1. Non Uniqueness of Power-Law Flows

Abstract: We apply the technique of convex integration to obtain non-uniqueness and existence results for power-law fluids, in dimension d >= 3. For the power index q below the compactness threshold, i.e. q ∈ (1, 2d/d+2), we show ill-posedness of Leray–Hopf solutions. For a wider class of indices q ∈ (1, 3d+2/d+2) we show ill-posedness of distributional (non-Leray–Hopf) solutions, extending the seminal paper of Buckmaster & Vicol [10]. In this wider class we also construct non-unique solutions for every datum in L²

2. Numerical and Experimental Characterization of a Coanda-Type Industrial Air Amplifier

Abstract: The performance of an industrial air amplifier is assessed through experimental and numerical characterization, with a focus on examining the influence of various operating conditions (isolated, “blowing,” and “suction” modes) and direct geometric scaling of the device within the specified range of the injection gap (XXXXX) and the inlet pressure characteristic values. The findings underscore the presence of a linear trend of the entrained mass flow and a nonlinear decay of the amplification factor, both with notable sensitivity to the gap width. Numerical RANS simulations validate the experimental data, characterize the asymmetric flow downstream from the device, and facilitate the exploration of more complex scenarios. In this regard, scaling the device’s dimensions reveals an optimal aspect ratio between the minimum diameter (XXXXX) and XXXX to maximize the entrained mass flow. This research provides valuable insights into the behavior of air amplifiers, offering guidance for their design and application across various industrial contexts.

Abstract: Edible electronics is an emerging research field targeting electronic devices that can be safely ingested and directly digested or metabolized by the human body. As such, it paves the way to a whole new family of applications, ranging from ingestible medical devices and biosensors to smart labelling for food quality monitoring and anti-counterfeiting. Being a newborn research field, many challenges need to be addressed to realize fully edible electronic components. In particular, an extended library of edible electronic materials is required, with suitable electronic properties depending on the target device and compatible with large-area printing processes, to allow scalable and cost-effective manufacturing. In this work, we propose a platform for future low-voltage edible transistors and circuits that comprises an edible chitosan gating medium and inkjet-printed inert gold electrodes, compatible with low thermal budget edible substrates, such as ethylcellulose. We report the compatibility of the platform, characterized by critical channel features as low as 10 mu m, with different inkjet-printed carbon-based semiconductors, including biocompatible polymers present in the picogram range per device. A complementary organic inverter is also demonstrated with the same platform as a proof-of-principle logic gate. The presented results offer a promising approach to future low-voltage edible active circuitry, as well as a testbed for non-toxic printable semiconductors.

4. A n-type, Stable Electrolyte Gated Organic Transistor Based on a Printed Polymer

Abstract: Electrolyte-gated organic transistors (EGOTs) are promising and versatile devices for next-generation biosensors, neuromorphic systems, and low-voltage electronics. They are particularly indicated for applications where stable operation in aqueous environment and cost-effective manufacturing are required. Indeed, EGOTs can be fabricated through low-cost, large area, and scalable techniques, such as printing, from a large portfolio of solution processable organic materials, which are often able to stably operate in water or physiological solutions. Despite a large number of solution processable EGOTs have been reported in the literature so far, only a few are based on printed semiconductors, with no examples of digitally printed, i.e., inkjet printed, n-type devices, which would easily enable complementary architectures. In this work, we propose the first example of a n-type electrolyte gated organic transistor based on an inkjet printed polymer. The proposed device shows a high stability when operated in water and requires only 3 hours of conditioning to produce a stable response, a much faster dynamic than in the case of printed polymers currently tested for p-type EGOTs. As a proof-of-concept, the proposed printed n-type EGOT is successfully integrated with a printed single-walled carbon-nanotubes based p-type device in a logic inverter, demonstrating the possibility to build simple water-gated digital electronic circuits.

In particular, we exploit non linear econometric methods to analyse the information content of the term structure of interest rates. We find that both monetary and financial variables are useful to predict the future evolution of economic activity.

Abstract: Microorganisms (sensu lato, i.e., including micrometazoans) are thought to have cosmopolitan geographic distributions due to their theoretically unlimited dispersal capabilities, a consequence of their tiny size, population dynamics, and resistant forms. However, several molecular studies of microorganisms have identified biogeographic patterns indicating cryptic speciation and/or weak species definitions. Using a multi-locus approach with the genus Milnesium (Tardigrada), we aimed to determine the genetic structure of populations worldwide and the effects of long distance dispersal (LDD) on genetic connectivity and relationships across the six continents. Our results on this micrometazoan’s genetic structure and LDD at global and micro-local scales indicate contrasting patterns not easily explained by a unique or simple phenomenon. Overall, we report three key findings: (i) confirmation of long distance dispersal for tardigrades, (ii) populations with globally-shared or endemic micro-local haplotypes, and (iii) a supported genetic structure instead of the homogeneous genetic distribution hypothesized for microorganisms with LDD capabilities. Moreover, incongruences between our morphological and molecular results suggest that species delimitation within the genus Milnesium could be problematic due to homoplasy. Duality found for Milnesium populations at the global scale, namely, a molecular phylogenetic structure mixed with widely distributed haplotypes (but without any apparent biogeographic structure), is similar to patterns observed for some unicellular, prokaryotic and eukaryotic, microorganisms. Factors influencing these patterns are discussed within an evolutionary framework.

7. CD44-Targeted Carriers: The Role of Molecular Weight of Hyaluronic Acid in the Uptake of Hyaluronic Acid-Based Nanoparticles

Abstract: Nanotechnology offers advanced biomedical tools for diagnosis and drug delivery, stressing the value of investigating the mechanisms by which nanocarriers interact with the biological environment. Herein, the cellular response to CD44-targeted nanoparticles (NPs) was investigated. CD44, the main hyaluronic acid (HA) receptor, is widely exploited as a target for therapeutic purposes. HA NPs were produced by microfluidic platform starting from HA with different molecular weights (Mw, 280, 540, 820 kDa) by polyelectrolyte complexation with chitosan (CS). Thanks to microfluidic technology, HA/CS NPs with the same physical features were produced, and only the effects of HA Mw on CD44-overexpressing cells (human mesenchymal stem cells, hMSCs) were studied. This work provides evidence of the HA/CS NPs biocompatibility regardless the HA Mw and reveals the effect of low Mw HA in improving the cell proliferation. Special attention was paid to the endocytic mechanisms used by HA/CS NPs to enter hMSCs. The results show the notable role of CD44 and the pronounced effect of HA Mw in the NPs' internalization. HA/CS NPs uptake occurs via different endocytic pathways simultaneously, and most notably, NPs with 280 kDa HA were internalized by clathrin-mediated endocytosis. Instead, NPs with 820 kDa HA revealed a greater contribution of caveolae and cytoskeleton components.

Abstract: Marine actors are showing an increased interest in the application of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) for deep sea shipping, because of their high conversion efficiency, low pollutant emissions, and fuel flexibility. However, it is unknown how the operation of SOFC systems is affected by large inclinations and motions, which can be present in ships for instance by seawaves. The goal of this research is to evaluate the influence of static and dynamic inclinations on the operation and safety of SOFC systems. Ship motions are emulated using a one-axial oscillation platform up to 30 degrees of inclination. The SOFC system was successfully operated on the platform and demonstrated stable power production under a variety of test conditions without any noticeable safety hazards. 10. Experimental evaluation of a solid oxide fuel cell system exposed to inclinations and accelerations by ship motions

Abstract: Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) systems have the potential to reduce emissions from seagoing vessels. However, it is unknown whether ship motions influence the system's operation. In this research, a 1.5 kW SOFC module is operated on an inclination platform that emulates ship motions, to evaluate the influence of static and dynamic inclinations on the system's safety, operation, and lifetime. The test campaign consists of a static inclination test, a dynamic test, a degradation test, and a high acceleration test. There were no interruptions in the power supply during the different tests, and no detectable gas leakages or safety hazards. Although the SOFC does not fail in any test condition, dynamic inclinations result in forced oscillations in the fuel regulation, which propagate through the system by different feedback loops in the control architecture, leading to significant deviations in the operational parameters of the system. Additionally, for motion periods from 16 to 26 s, reoccurring exceedance of the fuel utilisation results in a gradual reduction of the power supply. Abstract: A cohort of 47 patients is screened for pancreatic cancer precursors with a portable 96-well bioelectronic sensing-array for single-molecule assay in cysts fluid and blood plasma, deployable at point-of-care (POC). Pancreatic cancer precursors are mucinous cysts diagnosed with a sensitivity of at most 80% by state-of-the-art cytopathological molecular analyses (e.g., KRASmut DNA). Adding the simultaneous assay of proteins related to malignant transformation (e.g., MUC1 and CD55) is deemed essential to enhance diagnostic accuracy. The bioelectronic array proposed here, based on single-molecule-with-a-large-transistor (SiMoT) technology, can assay both nucleic acids and proteins at the single-molecule limit-of-identification (LOI) (1% of false-positives and false-negatives). It comprises an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)-like 8 × 12-array organic-electronics disposable cartridge with an electrolyte-gated organic transistor sensor array, and a reusable reader, integrating a custom Si-IC chip, operating via software installed on a USB-connected smart device. The cartridge is complemented by a 3D-printed sensing gate cover plate. KRASmut, MUC1, and CD55 biomarkers either in plasma or cysts-fluid from 5 to 6 patients at a time, are multiplexed at single-molecule LOI in 1.5 h. The pancreatic cancer precursors are classified via a machine-learning analysis resulting in at least 96% diagnostic-sensitivity and 100% diagnostic-specificity. This preliminary study opens the way to POC liquid-biopsy-based early diagnosis of pancreatic-cancer precursors in plasma.

Abstract: A paternidade é percebida como um momento singular na vida de um homem. Ser pai de um ou mais filhos com a condição autista resulta em experiências particulares e repercussões variadas nas famílias, o que exige a reconfiguração de papeis, modelos e expectativas. A participação efetiva nos cuidados das crianças autistas é desafiadora também para os homens. Assim, o objetivo foi compreender o desempenho da paternidade, a participação nos cuidados dos filhos e a construção da identidade masculina, através das experiências relatadas pelos participantes nas gravações de vídeos publicados no Youtube. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, com objetivo descritivo-exploratório, tendo como procedimento a translação de informação visual já existente. A coleta de dados foi realizada em setembro de 2022, pela seleção de vídeos de acesso livre e gratuito. Foram analisados 23 vídeos, separados em dois grupos, sendo o primeiro composto por 14 relatos espontâneos e o segundo composto por 09 entrevistas. A análise dos dados foi realizada pelo conteúdo temático. Os resultados indicaram que os homens compartilharam suas experiências pessoais para apoiar outras pessoas que vivenciam as mesmas situações e relataram emoções e sentimentos, o processo do diagnóstico até a aceitação, o aprendizado mútuo durante os cuidados de seus filhos e a importância do apoio, incluindo o espiritual. Concluiu-se que os homens associaram a responsabilidade pelos cuidados dos filhos ao exercício da paternidade e à identidade masculina e que as redes sociais podem auxiliar na disseminação das informações, na redução dos preconceitos e no aumento da participação dos pais., Paternity is perceived as a singular moment in a man's life. Being the father of one or more children with autism results in particular experiences and varied repercussions in families, which requires the reconfiguration of roles, models and expectations. Effective participation in the care of autistic children is challenging for men as well. Thus, the objective was to understand the performance of paternity, the participation in the care of children and the construction of male identity, through the experiences reported by participants in video recordings published on Youtube. This is qualitative research, with a descriptive-exploratory objective, having as procedure the translation of already existing visual information. The data collection was carried out in September 2022, by selecting free and open access videos. Twenty-three videos were analyzed, separated into two groups, the first composed of 14 spontaneous reports, and the second composed of 9 interviews. The data analysis was carried out by thematic content. The results indicated that the men shared their personal experiences to support other people experiencing the same situations and reported emotions and feelings, the process from diagnosis to acceptance, the mutual learning during the care of their children and the importance of support, including spiritual support. It was concluded that men associated the responsibility for the care of their children with the exercise of paternity and male identity and that social networks can help in the dissemination of information, in reducing prejudice and increasing the participation of fathers., La paternidad se percibe como un momento singular en la vida de un hombre. Ser padre de uno o más hijos con autismo conlleva experiencias particulares y repercusiones variadas en las familias, lo que requiere la reconfiguración de roles, modelos y expectativas. La participación efectiva en el cuidado de los niños autistas es también un reto para los hombres. Así, el objetivo fue comprender el desempeño de la paternidad, la participación en el cuidado de los hijos y la construcción de la identidad masculina, a través de las experiencias relatadas por los participantes en las grabaciones de vídeo publicadas en Youtube. Se trata de una investigación cualitativa, con objetivo descriptivo-exploratorio, teniendo como procedimiento la traducción de informaciones visuales ya existentes. La recogida de datos se llevó a cabo en septiembre de 2022, mediante la selección de vídeos de acceso libre y gratuito. Abstract: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the agent of a major global outbreak of respiratory tract disease known as Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). SARS-CoV-2 infects mainly lungs and may cause several immune-related complications, such as lymphocytopenia and cytokine storm, which are associated with the severity of the disease and predict mortality. The mechanism by which SARS-CoV-2 infection may result in immune system dysfunction is still not fully understood. Here, we show that SARS-CoV-2 infects human CD4+ T helper cells, but not CD8+ T cells, and is present in blood and bronchoalveolar lavage T helper cells of severe COVID-19 patients. We demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein (S) directly binds to the CD4 molecule, which in turn mediates the entry of SARS-CoV-2 in T helper cells. This leads to impaired CD4 T cell function and may cause cell death. SARS-CoV-2-infected T helper cells express higher levels of IL-10, which is associated with viral persistence and disease severity. Thus, CD4-mediated SARS-CoV-2 infection of T helper cells may contribute to a poor immune response in COVID-19 patients.

14. Study and characterization of polymorphs of BTBT derivatives and their application in organic electronics

Abstract: The perquisites of organic semiconductors (OSCs) in the field of organic electronics have attracted much attention due to the advantages like cost-effectiveness, solution processibility, etc. A key property in OSCs is charge carrier mobility, which depends on molecular packing, as even the slightest changes in the packing of OSC can significantly impact the mobility. Organic molecules are constructed by weak interactions, which makes the OSCs prone to adopt multiple packing arrangements, thus giving rise to polymorphism. Therefore, polymorph screening in bulk and thin films is crucial for material development. This thesis aims to present a systematic study of polymorphism of [1]benzothieno[3,2-b]benzothiophene (BTBT) derivatives functionalized with different side chains. The role of peripheral side chains has been studied since they can promote different packing arrangements. The bulk polymorph screening of OSCs was approached with conventional solution mediated recrystallization experiments like evaporation, slurry maturation, anti-solvent precipitation, etc. Each of the polymorphs were inspected for their relative stability and the kinetics of transformation was evaluated. Polymorphism in thin films was also investigated for selected OSCs. Non-equilibrium methods like, thermal gradient and solution shearing were employed to examine the nucleation, crystal growth and morphology in controlled crystallization conditions. After careful analysis of crystal phases in bulk and thin films, OFETs have been fabricated by optimizing the manufacturing conditions and the hole mobility values were extracted. The charge transport property of the OSCs tested for OFETs was supported by the ionization potential and transfer integrals calculation. An attempt to correlate the solid-state structure to electronic properties was carried out. We found that this molecule self-assembles solely into one type of stable crystal form, regardless of the experimental conditions employed when using conventional and non-conventional methods of crystallization. The integration of blends of C7-BTBT-C7 with polystyrene as active materials in OFETs fabricated using a solution shearing technique led to a field-effect mobility of 1.42 ± 0.45 cm2 V−1 s−1 in the saturation regime when a coating speed of 10 mm s−1 was employed. The intrinsic structural properties control the overlap of the frontier orbitals, thereby affecting the device performance. Abstract: Despite increasing survival rates of pediatric leukemia patients over the past decades, the outcome of some leukemia subtypes has remained dismal. Drug sensitivity and resistance testing on patient-derived leukemia samples provide important information to tailor treatments for high-risk patients. However, currently used well-based drug screening platforms have limitations in predicting the effects of prodrugs, a class of therapeutics that require metabolic activation to become effective. To address this issue, a microphysiological drug-testing platform is developed that enables co-culturing of patient-derived leukemia cells, human bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells, and human liver microtissues within the same microfluidic platform. This platform also enables to control the physical interaction between the diverse cell types. Herein, it is made possible to recapitulate hepatic prodrug activation of ifosfamide in their platform, which is very difficult in traditional well-based assays. By testing the susceptibility of primary patient-derived leukemia samples to the prodrug ifosfamide, sample-specific sensitivities to ifosfamide in primary leukemia samples are identified. The microfluidic platform is found to enable the recapitulation of physiologically relevant conditions and the testing of prodrugs including short-lived and unstable metabolites. The platform holds great potential for clinical translation and precision chemotherapy selection.

This data helps Wikipedia editors determine where to focus their efforts to improve the online encyclopedia, and enables academic research. In June 2023, the Wikimedia Foundation, helped by Tumult Labs, addressed a long-standing request from Wikipedia editors and academic researchers: it started publishing these statistics with finer granularity, including the country of origin in the daily counts of page views. This new data publication uses differential privacy to provide robust guarantees to people browsing or editing Wikipedia. Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic (and its aftermath) highlights a critical need to communicate health information effectively to the global public. Given that subtle differences in information framing can have meaningful effects on behavior, behavioral science research highlights a pressing question: Is it more effective to frame COVID-19 health messages in terms of potential losses (e.g., “If you do not practice these steps, you can endanger yourself and others”) or potential gains (e.g., “If you practice these steps, you can protect yourself and others”)? Collecting data in 48 languages from 15,929 participants in 84 countries, we experimentally tested the effects of message framing on COVID-19-related judgments, intentions, and feelings. Loss- (vs. gain-) framed messages increased self-reported anxiety among participants cross-nationally with little-to-no impact on policy attitudes, behavioral intentions, or information seeking relevant to pandemic risks. These results were consistent across 84 countries, three variations of the message framing wording, and 560 data processing and analytic choices. Thus, results provide an empirical answer to a global communication question and highlight the emotional toll of loss-framed messages. Critically, this work demonstrates the importance of considering unintended affective consequences when evaluating nudge-style interventions.

26. A model for DHX15 mediated disassembly of A-complex spliceosomes.

Abstract: A critical step of pre-mRNA splicing is the recruitment of U2 snRNP to the branch point sequence of an intron. U2 snRNP conformation changes extensively during branch helix formation, and several RNA-dependent ATPases are implicated in the process. However, the molecular mechanisms involved remain to be fully dissected. We took advantage of the differential nucleotide triphosphates requirements for DExD/H-box enzymes to probe their contributions to in vitro spliceosome assembly. Both ATP and GTP hydrolysis support the formation of A-complex, indicating the activity of a DEAH-enzyme because DEAD-enzymes are selective for ATP. We immunodepleted DHX15 to assess its involvement, and although splicing efficiency decreases with reduced DHX15, A-complex accumulation incongruently increases. DHX15 depletion also results in the persistence of the atypical ATP-independent interaction between U2 snRNP and a minimal substrate that is otherwise destabilized in the presence of either ATP or GTP. These results lead us to hypothesize that DHX15 plays a quality control function in U2 snRNP's engagement with an intron. In efforts to identify the RNA target of DHX15, we determined that an extended polypyrimidine tract is not necessary for disruption of the atypical interaction between U2 snRNP and the minimal substrate. We also examined U2 snRNA by RNase H digestion and identified nucleotides in the branch binding region that become accessible with both ATP and GTP hydrolysis, again implicating a DEAH-enzyme. Together, our results demonstrate that multiple ATP-dependent rearrangements are likely involved in U2 snRNP addition to the spliceosome and that DHX15 may have an expanded role in maintaining splicing fidelity.

27. “Mar de bullying”: turbilhão de violências contra lésbicas, gays, bissexuais, travestis e transexuais na escola

Abstract: This study aimed to understand the experiences and senses of bullying experienced by lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transvestites, transsexuals, and other identities. This qualitative research was conducted with nine participants older than eighteen years and who identified as members of the interest group through interviews conducted from a semi-structured script. The corpus analysis was guided by the social theory of discourse and aided by Kitconc 4.0 software. The reports show the contrast between the temporality of the term bullying, foreign word of the 21st century in the Brazilian context, and the constant presence of violence in the school environment in the trajectories of the participants. The advancement of communicative technologies also constitutes this sea of bullying by widening the reach of violent scenes and globalizing shame, cursing, and punching. The way to deal with this permeates the direct confrontation, encouraging the school community to debate and protect children and adolescents marked by cis-heteronormative hegemony. Thus, it is in the resistance of existence that bodies in assembly hope and claim the rights inherent in life, advancing beyond survival and regulated citizenship. Adolescents and children crossed by bullying are potencies of themselves, and it is up to us, now adults, the ethical commitment to enable other ways of being in this world., Este trabalho teve como objetivo compreender as vivências e os sentidos do bullying experienciados por lésbicas, gays, bissexuais, travestis, transexuais e outras identidades. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa realizada com nove participantes, maiores de dezoito anos e que se identificam como integrantes do grupo de interesse, por meio de entrevistas conduzidas a partir de um roteiro semiestruturado. A análise do corpus foi guiada pela teoria social do discurso e auxiliada pelo software Kitconc 4.0. Os relatos mostram a contraposição entre a temporalidade do termo bullying, estrangeirismo do século XXI no contexto brasileiro, e a constante presença das violências em espaço escolar nas trajetórias das e dos participantes. O avanço das tecnologias comunicativas também constitui esse mar de bullying ao propiciar a ampliação do alcance de cenas violentas e ao globalizar o vexame, o xingamento e o soco. A forma de lidar com isso perpassa o enfrentamento direto, incitando a comunidade escolar a debater e a proteger crianças e adolescentes marcados pela hegemonia cis-heteronormativa. Desse modo, é na resistência do existir que corpos em assembleia esperançam e reivindicam os direitos inerentes à vida, avançando para além da sobrevivência e da cidadania regulada. Adolescentes e crianças atravessadas pelo bullying são potências de si mesmas e cabe a nós, agora adultos, o compromisso ético de possibilitar outras formas de estar neste mundo.

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic (and its aftermath) highlights a critical need to communicate health information effectively to the global public. Given that subtle differences in information framing can have meaningful effects on behavior, behavioral science research highlights a pressing question: Is it more effective to frame COVID-19 health messages in terms of potential losses (e.g., "If you do not practice these steps, you can endanger yourself and others") or potential gains (e.g., "If you practice these steps, you can protect yourself and others")? Collecting data in 48 languages from 15,929 participants in 84 countries, we experimentally tested the effects of message framing on COVID-19-related judgments, intentions, and feelings. Loss- (vs. gain-) framed messages increased self-reported anxiety among participants cross-nationally with little-to-no impact on policy attitudes, behavioral intentions, or information seeking relevant to pandemic risks. These results were consistent across 84 countries, three variations of the message framing wording, and 560 data processing and analytic choices. Thus, results provide an empirical answer to a global communication question and highlight the emotional toll of loss-framed messages. Critically, this work demonstrates the importance of considering unintended affective consequences when evaluating nudge-style interventions.

Abstract: Background: More than 40% of patients with intracranial ependymoma need a salvage treatment within 5 years after diagnosis, and no standard treatment is available as yet. We report the outcome after first relapse of 64 patients treated within the 2nd AIEOP protocol. Methods: We considered relapse sites and treatments, that is, various combinations of complete/incomplete surgery, if followed by standard or hypofractionated radiotherapy (RT) ± chemotherapy (CT). Molecular analyses were available for 38/64 samples obtained at first diagnosis. Of the 64 cases, 55 were suitable for subsequent analyses. Results: The median follow-up was 147 months after diagnosis, 84 months after first relapse, 5-year EFS/OS were 26.2%/30.8% (median EFS/OS 13/32 months) after relapse. For patients with a local relapse (LR), the 5-year cumulative incidence of second LRs was 51.6%, with a 5-year event-specific probability of being LR-free of 40.0%. Tumor site/grade, need for shunting, age above/below 3 years, molecular subgroup at diagnosis, had no influence on outcomes. Due to variation in the RT dose/fractionation used and the subgroup sizes, it was not possible to assess the impact of the different RT modalities. Multivariable analyses identified completion of surgery, the absence of symptoms at relapse, and female sex as prognostically favorable. Tumors with a 1q gain carried a higher cumulative incidence of dissemination after first relapse. Conclusions: Survival after recurrence was significantly influenced by symptoms and completeness of surgery. Only a homogeneous protocol with well-posed, randomized questions could clarify the numerous issues, orient salvage treatment, and ameliorate prognosis for this group of patients.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics is the most important driver of antimicrobial resistance. The aim of the HAPPY PATIENT project is to evaluate the adaptation of European Union (EU) recommendations on the prudent use of antimicrobials in human health by evaluating the impact of a multifaceted intervention targeting different categories of healthcare professionals (HCPs) on common community-acquired infectious diseases, especially respiratory and urinary tract infections.METHODS/DESIGN: HAPPY PATIENT was initiated in January 2021 and is planned to end in December 2023. The partners of this project include 15 organizations from 9 countries. Diverse HCPs (doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians) will be audited by the Audit Project Odense (APO) method before and after an intervention in four different settings: general practice, out of hours services, nursing homes and community pharmacies in four high antibiotic prescribing countries (France, Poland, Greece, and Spain) and one low prescribing country (Lithuania). About 25 individuals from each professional group will be recruited in each country, who will register at least 25 patients with community-acquired infections during each audit period. Shortly before the second registration participants will undertake a multifaceted intervention and will receive the results from the first registration to allow the identification of possible quality problems. At these meetings participants will receive training courses on enhancement of communication skills, dissemination of clinical guidelines with recommendations for diagnosis and treatment, posters for the waiting rooms, and leaflets for patients. Abstract: Finding communication strategies that effectively motivate social distancing continues to be a global public health priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. This crosscountry, preregistered experiment (n = 25,718 from 89 countries) tested hypotheses concerning generalizable positive and negative outcomes of social distancing messages that promoted personal agency and reflective choices (i.e., an autonomy-supportive message) or were restrictive and shaming (i.e., a controlling message) compared with no message at all. Results partially supported experimental hypotheses in that the controlling message increased controlled motivation (a poorly internalized form of motivation relying on shame, guilt, and fear of social consequences) relative to no message. On the other hand, the autonomy-supportive message lowered feelings of defiance compared with the controlling message, but the controlling message did not differ from receiving no message at all. Unexpectedly, messages did not influence autonomous motivation (a highly internalized form of motivation relying on one's core values) or behavioral intentions. Results supported hypothesized associations between people's existing autonomous and controlled motivations and self-reported behavioral intentions to engage in social distancing. Controlled motivation was associated with more defiance and less long-term behavioral intention to engage in social distancing, whereas autonomous motivation was associated with less defiance and more short- and long-term intentions to social distance. Overall, this work highlights the potential harm of using shaming and pressuring language in public health communication, with implications for the current and future global health challenges.

32. Effects of low vs. moderate dose of recreational football on cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of recreational football performed once (LOW) vs. twice (MOD) a week on cardiovascular risk factors in healthy, sedentary men. Body composition, resting blood pressure, blood lipid profile and maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) were measured at baseline, after a 12-week control and training period, using an interrupted time-series study (study 1, n = 18: n = 8, LOW and n = 10, MOD) nested in a randomized parallel trial (study 2, n = 34: n = 18 LOW and n = 16 MOD). After the intervention in study 1, LDL-cholesterol (-12.3 mg·dL-1 [-22.7 to -2.0]) and VO2max (4.5 ml·kg-1·min-1 [1.2-7.8 ]) changed in LOW whereas differences were found in weight (-2.1 kg [-3.7 to -0.4]), BMI (-0.7 kg·m-2 [-1.2 to -0.1]), total cholesterol (-22.2 mg·dL-1 [-36.0 to -8.4]), no-HDL-cholesterol (-17.5 mg·dL-1 [-30.5 to -4.5]), LDL-cholesterol (-14.9 mg·dL-1 [-23.6 to -6.2]) and VO2max (5.7 ml·kg-1·min-1 [2.8-8.6]) in MOD. Study 2 showed no evidence of differences between groups. Our results therefore suggest positive health effects of recreational football even when performed at low frequency as it can happen in real context.Highlights Moderate and high amount of recreational football practice (i.e. 2 or 3 h a week) have been shown to be effective to improve health-related factors in both healthy and unhealthy people.Scarce data are present regarding the effect of a low frequency of recreational football practice (i.e. 1 h a week) that is often usual in a real context.Our results showed the practice of recreational football, once a week, is effective for improving some cardiovascular risk factors (maximal oxygen consumption and LDL-cholesterol) in sedentary, healthy middle-aged men.Moreover, practising recreational football once or twice a week seems to lead to similar positive health adaptations.

Abstract: This chapter focuses on criminal offences punishing the counterfeiting of artworks within the Italian legal system, highlighting the peculiarities of provisions aimed at punishing behaviors which are only indirectly harmful to the cultural heritage, while at the same time providing a direct protection to the art market - to its transparency and cleanliness - as an end in itself, as well as a way to advance a layer of preventive protection to the interests of potential buyers and collectors. The specific offences of counterfeiting, placing on the market, and providing false statements or documentation concerning authenticity, are discussed, also in relation to further criminal offences (like fraud and fencing), together with the specific penalties and exceptions provided by Italian criminal law. Finally, the chapter focuses on possible responsibilities of achives' boards and curators, particularly with respect to failure to report counterfeited artworks.

Abstract: [Otros] A surface air-cooled oil cooler (SACOC) is a passive heat exchanger used to evacuate a large quantity of heat from the oil circuit of a turbofan engine to its secondary flow with minimal perturbation. Using the secondary flow as a heat sink has the advantage of the evacuated enthalpy being available in the nozzle. The performance of a SACOC is therefore measured in terms of maximum heat release capacity with minimal pressure loss and flow perturbations. These heat exchangers are typically composed of parallel fins and are usually tested in bespoke wind tunnels where the interaction between the three-dimensional high velocity flow and the heat exchangers is evaluated. Modern numerical computations that include the solution of the fluid equations in the flow field and a conjugate thermal problem can be also performed. This numerical approach, once validated, allows a complete and computationally affordable analysis of the aero-thermodynamic performance of the SACOC. In this work, a first comparison between both experimental and computational perspectives is presented in terms of pressure and temperature profiles to achieve a complete characterization of the device. This double experimental numerical perspective allows comparing the behaviour of the different fins of the SACOC depending on their relative position but also to trust the numerical conclusions with experimental robust data.

Abstract: Cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in Manaus, Brazil, resurged in late 2020 despite previously high levels of infection. Genome sequencing of viruses sampled in Manaus between November 2020 and January 2021 revealed the emergence and circulation of a novel SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern. Lineage P.1 acquired 17 mutations, including a trio in the spike protein (K417T, E484K, and N501Y) associated with increased binding to the human ACE2 (angiotensin-converting enzyme 2) receptor. Molecular clock analysis shows that P.1 emergence occurred around mid-November 2020 and was preceded by a period of faster molecular evolution. Using a two-category dynamical model that integrates genomic and mortality data, we estimate that P.1 may be 1.7- to 2.4-fold more transmissible and that previous (non-P.1) infection provides 54 to 79% of the protection against infection with P.1 that it provides against non-P.1 lineages. Enhanced global genomic surveillance of variants of concern, which may exhibit increased transmissibility and/or immune evasion, is critical to accelerate pandemic responsiveness.

40. Exploring Stories, Reading Environments: Flow, Immersion, and Presence as Processes of Becoming

Abstract: The article aims to deal with flow, immersion, and presence and their relation with storytelling and the exploration of space. In sections 2 and 3, we introduce the three concepts both from a psychological and from a neurocognitive approach. In section 4, we analyse a particular video game genre, the “walking simulator,” which focuses on immersion in a narrative and a space rather than in the mechanics of the game and which generates a profound user experience. In paragraph 5, we examine virtual reality artworks based on both storytelling and presence within a space, discussing their immersive nature. We hypothesise that the very concept of experience can be adopted as a key term to describe media engagement, since immersion is an essential requirement for an experience to take place. Finally, in section 6 we introduce and discuss the transformative character of experience, which is the mutual and co-constitutive cognitive becoming triggered by audiovisual media engagements.

Abstract: BackgroundThe Chr17q12-21.2 region is the strongest and most consistently associated region with asthma susceptibility. The functional genes or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are not obvious due to linkage disequilibrium.ObjectivesWe sought to comprehensively investigate whole-genome sequence and RNA sequence from human bronchial epithelial cells to dissect functional genes/SNPs for asthma severity in the Severe Asthma Research Program.MethodsExpression quantitative trait loci analysis (n = 114), correlation analysis (n = 156) of gene expression and asthma phenotypes, and pathway analysis were performed in bronchial epithelial cells and replicated. Genetic association for asthma severity (426 severe vs 531 nonsevere asthma) and longitudinal asthma exacerbations (n = 273) was performed.ResultsMultiple SNPs in gasdermin B (GSDMB) associated with asthma severity (odds ratio, >1.25) and longitudinal asthma exacerbations (P < .05). Expression quantitative trait loci analyses identified multiple SNPs associated with expression levels of post-GPI attachment to proteins 3, GSDMB, or gasdermin A (3.1 × 10-9 -4). Higher expression levels of GSDMB correlated with asthma and greater number of exacerbations (P < .05). Expression levels of GSDMB correlated with genes involved in IFN signaling, MHC class I antigen presentation, and immune system pathways (false-discovery rate-adjusted P < .05). rs1031458 and rs3902920 in GSDMB colocalized with IFN regulatory factor binding sites and associated with GSDMB expression, asthma severity, and asthma exacerbations (P < .05).ConclusionsBy using a unique set of gene expression data from lung cells obtained using bronchoscopy from comprehensively characterized subjects with asthma, we show that SNPs in GSDMB associated with asthma severity, exacerbations, and GSDMB expression levels. Abstract: Zonal modeling is a common technique for the numerical certification of fire-extinguishing systems, however it is not valid to simulate the complex physical phenomena that occurs near the agent injection. We present a multi-scale method for the accurate generation of inflow boundary conditions valid for zonal modeling based on the description of the phase change of a rapidly depressurised mist of a fire suppression system. The generation of accurate boundary conditions includes the characterization of the injection of the fire suppression agent from atomization to evaporation and mixing. The multi-scale methodology is based on the use of a high fidelity multiphase conservative level set LES for the characterization of the nozzle to develop an empirical model for primary breakup. Secondly, a low fidelity particle-based method with phase change and unsteady RANS is used for parametric studies. This multi-scale approach requires an affordable computational effort. The multi-scale methodology is tested in a system consisting of a pressurised fire extinguishing agent (Novec-1230) that is injected into the ambient through a nozzle that produces the atomization of the agent. Abstract: Background. A prospective 2002-2014 study stratified 160 patients by resection extent and histological grade, reporting results in 2016. We re-analyzed the series after a median of 119 months, adding retrospectively patients' molecular features.Methods. Follow-up of all patients was updated. DNA copy number analysis and gene-fusion detection could be completed for 94/160 patients, methylation classification for 68.Results. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) at 5/10 years were 66/58%, and 80/73%. Ten patients had late relapses (range 66-126 mo), surviving after relapse no longer than those relapsing earlier (0-5 y). On multivariable analysis a better PFS was associated with grade II tumor and complete surgery at diagnosis and/or at radiotherapy; female sex and complete resection showed a positive association with OS. Posterior fossa (PF) tumors scoring >= 0.80 on DNA methylation analysis were classified as PFA (n = 41) and PFB (n = 9). PFB patients had better PFS and OS. Eighteen/32 supratentorial tumors were classified as RELA, and 3 as other molecular entities (anaplastic PXA, LGG MYB, HGNET). RELA had no prognostic impact. Patients with 1q gain or cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A (CDKN2A) loss had worse outcomes, included significantly more patients >3 years old (P = 0.050) and cases of dissemination at relapse (P = 0.007).Conclusions. Previously described prognostic factors were confirmed at 10-year follow-up. Late relapses occurred in 6.2% of patients. Specific molecular features may affect outcome: PFB patients had a very good prognosis; 1q gain and CDKN2A loss were associated with dissemination. To draw reliable conclusions, modern ependymoma trials need to combine diagnostics with molecular risk stratification and long-term follow-up.

Abstract: This work is focused on a polymorphic and crystallographic study of a novel p-type organic semiconductor 2,7-bis(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)benzo[b]benzo[4,5]thieno[2,3-d]thiophene (OEG-BTBT). The well-known BTBT core is functionalized by eight-atom-long oligoethylene glycol side chains. Our results demonstrate the discovery of three crystal forms of the OEG-BTBT molecule, namely, Form I, Form II, and Form III, in different experimental conditions. Crystal structures of Form I and Form III are reported, while only unit cell indexing of Form II could be determined. Form I and Form II are enantiotropically related, and Form II is stable at temperatures higher than 127 °C. The kinetics of transformation to Form II was studied by the Avrami equation. Form III is a solvate crystal form which is rarely observed in the field of organic electronics, and upon release of dichloromethane, it converts to Form I. Furthermore, we studied the mechanical properties of the Form I crystals, which exhibit plastic bending upon applying mechanical stress in the [100] direction. Abstract: Non-euclidean versions of some primal-dual iterative optimization algorithms are presented. In these algorithms the proximal operator is based on Bregman-divergences instead of euclidean distances.Double loop iterations are also proposed which can be used for the minimization of a convex cost function consisting of a sum of several parts: a differentiable part, a proximable part and the composition of a linear map with a proximable function. While the number of inner iterations is fixed in advance in these algorithms, convergence is guaranteed by virtue of an inner loop warm-start strategy, showing that inner loop ``starting rules" can be just as effective as ``stopping rules'' for guaranteeing convergence. Abstract: Hyaluronic acid-based nanoparticles (HA NPs) can be used to deliver a protein cargo to cells overexpressing HA receptors such as CD44 since they combine the low toxicity of the carrier and the retention of the protein integrity with the receptor-mediated internalization. HA properties play a crucial but sometimes unclear role in managing the formation and stability of the meshwork, cell interactions, and ultimately the protein entrapment efficacy. Nowadays, microfluidic is an innovative technology that allows to overcome limits linked to the NPs production, guaranteeing reproducibility and control of individual batches. Taking advantage of this technique, in this research work, the role of HA weight average molecular weight (Mw) in NPs formation inside a microfluidic device has been specifically faced. Based on the relationship between polymer Mw and solution viscosity, a methodological approach has been proposed to ensure critical quality attributes (size of 200 nm, PDI ≤ 0.3) to NPs made by HA with different Mw (280, 540, 710 and 820 kDa). The feasibility of the protein encapsulation was demonstrated by using Myoglobin, as a model neutral protein, with an encapsulation efficiency always higher than 50%. Lastly, all NPs samples were successfully internalized by CD44-expressing cells.

Abstract: In these recent years nanotechnology has gained interest as a powerful tool for drug delivery. It allows to overcome important drawbacks such as drug poor physico-chemical proprieties, toxicity and bioavailability challenges thereby ensuring better therapeutic efficacy with low side-effects and, sometimes, it permits to discover new drug applications. This review aims to analyse the impact of nanotechnology in the pharmaceutical development of VERTEPORFIN (VP), a benzoporphyrin derivative, which was conceived as second generation photosensitizer (PS) in photodynamic therapy (PDT), and later became a milestone in ophthalmology for treating age-related macular degeneration (AMD) disease. VP photoinduced and non-photoinduced biological features will be surveyed and nanotechnology implication in improving VP performances outlined. Currently, VP loaded nanostructured delivery systems (VP-nanoSs), administered alone or in combination with other drugs, are widely studied for the treatment of many widespread diseases including several tumoral forms and severe fibrotic conditions.

Abstract: Cardiovascular prevention represents a cornerstone of modern strategies to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease. It is of key importance to prevent cardiovascular diseases and associated events, not only to reduce morbidity and mortality, but also to increase the years of wellness in the aging population and to make the growing socio-economic burden imposed by cardiovascular events more sustainable. The current approach to prevention is based on an integrated use of effective lifestyle measures and, whenever appropriate, of antihypertensive and antidiabetic drugs, lipid-lowering agents and antiplatelet drugs. Given that population characteristics, in terms of ethnicity, demography and lifestyle habits, and healthcare system organizations differ among countries, international guidelines are not always applicable to specific countries and, often, are difficult to translate into daily clinical practice. In order to afford the specific features of Italy, 10 Scientific Societies and Research Institutions, mostly involved in preventive strategies, contributed to the present Italian consensus document, which includes brief, practical recommendations to support the preventive actions within the physician community and the general practice setting.

50. Effects of power resistance training program with elastic bands on body composition, muscle strength and physical function in older women

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a power-strength resistance program with elastic bands on body composition, physical function, and muscle strength in older women. For such purpose, a randomized controlled trial with a pre-post-intervention design was conducted. Thus, 58 healthy, physically independent, sedentary women, aged 65-85 years, were randomly allocated to the intervention (n = 28) or control group (n = 30). Measurements of body composition (total mass, total fat mass, total skeletal-muscle mass, and body fat percentage), isokinetic muscle strength of knee flexors and extensors (at 60º/second and 180º/second), and physical performance (flexibility, agility/dynamic balance, and mobility) were taken pre-intervention and after 20 weeks of a power-strength protocol (light loads at maximum speed) with elastic bands consisting of 42 sessions (including familiarization) of between 80 and 90 minutes, with six exercises per session. The intensity was controlled with the OMNI-RES scale of perceived exertion. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) and covariance (ANCOVA) was carried out. All parameters of physical function, isokinetic strength, and body composition significantly improved (p < .05) in the intervention group, except the muscle mass and the knee flexion strength at 60º/sec, on which no statistical difference was observed (p > .05). All the variables got worsened or did not change in the control group. A resistance program with elastic bands using light loads and performing at maximum speed can reverse the deterioration in body composition, muscle strength, and physical function, and offer significant physical benefits in sedentary older women.
