The Governor's Monthly News Conference, an unedited exchange between reporters and Governor Spencer Cox. At his monthly news conference, Gov. Spencer Cox spoke about elections on both the state and national levels. He believes any of the three candidates to replace Utah Rep. John Curtis would be good. He also said if Donald Trump becomes the Republican nominee for president, he does not think he can win. The governor also addressed water, the Inland Port, social media lawsuits, and back to school.

Edward Abbey was an important environmentalist and advocate for the wild places in the state of Utah. He spent several of his formative years working in the national parks of our state and saw firsthand its beauty. In his writing, in books like the Monkey Wrench Gang and Desert Solitaire, he spoke of the need to protect Utah's wildlands and places. His teachings and radical influence have sparked movements that long outlived him and helped protect some of the wild spaces of Utah over the years. In the world of environmental writing and thinking, he is as influential as Henry David Thoreau and John Muir. He passed away in 1989 at the age of 62. His Spirit lives on in all those Utahns who work to protect our natural spaces from economic development and the encroachment of industry.

Producción Científica, The recovery of threatened and endangered fish species is among the highest priorities for biodiversity conservation in national parks and fisheries management in nearby areas. Threats to fish populations are numerous and include habitat fragmentation and degradation, proliferation of invasive and pathogen species, and climate change. Moreover, mountain areas often share the most critical threats. However, there does not exist a common strategy that integrates conservation and management plans for fish populations in mountain areas. In this regard, LIFE DIVAQUA designed a conservation strategy that integrates new knowledge gained from scientific research and long-term monitoring data, and considers the main threats to fish populations in mountain areas: (1) A long term monitoring program has been already implemented for 10 years, revealing temporal trends of fish populations in mountain streams. (2) Modeling of fish population by the use of environmental DNA allowed analyzing fish distributions in areas with scarce data and evaluating habitat suitability maps. (3) Fishways construction and removal of river barriers substantially increased the distribution area of endangered species. (4) The analysis of climate change effects in water temperature and hydrology led to the implementation of environmental flows under a climate change scenario; (5) Monitoring fish diseases, their occurrence, and temporal changes (e.g., Aeromonas spp.) can be used as an early warning signal of ecosystem unbalance. A pilot study for the implementation of this conservation and management plan in the LIFE DIVAQUA project is showing promising results. However, the success of conservation and management strategies requires a broader approach. This includes the participation of a wide range of partners and stakeholders and utilizes independent scientific oversight, assessment, and project adjustments to ensure conservation goals are met., Comisión Europea - (grant LIFE18 NAT/ES/000121)

Protected areas play an important role in biodiversity conservation and tourism. Significant efforts have been made to increase the amount of protected lands. A problem of increasing the amount of public protected areas is that governments and other institutions face difficulties in providing the necessary resources for effective management. Accordingly, managers must be as efficient as possible but the lack of comparative methods makes the evaluation of efficiency difficult. Using Data Envelopment Analysis, a non-stochastic and non-parametric approach, information from 29 protected areas in 5 countries was analyzed to compare management efficiency amongst them. The first result found is the level of management efficiency that each park has in comparison with the others parks. The other important result is a prediction of the changes in the outputs if there is a hypothetical budget change. The creation and subsequent downsizing of Bears Ears National Monument has been one of the most publicized and politicized land management decisions within the state over the past decade. However, relatively little research has been conducted to determine if, and to what extent, the creation of the monument impacted outdoor recreation and recreation-related industries. Now, more than three years after the monument was created, there are sufficient data to take a retrospective look at the influence of the monument. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the influence of Bears Ears National Monument on outdoor recreation and its related industries in San Juan County, Utah.

Indigenous people have lived in the Bears Ears region of Southeastern Utah for millennia. Ancestral Puebloans built elaborate houses, check dams, agricultural terraces, and other modifications of the landscape, leaving ecological legacies that persist to this day. Identifying how humans interacted with past environments is critical for informing how best to protect archaeological sites and ecological diversity in the present. This “archaeo-ecosystem” approach would facilitate co-management of public lands in ways that promote Indigenous health, cultural reclamation and sovereignty. Music: Gently, Onwards by ELPHNT.

Proposed developments at Zion National Park’s east entrance include the construction of a new visitor center, lodging, and hiking/biking trails along with the deployment of an electric shuttle fleet. This study analyzes the economic impacts of east park improvements on Kane and Washington counties over 10 years by comparing this high-investment scenario with a projected baseline scenario.

Zion National Park is located at the convergence of three distinct ecological regions: the Colorado Plateau, the Mojave Desert, and the Great Basin. This unique location, along with Zion’s dramatic landscape and the prevalence of water, creates ideal habitat for a wide variety of plants. In all, Zion is home to over 1,000 species of plants. This list provides a glimpse of the incredible biodiversity that can be found within the park.
