Market Structure and Competition Policy applies modern advances in game theory to the analysis of competition policy and develops some of the theoretical and policy concerns associated with the pioneering work of Louis Phlips. Containing contributions by leading scholars from Europe and North America, this book observes a common theme in the relationship between the regulatory regime and market structure. Since the inception of the new industrial organisation, economists have developed a better understanding of how real-world markets operate. These results have particular relevance to the design and application of anti-trust policy. Analyses indicate that picking the most competitive framework in the short run may be detrimental to competition and welfare in the long run, concentrating the attention of policy makers on the impact on the long-run market structure. This book provides essential reading for graduate students of industrial and managerial economics as well as researchers and policy makers.

The work submitted in this thesis applies fisheries modelling techniques to three of the most important fisheries in Western Australia in order to assess the status of their stocks and to improve our understanding of their response to fishing. A model of the tiger prawn stock in Shark Bay assumed that the varying proportions of prawns that recruited to the overall fishery in the different calendar months remained the same in each year and that the different contributions to recruitment at each of the six fishing grounds in each month also remained the same in each year. Based on field studies, constant proportions of the prawns were assumed to migrate northward each month between adjacent fishing grounds, but with no migration northward from the most northern ground. The parameter estimates from the model indicated that most prawns recruited to the fishery between January and April, with recruitment peaking in March. Recruitment was greatest into the Peron fishing ground and least into the Western Ground. The proportions migrating increased from the southern grounds to the northern grounds. The time series of estimates of annual recruitment indicated that recruitment underwent a marked decline in 1980, which is consistent with the recruitment failure experienced by this stock in the early 1980s. Annual recruitment gradually recovered to reach a peak in 1995, but then declined with the result that, by 1998, it was only 56% of the 1995 level. The temporal and spatial resolution of the model is now at a level that is consistent with the regulations that have been applied by fishery managers to reduce the level of exploitation on tiger prawns and to allow the stock to rebuild. An age-structured model of the pilchard fisheries off the southern coast of Western Australia was fitted separately to each of the three assemblages that comprise the pilchard stock. The patent relates to a valve for controlling air flow having a hub adapted to form a plenum therein for maintaining air fed thereinto. At least one nozzle is mounted within the hub for providing a flow path to conduct air from the plenum. Means are mounted within the hub to establish with the nozzles a condition of relative revolving motion and for establishing a quantity of steady air flow through each nozzle and at least one cyclic flow pattern of air through each nozzle. The means within the hub being axially and azimuthally positionable with respect to the nozzles while the condition of relative revolving motion exists.

The study explores aspects of the change facilitator role of heads of departments in Nebraskan technical community colleges. The theory is presented in terms of the change process, the communication of innovations, and the stages of concern about an innovation. The computer was used as the example of an innovation to be implemented because of its far reaching consequences in the vocationally orientated technical community colleges. Five research questions were asked. (1) What "structures" existed to assist heads of departments to respond to computer technology? (2) What "interventions" did the heads of departments use to ensure that their departments incorporated computer innovations into curriculum, educational practices, and administration? (3) What were the "levels of concern" of heads of departments about computers? (4) What were the differences and similarities between heads of department in two community colleges on the three dimensions given above? (5) What were the differences between heads of major departments on the three dimensions? Two survey instruments were used to obtain data: the Innovations and Community College Questionnaire (ICCQ) and the Change Facilitators Stages of Concern Questionnaire (CFSoCQ) which were satisfactorily returned by 37 (74%) of the population. A case study based on one community college is included. The study revealed that heads of departments saw advisory committees as key "structures" influencing the introduction of innovations. The initiative of individual instructors was most often listed as the most important "intervention" in the introduction of the innovation, although inservice was seen to be very important. An analysis of "stages of concern" revealed that only 23% of heads of departments were likely to be ready to act as change facilitators with this innovation. From 1899 until 1905, he served at a YMCA in Washington, D.C. as a physical director. Rideout died on November 26, 1957.

This is a portrait of Alfred Thompson Halstead (1862-1908), a YMCA secretarial student at the YMCA Training School, now Springfield College, in 1891 and faculty there from 1892-1895. Written on the back the name Alfred T. Halsted does have a question mark next to it., Halstead is credited for popularizing volleyball. Invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan (1870-1942), a physical director at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts, volleyball was originally intended for businessmen who desired an activity less strenuous than basketball. First played by raising a tennis net to a six foot height and using the inside bladder of a basketball as a volleyball, the game combined the rules of tennis, handball, and baseball. The game did not require a fixed number of players and went for nine innings with three "outs" per team. Although Morgan originally called this game “mintonette,” Halstead suggested “volley ball” (then two words) as a more accurate representative of the game during its 1896 premiere at the YMCA Sports Conference hosted by Springfield College.

We show that the static duopoly model in which firms choose between exporting and foreign direct investment is often a prisoners’ dilemma game in which a switch from exporting to foreign direct investment reduces profits. By contrast, we show that when the game is repeated there is a range of parameters for which the firms can partially collude by choosing to export rather than invest. In this range, a reduction in export costs may undermine the partial collusion, causing a switch from export to investment.

Mr. Wardle also served as the General Secretary of the Rochester, NY YMCA in 1880. Mr. Wardle also made generous contributions to the YMCA in 1886 (Year Book of the YMCA, 1886). Mr. Wardle is shown looking at this right side as it was customary in photographs of the time.

This is a portrait of Springfield College alumnus Frank E. Barnes (class of 1893), who was an original member of the very first basketball team., After graduating, Frank E. Barnes worked as a YMCA secretary in Woburn, Massachusetts. Barnes then decided to further his education, and ultimately graduated from Columbia University in 1914. After graduation, he spent some time working as a YMCA secretary at Camp Columbia. James A. Naismith (November 6, 1861 – November 28, 1939), nicknamed "The Father of Basketball," was born in Almonte, Ontario. Both of his parents died of typhoid fever when he was nine. He was raised by his uncle, who later financed Naismith's way through college. He earned his theological degree from McGill University and graduated from Springfield College, then the YMCA Training School, in 1891. After graduation, he was hired as a faculty member, where he taught for five years. It was in his first year as a faculty member at Springfield College that he created the game of Basketball as an activity for an unruly class. In 1895, Naismith enrolled at the Gross Medical School in Denver and received his M.D. in 1898. In that same year, Naismith took the position of department head of physical education at the University of Kansas, where he remained until his death.
