The use of high energy transients such as Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) as probes of the distant universe relies on the close collaboration between space and ground facilities. In this context, the Sino-French mission SVOM has been designed to combine a space and a ground segment and to make the most of their synergy. On the ground, the 1.3 meter robotic telescope COLIBRI, jointly developed by France and Mexico, will quickly point the sources detected by the space hard X-ray imager ECLAIRs, in order to detect and localise their visible/NIR counterpart and alert large telescopes in minutes. COLIBRI is equipped with two visible cameras, called DDRAGO-blue and DDRAGO-red, and an infrared camera, called CAGIRE, designed for the study of high redshift GRBs candidates. Being a low-noise NIR camera mounted at the focus of an alt-azimutal robotic telescope imposes specific requirements on CAGIRE. We describe here the main characteristics of the camera: its optical, mechanical and electronics architecture, the ALFA detector, and the operation of the camera on the telescope. The instrument description is completed by three sections presenting the calibration strategy, an image simulator incorporating known detector effects, and the automatic reduction software for the ramps acquired by the detector. CAGIRE is the near infrared camera of the Colibr\'i robotic telescope, designed for the follow-up of SVOM alerts. It is based on the ALFA 2k x 2k detector, from the LYNRED French Company, operating in "Up the Ramp" mode. An observation consists in a series of short (1-2 minutes) exposures during which the pixels are read out every 1.3 second, while continuously accumulating charges proportionally to the received flux. Exoplanet imaging requires super polished off-axis parabolas (OAP) with the utmost surface quality. In this paper we describe an innovative manufacturing process combining 3D printing and stress polishing, to create a warping harness capable of producing any off axis parabola profile with a single actuator. The warping harness is manufactured by 3D printing. This method will be applied to the production of the WFIRST coronagraph's off axis parabolas. The evolution of the warping harness design is presented, starting from a ring warping harness generating astigmatism, to an innovative thickness distribution harness optimised to generate an off axis parabola shape. Several design options are available for the prototyping phase, with their advantages and disadvantages which will be discussed.

3D printing, also called additive manufacturing, offers a new vision for optical fabrication in term of achievable optical quality and reduction of weight and cost. In this paper we describe two different ways to use this technique in the fabrication process. The first method makes use of 3D printing in the fabrication of warping harnesses for stress polishing, and we apply that to the fabrication of the WFIRST coronagraph off axis parabolas. The second method considers a proof of concept for 3D printing of lightweight X-Ray mirrors, targeting the next generation of X-rays telescopes. Stress polishing is well suited for the fabrication of the high quality off axis parabolas required by the coronagraph to image exoplanets.. Here we describe a new design of warping harness which can generate astigmatism and coma with only one actuator. The idea is to incorporate 3D printing in the manufacturing of the warping harness. The method depicted in this paper demonstrates that we reach the tight precision required at the mirrors surface. Moreover the error introduced by the warping harness fabricated by 3D printing does not impact the final error budget. Concerning the proof of concept project, we investigate 3D printing towards lightweight X-ray mirrors. We present the surface metrology of test samples fabricated by stereo lithography (SLA) and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) with different materials. The lightweighting of the samples is composed of a series of arches. By complementing 3D printing with finite element analysis topology optimization we can simulate a specific optimum shape for the given input parameters and external boundary conditions. The next set of prototypes is designed taking to account the calculation of topology optimisation.

In spite of major advances in both ground- and space-based instrumentation, the ultra-low-surface brightness universe (ULSB) still remains a largely unexplored volume in observational parameter space. ULSB observations provide unique constraints on a wide variety of objects, from the Zodiacal light all the way to the optical cosmological background radiation, through dust cirri, mass loss shells in giant stars, LSB galaxies and the intracluster light. These surface brightness levels (>28-29 mag arcsec^-2) are observed by maximising the efficiency of the surveys and minimising or removing the systematics arising in the measurement of surface brightness. Based on full-system photon Monte Carlo simulations, we present here the performance of a ground-based telescope aimed at carrying out ULSB observations, with a curved focal surface design. Its off-axis optical design maximises the field of view while minimising the focal ratio. No lenses are used, as their multiple internal scatterings increase the wings of the point spread function (PSF), and the usual requirement of a flat focal plane is relaxed through the use of curved CCD detectors. The telescope has only one unavoidable single refractive surface, the cryostat window, and yet it delivers a PSF with ultra-compact wings, which allows the detection, for a given exposure time, of surface brightness levels nearly three orders of magnitude fainter than any other current telescope., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

The emergence of curved sensors technologies opens a new way to design compact high-performance optical systems. Recent progress on the French activity on curved sensors are presented in terms of optical performance and experimental results. The existing prototypes are demonstrated at TRL4, for VIS and SWIR domains. We present the roadmap jointly developed by CEA and CNRS to reach a higher TRL either on the performance of the devices or on the mass production processes. We present the results obtained on two demonstrators.

Background: Throughout Europe, legal online pharmacies increasingly sell online drugs as well as other products such as dietary supplements. Online sale of pharmaceuticals however is closely connected to the phenomenon of drug falsification. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the opinions of a sample of Italian community pharmacists towards the sale of pharmaceuticals on the web, as well as their knowledge and experience with falsified drugs. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was distributed by means of an online platform between October 2016 and January 2017. Collected information included: demographics, workplace and role, opinions towards the online sale of pharmaceuticals, whether the pharmacy has a website, knowledge and opinions about falsified drugs. Results: A total of 668 community pharmacists completed the questionnaire (mean age: 48.5, SD 12.4 years, 52.3% women). Favourable opinions about online sale of pharmaceuticals were expressed by 4.9% of participants for prescription drugs, 25.4% for nonprescription drugs, and 51.6% for other products. Favourable opinions occurred more often among males and owners/directors of pharmacies in comparison to females and employees, and among pharmacists working in pharmacies with websites doing e-commerce. Knowledge about falsified drugs was limited, with 24.5% of respondents failing to indicate that falsified drugs may contain less or different ingredients, 46.4% less and/or different excipients, and 72.3% ignoring that falsified drugs may be lethal. One in 3 respondents didn't know about falsified drugs in Italy, however 51 participants had previous experience with falsified drugs and 21 provided specific information. Conclusions: Italian community pharmacists have low confidence in the online sale of pharmaceuticals, as well as alarmingly limited knowledge about falsified drugs, even if many of them reported previous experiences. Results may support targeted interventions to increase pharmacists

In the present paper we demonstrate the approach of using a holographic grating on a freeform surface for advanced spectrographs design. We discuss the surface and groove pattern description used for ray-tracing. Moreover, we present a general procedure of diffraction efficiency calculation, which accounts for the change of hologram recording and operation conditions across the surface. The primary application of this approach is the optical design of the POLLUX spectropolarimeter for the LUVOR mission project where a freeform holographic grating operates simultaneously as a cross-disperser and a camera with high resolution and high dispersion. The medium ultraviolet channel design of POLLUX is considered in detail as an example. Its resolving power reaches [126,000-133,000] in the region of 118.5-195 nm. Also, we show a possibility to use a similar element working in transmission to build an unobscured double-Schmidt spectrograph. Many astronomical optical systems have the disadvantage of generating curved focal planes requiring flattening optical elements to project the corrected image on flat detectors. The use of these designs in combination with a classical flat sensor implies an overall degradation of throughput and system performances to obtain the proper corrected image. With the recent development of curved sensor this can be avoided. This new technology has been gathering more and more attention from a very broad community, as the potential applications are multiple: from low-cost commercial to high impact scientific systems, to mass-market and on board cameras, defense and security, and astronomical community. We describe here the first concave curved CMOS detector developed within a collaboration between CNRS- LAM and CEA-LETI. This fully-functional detector 20 Mpix (CMOSIS CMV20000) has been curved down to a radius of Rc = 150 mm over a size of 24x32 mm^2 . We present here the methodology adopted for its characterization and describe in detail all the results obtained. We also discuss the main components of noise, such as the readout noise, the fixed pattern noise and the dark current. Finally we provide a comparison with the flat version of the same sensor in order to establish the impact of the curving process on the main characteristics of the sensor.

We consider using toroidal curved detectors to improve the performance of imaging optical systems. We demonstrate that some optical systems have an anamorphic field curvature. We consider an unobscured re-imaging three-mirror anastigmat as an example (f'=960 mm, F/5.3, FoV 4x4 degrees). By assuming that the image is focused on a toroidal detector surface and perform re-optimization, it becomes possible to obtain a notable gain in the image quality - up to 40 % in terms of the spot RMS radius. Through analytic computations and finite-element analysis, we demonstrate that this toroidal shape can be obtained by bending of a thinned detector in a relatively simple setup., Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures

The present paper describes the current baseline optical design of POLLUX, a high-resolution spectropolarimeter for the future LUVOIR mission. The instrument will operate in the ultraviolet (UV) domain from 90 to 390 nm in both spectropolarimetric and pure spectroscopic modes. The working range is split between 3 channels -- far (90-124.5 nm), medium (118.5-195 nm) and near (195-390 nm) UV. Each of the channels is composed of a polarimeter followed by an echelle spectrograph consisting of a classical off-axis paraboloid collimator, echelle grating with a high grooves frequency and a cross-disperser grating operating also as a camera. The latter component integrates some advanced technologies: it is a blazed grating with a complex grooves pattern formed by holographic recording, which is manufactured on a freeform surface. One of the key features underlying the current design is the large spectral length of each order ~6 nm, which allows to record wide spectral lines without any discontinuities. The modelling results show that the optical design will provide the required spectral resolving power higher than R ~ 120,000 over the entire working range for a point source object with angular size of 30 mas. It is also shown that with the 15-m primary mirror of the LUVOIR telescope the instrument will provide an effective collecting area up to 38 569 cm 2. Such a performance will allow to perform a number of groundbreaking scientific observations. Finally, the future work and the technological risks of the design are discussed in details.

It is shown that all the designs provide nearly diffraction limited image quality in the visible domain for $.4^\circ \times .4^\circ$ field of view with the f-number of 7. We also provide a brief ghost analysis and point on special features of the systems with curved detectors. Finally, the detector surface shape obtained in each case is analyzed and its' technological feasibility is demonstrated.

The first one is a rotationally-symmetrical lens with focal length of 25 mm, f-ratio of 3.5 and field of view equal to 72$^\circ$, working in the visible domain. The second design is a three-mirror anastigmat telescope with focal length of 250 mm, f-ratio of 2.0 and field of view equal to $4^\circ \times 4^\circ$. In both of the cases use of curved detectors allow to increase the image quality and substantially decrease the requirements for manufacturing precision

We present the design of an all-reflective, bi-folded Schmidt telescope aimed at surveys of extended astronomical objects with extremely-low surface brightness. The design leads to a high image quality without any diffracting spider, along with a large aperture and field of view, with a small central obstruction which barely alters the PSF. As an example, we present the design of a high-quality, 36 cm diameter, fast ( f /2.5) telescope working in the visible with a large field of view (1.6{\deg}x 2.6{\deg}). The telescope can operate with a curved detector (or with a flat detector with a field flattener) and a set of filters. The entrance mirror is anamorphic and replaces the classical Schmidt entrance corrector plate. We show that this anamorphic primary mirror can be manufactured through stress polishing, avoiding high spatial frequency errors, and tested with a simple interferometer scheme. This prototype is intended to serve as a fast-track scientific and technological pathfinder for the future space-based MESSIER mission., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables

SNe Ia können als Standardkerzen verwendet werden, um den Zustandsparameter der dunklen Energie w zu messen. Nachdem viele SN Ia beobachtet wurden, wird die Genauigkeit aktueller Studien durch systematische Fehler beschränkt, wobei die Flusskalibrierung (in Wellenlänge) die dominierende Fehlerquelle ist. In dieser Arbeit wird eine Möglichkeit präsentiert, das Problem mit dem “SNIFS Calibration Apparatus” (SCALA) zu lösen oder wenigstens zu verringern. Das Ziel von SCALA ist es, dass System aus Teleskop und SNIFS mit hoher Genauigkeit zu kalibrieren und diese Kalibration auf das Standardstern-Netzwerk zu übertragen und somit die Modellabhängigkeit zu unterdrücken. SCALA erzeugt 18 nahezu parallele und kolimierte monochromatische Strahlen (mit einstellbarer Wellenlänge), die Öffnungswinkel von einem Grad haben. Die Kombination dieser Strahlen leuchtet die Bildebene des UH 88, Teleskops (Universität Hawaii 88 inch Teleskop) mit einer Genauigkeit von 1% gleichmäß ig aus. SCALA wurde im Jahr 2014 installiert und ist seit 2015 im regulären Betrieb. Im in-situ Betrieb wird einer der Strahlen ständig mit einer Photodiode überwacht, die mit einer NIST-kalibrierten Photodiode kalibriert wurde. Eine zweite so kalibrierte Photodiode wird von Strahl zu Strahl bewegt, um den Helligkeitsverlauf der anderen 17 Strahlen als Funktion der Wellenlänge zu messen. Auf diese Weise sind wir in der Lage die Ausleuchtung von SCALA mit einer Genauigkeit von besser als 1% zu vermessen. Auf diese Weise kann mit der bekannten Wellenlänge des verwendeten Lichts die Transmissionskurve des SNIFS+UH 88 Systems gemessen werden. Die gemessenen systematischen Ungenauigkeiten der Messung sind kleiner als 0.7%. This work presents a way to solve, or at least limit, the problem with the SNIFS Calibration Apparatus (SCALA). SCALA's goal is to provide high precision calibration for the “telescope+ SNIFS” system and refine the primary standard star network, to eliminate the uncertainties due to the knowledge of their models. SCALA produces 18 quasi-parallel and collimated monochromatic (and wavelength tunable) beams with opening angles of 1 degree. The combination of these beams allows us to achieve an illumination of the focal plane of the University of Hawaii 88 inches telescope (UH 88), that is flat to within 1%. SCALA was commissioned in 2014 and fully deployed in 2015. In the in-situ set up, one of the SCALA beams is constantly monitored by a photodiode (calibrated against a NIST-calibrated photodiode), which is used as flux standard to transfer the NIST-calibration to the telescope+instrument first, and the standard star spectra afterwards. We measure the overall wavelength trend of the illumination from SCALA with a precision better than 1%, by moving another of these calibrated photodiodes from beam to beam. We can hence measure relative trasmissivity curves for each SCALA beam. Therefore, we can produce throughput curves of the SNIFS+UH 88 system. The measured systematics affecting our results sum to errors smaller than 0.7%. The next step would be to compare the calibration of the system achieved with SCALA with the traditional calibration obtained by observing standard stars.

We present the design of an all-reflective, bi-folded Schmidt telescope aimed at surveys of extended astronomical objects with extremely-low surface brightness. The design leads to a high image quality without any diffracting spider, along with a large aperture and field of view, with a small central obstruction which barely alters the PSF. As an example, we present the design of a high-quality, 36 cm diameter, fast ( f /2.5) telescope working in the visible with a large field of view (1.6{\deg}x 2.6{\deg}). The telescope can operate with a curved detector (or with a flat detector with a field flattener) and a set of filters. The entrance mirror is anamorphic and replaces the classical Schmidt entrance corrector plate. We show that this anamorphic primary mirror can be manufactured through stress polishing, avoiding high spatial frequency errors, and tested with a simple interferometer scheme. This prototype is intended to serve as a fast-track scientific and technological pathfinder for the future space-based MESSIER mission., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables
