Philanthropy provides substantial support for science and research—does it do the same for technology and invention? We match patenting outcomes in the United States with philanthropic organizations as listed in the Candid database and find that at least 0.2% of U.S. patenting since 1976 received philanthropic support. After matching philanthropic patents to non-philanthropic patents based on technology, time, and the number of inventors, we find that philanthropic invention is more likely to be done by smaller teams and U.S. based inventors and less likely to rely on science research and non-U.S. prior art. Renewal rates are not significantly different from non-philanthropic patents and philanthropic patents are not more likely to be in underserved areas of technology. Philanthropic supported patents receive significantly fewer future prior art citations, thus implying that philanthropy supported patents are not exceptionally valuable.

The full name of the FTO gene is fat mass and obesity-associated gene. In recent years, it has also been found that FTO is involved in m6A demethylation and regulates the progression of multiple cancers, including gastric cancer. The cancer stem cell theory argues that cancer stem cells are key factors in cancer metastasis, and inhibiting the expression of stemness genes is a good method to inhibit metastasis of gastric cancer. Currently, the role of the FTO gene in regulating stemness of gastric cancer cells is still unclear. By analyzing public databases, it was discovered that FTO gene expression was increased in gastric cancer, and high expression of FTO was associated with poor prognosis of patients with gastric cancer. After gastric cancer stem cells were isolated, it was found that FTO protein expression was increased in gastric cancer stem cells; stemness of gastric cancer cells was reduced after the FTO gene knockdown; subcutaneous tumors of nude mice were smaller than those of the control group after FTO knockdown; and stemness of gastric cancer cells was enhanced after FTO was overexpressed by plasmid. By reviewing additional literature and experimental validation, we found that SOX2 may be the factor by which FTO promotes the stemness of gastric cancer cells. Therefore, it was concluded that FTO could promote the stemness of gastric cancer cells, and targeting FTO may be a potential therapeutic approach for patients with metastatic gastric cancer. AbstractAntibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are widespread among bacteria. However, not all ARGs pose serious threats to public health, highlighting the importance of identifying those that are high-risk. Here, we developed an ‘omics-based’ framework to evaluate ARG risk considering human-associated-enrichment, gene mobility, and host pathogenicity. Our framework classifies human-associated, mobile ARGs (3.6% of all ARGs) as the highest risk, which we further differentiate as ‘current threats’ (Rank I; 3%) - already present among pathogens - and ‘future threats’ (Rank II; 0.6%) - novel resistance emerging from non-pathogens. Our framework identified 73 ‘current threat’ ARG families. Of these, 35 were among the 37 high-risk ARGs proposed by the World Health Organization and other literature; the remaining 38 were significantly enriched in hospital plasmids. By evaluating all pathogen genomes released since framework construction, we confirmed that ARGs that recently transferred into pathogens were significantly enriched in Rank II (‘future threats’). Lastly, we applied the framework to gut microbiome genomes from fecal microbiota transplantation donors. We found that although ARGs were widespread (73% of genomes), only 8.9% of genomes contained high-risk ARGs. Our framework provides an easy-to-implement approach to identify current and future antimicrobial resistance threats, with potential clinical applications including reducing risk of microbiome-based interventions.

The observable characteristics of the charged black hole (BH) surrounded by a thin disk accretion are investigated in the Rastall gravity. We found that the radii of the direct emission, lensing ring, and photon ring dramatically increased as the radiation field parameter increases, but they only weakly depend on the BH charge. Three positions of the radiation accretion disk relative to the BH are considered, i.e., the innermost accretion disk is closed to the radii of the innermost stable circular orbit, the photon ring of the BH, and the event horizon of the BH. The observed images in three cases respectively are obtained. It is found that the total observed flux is dominated by the direct emission, the lensing ring provides a small contribution, and the photon ring is negligible. The lensing and photon rings could not be observed in the blurred image with the EHT resolution. Our results suggest that the observable characteristics of the charged BH surrounded by the thin disk accretion in the Rastall gravity depend on both the BH space-time structure and the position of the radiating accretion disk with respect to the BH. The research of these BH images may serve as a probe for the BH-disk structure in M87$^{*}$ like nearby active galactic nuclei.

HIF means hypoxia-inducible factor gene family, and it could regulate various biological processes, including tumor development. In 2021, the FDA approved the new drug Welireg for targeting HIF-2a, and it is mainly used to treat von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, which demonstrated its good prospects in tumor therapy. As the fourth deadliest cancer worldwide, gastric cancer endangers the health of people all across the world. Currently, there are various treatment methods for patients with gastric cancer, but the five-year survival rate of patients with advanced gastric cancer is still not high. Therefore, here we reviewed the regulatory role and target role of HIF in gastric cancer, and provided some references for the treatment of gastric cancer.

The feature of the observed shadows and rings of an astrophysical black hole (BH) may depend on its accretion flows and magnetic charge. We find that the shadow radii and critical impact parameters of the Hayward BH are decreased with the increase of the magnetic charge. Comparing the Schwarzschild BH with the Hayward BH using the ray-tracing method, we show that the density and deflection of lights increase with the magnetic charge, and the BH singularity does not affect the generation of the shadow. Based on three optically thin accretion flow models, the two-dimensional shadows in celestial coordinates are derived. It is found that the shadow and photon ring luminosities of a Hayward BH surrounded by infalling spherical accretion flow are dimmer than that of a static spherical accretion flow. Taking three kinds of inner radii at which the accretion flow stops radiating, we find that the observed luminosity of a Hayward BH surrounded by a thin disk accretion flow is dominated by the direct emission, and the photon ring emission has a weak influence on it. The supernova remnant (SNR) B0532$-$67.5 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) was first diagnosed by its nonthermal radio emission and its SNR nature was confirmed by diffuse X-ray emission; however, no optical SNR shell is detected. The OB association LH75, or NGC 2011, is projected within the boundary of this SNR. We have analyzed the massive star population in and around SNR B0532$-$67.5: using optical photometric data to construct color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), using stellar evolutionary tracks to estimate stellar masses, and using isochrones to assess the stellar ages. From these analyses, we find a 20-25 Myr population in LH75 and a younger population less than 10 Myr old to the southwest of LH75. The center of SNR B0532$-$67.5 is located closer to the core of LH75 than the massive stars to its southwest. We conclude that the SN progenitor was probably a member of LH75 with an initial mass $\sim$15 $M_\odot$. The SN exploded in an H I cavity excavated by the energy feedback of LH75. The low density of the ambient medium prohibits the formation of a visible nebular shell. Despite the low density in the ambient medium, physical properties of the hot gas within the SNR interior do not differ from SNRs with a visible shell by more than a factor of 2-3. Two-phase transition branches of the Euler-Heisenberg (EH) anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole (BH) were derived from its phase transition critical behavior by Magos et al. [Phys. Rev. D. 102, 084011 (2020)]. We found that the phase transition is unstable. Considering the high-order quantum electrodynamics (QED) correction, we re-derive the EHAdS BH solution and investigate its critical thermodynamic quantities. It is found that the corrected EHAdS BH has only one stable phase transition branch, and its critical exponents are equivalent to that of the vdW system. From the microscopic point of view, we also derive its normalized scalar curvature based on the Ruppeiner geometry. Different from two concave surfaces of the scalar curvature without considering the high-order QED correction, we show that the corrected Ruppeiner geometry has only one concave surface. Our results indicate that the phase transition instability derived by Magos $et~al.$ is due to without considering the high-order QED correction., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

The wharf, which was built in the Three Gorges Reservoir of China, is constructed as a layered frame-type structure for adapting to large water level fluctuations that exceed 30 m. These large fluctuations cause the frame-type structure to exhibit a considerably higher number of load case combinations than traditional marine high-piled wharfs. To estimate the most adverse combined internal force and the corresponding unfavourable load case combinations of significant components for multilayered frame-type wharf structures in the Three Gorges Reservoir of China, a high-efficiency algorithm is developed in this study. This algorithm can skilfully transform the computational mode of load case combinations into a matrix operations process by computer programming. By applying the proposed algorithm, the number of load case combinations for eight significant components of frame-type wharf, including piles, columns, beams, braces and berthing components, are resolved to a total of 21 from the original quantity of more than six billion. This high-efficiency algorithm can provide powerful technical support for evaluating the bearing capability of multilayered frame-type wharfs in the Three Gorges Reservoir of China.

Wolframite image recognition is an efficient way to replace the concentrator for manual sorting, but the problem is that wolframite and the surrounding rock cannot be recognised. In this paper, convolutional neural network in deep learning was used to solve the problem. This method is fast convergence, small data set and accurate classification. Firstly, the RGB image of wolframite was augmented by rotation and translation to reduce sample imbalance. Secondly, the neural network optimised in this paper is used for new training based on Keras framework. Finally, the results show that Wu-VGG19 has the highest recognition rate of 97.51% in wolframite and surrounding rock recognition. We have studied the $\gamma p\to \eta \phi p$ reaction within the effective Lagrangian approach, and our results show that there may be a peak, at least a bump structure around 2180 MeV associated to the resonance $\phi(2170)$ in the $\eta\phi$ mass distribution. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have demonstrated extraordinarily good performance in many computer vision tasks. The increasing size of CNN models, however, prevents them from being widely deployed to devices with limited computational resources, e.g., mobile/embedded devices. The emerging topic of model pruning strives to address this problem by removing less important neurons and fine-tuning the pruned networks to minimize the accuracy loss. Nevertheless, existing automated pruning solutions often rely on a numerical threshold of the pruning criteria, lacking the flexibility to optimally balance the trade-off between model size and accuracy. Moreover, the complicated interplay between the stages of neuron pruning and model fine-tuning makes this process opaque, and therefore becomes difficult to optimize. In this paper, we address these challenges through a visual analytics approach, named CNNPruner. It considers the importance of convolutional filters through both instability and sensitivity, and allows users to interactively create pruning plans according to a desired goal on model size or accuracy. Also, CNNPruner integrates state-of-the-art filter visualization techniques to help users understand the roles that different filters played and refine their pruning plans. The strong decays of the $5^1S_0$ $q\bar{q}$ states are evaluated in the $^3P_0$ model with two types of space wave functions. Comparing the model expectations with the experimental data for the $\pi(2360)$, $\eta(2320)$, $X(2370)$, and $X(2500)$, we suggest that the $\pi(2360)$, $\eta(2320)$, and $X(2500)$ can be assigned as the members of the $5^1S_0$ meson nonet, while the $5^1S_0$ assignment for the $X(2370)$ is not favored by its width. Problem: Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and regulatory T cells (Tregs) have been suggested to play important roles during the initial stage of pregnancy. However, the clinical relevance and mechanism of the effects of hCG on Treg functions in women with recurrent implantation failure (RIF) remain to be elucidated. Method of study: Thirty-four RIF and twenty-three control women were included in the study. Endometrial and peripheral Tregs were analyzed by immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry, respectively. Tregs were generated from naïve CD4+ T cells by stimulation with anti-CD3/CD28 in the presence or absence of hCG, and the subsets were analyzed by flow cytometry, Western blotting, and qPCR. Results: The percentages of endometrial FOXP3+ Tregs and peripheral CCR4+FOXP3+ Tregs were significantly lower in the women with RIF than in the healthy controls. In addition, the percentages of CCR4+FOXP3+ Tregs and TGF-β-expressing FOXP3+ Tregs were increased following the stimulation of naïve CD4+ T cells with anti-CD3/CD28, and these increases were concomitant with AKT and ERK dephosphorylation. Conclusions: The results of this study provide novel evidence supporting a role of hCG in regulating the differentiation of peripheral FOXP3+ Tregs. BACKGROUND: A better understanding of mechanisms underlying dose-effects of probiotics in their applications as treatments of intestinal infectious or inflammatory diseases and as vaccine adjuvant is needed. In this study, we evaluated the modulatory effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) on transplanted human gut microbiota (HGM) and on small intestinal immune cell signaling pathways in gnotobiotic pigs vaccinated with an oral attenuated human rotavirus (AttHRV) vaccine. RESULTS: Neonatal HGM transplanted pigs were given two doses of AttHRV on 5 and 15 days of age and were divided into three groups: none-LGG (AttHRV), 9-doses LGG (AttHRV + LGG9X), and 14-doses LGG (AttHRV + LGG14X) (n = 3-4). At post-AttHRV-inoculation day 28, all pigs were euthanized and intestinal contents and ileal tissue and mononuclear cells (MNC) were collected. AttHRV + LGG14X pigs had significantly increased LGG titers in the large intestinal contents and shifted structure of the microbiota as indicated by the formation of a cluster that is separated from the cluster formed by the AttHRV and AttHRV + LGG9X pigs. The increase in LGG titers concurred with significantly increased ileal HRV-specific IFN-γ producing T cell responses to the AttHRV vaccine reported in our previous publication, suggesting pro-Th1 adjuvant effects of the LGG. Both 9- and 14-doses LGG fed pig groups had significantly higher IkBα level and p-p38/p38 ratio, while significantly lower p-ERK/ERK ratio than the AttHRV pigs, suggesting activation of regulatory signals during immune activation. However, 9-doses, but not 14-doses LGG fed pigs had enhanced IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, TLR9 mRNA levels, and p38 MAPK and ERK expressions in ileal MNC. Increased TLR9 mRNA was in parallel with higher mRNA levels of cytokines, p-NF-kB and higher p-p38/p38 ratio in MNC of the AttHRV + LGG9X pigs. CONCLUSIONS: The relationship between modulation of gut microbiota and regulation of host immunity by different doses of probiotics is complex.

When GLS is explicitly broken by complex Yukawa couplings, the model predictions for $\delta$ and $\theta_{23}$ can be significantly modified. Should future experiments will indeed determine $\theta_{23}$ and $\delta_{CP}$ away from the GLS limit values, one then had to consider models with broken GLS. The LHCb has discovered two new states with preferred $J^P$ quantum numbers $3/2^-$ and $5/2^+$ from $\Lambda_b$ decays. These new states can be interpreted as hidden charm pentaquarks. It has been argued that the main features of these pentaquarks can be described by diquark model. The diquark model predicts that the $3/2^-$ and $5/2^+$ are in two separate octet multiplets of flavor $SU(3)$ and there is also an additional decuplet pentaquark multiplet. Finding the states in these multiplets can provide crucial evidence for this model. The weak decays of b-baryon to a light meson and a pentaquark can have Cabibbo allowed and suppressed decay channels. We find that in the $SU(3)$ limit, for $U$-spin related decay modes the ratio of the decay rates of Cabibbo suppressed to Cabibbo allowed decay channels is given by $|V_{cd}|^2/|V_{cs}|^2$. There are also other testable relations for b-baryon weak decays into a pentaquark and a light pseudoscalar.
