Inorganic polysulfur compounds (polysulfides, Sx2-; polysulfur radical ions, Sx·-; thiosulfate, S2O32-; polythionate, SxO62-; elemental sulfur, e.g. S8) participate in numerous geochemical processes related to the sulfur cycle. These include authigenic pyrite formation in sediments undergoing early stages of diagenesis, reactions associated with magmatic-hydrothermal processes, and numerous other aquatic sulfur redox processes (e.g., pyrite and sulfide oxidation). Sulfur isotope fractionations among many of these and associated compounds (e.g., H2S, HSO4-) are either unknown or unconstrained over wide ranges of temperatures. We present theoretical estimates of equilibrium sulfur isotope fractionation factors among aqueous polysulfur compounds (including select polysulfides, polysulfur radical anions, and polythionates) and select aqueous sulfide and sulfate compounds that correspond to all three stable isotope ratios of sulfur (33S/32S, 34S/32S, 36S/32S). Our estimates are based on electronic structure calculations performed at the B3LYP/6–31+G(d,p) level of theory and basis set implemented in concert with an explicit solvation model whereby molecules are encapsulated in water clusters of varying size (30–52 H2O) to simulate the aqueous solvation environment. These calculations yield relatively small magnitude fractionation factors between aqueous polysulfides, polysulfur radicals, and reduced sulfur moieties in polythionates relative to the aqueous sulfide compounds but reveal numerous crossovers that result in non-intuitive temperature dependencies. Our predictions of 34S/32S-based fractionation factors among aqueous sulfur compounds generally agree with previous experimental constraints where available within estimated uncertainties (e.g., HSO4-/H2S(aq), H2S(aq)/HS-, HSO4-/S0, H2S(aq)/S0). Rates of reaction were measured as a function of pH, temperature and concentrations of S2− and S0 in airtight stirred batch reactor. Reaction was carried out at [S0]/[S2−] < 0.1 in order to minimize a contribution of interfering reaction between orthorhombic cyclooctasulfur and polysulfides, which are stronger nucleophiles than sulfanide (HS−). Reaction was found to follow the 0.28 order with respect to activity of hydroxyl anion and first order with respect to concentrations of both hydrogen sulfide and orthorhombic cyclooctasulfur. The reaction activation energy was found to be 69 kJ mol−1. At conditions relevant for sulfidic marine sediments, the characteristic time of the reaction is c.a. 1 year. Relatively high activation energy of the reaction and distribution of polysulfide species testify to formation of polysulfides by a reaction between sulfanide and dissolved cyclooctasulfur rather than by direct nucleophilic dissolution of orthorhombic cyclooctasulfur.

The purpose of the research. The aim of the work was to find out the distribution of TLR2+-, TLR4+-, NOD2+- and RIGI+-lymphocytes in mesenteric lymph nodes in the rat progeny of experimental gestational diabetes (EGD), in the rat progeny with EGD whose mothers received glibenclamide and the descendants of rats with EGD who received oral insulin for 14 days after birth.Material and methods. For the identification of PRR+-lymphocytes an indirect immunofluorescence method using monoclonal or polyclonal antibodies was used.Results. Experimental gestational diabetes leads to an increase in the number of TLR2+, TLR4+, NOD2+ and RIGI+ lymphocytes in MLN in the progeny and changes the density of PRRs on immune cells. Changes are more pronouncedly at the age 1 month of life. Under conditions of the formation of oral tolerance to insulin the number of cortex TLR2+ and TLR4+ lymphocytes in 1-month progeny decreases. The amount of TLR2+ and RIG-I+ cells in medullary cords of these rats decreases too. The dynamics in the number of immunoreactive cells to PRRs in the cortex of MLN remains up to 6 months of age. Administration of glibenclamide to pregnant females reduces the number of TLR4+ and RIG-I+ lymphocytes in the MLN of 1-month progeny, but only TLR2+ cells in 6-month-old rats. It does not affect their number in medullary cords and decreases preferentially the PRRs density on immunopositive MLN lymphocytes in early terms of observation.Conclusions. The introduction of insulin to the progeny and glibenclamide to pregnant females reduces the level of activation of the innate immunity receptors in the MLN in offspring., Цель работы - выяснить характер распределения TLR2+-, TLR4+-, NOD2+- и RIGI+-лимфоцитов в брыжеечных лимфатических узлах у потомков крыс с экспериментальным гестационным диабетом (ЭГД), у потомков крыс с ЭГД, матери которых получали глибенкламид, и потомков крыс с ЭГД, которые получали пероральный инсулин в течение 14 дней после рождения.Материалы и методы. Для идентификации иммунопозитивных лимфоцитов применяли непрямой иммунофлюоресцентный метод с использованием моноклональных или поликлональных антител к соответствующим паттерн-распознающим рецепторам.Результаты. ЭГД приводит к увеличению количества TLR2+-, TLR4+-, NOD2+- и RIGI+-лимфоцитов в БЛУ у потомства, более выраженно - на 1 месяц жизни, изменяет плотность ПРР на иммунных клетках. В условиях формирования оральной толерантности к инсулину у 1-месячных потомков в КП БЛУ уменьшается количество TLR2+- и TLR4+-лимфоцитов, в МТ - TLR2+- и RIG-I+- клеток. Динамика по уменьшению количества клеток, иммунопозитивных к ПРР в КП БЛУ сохраняется до 6-месячного возраста. Введения глибенкламида беременным самкам снижают в КП БЛУ 1-месячных потомков количество TLR4+- и RIG-I+-лимфоцитов, у 6-месячных - только TLR2+-клеток, не влияют на их численность в МТ, преимущественно уменьшают плотность ПРР на иммунопозитивных лимфоцитах БЛУ на ранних сроках наблюдения.Выводы. This study investigates how glacially delivered reactive iron (oxyhydr) oxide and manganese oxide phases influence the biogeochemical cycling of sulfur in sediments of three Arctic fjords and how the biogeochemical signatures of these processes are preserved. Results reveal differences in the concentrations of dissolved iron and manganese in pore-waters and the concentration of solid-phase sulfur species within individual fjords and amongst the three fjords, likely controlled by the varying input of reactive iron (oxyhydr) oxides to the sediment. Broadly, the stations can be divided into three categories based on their biogeochemical signals. Stations in the first category, located in Smeerenburgfjorden, are characterized by relatively low concentrations of (easily) reducible particulate iron phases, increasing concentrations of iron monosulfides, pyrite, and elemental sulfur with depth, and low pore-water dissolved iron and manganese concentrations. Biogeochemical processes at these stations are primarily driven by organoclastic sulfate reduction, sulfur disproportionation and the subsequent reaction and sequestration of sulfide in the sediment as iron monosulfide and pyrite. Sulfur and oxygen isotope values of sulfate display progressive enrichment in heavy isotopes with depth at these stations. In contrast, concentrations of (easily) reducible particulate iron phases and pore-water dissolved iron (up to 850 mu M) and manganese (up to 650 mu M) are very high at stations of the second and third category, located in Kongsfjorden and Van Mijenfjorden, while iron monosulfide and pyrite contents are extremely low. The amount of pyrite and its isotope values in conjunction with organic sulfur compounds provide evidence for a detrital origin of a fraction of these sulfur compounds. Special attention of pharmaceutical scientists is attracted to the creation of new potential substances. They select natural heterocyclic molecules that exhibit various types of pharmacological activity as basic structures. Adamantane derivatives, as well as a number of other framework compounds, in the vast majority are biologically active substances. This fact causes interest to the given classes of organic compounds as potential sources for the development of new drugs. Due to the high pharmacological action of 1,2,4-triazole derivatives, the combination of adamantane and 1,2,4-triazole in one molecule can lead to the formation of high-level pharmacological substances.The aim of this work is the synthesis of some 2- (2 - ((5- (adamantane-1-yl) -4-R-1,2,4-triasole-3-yl) thio) acetyl) -N-R1-hydrazine-carbothioamides, study of their physical and chemical properties, antimicrobial and antifungal activity.Materials and methods. The chemical names of the compounds are given in accordance with the requirements of the IUPAC nomenclature (1979) and the recommendations of the IUPAC (1993). Study of the physical and chemical properties of 2-(2-((5-(adamantane-1-yl)-4-R-1,2,4-triazole-3-yl)thio)acetyl)-N-R1-hydrazine-carbothioamides have been carried out on the certified and licensed equipment in the ZSMU physical-chemical laboratories. The melting temperature was determined by an open capillary method on the Opti Melt MPA 100. The elemental composition of the synthesized compounds was determined on the universal analyzer Elementar Vario L cube (CHNS) (standard – sulfanilamide). 1H NMR spectra were recorded on a spectrometer Varian Mercury VX-200 (1H, 200 MHz) in dimethylsulfoxide-d6solvent (tetramethylsilane - internal standard) and are decoded using ADVASP(tm)Analyzer program (Umatek International Inc.). It has been a clear increase in the number of enteroviral infection (EI) activation in recent years. EI are the widespread agents of infectious diseases in children and adults. Moreover this virus affects various organs and tissues and it results in different symptoms of EI in patients of different age groups. All these facts lead to the difficulties in diagnostics, treatment and prophylactics of the EI clinical forms.Aim of the study was to improve diagnostics of the enteroviral infections (EVI) in children and adults based on the epidemiological features of the definitive clinical forms in season 2016.Materials and Methods. The study was carried out as a part of the Grant Agreement between Zaporizhzhia State Medical University (ZSMU) and "Regional Training Centre of Research in the HealthCare System" (theRepublic ofKazakhstan). 185 patient’s medical documentation was analyzed in the inpatient department. Only symptomatic patients with clinical manifestation of enteroviral infection different forms were included into the study. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used for enteroviruses detection.Results and Discussion: Enterovirus was identified in biological liquids in 36.7 % (68 patients) of cases. Patients with meningitis (35) prevailed among them. Other 9 patients had: exanthema, gastroenteritis, herpangina. An increase in the incidence of morbidity has been noted in August - November with the prevalence of meningitis in August – September, herpangina – in November. Most frequently EVI was detected in children aged 7 – 12 years and in young children. Meningitis dominated in school-aged children, exanthema – in children up to 3 years old.Conclusions. EVI is widespread cause of meningitis, vesicular or ulcerative lesions of the posterior oropharyngeal structures and exanthemas in young and early school-age children. Clear association between season and age features with type of the EVI clinical manifestation has been noted., В последние годы наметилась чёткая тенденция активизации энтеровирусной инфекции (ЭВИ) в мире, о чём свидетельствует постоянная регистрация в разных странах эпидемиологических подъёмов заболеваемости. ЭВ являются распространёнными возбудителями инфекционной болезни детей и взрослых. При этом они вызывают поражение разных органов и тканей, что приводит к разнообразию клинической картины ЭВИ у пациентов разных возрастных групп. Всё это создаёт трудности диагностики отдельных клинических форм ЭВИ и решения вопросов относительно проведения противоэпидемических мероприятий и их лечения.Цель работы – улучшить диагностику энтеровирусных инфекций у детей и взрослых на основании анализа эпидемиологических особенностей определённых клинических форм в сезоне 2016 года.Материалы и методы. Работа проведена в рамках реализации грантового договора между Запорожским государственным медицинским университетом (ЗГМУ) и Региональным учебным центром по научным исследованиям в системе здравоохранения (Республика Казахстан). Нами проанализирована медицинская документация 185 стационарных пациентов, которые имели клинические симптомы, характерные для разных форм энтеровирусной инфекции. По результатам ПЦР кала и/или ликвора, проведённой в лаборатории молекулярно-генетических исследований ЗГМУ, выделены группы пациентов с и без ЭВИ. Проанализированы особенности в каждой группе.Результаты. У 36,7 % (68 больных) выделено ЭВ. Среди них превалировали пациенты с менингитом (35). По 9 больным имели следующие клинические формы ЭВИ: экзантема, гастроэнтерит и герпангина. Отмечен подъём заболеваемости ЭВИ в августе–ноябре с превалированием ЭВ менингитов в августе–сентябре, ЭВ экзантем – в ноябре. Чаще ЭВИ регистрируется у детей 7–12 лет и у детей раннего возраста, с доминированием у детей школьного возраста менингитов, раннего возраста – экзантем.Выводы. ЭВ являются распространёнными возбудителями менингитов, экзантем и везикулёзного поражения ротовой полости детей раннего и младшего школьного возра, Останніми роками намітилася чітка тенденція активізації ентеровірусної інфекції (ЕВІ) у світі, про що свідчить постійна реєстрація в різних країнах епідеміологічних підйомів захворюваності та спалахів. ЕВ – поширені збудники інфекційних хвороб серед дітей і дорослих. До того ж ці збудники викликають ураження різних органів і тканин, що призводить до різноманітності клінічної картини ЕВІ в пацієнтів різних вікових груп. Усе це ускладнює діагностику окремих клінічних форм ЕВІ та вирішення питань щодо протиепідемічних заходів і лікування.Мета роботи – поліпшити діагностику ЕВІ в дітей і дорослих на підставі аналізу епідеміологічних особливостей окремих клінічних форм ЕВІ сезону 2016 року.Матеріали та методи. Робота виконана в рамках реалізації грантової угоди між Запорізьким державним медичним університетом (ЗДМУ) та Регіональним навчальним центром із наукових досліджень у системі охорони здоров’я (Республіка Казахстан). Проаналізовано медичну документацію 185 стаціонарних пацієнтів, які мали клінічні симптоми, що реєструються під час різних форм ЕВІ. За результатами ПЛР на наявність РНК ЕВ у фекаліях або лікворі, що здійснена в лабораторії молекулярно-генетичних досліджень ЗДМУ, виділені групи з і без ЕВІ.Результати. У 36,7 % (68 хворих) виявили ЕВ. Серед них превалювали пацієнти з менінгітом (35). По 9 хворих мали такі клінічні форми ЕВІ: екзантема, гастроентерит і герпангіна; відзначений підйом захворюваності ЕВІ в серпні–листопаді, превалювання ЕВ менінгітів у серпні–вересні, ЕВ екзантем – у листопаді. Частіше ЕВІ реєструються в дітей 7–12 років і в дітей раннього віку з домінуванням у дітей шкільного віку менінгітів, раннього віку – екзантем.Висновки. ЕВІ – поширені збудники менінгітів, екзантем і везикульозного ураження ротової порожнини дітей раннього й молодшого шкільного віку. Трапляються чітка сезонність і вікові особливості певних клінічних форм ЕВІ.

Background. Metabolic changes in terms of developing diabetes, especially hyperglycemia, can directly affect immune metabolism of lymphocytes. Objective: The aim was to find out the level of mRNA gene expression of Glut1, mTOR and AMPK1α in pancreatic lymphatic nodes (PLN) in rats with experimental streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus (ESIDM) and after introduction of metformin. Methods. Glut1, mTOR and AMPK1α mRNA expression were analyzed by real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Total RNA was extracted from PLN tissue by Trizol RNA Prep 100 (Isogen, Russia), according to the manufacturer's instructions. RNA was re-suspended in RNase free water, quantified and subjected to RT-PCR reaction using RT-PCR kit; RT (Syntol, Russia). To determine the level of Glut1, mTOR and AMPK1α mRNA, RT-PCR was performed in real-time by thermal cycler CFX96 ™ Real-Time PCR Detection Systems (Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc., USA). The relative level of gene expression were studied with rat reference genes GAPDH by the method ΔΔCt. Statistical analysis were conducted using available software «Bio-Rad SFX Manager 3.1» (Bio-Rad, USA). Results. It was established that hyperglycemia caused the transcript induction of genes of glucose transporter Glut1 (in 9,9-28,9 times, p<0,05) and protein kinase mTOR (in 5.3-3.3 times, p<0.05) in cells of PLN. Introduction of metformin to the diabetic rats resulted in an increased level of mRNA gene of AMPK1αby on 87% (p<0.05) on the 3rd week and 38 fold (p<0.05) on the 5th week of ESIDM development and inhibition of mTOR expression in PLN (in 3-14.7 times, p<0.05). Revealed increase of Glut1 and mTOR mRNA genes level in the PLN cells during diabetes can trigger their differentiation in effective pro-inflammatory subpopulation of Th1- and Th17-lymphocytes. Conclusion. The genes of nuclear factor of activated T-cells (NFATC) play a key role both in heart valves formation and immune response. The genes belong to transcriptional factors and lead to myocardial hypertrophy in postnatal period that is confirmed by experimental models on animals. The purpose of this study was to reveale NFATC1 and NFATC4 genes expression level in the blood of 30 children with congenital heart diseases (CHD), 15 of them had bicuspid aortic valve, 15 had CHD without valve anomalies and 15 healthy children of the control group. No patients had signs of heart failure. At the first sage of Doppler heart ultrasound study a significant increase of the left ventricle posterior wall and ventricular septum thickness in comparison with CHD and control was revealed in BAV group. At the second stage a significant rise of relative normalized expression of NFATC1 in BAV children compared to CHD and control without differences in the expression of NFATC4 gene were established. Thus, in children with bicuspid aortic valve, formation of early myocardial hypertrophy with changes in nuclear factor of activated T-cells genes expression with prevailing of NFATC1 expression takes place. The detection of NFATC1 expression level in the blood of children could be considered as an early marker of progressive myocardial hypertrophy.

An important function of the intestinal microbiota is to protect the body against pathogens. Disruption of the balance leads to dysbiotic displays and increased susceptibility to bacterial infections. Of particular interest are the processes of interaction of vancomycin, Salmonella enteritidis and Salmonella typhimurium representatives on intestinal flora. The data obtained by PCR Real-time shows that when vancomycin is administered into the content of the intestine – decreased numbers of Bacteroides, Enterococci, Peptostreptococci were observed, along with increased numbers of Enterobacteria, Proteus, Klebsiella, Salmonella and Shigella. Administration of S.enteritidis and S.typhimurium reduced the number of E.coli and Bacteroides spp., while increasing the number of P.aeruginosa, E.faecalis, E.faecium, Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp. and Peptostreptococcus anaerobius. Therefore, there is still a need to further understand the processes of interaction between Salmonella enteritidis, Salmonella typhimurium and representatives of normal intestinal microflora under conditions of systemic antibiotic therapy. Additionally, it would be beneficial to investigate the formation of an immune response in the intestinal mucosa, in order to develop effective treatment regimens salmonellosis gastroenteritis etiology., Важливою функцією кишкової мікробіоти є захист організму від патогенних мікроорганізмів. Тому необхідне подальше вивчення процесів взаємодії S. enteritidis та S. typhimurium з представниками нормальної мікрофлори кишечнику в умовах проведення антибіотикотерапії і формування системної імунної відповіді у слизовій кишечнику з метою розробки ефективних схем лікування гастроентеритів сальмонельозної етіології.

The amount of antibiotics has increased over the past decade. This also resulted in increase of microorganisms’ resistance to this class of drugs. Therefore, the synthesis of new compounds that have exhibited antimicrobial and antifungal activity and low level of side effects is an important issue of modern pharmacy. The 1,2,4-triazole system is very promising in this aspect.The aim was to study the antimicrobial and antifungal activity of 4-R-5-(thiophen-2-ylmethyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol and 3-(alkylthio)-4-R-5-(thiophen-2-ylmethyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole. Methods and results. In the study "serial dilutions" method has been used. The criteria for the activity of given compound was the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) which is the lowest concentration of drug that inhibits the growth of the test culture and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) which is the lowest concentration of drug that causes bactericidal effect. Test compounds are derivatives of 4-R-5-(thiophen-2-ylmethyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol and 3-(alkyl-thio)-4-R-5-(thiophene-2-ylmethyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole which exhibit antifungal and antimicrobial activity.Conclusion. The most active of the studied 1,2,4-triazole derivatives is 4 (4-methyl-3-(octylthio)-5-(thiophen-2-ylmethyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole), which manifests as antifungal and antimicrobial activity. В ходе исследования использовался метод серийных разведений. Критериями активности соединений выступили: минимальная ингибирующая концентрация (МИК) – наименьшая концентрация препарата, который тормозит рост тестовой культуры, и минимальная бактерицидная концентрация (МБцК) – наименьшая концентрация препарата, который вызывает бактерицидный эффект. Исследуемые соединения – производные 4-R-5-(тиофен-2-илметил)-4H-1,2,4-триазол-3-тиолов и 3-(алкил-тио)-4-R-5-(тиофен-2-илметил)-4H-1,2,4-триазола – проявляют противогрибковую и противомикробную активность. Нагревание 8-бромо-1-н-пропилтеобромина с избытком гидразина гидрата в среде водного диоксана ведет к образованию 8-гидразино-1-н-пропилтеобромина – удобного синтона для дальнейшей модификации ксантиновой молекулы. Взаимодействие 8-гидразинотеобромина с альдегидами привело к образованию ряда соответствующих 8-бензилиденгидразинопроизводных. Структура синтезированных соединений однозначно доказана методом ПМР-спектроскопии. Towards the end of the last deglaciation more than 13,500 years ago the southern Baltic Sea was a freshwater lake, the Baltic Ice Lake, for several thousand years during which iron-rich, organic-poor clay was deposited. The modern brackish-marine stage started about 8600 years ago with the deposition of organic-rich mud, which is today characterized by high rates of sulfate reduction and high concentrations of free sulfide. We studied the iron-sulfur diagenesis in gravity cores from the Arkona Basin, SW Baltic Sea, to track the progressing sulfidization front in the buried Ice Lake sediment. The geochemical zonation was unusual as the sulfate concentration dropped steeply by two thirds below which it increased again due to a deep sulfate reservoir. The reservoir had been established during the early Holocene marine period as sulfate and other seawater ions diffused down into the lake sediment for several thousand years. Sulfur isotope analyses confirmed its origin as seawater sulfate, while its oxygen isotope composition indicated a microbially catalyzed equilibration with ambient interstitial water, decoupled from net sulfate reduction. Today, hydrogen sulfide diffuses from the marine mud down into the lake sediment where a black band with high magnetic susceptibility and high iron monosulfide, greigite and elemental sulfur content shows progressing sulfidization of the large pool of solid-phase reactive iron. Dissolved iron from the deep Ice Lake sediment diffuses up to the sulfide front and provides a small supplement to the solid Fe(III) pool as a sulfide sink. Pyrite formation at the sulfidization front may involve surface-bound zero-valent sulfur while, above the front, polysulfides are in equilibrium with the system hydrogen sulfide - polysulfide - rhombic sulfur and may not be important for further pyrite formation. The deep Black Sea is known to be depleted in electron-acceptors for sulfide oxidation. This study on depth distributions of sulfur species (S(II), S(0), View the MathML sourceSn2-, View the MathML sourceS2O32-, View the MathML sourceSO32-, View the MathML sourceSO42-) in the Dvurechenskii mud volcano, a cold seep situated in the permanently anoxic eastern Black Sea basin (Sorokin Trough, 2060 m water depth), showed remarkable concentrations of sulfide oxidation products. Sulfite concentrations of up to 11 μmol L−1, thiosulfate concentrations of up to 22 μmol L−1, zero-valent sulfur concentrations of up to 150 μmol L−1 and up to five polysulfide species were measured in the upper 20 cm of the sediment. Electron-acceptors found to be available in the Dvurechenskii mud volcano (DMV) for the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide to sulfide oxidation intermediates are iron-minerals, and probably also reactive manganese phases. Up to 60 μmol g−1 of reactive iron-minerals and up to 170 μmol L−1 dissolved iron was present in the central summit with the highest fluid upflow and fresh mud outflow. Thus, the source for the oxidative power in the DMV are reactive iron phases extruded with the mud from an ancient source in the deeply buried sediments, leading to the formation of various sulfur intermediates in comparably high concentrations. Another possible source of sulfide oxidation intermediates in DMV sediments could be the formation of zero-valent sulfur by sulfate dependent anaerobic microbial oxidation of methane followed by disproportionation of zero-valent sulfur. Sulfide oxidation intermediates, which are produced by these processes, do not reach thermodynamic equilibrium with rhombic sulfur, especially close to the active center of the DMV due to a short equilibration time. Thus, mud volcano sediments, such as in the DMV, can provide oxidizing niches even in a highly reduced environment like the abyssal part of the Black Sea.

A new approach based on rapid, chemical derivatization in a single phase was used to determine the disproportionation constants and the underlying thermodynamics of inorganic polysulfides in aqueous solutions. This method resolves the dispute over the existence of hexasulfide in aqueous solutions and establishes the presence of even higher polysulfide chains in water. The Gibbs free energies of formation () for the polysulfide species are 77.4, 71.6, 67.4, 66.1, 67.2, 70.5, and 73.6 kJ/mol for n = 2−8, respectively. Our approach is based on single phase, fast methylation of polysulfides with methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (methyl triflate) and subsequent determination of the dimethylpolysulfides by HPLC. Two independent methods were used in order to confirm quantitative equivalence between the observed distribution of dimethylpolysulfides and the polysulfide distribution in the water: (i) Kinetic studies of each competing reaction step showed that the kinetics of the derivatization are faster than each of the competing reactions that may lead to disproportionation and deviation of the observed distribution of dimethylpolysulfides from that of the aqueous polysulfides. (ii) Determination of isotope mixing during the derivatization of a mixture of two solutions, one containing polysulfide of natural isotopic distribution and the second containing 34S-rich polysulfide revealed that polysulfide mixing during derivatization is rather low. The systematic error due to redistribution of pentasulfide during derivatization is 3% based on isotope dilution tests and less than 5% of total zero-valent sulfur based on kinetic considerations.

The development of functional printable materials enables the production of electronic components in unconventional materials and different form factors[1]. Here, we show magnetically sensitive inks/pastes based on magnetoresistive powder that can be printed via stencil, dispenser, or screen printing. We employ bismuth microparticles[2] as well as [Co/Cu], [Py/Cu],[3] and permalloy [4] flakes showing giant, anisotropic, or non-saturating large magnetoresistance, respectively. We demonstrate that magnetic field sensors based on various types of magnetoresistive flakes can be printed onto rigid, flexible, and deformable substrates. We employed block-copolymers and elastic binders to enable mechanical resilience of these sensors: they can withstand bending down to 16 µm, 100% of stretching, and bending for hundreds of cycles without losing functionality.[3] Additionally, by automatizing the dispenser printing process of bismuth-based pastes, we demonstrate the production of fully printed magnetic field sensors. The use of a micro-optically optimized high-power diode laser array provided a versatile approach for selective sintering of sensors over flexible foils in areas exceeding several square centimeters. In this work we experimentally confirm that such sensors retain their non-saturating magnetoresistive performance (MR = 146%) in high field conditions, allowing operation above 5 T. [2] Our printed magnetic field sensors can be used to create interfaces that are responsive to magnetic fields through remote human input. Being flexible, they can be laminated on the skin, or stuck onto any object, from a desk to a house wall. We demonstrate the capabilities of printed magnetic field sensors to work as an interface to navigate through digital maps, as input panels for smart home applications, and as interactive wallpapers. Owing to their unique optical, electrical, chemical and physical properties, nanoscale materials have shown remarkable potential for widespread applications in electronics, catalysis, sensing and nanomedicine, among other fields (Kamyshny and Magdassi, 2014; Corain et al., 2008; Kumar et al., 2015; Etheridge et al., 2013). A multitude of protocols have been well established to synthesize nanoparticles (NPs), including chemical reduction (Flores et al., 2013), physical vapor deposition (Wang et al., 2007) and irradiation routes (Shin et al., 2004; Dhand et al., 2015). Unfortunately, conventional physicochemical methods result, in most cases, in high environmental and economic costs (Dahl et al., 2007). Hence, there is a significant benefit in developing 90nontoxic and environmentally benign biological processes for NP synthesis (Faramarzi and Sadighi, 2013).
