Abstract

V618 Sgr was previously classified as an R CrB-type variable and later as a possible symbiotic star. Our study aims to analyse the nature of this target, which is currently undergoing significant brightening in properties similar to those of known symbiotic novae. We analyse literature information, photometric observations, and 35 new optical spectra. Our findings strongly suggest that V618 Sgr is an eclipsing symbiotic nova currently in outburst. Additionally, since the star has demonstrated at least two similar brightenings in the past, we propose that V618 Sgr could be the first known galactic symbiotic nova observed in repeated outbursts of this type and may host a relatively massive white dwarf., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, 1 table; accepted in MNRAS

Abstract

Environmental exposure effects on human development can be small and difficult to detect due to the nature of observational data. In the Seychelles Child Development Study, researchers examined the effect of prenatal methylmercury ex- posure using a battery of tests measuring aspects of child development [18, 20]. We build a multiple outcomes model similar to that of the previous analyses (see [18, 20]); however, our multiple outcomes model makes no assumptions of relation- ships between the testing outcomes. Instead, the nesting of outcomes into domains is a clustering problem we address with a Dirichlet process mixture model imple- mented through a Bayesian MCMC approach [12]. This model provides inference for the methylmercury exposure effect as well as greater insight into the similarities and differences across the outcomes.

4. A youth curfew: A retrospective view of the rise, fall and legacy of the Northbridge Policy

Abstract

This article presents policy, practice and theory implications of a case study of a youth curfew. The original case study of the Northbridge Policy Project set out to document the purposes of the Northbridge Policy, how policy was implemented, and to evaluate the effectiveness of this approach as a generalised response to child welfare and youth crime. The study synthesised data from multiple sources. The original study concluded that although the project was well resourced, well managed and had improved greatly inter-agency collaboration for child protection, these benefits could have been achieved without the curfew, which undermined some preventative aspects of the project. The evaluation also concluded that previously documented successes of the curfew for crime protection and child protection had been achieved through displacement of young people to other locations that neither reduced crime nor increase safety. After the project was suddenly curtailed, analysis used moral panic theory to examine the legacy of the Northbridge curfew in terms of discourse about young people and legitimation of subsequent practices in youth policing. The analysis found that the legacy had been unhelpful because it reinforced the erroneous beliefs that the curfew had been an effective and necessary component of strategy.

This review inspects some of the evidence associated with CPTED and provides a detailed overview of the main criticisms facing this field.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore how the managers of early adopting Australian firms contribute to the institutionalisation of integrated reporting (IR). Design/methodology/approach – This study is situated within institutional theory. The authors undertook semi-structured interviews with 23 Australian managers. The authors drew on Gabriel's (2000) poetic analytics to show how the sensemaking activities of the early adopters contribute to the institutionalisation process. Findings – Two main narratives dominate our managers’ experience: IR as story-telling and IR as meeting expectations. These two narratives are constructed simultaneously and theyset up contrasting plots regarding salient events, responsibilities and characters that are resolved through one or more of three “inter-narratives” that background these tensions. The inter-narratives suggest time, the company's strategy, and talking and engagement can solve problems. Research limitations/implications – The authors argue that the managers of early adopting firms are important in the institutionalisation process. Even though they may not necessarily be institutional entrepreneurs they do engage in important “institutional work”. The study is limited by its predominant focus on only one participant to the institutionalisation process, and it is may be the case that the institutionalisation of IR is not ultimately successful. Originality/value – Provides in-depth insights into an under-researched participant in an institutional field contributes to institutionalisation. Additionally, it sheds light on the conditions under which firms will engage with IR.

Intermeshed with discourses of race, place and belonging, European ideas of time as linear, Cartesian and chronological function as enduring discursive categories that frame public debate within conceptual legacies from colonialism. There is substantial evidence internationally that modernist and mechanical temporal discourses of progress and efficiency have impeded Indigenous aspirations, including attempts to achieve sovereignty. In this article, we use a critical whiteness studies framework, and a critical discourse analysis methodology, to make visible the temporal assumptions in mainstream news articles from Aotearoa New Zealand. These articles, from influential, agenda-setting media, discuss crucial issues of indigenous rights, including Te Tiriti o Waitangi negotiations. Our analysis shows that they do so within a culturally specific, Western temporal framework, which limits their ability to provide balanced, informative coverage of the issues at stake.

Abstract

Readers of this journal will be well aware of the ambivalence that surrounds philanthropy in discussions of corporate citizenship. This ambivalence raises questions about the state of our knowledge about philanthropy, and the extent to which we fully understand this vexed practice. How much do we really know about the intentions of those giving and the consequences of philanthropy for both the donor and the recipient? To what extent does philanthropy contribute to or detract from the goals of corporate citizenship? While the intentions and motivations of managers are likely to sit somewhere on a continuum with altruism at one end, through varying degrees of reciprocity, to self-interest at the other, much more needs to be understood about the consequences of philanthropy, and how it contributes to community/social development and the work of recipients.

Abstract

In 1959, Sydney-based textile designer Florence Broadhurst, also known as Madame Pellier, emerged on the design scene with a collection of prints inspired by Japanese motifs. Amongst these motifs were Art Nouveau and Art Deco swirls; abstract weaves and traditional tapestry designs, which the Sydney scene then considered revolutionary. With a team of young designers and screen printers at her side, Broadhurst set up a studio in the heart of avant-garde Paddington and began producing her lavish, bold coloured creations. These eclectic prints were featured heavily in wallpaper and interior furnishings and introduced the Australian post-war consumer to her vibrant geometric patterns and valiant colour plans. Eighteen years later, it seemed mysterious then, that Florence Broadhurst would be murdered where no motive was suggested and no perpetrator discovered. In the 90s, David Lennie, salvaged the Broadhurst prints under copyright of his screen-printing company Signature Prints. Since then, though the murder remains unsolved, the revival of Broadhurst s designs as part of Sydney s burgeoning interiors scene has prompted much speculation into the methods she originally adopted in her artistic process.

Abstract

Intuitive interaction involves utilising knowledge gained through other products or experience(s). Therefore, products that people use intuitively are those with features they have encountered before. This position has been supported by experimental studies. The findings suggest that relevant past experience is transferable between products, and probably also between contexts, and performance is affected by a person’s level of familiarity with similar technologies. Appearance (shape, size and labelling of features) seems to be the variable that most affects intuitive uses. Using familiar labels and icons and possibly positions for buttons helps people to use a product quickly and intuitively the first time they encounter it. A set of principles and a conceptual tool have been developed based on the experimental work, with the aim of assisting designers in producing interfaces that are intuitive to use. This paper offers an overview of this work, which has become the basis for an emerging design methodology for intuitive interaction. The principles and tool are explained and an initial trial of the tool is also described and the findings discussed.

Abstract

At a time when attacks on humanity - both human and natural - are so evident in the daily media, it is natural for people to consider how to prevent, or at least try to alleviate, social concerns. Such thought characterises the philanthropic nature. Like many developed countries, social issues besiege the quality of life. Failure of the education system, the lack of appropriate health services and deficient support for families, all present themselves as threats to the collective social well-being. Such issues escalate when government fails to act, forcing the community and voluntary sector to react. Michael Porter and Mark Kramer, co-founders of US-based non-profit organisation FSG, have suggested that Milton Friedman's view that corporations provide no greater benefit to society than is provided by individual donors, is only true when corporate contributions are unfocused. Abstract

At a time when attacks on humanity - both human and natural - are so evident in the daily media, it is natural for people to consider how to prevent, or at least try to alleviate, social concerns. Such thought characterises the philanthropic nature. Like many developed countries, social issues besiege the quality of life. Failure of the education system, the lack of appropriate health services and deficient support for families, all present themselves as threats to the collective social well-being. Such issues escalate when government fails to act, forcing the community and voluntary sector to react. Michael Porter and Mark Kramer, co-founders of US-based non-profit organisation FSG, have suggested that Milton Friedman's view that corporations provide no greater benefit to society than is provided by individual donors, is only true when corporate contributions are unfocused. This, they claim, is because corporations can leverage capabilities and relationships in support of charitable causes, which exceed individual effort.

Abstract

As New Zealand society becomes more diverse and the ethnic make-up of our population changes, people in the workplace now, more than at any other time in our history, need to be aware of differences in values, expectations and practices when communicating across cultures. Most guidelines for effective cross-cultural communication stress the importance of communicators increasing their knowledge about other cultures. For example, Gudykunst (1995), a widely published American communication scholar, believes that following a practice he terms ‘mindfulness’ can significantly improve cross-cultural communication. The ‘three tasks’ of mindfulness include motivation (developing an attitude of willingness to learn about other cultures) and skill (improving techniques such as dialogue and listening). The third task, however, and one that underpins both the others, is increasing knowledge by learning about other cultures through research. This may include formal research programmes to study other cultures, or informal research such as reading books, asking questions and contacting people within other cultures who can act as guides or advisors. This chapter likewise endorses increased knowledge as crucial to cross-cultural understanding and therefore to effective communication. However, in New Zealand, as in other postcolonial societies, the concept of ‘research’ itself needs to be explored in more depth, as research is not always positive to all participants. Important cultural issues may surround even preliminary research steps, such as asking questions and making contact. This chapter draws on the Kaupapa Māori research guidelines proposed by Linda Tuhiwai Smith (1999) and developed by other Māori scholars, to suggest ways in which non-Māori in New Zealand can increase knowledge of the values, practices and communication expectations of our society’s second-largest ethnic group, Māori, and thereby become more sensitive and successful cross-cultural communicators.

Antibodies for military use must possess additional qualities. Abstract

We present analysis of MACHO Alert 95-30, a dramatic gravitational microlensing event towards the Galactic bulge whose peak magnification departs significantly from the standard point-source microlensing model. Alert 95-30 was observed in real-time by the Global Microlensing Alert Network (GMAN), which obtained densely sampled photometric and spectroscopic data throughout the event. We interpret the light-curve ``fine structure'' as indicating transit of the lens across the extended face of the source star. This signifies resolution of a star several kpc distant. We find a lens angular impact parameter theta_{min}/theta_{source} = 0.715 +/- 0.003. This information, along with the radius and distance of the source, provides an additional constraint on the lensing system. Spectroscopic and photometric data indicate the source is an M4 III star of radius 61 +/- 12 Rsun, located on the far side of the bulge at 9 kpc. We derive a lens angular velocity, relative to the source, of 21.5 +/- 4.9 km/s/kpc, where the error is dominated by uncertainty in the source radius. Likelihood analysis yields a median lens mass of 0.67{+2.53}{-0.46} Msun, located with 80% probability in the Galactic bulge at a distance of 6.93{+1.56}{-2.25} kpc. If the lens is a main-sequence star, we can include constraints on the lens luminosity. This modifies our estimates to M_lens = 0.53{+0.52}{-0.35} Msun and D_lens = 6.57{+0.99}{-2.25} kpc. Spectra taken during the event show that the absorption line equivalent widths of H alpha and the TiO bands near 6700 A vary, as predicted for microlensing of an extended source. This is most likely due to center-to-limb variation in the stellar spectral lines. Abstract

This report describes a study of the extinction and scattering of infra-red radiation from an aerosol of fine particles. A description is given of the method developed for generation of a uniform optically thin cloud of particles. Reynolds aluminum 40XD powder was used for this test. The optical equipment including glo-bar source, focusing optics, traversing mechanism and Perkin Elmer model 98 monochromator is described. The extinction coefficient and normalized scattering function is reported for 21 wave lengths of incident radiation. (Author)

Abstract

Proton-recoil spectrometers have frequently been used in the past few years to measure spectra for neutron energies greater than approximately 1 MeV with the results depending strongly on the adequacy of the response matrix used in unfolding pulse-height spectra. By simultaneously measuring a fast-neutron spectrum by time-of-flight and by pulse-height unfolding, the adequacy of the response matrix and unfolding code could be determined. Spectra of several shapes and measurements with different time-of-flight resolution were used to validate the spectra obtained by unfolding the pulse-height spectrum. (Author)

The report describes the results of a study of the extinction and scattering of thermal radiation by optically thin clouds of small particles. The mass extinction coefficient, the angular distribution of scattered radiation and the ratio of scattering to extinction is reported for particles of aluminum, carbon, glass, iron and silica. The particles have average sizes of a few microns. Measurements are made for wave length ranges from 0.7 microns to 15 microns. (Author), See also AD-603 851.
