2. 3D deposition patterns of deuterium retention and impurities in the COMPASS divertor : a data-driven root cause analysis and prediction approach

Abstract: Divertor tiles from the COMPASS tokamak have been examined with ion beam analysis for the determination of deuterium retention and co-deposits. A novel approach was used to draw 2D deuterium retention maps at different depths and correlated to the concentrations of other elements: boron, carbon, oxygen and metals. This approach, which employs all three spatial dimensions, revealed that the deuterium retention pattern is not toroidally symmetric at different depths while the overall deuterium pattern is toroidally symmetric. Analysis of visible-light camera records disclosed that parts of the divertor were not wetted by plasma. The radial profile of deuterium in both wetted and non-wetted ( "shadowed ") divertor regions was compared to strike point positions, angle of incidence, electron temperature T-e, parallel heat flux Q(par) and ion saturation current Isat in order to find the influence of these parameters on deuterium retention. There are certain series of consecutive shots for which correlations between deuterium retention and separate plasma parameters (T-e, I-sat, Q(par)) are high. Combining the three parameters in a linear model or a power law model enabled reconstruction of the radial deuterium retention pattern. After fitting the model to one third of the data points, the deuterium retention for shadowed tiles was reproduced at the other two thirds of the data points within 20% deviation. This study shows the need for detailed tile analysis in three dimensions, the great benefits of broad statistical analysis in solving challenges in fusion, and motivates the investigation of COMPASS tiles after dismantling., QC 20220627

Abstract: Within the EUROfusion MST1 work package, a series of experiments has been conducted on AUG and TCV devices to disentangle the role of plasma fueling and plasma shape for the onset of small ELM regimes. On both devices, small ELM regimes with high confinement are achieved if and only if two conditions are fulfilled at the same time. Firstly, the plasma density at the separatrix must be large enough (ne,sep/nG ∼ 0.3), leading to a pressure profile flattening at the separatrix, which stabilizes type-I ELMs. Secondly, the magnetic configuration has to be close to a double null (DN), leading to a reduction of the magnetic shear in the extreme vicinity of the separatrix. As a consequence, its stabilizing effect on ballooning modes is weakened.

Abstract: This contribution aims to improve existing scalings of the L-mode power decay length λqomp, especially for plasma configurations with strike points at the ITER-relevant location - closed vertical divertor targets. We propose 13 new λqomp scalings based on data from the tokamaks JET, EAST, MAST, Alcator C-mod and COMPASS, and validate them against the output of the 2D turbulence code HESEL. The analysis covers 500 divertor heat flux profiles (obtained by probes or IR cameras), measured in L-mode discharges with varying 12 global plasma parameters (all well predictable). We find that the two previously published scalings (Eich 2013 J. Nucl. Mat. 438 S72) and (Scarabosio 2013 J. Nucl. Mat. 438 S426), which were based on outer target data from AUG and JET, describe the JET, C-mod and COMPASS profiles well. This holds not only at the outer horizontal and vertical targets, but surprisingly also at the inner vertical targets. In contrast, EAST, HESEL and especially MAST data are poorly described by these two scalings. We therefore derive 13 new scalings, which account for 85-92 % of the measured λqomp variability across all five tokamaks. Although each of the scalings is based on a different parameter combination, their predictions for the ITER and COMPASS-Upgrade tokamaks are very similar. Just before the L-H transition in the ITER baseline scenario, the presented scalings predict values λqomp = 3.0 ± 0.5 mm. For the COMPASS-Upgrade tokamak, all the scalings predict λqomp = 2.1 ± 0.5 mm with a single exception of the scaling based on the stored plasma energy which predicts only 1.2 mm for both tokamaks. We encourage the reader to use as many of these scalings as possible, depending on available data. In attached plasma and using significant assumptions, our results imply steady-state surface-perpendicular heat flux around 10 MW/m2 for ITER, and 20 MW/m

Abstract: The plasma diagnostic and control (D&C) system for a future tokamak demonstration fusion reactor (DEMO) will have to provide reliable operation near technical and physics limits, while its front-end components will be subject to strong adverse effects within the nuclear and high temperature plasma environment. The ongoing developments for the ITER D&C system represent an important starting point for progressing towards DEMO. Requirements for detailed exploration of physics are however pushing the ITER diagnostic design towards using sophisticated methods and aiming for large spatial coverage and high signal intensities, so that many front-end components have to be mounted in forward positions. In many cases this results in a rapid aging of diagnostic components, so that additional measures like protection shutters, plasma based mirror cleaning or modular approaches for frequent maintenance and exchange are being developed. Under the even stronger fluences of plasma particles, neutron/gamma and radiation loads on DEMO, durable and reliable signals for plasma control can only be obtained by selecting diagnostic methods with regard to their robustness, and retracting vulnerable front-end components into protected locations. Based on this approach, an initial DEMO D&C concept is presented, which covers all major control issues by signals to be derived from at least two different diagnostic methods (risk mitigation).

Abstract: The plasma diagnostic and control (D&C) system for a future tokamak demonstration fusion reactor (DEMO) will have to provide reliable operation near technical and physics limits, while its front-end components will be subject to strong adverse effects within the nuclear and high temperature plasma environment. The ongoing developments for the ITER D&C system represent an important starting point for progressing towards DEMO. Requirements for detailed exploration of physics are however pushing the ITER diagnostic design towards using sophisticated methods and aiming for large spatial coverage and high signal intensities, so that many front-end components have to be mounted in forward positions. In many cases this results in a rapid aging of diagnostic components, so that additional measures like protection shutters, plasma based mirror cleaning or modular approaches for frequent maintenance and exchange are being developed. Under the even stronger fluences of plasma particles, neutron/gamma and radiation loads on DEMO, durable and reliable signals for plasma control can only be obtained by selecting diagnostic methods with regard to their robustness, and retracting vulnerable front-end components into protected locations. Based on this approach, an initial DEMO D&C concept is presented, which covers all major control issues by signals to be derived from at least two different diagnostic methods (risk mitigation).

Abstract: Within the EUROfusion MST1 work package, a series of experiments has been conducted on AUG and TCV devices to disentangle the role of plasma fueling and plasma shape for the onset of small ELM regimes. On both devices, small ELM regimes with high confinement are achieved if and only if two conditions are fulfilled at the same time. Firstly, the plasma density at the separatrix must be large enough (ne,sep/nG ~ 0.3), leading to a pressure profile flattening at the separatrix, which stabilizes type-I ELMs. Secondly, the magnetic configuration has to be close to a double null (DN), leading to a reduction of the magnetic shear in the extreme vicinity of the separatrix. As a consequence, its stabilizing effect on ballooning modes is weakened.

Abstract: First systematic measurements of pedestal structure during Ohmic and NBI-assisted Type I ELMy H-modes were performed on the COMPASS tokamak in two dedicated experimental campaigns during 2015 and 2016. By adjusting the NBI heating and a toroidal magnetic field, the electron pedestal temperature was increased from 200 eV up to 300 eV, which allowed reaching pedestal collisionality nu(ped)* < 1 at q(95) similar to 3. COMPASS has approached conditions for the Identity experiment done at JET & DIII-D, complementing the range of scanned rho(ped)*. The pedestal pressure was successfully reproduced by the EPED model. Abstract: A new technique for fitting the full radial profiles of electron density and temperature obtained by the Thomson scattering diagnostic in H-mode discharges on the COMPASS tokamak is described. The technique combines the conventionally used modified hyperbolic tangent function for the edge transport barrier (pedestal) fitting and a modification of a Gaussian function for fitting the core plasma. Low number of parameters of this combined function and their straightforward interpretability and controllability provide a robust method for obtaining physically reasonable profile fits. Deconvolution with the diagnostic instrument function is applied on the profile fit, taking into account the dependence on the actual magnetic configuration., QC 20161118

Abstract: An extensive (INTAS) research programme started in 2002 to investigate the correlations between, on the one hand, the occurrence of transport barriers and improved confinement in the medium-size tokamaks TEXTOR and T-10 and on the smaller tokamaks FT-2, TUMAN-3M and CASTOR, and on the other hand, electric fields, modified magnetic shear and electrostatic and magnetic turbulence using advanced diagnostics with high spatial and temporal resolution, and various active means to externally control plasma transport. It also requires one to characterize fluctuations of various important plasma parameters inside and outside transport barriers (TBs) and pedestal regions with high spatial and temporal resolution using advanced diagnostics, and to elucidate the role of turbulence driving and damping mechanisms, including the role of the plasma edge properties. Furthermore, one needs to determine the cross-field transport from the measurements and compare this with available theoretical models. This has been done in a strongly coordinated way, exploiting the complementarity of TEXTOR and T-10 and the backup potential of the three other tokamaks, which together have all the relevant experimental tools and theoretical expertise. Physical mechanisms of several TBs have been studied: electron internal transport barriers in T-10 and TEXTOR, ergodization-induced TB in TEXTOR, TB in ohmic discharges in TUMAN-3M, periodic bias-induced TBs in CASTOR. Geodesic acoustic modes (GAM) have been investigated in T-10, TEXTOR and TUMAN-3M. Core turbulence has been characterized in T-10, and small-scale turbulence has been revealed in FT-2. © 2007 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Abstract: In this paper, the propagation of turbulent events along radial and poloidal probe arrays in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of the tokamak CASTOR [M. Hron, Czech. J. Phys. 49, 181 (1999)] is observed using a novel correlation technique. The typical turbulent structures appear as dipoles on the floating potential signals and as positive bursts on the density. It is found that both dipoles and density bursts propagate over long radial distances in the SOL while propagating poloidally. A comparison of the measured velocities of the potential and density fluctuations shows that the density structures move radially faster than the potential ones. This allows us to understand how the density is convected by the turbulence. The density moves radially along the potential valleys created by the poloidal dipoles without modifying them. In the framework of an interchange turbulence, this property indicates that charge exchange collisions with neutrals in the SOL of CASTOR lead to a high viscosity that damps the zonal flows. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: We describe experiments with a biased electrode inserted into the scrape-off layer (SOL) of the CASTOR tokamak. The resulting radial and poloidal electric field and plasma density modification are measured by means of Langmuir probe arrays with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Poloidally and radially localized stationary structures of the electric field (convective cells) are identified and a related significant modification of the particle transport in the SOL is observed. © 2005 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Abstract: A novel approach to the direct measurement of the plasma potential in magnetized plasmas, using the so-called "ball-pen probe", was recently tested in the CASTOR tokamak. Comparison with the standard technique of plasma potential measurement using the emissive probe is reported. It is found that the plasma potential determined by the emissive probe is systematically lower than that measured by the ball-pen probe. The difference is of the of the of kT e/e. A possible reason of this difference is the space charge occurring in the proximity of the emissive probe.

Abstract: The poloidal distribution of turbulence in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of the CASTOR tokamak is studied by means of a ring of 32 electric probes covering the whole perimeter of the poloidal cross section. Analysis of floating potential fluctuations in a SOL created in the top part of the machine by shifting the plasma downwards reveals a dominant periodic structure that propagates poloidally in the direction of the Er × B drift. Its poloidal mode number is found to be equal to the local safety factor q. Correlation and pulse propagation analyses show that this high m mode is a signature of a single long flute-like structure that is aligned with the magnetic field and snakes around the torus several times before terminating on the limiter.

Abstract: In this paper we present the first experimental results obtained in the CASTOR tokamak by using a segmented biasing electrode, which is composed of five segments radially separated by 3 mm. The basic idea of choosing such configuration was to allow a spatial distribution of the biasing voltage in the radial direction. In the described experiments, one or more selected segments can be biased up to +300V, while the remaining segments can be either grounded or floating. Two rake probes measure the edge radial profiles of the floating potential and the ion saturation current at the top and low field side of the torus. A Gundestrup probe, located at the top of the torus, measures the parallel and perpendicular Mach numbers together with the local electron temperature and density. A clear and reproducible transition to a regime with improved particle confinement is routinely observed, if the electrode is inserted deep enough into the plasma (r/a ≈ 0.5) and if one or two segments are biased up to +250V (the remaining segments are floating). The steepening of the radial profiles of the plasma density and potential demonstrate the formation of a transport barrier just inside the last closed flux surface. Fast relaxations of the edge profiles, with a frequency of about 10 kHz or higher, are observed when the value of the average radial electric field within the barrier reaches values of about 20 kV/m and the density gradient increases up to a factor 3 with respect to the ohmic phase. A detailed analysis of the spatial-temporal behavior of these relaxations is presented.

Abstract: We have developed tunnel probes for localized measurements of the electron and ion temperature in the edge plasma region of smaller tokamaks and stellarators. A normal tunnel probe for Te measurements consists of a metallic tunnel of 5 mm diameter and 5 mm length, with the axis parallel to the magnetic field. One side is open, the other side is closed by a metallic backplate, isolated from the tunnel. If both electrodes are biased negatively, ions flow into the office, and their current is distributed between the tunnel and the backplate. The ratio of the two ion currents is a function of T e. With an additional diaphragm in front of the orifice, the probe becomes ion sensitive, since the electrons are prevented from the tunnel because of their smaller gyroradius, but ions can still reach it. In this way, the perpendicular ion temperature can be derived. By segmenting the tunnel axially into two parts, also an approximate measure for the parallel ion temperature can be found.

Abstract: Localised ion temperature measurements can only be performed with special electric probes where the electron component of the current is kept off from the collector. In a strong magnetic field the effect can be utilised that the electron gyro-radius is much smaller than that of the ions. This method was developed by Katsumata and Okazaki (Japan J. Appl. Phys. 6, 123 (1967)). We have used a so-called tunnel probe (which consists of a conductive tunnel, terminated by an isolated back plate) by adding a diaphragm in front. Thereby the tunnel is prevented from incident electrons at any potential of both electrodes. By sweeping the potential across the tunnel, the perpendicular ion temperature can be inferred. By segmenting the tunnel axially in two parts also the parallel ion temperature can be determined. When the electrodes are biased to ion saturation, the ratio between the ion currents, which reach the first and the second segment, respectively, is a measure for the parallel ion temperature. The dependence of the ratio of the currents has to be determined by a PIC simulation.

Abstract: A novel probe and approach to the direct measurements of the plasma potential in a strong magnetic field is suggested. The principle of this method is to reduce the electron saturation current to the same magnitude as that of the ion saturation current. In this case, the floating potential of the probe becomes identical to the plasma potential. This goal is attained by a shield, which screens off an adjustable part of the electron current from the probe collector due to the much smaller gyro-radius of the electrons. First systematic measurements have been performed in the CASTOR tokamak.

Abstract: The plasma potential and its fluctuations were measured by electron emissive probes in the edge plasma regions of tokamaks. Fusion experiments were conducted on ISTTOK tokamak, Portugal and CASTOR tokamak, Czech Republic. In ISTTOK, three emissive probes were used. In CASTOR, two emissive probes were used which could be radially shifted. The advantage of a sufficiently emissive probe is that it allows plasma potential and its fluctuations to be measured directly.

Abstract: Experiments in the tokamaks TEXTOR, CASTOR, T-10 and ISTTOK, as well as in the reversed field pinch RFX have provided new and complementary evidence on the physics of the universal mechanism of E × B velocity shear stabilization of turbulence, concomitant transport barrier formation and radial conductivity by using various edge biasing techniques. In TEXTOR the causality between transport reduction and induced electric fields in the edge has been for the first time clearly demonstrated. The high electric field gradients have been identified as the cause for the quenching of turbulent cells. A quantitative analysis of the measured transport reduction is in good agreement with theoretical predictions. The scaling of plasma turbulence suppression with velocity shear has been established, revealing the density-potential cross-phase as a key element. Reduction in poloidal electric field, temperature, and density fluctuations across the shear layer lead to a reduction of the anomalous conducted and convected heat fluxes resulting in an energy transport barrier that is measured directly. In CASTOR the biasing electrode is placed at the separatrix in a non-intrusive configuration which has demonstrated strongly sheared electric fields and consequent improvement of the global particle confinement, as predicted by theory. The impact of sheared E × B flow on edge turbulent structures has been measured directly using a comprehensive set of electrostatic probe arrays as well as emissive probes. Measurements with a full poloidal Langmuir probe array have revealed quasi-coherent electrostatic waves in the SOL with a dominant mode number equal to the edge safety factor. In T-10 edge biasing is clearly improving the global performance of ECR heated discharges. Reflectometry and heavy ion beam probe measurements show the existence of a narrow plasma layer with strong suppression of turbulence. Abstract: An emissive probe has been used in the edge region of the CASTOR tokamak in order to test the possibility of direct measurements of the plasma potential. The difference between the floating potential of a cold probe and that of an emissive probe has been found to be approximately 1.3 times the electron temperature, which is less than predicted by the probe theory. Several possible reasons to explain this discrepancy are offered, such as secondary electron emission, uncertainties in the ion temperature, different collecting areas for electrons and ions, etc. The possible impact of a space charge formed by the emitted electrons is also discussed.

Abstract: A two-dimensional array of electric probes placed on the poloidal plane has been inserted in the edge region of the CASTOR tokamak. The floating potential patterns measured by the probes show the presence of localized structures which are convected poloidally by the E × B plasma motion. The lifetime of these structures has been found to be large enough to allow them to complete several full poloidal rotations before dying away. Furthermore, the eddy turnover time of the plasma around the potential blobs is smaller than the lifetime, so that these structures can be called coherent.

Abstract: A fundamental role in fusion plasmas transport processes is played by electrostatic turbulence. In the edge region of toroidal experiments, the use of Langmuir probes allows a detailed investigation of the temporal and spatial structure of this turbulence. In recent years, the issue of self-similarity and its violation, termed intermittency, has received substantial attention due to its implications in terms of universality of turbulence behaviour. In particular, a general trend has been identified, by which the probability distribution function (PDF) of the fluctuations is almost gaussian at large scales, and develops strong tails at small scales. this behaviour, which looks independent from the magnetic configuration of the plasma, is due to strong events which occur at small scales more frequently than in the gaussian case. In the RFX reversed field pinch experiment, by the use of specific detection algorithms and of conditional averaging, it has been possible to associate the intermittent events to coherent structures present in the turbulence. It has also been demonstrated that these structures play an important role in determining the overall turbulence-driven transport. In the CASTOR tokamak, a similar kind of behaviour is observed. Furthermore, the use of one and two-dimensional arrays of probes has allowed to perform an imaging of the turbulence. This approach has revealed the presence of large scale coherent structures with a very long lifetime.

Abstract: The core Thomson scattering diagnostic (TS) on the COMPASS tokamak was put in operation and reported earlier. Implementation of edge TS, with spatial resolution along the laser beam up to similar to 1/100 of the tokamak minor radius, is presented now. The procedure for spatial calibration and alignment of both core and edge systems is described. Several further upgrades of the TS system, like a triggering unit and piezo motor driven vacuum window shutter, are introduced as well. Abstract: We present a complex data handling system for the COMPASS tokamak, operated by IPP ASCR Prague, Czech Republic [1]. The system, called CDB (Compass DataBase), integrates different data sources as an assortment of data acquisition hardware and software from different vendors is used. Based on widely available open source technologies wherever possible, CDB is vendor and platform independent and it can be easily scaled and distributed. The data is directly stored and retrieved using a standard NAS (Network Attached Storage), hence independent of the particular technology; the description of the data (the metadata) is recorded in a relational database. Database structure is general and enables the inclusion of multi-dimensional data signals in multiple revisions (no data is overwritten). This design is inherently distributed as the work is off-loaded to the clients. Both NAS and database can be implemented and optimized for fast local access as well as secure remote access. CDB is implemented in Python language; bindings for Java, C/C++, IDL and Matlab are provided. Independent data acquisitions systems as well as nodes managed by FireSignal [2] are all integrated using CDB. An automated data post-processing server is a part of CDB. Based on dependency rules, the server executes, in parallel if possible, prescribed post-processing tasks.

Abstract: Experiments in the tokamaks TEXTOR, CASTOR, T-10 and ISTTOK, as well as in the reversed field pinch RFX have provided new and complementary evidence on the physics of the universal mechanism of E x B velocity shear stabilization of turbulence, concomitant transport barrier formation and radial conductivity by using various edge biasing techniques. In TEXTOR the causality between transport reduction and induced electric fields in the edge has been for the first time clearly demonstrated. The high electric field gradients have been identified as the cause for the quenching of turbulent cells. A quantitative analysis of the measured transport reduction is in good agreement with theoretical predictions. The scaling of plasma turbulence suppression with velocity shear has been established, revealing the density-potential cross-phase as a key element. Reduction in poloidal electric field, temperature, and density fluctuations across the shear layer lead to a reduction of the anomalous conducted and convected heat fluxes resulting in an energy transport barrier that is measured directly. In CASTOR the biasing electrode is placed at the separatrix in a non-intrusive configuration which has demonstrated strongly sheared electric fields and consequent improvement of the global particle confinement, as predicted by theory. The impact of sheared E x B flow on edge turbulent structures has been measured directly using a comprehensive set of electrostatic probe arrays as well as emissive probes. Measurements with a full poloidal Langmuir probe array have revealed quasi-coherent electrostatic waves in the SOL with a dominant mode number equal to the edge safety factor. In T-10 edge biasing is clearly improving the global performance of ECR heated discharges. Reflectometry and heavy ion beam probe measurements show the existence of a narrow plasma layer with strong suppression of turbulence.
