The project involved an experimental investigation of the synthesis and the electrical transport properties of semimetal- semiconductor based heterostructures and devices. The structures- consisted of elemental (Sb) semimetals in combination with antimonide based III-V semiconductors (GaSb). The investigation of these novel semimetal-semiconductor heterostructures was motivated by their unique electronic properties and potential device applications, including high conductivity interconnects, double-barrier semimetal-base resonant tunneling transistors, and nanostructures operating in the mesoscopic regime. The structures were synthesized using molecular beam epitaxy, and their structural and electrical transport properties were investigated. In addition to substantially enhanced understanding of this materials combination the project resulted in the demonstration of double barrier Sb/GaSb resonant tunneling structures exhibiting negative differential resistances and Sb submicron loops displaying Aharonov-Bohm oscillations.

Spatial patterns of energy deposition on the nanometer scale are currently believed to be a major factor in determining the biological effectiveness of ionizing radiation. If the most common precursors of biologically significant lesions are clusters of ionization in or near DNA, then intramolecular energy and charge transfer along DNA chains could be very important in lesion development. This paper describes investigations of these phenomena through model calculations and measurements of radical yields in oriented DNA exposed to proton irradiation.

Multi-Frequency Modulation (MFM) has been developed at NPS using both differential quadrature-phase-shift-keying (DQPSK) and differential-quadrature- amplitude-modulation (DQAM) encoding formats. Previous applications of these encoding formats were on industry standard computers (PC) over a 16-20 kHz channel. This report discusses the implementation of MFM to a voice frequency channel of 200-3400 Hz, for possible future use with high-speed modems over switched telephone networks. Research and testing for this report included the DQPSK and differential 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation (D16-QAM) encoding formats implemented on PCs. Experimental results of the implemented MFM signal were comparable to theory with acceptable bit error rates for input signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) of 15 dB and higher.

Monte Carlo simulation of energy absorption in oriented fibers of DNA is used to model the dependence of free radical yields on the orientation of the fibers relative to a flux of ionizing radiation. We assume a large asymmetry in the thermal conductivity of the fibers that permits rapid transport of vibrational energy along a DNA molecule, but not between different molecules. Based on this assumption, our model predicts that thymine radical anions have a significantly greater probability of undergoing a secondary protonation reaction if they are produced by a flux that is incident perpendicular to the DNA molecules. These results are in qualitative agreement with experimental data on the yield of 5,6-dihydrothymin-5-yl radicals when samples of oriented DNA were exposed at 77 K to neutrons. This report describes the development of a prototype Manpower Management Information System within the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD). It describes major modification development to produce linkage capabilities among independent, Service-specific, computerized data bases permitting data displays of wide aggregation. It provides the ability to compare missions, mission to function and function to skill level within the DoD. (Author)

The electrical conductivity of the oxygen depleted material YBa2Cu3O6.4 has been determined as a function of temperature. The conductance is more accurately described as variable range hopping between localized states than as activated conductivity characteristic of a semiconductor. The finding of a granular deposition of immunoglobulin in the kidney in experimental animal models of glomerulonephritis has been been interpreted as resulting from the random deposition of immune complexes in the glomeruli. Recent data suggests that although immune complex deposition may be an important factor in some forms of glomerulonephritis, the in situ formation of immune complexes between circulating anti-kidney antibodies and fixed glomerular capillary wall antigens may also be a significant factor in the pathogenesis of some animal models of glomerulonephritis. To examine the characteristics of discontinuously represented glomerular capillary wall antigens in the rat, monoclonal antibodies were generated against a glomerular plasma membrane fraction, depleted of glomerular basement membrane, prepared from isolated Lewis rat glomeruli. A total of 17 hybridomas, generated from the fusion of splenocytes obtained from mice immunised with the glomerular membrane fraction produced monoclonal antibodies which reacted with discontinuously represented antigens in the glomerulus and renal tubules. One further hybridoma secreted a monoclonal antibody which reacted with an antigen present on glomerular and tubular nuclear membranes. No hybridomas were produced which secreted a monoclonal antibody which reacted with linearly arrayed glomerular basement membrane antigens. Two of these monoclonal antibodies, both of the IgM subclass and code-named PH7 and SC5, produced a heavy granular glomerular staining pattern when examined by indirect immunofluorescence microscopy. Neither monoclonal antibody was kidney specific, with reactivity being demonstrated with a number of non-renal tissues. When administered intravenously to normal Lewis rats both SC5 and PH7 induced a mild proteinuric lesion. Results are given on rarefied gas-surface interaction measurements made on satellites orbiting in the upper atmosphere. Sputtering erosion of Au and Ag surfaces by N2 impacts at 9 eV was less than 50 A/yr at 200 km. From the sputtering data, a theoretical model of sputtering was developed. Tests of a new type of energy transfer probe, using temperature sensors, were made on the SNAPSHOT satellite. Results showed the probe can detect energy transfer rates of 20 micro W/cm squared. The probe can be used to measure satellite drag at altitudes up to 600 km where the atmospheric density is great enough to produce measurable heating. Satellite instrumentation for measuring electron ejection of 10 to the-9th A/cm squared from surfaces by neutral gas impacts was built and tested.
