La documentación de las intervenciones de conservación-restauración del patrimonio engloba los procesos metodológicos y los registros generados antes, durante y después de las mismas, influyendo en la preservación del patrimonio. El objetivo de esta investigación es analizar el contenido de las recomendaciones y normativas que enmarcan estos procesos, estudiando su evolución hasta la situación actual, tanto en el ámbito internacional como nacional. Para ello se analiza la doctrina internacional, la Ley del Patrimonio Histórico Español, las leyes autonómicas y el anteproyecto de reforma de la LPHE. Los resultados muestran que, en la doctrina internacional, las normativas amplían y complementan las anteriores. En el caso de España, cada comunidad autónoma dispone de leyes territoriales que determinan los procesos de intervención que han de disponer de documentación, aunque con diferencias entre ellas. Finalmente, las actualizaciones normativas recientes presentan la tendencia a incluir la documentación de la conservación-restauración, y a incorporar programas preventivos, como un requerimiento dentro del proyecto de intervención.

[ES] El presente proyecto evalúa la utilidad de las herramientas estadísticas para la clasificación y contextualización de colecciones patrimoniales, utilizando para ello el ejemplo concreto del registro de dientes de dinosaurios terópodo del Museo de Ciencias Naturales de Álava (aunque su aplicación es extensible a otros casos). La propuesta incluye como aspecto novedoso el empleo de información cualitativa (no numérica) que, en muchas ocasiones, suele excluirse de los análisis estadísticos. Por otro lado, se evita el sesgo disciplinar en la forma de analizar los datos al contar con especialistas de diferentes áreas que abordan problemas similares de clasificación (geomorfología, arqueología, economía e ingeniería). En el proyecto, se presta atención a la calidad de los datos de partida (esenciales para poder obtener resultados válidos) desde el punto de vista de la documentación 3D y la consideración de tratarse de piezas patrimoniales que deben ser manejadas según los protocolos adecuados y, por otro lado, también se aborda la distribución y reutilización de los datos. Asimismo, se reflexiona sobre el valor del conocimiento generado y las posibilidades de aprovechamiento, no sólo en el ámbito académico, sino también en el desarrollo económico y turístico del territorio.

The work presented here is part of an analysis based on HBIM modelling, which takes into account the successive phases of construction as a substantial aspect that characterizes the monuments. The interpretation begins with the study of textual and graphical documentary sources, which is developed in parallel to the three-dimensional modelling. For this purpose, four complementary courses of action are integrated: 1) massive: related to the conceptual masses and their relationships (either known of hypothetical), 2) spatial: concerning the location, orientation and configuration of the spaces inside and around the monument, as well as the interplay with both the natural and the inhabited spaces, 3) temporal: understanding the constructive evolution of the building based on historical studies, and 4) functional: regarding the function and current use of the spaces at the monastery. Thus, this methodology is a valid instrument not only to manage the ongoing actions of preventive conservation but also to illustrate the hypotheses on the constructive history and to ensure a global understanding of the information associated with the monument.

[EN] The current digital technologies development makes it possible to apply new forms of studying historical events considering the geographical point of view. They rely on the location and the relationships among the different elements that took part in them over a recreated space (e.g. relief, roads, rivers); once these elements have been laid out on the virtual space, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can be used to analyse several factors, such as distances, visibility, connectivity and so on. Nevertheless, the development of the actions was also driven by the aims, needs and beliefs (either wise or misguided) of the people/actors involved in those situations; therefore, some ways of including reasoning would significantly improve the actual recreation and understanding of the episodes. In this sense, “linear programming” is a very versatile tool for system modelling and optimization that is broadly used in many fields (e.g. industry, transports, agriculture, etc.). Likewise, this technique can also be applied to past scenarios to simulate dynamics and cross-check sources. In this text, two models regarding the distribution and the allocation of supplies during the siege of Bilbao, in the framework of the Third Carlist War (1872-1876), from both parties —beleaguerer and besieged— were established based on the war front textual reports. In these models, the scenario is recreated through the system variables (which define the alternatives that can be or could have been taken) and the constraints (which limit the range of action); moreover, the actors’ goals that guided the course of events are defined by the objective. Despite the simplification in the modelling, the results show very interesting hints about the dynamics involved during the processes and are able to highlight some critical issues that significantly conditioned the final results. Besides, the modelling process itself proved to be an opportunity for collaboration between historians and computer, [ES] El desarrollo de las tecnologías digitales ha posibilitado nuevas formas de estudio de los sucesos históricos desde la perspectiva geográfica. [EN] The concept of mock-up, which share with the drawing the expressive synthesis for the analysis of the architectural form and evolution, is an invaluable asset for the preservation of the heritage. To mark the 175th anniversary of the Práxedes Mateo Sagasta’s secondary school of Logroño (Spain), an exhibition about the history of the institution was organized at the premises of La Rioja Library. The current school building became operational in 1900 and was built on the former site of a Carmelite convent. In fact, the convent rooms were the first location for the school, after the expropriations of religious communities during the mid-19th century. For the benefit of the aforementioned exhibition, it was considered interesting to generate a three-dimensional (3D) virtual reconstruction of the convent buildings to show how it would have looked. However, the lack of sufficient contemporary graphic information was a challenge, so it was decided that an efficient solution would be to generate the virtual reconstruction from a paper craft model, which had been created by the librarian of the secondary school as a result of his research on this matter. This text describes the 3D modelling of that cut-out element by means of monoscopic photogrammetry (perspective drawing) and the use of non-realistic rendering based on the appearance of the paper mock-up (and not trying to recreate the real image of the buildings) so as to provide a suggestive view of the convent and create interactive exhibition items. Moreover, the text deals with the long-term preservation and the improvement of the re-use of the 3D models. De hecho, la primera sede del instituto estuvo situada en las dependencias de este mismo convento, tras la desamortización de los edificios eclesiásticos que tuvo lugar a mediados del siglo XIX. Como parte de la muestra, se consideró interesante generar una reconstrucción virtual tridimensional (3D) de los edificios del convento con el fin de mostrar cómo debieron haber sido. La dificultad, sin embargo, residía en la escasez de fuentes gráficas de la época que permitieran conocer su forma y apariencia; por este motivo, se decidió utilizar como base para la recreación virtual una maqueta en papel que había sido realizada por el bibliotecario del instituto como resultado de sus investigaciones a lo largo de los años. El presente texto describe el proceso de modelado 3D a partir de esta maqueta de papel utilizando técnicas de fotogrametría monoscópica (dibujo perspectivo) y el empleo de renderizados no realistas basados en el aspecto de la maqueta de papel (y no en el que debieron tener los edificios) con el fin de generar vistas evocadoras del convento y crear contenidos útiles para la mencionada exposición. Central to the entire discipline of heritage restoration and conservation is the concept of information management. Nevertheless, traditionally, conservation and restoration has been a poorly documented discipline, which has led not only to a lack of standardization and awareness about the processes carried out in the past, but also poses problems both when new restoration works are necessary and for the preventive conservation of the elements of heritage. This study sets out to propose a conceptual framework to explore the relationship between conservation of heritage and information management on the basis of case studies; in particular: a spatial data infrastructure (SDI) of a regional government concerning an endangered plant (wild grapevine) with an important potential for cultural and touristic uses in a wine-making region; an open data guide—the Digital Guide of Andalusian Cultural Heritage; a university repository connected to Europeana, which contains reports and outcomes of projects of geometric documentation of elements of heritage; a repository of an organization in charge of the protection and care of the heritage; and finally, two examples of the use of heritage building information models (HBIM) in complex monuments. After discussing the characteristics of each case, this paper concludes that, although the availability of information and tools is growing, further progress is still necessary concerning the interoperability, outreach and reuse of the different solutions.

[EN] The current digital technologies development makes it possible to apply new forms of studying historical events considering the geographical point of view. They rely on the location and the relationships among the different elements that took part in them over a recreated space (e.g. relief, roads, rivers); once these elements have been laid out on the virtual space, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can be used to analyse several factors, such as distances, visibility, connectivity and so on. Nevertheless, the development of the actions was also driven by the aims, needs and beliefs (either wise or misguided) of the people/actors involved in those situations; therefore, some ways of including reasoning would significantly improve the actual recreation and understanding of the episodes. In this sense, “linear programming” is a very versatile tool for system modelling and optimization that is broadly used in many fields (e.g. industry, transports, agriculture, etc.). Likewise, this technique can also be applied to past scenarios to simulate dynamics and cross-check sources. In this text, two models regarding the distribution and the allocation of supplies during the siege of Bilbao, in the framework of the Third Carlist War (1872-1876), from both parties —beleaguerer and besieged— were established based on the war front textual reports. In these models, the scenario is recreated through the system variables (which define the alternatives that can be or could have been taken) and the constraints (which limit the range of action); moreover, the actors’ goals that guided the course of events are defined by the objective. Central to the entire discipline of heritage restoration and conservation is the concept of information management. Nevertheless, traditionally, conservation and restoration has been a poorly documented discipline, which has led not only to a lack of standardization and awareness about the processes carried out in the past, but also poses problems both when new restoration works are necessary and for the preventive conservation of the elements of heritage. This study sets out to propose a conceptual framework to explore the relationship between conservation of heritage and information management on the basis of case studies; in particular: a spatial data infrastructure (SDI) of a regional government concerning an endangered plant (wild grapevine) with an important potential for cultural and touristic uses in a wine-making region; an open data guide—the Digital Guide of Andalusian Cultural Heritage; a university repository connected to Europeana, which contains reports and outcomes of projects of geometric documentation of elements of heritage; a repository of an organization in charge of the protection and care of the heritage; and finally, two examples of the use of heritage building information models (HBIM) in complex monuments. After discussing the characteristics of each case, this paper concludes that, although the availability of information and tools is growing, further progress is still necessary concerning the interoperability, outreach and reuse of the different solution

The concept of mock-up, which share with the drawing the expressive synthesis for the analysis of the architectural form and evolution, is an invaluable asset for the preservation of the heritage. To mark the 175th anniversary of the Praxedes Mateo Sagasta's secondary school of Logrono (Spain), an exhibition about the history of the institution was organized at the premises of La Rioja Library. The current school building became operational in 1900 and was built on the former site of a Carmelite convent. In fact, the convent rooms were the first location for the school, after the expropriations of religious communities during the mid-19th century. For the benefit of the aforementioned exhibition, it was considered interesting to generate a three-dimensional (3D) virtual reconstruction of the convent buildings to show how it would have looked. However, the lack of sufficient contemporary graphic information was a challenge, so it was decided that an efficient solution would be to generate the virtual reconstruction from a paper craft model, which had been created by the librarian of the secondary school as a result of his research on this matter. This text describes the 3D modelling of that cut-out element by means of monoscopic photogrammetry (perspective drawing) and the use of non-realistic rendering based on the appearance of the paper mock-up (and not trying to recreate the real image of the buildings) so as to provide a suggestive view of the convent and create interactive exhibition items. Moreover, the text deals with the long-term preservation and the improvement of the re-use of the 3D models. [ES] Los grafitos se localizan en el antiguo noviciado benedictino del monasterio, el cual está compuesto por cuatro estancias de dimensiones variables. En total son 17 los lienzos de muro que cuentan con grafitos documentados, que son los que se consideran en el presente proyecto. Cabe indicar que las estancias del noviciado se están en uso debido a su mal estado estructural de suelos, paredes y techos. Lo que no sólo supone una limitación respecto a las posibilidades de acceso y estudio de los grafitos, sino que también representa un riesgo de pérdida progresiva de los grafitos. Por su parte, las copias que se realizaron entre los años 2003 y 2004 (56 en total) se encuentran en láminas de plástico de tamaño variable, la mayoría en formatos A4 o A3 pero alguna de mayor tamaño, siendo la mayor de 86x49 cm.Las copias en plástico se han escaneado con un escáner de sobremesa a 600 ppp, las imágenes se han tratado y se han montado en el caso de que las escenas ocuparan varios escaneados, se han introducido metadatos descriptivos y generado las versiones digitales de las copias. The copies in plastic sheets (56 in total) were done between 2003 and 2004, most of them are in A4 and A3 format although some of them are larger, being the size of the largest one 86 x 49 cm. The plastic sheets were scanned with a flatbed scanner with a resolution of 600 dpi, the images were further processed and put together when more than one scan were necessary to cover the entire sheet. Then, the resulting digital copies were enriched with descriptive metadata. Likewise, a photographic report of the some significant graffiti —with no previous documentation— was done in situ.

Both kinds of models can be approximately inferred from fossil remains: bones for the former and ichnites (fossil footprints) for the latter. Obviously, there are important challenges in these models, let us see, for example, that a group of fossil bones (probably incomplete and deteriorate) is very far from a walking animal with not only the bones and the articulations but also with flesh, tendons, skin, claws and so on. In any case, fossil bones are the only material we have to start modelling. Therefore, the first step will be their 3D digitization. As the expected use of the 3D models defines the technical characteristics that these models need to comply with, the manuscript will reflect on the qualities that the models for biomechanical purposes need, paying attention to the completeness, geometric accuracy and resolution. Moreover, a practical case is presented with a comparison of a scanning technology (fringe projection) and close-range photogrammetry in order to model a 2 meters tall leg of a specimen of Edmontosaurus.

The 3D modeling was done from the pictures imported in a software that works with the perspective geometry (vanishing points), then textures from the photographs were assigned to the faces of the 3D model.
