Abstract: The tetraneutron has attracted the attention of nuclear physicists during the past decades, but there is still no unambiguous confirmation of its existence or non-existence. A new experiment based on ⁸He(p,2p)⁷H{t+⁴ n} reaction, with direct detection of the four neutrons, has been carried out at RIBF, which can hopefully help to draw a definite conclusion on the tetraneutron system.

Abstract: Nucleon knockout experiments using beryllium or carbon targets reveal a strong dependence of the quenching factors, i.e., the ratio (Rs) of theoretical to the experimental spectroscopic factors (C2S), on the proton-neutron asymmetry in the nucleus under study. However, this dependence is greatly reduced when a hydrogen target is used. To understand this phenomenon, exclusive H-1(Ne-17, 2p F-16) and inclusive C-12(Ne-17, 2p 1(6)F)X, 1(2)C(Ne-17, F-16)X as well as 1H(Ne-17,(16) F)X(X-denotes undetected reaction products) reactions with F-16 in the ground and excited states were anal- ysed. The longitudinal momentum distribution of F-16 and the correlations between the detached protons were studied. In the case of the carbon target, there is a significant deviation from the predictions of the eikonal model. The eikonal approximation was used to extract spectroscopic factor values (CS)-S-2. The experimental (CS)-S-2 value obtained with C target is markedly lower than that for H target. This is interpreted as rescattering due to simultaneous nucleon knockout from both reaction partners, Ne-17 and C-12.

However, this dependence is greatly reduced when a hydrogen target is used. To understand this phenomenon, exclusive H-1(Ne-17, 2p F-16) and inclusive C-12(Ne-17, 2p 1(6)F)X, 1(2)C(Ne-17, F-16)X as well as 1H(Ne-17,(16) F)X(X-denotes undetected reaction products) reactions with F-16 in the ground and excited states were anal- ysed. Abstract: The proton drip-line nucleus Ne-17 is investigated experimentally in order to determine its two-proton halo character. A fully exclusive measurement of the Ne-17(p, 2p)F-16* -> O-15+p quasi-free one-proton knockout reaction has been performed at GSI at around 500MeV/nucleon beam energy. All particles resulting from the scattering process have been detected. The relevant reconstructed quantities are the angles of the two protons scattered in quasi-elastic kinematics, the decay of F-16 into O-15 (including gamma decays from excited states) and a proton, as well as the O-15+p relative-energy spectrum and the F-16 momentum distributions. The latter two quantities allow an independent and consistent determination of the fractions of l = 0 and l = 2 motion of the valence protons in Ne-17. With a resulting relatively small l = 0 component of only around 35(3)%, it is concluded that Ne-17 exhibits a rather modest halo character only. The quantitative agreement of the two values deduced from the energy spectrum and the momentum distributions supports the theoretical treatment of the calculation of momentum distributions after quasi-free knockout reactions at high energies by taking into account distortions based on the Glauber theory. Moreover, the experimental data allow the separation of valence-proton knockout and knockout from the O-15 core. The latter process contributes with 11.8(3.1) mb around 40% to the total proton-knockout cross section of 30.3(2.3) mb, which explains previously reported contradicting conclusions derived from inclusive cross sections. Abstract: The proton drip-line nucleus Ne-17 is investigated experimentally in order to determine its two-proton halo character. A fully exclusive measurement of the Ne-17(p, 2p)F-16* -> O-15+p quasi-free one-proton knockout reaction has been performed at GSI at around 500MeV/nucleon beam energy. All particles resulting from the scattering process have been detected. The relevant reconstructed quantities are the angles of the two protons scattered in quasi-elastic kinematics, the decay of F-16 into O-15 (including gamma decays from excited states) and a proton, as well as the O-15+p relative-energy spectrum and the F-16 momentum distributions. The latter two quantities allow an independent and consistent determination of the fractions of l = 0 and l = 2 motion of the valence protons in Ne-17. With a resulting relatively small l = 0 component of only around 35(3)%, it is concluded that Ne-17 exhibits a rather modest halo character only. The quantitative agreement of the two values deduced from the energy spectrum and the momentum distributions supports the theoretical treatment of the calculation of momentum distributions after quasi-free knockout reactions at high energies by taking into account distortions based on the Glauber theory. Moreover, the experimental data allow the separation of valence-proton knockout and knockout from the O-15 core. The latter process contributes with 11.8(3.1) mb around 40% to the total proton-knockout cross section of 30.3(2.3) mb, which explains previously reported contradicting conclusions derived from inclusive cross sections. Abstract: States in the N = 35 and 37 isotopes Ca-55,Ca-57 have been populated by direct proton-induced nucleon removal reactions from Sc-56,Sc-58 and Ca-56 beams at the RIBF. In addition, the (p, 2p) quasi-free single-proton removal reaction from Ca-56 was studied. Excited states in K-55, Ca-55, and Ca-57 were established for the first time via in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy. Results for the proton and neutron removal reactions from Ca-56 to states in K-55 and Ca-55 for the level energies, excited state lifetimes, and exclusive cross sections agree well with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations using different approaches. The observation of a short-lived state in Ca-57 suggests a transition in the calcium isotopic chain from single-particle dominated states at N = 35 to collective excitations at N = 37. Abstract: The one-neutron knockout from 52Ca in inverse kinematics onto a proton target was performed at similar to 230 MeV/nucleon combined with prompt 7 spectroscopy. Exclusive quasifree scattering cross sections to bound states in 51Ca and the momentum distributions corresponding to the removal of 1f7=2 and 2p3=2 neutrons were measured. The cross sections, interpreted within the distorted-wave impulse approximation reaction framework, are consistent with a shell closure at the neutron number N = 32, found as strong as at N = 28 and N = 34 in Ca isotopes from the same observables. The analysis of the momentum distributions leads to a difference of the root-mean-square radii of the neutron 1f7=2 and 2p3=2 orbitals of 0.61(23) fm, in agreement with the modified-shell-model prediction of 0.7 fm suggesting that the large root-mean-square radius of the 2p3=2 orbital in neutron-rich Ca isotopes is responsible for the unexpected linear increase of the charge radius with the neutron number.

Abstract: The low-lying level structure of 59V and 61V was investigated for the first time. The neutron knockout reaction and inelastic proton scattering were applied for 61V while the neutron knock-out reaction provided the data for 59V. Four and five new transitions were determined for 59V and 61V, respectively. Based on the comparison to our shell-model calculations using the Lenzi-Nowacki-Poves-Sieja (LNPS) interaction, three of the observed ?? rays for each isotope could be placed in the level scheme and assigned to the decay of the first 11/2??? and 9/2??? levels. The (p, p') excitation cross sections for 61V were analyzed by the coupled-channels formalism assuming quadrupole plus hexadecapole deformations. Due to the role of the hexadecapole deformation, 61V could not be unambiguously placed on the island of inversion.

Abstract: A long-standing question in nuclear physics is whether chargeless nuclear systems can exist. To our knowledge, only neutron stars represent near-pure neutron systems, where neutrons are squeezed together by the gravitational force to very high densities. The experimental search for isolated multi-neutron systems has been an ongoing quest for several decades(1), with a particular focus on the four-neutron system called the tetraneutron, resulting in only a few indications of its existence so far(2-4), leaving the tetraneutron an elusive nuclear system for six decades. Here we report on the observation of a resonance-like structure near threshold in the four-neutron system that is consistent with a quasi-bound tetraneutron state existing for a very short time. The measured energy and width of this state provide a key benchmark for our understanding of the nuclear force. The use of an experimental approach based on a knockout reaction at large momentum transfer with a radioactive high-energy He-8 beam was key.

Abstract: The proton drip-line nucleus Ne-17 is investigated experimentally in order to determine its two-proton halo character. A fully exclusive measurement of the Ne-17(p, 2p)F-16* -> O-15+p quasi-free one-proton knockout reaction has been performed at GSI at around 500MeV/nucleon beam energy. All particles resulting from the scattering process have been detected. The relevant reconstructed quantities are the angles of the two protons scattered in quasi-elastic kinematics, the decay of F-16 into O-15 (including gamma decays from excited states) and a proton, as well as the O-15+p relative-energy spectrum and the F-16 momentum distributions. The latter two quantities allow an independent and consistent determination of the fractions of l = 0 and l = 2 motion of the valence protons in Ne-17. With a resulting relatively small l = 0 component of only around 35(3)%, it is concluded that Ne-17 exhibits a rather modest halo character only. The quantitative agreement of the two values deduced from the energy spectrum and the momentum distributions supports the theoretical treatment of the calculation of momentum distributions after quasi-free knockout reactions at high energies by taking into account distortions based on the Glauber theory. Moreover, the experimental data allow the separation of valence-proton knockout and knockout from the O-15 core. The latter process contributes with 11.8(3.1) mb around 40% to the total proton-knockout cross section of 30.3(2.3) mb, which explains previously reported contradicting conclusions derived from inclusive cross sections. Abstract: The nuclear structure of Ar-51, an uncharted territory so far, was studied by the (p,2p) reaction using gamma-ray spectroscopy for the bound states and the invariant mass method for the unbound states. Two peaks were detected in the gamma-ray spectrum and six peaks were observed in the Ar-50+n relative energy spectrum. Comparing the results to our shell-model calculations, two bound and six unbound states were established. Three of the unbound states could only be placed tentatively due to the low number of counts in the relative energy spectrum of events associated with the decay through the first excited state of Ar-50. The low cross sections populating the two bound states of Ar-51 could be interpreted as a clear signature for the presence of significant subshell closures at neutron numbers 32 and 34 in argon isotopes. It was also revealed that due to the two valence holes, unbound collective states coexist with individual-particle states in Ar-51. (C) 2021 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: A first gamma-ray study of Cl-47,Cl-49 spectroscopy was performed at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory with 50 Ar projectiles at 217 MeV/nucleon, impinging on the liquid hydrogen target of the MINOS device. Prompt deexcitation gamma rays were measured with the NaI(T1) array DALI2(+). Through the one-proton knockout reaction Ar-50(p, 2p), a spin assignment could be determined for the low-lying states of Cl-49 from the momentum distribution obtained with the SAMURAI spectrometer. A spin-parity J(pi) = 3/2(+) is deduced for the ground state of Cl-49, similar to the recently studied N = 32 isotope K-51. The evolution of the energy difference E(1/2(1)(+)) - E (3/2(1)(+)) is compared to state-of-the-art theoretical predictions.

Abstract: The tetraneutron has attracted the attention of nuclear physicists during the past decades, but there is still no unambiguous confirmation of its existence or non-existence. A new experiment based on He-8(p, 2p)H-7{t+(4)n} reaction, with direct detection of the four neutrons, has been carried out at RIBF, which can hopefully help to draw a definite conclusion on the tetraneutron system.

Abstract: Direct proton-knockout reactions of Sc-55 at similar to 220 MeV/nucleon were studied at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. Populated states of Ca-54 were investigated through -ray and invariant-mass spectroscopy. Level energies were calculated from the nuclear shell model employing a phenomenological intemucleon interaction. Theoretical cross sections to states were calculated from distorted-wave impulse approximation estimates multiplied by the shell model spectroscopic factors, which describe the wave function overlap of the Sc-55 ground state with states in Ca-54. Despite the calculations showing a significant amplitude of excited neutron configurations in the ground-state of Sc-55, valence proton removals populated predominantly the ground state of Ca-54. This counterintuitive result is attributed to pairing effects leading to a dominance of the ground-state spectroscopic factor. Owing to the ubiquity of the pairing interaction, this argument should be generally applicable to direct knockout reactions from odd-even to even-even nuclei.

Abstract: The low-lying level structure of V-63 was studied for the first time by the inelastic proton scattering and the proton knock-out reaction in inverse kinematics. The comparison of the newly observed gamma-ray transitions at 696(8) keV and 889(16) keV with our shell-model calculations using the Lenzi-Nowacki-Poves-Sieja interaction established two excited states proposed to be the first 11/2(-) and 9/2(-) levels. The (p, p') excitation cross sections were analyzed by the coupled channel formalism assuming pure quadrupole as well as quadrupole+hexadecapole deformations. This resulted in large deformation parameters placing V-63 in the island of inversion located below Ni-68.

The development of such systems is challenging and requires skills, expertise and inputs from a diverse range of experts, such as biologists, physicists, engineers, clinicians and regulatory bodies. Kirkstall Limited, a biotechnology company based in York, UK, organised the annual conference, Advances in Cell and Tissue Culture (ACTC), which brought together people having a variety of expertise and interests, to present and discuss the latest developments in the field of cell and tissue culture and in vitro modelling. The conference has also been influential in engaging animal welfare organisations in the promotion of research, collaborative projects and funding opportunities. This report describes the proceedings of the latest ACTC conference, which was held virtually on 30th September and 1st October 2020, and included sessions on in vitro models in the following areas: advanced skin and respiratory models, neurological disease, cancer research, advanced models including 3-D, fluid flow and co-cultures, diabetes and other age-related disorders, and animal-free research. The roundtable session on the second day was very interactive and drew huge interest, with intriguing discussion taking place among all participants on the theme of replacement of animal models of disease.

Abstract: A first gamma-ray study of Cl-47,Cl-49 spectroscopy was performed at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory with 50 Ar projectiles at 217 MeV/nucleon, impinging on the liquid hydrogen target of the MINOS device. Prompt deexcitation gamma rays were measured with the NaI(T1) array DALI2(+). Through the one-proton knockout reaction Ar-50(p, 2p), a spin assignment could be determined for the low-lying states of Cl-49 from the momentum distribution obtained with the SAMURAI spectrometer. A spin-parity J(pi) = 3/2(+) is deduced for the ground state of Cl-49, similar to the recently studied N = 32 isotope K-51. The evolution of the energy difference E(1/2(1)(+)) - E (3/2(1)(+)) is compared to state-of-the-art theoretical predictions.

Abstract: Direct proton-knockout reactions of Sc-55 at similar to 220 MeV/nucleon were studied at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. Populated states of Ca-54 were investigated through -ray and invariant-mass spectroscopy. Level energies were calculated from the nuclear shell model employing a phenomenological intemucleon interaction. Theoretical cross sections to states were calculated from distorted-wave impulse approximation estimates multiplied by the shell model spectroscopic factors, which describe the wave function overlap of the Sc-55 ground state with states in Ca-54. Despite the calculations showing a significant amplitude of excited neutron configurations in the ground-state of Sc-55, valence proton removals populated predominantly the ground state of Ca-54. This counterintuitive result is attributed to pairing effects leading to a dominance of the ground-state spectroscopic factor. Owing to the ubiquity of the pairing interaction, this argument should be generally applicable to direct knockout reactions from odd-even to even-even nuclei.

Abstract: The nuclear structure of Ar-51, an uncharted territory so far, was studied by the (p,2p) reaction using gamma-ray spectroscopy for the bound states and the invariant mass method for the unbound states. Two peaks were detected in the gamma-ray spectrum and six peaks were observed in the Ar-50+n relative energy spectrum. Comparing the results to our shell-model calculations, two bound and six unbound states were established. Three of the unbound states could only be placed tentatively due to the low number of counts in the relative energy spectrum of events associated with the decay through the first excited state of Ar-50. The low cross sections populating the two bound states of Ar-51 could be interpreted as a clear signature for the presence of significant subshell closures at neutron numbers 32 and 34 in argon isotopes. It was also revealed that due to the two valence holes, unbound collective states coexist with individual-particle states in Ar-51. (C) 2021 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: The tetraneutron has attracted the attention of nuclear physicists during the past decades, but there is still no unambiguous confirmation of its existence or non-existence. A new experiment based on He-8(p, 2p)H-7{t+(4)n} reaction, with direct detection of the four neutrons, has been carried out at RIBF, which can hopefully help to draw a definite conclusion on the tetraneutron system.

Abstract: Introduction/Aim. ATP Binding Cassette Subfamily A Member 3 (ABCA-3) is a lipid transporter protein highly expressed in type-II alveolar (AT-II) cells. Mutations in ABCA3 can result in severe respiratory disease in infants and children. Cell cultures derived from patients with ABCA-3 deficiency that reflect the genetic and phenotypic features of ABCA-3 associated lung disease, would provide a means to study disease mechanisms and investigate therapeutics. Primary AT-II cells, while physiologically relevant to ABCA-3 deficiency, are not generally accessible. ABCA-3 is present in the nasopharynx, hence primary nasal epithelial cells could potentially provide a more accessible cell culture model. Our aim was to investigate the suitability of nasal epithelial cells to study ABCA-3 deficiency. Methods. Expression of ABCA3, and AT-II cell markers, SFTPB and SFTPC, in nasal epithelial cells and primary AT-II cells, were quantified by droplet digital PCR. Protein localisation of ABCA-3 was visualised by immunofluorescent microscopy. Functionality of the ABCA-3 protein in nasal epithelial cells derived from human subjects with or without ABCA-3 deficiency was assessed by the capacity of the cells to detoxify doxorubicin. Results. While ABCA-3 protein was localised in the cytoplasm of primary nasal epithelial cells, mRNA levels were 6.35x103-fold lower in nasal epithelial cells compared to primary AT-II cells. Gene expression of SFTPB and SFTPC was also significantly lower by 5.26 x 106- and 5.36 x 106-fold, respectively. Higher concentrations of doxorubicin reduced cell viability in ABCA-3 deficient nasal epithelial cells compared to controls in an assay-dependent manner when using an MTS assay but not with a lactate dehydrogenase assay or by calcein blue staining. Conclusion. There may be a role for nasal epithelial cell cultures to model ABCA-3 deficiency depending on endpoints of interest. However, alternative approaches that more accurately replicate the AT-II phenotype

Abstract: Excited states in the N = 40 isotone Ti-62 were populated via the V-63( p, 2p)Ti-62 reaction at similar to 200MeV/nucleonat the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory and studied using gamma-ray spectroscopy. The energies of the 2(1)(+) -> 0(gs)(+) and 4(1)(+) -> 2(1)(+) transitions, observed here for the first time, indicate a deformed Ti-62 ground state. These energies are increased compared to the neighboring Cr-64 and Fe-66 isotones, suggesting a small decrease of quadrupole collectivity. The present measurement is well reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations based on effective interactions, while ab initio and beyond mean-field calculations do not yet reproduce our findings. The shell-model calculations for Ti-62 show a dominant configuration with four neutrons excited across the N = 40 gap. Likewise, they indicate that the N = 40 island of inversion extends down to Z = 20, disfavoring a possible doubly magic character of the elusive Ca-60. (C) 2019 The Authors. Abstract: We report on the first gamma-ray spectroscopy of K-51,K-53 produced via the Ca-52,Ca-54(p,2p) reactions at similar to 250 MeV/nucleon. Unambiguous final-state angular-momentum assignments were achieved for beam intensities down to few particles per second by using a new technique based on reaction vertex tracking combined with a thick liquid-hydrogen target. Through gamma-ray spectroscopy and exclusive parallel momentum distribution analysis, 3/(2)+ ground states and 1/2(+) first excited states in K-51,K-53 were established quantifying the natural ordering of the 1d(3/2) and 2s(1/2) proton-hole states that are restored at N = 32 and 34. State-of-the-art ab initio calculations and shell-model calculations with improved phenomenological effective interactions reproduce the present data and predict consistently the increase of the E(1/4)- E(3/4) energy differences towards N = 40. Abstract: Low-lying excited states in the N = 32 isotope Ar-50 were investigated by in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy following proton- and neutron-knockout, multinucleon removal, and proton inelastic scattering at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The energies of the two previously reported transitions have been confirmed, and five additional states are presented for the first time, including a candidate for a 3(-) state. The level scheme built using gamma gamma coincidences was compared to shell-model calculations in the sd-pf model space and to ab initio predictions based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions. Theoretical proton- and neutron-knockout cross sections suggest that two of the new transitions correspond to 2(+) states, while the previously proposed 4(1)(+) state could also correspond to a 2(+) state.

Abstract: Introduction/Aim. ATP Binding Cassette Subfamily A Member 3 (ABCA-3) is a lipid transporter protein highly expressed in type-II alveolar (AT-II) cells. Mutations in ABCA3 can result in severe respiratory disease in infants and children. Cell cultures derived from patients with ABCA-3 deficiency that reflect the genetic and phenotypic features of ABCA-3 associated lung disease, would provide a means to study disease mechanisms and investigate therapeutics. Primary AT-II cells, while physiologically relevant to ABCA-3 deficiency, are not generally accessible. ABCA-3 is present in the nasopharynx, hence primary nasal epithelial cells could potentially provide a more accessible cell culture model. Our aim was to investigate the suitability of nasal epithelial cells to study ABCA-3 deficiency. Methods. Expression of ABCA3, and AT-II cell markers, SFTPB and SFTPC, in nasal epithelial cells and primary AT-II cells, were quantified by droplet digital PCR. Protein localisation of ABCA-3 was visualised by immunofluorescent microscopy. Functionality of the ABCA-3 protein in nasal epithelial cells derived from human subjects with or without ABCA-3 deficiency was assessed by the capacity of the cells to detoxify doxorubicin. Results. While ABCA-3 protein was localised in the cytoplasm of primary nasal epithelial cells, mRNA levels were 6.35x103-fold lower in nasal epithelial cells compared to primary AT-II cells. Gene expression of SFTPB and SFTPC was also significantly lower by 5.26 x 106- and 5.36 x 106-fold, respectively. Higher concentrations of doxorubicin reduced cell viability in ABCA-3 deficient nasal epithelial cells compared to controls in an assay-dependent manner when using an MTS assay but not with a lactate dehydrogenase assay or by calcein blue staining. Conclusion. There may be a role for nasal epithelial cell cultures to model ABCA-3 deficiency depending on endpoints of interest. However, alternative approaches that more accurately replicate the AT-II phenotype

Abstract: Excited states in the N = 40 isotone Ti-62 were populated via the V-63( p, 2p)Ti-62 reaction at similar to 200MeV/nucleonat the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory and studied using gamma-ray spectroscopy. The energies of the 2(1)(+) -> 0(gs)(+) and 4(1)(+) -> 2(1)(+) transitions, observed here for the first time, indicate a deformed Ti-62 ground state. These energies are increased compared to the neighboring Cr-64 and Fe-66 isotones, suggesting a small decrease of quadrupole collectivity. The present measurement is well reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations based on effective interactions, while ab initio and beyond mean-field calculations do not yet reproduce our findings. The shell-model calculations for Ti-62 show a dominant configuration with four neutrons excited across the N = 40 gap. Likewise, they indicate that the N = 40 island of inversion extends down to Z = 20, disfavoring a possible doubly magic character of the elusive Ca-60. (C) 2019 The Authors. Abstract: We report on the first gamma-ray spectroscopy of K-51,K-53 produced via the Ca-52,Ca-54(p,2p) reactions at similar to 250 MeV/nucleon. Unambiguous final-state angular-momentum assignments were achieved for beam intensities down to few particles per second by using a new technique based on reaction vertex tracking combined with a thick liquid-hydrogen target. Through gamma-ray spectroscopy and exclusive parallel momentum distribution analysis, 3/(2)+ ground states and 1/2(+) first excited states in K-51,K-53 were established quantifying the natural ordering of the 1d(3/2) and 2s(1/2) proton-hole states that are restored at N = 32 and 34. State-of-the-art ab initio calculations and shell-model calculations with improved phenomenological effective interactions reproduce the present data and predict consistently the increase of the E(1/4)- E(3/4) energy differences towards N = 40. Abstract: Low-lying excited states in the N = 32 isotope Ar-50 were investigated by in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy following proton- and neutron-knockout, multinucleon removal, and proton inelastic scattering at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The energies of the two previously reported transitions have been confirmed, and five additional states are presented for the first time, including a candidate for a 3(-) state. The level scheme built using gamma gamma coincidences was compared to shell-model calculations in the sd-pf model space and to ab initio predictions based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions. Theoretical proton- and neutron-knockout cross sections suggest that two of the new transitions correspond to 2(+) states, while the previously proposed 4(1)(+) state could also correspond to a 2(+) state.

Abstract: By functionalizing the surface of PEG-liposomes with linkers bearing quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), we generated novel bacteria disruptors with anti-adhesive properties and reduced cytotoxicity compared to free QACs. Furthermore, QAC-functionalized liposomes are a promising platform for future drug encapsulation. The QAC (11-mercaptoundecyl)-N,N,N-trimethylammonium bromide (MTAB) was attached to maleimide-functionalized liposomes (DSPE-PEG) via thiol linker. The MTAB-functionalized liposomes were physicochemically characterized and their biological activity, in terms of anti-adherence activity and biofilm prevention in Escherichia coli were assessed. The results showed that MTAB-functionalized liposomes inhibit bacterial adherence and biofilm formation while reducing MTAB toxicity.

Abstract: The tetraneutron has attracted the attention of nuclear physicists during the past decades, but there is still no unambiguous confirmation of its existence or nonexistence. A new experiment based on 8 He(p,2p)7H{t+4n} reaction, with direct detection of the four neutrons, has been carried out at RIBF, which can hopefully help to draw a definite conclusion on the tetraneutron system.

Abstract: The first gamma-ray spectroscopy of Ar-52, with the neutron number N = 34, was measured using the K-53(p, 2p) one-proton removal reaction at similar to 210 MeV/u at the RIBF facility. The 2(1)(+) excitation energy is found at 1656(18) keV, the highest among the Ar isotopes with N > 20. This result is the first experimental signature of the persistence of the N = 34 subshell closure beyond Ca-54, i.e., below the magic proton number Z = 20. Shell-model calculations with phenomenological and chiral-effective-field-theory interactions both reproduce the measured 2(1)(+) systematics of neutron-rich Ar isotopes, and support a N = 34 subshell closure in Ar-52.

Abstract: Exclusive cross sections and momentum distributions have been measured for quasifree one-neutron knockout reactions from a Ca-54 beam striking on a liquid hydrogen target at similar to 200 MeV/u. A significantly larger cross section to the p(3/2), state compared to the f(5/2) state observed in the excitation of Ca-53 provides direct evidence for the nature of the N = 34 shell closure. This finding corroborates the arising of a new shell closure in neutron-rich calcium isotopes. The distorted-wave impulse approximation reaction formalism with shell model calculations using the effective GXPF1Bs interaction and ab initio calculations concur our experimental findings. Obtained transverse and parallel momentum distributions demonstrate the sensitivity of quasifree one-neutron knockout in inverse kinematics on a thick liquid hydrogen target with the reaction vertex reconstructed to final state spin-parity assignments.

Abstract: The first gamma-ray spectroscopy of Ar-52, with the neutron number N = 34, was measured using the K-53(p, 2p) one-proton removal reaction at similar to 210 MeV/u at the RIBF facility. The 2(1)(+) excitation energy is found at 1656(18) keV, the highest among the Ar isotopes with N > 20. This result is the first experimental signature of the persistence of the N = 34 subshell closure beyond Ca-54, i.e., below the magic proton number Z = 20. Shell-model calculations with phenomenological and chiral-effective-field-theory interactions both reproduce the measured 2(1)(+) systematics of neutron-rich Ar isotopes, and support a N = 34 subshell closure in Ar-52.

Abstract: The Borromean drip-line nucleus Ne-17 has been suggested to possess a two-proton halo structure in its ground state. In the astrophysical rp-process, where the two-proton capture reaction O-15(2p,gamma) Ne-17 plays an important role, the calculated reaction rate differs by several orders of magnitude between different theoretical approaches. To add to the understanding of the Ne-17 structure we have studied nuclear and electromagnetic dissociation. A 500 MeV/u Ne-17 beam was directed toward lead, carbon, and polyethylene targets. Oxygen isotopes in the final state were measured in coincidence with one or two protons. Different reaction branches in the dissociation of Ne-17 were disentangled. The relative populations of s and d states in F-16 were determined for light and heavy targets. The differential cross section for electromagnetic dissociation (EMD) shows a continuous internal energy spectrum in the three-body system O-15 + 2p. The Ne-17 EMD data were compared to current theoretical models. None of them, however, yields satisfactory agreement with the experimental data presented here. These new data may facilitate future development of adequate models for description of the fragmentation process.
