Purpose: To synthesise findings from published studies on barriers and facilitators to Black men accessing and utilising post-treatment psychosocial support after prostate cancer (CaP) treatment. Methods: Searches of Medline, Embase, PsycInfo, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and Central, CINAHL plus and Scopus were undertaken from inception to May 2021. English language studies involving Black men aged ³18 and reporting experiences of, or suggestions for, psychosocial support after CaP treatment were included. Low or moderate quality studies were excluded. Searches identified 4,453 articles and following deduplication, 2,325 were screened for eligibility. Two independent reviewers carried out screening, quality appraisal and data extraction. Data were analysed using thematic synthesis. Results: Ten qualitative studies involving 139 Black men were included. Data analysis identified four analytical constructs. Experience of psychosocial support for dealing with treatment side-effects (including impact on self-esteem, fear of recurrence); barriers to use of psychosocial support (such as perceptions of masculinity, stigma around sexual dysfunction); facilitators to use of psychosocial support (including the influence of others and self-motivation); and practical solutions for designing and delivering post-treatment psychosocial support (the need for trusted healthcare and cultural channels). Conclusions: Few intervention studies have focused on behaviours among Black CaP survivors, with existing research predominantly involving Caucasian men. There is a need for a collaborative approach to CaP care that recognises not only medical expertise, but also the autonomy of Black men as experts of their illness experience, and the influence of cultural and social networks.

How can we increase voter turnout among low-propensity voters? Researchers and practitioners have found interventions that increase voter turnout, but these interventions tend to increase turnout among individuals already likely to vote, and therefore appear to exacerbate existing inequalities in participation. This project developed and tested an intervention designed to encourage people with a lower prior likelihood of voting into the electorate. First, in summer 2018, we surveyed a diverse sample of voting and non-voting Californians about their political attitudes. We concluded that feeling inadequately informed and feeling inefficacious may contribute to low turnout rates. Based on the results of the survey, we designed messages to address these feelings and tested them in an experiment to increase turnout in two special elections in June 2019 by targeting these sentiments among people with infrequent prior turnout records. Letters with information and encouragement about the voting process did not increase turnout in the subsequent election. We conclude that further work is needed to identify interventions that successfully increase turnout among low-propensity voters.

The 2018-2019 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Design/Build/Fly (DBF) competition requires design and manufacture of a multi-role aircraft to support aircraft-carrier-based operations. The aircraft must carry a removable, rotating rotordome, transitioning from flight configuration to a 3 ft wide, stowed configuration, and carry and drop attack stores. These capabilities and the flight performance are evaluated in three flight missions and one ground mission, at competition in Tucson, Arizona. The driving factor for the aircraft design was simplicity and manufacturing capability. The ERAU Prescott DBF team did not consider score maximization as an element in aircraft design, but rather chose a design that would be relatively simple and easy to build and test many times with a small team. Many design elements thus rely heavily on the use of the four-axis hotwire CNC foam cutter and the two axis laser cutter, to quickly cut foam, balsa, and plywood parts designed with CAD software. The resulting aircraft satisfies all explicit and derived requirements, and will be compete in the 2019 AIAA DBF Competition on April 11, 2019. Background Recruiting participants to trials can be extremely difficult. Identifying strategies that improve trial recruitment would benefit both trialists and health research. Objectives To quantify the effects of strategies for improving recruitment of participants to randomised trials. A secondary objective is to assess the evidence for the effect of the research setting (e.g. primary care versus secondary care) on recruitment. Search methods We searched the Cochrane Methodology Review Group Specialised Register (CMR) in the Cochrane Library (July 2012, searched 11 February 2015); MEDLINE and MEDLINE In Process (OVID) (1946 to 10 February 2015); Embase (OVID) (1996 to 2015 Week 06); Science Citation Index & Social Science Citation Index (ISI) (2009 to 11 February 2015) and ERIC (EBSCO) (2009 to 11 February 2015). Selection criteria Randomised and quasi-randomised trials of methods to increase recruitment to randomised trials. This includes non-healthcare studies and studies recruiting to hypothetical trials. We excluded studies aiming to increase response rates to questionnaires or trial retention and those evaluating incentives and disincentives for clinicians to recruit participants. Data collection and analysis We extracted data on: the method evaluated; country in which the study was carried out; nature of the population; nature of the study setting; nature of the study to be recruited into; randomisation or quasi-randomisation method; and numbers and proportions in each intervention group. We used a risk difference to estimate the absolute improvement and the 95% confidence interval (CI) to describe the effect in individual trials. We assessed heterogeneity between trial results. We used GRADE to judge the certainty we had in the evidence coming from each comparison. Main results We identified 68 eligible trials (24 new to this update) with more than 74,000 participants. Studio instrumental and vocal teaching has, for centuries, played a vital role in music education. Music Teachers’ Associations (MTAs) exist in all States of Australia and internationally, and are particularly supportive of instrumental teachers in a somewhat isolating profession. While also involved with school music, it is the studio teacher who is their chief focus. Little, however, is known of the history of the Victorian MTA and the part it has played in supporting music education. This study investigates the Victorian Music Teachers’ Association (VMTA), reporting on the Association’s contributions to music education in Australia. The Association’s origins are examined, and the influence of other Australian MTAs and parallel organisations internationally is noted. The views of the surviving former Presidents, Professor Max Cooke, OAM (b. 1924), Associate Professor Ronald Farren-Price, AM (b. 1930), Mr Graham Bartle, OAM (b. 1928) and Mr Darryl Coote (b. 1963) are presented, and the work of VMTA stalwart Eileen Stainkamph, both within and outside the VMTA, is discussed. Throughout the thesis, voices that are in danger of being forgotten are given some prominence. The relationships between the Association and other organisations are discussed, and the under-appreciated support for composition, seen sporadically throughout the VMTA’s existence, is examined. A discussion of professional development activities and the wideranging advantages of membership is included, and the VMTA’s journal Music and the Teacher (MAT) is appraised. The significance of social aspects of the Association’s work is evaluated, and peripheral activities such as the production of fundraising cookbooks are discussed. It is argued that significant identities in the Association’s history have shaped its direction and activities more consistently than educational, musical and social imperatives. Aurorasaurus is a citizen science project that offers a new, global data source consisting of ground-based reports of the aurora. For this case study, aurora data collected during the 17–18 March 2015 geomagnetic storm are examined to identify their conjunctions with Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellite passes over the high latitude auroral regions. This unique set of aurora data can provide ground-truth validation of existing auroral precipitation models. Particularly, the solar wind driven, Oval Variation, Assessment, Tracking, Intensity, and Online Nowcasting (OVATION) Prime 2013 (OP-13) model and a Kp-dependent model of Zhang-Paxton (Z-P) are utilized for our boundary validation efforts. These two similar models are compared for the first time. Global equatorward auroral boundaries are derived from the OP-13 model and the DMSP Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI) far ultraviolet (FUV) data using the Z-P model at a fixed flux level of 0.2 erg cm−2 s−1. These boundaries are then compared with citizen science reports as well as with each other. Even though there are some large differences between the global boundaries for a few cases, the average difference is about 1.5° in geomagnetic latitude, with OP-13 being equatorward of Z-P model. When these boundaries are compared with each other as a function of local time, no clear overall trend as a function of local time was observed. It is also found that the ground-based reports are more consistent with the predictions of the OP-13 model.

Achilles Tatius' novel Leukippe and Kleitophon is not just a story of two loverspitted against a hostile world. Rather, both love affair and love story are tiedinto wider social networks, becoming almost as much of a concern to Kleitophon'sfriends and interlocutors as they are to the hero-narrator himself. Fromthe very beginning, when Kleitophon sits down with a stranger in a garden inthe port town of Sidon, the story is framed by male exchange of ideas, desires,and experience. Its reading audience is invited to engage not in the retellingof a public event, but in the sharing of a private experience between sympatheticindividuals. Such a narrative atmosphere, and the (carefully circumscribed)plurality of listening viewpoints which are admitted for considerationin the course of the novel, profoundly shape our readerly engagement with thelove affair of Leukippe and Kleitophon. The argument for male cameraderie asa fundamental feature of story and narrative is a straightforward one, but runscounter to the main currents of scholarly focus on Achilles Tatius' novel.Elizabeth Mitchell is a graduate student of classical archaeology at HarvardUniversity, currently writing a PhD on the visual strategies of fantastic spacesin Roman art. Whether writing about texts or imagery, she is interested in theways in which marginal characters modulate our approach to the “centre” ofa narrative.

The Cancer Genomics Hub (CGHub) is the online repository of the sequencing programs of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), including The Cancer Genomics Atlas (TCGA), the Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia (CCLE) and the Therapeutically Applicable Research to Generate Effective Treatments (TARGET) projects, with data from 25 different types of cancer. The CGHub currently contains >1.4 PB of data, has grown at an average rate of 50 TB a month and serves >100 TB per week. The architecture of CGHub is designed to support bulk searching and downloading through a Web-accessible application programming interface, enforce patient genome confidentiality in data storage and transmission and optimize for efficiency in access and transfer. In this article, we describe the design of these three components, present performance results for our transfer protocol, GeneTorrent, and finally report on the growth of the system in terms of data stored and transferred, including estimated limits on the current architecture. Our experienced-based estimates suggest that centralizing storage and computational resources is more efficient than wide distribution across many satellite labs. Failure to establish meaningful and effective transition for undergraduates can lead to academic underachievement. Student engagement represents a key component of student success. This study sought to investigate the impact of a bespoke transition programme featuring a wide range of innovative, student-centred activities on enhancing students' engagement with educationally effective practices through examining student relations with others, learning and the discipline. For the study 104 undergraduates on a Sport Development course at a British university undertook a five-week transition programme. Data were collected via weekly questionnaires and focus groups at the end of weeks 1, 3 and 5. The investigation revealed that transition programmes require a high-intensity, novel and varied timetable supported by a student-centred staff team. Effective transition programmes can enhance students' engagement with educationally effective practices. Future research should investigate the longer-term impact of such programmes.

Self-assembled monolayers (SAM) on gold surfaces have provided excellent methods for nanoscale surface preparation for such studies. However, extension of this work requires the specific immobilization of whole protein domains and the direct incorporation of recombinant proteins into SAM is still problematic. In this study a short random coil peptide has been designed to insert into thioalkane layers by formation of a hydrophobic helix. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) studies show that specific immobilization via the internal cysteine is achieved. Addition of the peptide sequence to the terminus of a protein at the genetic level enables the production of a range of recombinant fusion-proteins with good yield. SPR shows that the proteins display the same gold-binding behavior as the peptide. Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and the main risk factor for stroke. Previous research has demonstrated that treatment of hypertension significantly reduces cardiovascular risk and the incidence of cardiovascular events. Since the prevalence of hypertension increases with age, so the absolute reduction in risk associated with treatment and its resultant benefits are greater in the elderly population. Despite this, a situation known as the rale of halves has been shown to exist. This indicates that half of the hypertensive population are not known, half of those known are not treated and half of those treated are not controlled. Addressing this anomaly requires information on all potentially at risk patients and accessing the large amounts of data held in general practice computer systems is one of the best ways of generating such information. However, whilst practitioners can access the information required to inform management of individual patients, the data required to inform strategic decision making are not as readily available. The research described in this thesis evaluates the provision of different levels of feedback, developed from computerized data, on identification, treatment and control of hypertension in the elderly. This was done by means of a randomised controlled trial. Fifty two Scottish general practices were recruited and randomised to three groups. A Control group which received no intervention, an Audit group which received feedback of audit data and a Strategic group which received audit feedback plus data prioritising patients by absolute risk of death from stroke. Electronic data on demography, morbidity and prescribing were extracted from practice computer systems annually from 1999-2001 and used to develop feedback. Participants represented both urban and rural practice and a range of practice size, list size and deprivation level. The data presented demonstrate that over the period of study, the proportion
