We present a detailed timing study of the pulse profile of Swift J0243.6+6124 with HXMT and Fermi/GBM data during its 2017 giant outburst. The double-peak profile at luminosity above $5\times10^{38}$erg\,s$^{-1}$ is found to be 0.25 phase offset from that below $1.5\times10^{38}$erg\,s$^{-1}$, which strongly supports for a transition from a pencil beam to a fan beam, and thus for the formation of shock dominated accretion column. During the rising stage of the high double-peak regime, the faint peak got saturated in 10-100 keV band above a luminosity of $L_t\sim1.3\times10^{39}$erg\,s$^{-1}$, which is coincident with sudden spectral changes of both the main and faint peaks. They imply a sudden change of emission pattern around $L_t$. The spin-up rate ($\dot{\nu}$) is linearly correlated with luminosity ($L$) below $L_t$, consistent with the prediction of a radiation pressure dominated (RPD) disk. The $\dot{\nu}-L$ relation flattens above $L_t$, indicating a less efficient transfer of angular momentum and a change of accretion disk geometry above $L_t$. It is likely due to irradiation of the disk by the central accretion column and indicates significant radiation feedback before the inner disk radius reaching the spherization radius., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figs, to appear on MNRAS

MAXI J1816-195 is a newly discovered accreting millisecond pulsar with prolific thermonuclear bursts, detected during its outburst in 2022 June by Insight-HXMT and NICER. During the outburst, Insight-HXMT detected 73 bursts in its peak and decay phase, serving as a prolific burst system found in the accreting millisecond pulsars. By analyzing one burst which was simultaneously detected by Insight-HXMT and NICER, we find a mild deviation from the conventional blackbody model. By stacking the Insight-HXMT lightcurves of 66 bursts which have similar profiles and intensities, a hard X-ray shortage is detected with a significance of 15.7 sigma in 30-100 keV. The shortage is about 30% of the persistent flux, which is low compared with other bursters. The shortage fraction is energy-dependent: larger in a higher energy band. These findings make the newly discovered millisecond MAXI J1816-195 a rather peculiar system compared with other millisecond pulsars and atoll bursters. In addition, based on the brightest burst, we derive an upper limit of the distance as 6.3 kpc, and therefore estimate the upper limit of the inner disc radius of the accretion disc to be~ 40 km. Galaxy mergers and interactions are expected to play a significant role leading to offsets between gas and stellar motions in galaxies. Herein we crossmatch galaxies in MaNGA MPL-8 with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Legacy Surveys and identify 311 merging galaxies that have reliable measurements of the $\Delta$PA, the difference between the stellar and gas kinematic position angles to investigate the impacts of merging on gas-stellar rotation misalignments. We find that the merging fractions of misaligned galaxies (30$^\circ$ $\leqslant$ $\Delta$PA $<$150$^\circ$) are higher than that of co-rotators ($\Delta$PA $<$ 30$^\circ$) in both quiescent and star-forming galaxies. This result suggests that merging is one process to produce kinematic misalignments. The merging fraction of counter-rotators ($\Delta$PA $\leqslant$ 150$^\circ$) is lower than that of misaligned galaxies in both quiescent and star-forming galaxies, while in the latter it is likely even lower than that of co-rotators. The orbital angular momentum transfer to the spins of stars and gas during merging and the tidal feature disappearance can lead to small merging fractions in counter-rotators. Early-type galaxies (ETGs) are composed of two distinct populations: high-mass and low-mass, which are likely to be built via gas-poor merging and gas-rich merging/accretion, respectively. However, it is difficult to directly associate low-mass ETGs with gas-rich processes, because currently they are gas poor with no signs of ongoing star formation. We report a discovery of an ETG (SDSS J142055.01+400715.7) with Mstellar=10^10 Msun that offers direct evidence for gas-rich merging as the origin of low-mass ETGs. The integrated properties of the galaxy are consistent with a typical low-mass ETG, but the outer and inner regions show distinct dispersion- and rotation-dominated kinematics, respectively. There are some tidal features surrounding the galaxy. These two facts suggest very recent galaxy merging. Furthermore, the inner disk harbors on-going star formation, indicating the merging to be gas rich. We find a hard X-ray shortage at 30--50 keV promoted by the shower of soft X-rays coming from type-I bursts. This shortage happens with a time delay after the peak of the soft flux of 3.6 $\pm$ 1.2 seconds.The behavior of hard X-rays during bursts indicates cooling and reheating of the corona, during which a large amount of energy is required. Reinforcement learning agents are adaptive, reactive, and self-supervised. The aim of this dissertation is to extend the state of the art of reinforcement learning and enable its applications to complex robot-learning problems. In particular, it focuses on two issues. First, learning from sparse and delayed reinforcement signals is hard and in general a slow process. Techniques for reducing learning time must be devised. Second, most existing reinforcement learning methods assume that the world is a Markov decision process. This assumption is too strong for many robot tasks of interest, This dissertation demonstrates how one can possibly overcome the slow learning problem and tackle non-Markovian environments, making reinforcement learning more practical for realistic robot tasks.
