VSS 2020: 20th Annual Meeting Vision Sciences Society, Item does not contain fulltext, In "Hybrid Search", observers search for any member of a set of targets held in memory. Current hybrid search models propose working memory (WM) serves to pass representations of attended items one at a time from early visual processes into long-term memory (LTM) for comparison to target representations (Drew, et al., 2015). Here, we sought to better understand the role of WM in hybrid search using an ERP component associated with WM load, the Contralateral Delay Activity (CDA). Participants (N=20) memorized setsizes (MSS) of 2 or 16 categorical targets (dogs, cats, tables, or dressers), counterbalanced across participants. Next, they passed a recognition memory test twice with >=80% accuracy. Then, for 700 trials (per MSS), participants were cued to attend to one lateralized search item and indicate if a target was present. The cued object was either a target (e.g., target cat), a non-target from the target category (e.g., non-target cat), a non-target from a similar category (e.g., dog), or a non-target from a dissimilar category (e.g., table). ERP waveforms were time-locked to search onset. Overall, CDA amplitude was larger for objects from the target category, which provides support for the idea that processing is terminated for irrelevant objects following initial object identification (Cunningham & Wolfe, 2014). For objects within the target category, CDA amplitude increased with MSS, suggesting LTM load-dependent WM involvement in hybrid search. Furthermore, N2pc amplitude increased as the non-targets became more similar to the object category, but only for MSS16. This suggests more non-targets with similar features were selected for further processing in memory at larger MSS. Together, these findings demonstrate WM plays a larger role in hybrid search than previously thought. Specifically, to identify objects within the target category, WM resources may be deployed to compare the target set held in LTM to the potential target.

BACKGROUND: The homeobox containing transcription factor MSX2 is a key regulator of embryonic development and has been implicated to have a role in breast and pancreatic cancer. METHODS: Using a selection of two-and three-dimensional in vitro assays and tissue microarrays (TMAs), the clinical and functional relevance of MSX2 in malignant melanoma was explored. A doxycyline-inducible over-expression system was applied to study the relevance of MSX2 in vitro. For TMA construction, tumour material from 218 melanoma patients was used. RESULTS: Ectopic expression of MSX2 resulted in the induction of apoptosis and reduced the invasive capacity of melanoma cells in three-dimensional culture. MSX2 over-expression was shown to affect several signalling pathways associated with cell invasion and survival. Downregulation of N-Cadherin, induction of p21 and inhibition of both BCL2 and Survivin were observed. Cytoplasmic MSX2 expression was found to correlate significantly with increased recurrence-free survival (P = 0.008). Nuclear expression of MSX2 did not result in significant survival correlations, suggesting that the beneficial effect of MSX2 may be independent of its DNA binding activity. CONCLUSIONS: MSX2 may be an important regulator of melanoma cell invasion and survival. Cytoplasmic expression of the protein was identified as biomarker for good prognosis in malignant melanoma patients.

We consider two very different models of the flux tube linking two heavy quarks: a string linking the matter fields and a Coulombic description of two separately gauge invariant charges. We compare how close they are to the unknown true ground state in compact U(1) and the SU(2) Higgs model. Simulations in compact U(1) show that the string description is better in the confined phase but the Coulombic description is best in the deconfined phase; the last result is shown to agree with analytical calculations. Surprisingly in the non-abelian theory the Coulombic description is better in both the Higgs and confined phases. The inter-quark potential is dominated by anti-screening effects which underly asymptotic freedom. We calculate the order g^6 anti-screening contribution from light fermions and demonstrate that these effects introduce a non-local divergence. These divergences are shown to make it impossible to define a coupling renormalisation scheme that renormalises this minimal, anti-screening potential. Hence the beta function cannot be divided into screening and anti-screening parts beyond lowest order. During the late Neogene, the Lambert Glacier–Amery Ice Shelf drainage system flowed across Prydz Bay in an ice stream that reached the shelf edge and built a trough mouth fan on the upper continental slope. The adjacent banks saw mostly subglacial till deposition beneath slower-moving ice. The fan consists mostly of debris flow deposits derived from the melting out of subglacial debris at the grounding line at the continental shelf edge. Thick debris flow intervals are separated by thin mudstone horizons deposited when the ice had retreated from the shelf edge. Age control at Ocean Drilling Program Site 1167 indicates that the bulk of the trough mouth fan was deposited prior to ~780 ka with as few as three debris flow intervals deposited since then. This stratigraphy indicates that extreme advances of the Lambert Glacier-Amery Ice Shelf system ceased during the mid-Pleistocene. Possible causes for this change are progressive over-deepening of the inner shelf, a reduction in maximum ice volumes in the interior of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet caused by temperature change, and a change in the interaction of Milankovich cycles and the response time of the ice sheet.

We prove that magnetic charge does not exist as a physical observable on the physical Hilbert space of the pure SU(2) gauge theory. The abelian magnetic monopoles seen in lattice simulations are then interpreted as artifacts of gauge fixing. The apparent physical scaling properties of the monopole density in the continuum limit observed on the lattice are attributed to the correct scaling properties of physical objects - magnetic vortices, as first argued by Greensite et. al. Strontium isotope stratigraphy was used to date 5 discrete horizons within the CRP-3 drillhole. A single in situ modiolid bivalve fragment at 10.88 mbsf gives an age of 30.9 (±0.8) Ma for the associated sediment. The four remaining well preserved fragments recovered from 29.94-190.31 mbsf are within error of this age, indicating a high sedimentation rate and suggesting little time is missing in disconformities. The diagenetic alteration of carbonate macrofossils by continental fluids (and possibly seawater) is a common feature to 320 mbsf.

Stable isotope analyses of marine bivalve growth increment samples have been used to estimate early Oligocene (29.4 - 31.2) Ma and early Miocene (24.0 Ma) seafloor palaeotemperatures from the southwestern continental margin of the Ross Sea. Measured d18O values average +2.5‰ in the early Miocene and range between +1.26 to +3.24‰ in the early Oligocene. The results show that palaeoceanographic conditions in McMurdo Sound during the mid-Cenozoic were significantly different from those of today. The minimum estimated spring through late summer seasonal temperature range was 3°C during the early Miocene and between 1 and 5°C during the early Oligocene. This compares to the equivalent modern day range of <0.5°C within the sound. Absolute seawater temperatures at <100 m depth were of the order of 5 to 7°C during both time slices, compared to modern day values of -1.4 to -1.9°C in the same area. The results are in broad agreement with early Oligocene Mg/Ca temperature estimates from deep Atlantic foraminifera as well as estimates from local terrestrial palynology and palaeobotany.

Gravel-free, high-resolution (1-metre spacing, 32 channel) particle size data from the CRP-2/2A drill core indicate that many of the diamictites were likely deposited from floating ice. Textural dislocations occur at most sequence boundaries and provide independent corroboration of the sequence stratigraphic interpretation. Likewise the data largely support the correlation drawn (Fielding et al., this volume) between the sequence stratigraphic cycles and the regional seismic stratigraphy (an alternative correlation to Reflector ‘f’ is also suggested). The gravel-free data appear to be reflecting predominantly regional (global?) forcing with some possible local effects, and long-term trends persisting through gravelly textural dislocations.

Reworked Quaternary (<1.7 Ma) and possible Pliocene (<2.4 Ma) sediments overlie a major sequence boundary at 25.92 metres below sea floor (mbsf). This hiatus is estimated to account for c. 16 Myr of missing section. Early Miocene to ?earliest Oligocene (c. 18.6 to >31 Ma) deposits below this boundary were cut by multiple erosion surfaces of uncertain duration. Strontium isotope ages are combined with 40Ar/39Ar dates, diatom and calcareous nannofossil datums and a palaeomagnetic polarity zonation, to produce an age model for the core.

A review is made of stratigraphical, geochemical and palaeogeographical data from the northern Antarctic Peninsula and the Southern Ocean for Late Mesozoic-Early Cenozoic times. Clay mineral and S/total organic C ratios are used to re-assess earlier scenarios, and it is suggested that eight climatic episodes affected the northern Antarctic Peninsula between Late Aptian and Palaeogene times. Evolving palaeogeographies in southern Gondwana allowed the connection of the inter-continental western Weddell Basin to the proto-Indian Ocean during Albian to Cenomanian times, and it is suggested that this caused an initial cooling of ambient temperatures in the northern Antarctic Peninsula area. This situation altered when the South Atlantic seaway was opened to equatorial regions, producing a Campanian warm episode. Throughout this period, the climate was humid and non-seasonal (ever-wet) and the adjacent seas were dominated by mineral-walled phytoplankton. A Maastrichtian to Mid-Palaeocene cool period is postulated following the establishment of more-polar ocean circulation routes along the southern edge of the Pacific Basin, and the climate became seasonally humid with phytoplankton production switching to organic-walled dominant. The global Palaeogene climatic optimum was a warm, ever-wet episode but as it waned from Mid-Eocene times, a further, relatively short, period of marked seasonality is recognised. Later, Eocene climates were again ever-wet and became progressively cooler. The Late Eocene-Early Oligocene opening of the Tasman Sea and Drake Passage seaways caused cold conditions on Seymour Island, followed rapidly by the earliest glacial sediments on King George Island and the establishment of mineral-walled phytoplankton dominance in the seas. The Oligocene to Quaternary succession encountered in CRP-2/2A is divided into twelve recurrent lithofacies (some of which have been subdivided further), reflecting a range of marine, glacimarine and possibly subglacial environments of sediment accumulation. A cyclical vertical arrangement of lithofacies was noted throughout the core, and is used as the basis for a sequence stratigraphic analysis. Twenty-four sequences are recognised, each of which begins with a Sequence Boundary (Glacial Surface of Erosion), and each is interpreted to record a cycle of glacial advance and retreat with associated changes in relative sea-level. During at least some of these cycles, ice is interpreted to have extended as far as and seaward of the drill-site. A recent reinterpretation of seismic reflection data by Henrys et al. (this volume) permits the first correlation between seismic reflection records and the stratigraphic surfaces identified herein. All but one of the reflectors recognised correspond to sequence boundaries, and most reflectors correspond to the base of thin, truncated and amalgamated sequences. Additionally, three thick and relatively complete sequences (9 to 11) are identified individually by seismic reflectors. The major surfaces of omission in CRP-2/2A, identified from a variety of evidence, correspond to changes in cross-sectional geometry in the seismic records, and in the case of the unconformity at 307 mbsf can be interpreted as recording the onset of a phase of active tectonic subsidence associated with half-graben development, bounded by periods of more uniform, slower, possibly thermal subsidence. Possible controls on cyclicity are discussed, and include long-term eustatic cycles, Milankovitch frequency cycles, and more local climatic and/or tectonic events. Early and late Quaternary (0 87- 1 3 Ma and 0-0 67 Ma respectively) age sediments overlie a major sequence boundary at 43.15 meters below sea floor (mbsf) This hiatus is estimated to account for -16 m y of missing section. Early Miocene (16 6-20 8-25 Ma) age deposits below this boundary are in turn cut by multiple erosion surfaces representing hiatuses of between 0.2 and 1.2 m.y. Estimated minimum sedimentation rates range between 0.9 and 2.8 cm/k.y. in the Quaternary, and 1.5 and 6.4 cm/k.y. in the lower Miocene.
