This teaching guide, the third in a five-volume series (see note), concentrates on the CAP (Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor domains) approach for teachers to accomodate handicapped students in vocational classes with focus on health occupations education. Main emphasis is on (1) discussion of CAP functioning as these may affect an educational setting; (2) ways to assess and determine functional and dysfunctional capacities; and (3) prescribing for students with various dysfunctions. The latter section provides lesson plans and task descriptions, e.g., making an occupied bed (for nursing assistants), teaching an auditory learner in the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program to improve study skills, "Assertive Behavior Techniques" for those with affective dysfunctions, or developing answers to "problem questions" during job placement. Subsections also deal with some of the problems instructors of the handicapped encounter and such topics as instructing blind students, job redesign, and setting realistic employment goals. A separate section looks at audiovisuals and instructional materials, while the appendix offers a structured exercise in muscle recognition for physical therapy assistant students. (CP)

Addressed to vocational educators, this booklet discusses topics relating to mental health and understanding emotional disturbance. The following topics are covered: definitions of mental health, normality, and mental illness; signs of possible development of serious emotional problems; the number of people considered emotionally disturbed; treatment for people with emotional problems; the emotionally troubled person in the classroom and what the teacher can do; communication; empathy; constructive use of feedback; barriers to effective communication; job placement considerations; improving mental health; coping with the milder variety of depression; coping with stress; and prevention of mental illness. A brief description of the Mental Health Association in Wisconsin and listings of chapter presidents and addresses, where to get help for emotional problems in Wisconsin, and a bibliography are included. Intended to assist in the vocational education and employment of individuals who are handicapped, this catalog contains descriptions and illustrations of modified tools, equipment, and machinery for use in 38 areas. These use areas are arts, assembly, assessment, automobile repair, benchwork, communication, computer processing, cosmetology, dictation, duplicating and printing, eating, education, electronics, environmental control, food preparation, gardening, health, kitchen work, laundering, listening, machine trades, maintaining balance, mathematics, measuring, mobility, money exchange, packaging, reaching, reading, recreation, safety, sewing, shopping, transportation, typing, work tables, and writing. Each piece of equipment is pictured along with information on how it works, its developer, place of use, field testing regulatory approval, warranty, availability, source, price, and role in helping the handicapped overcome specific problems. Equipment is cross referenced by use and by seven disability categories (hearing impaired, learning disabled, mentally retarded, multiply handicapped, physically handicapped, speech impaired, visually impaired). Appendixes contain information on modifications to accomodate disabled persons at nine different worksites as well as lists of additional available resources, organizations serving the handicapped, postsecondary educational institutions serving the handicapped, relevant classroom materials, and publications and equipment distribution outlets.
