- Abstract

- Abstract
Searching and selecting an adequate methodology for daylight modeling is essential in the design of energy efficient buildings that guarantee the visual, physical and psychological comfort of their occupants. The first step in determining the indoor building illuminance lies in knowing the outdoor illuminance. This dissertation addresses this key aspect through different strategies such as luminous efficacy models and the determination of the angular distribution of the sky's luminance. Daylight is strongly determined by sky conditions. The CIE/ISO standard provides a good general framework to represent the real conditions of the sky, covering the entire probable spectrum of skies, and has been used as a reference throughout this work. The characterization of the skies according to the CIE standard requires experimental measurements of the luminance distribution of the sky, scarcely recorded in terrestrial meteorological facilities. The thesis proposes, as alternatives for the classification of skies according to the CIE taxonomy, the use of meteorological indices, sky images and algorithms based on artificial intelligence. The structure and efficiency of the machine learning algorithms used, both neural networks and decision trees, have been optimized through feature selection procedures in the case of the use of meteorological indices and through image pre-processing techniques, as a step prior to using the classification algorithm. La tesis ha desarrollado también un nuevo modelo de eficacia luminosa, calibrado localmente, con excelentes resultados tanto al utilizarlo para todos los tipos de cielo como para condiciones de cielo claro, cubierto y parcialmente cubierto., This doctoral thesis has been supported thanks to the funding of the PROGRAMA DE FORMACIÓN DE PROFESORADO UNIVERSITARIO (PIRTU ORDEN EDU/556/2019), the Mobility Grant for Doctoral Students Stays of the University of Burgos, Program (2021), and the following competitive funding research projects: 1. - Abstract
The effect of wild ungulate density on ecosystems varies according to different factors: climate and physiography conditions, forest type, management history, and herbivore identity. In this study, we evaluated the effect of historically high densities of red deer (Cervus elaphus L.) on the soil fungal communities in Mediterranean ecosystems using 30 paired plots, open on the one hand and exclosure plots on the other one. Plots were established at the end of 2020 in a perimeter-fenced hunting estate of 6600 ha in Toledo, Spain. Three months after plots were established, we analysed fungal communities in 60 soil samples using Illumina 250-bp paired-end sequencing. We estimated changes in total fungal richness and in the richness of trophic groups through Linear Mixed Effects models using fenced/unfenced type and deer habitat use as fixed variables and the location of the plots and the main tree host species as random variables. Fungal composition was analysed using non-metric multidimensional scaling and permutational multivariate ANOVA; edaphic characteristics were incorporated to explain differences. Soil fungal communities were not differentially affected by excluding ungulates for three months. Areas with high deer densities had a richer saprotrophic community and where lowland environments were dominated by the main tree hosts Quercus faginea and Quercus ilex. Arbutus unedo was found in mountain areas where there was less herbivore pressure, a greater richness of ectomycorrhizal and lichenized fungi and soils positively associated to nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and organic matter levels.

- Abstract
Pharmacological interventions are emerging as potential avenues of alleviating age-related disease. However, the knowledge of ongoing clinical trials as they relate to aging and pharmacological interventions is dispersed across a variety of mediums. In this review we summarize 136 age-related clinical trials that have been completed or are ongoing. Furthermore, we establish a database that describe the trials (AgingDB, www.agingdb.com) keeping track of the previous and ongoing clinical trials, alongside their outcomes. The aim of this review and database is to give people the ability to easily query for their trial of interest and stay up to date on the latest results. In sum, herein we give an overview of the current pharmacological strategies that have been applied to target human aging., Pharmacological interventions are emerging as potential avenues of alleviating age-related disease. - Abstract
The human aging brain is characterized by changes in network efficiency that are currently best captured through longitudinal resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI). These studies however are challenging due to the long human lifespan. Here we show that the mouse animal model with a much shorter lifespan allows us to follow the functional network organization over most of the animal’s adult lifetime. We used a longitudinal study of the functional connectivity of different brain regions with rs-fMRI under anesthesia. Our analysis uncovers network modules similar to those reported in younger mice and in humans (i.e., prefrontal/default mode network (DMN), somatomotor and somatosensory networks). Statistical analysis reveals different patterns of network reorganization during aging. Female mice showed a pattern akin to human aging, with de-differentiation of the connectome, mainly due to increases in connectivity of the prefrontal/DMN cortical networks to other modules. Our male cohorts revealed heterogenous aging patterns with only one group confirming the de- differentiation, while the majority showed an increase in connectivity of the somatomotor cortex to the Nucleus accumbens. In summary, in line with human work, our analysis in mice supports the concept of de-differentiation in the aging mammalian brain and reveals additional trajectories in aging mice networks.

- Abstract
There is abundant research on the representation of the LGTBIQ+ community in fiction. However, there are few works that have examined the reception processes that connect audiences with the characters who belong to said group.Aims/Objectives: Analyze the effect of the audiovisual representation of the sexual intensity of affection expressions between LGTBIQ+ characters in the reception processes.Methodology: An online experiment was carried out with a design of two random groups (N = 177, 30.5 % LGTBIQ+ people), with the independent variable being sexual intensity (low versus high) in queer romantic love scenes. Sociodemographic and individual differences variables (frequency of contact and attitudes towards the LGTBIQ+ community) were measured. Immediately after viewing the audiovisual pieces, the reception variables (identification with the protagonist, evaluation, parasocial interaction, and felt emotions) were evaluated. Results: The results showed that both ways of expressing affection exerted a similar effect on the reception processes. Belonging to the LGTBIQ+ community, contact with LGTBIQ+ people, and maintaining favorable attitudes towards said group were related to a more positive reception.Discussion: Individual differences act as predictor variables of reception processes, as proposed by the model of differential susceptibility to media effects. Conclusions: Our work contributes to the research on reception processes in which people who belong to stigmatized groups are involved, in this case, the LGTBIQ+ community, Existe abundante investigación sobrela representación del colectivo LGTBIQ+ en la ficción.

- Abstract
Cu+ -chaperones are a diverse group of proteins that allocate Cu+ ions to specific copper proteins, creating different copper pools targeted to specific physiological processes. Symbiotic nitrogen fixation carried out in legume root nodules indirectly requires relatively large amounts of copper, for example for energy delivery via respiration, for which targeted copper deliver systems would be required. MtNCC1 is a nodule-specific Cu+ -chaperone encoded in the Medicago truncatula genome, with a N-terminus Atx1-like domain that can bind Cu+ with picomolar affinities. MtNCC1 is able to interact with nodule-specific Cu+ -importer MtCOPT1. MtNCC1 is expressed primarily from the late infection zone to the early fixation zone and is located in the cytosol, associated with plasma and symbiosome membranes, and within nuclei. Consistent with its key role in nitrogen fixation, ncc1 mutants have a severe reduction in nitrogenase activity and a 50% reduction in copper-dependent cytochrome c oxidase activity. A subset of the copper proteome is also affected in the ncc1 mutant nodules. Many of these proteins can be pulled down when using a Cu+ -loaded N-terminal MtNCC1 moiety as a bait, indicating a role in nodule copper homeostasis and in copper-dependent physiological processes. Overall, these data suggest a pleiotropic role of MtNCC1 in copper delivery for symbiotic nitrogen fixation.

- Abstract
Introduction: Optical Projection Tomography (OPT) and light sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM) are high resolution optical imaging techniques, ideally suited for ex vivo 3D whole mouse brain imaging. Although they exhibit high specificity for their targets, the anatomical detail provided by tissue autofluorescence remains limited. Methods: T1-weighted images were acquired from 19 BABB or DBE cleared brains to create an MR template using serial longitudinal registration. Afterwards, fluorescent OPT and LSFM images were coregistered/normalized to the MR template to create fusion images. Results: Volumetric calculations revealed a significant difference between BABB and DBE cleared brains, leading to develop two optimized templates, with associated tissue priors and brain atlas, for BABB (OCUM) and DBE (iOCUM). By creating fusion images, we identified virus infected brain regions, mapped dopamine transporter and translocator protein expression, and traced innervation from the eye along the optic tract to the thalamus and superior colliculus using cholera toxin B. Fusion images allowed for precise anatomical identification of fluorescent signal in the detailed anatomical context provided by MR. Discussion: The possibility to anatomically map fluorescent signals on magnetic resonance (MR) images, widely used in clinical and preclinical neuroscience, would greatly benefit applications of optical imaging of mouse brain. These specific MR templates for cleared brains enable a broad range of neuroscientific applications integrating 3D optical brain imaging.

- Abstract
We present a micro-Raman study of InP/InGaP tandem junction photovoltaic nanowires. These nanowires render possible InGaP compositions that cannot be made in thin films due to strain. The micro-Raman spectra acquired along the nanowires reveal the existence of compositional changes in the InGaP alloy associated with the doping sequence. The heavily Zn-doped InGaP (x is the In molar fraction) side of the tunnel diode is Ga rich, x = 0.25, with respect to the n-type and intrinsic segments of the top cell, which are close to the nominal composition of the NWs (x = 0.35). The p-type end segment is still Ga-rich. Electromagnetic resonances are observed in the tunnel diode. The Raman signal arising from the InGaP side of the tunnel diode is significantly enhanced. This enhancement permits the observation of a Raman mode that can be associated with an LO phonon plasmon coupled mode (LOPCM). This mode has not been previously reported in the literature of InGaP, and it permits the Raman characterization of the tunnel diode. The analysis of this mode and its relation to the LO phonon modes of the alloy, InP-like and GaP-like, allows to establish an apparent one-mode behavior for the phonon plasmon coupling. It indicates that hole plasma couples to the GaP-like LO mode. The LOPCMs are modeled using the Lindhard Mermin formalism for the dielectric function.

- Abstract
Precise lens modeling is a critical step in time delay studies of multiply imaged quasars, which are key for measuring some important cosmological parameters (specially $H_0$). However, lens models (in particular those semi-automatically generated) often show discrepancies with the observed flux-ratios between the different quasar images. These flux-ratio anomalies are usually explained through differential effects between images (mainly microlensing) that alter the intrinsic magnification ratios predicted by the models. To check this hypothesis, we collect direct measurements of microlensing to obtain the histogram of microlensing magnifications. We compare this histogram with recently published model flux-ratio anomalies and conclude that they cannot be statistically explained by microlensing. The average value of the model anomalies ($0.74\,$magnitudes) significantly exceeds the mean impact of microlensing ($0.33\,$magnitudes). Moreover, the histogram of model anomalies presents a significant tail with high anomalies ($|\Delta m| \ge 0.7$ magnitudes) which is completely unexpected from the statistics of microlensing observations. Microlensing simulations neither predict the high mean nor the fat tail of the histogram of model anomalies. We perform several statistical tests which exclude that microlensing can explain the observed flux-ratio anomalies (although Kolmogorov-Smirnov, which is less sensitive to the tail of the distributions, is not always conclusive). Thus, microlensing cannot statistically explain the bulk of flux-ratio anomalies, and models may explore different alternatives to try to reduce them. In particular, we propose to complement photometric observations with accurate flux ratios of the broad emission lines obtained from integral field spectroscopy to check and, ideally, constrain lens models.

- Abstract
A double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction associated with an anterolateral ligament (ALL) reconstructions is performed. The semitendinosus and gracilis are harvested. At knee maximum flexion, the anteromedial (AM) femoral tunnel is performed in the AM footprint area. Through the anterolateral portal, the tip of the outside-in femoral guide is placed in the posterolateral footprint area. The guide sleeve is pushed onto the lateral femoral cortex at the ALL attachment. At 110° knee flexion, the posterolateral-ALL tunnel is performed. The tibial ACL tunnel is performed as usual. The tibial guide is placed between the ALL tibial attachment and the tibial ACL tunnel entrance to perform the ALL tibial tunnel. The gracilis graft is introduced from caudal to cranial, achieving fixation with a 6-mm diameter screw (outside-in). The AM femoral fixation is achieved with a suspension device. ACL tibial graft fixation is achieved with a screw. Afterward, the gracilis is passed under the fascia lata to the tibial entry point. A 6-mm diameter screw is placed from the external cortex into the tibial ALL tunnel. The biomechanical advantage of the double-bundle ACL reconstruction with the biomechanical advantage of the ALL anatomic reconstruction is achieved., Depto. de Anatomía y Embriología, Fac. de Medicina, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
The relationship between psychotic symptoms and global measures of functioning has been widely studied. No previous study has assessed so far the interplay between specific clinical symptoms and particular areas of functioning in first-episode psychosis (FEP) using network analysis methods. A total of 191 patients with FEP (age 24.45 ± 6.28 years, 64.9% male) participating in an observational and longitudinal study (AGES-CM) comprised the study sample. Functioning problems were assessed with the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS), whereas the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to assess symptom severity. Network analysis were conducted with the aim of analysing the patterns of relationships between the different dimensions of functioning and PANSS symptoms and factors at baseline. According to our results, the most important nodes were “conceptual disorganization”, “emotional withdrawal”, “lack of spontaneity and flow of conversation”, “delusions”, “unusual thought content”, “dealing with strangers” and “poor rapport”. Our findings suggest that these symptoms and functioning dimensions should be prioritized in the clinical assessment and management of patients with FEP. These areas may also become targets of future early intervention strategies, so as to improve quality of life in this population., Depto. de Psicobiología y Metodología en Ciencias del Comportamiento, Fac. de Psicología, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
Irreparable rotator cuff tears (RCTs) cause shoulder pain and disfunction. Management of RCT patients has classically been difficult due to few treatment options. Since Mihata et al. in 2013 introduced the superior capsular reconstruction (SCR) technique as a treatment option, it has become widespread among surgeons, especially for young active patients in whom reverse shoulder arthroplasty is not recommended. With SCR, a reduced humeral head can be maintained and superior displacement is avoided, improving shoulder pain and restoring active shoulder motion. A variety of grafts may be used, but the surgery can be technically complicated. An arthroscopic lasso-loop traction technique for SCR is described here, which simplifies graft shoulder reduction by traction from the anteromedial and posteromedial portals., Depto. de Anatomía y Embriología, Fac. de Medicina, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
Ischiofemoral impingement is a source of hip pain derived from impingement between the lesser trochanter and the ischium. Lesser trochanter excision has been recommended for recalcitrant ischiofemoral impingement through either an anterior or posterior approach. However, neither of these approaches involves refixation of the iliopsoas tendon. We describe an endoscopic procedure involving anterior trochanter-plasty, minimizing the risk of sciatic complications, with refixation of the partially detached iliopsoas tendinous insertion, potentially minimizing compromise to hip flexion strength and anterior hip stability., Depto. de Anatomía y Embriología, Fac. de Medicina, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
Background and aims: The increase in the number of people who require bilingual and multilingual speech-language intervention justifies reviewing the current practices of Speech-Language Therapists (SLTs), who are ethically responsible for providing the best possible evidence-based intervention to the families with whom they work. There is, therefore, a clear need to competently serve populations with linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds. The goal of this work was to document the beliefs, needs and practices of SLTs in Spain, as well as to obtain a deeper understanding of linguistic, cultural and professional competencies from the perspective of SLTs. Method: Based on previous work in other countries, a questionnaire was designed to study multilingual and multicultural speech-language intervention in Spain. The sample consisted of 208 SLTs working with a diverse population across regions of Spain. Results: Eighty-four percent of the survey respondents reported that they speak more than one language, but only 56% considered themselves bilingual; 77% reported having faced the challenge of working with multilingual people; 86% reported that they had not received training focused on this diversity and 92% reported that they lacked resources for conducting bilingual speech and language evaluations. Nevertheless, there were significant differences in the beliefs and practices when bilingual and monolingual SLTs were compared. Conclusions: This work, with results similar to those of previous studies, provides a first step for designing methods, policies and resources to improve professional competencies and multilingual practices.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Education is one of the most important tools available to policymakers and non-governmental bodies to promote a change in the behavior of society and to address the climate crisis, in line with the 4th and 13th Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Project-based learning (PBL) addresses real and global challenges and allows the academic and professional formation of students. As part of the reflection stage of the educational action research method using the Business Canvas Model (BMC), pedagogic deficiencies were identified in the PBL and a didactic proposal was elaborated to emulate the interaction of students with the ecosystems of society. A prototype for improving the management of organic manures as soil amendments was initially developed, to provide the students with a quick start on the first steps of the proposed project. In the 10 sessions designed for the PBL (Make it happen!), the students elaborate a more sophisticated artifact in response to the demands of potential clients, as per the outcomes of the primary market research (5th session). Active teaching methods and tools, such as a modified template of the BMC with the Rumsfeld’s matrix, aid the metacognition of students and their competences development. In a double session of the PBL, the primary market research is organized with key stakeholders of the agroindustry to enquire about the feasibility of the implementation of the technological solution and the logistics at farm level. Finally, the evaluation relies on the suitability of the upgraded prototype to respond customers’ demands.

- Abstract
CO2 hydrogenation to methanol has the potential to serve as a sustainable route to a wide variety of hydrocarbons, fuels and plastics in the quest for net zero. Synergistic Pd/In2O3 (Palldium on Indium Oxide) catalysts show high CO2 conversion and methanol selectivity, enhancing methanol yield. The identity of the optimal active site for this reaction is unclear, either as a Pd−In alloy, proximate metals, or distinct sites. In this work, we demonstrate that metal-efficient Pd/In2O3 species dispersed on Al2O3 can match the performance of pure Pd/In2O3 systems. Further, we follow the evolution of both Pd and In sites, and surface species, under operando reaction conditions using X-ray Absorption Spectroscpy (XAS) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. In doing so, we can determine both the nature of the active sites and the influence on the catalytic mechanism.

- Abstract
In order to provide a better framework for the interpretation of fossil pollen records, a set of 49 modern pollen samples collected across different habitats of SW Iberia, categorised by context and sample type (soil vs moss), were selected to explore pollen–vegetation relationships by multivariate analysis and identify possible biases in pollen representativeness. The distribution of both samples and pollen taxa in the plots is successfully explained according to specific environmental variables in some clusters (A, B and E) in which plant communities depend on certain environmental conditions. On the other hand, other clusters (C, D and F) are better explained by opposition to some variables and suggest a wider range of adaptability of their floristic communities. The classification of samples by context consistently explains their differences in vegetal and environmental terms. However, some discrepancies seem to be better explained by sample type (soil vs moss), which raises some questions on how taphonomic factors may cause biases in both modern and fossil pollen samples.

- Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic might affect mental health. Data from population-representative panel surveys with multiple waves including pre-COVID data investigating risk and protective factors are still rare. Methods: In a stratified random sample of the German household population (n=6,684), we conducted survey-weighted multiple linear regressions to determine the association of various psychological risk and protective factors assessed between 2015 and 2020 with changes in psychological distress (PD; measured via PHQ-4) from pre-pandemic (average of 2016 and 2019) to peri-pandemic (both 2020 and 2021) time points. Control analyses on PD change between two pre-pandemic time points (2016 and 2019) were conducted. Regularized regressions were computed to inform on which factors were statistically most influential in the multicollinear setting. Results: PHQ-4 scores in 2020 (M=2.45) and 2021 (M=2.21) were elevated compared to 2019 (M=1.79). Several risk factors (catastrophizing, neuroticism, asking for instrumental support) and protective factors (perceived stress recovery, positive reappraisal, optimism) were identified for the peri-pandemic outcomes. Control analyses revealed that in pre-pandemic times, neuroticism and optimism were predominantly related to PD changes. Regularized regression mostly confirmed the results and highlighted perceived stress recovery as most consistent influential protective factor across peri-pandemic outcomes. Conclusions: We identified several psychological risk and protective factors related to PD outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Comparison to pre-pandemic data stress the relevance of longitudinal assessments to potentially reconcile contradictory findings. Implications and suggestions for targeted prevention and intervention programs during highly stressful times such as pandemics are discussed.

- Abstract
Mediterranean ecosystems are frequently invaded by pyrophytic scrubs such as Halimium lasianthum that colonize areas traditionally used by livestock. A diverse fungal community is associated with this kind of vegetation, playing an important ecological role in these ecosystems. However, uncontrolled expansion of these shrubs considerably increases the risk of wildfires in these stands and, hence, fire-prevention treatments are needed. To investigate the long-term effects of two different forest-fire-prevention treatments on the soil fungal community, we analyzed these communities 9 years after prescribed burning or mechanical shredding were carried out in scrubland dominated by H. lasianthum. Neither of the fire-prevention treatments had a negative long-term effect on the abundance or richness of ectomycorrhizal fungi. However, saprotrophs and lichenized fungi experienced negative effects. Soil fertility significantly affected the distribution of fungi according to their functional groups, and pH was the most influential variable in terms of the distribution of edible species. Our findings indicate that forest management practices to prevent forest fires does not negatively affect the fungal community in the long-term, but for lichens and decomposers. Moreover, prescribed burning is suggested as a more economical way of reducing the risk of wildfires without affecting the ecology of the fungal community.

- Abstract
[EN] Five decades of intensive groundwater exploitation have brought important economic, social and environmental changes in Medina del Campo Groundwater Body (MCGWB). Declining piezometric levels have worsened water quality, increased the costs of water supply and abstraction, and drained connected wetlands and rivers. This chapter presents the different methods and tools developed to assess the impacts and effectiveness for adaptation to droughts of the selected NAS strategies in biophysical, economic and social terms. It follows the methodologies presented in Chaps. 4, 5 and 6. It also summarizes the approaches for integrating all these assessments, as well as the main conclusions and lessons learnt. Important progress has been achieved on understanding and modelling the aquifer-system dynamics and functioning. First, geological and geophysical data analysis, debugging and integration have provided a basis for constructing a set of geological models of the MCGWB. Second, water balance components need to be updated through a deeper analysis of the recharge and groundwater abstractions (pumping). Third, a trend analysis of critical groundwater-related ecosystem services (GRES) and piezometric levels points at groundwater abstraction reductions as the most effective measure for a widespread recovery of the groundwater levels and storage. Fifth, the proposed managed artificial recharge would have limited effects on the recovery of the surface water bodies and no effect on the groundwater bodies. Sixth, the environmental reconstruction from a sedimentary record of the main wetland bed (Lagunas Reales) provides a reference knowledge base to understand the system response to human and climate changes. Finally, different barriers for design and implementation of NAS strategies have been identified and evaluated. Particularly, the lack of effective interaction mechanisms among the different actors involved/interested in the process could play a key role in the future.

- Abstract
The existing literature does not yet provide sufficient guidance regarding the allocation of certain end-of-life resources between recycling points to maximize circular economy and sustainability outcomes in sports organizations. Nor is it evident what the elements of the circular economy are for Latin American sports organizations. In this sense, the objective of this research is to conceive a circular economy model for Latin American sports organizations. The research starts from a theoretical and methodological analysis which allows the generation and validation of 21 indicators, grouped into six variables, which are used in the diagnosis, design of the model and the validation of the results. The diagnosis made in five countries: Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Argentina. Among the main results, it was obtained that the Management System in sport does not constitute a factor analyzed from the perspective of the circular economy in sport. The selection of sports suppliers is not consistent with the environment and is reflected in the consumption of sports materials, an indicator with a lower factor load.

- Abstract
Cistus ladanifer-dominated ecosystems are widely distributed in the Western Mediterranean basin and are affected by recurrent fires. Although these scrublands were traditionally considered unproductive, these systems provide significant ecological benefits via mushroom production, which has increased interest in better understanding these ecosystems to restore and promote productivity. We analyzed 48 plots located in Supra- and MesoMediterranean regions in western Spain to assess the soil fungal community and their ecological drivers using ITS2 rDNA Illumina Miseq. The study plots comprised young (early-stage successional stands), middle- (middle-stage successional stands), and late-stage stands. Shannon diversity index values for total fungi were higher under a MesoMediterranean than under a SupraMediterranean climate type, whereas the richness values for ectomycorrhizal (EcM) taxa were higher in late-stage stands than in the younger stands. EcM community composition was influenced by stand age, climatic variables and edaphic parameters. These C. ladanifer-dominated ecosystems support diverse fungi, including edible species such as Boletus, Lactarius, and Laccaria, under specific precipitation, temperature, and late-stage stand factor conditions. Although forest management cannot modify temperature and precipitation, management strategies that consider mosaic landscapes to reduce the severity of potential fires and that retain late successional stands could provide suitable habitats for promoting fungal diversity, production, and function in these scrubland systems.
