Abstract

This study made it possible to calculate the frequency of childhood illnesses in the town of Kindu. After the investigations the following results were recorded: Bacterial diseases 467 cases, representing a frequency of 36.7%, parasitic diseases 418 cases, with a frequency of 32.9%, viral diseases 310 cases, representing a frequency of 24.4% and nutritional diseases 77 cases equivalent to a frequency of 6%.

Abstract

Isotopes of meteoric 10Be, 137Cs, 239+240Pu have been proposed as a soil redistribution tracer and applied worldwide as an alternative method to classical field-related techniques (e.g., sediment traps). Meteoric 10Be provides information about long-term soil redistribution rates (millennia), while 137Cs and 239+240Pu give medium-term rates (decades). A significant progress in developing new models and approaches for the calculation of erosion rates has been made; thus, we provide a global review (n = 59) of research articles to present these three isotopes (meteoric 10Be, 239+240Pu and 137Cs) as soil erosion markers in different environments and under different land-use types. Understanding the dynamics and behaviours of isotopes in the soil environment is crucial to determine their usefulness as soil erosion tracers; thus, we discuss the chemical–physical behaviour of meteoric 10Be, 137Cs and 239+240Pu in soils. The application of these isotopes sometimes has strong limitations, and we give suggestions on how to overcome them or how to adapt them to a given situation. This review also shows where these isotopic methods can potentially be applied in the future. A lack in knowledge about soil redistribution rates exists particularly in loess-dominated areas where the tillage system has changed or in areas with strong wind erosion.

Abstract

Soils in mountainous areas are often polygenetic, developed in slope covers that relate to glacial and periglacial activities of the Pleistocene and Holocene and reflect climatic variations. Landscape development during the Holocene may have been influenced by erosion/solifluction that often started after the Holocene climatic optimum. To trace back soil evolution and its timing, we applied a multi-methodological approach. This approach helped us to outline scenario of soil transformation. According to our results, some aeolian input must have occurred in the late Pleistocene. During that time and the early Holocene, the soils most likely had features of Cryosols or Leptosols. Physico-chemical and mineralogical analyses have indicated that the material was denudated (between late Boreal to the Atlantic) from the ridge and upper slope positions forming a colluvium at midslope positions. Later, during the Sub-Boreal, mass wasting of the remains of silt material deposited at the end of the Pleistocene age on the ridge top seems to have occurred. In addition, the cool and moist conditions caused the deposition of a colluvium at the lower slope positions. The next phase was characterised by the transformation of Leptosols/Cambisols into Podzols at upper slope or shoulder positions and to Albic Cambisols at midslope positions. During the Sub-Boreal period, Stagnosols started to form at the lower part of the slope catena. Overall, the highest erosion rates were calculated at the upper-slope position and the lowest rates at midslope sites. 10Be data showed that the Bs, BC/C were covered during the Holocene by a colluvium with a different geological composition which complicated the calculation of erosion or accumulation rates. The interpretation of erosion and accumulation rates in such multi-layered materials may, therefore, be hampered. However, the multi-methodological reconstruction we applied shed light on the soil and landscape evolution of the eastern Karkonosze Mts.

24. Flowing partially penetrating well: a solution of a mixed-type boundary value problem.

Abstract

A new semi-analytic solution to the mixed-type boundary value problem for a flowing partially penetrating well with infinitesimal skin situated in an anisotropic aquifer is developed. The solution is suited to aquifers having a semi-infinite vertical extent or to packer tests with aquifer horizontal boundaries far enough from the tested area. The problem reduces to a system of dual integral equations (DE) and further to a deconvolution problem. Unlike the analogous Dagan's steady-state solution [Water Resour. Res. 1978; 14:929–34], our DE solution does not suffer from numerical oscillations. The new solution is validated by matching the corresponding finite-difference solution and is computationally much more efficient. An automated (Newton–Raphson) parameter identification algorithm is proposed for field test inversion, utilizing the DE solution for the forward model. The procedure is computationally efficient and converges to correct parameter values. A solution for the partially penetrating flowing well with no skin and a drawdown–drawdown discontinuous boundary condition, analogous to that by Novakowski [Can. Geotech. J. 1993; 30:600–6], is compared to the DE solution. The D–D solution leads to physically inconsistent infinite total flow rate to the well, when no skin effect is considered. The DE solution, on the other hand, produces accurate results.
