1. Negative partisanship in changing political contexts in Western Europe

Abstract: Negative partisanship (NPID), capturing strong antipathies developed towards one or more parties, is shown to be a fundamental motivation for political and interpersonal judgments and actions. Despite mounting interest in negative political attitudes lately, there is little discussion on how they changed throughout and can be understood in the context of the drastic transformations of the Western European ideological and partisan landscape in the past decades. This dissertation examines the extent and nature of NPID and what we can learn about its consequences in these changing political contexts. The first chapter maps changes in the prevalence and nature of NPID over time. It shows a declining trend after decades of stability in the 2010s. I argue that this decline is indicative of disillusionment and disengagement with, instead of openness to, what the party system offers. I show that those most affected by this decline are also people that are the least invested in politics and who exhibit the highest indifference and alienation from parties. I argue that these tendencies have implications for the legitimacy of democratic actors and processes. The second chapter re-examines the linkage between ideological polarization and negative partisanship in societies. NPID is fostered by polarisation along salient ideological conflicts within electorates, but the precise mechanism shifts with the changing relevance of different ideological cleavages over time and across political contexts. The growing dominance of populist ideas promotes new value-based and moralised conflicts that take precedent over the traditionally important left-right ideological extremity in motivating negative partisanship. The third chapter examines the power of negative partisanship in making interpersonal judgments. Using an experiment to disentangle the effects of ideology and partisan labelling in the United Kingdom, the study demonstrates that hostility is largely driven by perceived ideological (in)compatibility. Nevertheless, when faced with out-partisans whose political views resemble those of oneself, people ignore similarities and make judgments based solely on the partisan "otherness‟.

2. Trajectory optimization for mobile manipulator motion planning

Abstract: State-of-the-art robotics research has been progressively focusing on autonomous robots that can operate in unconstrained environments and interact with people. Specifically, manipulation tasks in Ambient Assisted Living environments are complex, involving an unknown number of parameters. Recent years show a trend of successfully applied machine learning approaches affecting day-to-day life. Similar tendencies are perceivable in robotics, existing methods being enhanced with learning-based components. This thesis studies approaches for incorporating task-specific knowledge into the motion planning process that can be shared across a heterogeneous fleet of robots. A step towards data-driven strategies will allow the field to break away from manuallytweaked, heuristics- or state-machine-based solutions and provide good scaling properties, while maintaining operation safety around humans at a very high level. The presented work proposes a motion planning framework employing Learning from Demonstration to encode task-specific motions, facilitating skill-transfer and improving state-of-the-art in motion planning. Resulting algorithms are compared against other methods in a series of everyday tasks. While different optimisation methods have different benefits, it is possible to build them into systems that both generalise and scale well with the number of tasks and number of robot platforms. This thesis shows that optimisation-based planners are ideal for incorporating prior knowledge into a motion-planning system.

3. The legacy of Anglo-American textualism

Abstract: Textualism is the doctrine of statutory interpretation propounded by a small group of US federal court judges, including the late Justice Antonin Scalia. Whilst the doctrine has attracted a great deal of scholarly attention, few have considered its historical development. In this dissertation, textualism is analysed in order to uncover the core principles and sets of rules from which it is comprised. Then, the development of these principles and sets of rules is traced back through the treatises on statutory interpretation published in England and America in the Victorian era, which were well-known to and frequently cited by Justice Scalia. Textualism is revealed to be an Anglo-American doctrine that emerged over the course of the nineteenth century; and it was made explicit in the treatises on statutory interpretation, which developed via a transatlantic scholarly dialogue. The doctrine fell out of favour in the US as the nineteenth century drew to a close; and around the same time, the rule prohibiting recourse to legislative history, a core feature of textualism, became subject to significant judicial challenge in England. The matter was resolved by a landmark decision in 1906, after which time the doctrine became firmly entrenched in England until approximately the 1980s. Textualism's long tenure in England demonstrates how a doctrinal common law theory typical of the late Victorian era persisted for more than a century despite variations in judicial application of the rules from which the doctrine is comprised, criticism from within the legal community, and significant social change over time. The modern US revival of this doctrine is further testament to textualism's tenacity. Whilst many scholars have found the doctrine to be problematic, it has remained attractive to common law judges from the time of its emergence in the middle of the nineteenth century through to the present. This is so because textualism was developed and refined through doctrinal legal scholarship, and as a result, it is consistent with traditional common law modes of reasoning, and it is tailor-made to meet the needs of judges deciding cases.

4. Cellular immunity of Drosophila willistoni reveals novel complexity in insect anti-parasitoid defense

Abstract: Coevolution of hosts and their parasites has shaped heterogeneity of effector hemocyte types, providing immune defense reactions with variable effectiveness. In this work, we characterize hemocytes of Drosophila willistoni, a species that has evolved a cellular immune system with extensive variation and a high degree of plasticity. Monoclonal antibodies were raised and used in indirect immunofluorescence experiments to characterize hemocyte subpopulations, follow their functional features and differentiation. Pagocytosis and parasitization assays were used to determine the functional characteristics of hemocyte types. Samples were visualized using confocal and epifluorescence microscopy. We identified a new multinucleated giant hemocyte (MGH) type, which differentiates in the course of the cellular immune response to parasitoids. These cells differentiate in the circulation through nuclear division and cell fusion, and can also be derived from the central hematopoietic organ, the lymph gland. They have a binary function as they take up bacteria by phagocytosis and are involved in the encapsulation and elimination of the parasitoid. Here, we show that, in response to large foreign particles, such as parasitoids, MGHs differentiate, have a binary function and contribute to a highly effective cellular immune response, similar to the foreign body giant cells of vertebrates.

5. Acute neuroendocrine changes after traumatic brain injury

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic hypopituitarism (PTHP) is a significant, but often neglected consequence of traumatic brain injury (TBI). RESEARCH QUESTION: We aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical features and diagnostic approaches of PTHP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and Web of Science were searched. 45 articles of human studies evaluating acute endocrine changes following mild, moderate and severe TBI were selected. RESULTS: Severity of TBI seems to be the most important risk factor of PTHP. Adrenal insufficiency (AI) was present in 10% of TBI patients (prevalence can be as high as 50% after severe TBI), and hypocortisolemia is a predictor of mortality and long-term hypopituitarism. Suppression of the thyroid axis in 2-33% of TBI patients may be an independent predictor of adverse neurological outcome, as well. 9-36% of patients with severe TBI exhibit decreased function of the somatotrophic axis with a divergent effect on the central nervous system. Arginine-Vasopressin (AVP) deficiency is present in 15-51% of patients, associated with increased mortality and unfavorable outcome. Due to shear and injury of the stalk hyperprolactinemia is relatively common (2-50%), but it bears little clinical significance. Sex hormone levels remain within normal values. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: PTHP occurs frequently after TBI, affecting various axis and determining patients' outcome. However, evidence is scarce regarding exact epidemiology, diagnosis, and effective clinical application of hormone substitution. 6. Validity of using Els\'asser variables to study the interaction of compressible solar wind fluctuations with a coronal mass ejection

Abstract: Alfv\'enic fluctuations, as modelled by the non-linear interactions of Alfv\'en waves of various scales, are seen to dominate solar wind turbulence. However, there is also a non-negligible component of non-Alfv\'enic fluctuations. The Els\"asser formalism, which is central to the study of Alfv\'enic turbulence due to its ability to differentiate between parallel and anti-parallel Alfv\'en waves, cannot strictly separate wavemodes in the presence of compressive magnetoacoustic waves. In this study, we analyse the deviations generated in the Els\"asser formalism as density fluctuations are naturally generated through the propagation of a linearly polarised Alfv\'en wave. The study was performed in the context of a coronal mass ejection (CME) propagating through the solar wind, which enables the creation of two solar wind regimes, pristine wind and a shocked CME sheath, where the Els\"asser formalism can be evaluated. In these two regimes we studied the deviations of the Els\"asser formalism in separating parallel and anti-parallel components of Alfv\'enic solar wind perturbations generated by small-amplitude density fluctuations. We used an ideal 2.5D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model with an adiabatic equation of state. An Alfv\'en pump wave was injected into the quiet solar wind by perturbing the transverse magnetic field and velocity components. This wave subsequently generates density fluctuations through the ponderomotive force. A CME was injected by inserting a flux-rope modelled as a magnetic island into the quasi-steady solar wind. The presence of density perturbations creates an approximately 10% deviation in the Els\"asser variables and reflection coefficient for the Alfv\'en waves as well as a deviation of approximately 0.1 in the cross helicity in regions containing both parallel and anti-parallel fluctuations., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract: Generalising the Elsasser variables, we introduce the Q-variables. These are more flexible than the Elsasser variables, because they also allow to track waves with phase speeds different than the Alfven speed. We rewrite the MHD equations with these Q-variables. We consider also the linearised version of the resulting MHD equations in a uniform plasma, and recover the classical Alfven waves, but also separate the fast and slow magnetosonic waves in upward and downward propagating waves. Moreover, we show that the Q-variables may also track the upward and downward propagating surface Alfven waves in a non-uniform plasma, displaying the power of our generalisation. Abstract: Scientists studying deep ocean microbial ecosystems use limited numbers of sediment samples collected from the seafloor to characterize important life-sustaining biogeochemical cycles in the environment. Yet conducting fieldwork to sample these extreme remote environments is both expensive and time consuming, requiring tools that enable scientists to explore the sampling history of field sites and predict where taking new samples is likely to maximize scientific return. We conducted a collaborative, user-centered design study with a team of scientific researchers to develop DeepSee, an interactive data workspace that visualizes 2D and 3D interpolations of biogeochemical and microbial processes in context together with sediment sampling history overlaid on 2D seafloor maps. Based on a field deployment and qualitative interviews, we found that DeepSee increased the scientific return from limited sample sizes, catalyzed new research workflows, reduced long-term costs of sharing data, and supported teamwork and communication between team members with diverse research goals., Comment: Accepted to CHI 2024. 16 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. Abstract: In diesem Beitrag wird auf die kulturelle und diskursive Bedeutung von Kindheit in der Gesellschaft fokussiert und danach gefragt, inwiefern sich in den Medien der sich in den Sozialwissenschaften abzeichnende Paradigmenwechsel, nämlich Kinder als eigenständige Akteure und Subjekte ihres Lebens zu betrachten, zeigt. Dazu wird exemplarisch auf der Grundlage eines Samples aus auflagenstarken Tages- und Wochenzeitungen der Schweiz aus dem Jahr 2018 untersucht, wie über Kinder und Kindheiten geschrieben wird. Aus einer diskursanalytischen Perspektive wird das Ziel verfolgt, Einblick in das «Sprechen über» die Phänomene «Kind/Kindheiten» in den Medien zu gewähren. Es zeigt sich, dass «Kind/Kindheiten» in den ausgewählten Schweizer Zeitungen im Rahmen ihrer politischen Positionierung bearbeitet, mitunter zu politischen Zwecken instrumentalisiert werden und generationale Ordnungsvorstellungen, wie bspw. Schutzbedürftigkeit, Unschuld u. a. mittransportiert werden. Texte, in denen das Kind spricht und seine Erfahrungen einbringt, bleiben marginal. Die ausgewählten Artikel aus den Schweizer Zeitungen verdeutlichen, dass die generationale (aber auch familiäre und geschlechtliche) Ordnung im Sinne einer «natürlichen» Tatsache dargestellt, durch Expertenaussagen untermauert und in diesem Sinne reproduziert wird.

Abstract: Der Beitrag bearbeitet die Frage nach der Angemessenheit der Maßstäbe, an denen sich Perfektionierung bemisst und in welchen (pädagogischen) Zusammenhang Perfektionierung einzuordnen ist. Denn die Zielperspektive Perfektionierung dynamisiert Konzepte wie Bildung, Erziehung, Unterstützung und Begleitung. Dabei lässt sich Perfektion allenfalls retrospektiv konstatieren. Für diese Perspektive bietet der Beitrag eine historische Reflexion an und bearbeitet die Frage, welche Relevanz Perfektion und heute Optimierung in der Theorie der Erziehung und Bildung zukommt.

Abstract: Der Beitrag untersucht mittels Aktenanalysen, welche Verständnisse häuslicher Gewalt abklärende Fachpersonen im Kindesschutz entwickeln. Die Befunde weisen auf ein unterkomplexes Verständnis häuslicher Gewalt hin, das sich als Polarisierung und Tabuisierung manifestiert. Damit ist die Gefahr verbunden, die Komplexität häuslicher Gewalt zu verkennen und die verschiedenen Betroffenheiten, insbesondere jene der Kinder, zu vernachlässigen. Um dem Problem zu begegnen, werden systemische Zugänge als sensibilisierende Konzepte und Heuristiken einer professionellen Kindesschutzarbeit eingeführt.

Abstract: In der Einleitung wird der Begriff ‚Perfektionierung‘ in seinen diversen inhaltlichen, theoretischen und assoziativen Facetten entfaltet. Es zeigen sich Motive wie körperliche Selbstvermessung, Ernährung, Fitness und Psychopharmaka-Optimierung sowie einer effektiveren, produktiveren und aktiveren Lebensführung bis hin zu post- und transhumanistischen Vorstellungen, die in den unterschiedlichen Disziplinen verortet werden. Entlang von Konservativismus, Liberalismus und Sozialismus wird herausgearbeitet, dass es zu ‚Perfektionierung‘ konträre Einschätzungen gibt und sich durch alle weltanschaulichen Lager hindurch Befürworter*innen wie Gegner*innen einer Perfektionierung des Menschen finden. Vor diesem Hintergrund zeichnet sich der sozial- und geisteswissenschaftliche Gesprächsbedarf ab, der in dem vorliegenden Band bearbeitet wird.

Abstract: This article discusses the correlations between childhood and welfare against the historical background of the development of welfare states as a space for many children and childhoods. Thus, the relationship between the generational order and the welfare order starts with the invention of socio-political interventions for childhood and family, among others, in the increasingly important profession of social work. This line of argument leads to the identification of theoretical concepts in the research on children’s understandings of well-being in terms of the indeterminacy of “the child”; further, the importance of the way professionals and the welfare state address childhood is explored.

Abstract: Das vom Schweizerischen Nationalfonds (SNF) finanzierte Projekt Wohlbefinden von Kindern in der deutschsprachigen Schweiz (WoKidS) fragt, wann, unter welchen Bedingungen und wie Kinder Wohlbefinden erleben. Das Forschungsprojekt folgt dem Paradigmenwechsel der Frage nach dem Wohlergehen und Wohlbefinden von Kindern und erforscht, was ihnen wichtig ist und wie sie ihren Alltag gestalten, nicht mehr vermittelt über Erwachsene, sondern durch die Kinder. Damit geht es darum, empirisch herauszuarbeiten, was Kinder selber unter Wohlbefinden verstehen und was sie aus ihrer eigenen Sicht brauchen, damit sie sich wohlfühlen und damit es ihnen gut geht. Für diese Forschungsperspektive bietet der Beitrag einen Einblick in theoretische Perspektiven und ethische Aspekte der Forschung zum subjektiven Wohlbefinden von Kindern sowie Erhebungsmethoden, Samplingstrategie und Auswertungsmethoden. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden erste empirische Hinweise aus der laufenden Feldforschung des Projekts WoKidS diskutiert, die sich mit den Narrationen der Kinder zu den Themen Sicherheit sowie Schule, Freundschaften und Familie befassen.

Abstract: In Kindertageseinrichtungen (Kitas) gestalten viele unterschiedlich ausgebildete Personen gemeinsam mit den Kindern den pädagogischen Alltag. Auch Zivildienstleistende (Zivis) können dort einen Einsatz absolvieren. Anhand von ethnographischem Datenmaterial aus dem Dissertationsprojekt «Agency von Kindern in der Kita» fokussiert dieser Artikel darauf, wie Zivis in der Kita positioniert werden und wie sie sich selbst positionieren. In Anlehnung an die Grounded Theory werden unterschiedliche Positionierungen der Zivis herausgearbeitet. Diese Positionierungsleistungen anhand dreier Kategorien (Der Zivi als Nicht-Fachkraft, der Zivi als kontrollierender Erwachsener sowie der Zivi als unterhaltender Narr (in) der Kindergruppe) werden in Hinblick auf die Chancen und Herausforderungen für den pädagogischen Alltag in der Kita diskutiert.

Abstract: „Kindheit“ bildet den gemeinsamen begrifflichen Anker aller Beiträge im vorliegenden Sammelband, die von aktuellen und ehemaligen Mitarbeiter*innen des Lehrstuhls Sozialpädagogik der Universität Zürich verfasst wurden und die in ihrer Diversität Teil eines Diskussions- und Arbeitszusammenhanges sind, der sich 2020 zu der jetzt vorliegenden Publikation zusammengefunden hat. Von dem Begriff der Kindheit ausgehend entfalten die Autor*innen(-teams) ihre je spezifischen Perspektiven, Schwerpunktsetzungen und Fragestellungen auf Phänomene, die mit Kindheiten in Zusammenhang stehen, sowie auf Diskurse über Kinder und Kindheit(en). Abstract: Überforderungseinwände wurden bisher vor allem gegen konsequentialistische und deontologische Ethiken gerichtet. Der vorliegende Beitrag geht der Frage nach, inwiefern auch tugendethische Ansätze solchen Einwänden ausgesetzt sind. Dabei wird zwischen Überforderungseinwänden unterschieden, die sich aus der Ontologie der Tugenden selbst ergeben, und solchen, die aus Kernthesen der Tugendethik resultieren. Mit Blick auf beide Problemstellungen wird geprüft, wie eine adäquate Tugendlehre und -ethik aussehen könnte, die geeignet ist, solchen Einwänden zu entgehen.

Abstract: ‘Candidatus Methanophagales’ (ANME-1) is an order-level clade of archaea responsible for anaerobic methane oxidation in deep-sea sediments. The diversity, ecology and evolution of ANME-1 remain poorly understood. In this study, we use metagenomics on deep-sea hydrothermal samples to expand ANME-1 diversity and uncover the effect of virus–host dynamics. Phylogenetic analyses reveal a deep-branching, thermophilic family, ‘Candidatus Methanospirareceae’, closely related to short-chain alkane oxidizers. Global phylogeny and near-complete genomes show that hydrogen metabolism within ANME-1 is an ancient trait that was vertically inherited but differentially lost during lineage diversification. Metagenomics also uncovered 16 undescribed virus families so far exclusively targeting ANME-1 archaea, showing unique structural and replicative signatures. The expansive ANME-1 virome contains a metabolic gene repertoire that can influence host ecology and evolution through virus-mediated gene displacement. Our results suggest an evolutionary continuum between anaerobic methane and short-chain alkane oxidizers and underscore the effects of viruses on the dynamics and evolution of methane-driven ecosystems.

Abstract: Der Problemzusammenhang zwischen liberaler Demokratie als Staats- und Lebensform, politischer und ökologischer Bildung und einer angemessenen Einrichtung und Neuausrichtung menschlicher Naturverhältnisse im Lichte des menschengemachten Klimawandels ist nicht zuletzt auf Grund der Bewegung ‚Fridays for Future‘ ein Thema, das in der aktuellen öffentlichen Diskussion dauerpräsent ist. Zur Debatte stehen neue Formen der „Gestaltung von Wirtschaft, Politik und Gesellschaft“ bis hin zur „Etablierung ganz neuer Mensch-Natur-Verhältnisse“ (Brand 2019, S. 79; Curren und Metzger 2019). Mit diesem sozioökologisch ambitionierten Transformationsprojekt einer Schaffung von ‚grünen‘ Bürger:innen (Bell 2004) und Gesellschaften im Zeitalter des Anthropozäns (Horn und Bergthaller 2019) sind eine Reihe von Grundsatzfragen verbunden, die das Selbstverständnis liberaler Demokratien und ihrer Erziehungs- und Bildungssysteme in ihrem normativen Kern betreffen.

Abstract: Background: Insects have specialized cell types that participate in the elimination of parasites, for instance, the lamellocytes of the broadly studied species Drosophila melanogaster. Other drosophilids, such as Drosophila ananassae and the invasive Zaprionus indianus, have multinucleated giant hemocytes, a syncytium of blood cells that participate in the encapsulation of the eggs or larvae of parasitoid wasps. These cells can be formed by the fusion of hemocytes in circulation or originate from the lymph gland. Their ultrastructure highly resembles that of the mammalian megakaryocytes. Methods: Morphological, protein expressional, and functional features of blood cells were revealed using epifluorescence and confocal microscopy. The respective hemocyte subpopulations were identified using monoclonal antibodies in indirect immunofluorescence assays. Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled Escherichia coli bacteria were used in phagocytosis tests. Gene expression analysis was performed following mRNA sequencing of blood cells. Results: D. ananassae and Z. indianus encapsulate foreign particles with the involvement of multinucleated giant hemocytes and mount a highly efficient immune response against parasitoid wasps. Morphological, protein expressional, and functional assays of Z. indianus blood cells suggested that these cells could be derived from large plasmatocytes, a unique cell type developing specifically after parasitoid wasp infection. Transcriptomic analysis of blood cells, isolated from naïve and wasp-infected Z. indianus larvae, revealed several differentially expressed genes involved in signal transduction, cell movements, encapsulation of foreign targets, energy production, and melanization, suggesting their role in the anti-parasitoid response. 21. Kacyński’s Poland and Orbán’s Hungary: Different Forms of Autocracy with Common Right-Wing Frames in the EU

Abstract: This paper discusses the regimes of Jarosław Kaczyński in Poland (2015–) and Viktor Orbán in Hungary (2010–) from the perspective of a curious paradox: they are very different in functioning but adhere to right-wing ideological frames that are very similar. First, we argue for a dual-level approach to understanding the formal and informal nature of these regimes, and we identify Poland as a conservative autocratic attempt and Hungary as an established patronal autocracy. After a comparative analysis of the two systems, we analyze the regimes’ common ideological frames and explain how legitimacy panels fit the purposes of an ideology-driven regime (Poland) and an ideology-applying one (Hungary). Finally, the analysis is used to explain the divergent responses of the Polish and the Hungarian regimes to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, which also brought the mutual relations of the two de-democratizing countries in the European Union to a breaking point.

Abstract: Toxin cargo genes are often horizontally transferred by phages between bacterial species and are known to play an important role in the evolution of bacterial pathogenesis. Here, we show how these same genes have been horizontally transferred from phage or bacteria to animals and have resulted in novel adaptations. We discovered that two widespread bacterial genes encoding toxins of animal cells, cytolethal distending toxin subunit B (cdtB) and apoptosis-inducing protein of 56 kDa (aip56), were captured by insect genomes through horizontal gene transfer from bacteria or phages. To study the function of these genes in insects, we focused on Drosophila ananassae as a model. In the D. ananassae subgroup species, cdtB and aip56 are present as singular (cdtB) or fused copies (cdtB::aip56) on the second chromosome. We found that cdtB and aip56 genes and encoded proteins were expressed by immune cells, some proteins were localized to the wasp embryo's serosa, and their expression increased following parasitoid wasp infection. Species of the ananassae subgroup are highly resistant to parasitoid wasps, and we observed that D. ananassae lines carrying null mutations in cdtB and aip56 toxin genes were more susceptible to parasitoids than the wild type. We conclude that toxin cargo genes were captured by these insects millions of years ago and integrated as novel modules into their innate immune system. These modules now represent components of a heretofore undescribed defense response and are important for resistance to parasitoid wasps. Phage or bacterially derived eukaryotic toxin genes serve as macromutations that can spur the instantaneous evolution of novelty in animals.

Abstract: Plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is a noninvasive biomarker for cell death of all organs. Deciphering the tissue origin of cfDNA can reveal abnormal cell death because of diseases, which has great clinical potential in disease detection and monitoring. Despite the great promise, the sensitive and accurate quantification of tissue-derived cfDNA remains challenging to existing methods due to the limited characterization of tissue methylation and the reliance on unsupervised methods. To fully exploit the clinical potential of tissue-derived cfDNA, here we present one of the largest comprehensive and high-resolution methylation atlas based on 521 noncancer tissue samples spanning 29 major types of human tissues. We systematically identified fragment-level tissue-specific methylation patterns and extensively validated them in orthogonal datasets. Based on the rich tissue methylation atlas, we develop the first supervised tissue deconvolution approach, a deep-learning-powered model, cfSort, for sensitive and accurate tissue deconvolution in cfDNA. On the benchmarking data, cfSort showed superior sensitivity and accuracy compared to the existing methods. We further demonstrated the clinical utilities of cfSort with two potential applications: aiding disease diagnosis and monitoring treatment side effects. The tissue-derived cfDNA fraction estimated from cfSort reflected the clinical outcomes of the patients. In summary, the tissue methylation atlas and cfSort enhanced the performance of tissue deconvolution in cfDNA, thus facilitating cfDNA-based disease detection and longitudinal treatment monitoring.

Abstract: The relation between religiosity and well-being is one of the most researched topics in the psychology of religion, yet the directionality and robustness of the effect remains debated. Here, we adopted a many-analysts approach to assess the robustness of this relation based on a new cross-cultural dataset (N = 10, 535 participants from 24 countries). We recruited 120 analysis teams to investigate (1) whether religious people self-report higher well-being, and (2) whether the relation between religiosity and self-reported well-being depends on perceived cultural norms of religion (i.e., whether it is considered normal and desirable to be religious in a given country). In a two-stage procedure, the teams first created an analysis plan and then executed their planned analysis on the data. For the first research question, all but 3 teams reported positive effect sizes with credible/confidence intervals excluding zero (median reported beta = 0.120). For the second research question, this was the case for 65% of the teams (median reported beta = 0.039). While most teams applied (multilevel) linear regression models, there was considerable variability in the choice of items used to construct the independent variables, the dependent variable, and the included covariates.

25. Active tectonics of the Circum-Pannonian region in the light of updated GNSS network data

Abstract: The Pannonian basin is an extensional back-arc basin that has undergone neotectonic inversion and is currently shortening. The understanding and quantification of present-day deformation processes during this inversion are still incomplete. To this end, we investigate the active deformation of the Circum-Pannonian region via the interpolation of GNSS-derived velocity field and the derivation of the strain rate fields. For the interpolation of the velocity field, we use ordinary kriging, a strochastic interpolation method. Our results show that estimating a strain rate field that is virtually free of short-wavelength noise requires the scaling of the velocity uncertainties, i.e. assuming a minimum standard deviation of 1 mm/yr in our case. The deformation of the Circum-Pannonian region is defined by the 2–3 mm/yr, NNE-directed motion of the Dinarides, and by the 0.5–1.5 mm/yr, WSW to SSW directed motion of the eastern areas (European foreland, East Carpathians, South Carpathians, Transylvanian basin). These opposite-sense motions define a large-scale, on average NE-SW shortening and transpression-type deformation in the Dinarides as well as in the Pannonian basin, while the East and South Carpathians undergo regional N–S extension. Neotectonic structures generally show good agreement with the strain rate field, for example in the Dinarides, Eastern Alps, or in the western Pannonian basin. However, the presence of fault-parallel shortening or biaxial shortening along sinistral neotectonic structures in the central and eastern Pannonian basin show some discrepancy between current geodetic and observed neotectonic deformation. The vertical velocity field shows dominantly 100 and 1000 km wavelength signals, the former is probably related to the response of the Pannonian lithosphere-asthenosphere system to neotectonic basin inversion, while latter can possibly be explained by far-field subsidence patterns induced by the mantle response to melting of the Fennoscandian ice, Applied Sciences

Abstract: Ongoing and future climate change driven expansion of aeroallergen-producing plant species comprise a major human health problem across Europe and elsewhere. There is an urgent need to produce accurate, temporally dynamic maps at the continental level, especially in the context of climate uncertainty. This study aimed to restore missing daily ragweed pollen data sets for Europe, to produce phenological maps of ragweed pollen, resulting in the most complete and detailed high-resolution ragweed pollen concentration maps to date. To achieve this, we have developed two statistical procedures, a Gaussian method (GM) and deep learning (DL) for restoring missing daily ragweed pollen data sets, based on the plant's reproductive and growth (phenological, pollen production and frost-related) characteristics. DL model performances were consistently better for estimating seasonal pollen integrals than those of the GM approach. These are the first published modelled maps using altitude correction and flowering phenology to recover missing pollen information. We created a web page (http://euragweedpollen.gmf.u-szeged.hu/), including daily ragweed pollen concentration data sets of the stations examined and their restored daily data, allowing one to upload newly measured or recovered daily data. Generation of these maps provides a means to track pollen impacts in the context of climatic shifts, identify geographical regions with high pollen exposure, determine areas of future vulnerability, apply spatially-explicit mitigation measures and prioritize management interventions.

Abstract: The Global Consortium for the Classification of Fungi and fungus-like taxa is an international initiative of more than 550 mycologists to develop an electronic structure for the classification of these organisms. The members of the Consortium originate from 55 countries/regions worldwide, from a wide range of disciplines, and include senior, mid-career and early-career mycologists and plant pathologists. The Consortium will publish a biannual update of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa, to act as an international scheme for other scientists. Notes on all newly published taxa at or above the level of species will be prepared and published online on the Outline of Fungi website (https://www.outlineoffungi.org/), and these will be finally published in the biannual edition of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa. Comments on recent important taxonomic opinions on controversial topics will be included in the biannual outline. For example, ‘to promote a more stable taxonomy in Fusarium given the divergences over its generic delimitation’, or ‘are there too many genera in the Boletales?’ and even more importantly, ‘what should be done with the tremendously diverse ‘dark fungal taxa?’ There are undeniable differences in mycologists’ perceptions and opinions regarding species classification as well as the establishment of new species. Given the pluralistic nature of fungal taxonomy and its implications for species concepts and the nature of species, this consortium aims to provide a platform to better refine and stabilise fungal classification, taking into consideration views from different parties. In the future, a confidential voting system will be set up to gauge the opinions of all mycologists in the Consortium on important topics. The results of such surveys will be presented to the International Commission on the Taxonomy of Fungi (ICTF) and the Nomenclature Committee for Fungi (NCF) with opinions and percentages of votes for and against. 28. Taxonomic revision of the Lake Pannon cockle subgenus Lymnocardium (Budmania) BRUSINA, 1897

Abstract: The lymnocardiine subgenus Budmania is characterized by the most unusual and spectacular morphology in the endemic mollusc fauna of the Late Miocene – Pliocene Lake Pannon. Budmania possessed extremely high, hollow, irregular keels on its ribs, a pattern that was long considered an adaptation to the fluid, muddy substratum. Eight species were described with this pattern between 1874 and 1973. Our revision, based on the type materials and a large number of additional specimens from several collections, revealed however, that only two species can be distinguished with certainty: Lymnocardium (Budmania) ferrugineum (BRUSINA, 1874) and L. (B.) cristagalli (ROTH, 1878). The former lived in the littoral zone of Lake Pannon, on a sandy substratum, whereas the latter inhabited the sublittoral zone with a muddy bottom. This habitat partitioning challenges the interpretation of the high, hollow keels as an adaptation to a soft, muddy substratum. The occurrence of both species seems to have been restricted to the period between 7.5-7.15 Ma.

Abstract: One of the biggest environmental problems of our time is the increase in illegal landfills in forests, rivers, on river banks and other secluded places. In addition, waste in rivers causes damage not only locally, but also downstream, both in the water and washed ashore. Large islands of waste can also form at hydroelectric power stations and dams, and if they continue to flow, they can cause further damage to the natural environment along the river. Recent studies have also proved that rivers are the main source of plastic pollution in marine environments. Monitoring potential sources of danger is therefore highly important for effective waste collection for related organizations. In our research we analyze two possible forms of waste detection: identification of hot-spots (i.e. illegal waste dumps) and identification of water-surface river blockages. We used medium to high-resolution multispectral satellite imagery as our data source, especially focusing on the Tisza river as our study area. Abstract: Lv17/WB/Rie1-Δ24 was produced via illegitimate recombination mediated by low-dilution serial passage in the Cos7 cell line and isolated on PAM cell culture. The virus contains a huge ~26.4 Kb deletion in the left end of its genome. Lv17/WB/Rie1-ΔCD-ΔGL was generated via homologous recombination, crossing two ASFV strains (Lv17/WB/Rie1-ΔCD and Lv17/WB/Rie1-ΔGL containing eGFP and mCherry markers) during PAM co-infection. The presence of unique parental markers in the Lv17/WB/Rie1-ΔCD-ΔGL genome indicates at least two recombination events during the crossing, suggesting that homologous recombination is a relatively frequent event in the ASFV genome during replication in PAM. Pigs infected with Lv17/WB/Rie1-Δ24 and Lv17/WB/Rie1/ΔCD-ΔGL strains have shown mild clinical signs despite that ASFV could not be detected in their sera until a challenge infection with the Armenia/07 ASFV strain. The two viruses were not able to induce protective immunity in pigs against a virulent Armenia/07 challenge.

Abstract: The Global Consortium for the Classification of Fungi and fungus-like taxa is an international initiative of more than 550 mycologists to develop an electronic structure for the classification of these organisms. The members of the Consortium originate from 55 countries/regions worldwide, from a wide range of disciplines, and include senior, mid-career and early-career mycologists and plant pathologists. The Consortium will publish a biannual update of the Outline of Fungi and funguslike taxa, to act as an international scheme for other scientists. Notes on all newly published taxa at or above the level of species will be prepared and published online on the Outline of Fungi website (https://www.outlineoffungi.org/), and these will be finally published in the biannual edition of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa. Comments on recent important taxonomic opinions on controversial topics will be included in the biannual outline. For example, ‘to promote a more stable taxonomy in Fusarium given the divergences over its generic delimitation’, or ‘are there too many genera in the Boletales?’ and even more importantly, ‘what should be done with the tremendously diverse ‘dark fungal taxa?’ There are undeniable differences in mycologists’ perceptions and opinions regarding species classification as well as the establishment of new species. Given the pluralistic nature of fungal taxonomy and its implications for species concepts and the nature of species, this consortium aims to provide a platform to better refine and stabilise fungal classification, taking into consideration views from different parties. In the future, a confidential voting system will be set up to gauge the opinions of all mycologists in the Consortium on important topics. Abstract: The nonlinear evolution of Alfv\'en waves in the solar corona leads to the generation of Alfv\'enic turbulence. This description of the Alfv\'en waves involves parametric instabilities where the parent wave decays into slow mode waves giving rise to density fluctuations. These density fluctuations, in turn, play a crucial role in the modulation of the dynamic spectrum of type III radio bursts, which are observed at the fundamental of local plasma frequency and are sensitive to the local density. During observations of such radio bursts, fine structures are detected across different temporal ranges. In this study, we examine density fluctuations generated through the parametric decay instability (PDI) of Alfv\'en waves as a mechanism to generate striations in the dynamic spectrum of type III radio bursts using magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the solar corona. An Alfv\'en wave is injected into the quiet solar wind by perturbing the transverse magnetic field and velocity components which subsequently undergo the PDI instability. The type III burst is modelled as a fast-moving radiation source that samples the background solar wind as it propagates to emit radio waves. Abstract: Interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) are defined as ''coherent'' if they are capable of responding to external perturbations in a collective manner. This implies that information must be able to propagate across ICME structures, and if this is not the case, single-point in-situ measurements cannot be considered as indicative of global ICME properties. Here, we investigate the role of Alfvenic fluctuations (AFs) as mediators of ICME coherence. We consider multi-point magnetic field and plasma measurements of 10 ICMEs observed by the ACE and Wind spacecraft at 1 au at longitudinal separations of 0.5{\deg}-0.7{\deg}. For each event, we analyze the Alfvenicity in terms of the residual energy and cross helicity of fluctuations, and the coherence in terms of the magnetic correlation between Wind and ACE. We find that ~65% and 90% of ICME sheaths and magnetic ejecta (MEs), respectively, present extended AFs covering at least 20% of the structure. Cross helicity suggests AFs of solar and interplanetary origin may co-exist in the ICME population at 1 au. AFs are mainly concentrated downstream of shocks and in the back of MEs. The magnetic field is poorly correlated within sheaths, while the correlation decreases from the front to the back of the MEs for most magnetic field components. AFs are also associated with lower magnetic field correlations. This suggests either that ICME coherence is not mediated by Alfven waves, implying that the coherence scale may be smaller than previously predicted, or that the magnetic field correlation is not a measure of coherence.

Abstract: The effects of tree pollen on precipitation chemistry are not fully understood and this can lead to misinterpretations of element deposition in European forests. We investigated the relationship between forest throughfall (TF) element fluxes and the Seasonal Pollen Integral (SPIn) using linear mixed-effects modelling (LME). TF was measured in 1990–2018 during the main pollen season (MPS, arbitrary two months) in 61 managed, mostly pure, even-aged Fagus, Quercus, Pinus, and Picea stands which are part of the ICP Forests Level II network. The SPIn for the dominant tree genus was observed at 56 aerobiological monitoring stations in nearby cities. The net contribution of pollen was estimated as the TF flux in the MPS minus the fluxes in the preceding and succeeding months. In stands of Fagus and Picea, two genera that do not form large amounts of flowers every year, TF fluxes of potassium (K+), ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) showed a positive relationship with SPIn. However- for Fagus- a negative relationship was found between TF nitrate-nitrogen (NO3−-N) fluxes and SPIn. For Quercus and Pinus, two genera producing many flowers each year, SPIn displayed limited variability and no clear association with TF element fluxes. Overall, pollen contributed on average 4.1–10.6% of the annual TF fluxes of K+ > DOC > DON > NH4+-N with the highest contribution in Quercus > Fagus > Pinus > Picea stands. Tree pollen appears to affect TF inorganic nitrogen fluxes both qualitatively and quantitatively, acting as a source of NH4+-N and a sink of NO3−-N. Pollen appears to play a more complex role in nutrient cycling than previously thought.

Abstract: The Global Consortium for the Classification of Fungi and fungus-like taxa is an international initiative of more than 550 mycologists to develop an electronic structure for the classification of these organisms. The members of the Consortium originate from 55 countries/regions worldwide, from a wide range of disciplines, and include senior, mid-career and early-career mycologists and plant pathologists. The Consortium will publish a biannual update of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa, to act as an international scheme for other scientists. Notes on all newly published taxa at or above the level of species will be prepared and published online on the Outline of Fungi website (https://www.outlineoffungi.org/), and these will be finally published in the biannual edition of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa. Comments on recent important taxonomic opinions on controversial topics will be included in the biannual outline. For example, 'to promote a more stable taxonomy in Fusarium given the divergences over its generic delimitation', or 'are there too many genera in the Boletales?' and even more importantly, 'what should be done with the tremendously diverse 'dark fungal taxa?' There are undeniable differences in mycologists' perceptions and opinions regarding species classification as well as the establishment of new species. Given the pluralistic nature of fungal taxonomy and its implications for species concepts and the nature of species, this consortium aims to provide a platform to better refine and stabilise fungal classification, taking into consideration views from different parties. In the future, a confidential voting system will be set up to gauge the opinions of all mycologists in the Consortium on important topics. Abstract: Hydrothermal vents have been key to our understanding of the limits of life, and the metabolic and phylogenetic diversity of thermophilic organisms. Here we used environmental metagenomics combined with analysis of physicochemical data and 16S rRNA gene amplicons to characterize the sediment-hosted microorganisms at the recently discovered Auka vents in the Gulf of California. We recovered 325 metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs) representing 54 phyla, over 30% of those currently known, showing the microbial community in Auka hydrothermal sediments is highly diverse. 16S rRNA gene amplicon screening of 224 sediment samples across the vent field indicates that the MAGs retrieved from a single site are representative of the microbial community in the vent field sediments. Metabolic reconstruction of a vent-specific, deeply branching clade within the Desulfobacterota suggests these organisms metabolize sulfur using novel octaheme cytochrome-c proteins related to hydroxylamine oxidoreductase. Community-wide comparison between Auka MAGs and MAGs from Guaymas Basin revealed a remarkable 20% species-level overlap, suggestive of long-distance species transfer over 400 km and subsequent sediment colonization. Optimal growth temperature prediction on the Auka MAGs, and thousands of reference genomes, shows that thermophily is a trait that has evolved frequently. Taken together, our Auka vent field results offer new perspectives on our understanding of hydrothermal vent microbiology.

Abstract: Biogeochemical cycling of sulfur is relatively understudied in terrestrial environments compared to marine environments. However, the comparative ease of access, observation, and sampling of terrestrial settings can expand our understanding of organisms and processes important in the modern sulfur cycle. Furthermore, these sites may allow for the discovery of useful process analogs for ancient sulfur-metabolizing microbial communities at times in Earth's past when atmospheric O2 concentrations were lower and sulfide was more prevalent in Earth surface environments. We identified a new site at Santa Paula Creek (SPC) in Ventura County, CA—a remarkable freshwater, gravel-bedded mountain stream charged with a range of oxidized and reduced sulfur species and heavy hydrocarbons from the emergence of subsurface fluids within the underlying sulfur- and organic-rich Miocene-age Monterey Formation. SPC hosts a suite of morphologically distinct microbial biofacies that form in association with the naturally occurring hydrocarbon seeps and sulfur springs. We characterized the geology, stream geochemistry, and microbial facies and diversity of the Santa Paula Creek ecosystem. Using geochemical analyses and 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we found that SPC supports a dynamic sulfur cycle that is largely driven by sulfide-oxidizing microbial taxa, with contributions from smaller populations of sulfate-reducing and sulfur-disproportionating taxa. This preliminary characterization of SPC revealed an intriguing site in which to study geological and geochemical controls on microbial community composition and to expand our understanding of sulfur cycling in terrestrial environments.

Abstract: Multinucleated giant hemocytes (MGHs) represent a novel type of blood cell in insects that participate in a highly efficient immune response against parasitoid wasps involving isolation and killing of the parasite. Previously, we showed that circulating MGHs have high motility and the interaction with the parasitoid rapidly triggers encapsulation. However, structural and molecular mechanisms behind these processes remained elusive. Here, we used detailed ultrastructural analysis and live cell imaging of MGHs to study encapsulation in Drosophila ananassae after parasitoid wasp infection. We found dynamic structural changes, mainly driven by the formation of diverse vesicular systems and newly developed complex intracytoplasmic membrane structures, and abundant generation of giant cell exosomes in MGHs. In addition, we used RNA sequencing to study the transcriptomic profile of MGHs and activated plasmatocytes 72 h after infection, as well as the uninduced blood cells. This revealed that differentiation of MGHs was accompanied by broad changes in gene expression. Consistent with the observed structural changes, transcripts related to vesicular function, cytoskeletal organization, and adhesion were enriched in MGHs. In addition, several orphan genes encoding for hemolysin-like proteins, pore-forming toxins of prokaryotic origin, were expressed at high level, which may be important for parasitoid elimination. Our results reveal coordinated molecular and structural changes in the course of MGH differentiation and parasitoid encapsulation, providing a mechanistic model for a powerful innate immune response.

40. RGS14 regulates PTH- and FGF23-sensitive NPT2A-mediated renal phosphate uptake via binding to the NHERF1 scaffolding protein.

Abstract: Phosphate homeostasis, mediated by dietary intake, renal absorption, and bone deposition, is incompletely understood because of the uncharacterized roles of numerous implicated protein factors. Here, we identified a novel role for one such element, regulator of G protein signaling 14 (RGS14), suggested by genome-wide association studies to associate with dysregulated Pi levels. We show that human RGS14 possesses a carboxy-terminal PDZ ligand required for sodium phosphate cotransporter 2a (NPT2A) and sodium hydrogen exchanger regulatory factor-1 (NHERF1)-mediated renal Pi transport. In addition, we found using isotope uptake measurements combined with bioluminescence resonance energy transfer assays, siRNA knockdown, pull-down and overlay assays, and molecular modeling that secreted proteins parathyroid hormone (PTH) and fibroblast growth factor 23 inhibited Pi uptake by inducing dissociation of the NPT2A-NHERF1 complex. PTH failed to affect Pi transport in cells expressing RGS14, suggesting that it suppresses hormone-sensitive but not basal Pi uptake. Interestingly, RGS14 did not affect PTH-directed G protein activation or cAMP formation, implying a postreceptor site of action. Further pull-down experiments and direct binding assays indicated that NPT2A and RGS14 bind distinct PDZ domains on NHERF1. We showed that RGS14 expression in human renal proximal tubule epithelial cells blocked the effects of PTH and fibroblast growth factor 23 and stabilized the NPT2A-NHERF1 complex. In contrast, RGS14 genetic variants bearing mutations in the PDZ ligand disrupted RGS14 binding to NHERF1 and subsequent PTH-sensitive Pi transport. In conclusion, these findings identify RGS14 as a novel regulator of hormone-sensitive Pi transport. The results suggest that changes in RGS14 function or abundance may contribute to the hormone resistance and hyperphosphatemia observed in kidney diseases.

Abstract: We present Golden Gate, an FPGA-based simulation tool that decouples the timing of an FPGA host platform from that of the target RTL design. In contrast to previous work in static time-multiplexing of FPGA resources, Golden Gate employs the Latency-Insensitive Bounded Dataflow Network (LI-BDN) formalism to decompose the simulator into subcomponents, each of which may be independently and automatically optimized. This structure allows Golden Gate to support a broad class of optimizations that improve resource utilization by implementing FPGA-hostile structures over multiple cycles, while the LI-BDN formalism ensures that the simulator still produces bit- and cycle-exact results. To verify that these optimizations are implemented correctly, we also present LIME, a model-checking tool that provides a push-button flow for checking whether optimized subcomponents adhere to an associated correctness specification, while also guaranteeing forward progress. Finally, we use Golden Gate to generate a cycle-exact simulator of a multi-core SoC, where we reduce LUT utilization by up to 26% by coercing multi-ported, combinationally read memories into simulation models backed by time-multiplexed block RAMs, enabling us to simulate 50% more cores on a single FPGA.

42. Evolutionary Diversification of Methanotrophic Ca. Methanophagales (ANME-1) and Their Expansive Virome

Abstract: ‘Candidatus Methanophagales’ (ANME-1) is a major order-level clade of archaea responsible for methane removal in deep-sea sediments through anaerobic oxidation of methane. Yet the extent of their diversity and factors which drive their dynamics and evolution remain poorly understood. Here, by sampling hydrothermal rocks and sediments, we expand their phylogenetic diversity and characterize a new deep-branching, thermophilic ANME-1 family, ‘Candidatus Methanoxibalbaceae’ (ANME-1c). They are phylogenetically closest to the short-chain-alkane oxidizers ‘Candidatus Syntrophoarchaeales’ and ‘Candidatus Alkanophagales’, and encode ancestral features including a methyl coenzyme M reductase chaperone McrD and a hydrogenase complex. Global phylogeny and near-complete genomes clarified that the debated hydrogen metabolism within ANME-1 is an ancient trait that was vertically inherited but differentially lost during lineage diversification. Our expanded genomic and metagenomic sampling allowed the discovery of viruses constituting 3 new orders and 16 new families that so far are exclusive to ANME-1 hosts. These viruses represent 4 major archaeal virus assemblages, characterized by tailless icosahedral, head-tailed, rod-shaped, and spindle-shaped virions, but display unique structural and replicative signatures. Exemplified by the analyses of thymidylate synthases that unveiled a virus-mediated ancestral process of host gene displacement, this expansive ANME-1 virome carries a large gene repertoire that can influence their hosts across different timescales. Our study thus puts forth an emerging evolutionary continuum between anaerobic methane and short-chain-alkane oxidizers and opens doors for exploring the impacts of viruses on the dynamics and evolution of the anaerobic methane-driven ecosystems.

Abstract: Early cancer detection by cell-free DNA faces multiple challenges: low fraction of tumor cell-free DNA, molecular heterogeneity of cancer, and sample sizes that are not sufficient to reflect diverse patient populations. Here, we develop a cancer detection approach to address these challenges. It consists of an assay, cfMethyl-Seq, for cost-effective sequencing of the cell-free DNA methylome (with > 12-fold enrichment over whole genome bisulfite sequencing in CpG islands), and a computational method to extract methylation information and diagnose patients. Applying our approach to 408 colon, liver, lung, and stomach cancer patients and controls, at 97.9% specificity we achieve 80.7% and 74.5% sensitivity in detecting all-stage and early-stage cancer, and 89.1% and 85.0% accuracy for locating tissue-of-origin of all-stage and early-stage cancer, respectively. Our approach cost-effectively retains methylome profiles of cancer abnormalities, allowing us to learn new features and expand to other cancer types as training cohorts grow.

Abstract: The relation between religiosity and well-being is one of the most researched topics in the psychology of religion, yet the directionality and robustness of the effect remains debated. Here, we adopted a many-analysts approach to assess the robustness of this relation based on a new cross-cultural dataset (N = 10, 535 participants from 24 countries). We recruited 120 analysis teams to investigate (1) whether religious people self-report higher well-being, and (2) whether the relation between religiosity and self-reported well-being depends on perceived cultural norms of religion (i.e., whether it is considered normal and desirable to be religious in a given country). In a two-stage procedure, the teams first created an analysis plan and then executed their planned analysis on the data. For the first research question, all but 3 teams reported positive effect sizes with credible/confidence intervals excluding zero (median reported beta = 0.120). For the second research question, this was the case for 65% of the teams (median reported beta = 0.039). While most teams applied (multilevel) linear regression models, there was considerable variability in the choice of items used to construct the independent variables, the dependent variable, and the included covariates.

45. Phase mixing and the 1/f spectrum in the solar wind

Abstract: The origin and evolution of the 1/f power law observed in the energy spectrum of solar coronal and solar wind fluctuations at scales of around an hour is not entirely understood. Several existing theories aim at explaining it, involving both linear and nonlinear mechanisms. An often overlooked property of the solar corona and solar wind is their highly inhomogeneous nature. In this paper we investigate the linear evolution of pure Alfv\'en and surface Alfv\'en waves propagating through a plasma which is inhomogeneous across the magnetic field. The inhomogeneity is given by density, which we model to be two-dimensional colored noise, with power spectral slopes ranging from -2 to -1. Alfv\'en waves propagate independently on individual magnetic field lines, and eventually get completely out of phase through the process of phase mixing, leading to unrealistic spectra. When the coupling between the inhomogeneous background and the propagating waves is fully accounted for, transverse waves such as surface Alfv\'en waves (also referred to as kink or Alfv\'enic) appear, showing collective wave behavior of neighboring magnetic field lines with different Alfv\'en speeds. We show that the linear cascade of surface Alfv\'en wave energy, induced by phase mixing and resonant absorption, leads to a perpendicular wave energy spectrum which tends to the perpendicular power spectrum of the background density. Based on our model, we propose that a perpendicular density power spectrum of 1/f in the solar corona can induce, through linear processes, the 1/f spectrum of the fluctuations that is observed at the largest scales., Comment: Accepted in ApJ

46. High frequency decayless waves with significant energy in Solar Orbiter/EUI observations

Abstract: High-frequency wave phenomena present a great deal of interest as one of the possible candidates to contribute to the energy input required to heat the corona as a part of the AC heating theory. However, the resolution of imaging instruments up until the Solar Orbiter have made it impossible to resolve the necessary time and spatial scales. The present paper reports on high-frequency transverse motions in a small loop located in a quiet Sun region of the corona. The oscillations were observed with the HRIEUV telescope (17.4 nm) of the EUI instrument onboard the Solar Orbiter. We detect two transverse oscillations in short loops with lengths of 4.5 Mm and 11 Mm. The shorter loop displays an oscillation with a 14 s period and the longer a 30 s period. Despite the high resolution, no definitive identification as propagating or standing waves is possible. The velocity amplitudes are found to be equal to 72 km/s and 125 km/s, respectively, for the shorter and longer loop. Based on that, we also estimated the values of the energy flux contained in the loops - the energy flux of the 14 s oscillation is 1.9 kW m^-2 and of the 30 s oscillation it is 6.5 kW m^-2 . While these oscillations have been observed in the Quiet Sun, their energy fluxes are of the same order as the energy input required to heat the active solar corona. Numerical simulations were performed in order to reproduce the observed oscillations. The correspondence of the numerical results to the observations provide support to the energy content estimates for the observations. 47. Saliency Map Based Data Augmentation

Abstract: Data augmentation is a commonly applied technique with two seemingly related advantages. With this method one can increase the size of the training set generating new samples and also increase the invariance of the network against the applied transformations. Unfortunately all images contain both relevant and irrelevant features for classification therefore this invariance has to be class specific. In this paper we will present a new method which uses saliency maps to restrict the invariance of neural networks to certain regions, providing higher test accuracy in classification tasks.

48. Partizipation und Wohlbefinden in der frühen Kindheit : eine qualitative Studie mit Kindern im Alter von 0 bis 6 Jahren im Kanton Fribourg : Schlussbericht

Abstract: Vorliegender Schlussbericht dokumentiert und reflektiert Erkenntnisse der zwischen August 2020 und Mai 2021 durchgeführten, vom Jugendamt des Kantons Freiburg, Fachstelle für Kinder und Jugendförderung, in Auftrag gegebenen und von der Direktion für Gesundheit und Soziales finanzierten Studie mit Kindern im Alter von 2-5 Jahren über ihr subjektives Wohlbefinden und ihre Möglichkeiten zu Partizipation. In diesem Zeitraum wurde die Studie konzeptionalisiert, ein Leitfaden entwickelt, der Feldzugang erarbeitet, die Interviews durchgeführt und ausgewertet. Als Orientierung für die Erstellung des Leitfadens wurde jener des transnationalen und transdisziplinären Forschungsnetzwerkes «Children’s Understandings of Well-being», welche Interviews mit Kindern ab 8 Jahren vorsieht, verwendet und in Bezugnahme auf entwicklungspsychologische, sprachtheoretische sowie methodisch-methodologische Erkenntnisse für den Bereich der frühen Kindheit differenziert angepasst und wesentlich erweitert. Die spielerische Gestaltung der Interviews sowie die Bereitstellung verschiedener Gesprächsanlässe durch Bilder, Zeichnungen, Büchlein mit Geschichten oder durch von Kindern mitgebrachte Gegenstände erlaubten zahlreiche Möglichkeiten, um Erzählungen seitens der Kinder anzuregen und bei ihren Relevanzen anzusetzen. Aufgrund der Gespräche konnten wesentliche Erkenntnisse zu der Frage rekonstruiert werden, wie es Kindern geht, was ihnen aus ihrer Sicht wichtig für ihr Wohlbefinden sei und wie sie ihre Partizipationsmöglichkeiten sehen. Mehrere Kinder schienen sehr froh über das Interesse und über die Möglichkeit zu sein, Zeit mit jemandem – auch wenn für sie Fremden – verbringen zu können. Diese Freude äusserte sich zum einen in dem Wunsch, der Interviewerin möglichst viel von ihrem Zimmer und Spielzeug zeigen zu können; zum anderen in ihrer Neugierde und Entdeckungslust darüber, was die Interviewerin an Materialien mitgebracht habe. Abstract: We present Golden Gate, an FPGA-based simulation tool that decouples the timing of an FPGA host platform from that of the target RTL design. In contrast to previous work in static time-multiplexing of FPGA resources, Golden Gate employs the Latency-Insensitive Bounded Dataflow Network (LI-BDN) formalism to decompose the simulator into subcomponents, each of which may be independently and automatically optimized. This structure allows Golden Gate to support a broad class of optimizations that improve resource utilization by implementing FPGA-hostile structures over multiple cycles, while the LI-BDN formalism ensures that the simulator still produces bit-and cycle-exact results. To verify that these optimizations are implemented correctly, we also present LIME, a model-checking tool that provides a push-button flow for checking whether optimized subcomponents adhere to an associated correctness specification, while also guaranteeing forward progress. Finally, we use Golden Gate to generate a cycle-exact simulator of a multi-core SoC, where we reduce LUT utilization by up to 26% by coercing multi-ported, combinationally read memories into simulation models backed by time-multiplexed block RAMs, enabling us to simulate 50% more cores on a single FPGA.
