Objectives The aim of the ITI Consensus Workshop on zygomatic implants was to provide Consensus Statements and Clinical Recommendations for the use of zygomatic implants. Materials and methods Three systematic reviews and one narrative review were written to address focused questions on (1) the indications for the use of zygomatic implants; (2) the survival rates and complications associated with surgery in zygomatic implant placement; (3) long-term survival rates of zygomatic implants and (4) the biomechanical principles involved when zygoma implants are placed under functional loads. Based on the reviews, three working groups then developed Consensus Statements and Clinical Recommendations. These were discussed in a plenary and finalized in Delphi rounds. Results A total of 21 Consensus Statements were developed from the systematic reviews. Additionally, the group developed 17 Clinical Recommendations based on the Consensus Statements and the combined expertise of the participants. Conclusions Zygomatic implants are mainly indicated in cases with maxillary bone atrophy or deficiency. Long-term mean zygomatic implant survival was 96.2% [95% CI 93.8; 97.7] over a mean follow-up of 75.4 months (6.3 years) with a follow-up range of 36–141.6 months (3–11.8 years). Immediate loading showed a statistically significant increase in survival over delayed loading. Sinusitis presented with a total prevalence of 14.2% [95% CI 8.8; 22.0] over a mean 65.4 months follow-up, representing the most common complication which may lead to zygomatic implant loss. The international experts suggested clinical recommendations regarding planning, surgery, restoration, outcomes, and the patient’s perspective.

AIM To compare subepithelial connective tissue grafts (SCTG) versus guided bone regeneration (GBR) for the treatment of small peri-implant dehiscence defects in terms of profilometric (primary outcome), clinical, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). METHODS Sixteen patients who presented with small buccal bone dehiscences (≤3 mm) following single implant placement were recruited. Following implant placement, buccal bone defect sites were randomly treated either with a SCTG or GBR. Six patients who lacked bone dehiscences after implant placement were assigned to a negative control. Transmucosal healing was applied in all patients. Patients were examined prior (T1) and after (T2) implant placement, at suture removal (T3), at implant impression (T5), at crown delivery (T6), and 12 (T7) months after crown delivery. Measurements included profilometric outcomes, marginal bone levels, buccal bone and soft tissue thickness, PROMs, and clinical parameters. All data were analyzed descriptively. RESULTS The median changes in buccal contour as assessed by profilometric measures between T1 and T5 showed a decrease of 1.84 mm for the SCTG group and 1.06 mm for the GBR group. Between T2 and T7, the median change in the buccal contour amounted to 0.45 mm for SCTG and -0.94 mm (=loss) for GBR. Patients' pain perception tended to be higher in SCTG than in GBR. All peri-implant soft tissue parameters showed healthy oral tissues and no clinically relevant differences between groups. CONCLUSION Within the limitations of this pilot study, treating small peri-implant dehiscence defects with a SCTG might be a viable alternative to GBR. The use of a SCTG tended to result in more stable profilometric outcomes and comparable clinical outcomes to GBR. However, patient-reported outcome measures tended to favor GBR.

Ni-rich positive electrodes for Li-ion batteries can provide enhanced initial discharge capacity yet suffer from significant capacity degradation upon cycling. Fluorination of Ni-rich NMC811 positive electrodes results in a capacity retention of more than 90% after 100 cycles upon cycling to 4.4 VLi. The increased cycling stability of F-modified NMC811 can be attributed to the modification of the oxide electronic structures, where density functional theory calculations shows that incorporating fluorine into the oxide lattice decrease the driving force of carbonate dissociation on the oxide surface. In situ infrared (IR) spectroscopy and ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) further supports this argument by showing less carbonate oxidation for F-modified LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) than as-received NMC811 upon charging. The reduced carbonate oxidation is coupled with minimal salt decomposition on the electrode surface, as revealed by XPS. Further comparing in situ IR and XPS with that of the heat-treated NMC811 and Li2CO3 allows for decoupling the solvent decomposition products, where oxides are responsible for the vinylene carbonate formation with two hydrogens removed whereas surface metal carbonates promote dehydrogenated ethylene carbonate with just one hydrogen removed. This work points towards the importance of the anion engineering to increase the cycling stability of Ni-rich NMC positive electrodes.

Anionic redox in positive electrode materials in Li-ion batteries provides an additional redox couple besides conventional metal redox, which can be harvested to further boost the energy density of current Li-ion batteries. However, the requirement for the reversible anionic redox activity remains under debate, hindering the rational design of new materials with reversible anionic redox. In this work, we employed differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) to monitor the release of oxygen and to quantify the reversibility of the anionic redox of Li2Ru0.75M0.25O3 (M = Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ru, Sn, Pt, Ir) upon first charge. X-ray absorption spectroscopy, coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, show that various substituents have a minimal effect on the nominal metal redox, yet more ionic substituents and reduced metal-oxygen covalency introduce irreversible oxygen redox, accompanied with easier distortion of the M-O octahedron and a smaller barrier for forming an oxygen dimer within the octahedron. Therefore, a strong metal-oxygen covalency is needed to enhance the reversible oxygen redox. We proposed an electron-phonon-coupled descriptor for the reversibility of oxygen redox, laying the foundation for high-throughput screening of novel materials that enable reversible anionic redox activity. Layered lithium nickel, manganese, and cobalt oxides (NMC) are among the most promising commercial positive electrodes in the past decades. Understanding the detailed surface and bulk redox processes of Ni-rich NMC can provide useful insights into material design options to boost reversible capacity and cycle life. Both hard X-ray absorption (XAS) of metal K-edges and soft XAS of metal L-edges collected from charged LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 (NMC622) and LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) showed that the charge capacity up to removing ∼0.7 Li/f.u. was accompanied with Ni oxidation in bulk and near the surface (up to 100 nm). Of significance to note is that nickel oxidation is primarily responsible for the charge capacity of NMC622 and 811 up to similar lithium removal (∼0.7 Li/f.u.) albeit charged to different potentials, beyond which was followed by Ni reduction near the surface (up to 100 nm) due to oxygen release and electrolyte parasitic reactions. This observation points toward several new strategies to enhance reversible redox capacities of Ni-rich and/or Co-free electrodes for high-energy Li-ion batteries.

Understanding (electro-)chemical reactions at the electrode-electrolyte interface (EEI) is crucial to promote the cycle life of lithium-ion batteries. In this study, we developed an in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) method, which provided unprecedented information on the oxidation of carbonate solvents via dehydrogenation on LiNixMnyCo1-x-yO2 (NMC). While ethylene carbonate (EC) was stable against oxidation on Pt up to 4.8 VLi, unique evidence for dehydrogenation of EC on LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NMC811) at voltages as low as 3.8 VLi was revealed by in situ FT-IR measurements, which was supported by density functional theory (DFT) results. Unique dehydrogenated species from EC were observed on NMC811 surface, including dehydrogenated EC anchored on oxides, vinylene carbonate (VC) and dehydrogenated oligomers which could diffuse away from the surface. Similar dehydrogenation on NMC811 was noted for EMC-based and LP57 (1 M LiPF6 in 3:7 EC/EMC) electrolytes. In contrast, no dehydrogenation was found for NMC111 or surface-modified NMC by coatings such as Al2O3. In addition, while the dehydrogenation of solvents was observed in 1 M electrolytes with different anions, they were not observed on NMC811 in the concentrated electrolyte (EC/EMC with 3.1 M LiPF6), indicating lithium coordination could suppress dehydrogenation. Dehydrogenation of carbonates on NMC811 accompanied with rapid growth of interfacial impedance with increasing voltage revealed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), while the electrode-electrolyte combinations without dehydrogenation did not show significant impedance growth. Therefore, minimizing carbonate dehydrogenation on the NMC surface by tuning electrode reactivity and electrolyte reactivity is critical to develop high-energy Li-ion batteries with long cycle life.

Understanding and controlling the (electro) chemical reactions between positive electrodes and electrolytes is essential to enhance the cycle life and safety of Li-ion batteries. Previous computational and experimental studies have shown that greater capacity loss of LiNixMnyCo1-x-yO2 (NMC) with increased Ni content can be attributed to the enhanced chemical oxidation of carbonate solvents by dehydrogenation and increased salt decomposition. In this study, we examine the role of a diphenyl carbonate (DPC) additive on the interfacial reactivity of LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2, LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2, LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC111, NMC622 and NMC811). Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier Transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy on NMCs showed that adding DPC in the electrolyte suppressed signals associated with dehydrogenation of ethylene carbonate (EC) from LiNi1/3Mn1/3Ni1/3O2 to LiNi0.8Mn0.1Ni0.1O2 (NMC111 to NMC811). In addition, having DPC in the electrolyte was accompanied with less PF6- salt anion decomposition to form less-fluorine coordinated species such as lithium nickel oxyfluorides or PF3O-like species as revealed by combined infrared spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) for Ni-rich NMCs. Such observations are in agreement with previous work showing that DPC can increase the cycling performance of NMC811. The reduced reactivity between NMC such as NMC811 and electrolyte with DPC can be attributed to the formation of surface reaction products from the electrochemical oxidation of DPC occurring at lower voltages compared to the chemical oxidative dehydrogenation of carbonates. This hypothesis is supported by in situ infrared spectroscopy measurements, which revealed electrochemical oxidation of diphenyl carbonate upon charging at 3.9 VLi, accompanied by the detection of a feature around 1824 cm-1 attributed to organic oxidation products adsorbed on the oxide surface, and a stable electrode/electrolyte interface on NMC811 at higher voltages.

The hydrogen adsorption energetics on the surface of inorganic compounds can be used to predict electrolyte stability in Li-ion batteries and catalytic activity for selective oxidation of small molecules such as H2 and CH4. Using first-principles density functional theory (DFT), the hydrogen adsorption was found to be unfavorable on high-band-gap insulators, which could be attributed to a lower energy level associated with adsorbed hydrogen relative to the bottom of the conduction band. In contrast, the hydrogen adsorption was shown to be the most favorable on metallic and semiconducting compounds, which results from an electron transfer from adsorbed hydrogen to the Fermi level or the bottom of the conduction band. Of significance, computed hydrogen adsorption energetics on insulating, semiconducting, and metallic oxides; phosphates; fluorides; and sulfides were decreased by lowering the ligand p band center, while the energy penalty for ligand vacancy formation was increased, indicative of decreased surface reducibility. A statistical regression analysis, where 16 structural and electronic parameters such as metal-ligand distance, electronegativity difference, Bader charges, bulk and surface metal and ligand band centers, band gap, ligand band width, and work function were examined, further showed that the surface ligand p band center is the most accurate single descriptor that governs the hydrogen adsorption tendency, and additional considerations of the band gap and average metal-ligand distance further reconcile the differences among compounds with different ligands/structures, whose ligand bands are different in shape and width. We discuss the implications of these findings for passivating coatings and design of catalysts and the need for novel theoretical methods to accurately estimate these quantities from first principles. The interfacial (electro)chemical reactions between electrode and electrolyte dictate the cycling stability of Li-ion batteries. Previous experimental and computational results have shown that replacing Mn and Co with Ni in layered LiNixMnyCo1-x-yO2 (NMC) positive electrodes promotes the dehydrogenation of carbonate-based electrolytes on the oxide surface, which generates protic species to decompose LiPF6 in the electrolyte. In this study, we utilized this understanding to stabilize LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) by decreasing free-solvent activity in the electrolyte through controlling salt concentration and salt dissociativity. Infrared spectroscopy revealed that highly concentrated electrolytes with low free-solvent activity had no dehydrogenation of ethylene carbonate, which could be attributed to slow kinetics of dissociative adsorption of Li+-coordinated solvents on oxide surfaces. The increased stability of the concentrated electrolyte against solvent dehydrogenation gave rise to high capacity retention of NMC811 with capacities greater than 150 mA h g-1 (77% retention) after 500 cycles without oxide-coating and Ni-concentration gradients or electrolyte additives.

Understanding the effect of electrode-electrolyte interface (EEI) on the kinetics of electrode reaction is critical to design high-energy Li-ion batteries. While electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is used widely to examine the kinetics of electrode reaction in Li-ion batteries, ambiguities exist in the physical origin of EIS responses for composite electrodes. In this study, we performed EIS measurement by using a three-electrode cell with a mesh-reference electrode, to avoid the effect of counter electrode impedance and artefactual responses due to asymmetric cell configuration, and composite or oxide-only working electrodes. Here we discuss the detailed assignment of impedance spectra for LiCoO2 as a function of voltage. The high-frequency semicircle was assigned to the impedance associated with ion adsorption and desorption at the electrified interface while the low-frequency semicircle was related to the charge transfer impedance associated with desolvation/solvation of lithium ions, and lithium ion intercalation/de-intercalation into/from LixCoO2. Exposure to higher charging voltages and greater hold time at high voltages led to no significant change for the high-frequency component but greater resistance and greater activation energy for the low-frequency circle. The greater charge transfer impedance was attributed to the growth of EEI layers on the charged LixCoO2 surface associated with electrolyte oxidation promoted by ethylene carbonate dehydrogenation.

Surface chemistry modification of positive electrodes has been used widely to decrease capacity loss during Li-ion battery cycling. Recent work shows that coupled LiPF6 decomposition and carbonate dehydrogenation is enhanced by increased metal-oxygen covalency associated with increasing Ni and/or lithium de-intercalation in metal oxide electrode, which can be responsible for capacity fading of Ni-rich oxide electrodes. Here we examined the reactivity of lithium nickel, manganese, cobalt oxide (LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2, NMC622) modified by coating of Al2O3, Nb2O5 and TiO2 with a 1 M LiPF6 carbonate-based electrolyte. Cycling measurements revealed that Al2O3-coated NMC622 showed the least capacity loss during cycling to 4.6 VLi compared to Nb2O5-, TiO2- coated and uncoated NMC622, which was in agreement with smallest electrode impedance growth during cycling from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Ex-situ infrared spectroscopy of charged Nb2O5- and TiO2-coated NMC622 pellets (without carbon nor binder) revealed blue peak shifts of 10 cm−1, indicative of dehydrogenation of ethylene carbonate (EC), but not for Al2O3-coated NMC622. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) of charged TiO2-coated NMC622 electrodes (carbon-free and binder-free) showed greater salt decomposition with the formation of lithium-nickel-titanium oxyfluoride species, which was in agreement with ex-situ infrared spectroscopy showing greater blue shifts of P-F peaks with increased charged voltages, indicative of species with less F-coordination than salt PF6− anion on the electrode surface. Greater salt decomposition was coupled with the increasing dehydrogenation of EC with higher coating content on the surface. This work shows that Al2O3 coating on NMC622 is the most effective in reducing carbonate dehydrogenation and accompanied salt decomposition and rendering minimum capacity loss relative to TiO2 and Nb2O5 coating.

The (electro)chemical reactions between positive electrodes and electrolytes are not well understood. We examined the oxidation of a LiPF6-based electrolyte with ethylene carbonate (EC) with layered lithium nickel, manganese, and cobalt oxides (NMC). Density functional theory calculations showed that the driving force for EC dehydrogenation on oxides, yielding surface protic species, increased with greater Ni content in NMC. Ex situ infrared and Raman spectroscopy revealed experimental evidence for EC dehydrogenation on charged NMC surfaces. Protic species on charged NMC surfaces from EC dehydrogenation could further react with LiPF6 to generate less-coordinated F species such as PF3O-like and lithium nickel oxyfluoride species on charged NMC particles and HF and PF2O2- in the electrolyte. Larger degree of salt decomposition was coupled with increasing EC dehydrogenation on charged NMC with increasing Ni or lithium deintercalation. An oxide-mediated chemical oxidation of electrolytes was proposed, providing new insights in stabilizing high-energy positive electrodes and improving Li-ion battery cycle life.

OBJECTIVES To compare two ridge preservation techniques and spontaneous healing in terms of hard and soft tissue changes 2 months after tooth extraction. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study was designed as a randomized controlled trial and included 75 patients. After single tooth extraction in the maxillary incisor/premolar area, patients were randomly allocated to one of the following groups: 1) ridge preservation with a xenogeneic bone substitute covered with a collagen matrix (CM-group), 2) ridge preservation with a xenogeneic bone substitute covered with a free palatal graft (PG-group) or 3) spontaneous healing (control). Eight weeks after tooth extraction, implants were placed and clinical, profilometric and radiographic evaluations were performed. In addition, the need for further guided bone regeneration (GBR) at implant placement was assessed. The differences between the treatment groups were compared with the One-way ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis test with the corresponding post hoc analysis. The proportions of the categorical parameters were compared with the Fisher´s exact test. RESULTS Seventy-five patients underwent early implant placement 8 weeks after tooth extraction and were evaluated. CM-group (-0.9 SD 0.6 mm) and PG-group (-1.0 SD 0.8 mm) showed less horizontal bone resorption compared to the control group (-3.2 SD 2.1 mm) (p<.001). Moreover, the necessity of GBR at implant placement was significantly less in CM-group (32%) and PG-group (24%) when compared to control group (72%) (p=.001). Patients in CM-group experienced less pain than PG-group, one week after tooth extraction (p=.042). No significant differences were found regarding graft evaluation, post-operative complications and soft tissue contour. CONCLUSIONS Ridge preservation using a xenogeneic bone substitute covered with a collagen matrix or a palatal graft, results in less bone resorption and fewer GBR procedures at early implant placement compared to spontaneous healing.

The close association of myelinated axons and their myelin sheaths involves numerous intercellular molecular interactions. For example, myelin‐associated glycoprotein (MAG) mediates myelin‐to‐axon adhesion and signalling via molecules on the axonal surface. However, knowledge about intracellular binding partners of myelin proteins, including MAG, has remained limited. The two splice isoforms of MAG, S‐ and L‐MAG, display distinct cytoplasmic domains and spatiotemporal expression profiles. We used yeast two‐hybrid screening to identify interaction partners of L‐MAG and found the dynein light chain DYNLL1 (also termed dynein light chain 8). DYNLL1 homodimers are known to facilitate dimerization of target proteins. L‐MAG and DYNLL1 associate with high affinity, as confirmed with recombinant proteins in vitro. Structural analyses of the purified complex indicate that the DYNLL1‐binding segment is localized close to the L‐MAG C terminus, next to the Fyn kinase Tyr phosphorylation site. The crystal structure of the complex between DYNLL1 and its binding segment on L‐MAG shows 2 : 2 binding in a parallel arrangement, indicating a heterotetrameric complex. The homology between L‐MAG and previously characterized DYNLL1‐ligands is limited, and some details of binding site interactions are unique for L‐MAG. The structure of the complex between the entire L‐MAG cytoplasmic domain and DYNLL1, as well as that of the extracellular domain of MAG, were modelled based on small‐angle X‐ray scattering data, allowing structural insights into L‐MAG interactions on both membrane surfaces. Our data imply that DYNLL1 dimerizes L‐MAG, but not S‐MAG, through the formation of a specific 2 : 2 heterotetramer. This arrangement is likely to affect, in an isoform‐specific manner, the functions of MAG in adhesion and myelin‐to‐axon signalling.

Background:Obesity has been shown to trigger adaptive increases in pancreasparenchymal and fat volume. Consecutively, pancreatic steatosis may lead to beta‐cell dysfunction. However, it is not known whether the pancreatic tissue compo-nents decrease with weight loss and pancreatic steatosis is reversible followingRoux‐en‐Y gastric bypass (RYGB). Therefore, the objective of the study was toinvestigate the effects of RYGB‐induced weight loss on pancreatic volume andglucose homeostasis.Methods:Eleven patients were recruited in the Obesity Centre of the UniversityMedical Centre Hamburg‐Eppendorf. Before and 6 months after RYGB, total GLP‐1levels were measured during oral glucose tolerance test. To assess changes invisceral adipose tissue and pancreatic volume, MRI was performed. Measures ofglucose homeostasis and insulin indices were assessed. Fractional beta‐cell areawas estimated by correlation with the C‐peptide‐to‐glucose ratio; beta‐cell masswas calculated by the product of beta‐cell area and pancreas parenchymal weight.Results:Pancreas volume decreased from 83.8 (75.7‐92.0) to 70.5 (58.8‐82.3) cm3(mean [95% CI],P= .001). The decrease in total volume was associated with asignificant decrease in fat volume. Fasting insulin and C‐peptide were lower postRYGB. HOMA‐IR levels decreased, whereas insulin sensitivity increased (P= .03). Thiswas consistent with a reduction in the estimated beta‐cell area and mass.Conclusions:Following RYGB, pancreatic volume and steatosis adaptivelydecreased to“normal”levels with accompanying improvement in glucose homeosta-sis. Moreover, obesity‐driven beta‐cell expansion seems to be reversible; however,future studies must define a method to more accurately estimate functional beta‐cellmass to increase our understanding of glucose homeostasis after RYGB.

A high-rate injection of 20 000 m3 of water into granite between 2.8 and 3.4 km depth at the Soultz hot dry rock (HDR) test site in France in 1993 September led to a 200-fold increase in borehole transmissivity and produced a subvertical cloud of microseismicity of dimensions 0.5 km wide, 1.2 km long, 1.5 km high and oriented 25°NW. The resulting data set is unusually complete and well suited to studying permeability creation/enhancement processes in crystalline rock and the utility of microseismic data for revealing them. Although the microseismic cloud defined using joint hypocentre determination (JHD) locations was diffuse and showed little structure, application of the collapsing method showed it to be composed largely of discrete tubes and planes that propagated coherently. One prominent structure that extended 350 m downwards from the vicinity of a flow inlet early in the injection and that appears to contain a major flow path was subjected to detailed investigation to establish its hydrogeologic nature and the mechanisms underpinning its inferred permeability enhancement. High-resolution microseismic mapping techniques (i.e. multiplets and clustering) showed it to be a subvertical, NNW-SSE striking, fracture zone of width 10-20 m. The strike and scale of the structure identifies it as a member of a family of hydrothermally altered, cataclastic shear structures that constitute the primary permeable paths for fluid migration within the rock mass, both under ambient and forced fluid flow conditions. The microseismicity occurred on subvertical, small-scale fractures within the cataclastic shear zone whose azimuths scatter within 22° of parallel to the parent structure. Although the structure is likely to have been naturally permeable to some degree, its permeability appears to have been significantly enhanced as a consequence of the injection. The most likely mechanism of permeability enhancement, which is in accord with the strong preference for the microseismic

The state and development of coastal marine systems and an understanding of the interaction of organisms, sea floor, water column, and biochemical and physical processes can only be obtained by a combination of long-term monitoring and modelling approaches of different complexity. A need for the development and evaluation of monitoring strategies is driven by a framework of different European and German regulations. The research project WIMO (Scientific Monitoring Concepts for the German Bight) has developed concepts and methods that aim at a fundamental scientific understanding of marine systems and also meet monitoring requirements of European legislation and regulations like the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive. In this final report examples of common descriptors of ecosystem state like seabed integrity, eutrophication, and biodiversity are discussed. It has been assessed to what extent established measuring procedures used to survey the characteristics of the sea floor, and newly developed technologies are eligible for governmental monitoring. The significance of integrative modelling for linking and visualising results of measurements and models is illustrated. It is shown how new concepts have been implemented into governmental monitoring in the form of web based data sheets. These insights enable continuous analyses and developments in the future.

The OC has expanded its attention to include other nonmalignant conditions that can threaten fertility, and the work of the OC now extends around the globe, involving partners who together have created a community of shared effort, resources, and practices. The OC creates materials that are translated, disseminated, and amended by all participants in the field, and local programs of excellence have developed worldwide to accelerate the pace and improve the quality of oncofertility research and practice. Here we review the global oncofertility programs and the capacity building activities that strengthen these research and clinical programs, ultimately improving patient care.

The dynamics of magnetic fields with an amplitude of several tens of megagauss, generated at both sides of a solid target irradiated with a high-intensity (∼1019 W/cm2) picosecond laser pulse, has been spatially and temporally resolved using a proton imaging technique. The amplitude of the magnetic fields is sufficiently large to have a constraining effect on the radial expansion of the plasma sheath at the target surfaces. These results, supported by numerical simulations and simple analytical modeling, may have implications for ion acceleration driven by the plasma sheath at the rear side of the target as well as for the laboratory study of self-collimated high-energy plasma jets.
