We search for super-imposed oscillations linearly or logarithmically spaced in Fourier wavenumbers in Planck and South Pole Telescope (SPT-3G) 2018 temperature and polarization data. The SPT-3G temperature and polarization data provide a new window to test these oscillations at high multipoles beyond the Planck angular resolution and sensitivity. We consider both models with a constant and a Gaussian modulated amplitude, which correspond to three and four additional parameters beyond power-law primordial power spectrum for the templates considered, respectively. We find that each of the four models considered can provide an improved fit to Planck data, consistently with previous findings, and to SPT-3G data, always compared to $\Lambda$CDM. For a constant amplitude of the superimposed oscillations, we find tighter constraints on the amplitude of the oscillations from the combined Planck/SPT-3G data set than in each individual data sets. When the ranges of parameters which provide a better fit to Planck and SPT-3G data overlap, as in the case of Gaussian modulated oscillations, we find a larger $\Delta \chi^2$ - $- 17 \, (-16)$ for logarithmic (linear) oscillations - in a combined Planck/SPT-3G data set than in each individual data sets. Using Gaussian Processes we perform a thorough, non-parametric consistency test of the $\Lambda$CDM model when confronted with state-of-the-art TT, TE, and EE measurements of the anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background by the Planck, ACT, and SPT collaborations. Using $\Lambda$CDM's best-fit predictions to the TTTEEE data from Planck, we find no statistically significant deviations when looking for signatures in the residuals across the different datasets. The results of SPT are in good agreement with the $\Lambda$CDM best-fit predictions to the Planck data, while the results of ACT are only marginally consistent. However, when using the best-fit predictions to CamSpec -- a recent reanalysis of the Planck data -- as the mean function, we find larger discrepancies between the datasets. Our analysis also reveals an interesting feature in the polarisation (EE) measurements from the CamSpec analysis, which could be explained by a slight underestimation of the covariance matrix. Interestingly, the disagreement between CamSpec and Planck/ACT is mainly visible in the residuals of the TT spectrum, the latter favoring a scale-invariant tilt $n_s\simeq1$, which is consistent with previous findings from parametric analyses. We also report some features in the EE measurements captured both by ACT and SPT which are independent of the chosen mean function and could be hinting towards a common physical origin. For completeness, we repeat our analysis using the best-fit spectra to ACT+WMAP as the mean function. Finally, we test the internal consistency of the Planck data alone by studying the high and low-$\ell$ ranges separately, finding no discrepancy between small and large angular scales., Comment: 28 pages, 17 figures. This anomalous effect can be also mimicked by a spatially closed Universe with a very low value of Hubble constant that consequently aggravates the already existing discordance between cosmological observations. We reconstruct a signature from the early Universe, a particular form of oscillation in the primordial spectrum of quantum fluctuations with a characteristic frequency, that solves all these anomalies. Interestingly, we find this form of the primordial spectrum resolves or substantially subsides, various tensions in the standard model of cosmology in fitting different observations, namely Planck CMB, clustering and weak lensing shear measurements from several large scale structure surveys, local measurements of Hubble constant, and recently estimated age of the Universe from globular clusters. We support our findings phenomenologically, by proposing an analytical form of the primordial spectrum with similar features and demonstrate that it agrees remarkably well with various combinations of cosmological observations. In this paper we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, the $\sigma_8$--$S_8$ tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the $5.0\,\sigma$ tension between the {\it Planck} CMB estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the {\it Planck} CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $\Omega_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($\sigma_8,f\sigma_8$). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. While the simplest inflationary models predict the primordial perturbations to be near scale-invariant, the primordial power spectrum (PPS) can exhibit oscillatory features in many physically well-motivated models. We search for hints of such features via free-form reconstructions of the PPS based on \textit{Planck} 2018 CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies. In order to robustly invert the oscillatory integrals and handle noisy unbinned data, we draw inspiration from image analysis techniques. In previous works, the Richardson-Lucy deconvolution algorithm for deblurring images has been modified for reconstructing PPS from the CMB temperature angular power spectrum. We extensively develop the methodology by including CMB polarization and introducing two new regularization techniques, also inspired by image analysis and adapted for our cosmological context. Regularization is essential for improving the fit to the temperature and polarization channels (TT, TE and EE) simultaneously without sacrificing one for another. The reconstructions we obtain are consistent with previous findings from temperature-only analyses. We evaluate the statistical significance of the oscillatory features in our reconstructions using mock data and find the observations to be consistent with having a featureless PPS. The machinery developed here will be a complimentary tool in the search for features with upcoming CMB surveys. Future Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments will deliver extremely accurate measurements of the E-modes pattern of the CMB polarization field. Given the sharpness of the E-modes transfer functions, such surveys make for a powerful detector of high-frequency signals from primordial features that may be lurking in current data sets. With a handful of toy models that increase the fit to the latest Planck data, but are of marginal statistical significance, we use a state-of-the-art forecast pipeline to illustrate the promising prospects to test primordial features in the next decade. Not only will future experiments allow us to detect such features in data, but they will also be able to discriminate between models and narrow down the physical mechanism originating them with high statistical significance. On the other hand, if the anomalies in the currently measured CMB spectra are just statistical fluctuations, all the current feature best fit candidates will be ruled out. The residuals of the power spectra of WMAP and Planck's cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies data are known to exhibit a few interesting anomalies at different scales with marginal statistical significance. Combining bottom-up and top-down model-building approaches and using a pipeline that efficiently compares model predictions with data, we construct a model of primordial standard clock that is able to link and address the anomalies at both the large and small scales. This model, and its variant, provide some of the best fits to the feature anomalies in CMB. According to Bayes evidences, these models are currently statistically indistinguishable from the Standard Model. We show that the difference between them will soon become statistically significant with various higher quality data on the CMB polarization. We present constraints on inflationary dynamics and features in the primordial power spectrum of scalar perturbations using the Cosmic Microwave Background temperature, polarization data from Planck 2018 data release and updated likelihoods. We constrain the slow-roll dynamics using Hilltop Quartic Potential and Starobinsky $R+R^2$ model in the Einstein frame using the Planck 2018 binned Plik likelihood. Using the Hilltop as base potential we construct Whipped Inflation potential to introduce suppression in the scalar power spectrum at large angular scales. We notice marginal (68% C.L.) preference of suppression from the large scale temperature angular power spectrum. However, large-scale E-mode likelihood, based on high frequency instrument cross spectrum, does not support this suppression and in the combined data the preference towards the suppression becomes negligible. Based on the Hilltop and Starobinsky model we construct the Wiggly Whipped Inflation potentials to introduce oscillatory features along with the suppression. We use unbinned data from the recently released CamSpec v12.5 likelihood which updates Planck 2018 results. We compare the Bayesian evidences of the feature models with their baseline slow-roll potentials. We find that the complete slow-roll baseline potential is moderately preferred against potentials which generate features. Compared to Planck 2015 PlikHM bin1 likelihood, we find that the significance of sharp features has decreased owing to the updates in the data analysis pipeline. In this paper, we use a complete model of classical primordial standard clocks as an example to develop a methodology of directly comparing numerical predictions from complicated multi-field feature models with the Planck data, including the Planck 2018 Plik unbinned likelihood and the statistically most powerful CamSpec 2020 likelihood for temperature and polarization data. As this two-field inflationary model offers a plethora of primordial feature spectra that represent combinations of sharp and resonance feature signals non-trivially distributed over extended cosmological scales, its data comparison has not been satisfactorily addressed by previous attempts using analytical templates. The method of this paper, consisting of numerical prediction, effective parameter construction and nested sampling data comparison, allows us to efficiently explore every possible spectra from the model. We classify the resulting feature candidates in three different frequency ranges. We use the Bayesian evidences to assess the statistical significance of the candidates over the baseline model, taking into account the effect of additional parameters and the look-elsewhere effect. Improved measurement of the Cosmic Microwave Background polarization from Planck allows a detailed study of reionization beyond the average optical depth. The lower value of the optical depth disfavours an early onset and an early completion of reionization in favour of a redsfhit range where different astrophysical probes provide sensible information on the sources of reionization and the status of the intergalactic medium. In this work we extend our previous study in which we constrained reionization by combining three different probes - CMB, UV luminosity density and neutral hydrogen fraction data - in both treatment and data: we first allow variation in the UV source term varying the product of the efficiency of conversion of UV luminosity into ionizing photons and the escape fraction together with the reionization and cosmological parameters, and then we investigate the impact of a less conservative cut for the UV luminosity function. We find that the estimate for the efficiency is consistent within 95% C.L. with the fixed value we considered in our previous results and is mostly constrained by the QHII data. We find that allowing the efficiency to vary does not affect significantly our results for the average optical depth for monotonic reionization histories, recovering $\tau=0.0519_{-0.0008}^{+0.0010}$ at 68% CL , consistent with our previous studies. Using a less conservative cut for the UV luminosity function, we find $\tau=0.0541_{-0.0016}^{+0.0013}$ at 68% CL, due to the faint end of the luminosity function in the data we use, that also prefers a larger contribution from higher redshifts., Comment: 18 pages, 20 figures, updated version to match the published one

We reconstruct the history of reionization using Gaussian process regression. Using the UV luminosity data compilation from Hubble Frontiers Fields we reconstruct the redshift evolution of UV luminosity density and thereby the evolution of the source term in the ionization equation. This model-independent reconstruction rules out single power-law evolution of the luminosity density but supports the logarithmic double power-law parametrization. We obtain reionization history by integrating ionization equations with the reconstructed source term. Using optical depth constraint from Planck Cosmic Microwave Background observation, measurement of UV luminosity function integrated till truncation magnitude of -17 and -15, and derived ionization fraction from high redshift quasar, galaxies and gamma-ray burst observations, we constrain the history of reionization. In the conservative case we find the constraint on the optical depth as $\tau =0.052\pm0.001\pm0.002$ at 68% and 95% confidence intervals. We find the redshift duration between 10% and 90% ionization to be $2.05_{-0.21-0.30}^{+0.11+0.37}$. Longer duration of reionization is supported if UV luminosity density data with truncation magnitude of -15 is used in the joint analysis. Our results point out that even in a conservative reconstruction, a combination of cosmological and astrophysical observations can provide stringent constraints on the epoch of reionization., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures and 1 table

In this paper, we use a complete model of classical primordial standard clocks as an example to develop a methodology of directly comparing numerical predictions from complicated multi-field feature models with the Planck data, including the Planck 2018 Plik unbinned likelihood and the statistically most powerful CamSpec 2020 likelihood for temperature and polarization data. As this two-field inflationary model offers a plethora of primordial feature spectra that represent combinations of sharp and resonance feature signals non-trivially distributed over extended cosmological scales, its data comparison has not been satisfactorily addressed by previous attempts using analytical templates. The method of this paper, consisting of numerical prediction, effective parameter construction and nested sampling data comparison, allows us to efficiently explore every possible spectra from the model. We classify the resulting feature candidates in three different frequency ranges. We use the Bayesian evidences to assess the statistical significance of the candidates over the baseline model, taking into account the effect of additional parameters and the look-elsewhere effect. Primordial black holes (PBHs) generated by gravitational collapse of large primordial overdensities can be a fraction of the observed dark matter. In this paper, we introduce a mechanism to produce a large peak in the primordial power spectrum (PPS) in two-field inflationary models characterized by two stages of inflation based on a large non-canonical kinetic coupling. This mechanism is generic to several two-field inflationary models, due to a temporary tachyonic instability of the isocurvature perturbations at the transition between the two stages of inflation. We numerically compute the primordial perturbations from largest scales to the small scales corresponding to that of PBHs using an extension of BINGO (BI-spectra and Non-Gaussianity Operator). Moreover we numerically compute the stochastic background of gravitational waves (SBGW) produced by second order scalar perturbations within frequencies ranging from nano-Hz to KHz that covers the observational scales corresponding to Pulsar Timing Arrays, Square Kilometer Array to that of Einstein telescope. We provide an update on the constraints on extended reionization histories with the Planck 2018 cosmic microwave background anisotropy data. The Planck 2018 data on large angular scales improve the measurement of the E-mode polarization reionization bump at low multipoles providing the possibility to improve our previous results [1]. Using a minor modification to the original Poly-reion model [2] for the reionization history, we find that the Planck 2018 data significantly improve all our previous results: we find as optical depth of τ=0.0572-0.0075+0.0064 at 68% CL, that early onsets of reionization are strongly disfavoured, i.e. redshift when the reionization begins, zxe=0=18.18-10.89 +1.61 at 68% CL, and that reionization duration (defined between 10% and 99% reionization) is significantly reduced, i.e. ΔzReion=4.59-2.45+1.67 at 68% CL . We explore possible correlations between reionization histories and cosmological parameters, including important extensions beyond ΛCDM . We find that the degeneracy between reionization and scalar spectral index, neutrino mass sum, spatial curvature, dark matter annihilation and other non-standard models are significantly reduced.The reduction of the error bars and the degeneracies, together with the shift towards lower values of the optical depth that we observe in the Poly-reion model are mainly driven by the new low-ℓ polarization likelihood of Planck 2018 baseline based on the HFI data. This is confirmed also by the results derived without this likelihood and the ones with different alternatives to the baseline that are presented for a subset of models. © 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab.

This mechanism is generic to several two-field inflationary models, due to a temporary tachyonic instability of the isocurvature perturbations at the transition between the two stages of inflation. We numerically compute the primordial perturbations from largest scales to the small scales corresponding to that of PBHs using an extension of BINGO (BI-spectra and Non-Gaussianity Operator). Moreover we numerically compute the stochastic background of gravitational waves (SBGW) produced by second order scalar perturbations within frequencies ranging from nano-Hz to KHz that covers the observational scales corresponding to Pulsar Timing Arrays, Square Kilometer Array to that of Einstein telescope. We explore a class of primordial power spectra that can fit the observed anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background well and that predicts a value for the Hubble parameter consistent with the local measurement of $H_0 = 74$ km/s/Mpc. This class of primordial power spectrum consists of a continuous deformation between the best-fit power law primordial power spectrum and the primordial power spectrum derived from the modified Richardson-Lucy deconvolution algorithm applied to the $C_\ell$s of best-fit power law primordial power spectrum. We find that linear interpolation half-way between the power law and modified Richardson-Lucy power spectra fits the Planck data better than the best-fit $\Lambda$CDM by $\Delta\log\mathcal{L} = 2.5$. In effect, this class of deformations of the primordial power spectra offer a new dimension which is correlated with the Hubble parameter. This correlation causes the best-fit value for $H_0$ to shift and the uncertainty to expand to $H_0 = 70.2 \pm 1.2$ km/s/Mpc. When considering the Planck dataset combined with the Cepheid $H_0$ measurement, the best-fit $H_0$ becomes $H_0 = 71.8 \pm 0.9$ km/s/Mpc. We provide an update on the constraints on extended reionization histories with the Planck 2018 cosmic microwave background anisotropy data. The Planck 2018 data on large angular scales improve the measurement of the $E$-mode polarization reionization bump at low multipoles providing the possibility to improve our previous results. Using a minor modification to the original Poly-reion model for the reionization history, we find that the Planck 2018 data significantly improve all our previous results: we find as optical depth of $\tau=0.0572_{-0.0075}^{+0.0064}$ at 68% CL, that early onsets of reionization are strongly disfavoured, i.e. redshift when the reionization begins, $z_{xe=0}=18.18_{-10.89}^{+1.61}$ at 68% CL,and that reionization duration (defined between 10% and 99% reionization) is significantly reduced, i.e. $\Delta_z^{Reion}=4.59_{-2.45}^{+1.67}$ at 68% CL. We explore possible correlations between reionization histories and cosmological parameters, including important extensions beyond $\Lambda$CDM. We find that the degeneracy between reionization and scalar spectral index,neutrino mass sum, spatial curvature, dark matter annihilation and other non-standard models are significantly reduced.The reduction of the error bars and the degeneracies, together with the shift towards lower values of the optical depth that we observe in the Poly-reion model are mainly driven by the new low-$\ell$ polarization likelihood of Planck 2018 baseline based on the HFI data. We investigate the generation of features at large scales in the primordial power spectrum (PPS) when inflation is driven by two scalar fields. In canonical single field models of inflation, these features are often generated due to deviations from the slow-roll regime. While deviations from slow-roll can be naturally achieved in two field models due to a sharp turn in the trajectory in the field space, features at the largest scales of the types suggested by CMB temperature anisotropies are more difficult to achieve in models involving two canonical scalar fields due to the presence of isocurvature fluctuations. We show instead that a coupling between the kinetic terms of the scalar fields can easily produce such features.
