1. Modelling the drying behaviour of liquids deposited by inkjet printing into surface structures for OLED manufacture

Abstract: For the manufacture of OLED displays, it is vital for the various layers of material to be as uniform as possible in order to optimise display quality, product lifetime and energy consumption. However, an experimental investigation into the drying of a droplet containing OLED material deposited into a pixel-shaped well by inkjet printing showed a tendency to form a protuberance, or accumulation, of fluid and material in centre of the well, characterised as a 'W-shaped' profile. Experiments also showed that 'M-shaped' profiles developed in some cases, with an accumulation of fluid and material near the walls of the well, and very little in the centre. In order to produce efficient OLED displays, with uniform layers of deposited material, a 'U-shaped' profile is desirable, where the majority of the material is distributed evenly across the base of the well. In this work, a numerical model is developed to simulate the evaporation of an axisymmetric droplet from within a well in order to better understand the physical mechanisms behind these experimentally observed droplet profiles. The model is based upon the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian approach and the Finite Element Method (FEM) with local evaporation rates coupled to the free surface, giving the model the ability to produce non-spherical cap droplet profiles, representing a considerable advantage over the "Classical model", and is thoroughly verified and validated against published numerical, analytical and numerical works. Studies of evaporation rate, surface tension, viscosity, thermocapillary and solutocapillary effects, bank structure depth, angle and aspect ratio, and the effect of having the viscosity and mass flux dependent on the concentration of a solute are conducted. It was found that the formation of a central protuberance is due to the ability of the flows from the centre of the droplet to maintain the radial outwards flows caused by enhanced evaporation at the contact line. When the outwards flows are sustained, a U-shaped profile will occur, and when they cannot, fluid in the intermediate region of the droplet will not be replenished, leading to a thinning of that region, and a W-shaped profile developing. This was the case in droplets with high evaporation rates, low surface tension or high viscosity, with a critical aspect ratio of the well of 30. M-shaped profiles were only seen with a surface tension gradient across the droplet surface intended to simulate the solutocapillary effect. Investigation was also carried out into the impact of a concentration-dependent viscosity, in which a novel oscillatory behaviour was observed in the protuberance height at increasing evaporation rates.

Abstract: The central theme of this thesis is 'morphological computation', in particular as it pertains to the generation of purposeful and intelligent behaviour. The first part of the thesis covers experiments in simulations, aimed at exploring a previously unasked question: can genuinely computational soft-body reservoirs play a central role in generating behaviour which has previously been described as 'minimally cognitive'? We conclude in the affirmative, but also note that it remains unclear whether or how they can also exceed such abilities. The main part of this work has been presented at ALIFE 14 and ECAL 15, and published in the Artificial Life journal. In part two, the focus moves to consideration of how morphological computation in soft bodies may collude with the action of nervous systems in the production of adaptive intelligent behaviour. The massive and hypnotic complexity of brains in present day species, and lasting traditions in the design and control of animals' mechanical analogies (robots), still lead many to perceive bodies in the neuromuscular species as being in service to the goals of their controllers (brains), but in fact the two are of a piece, and work together to the same ends. We hypothesise that this would have been more apparent than now at a time closer to the evolutionary introduction of neuromuscular systems, and introduce our new software framework for the evolution of virtual neuromuscular swimmers, which may be used to study artificial parallels to those distant origins. We begin with a demonstration of the technical innovations which we required in order to simulate soft-bodied swimmers in two-dimensional particle-based fluids, and then proceed to a description of our new concept for mapping arbitrary neural networks to arbitrary body morphologies.

Abstract: Large Language Models (LLMs) trained on code are revolutionizing the software development process. Increasingly, code LLMs are being integrated into software development environments to improve the productivity of human programmers, and LLM-based agents are beginning to show promise for handling complex tasks autonomously. Realizing the full potential of code LLMs requires a wide range of capabilities, including code generation, fixing bugs, explaining and documenting code, maintaining repositories, and more. In this work, we introduce the Granite series of decoder-only code models for code generative tasks, trained with code written in 116 programming languages. The Granite Code models family consists of models ranging in size from 3 to 34 billion parameters, suitable for applications ranging from complex application modernization tasks to on-device memory-constrained use cases. Evaluation on a comprehensive set of tasks demonstrates that Granite Code models consistently reaches state-of-the-art performance among available open-source code LLMs. The Granite Code model family was optimized for enterprise software development workflows and performs well across a range of coding tasks (e.g. code generation, fixing and explanation), making it a versatile all around code model. Abstract: An emerging research program on population and geographic range dynamics of Australia's mammals illustrates an approach to better understand and respond to geographic range collapses of threatened wildlife in general. In 1788, Europeans colonized an Australia with a diverse and largely endemic mammal fauna, where many species that are now extinct or threatened were common and widespread. Subsequent population declines, range collapses and extinctions were caused by introduced predators and herbivores, altered land use, modified fire regimes and the synergies between these threats. Declines in population and range size continue for many Australian mammals despite legislative protection and conservation interventions. Here, we propose an approach that integrates museum data and other historical records into process-explicit macroecological models to better resolve mammal distributions and abundances as they were at European arrival. We then illustrate how this integrative approach can identify the likely synergistic mechanisms causing mammal population declines across these and other landscapes. This emerging research approach, undertaken with fine temporal and spatial resolution, but at large geographic scales, will provide valuable insights into the different pathways to, and drivers of, extinction. Such insights may, in turn, underpin conservation strategies based on a process-explicit understanding of population decline and range collapse under alternative scenarios of impending climate and environmental change. Abstract: The latest generation of high-resolution spectrograph instruments on 10m-class telescopes continue to pursue challenging science cases. Consequently, ever more precise calibration methods are necessary to enable trail-blazing science methodology. We present the High-resolution Infrared SPectrograph for Exoplanet Characterization (HISPEC) Calibration Unit (CAL), designed to facilitate challenging science cases such as Doppler imaging of exoplanet atmospheres, precision radial velocity, and high-contrast high-resolution spectroscopy of nearby exoplanets. CAL builds upon the heritage from the pathfinder instrument Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer (KPIC) and utilizes four near-infrared (NIR) light sources encoded with wavelength information that are coupled into single-mode fibers. They can be used synchronously during science observations or asynchronously during daytime calibrations. A hollow cathode lamp (HCL) and a series of gas absorption cells provide absolute calibration from 0.98 {\mu}m to 2.5 {\mu}m. A laser frequency comb (LFC) provides stable, time-independent wavelength information during observation and CAL implements a lower finesse astro-etalon as a backup for the LFC. Design lessons from instrumentation like HISPEC will serve to inform the requirements for similar instruments for the ELTs in the future., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures

6. Interactive Visualization of Time-Varying Flow Fields Using Particle Tracing Neural Networks

Abstract: In this paper, we present a comprehensive evaluation to establish a robust and efficient framework for Lagrangian-based particle tracing using deep neural networks (DNNs). Han et al. (2021) first proposed a DNN-based approach to learn Lagrangian representations and demonstrated accurate particle tracing for an analytic 2D flow field. In this paper, we extend and build upon this prior work in significant ways. First, we evaluate the performance of DNN models to accurately trace particles in various settings, including 2D and 3D time-varying flow fields, flow fields from multiple applications, flow fields with varying complexity, as well as structured and unstructured input data. Second, we conduct an empirical study to inform best practices with respect to particle tracing model architectures, activation functions, and training data structures. Third, we conduct a comparative evaluation of prior techniques that employ flow maps as input for exploratory flow visualization. Specifically, we compare our extended model against its predecessor by Han et al. (2021), as well as the conventional approach that uses triangulation and Barycentric coordinate interpolation. Finally, we consider the integration and adaptation of our particle tracing model with different viewers. We provide an interactive web-based visualization interface by leveraging the efficiencies of our framework, and perform high-fidelity interactive visualization by integrating it with an OSPRay-based viewer. Overall, our experiments demonstrate that using a trained DNN model to predict new particle trajectories requires a low memory footprint and results in rapid inference. Following best practices for large 3D datasets, our deep learning approach using GPUs for inference is shown to require approximately 46 times less memory while being more than 400 times faster than the conventional methods., Comment: Accepted by Pacific Vis 2024

7. Slip Detection and Surface Prediction Through Bio-Inspired Tactile Feedback

Abstract: High resolution tactile sensing has great potential in autonomous mobile robotics, particularly for legged robots. One particular area where it has significant promise is the traversal of challenging, varied terrain. Depending on whether an environment is slippery, soft, hard or dry, a robot must adapt its method of locomotion accordingly. Currently many multi-legged robots, such as Boston Dynamic's Spot robot, have preset gaits for different surface types, but struggle over terrains where the surface type changes frequently. Being able to automatically detect changes within an environment would allow a robot to autonomously adjust its method of locomotion to better suit conditions, without requiring a human user to manually set the change in surface type. In this paper we report on the first detailed investigation of the properties of a particular bio-inspired tactile sensor, the TacTip, to test its suitability for this kind of automatic detection of surface conditions. We explored different processing techniques and a regression model, using a custom made rig for data collection to determine how a robot could sense directional and general force on the sensor in a variety of conditions. This allowed us to successfully demonstrate how the sensor can be used to distinguish between soft, hard, dry and (wet) slippery surfaces. We further explored a neural model to classify specific surface textures. Pin movement (the movement of optical markers within the sensor) was key to sensing this information, and all models relied on some form of temporal information. 8. Identifying factors associated with fast visual field progression in patients with ocular hypertension based on unsupervised machine learning

Abstract: Purpose: To identify ocular hypertension (OHT) subtypes with different trends of visual field (VF) progression based on unsupervised machine learning and to discover factors associated with fast VF progression. Participants: A total of 3133 eyes of 1568 ocular hypertension treatment study (OHTS) participants with at least five follow-up VF tests were included in the study. Methods: We used a latent class mixed model (LCMM) to identify OHT subtypes using standard automated perimetry (SAP) mean deviation (MD) trajectories. We characterized the subtypes based on demographic, clinical, ocular, and VF factors at the baseline. We then identified factors driving fast VF progression using generalized estimating equation (GEE) and justified findings qualitatively and quantitatively. Results: The LCMM model discovered four clusters (subtypes) of eyes with different trajectories of MD worsening. The number of eyes in clusters were 794 (25%), 1675 (54%), 531 (17%) and 133 (4%). We labelled the clusters as Improvers, Stables, Slow progressors, and Fast progressors based on their mean of MD decline, which were 0.08, -0.06, -0.21, and -0.45 dB/year, respectively. Eyes with fast VF progression had higher baseline age, intraocular pressure (IOP), pattern standard deviation (PSD) and refractive error (RE), but lower central corneal thickness (CCT). Fast progression was associated with calcium channel blockers, being male, heart disease history, diabetes history, African American race, stroke history, and migraine headaches.

11. Estimating and using information in inverse problems

Abstract: In inverse problems, one attempts to infer spatially variable functions from indirect measurements of a system. To practitioners of inverse problems, the concept of "information" is familiar when discussing key questions such as which parts of the function can be inferred accurately and which cannot. For example, it is generally understood that we can identify system parameters accurately only close to detectors, or along ray paths between sources and detectors, because we have "the most information" for these places. Although referenced in many publications, the "information" that is invoked in such contexts is not a well understood and clearly defined quantity. Herein, we present a definition of information density that is based on the variance of coefficients as derived from a Bayesian reformulation of the inverse problem. We then discuss three areas in which this information density can be useful in practical algorithms for the solution of inverse problems, and illustrate the usefulness in one of these areas -- how to choose the discretization mesh for the function to be reconstructed -- using numerical experiments.

12. Fiber Uncertainty Visualization for Bivariate Data With Parametric and Nonparametric Noise Models

Abstract: Visualization and analysis of multivariate data and their uncertainty are top research challenges in data visualization. Constructing fiber surfaces is a popular technique for multivariate data visualization that generalizes the idea of level-set visualization for univariate data to multivariate data. In this paper, we present a statistical framework to quantify positional probabilities of fibers extracted from uncertain bivariate fields. Specifically, we extend the state-of-the-art Gaussian models of uncertainty for bivariate data to other parametric distributions (e.g., uniform and Epanechnikov) and more general nonparametric probability distributions (e.g., histograms and kernel density estimation) and derive corresponding spatial probabilities of fibers. In our proposed framework, we leverage Green's theorem for closed-form computation of fiber probabilities when bivariate data are assumed to have independent parametric and nonparametric noise. Additionally, we present a nonparametric approach combined with numerical integration to study the positional probability of fibers when bivariate data are assumed to have correlated noise. For uncertainty analysis, we visualize the derived probability volumes for fibers via volume rendering and extracting level sets based on probability thresholds. 13. Accelerated Probabilistic Marching Cubes by Deep Learning for Time-Varying Scalar Ensembles

Abstract: Visualizing the uncertainty of ensemble simulations is challenging due to the large size and multivariate and temporal features of ensemble data sets. One popular approach to studying the uncertainty of ensembles is analyzing the positional uncertainty of the level sets. Probabilistic marching cubes is a technique that performs Monte Carlo sampling of multivariate Gaussian noise distributions for positional uncertainty visualization of level sets. However, the technique suffers from high computational time, making interactive visualization and analysis impossible to achieve. This paper introduces a deep-learning-based approach to learning the level-set uncertainty for two-dimensional ensemble data with a multivariate Gaussian noise assumption. We train the model using the first few time steps from time-varying ensemble data in our workflow. We demonstrate that our trained model accurately infers uncertainty in level sets for new time steps and is up to 170X faster than that of the original probabilistic model with serial computation and 10X faster than that of the original parallel computation., Comment: 5 pages, IEEE Vis 2022 Short Paper

Abstract: Liger is a next-generation near-infrared imager and integral field spectrograph (IFS) planned for the W.M. Keck Observatory. Liger is designed to take advantage of improved adaptive optics (AO) from the Keck All-Sky Precision Adaptive Optics (KAPA) upgrade currently underway. Liger operates at 0.84-2.45 $\mu$m with spectral resolving powers of R$\sim$4,000-10,000. Liger makes use of a sequential imager and spectrograph design allowing for simultaneous observations. There are two spectrograph modes: a lenslet with high spatial sampling of 14 and 31 mas, and a slicer with 75 and 150 mas sampling with an expanded field of view. Two pick-off mirrors near the imager detector direct light to these two IFS channels. We present the design and structural analysis for the imager detector and IFS pick-off mirror mounting assembly that will be used to align and maintain stability throughout its operation. A piezoelectric actuator will be used to step through $\rm3\,mm$ of travel during alignment of the instrument to determine the optimal focus for both the detector and pick-off mirrors which will be locked in place during normal operation. We will demonstrate that the design can withstand the required gravitational and shipping loads and can be aligned within the positioning tolerances for the optics., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

Abstract: Liger is an adaptive optics (AO) fed imager and integral field spectrograph (IFS) designed to take advantage of the Keck All-sky Precision Adaptive-optics (KAPA) upgrade for the W.M. Keck Observatory. We present the design and analysis of the imager optical assembly including the spectrograph Re-Imaging Optics (RIO) which transfers the beam path from the imager focal plane to the IFS slicer module and lenslet array. Each imager component and the first two RIO mechanisms are assembled and individually aligned on the same optical plate. Baffling suppresses background radiation and scattered light, and a pupil viewing camera allows the imager detector to focus on an image of the telescope pupil. The optical plate mounts on an adapter frame for alignment of the overall system. Abstract: Liger is a second generation near-infrared imager and integral field spectrograph (IFS) for the W. M. Keck Observatory that will utilize the capabilities of the Keck All-sky Precision Adaptive-optics (KAPA) system. Liger operates at a wavelength range of 0.81 {\mu}m - 2.45 {\mu}m and utilizes a slicer and a lenslet array IFS with varying spatial plate scales and fields of view resulting in hundreds of modes available to the astronomer. Because of the high level of complexity in the raw data formats for the slicer and lenslet IFS modes, Liger must be designed in conjunction with a Data Reduction System (DRS) which will reduce data from the instrument in real-time and deliver science-ready data products to the observer. The DRS will reduce raw imager and IFS frames from the readout system and provide 2D and 3D data products via custom quick-look visualization tools suited to the presentation of IFS data. The DRS will provide the reduced data to the Keck Observatory Archive (KOA) and will be available to astronomers for offline post-processing of observer data. 17. Rapid gain and loss of predator recognition by an evolutionarily naïve lizard

Abstract: The introduction of mammalian predators often results in loss of native biodiversity due to naiveté of native prey to novel predators. In New Zealand, an island system with virtually no native mammalian predators, introduced mammalian predators threaten a large proportion of the native fauna. A critical step in adapting to introduced predators is the ability to recognize and respond to a novel predation threat. Whether New Zealand's lizards can do this has received little attention. We compared the basking behaviour of native McCann's skinks (Oligosoma maccanni) when exposed to a live cat (Felis catus), cat body odour, a model raptor (representing a coevolved predator) or procedural controls. We inferred predator recognition from reductions in individual basking and higher selection for basking sites with greater refuge availability. We tested these behavioural responses for two skink populations: one from an area with high abundance of mammalian predators including feral cats and the other from a fenced conservation reserve where predators have been excluded for over 10 years (3–4 skink generations). Skinks from the high-predator population reduced basking when exposed to cat and raptor cues, whereas skinks from the predator-free population did not. These results suggest that within approximately 150 years of exposure to novel predators, McCann's skinks might be able to recognize the threat posed by invasive mammals. However, they also demonstrate that predator recognition and antipredator behaviours may not necessarily be retained once gained. The rapid loss of basking-related antipredator behaviours might reflect the high fitness costs of reduced basking for this species. Our results indicate that the behavioural response of skinks is flexible and that skinks may maximize individual fitness by balancing the risk of predation with the costs of antipredator behaviours

Abstract: The InfraRed Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) is the first-light client instrument for the Narrow Field Infrared Adaptive Optics System (NFIRAOS) on the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). Now approaching the end of its final design phase, we provide an overview of the instrument control software. The design is challenging since IRIS has interfaces with many systems at different stages of development (e.g., NFIRAOS, telescope control system, observatory sequencers), and will be built using the newly-developed TMT Common Software (CSW), which provides framework code (Java/Scala), and services (e.g., commands, telemetry). Lower-level software will be written in a combination of Java and C/C++ to communicate with hardware, such as motion controllers and infrared detectors. Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate how firms can use brand experience to generate brand loyalty. Methodology: case studies and literature review Findings: The findings in this paper support the findings in previous research that brand loyalty is driven by brand experience, and that brand personality can function as a mediator between them. The main themes that are considered important concerning how companies use a brand experience are emotional bond, attitudinal influences and brand personality. Managerial implications: The paper can provide firms with the insight that if they can manage to create and use a positive brand experience, it can have a significant effect on brand loyalty. Abstract: Context. Invasive predators are a key threat to biodiversity worldwide. In Australia, feral cats are likely to be responsible for many extinctions of native mammal species in the south and centre of the continent. Aims. Here we examine the effect of feral cats on native rodent populations in the second of two translocation experiments. Methods. In a wild-to-wild translocation, we introduced pale field rats, Rattus tunneyi, whose populations are declining in the wild, into two pairs of enclosures where accessibility by feral cats was manipulated. Key results. Individual rats translocated into enclosures accessible to cats were rapidly extirpated after cats were first detected visiting the enclosures. Rats in the enclosure not exposed to cats were 6.2 times more likely to survive than those exposed to cats. Two individual cats were responsible for the deaths of all but 1 of 18 cat-accessible rats. Rats in the site with denser ground cover persisted better than in the site with more open cover. Conclusions. These results are consistent with our previous study of a different native rat species in the same experimental setup, and provide further evidence that, even at low densities, feral cats can drive local populations of small mammals to extinction.

Abstract: PurposeTo investigate differences across the visual field (VF) in the rate of glaucomatous progression, the likelihood of defect in four disease severity cross-sections, and comparisons of subgroups in each of between 12 demographic, comorbid, and clinical variables.MethodsTwo long-term glaucoma clinical trials used Humphrey Field Analyzer 24-2 VFs to calculate pointwise deviations from age-matched normal controls. Slopes of glaucomatous progression over time were calculated per participant using linear mixed models. Pointwise differences between subgroups in slopes and cross-sectional categories were tested, adjusting for multiple comparisons using false discovery rate (FDR) and Q values.ResultsPointwise data were available for 1118 patients who had 15,073 VFs. On average, defects were seen at all VF points. Of the 12 variables, six had average pointwise slopes where Subgroup 1 had significantly faster progression than Subgroup 2 at all or many of the 52 VF points: participants who were older (≥65 vs. younger), 52/52; were male, 13/52; had diabetes, 29/52; had hypertension, 46/52; had a larger cup-to-disc ratio (≥0.7), 36/52; or had larger differences in absolute mean deviation (MD) between eyes (>3 dB), 52/52. Cross-sectional patterns at MD severity of -12 to -6.1 dB showed strong midline effects for gender and other patterns for hypertension, cup-to-disc ratio, absolute difference in MD between eyes, and disc notching.ConclusionsThe approach used provides new longitudinal and cross-sectional insights into variation across the VF associated with demographic, comorbid, and clinical variables.Translational relevanceThis exploration and characterization of variable effects in the setting of pointwise VF testing may enable clinicians to anticipate patterns of VF loss based on demographic, comorbid, and clinical associations.

Abstract: Microscale thermophoresis (MST), and the closely related Temperature Related Intensity Change (TRIC), are synonyms for a recently developed measurement technique in the field of biophysics to quantify biomolecular interactions, using the (capillary-based) NanoTemper Monolith and (multiwell plate-based) Dianthus instruments. Although this technique has been extensively used within the scientific community due to its low sample consumption, ease of use, and ubiquitous applicability, MST/TRIC has not enjoyed the unambiguous acceptance from biophysicists afforded to other biophysical techniques like isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) or surface plasmon resonance (SPR). This might be attributed to several facts, e.g., that various (not fully understood) effects are contributing to the signal, that the technique is licensed to only a single instrument developer, NanoTemper Technology, and that its reliability and reproducibility have never been tested independently and systematically. Thus, a working group of ARBRE-MOBIEU has set up a benchmark study on MST/TRIC to assess this technique as a method to characterize biomolecular interactions. Here we present the results of this study involving 32 scientific groups within Europe and two groups from the US, carrying out experiments on 40 Monolith instruments, employing a standard operation procedure and centrally prepared samples. A protein-small molecule interaction, a newly developed protein-protein interaction system and a pure dye were used as test systems. We characterized the instrument properties and evaluated instrument performance, reproducibility, the effect of different analysis tools, the influence of the experimenter during data analysis, and thus the overall reliability of this method.

23. Exploratory Lagrangian-Based Particle Tracing Using Deep Learning

Abstract: Time-varying vector fields produced by computational fluid dynamics simulations are often prohibitively large and pose challenges for accurate interactive analysis and exploration. To address these challenges, reduced Lagrangian representations have been increasingly researched as a means to improve scientific time-varying vector field exploration capabilities. This paper presents a novel deep neural network-based particle tracing method to explore time-varying vector fields represented by Lagrangian flow maps. In our workflow, in situ processing is first utilized to extract Lagrangian flow maps, and deep neural networks then use the extracted data to learn flow field behavior. Using a trained model to predict new particle trajectories offers a fixed small memory footprint and fast inference. To demonstrate and evaluate the proposed method, we perform an in-depth study of performance using a well-known analytical data set, the Double Gyre. Our study considers two flow map extraction strategies as well as the impact of the number of training samples and integration durations on efficacy, evaluates multiple sampling options for training and testing and informs hyperparameter settings. Overall, we find our method requires a fixed memory footprint of 10.5 MB to encode a Lagrangian representation of a time-varying vector field while maintaining accuracy. For post hoc analysis, loading the trained model costs only two seconds, significantly reducing the burden of I/O when reading data for visualization. Moreover, our parallel implementation can infer one hundred locations for each of two thousand new pathlines across the entire temporal resolution in 1.3 seconds using one NVIDIA Titan RTX GPU., Comment: The paper has been accepted to publish by Journal of Flow Visualization and Image Processing

Abstract: The InfraRed Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) is a first-light instrument for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) that will be used to sample the corrected adaptive optics field by the Narrow-Field Infrared Adaptive Optics System (NFIRAOS) with a near-infrared (0.8 - 2.4 $\mu$m) imaging camera and integral field spectrograph. To better understand IRIS science specifications we use the IRIS data simulator to characterize relative photometric precision and accuracy across the IRIS imaging camera 34"x34" field of view. Because the Point Spread Function (PSF) varies due to the effects of anisoplanatism, we use the Anisoplanatic and Instrumental Reconstruction of Off-axis PSFs for AO (AIROPA) software package to conduct photometric measurements on simulated frames using PSF-fitting as the PSF varies in single-source, binary, and crowded field use cases. We report photometric performance of the imaging camera as a function of the instrumental noise properties including dark current and read noise. Abstract: Background: The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic significantly affected management of cardiovascular disease around the world. The effect of the pandemic on volume of cardiovascular diagnostic procedures is not known. Objectives: This study sought to evaluate the effects of the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiovascular diagnostic procedures and safety practices in Asia. Methods: The International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey to assess changes in cardiovascular procedure volume and safety practices caused by COVID-19. Testing volumes were reported for March 2020 and April 2020 and were compared to those from March 2019. Data from 180 centers across 33 Asian countries were grouped into 4 subregions for comparison. Results: Procedure volumes decreased by 47% from March 2019 to March 2020, showing recovery from March 2020 to April 2020 in Eastern Asia, particularly in China. The majority of centers cancelled outpatient activities and increased time per study. Practice changes included implementing physical distancing and restricting visitors. Although COVID testing was not commonly performed, it was conducted in one-third of facilities in Eastern Asia. The most severe reductions in procedure volumes were observed in lower-income countries, where volumes decreased 81% from March 2019 to April 2020. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic in Asia caused significant reductions in cardiovascular diagnostic procedures, particularly in low-income countries. Further studies on effects of COVID-19 on cardiovascular outcomes and changes in care delivery are warranted.

The Rag guanosine triphosphatases (GTPases) recruit the master kinase mTORC1 to lysosomes to regulate cell growth and proliferation in response to amino acid availability. The nucleotide state of Rag heterodimers is critical for their association with mTORC1. Our cryo–electron microscopy structure of RagA/RagC in complex with mTORC1 shows the details of RagA/RagC binding to the RAPTOR subunit of mTORC1 and explains why only the RagAGTP/RagCGDPnucleotide state binds mTORC1. Previous kinetic studies suggested that GTP binding to one Rag locks the heterodimer to prevent GTP binding to the other. Our crystal structures and dynamics of RagA/RagC show the mechanism for this locking and explain how oncogenic hotspot mutations disrupt this process. In contrast to allosteric activation by RHEB, Rag heterodimer binding does not change mTORC1 conformation and activates mTORC1 by targeting it to lysosomes.

Abstract: Marching squares (MS) and marching cubes (MC) are widely used algorithms for level-set visualization of scientific data. In this paper, we address the challenge of uncertainty visualization of the topology cases of the MS and MC algorithms for uncertain scalar field data sampled on a uniform grid. The visualization of the MS and MC topology cases for uncertain data is challenging due to their exponential nature and the possibility of multiple topology cases per cell of a grid. We propose the topology case count and entropy-based techniques for quantifying uncertainty in the topology cases of the MS and MC algorithms when noise in data is modeled with probability distributions. We demonstrate the applicability of our techniques for independent and correlated uncertainty assumptions. We visualize the quantified topological uncertainty via color mapping proportional to uncertainty, as well as with interactive probability queries in the MS case and entropy isosurfaces in the MC case. We demonstrate the utility of our uncertainty quantification framework in identifying the isovalues exhibiting relatively high topological uncertainty. We illustrate the effectiveness of our techniques via results on synthetic, simulation, and hixel datasets.

Abstract: Analyzing the effects of ocean eddies is important in oceanology for gaining insights into transport of energy and biogeochemical particles. We present an application of statistical visualization algorithms for the analysis of the Red Sea eddy simulation ensemble. Specifically, we demonstrate the applications of statistical volume rendering and statistical Morse complex summary maps to a velocity magnitude field for studying the eddy positions in the flow dataset. In statistical volume rendering, we model per-voxel data uncertainty using noise models, such as parametric and nonparametric, and study the propagation of uncertainty into the volume rendering pipeline. In the statistical Morse complex summary maps, we derive histograms charactering uncertainty of gradient flow destinations to understand Morse complex topological variations across the ensemble. We demonstrate the utility of our statistical visualizations for an effective analysis of the potential eddy positions and their spatial uncertainty.

Abstract: IRIS (Infrared Imaging Spectrograph) is the near-infrared (0.84 to 2.4 micron) diffraction-limited imager and Integral Field Spectrograph (IFS) designed for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) and the Narrow-Field Infrared Adaptive Optics System ( NFIRAOS ). The imager will have a 34 arcsec x 34 arcsec field of view with 4 milliarcseconds (mas) pixels. The IFS consists of a lenslet array and slicer, enabling four plate scales from 4 mas to 50 mas, with multiple gratings and filters. We will report the progress on the development of the IRIS Data Reduction System ( DRS ) in the final design phase. The IRIS DRS is being developed in Python with the software architecture based on the James Webb Space Telescope science calibration pipeline. We are developing a library of algorithms as individual Python classes that can be configured independently and bundled into pipelines. We will interface this with the observatory software to run online during observations and we will release the package publicly for scientists to develop custom analyses. It also includes a C library for readout processing to be used for both in real-time processing (e.g., up-the-ramp, MCDS) as well the ability for astronomers to use for offline reduction. Lastly, we will also discuss the development of the IRIS simulation packages that simulate raw spectra and image readout-data from the Hawaii-4RG detectors, which helps in developing reduction algorithms during this design phase.

Abstract: The InfraRed Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) is a first-light instrument for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) that will be used to sample the corrected adaptive optics field by the Narrow-Field Infrared Adaptive Optics System (NFIRAOS) with a near-infrared (0.8 - 2.4 µm) imaging camera and integral field spectrograph. To better understand IRIS science specifications we use the IRIS data simulator to characterize relative photometric precision and accuracy across the IRIS imaging camera 34”x34” field of view. Because the Point Spread Function (PSF) varies due to the effects of anisoplanatism, we use the Anisoplanatic and Instrumental Reconstruction of Off-axis PSFs for AO (AIROPA) software package to conduct photometric measurements on simulated frames using PSF-fitting as the PSF varies in single-source, binary, and crowded field use cases. We report photometric performance of the imaging camera as a function of the instrumental noise properties including dark current and read noise. Using the same methods, we conduct comparisons of photometric performance with reconstructed PSFs, in order to test the veracity of the current PSF-Reconstruction algorithms for IRIS/TMT.

Abstract: The Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer (KPIC) is a purpose-built instrument to demonstrate new tech- nological and instrumental concepts initially developed for the exoplanet direct imaging field. Located downstream of the current Keck II adaptive optic system, KPIC contains a fiber injection unit (FIU) capable of combining the high-contrast imaging capability of the adaptive optic system with the high dispersion spectroscopy capability of the current Keck high resolution infrared spectrograph (NIRSPEC). Deployed at Keck in September 2018, this instrument has already been used to acquire high resolution spectra (R < 35, 000) of multiple targets of interest. In the near term, it will be used to spectrally characterize known directly imaged exoplanets and low-mass brown dwarf companions visible in the northern hemisphere with a spectral resolution high enough to enable spin and planetary radial velocity measurements as well as Doppler imaging of atmospheric weather phenomena. Here we present the design of the FIU, the unique calibration procedures needed to operate a single-mode fiber instrument and the system performance.

34. Exploring learning needs for general practice based pharmacist: Are behavioural and influencing skills needed?

Abstract: Background: Embedding pharmacists in general practice has been shown to create cost efficiencies, improve patient care and free general practitioner capacity. Consequently, there is a drive to recruit additional pharmacists to work within general practices. However, equipping pharmacists with behaviour and influencing skills may further optimise their impact. Key elements which may enhance behaviour and influencing skills include self-efficacy and resilience. Objective: This study aimed to: 1) Assess general practice pharmacists’ self-efficacy and resilience. 2) Explore differences primarily between pharmacists reporting lower and higher self-efficacy, secondarily for those reporting lower and higher scores for resilience. Methods: All 159 NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde general practice pharmacists were invited to complete an online survey in May 2019. The survey captured anonymised data covering: demographics; professional experience; qualifications, prescribing status and preferred learning styles. Unconscious learning needs for behavioural and influencing skills were assessed using validated tools: the new general self-efficacy scale (GSES) and short general resilience scale (GRIT). Participants’ responses were differentiated by the lowest quartile and higher quartiles of GSES and GRIT scores, and analysed to identify differences. Results: The survey was completed by 57% (91/159) of eligible pharmacists; mean age 38 (range 24-60) years; 91% were of white ethnicity and 89% female. The median time qualified was 14 (1-38) years and 3 (1-22) years working in general practices. Overall pharmacists scored well on the GSES, mean 25 (SD 3; 95%CI 24.4-25.6), and GRIT, mean 30 (SD 4; 95%CI 29.6-30.4), out of a maximum 32 and 40 respectively. A significant positive correlation between GSES and GRIT scores was found (Pearson’s r=0.284, p=0.006). Abstract: New algorithmic and hardware developments over the past two decades have enabled interactive ray tracing of small to modest sized scenes, and are finding growing popularity in scientific visualization and games. However, interactive ray tracing has not been as widely explored in the context of production film rendering, where challenges due to the complexity of the models and, from a practical standpoint, their unavailability to the wider research community, have posed significant challenges. The recent release of the Disney Moana Island Scene has made one such model available to the community for experimentation. In this paper, we detail the challenges posed by this scene to an interactive ray tracer, and the solutions we have employed and developed to enable interactive path tracing of the scene with full geometric and shading detail, with the goal of providing insight and guidance to other researchers.

36. Data-Driven Space-Filling Curves

Abstract: We propose a data-driven space-filling curve method for 2D and 3D visualization. Our flexible curve traverses the data elements in the spatial domain in a way that the resulting linearization better preserves features in space compared to existing methods. We achieve such data coherency by calculating a Hamiltonian path that approximately minimizes an objective function that describes the similarity of data values and location coherency in a neighborhood. Our extended variant even supports multiscale data via quadtrees and octrees. Our method is useful in many areas of visualization, including multivariate or comparative visualization, ensemble visualization of 2D and 3D data on regular grids, or multiscale visual analysis of particle simulations. The effectiveness of our method is evaluated with numerical comparisons to existing techniques and through examples of ensemble and multivariate datasets.

Abstract: We present dw2, a flexible and easy-to-use software infrastructure for interactive rendering of large tiled display walls. Our library represents the tiled display wall as a single virtual screen through a display "service", which renderers connect to and send image tiles to be displayed, either from an on-site or remote cluster. Abstract: We present a nonparametric statistical framework for the quantification, analysis, and propagation of data uncertainty in direct volume rendering (DVR). The state-of-the-art statistical DVR framework allows for preserving the transfer function (TF) of the ground truth function when visualizing uncertain data; however, the existing framework is restricted to parametric models of uncertainty. In this paper, we address the limitations of the existing DVR framework by extending the DVR framework for nonparametric distributions. We exploit the quantile interpolation technique to derive probability distributions representing uncertainty in viewing-ray sample intensities in closed form, which allows for accurate and efficient computation. We evaluate our proposed nonparametric statistical models through qualitative and quantitative comparisons with the mean-field and parametric statistical models, such as uniform and Gaussian, as well as Gaussian mixtures. In addition, we present an extension of the state-of-the-art rendering parametric framework to 2D TFs for improved DVR classifications. Abstract: Drivers of Late Quaternary megafaunal extinctions are relevant to modern conservation policy in a world of growing human population density, climate change, and faunal decline. Traditional debates tend toward global solutions, blaming either dramatic climate change or dispersals of Homo sapiens to new regions. Inherent limitations to archaeological and paleontological data sets often require reliance on scant, poorly resolved lines of evidence. However, recent developments in scientific technologies allow for more local, context-specific approaches. In the present article, we highlight how developments in five such methodologies (radiocarbon approaches, stable isotope analysis, ancient DNA, ancient proteomics, microscopy) have helped drive detailed analysis of specific megafaunal species, their particular ecological settings, and responses to new competitors or predators, climate change, and other external phenomena. The detailed case studies of faunal community composition, extinction chronologies, and demographic trends enabled by these methods examine megafaunal extinctions at scales appropriate for practical understanding of threats against particular species in their habitats today.

Abstract: Growing climate change challenges and increasingly strict sustainability standards have led to a significant growth in the need for building refurbishment projects which are essentially focused on retrofitting in order to make them low carbon, energy efficient and environmentally friendly. The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) suggested that Building Information Modelling (BIM) should be used to achieve sustainability requirements during refurbishment projects as a correspondence to the National Audit Office (NAO) sustainability report. BIM is now widely advocated as the preferred tool for the management and co-ordination of design and construction data using object- oriented principles. The successful integration of environmental assessment into BIM for the whole of the construction lifecycle has not yet been achieved. The potential for using BIM in refurbishment projects specifically for achieving and managing sustainability requirements has not been yet critically reviewed or put into practice. This paper focuses on the use of BIM sustainability design tools in refurbishment projects, to achieve energy efficient buildings and achieve sustainability criteria for refurbishing non-domestic buildings. A critical lens is cast on the current literature in the domains of sustainable designs and the associated implications of the sustainability decision-support tools in BIM. The research also reviews the practicality of the existing sustainability decision-support tools that are currently used to assist with achieving environmental scheme certifications such as BREEAM and LEED for refurbishment projects.

Abstract: In the last 30 years, islands and fenced exclosures free of introduced predators (collectively, havens) have become an increasingly used option for protecting Australian mammals imperiled by predation by introduced cats (Felis catus) and foxes (Vulpes vulpes). However, Australia's network of havens is not expanding in a manner that maximizes representation of all predator-susceptible taxa, because of continued emphasis on already-represented taxa. Future additions to the haven network will improve representation of mammals most efficiently if they fill gaps in under-represented predator-susceptible taxa, particularly rodents. A systematic approach to expansion could protect at least one population of every Australian predator-susceptible threatened mammal taxon by the addition of 12 new havens to the current network. Were the current haven network to be doubled in number in a systematic manner, it could protect three populations of every Australian predator-susceptible threatened mammal taxon.

Abstract: We present a general high-performance technique for ray tracing generalized tube primitives. Our technique efficiently supports tube primitives with fixed and varying radii, general acyclic graph structures with bifurcations, and correct transparency with interior surface removal. Such tube primitives are widely used in scientific visualization to represent diffusion tensor imaging tractographies, neuron morphologies, and scalar or vector fields of 3D flow. We implement our approach within the OSPRay ray tracing framework, and evaluate it on a range of interactive visualization use cases of fixed- and varying-radius streamlines, pathlines, complex neuron morphologies, and brain tractographies. Our proposed approach provides interactive, high-quality rendering, with low memory overhead.

45. Evaluation of discharge prescriptions for secondary prevention in patients with acute coronary syndromes in Iraq

Abstract: Background: Optimal prescribing of secondary prevention medications after acute coronary syndrome (ACS) events has been shown to reduce morbidity and mortality. However, it is unknown whether these medications are optimally prescribed at discharge from acute care in Iraq. Objective: To evaluate whether patients with ACS received optimal secondary prevention medications: antiplatelets, statins, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin II receptor blockers (ACEI/ARBs), and beta-blockers at discharge from a cardiology unit, and to assess whether statins, ACEI/ARBs and beta-blockers were prescribed at target doses based on the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology (AHA/ACC) guidelines. Methods: Observational retrospective cross-sectional study of patients with ACS admitted to a hospital in Baghdad and survived to discharge between May 2016 and January 2017. Patient-level data and secondary prevention medications at discharge were extracted from routine medical records. Optimal dosing was defined as ≥75%, moderate dosing as 50–74%, and low dosing as <50% of the target dose. Results: 45.6% (200/439) of eligible patients were included in the study who were aged 25 to 90 years (mean 57.8 years) with 78.0% (156/200) being male. Of those included, 84.5% had a myocardial infarction and 15.5% unstable angina, and the length of hospital stay ranged from 1 to 29 days (median 4 days). In total, 53.5% of patients were prescribed all five secondary prevention medications at discharge, and after accounting for contraindications, 60.0% were treated according to AHA/ACC guidelines. The prescription rate of dual antiplatelet therapy, statins, ACEI/ARBs and beta-blockers was 92.5%, 94.5%, 69.5% and 87.0% respectively. Abstract: Morse complexes are gradient-based topological descriptors with close connections to Morse theory. They are widely applicable in scientific visualization as they serve as important abstractions for gaining insights into the topology of scalar fields. Noise inherent to scalar field data due to acquisitions and processing, however, limits our understanding of the Morse complexes as structural abstractions. We, therefore, explore uncertainty visualization of an ensemble of 2D Morse complexes that arise from scalar fields coupled with data uncertainty. We propose statistical summary maps as new entities for capturing structural variations and visualizing positional uncertainties of Morse complexes in ensembles. Specifically, we introduce two types of statistical summary maps -- the Probabilistic Map and the Survival Map -- to characterize the uncertain behaviors of local extrema and local gradient flows, respectively. We demonstrate the utility of our proposed approach using synthetic and real-world datasets.

47. Spectral Visualization Sharpening

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a perceptually-guided visualization sharpening technique. We analyze the spectral behavior of an established comprehensive perceptual model to arrive at our approximated model based on an adapted weighting of the bandpass images from a Gaussian pyramid. The main benefit of this approximated model is its controllability and predictability for sharpening color-mapped visualizations. Our method can be integrated into any visualization tool as it adopts generic image-based post-processing, and it is intuitive and easy to use as viewing distance is the only parameter. 48. “Awe No Please Love Us”: Exploring L2 Teachers and Learners’ Perceptions of Online Intercultural (Im)politeness

Abstract: Based on Kecskés’s (2014) intercultural pragmatics model, this study focuses on L2 teacher and learner perceptions of how conventionalized impoliteness formulae and implicational impoliteness (Culpeper, 2011) are shaped, negotiated, and produced interculturally on a social networking site (SNS), Instagram. In addition, the research sought to understand participants’ perceptions of the potential teachability of (im)politeness using extracts from Instagram. Teachability here related to both the pedagogical potential of these materials and their appropriateness for a formal instructional setting. The findings of the study suggest that participants view impoliteness language as characteristic of online platforms and that the featured topic also played a strong role in whether an instance was viewed as impolite; however, a metapragmatic intervention included in the interviews suggests that participants can become more aware of the different ways in which (im)politeness can be produced or perceived by users of a lingua franca, when prompted to reflect on linguistic choices. As for the potential teachability of impoliteness in a formal educational setting, participants were divided. The reasons that they give for supporting or rejecting the idea of social media texts as a means of teaching impoliteness point to some of the possible challenges teacher educators and program developers might face in integrating intercultural politeness.

Abstract: PurposeTo evaluate the effectiveness and safety of oral memantine as a potential neuroprotective agent in open-angle glaucoma (OAG) at risk for progression.DesignTwo randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, multicenter, 48-month studies identically designed, initiated 1 year apart, and completed in 2006. Protocol amendments included a 1-year extension (first study) and change in primary endpoint and analysis (second study).ParticipantsPatients (2298 total) with bilateral OAG; glaucomatous optic disc damage and visual field loss in 1 eye; glaucomatous optic disc damage and/or visual field loss in the contralateral eye (at screening), topically treated or untreated intraocular pressure (IOP) of 21 mmHg or less (at baseline); and at risk of glaucomatous progression (per prespecified criteria).MethodsPatients were randomized 3:2:2 to receive memantine 20 mg, memantine 10 mg, or placebo tablets daily. Glaucomatous progression was assessed in the intent-to-treat population by full-threshold standard automated perimetry (SAP), frequency doubling technology (FDT), and stereoscopic optic disc photographs, standardized by quality control assessment at centralized reading centers. Safety evaluations included adverse events (AEs), best-corrected visual acuity, biomicroscopy, IOP, and ophthalmoscopy. Efficacy data from each study were analyzed per protocol. Pooled analyses of efficacy and safety data were also performed.Main outcome measuresThe predefined primary efficacy measure was glaucomatous visual field progression, as measured by SAP. Additional efficacy measures included glaucomatous progression of visual field (FDT) and optic nerve damage (stereoscopic optic disc photographs).ResultsThe proportion of patients who completed the studies was similar among groups (80%-83%). Compared with placebo, daily treatment with memantine 10 mg or 20 mg for 48 months did not delay glaucomatous progression significantly in the individual studies and pooled analyses

Abstract: The Arizona Robotic Telescope Network (ARTN) project is a long term effort to develop a system of telescopes to carry out a flexible program of PI observing, survey projects, and time domain astrophysics including monitoring, rapid response, and transient/target-of-opportunity followup. Steward Observatory operates and shares in several 1-3m class telescopes with quality sites and instrumentation, largely operated in classical modes. Science programs suited to these telescopes are limited by scheduling flexibility and people-power of available observers. Our goal is to adapt these facilities for multiple co-existing queued programs, interrupt capability, remote/robotic operation, and delivery of reduced data. In the long term, planning for the LSST era, we envision an automated system coordinating across multiple telescopes and sites, where alerts can trigger followup, classification, and triggering of further observations if required, such as followup imaging that can trigger spectroscopy. We are updating telescope control systems and software to implement this system in stages, beginning with the Kuiper 61'' and Vatican Observatory 1.8-m telescopes. The Kuiper 61'' and its Mont4K camera can now be controlled and queue-scheduled by the RTS2 observatory control software, and operated from a remote room at Steward.
