Abstract

Differential cross sections of the reactions pp --> d pi(+) and pp --> pn pi(+) have been measured at T-p = 400 MeV by detecting the charged ejectiles in the angular range 4 degrees less than or equal to Theta(Lab) less than or equal to 21 degrees. Abstract

The reactions pd --> eta + X have been measured at four beam energies: 930, 965, 1037 and 1100 MeV. The reactions were identified by detecting charged particles in plastic scintillator detectors and the eta photons in two arrays of CsI(Na) crystals. Abstract

We report on the first exclusive measurement of the 2 pi production in NN collisions at T-p = 750 MeV using a H-2 cluster jet target and the WASA/PROMICE detector at CELSIUS. The status of the search for NN-decoupled resonances in the pi NN-system is reviewed. After a short survey on the history of dibaryon searches reactions suitable for detecting such resonances are discussed. Abstract

The status of the search for NN-decoupled resonances in the πNN-system is reviewed. Abstract

A detector setup for the cooler storage ring CELSIUS is described. The setup detects particles produced in interactions between the internal beam and a cluster-jet target. Particles emitted in the forward direction are measured by means of arrays of plastic scintillators and proportional counters. Particles, particularly photons, emitted more isotropically are measured by means of two calorimeters containing CsI(Na) crystals. The performance of the setup is given for neutral meson production in proton-proton and proton-deuteron interactions in the energy range 290-1360 MeV., Source: Scopus

Abstract

The KARMEN collaboration has reported the possible observation of a hitherto unknown neutral and weakly interacting particle x, which is produced in the decay pi -> mu + x with a mass m(x) = 33.9 MeV. We have searched for this hypothetical decay branch by studying muons from pion decay in flight with the LEPS spectrometer at the piE3 channel at PSI and find branching ratios BR(pi- to mu- anti-x) < 4e-7 and BR(pi+ to mu+ x) < 7e-8 (95\% C.L.). Together with the limit BR > 2e-8 derived in a recent theoretical paper our result would leave only a narrow region for the existence of x if it is a heavy neutrino., Comment: 10 pages, TeX (uses epsf), 3 Postscript figures uu-encoded

Abstract

One approach to conquering sleeping sickness is the selective inhibition of trypanosomal triosephosphate isomerase, a key enzyme in the pathogen's metabolism, with cyclic hexapeptides. The thionylation of the Phe5-Phe6 amide bond of the cyclic hexapeptide cyclo(Gly1-Pro2-Phe3-Val4-Phe5-Phe6) is a minor modification, but effects a total rearrangement of the intramolecular hydrogen bonds which causes a drastic improvement of inhibitoric activity-maximum effect from minimum chemistry!

Abstract

Geophysical methods are used to evaluate the safety and stability of geological barriers in the Bischofferode potash mine in Germany for toxic waste disposal. The presence of water in salt rocks can impair both stability and the effectiveness of the rock as a barrier, so information about such zones must be included in the site assessment. The reliability of the information is increased by the use of more than one method. Electromagnetic techniques can provide a quick overview for planning the use of other methods. Data from electromagnetic, georadar, geoelectrical, seismic and sonar investigation can be evaluated in two ways: data from all the methods can be interpreted in terms of structure, and criteria specific to each method can be applied to identify anomalous values.
