By integrating the insights from social identity research on collective action, this article examines the social-psychological mechanisms behind the emergence of the 2019–20 ‘Chile despertó’ social movement, a major Latin American revolt against the government's price hikes. Using survey data collected among Chilean activists (N = 549) and non-activists (i.e., members of broader society, N = 234), we analyse two major explanatory collective action frameworks: that is, the social identity model of collective action (SIMCA) and the encapsulation model of the social identity of collective action (EMSICA). Multi-group SEM with latent variables revealed that the EMSICA was slightly better suited as compared to SIMCA to explain collective action on behalf of newly formed collective identities. As concerns prosocial disobedience, these attitudes predicted collective action intentions indirectly through social identification among both activists and non-activists. The indirect effects of moral outrage were found to be more pronounced in non-activists, whereas perceived collective efficacy had stronger direct mobilizing effects among activists. The discussion highlights the importance of studying individuals' prosocial disobedience attitudes within social identity models of collective action. I profondi mutamenti ambientali, economici, sociali e culturali oggi in atto richiamano il bisogno di potenziare il sistema della formazione per rendere le tanto auspicate transizioni verde e digitale anche socialmente eque e giuste. Per essere tali, esse dovranno mettersi al servizio delle future generazioni e, al contempo, coinvolgere tutti i giovani quali agenti di rinnovamento nelle fragilità dei sistemi socioeconomici. In questa prospettiva di engagement delle nuove generazioni, le istituzioni educative e formative, in particolar modo le università, hanno la responsabilità di relazionarsi con le questioni e le opportunità della transizione ecologica e digitale, promuovendo lo sviluppo di quelle competenze considerate necessarie per gestire nuove sfide e governare il cambiamento quali GreenComp, DigComp e LifeComp.

Il movimento dei Cemea, giunto in Italia negli anni Cinquanta del Novecento, si propone di diffondere i metodi dell’educazione attiva agendo in modo particolare sulla formazione degli educatori in ambito extrascolastico. Con il presente contributo ci si propone di riflettere sulla peculiare relazione che i Cemea, in linea con la tradizione pedagogica dei quali sono diretti eredi, instaurano con il contesto naturale e antropico nel quale via via operano: un rapporto basato sulla valorizzazione della ricchezza dell’altro – inteso sia come ambiente che ospita, sia come popolazione che accoglie – e caratterizzato da apertura, curiosità e rispettosa interazione. Un esempio di questo approccio emerge anche da una ricerca appena conclusa, riguardante la colonia di vacanza organizzata dai Cemea della delegazione di Milano a Montechiaro (To): a partire dall’analisi di house organ, giornalini di colonia e fonti orali, nell’intervento si cercherà di mettere in evidenza come Montechiaro costituisca un esempio di progettualità e metodologia tese a favorire quella riconnessione di umano e naturale nella quale bambini ed educatori tornino a percepirsi come esseri nella e della natura.

Nell’attuale congiuntura storico-sociale, la riflessione pedagogica è chiamata a supportare i contesti aziendali, sollecitandoli a innovare i loro modelli di business al fine di mantenere in equilibrio competitività economica e sostenibilità dello sviluppo. In modo peculiare, la complessità della tematica climatica spinge le imprese a migliorare la loro capacità di prevenire e gestire i rischi, di mettere a fuoco le ricadute sistemiche e gli effetti combinati sulle attività operative, di progettare soluzioni praticabili in presenza di emergenze, a patto di saper elaborare adeguate strategie in materia di formazione green. In questo quadro contestuale, è suscettibile d’analisi l’inclusione del rischio climatico nelle scelte di pianificazione/programmazione aziendale delle piccole e medie imprese – con particolare riferimento allo sviluppo delle risorse umane – per dotare le persone di competenze e valori etico-morali idonei a una costante riorganizzazione del lavoro nella prospettiva della sostenibilità intesa quale sintesi virtuosa tra tutela ambientale, produttività economica, benessere umano.

Inspired by the popular Arab protests against oppressive regimes that began in 2010, people around the world protested in sympathy with the Arab peoples. The present research draws on two major theories of intergroup relations to develop an initial integrative model of sympathetic collective action. We incorporate social dominance theory’s (SDT) concept of (rejectionist) legitimizing myths with the solidarity and emotional mediation concept of the social identity model of collective action (SIMCA) to understand motivations for sympathetic collective action among bystanders. Using data from 12 nations (N = 1,480), we tested three models: (a) SIMCA (i.e., solidarity, anger, and efficacy), (b) a social dominance theory model of collective action (i.e., social dominance orientation and ideologies concerning Arab competence), and (c) an integrated model of sympathetic collective action combining both theories. Results find the greatest support for an integrated model of collective action. Discussion focuses on theoretical pluralism and suggestions for future research.

Depression and suicidal ideation are tightly linked to the lack of hope in the future. Hopelessness begins with the occurrence of negative life events and develops through the perception that negative outcomes are stable and pervasive. Most of the research has investigated individual factors predicting hopelessness. However, other studies have shown that the social context may also play an important role: disadvantaged contexts exacerbate the feeling that future is unreachable and hopeless. In this study we investigate the role of shared emotions (emotional climates) on the sense of hopelessness during the second half of the life. Emotional climates have been defined as the emotional relationships constructed between members of a society and describe the quality of the environment within a particular community. We present results of multilevel analyses using data from the NCCR-LIVES769 project «Vulnerability and growth», the Swiss Household Panel and official statistics, that explore the relationship between characteristics of the Swiss cantons and hopelessness. Although hopelessness is mainly affected by individual factors as life events and personality, results show that canton socio-economic conditions and climates of optimism or pessimism have an effect on the individual perception of hopelessness. Individuals are more likely to feel hopeless after having experienced critical events (i.e., loss of the partner in the late life) in cantons with high rates of unemployment and with a high share of negative emotions. On the contrary, positive emotional climates play a protective role against hopelessness.

We tested the internal reliability and predictive validity of a new 4-item Short Social Dominance Orientation (SSDO) scale among adults in 20 countries, using 15 languages (N = 2,130). Low scores indicate preferring group inclusion and equality to dominance. As expected, cross-nationally, the lower people were on SSDO, the more they endorsed more women in leadership positions, protecting minorities, and aid to the poor. Multilevel moderation models showed that each effect was stronger in nations where a relevant kind of group power differentiation was more salient. Distributions of SSDO were positively skewed, despite use of an extended response scale; results show rejecting group hierarchy is normative. The short scale is effective. Challenges regarding translations, use of short scales, and intersections between individual and collective levels in social dominance theory are discussed. © The Author(s) 2013.
