In the filamentous ascomycete Neurospora tetrasperma, a large (approx. 7 Mbp) region of suppressed recombination surrounds the mating-type (mat) locus. While the remainder of the genome is largely homoallelic, this region of recombinational suppression, extending over 1500 genes, is associated with sequence divergence. Here, we used microarrays to examine how the molecular phenotype of gene expression level is linked to this divergent region, and thus to the mating type. Culturing N. tetrasperma on agar media that induce sexual/female or vegetative/male tissue, we found 196 genes significantly differentially expressed between mat A and mat a mating types. Our data show that the genes exhibiting mat-linked expression are enriched in the region genetically linked to mating type, and sequence and expression divergence are positively correlated. Our results indicate that the phenotype of mat A strains is optimized for traits promoting sexual/female development and the phenotype of mat a strains for vegetative/male development. This discovery of differentially expressed genes associated with mating type provides a link between genotypic and phenotypic divergence in this taxon and illustrates a fungal analogue to sexual dimorphism found among animals and plants.

The oomycete pathogen Phytophthora ramorum is responsible for sudden oak death (SOD) in California coastal forests. P. ramorum is a generalist pathogen with over 100 known host species. Three or four closely related genotypes of P. ramorum (from a single lineage) were originally introduced in California forests and the pathogen reproduces clonally. Because of this the genetic diversity of P. ramorum is extremely low in Californian forests. However, P. ramorum shows diverse phenotypic variation in colony morphology, colony senescence, and virulence. In this study, we show that phenotypic variation among isolates is associated with the host species from which the microbe was originally cultured. Microarray global mRNA profiling detected derepression of transposable elements (TEs) and down-regulation of crinkler effector homologs (CRNs) in the majority of isolates originating from coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia), but this expression pattern was not observed in isolates from California bay laurel (Umbellularia californica). In some instances, oak and bay laurel isolates originating from the same geographic location had identical genotypes based on multilocus simples sequence repeat (SSR) marker analysis but had different phenotypes. Expression levels of the two marker genes analyzed by quantitative reverse transcription PCR were correlated with originating host species, but not with multilocus genotypes. Because oak is a nontransmissive dead-end host for P. ramorum, our observations are congruent with an epi-transposon hypothesis; that is, physiological stress is triggered on P. ramorum while colonizing oak stems and disrupts epigenetic silencing of TEs. This then results in TE reactivation and possibly genome diversification without significant epidemiological consequences. We propose the P. ramorum-oak host system in California forests as an ad hoc model for epi-transposon mediated diversification.

Near-Earth asteroid 162173 (1999 JU3) is a potential flyby and rendezvous target for interplanetary missions because of its easy to reach orbit. The physical and thermal properties of the asteroid are relevant for establishing the scientific mission goals and also important in the context of near-Earth object studies in general. Our goal was to derive key physical parameters such as shape, spin-vector, size, geometric albedo, and surface properties of 162173 (1999 JU3). With three sets of published thermal observations (ground-based N-band, Akari IRC, Spitzer IRS), we applied a thermophysical model to derive the radiometric properties of the asteroid. The calculations were performed for the full range of possible shape and spin-vector solutions derived from the available sample of visual lightcurve observations. The near-Earth asteroid 162173 (1999 JU3) has an effective diameter of 0.87 +/- 0.03 km and a geometric albedo of 0.070 +/- 0.006. The chi2-test reveals a strong preference for a retrograde sense of rotation with a spin-axis orientation of lambda_ecl = 73 deg, beta_ecl = -62 deg and P_sid = 7.63 +/- 0.01 h. The most likely thermal inertia ranges between 200 and 600 Jm-2s-0.5K-1, about a factor of 2 lower than the value for 25143 Itokawa. This indicates that the surface lies somewhere between a thick-dust regolith and a rock/boulder/cm-sized, gravel-dominated surface like that of 25143 Itokawa. Specifically, their orbital evolutions show a similar profile, time shifted by only ~1000 yr, based on our time-lag theory. Coccidioides posadasii is a dimorphic fungal pathogen that grows as a Wlamentous saprobe in the soil and as endosporulating spheruleswithin the host. To identify genes speciWc to the pathogenic phase of Co. posadasii, we carried out a large-scale study of gene expression intwo isolates of the species. From the sequenced Co. posadasii genome, we chose 1000 open reading frames to construct a 70-mer microarray.RNA was recovered from both isolates at three life-cycle phases: hyphae, presegmented spherules, and spherules releasing endospores.Comparative hybridizations were conducted in a circuit design, permitting comparison between both isolates at all three life-cyclephases, and among all life-cycle phases for each isolate. By using this approach, we identiWed 92 genes that were diVerentially expressedbetween pathogenic and saprobic phases in both fungal isolates, and 43 genes with consistent diVerential expression between the two parasiticdevelopmental phases. Genes with elevated expression in the pathogenic phases of both isolates included a number of genes thatwere involved in the response to environmental stress as well as in the metabolism of lipids. The latter observation is in agreement withprevious studies demonstrating that spherules contain a higher proportion of lipids than saprobic phase tissue. Intriguingly, we discoveredstatistically signiWcant and divergent levels of gene expression between the two isolates proWled for 64 genes. The results suggest thatincorporating more than one isolate in the experimental design oVers a means of categorizing the large collection of candidate genes thattranscriptional proWling typically identiWes into those that are strain-speciWc and those that characterize the entire species.

Context.The observed sodium abundance of meteoroids in meteor showers might differ from the original abundance because of processing in interplanetary space after ejections from their parent bodies. Among various processes, thermal alteration of alkali silicate is most likely the major process of Na depletion. Aims.We clarify at which perihelion distances the thermal desorption alters the Na content of meteoroids that are observed as meteor showers. Methods.We compile Na abundances of meteoroids in meteor showers at each perihelion distance and compare them to the sublimation temperatures of alkali silicates. Results.Na abundances of meteoroids do not depend on their perihelion distances at AU. No Na depletion in these distances constrains the temperature of meteoroids at q=0.14 AU to be lower than the sublimation temperature of alkali silicates K. Conclusions.Meteoroid particles are characterized as large, compact, blackbody- like particles. On orbit with perihelion distances q < 0.1 AU, meteoroids would show evidence of thermal desorption of metals, in particular, Na.

At the altitude of 3,370 m on the Peruvian Andes, a 32m antenna owned by the telecommunications company Telefonica del Peru will be transformed to a Radio Telescope, it would be transferred to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP). The parabolic antenna was constructed in 1984 by Nippon Electric Co. (NEC) and worked as an INTELSAT station until 2000. A team of the National Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) evaluated the antenna in 2003 and reported its availability to be used as a Radio Telescope. In collaboration of the NAOJ a 6.7 GHz receiver is under construction and will be installed within this year. Initially the telescope as a single dish will monitor and survey Methanol Maser of YSO, higher frequencies equipment and VLBI instruments will be considered. The antenna will be managed by the IGP and used by universities in Peru, becoming a VLBI station will be a grate contribution to astronomy and geodetic community., Comment: 2 pages. 1 figure. On 4 July 2005, many observatories around the world and in space observed the collision of Deep Impact with comet 9P/Tempel 1 or its aftermath. This was an unprecedented coordinated observational campaign. These data show that (i) there was new material after impact that was compositionally different from that seen before impact; (ii) the ratio of dust mass to gas mass in the ejecta was much larger than before impact; (iii) the new activity did not last more than a few days, and by 9 July the comet's behavior was indistinguishable from its pre-impact behavior; and (iv) there were interesting transient phenomena that may be correlated with cratering physics.

Based on predictions of impact magnitude and cloud ejecta dynamics, we organized a SMART-1 ground-based observation campaign to perform coordinated measurements of the impact. Results from the coordinated multi-site campaign will be discussed.
