the data. Results: In all, 122 cases from 90 families with CSF1R mutations were identified. The mean age of onset was 43 years (range 18–78 years), the mean age at death was 53 years (range 23–84 years) and the mean disease duration was 6.8 years (range 1–29 years). Women had a significantly younger age of onset than men (40 vs. 47 years, P = 0.0006, 95% confidence interval 3.158–11.177). There was an age‐dependent penetrance that was significantly different between the sexes (P = 0.0013). Motor dysfunctions were the most frequent initial symptom in women whose diseases began in their 20s. Thinning of the corpus callosum, abnormal signalling in pyramidal tracts, diffusion‐restricted lesions and calcifications in the white matter were characteristic imaging findings of ALSP. The calcifications were more frequently reported in our case series than in the literature (54% vs. 3%). Seventy‐nine per cent of the mutations were located in the distal part of the tyrosine kinase domain of CSF1R (102 cases). There were no apparent phenotype−genotype correlations. Conclusions: The characteristics of ALSP were clarified. The phenotype of ALSP caused by CSF1R mutations is affected by sex.
