1. Quo vadis, smallholder forest landscape?: An introduction to the LPB-RAP model

Abstract: The impacts of the Anthropocene on climate and biodiversity pose societal and ecological problems that may only be solved by ecosystem restoration. Local to regional actions are required, which need to consider the prevailing present and future conditions of a certain landscape extent. Modeling approaches can be of help to support management efforts and to provide advice to policy making. We present stage one of the LaForeT-PLUC-BE model (Landscape Forestry in the Tropics–PCRaster Land Use Change–Biogeographic & Economic model; in short: LPB) and its thematic expansion module RAP (Restoration Areas Potentials). LPB-RAP is a high-resolution pixel-based scenario tool that relies on a range of explicit land use types (LUTs) to describe various forest types and the environment. It simulates and analyzes future landscape configurations under consideration of climate, population and land use change long-term. Simulated Land Use Land Cover Change (LULCC) builds on dynamic, probabilistic modeling incorporating climatic and anthropogenic determinants as well as restriction parameters to depict a sub-national regional smallholder-dominated forest landscape. The model delivers results for contrasting scenario settings by simulating without and with potential Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) measures. FLR potentials are depicted by up to five RAP-LUTs. The model builds on user-defined scenario inputs, such as the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) and Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP). Model application is here exemplified for the SSP2-RCP4.5 scenario in the time frame 2018–2100 on the hectare scale in annual resolution using Esmeraldas province, Ecuador, as a case study area. 2. Non-linear MHD investigations of high-confinement regimes without type-I ELMs in ASDEX Upgrade and JT-60SA

Abstract: Large edge localised modes (ELMs) would cause an unacceptable reduction of material lifetime in future large tokamaks due to the significant amount of energy expelled from the magnetically confined region towards the plasma facing components. Thoroughly validated modelling of regimes devoid of large ELMs is crucial as it may then provide predictive insights prior to tokamak operation and design. This paper describes recent efforts pursued with the non-linear extended MHD code JOREK in the modelling of three scenarios without large ELMs: quiescent H-mode (QH-mode), quasi-continuous exhaust regime (QCE regime), and the enhanced D-alpha H-mode (EDA H-mode). For each of these regimes, the non-linear dynamics observed in the simulations are detailed and compared to experimental observations of the underlying instabilities of each regime (edge harmonic oscillation for QH-mode, small ELMs for QCE regime, and quasi-coherent mode for EDA H-mode). For QH-mode, the kink-peeling mode is found to govern the dynamics and a transition to a large ELM is obtained above the same density threshold as in the modelled experiment. For the QCE regime and EDA H-mode, resistive peeling–ballooning modes dominate and pedestal fluctuation frequencies correspond well to experimental observations. The dominant mechanisms for the excitation and suppression of these instabilities are presented and their influence on simulation dynamics is shown. Finally, predictive simulations of edge instabilities at different values of plasma resistivity in a 4.60 MA scenario with low edge safety factor in JT-60SA are presented.

Abstract: We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases.

Abstract: The development of small and no-ELM regimes for ITER is a high priority topic due to the risks associated with type-I ELMs. By considering non-linear extended magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak with the JOREK code, we probe a regime that avoids type-I ELMs completely, provided that the separatrix density is high enough. The dynamics of the pedestal in this regime are observed to be qualitatively similar to the so-called quasi-continuous exhaust regime in several ways. Repetitive type-I ELMs are substituted by roughly constant levels of outward transport, caused by peeling-ballooning modes (with dominant ballooning characteristics) which are localised in the last 5% of the confined region (in normalised poloidal flux). The simulated low triangularity plasma transitions to a type-I ELMy H-mode if the separatrix density is sufficiently reduced or if the input heating power is sufficiently increased. The stabilising factors that play a role in the suppression of the small ELMs are also investigated by analysing the simulations, and the importance of including diamagnetic effects in the simulations is highlighted. By considering a scan in the pedestal resistivity and by comparing the poloidal velocity of the modes to theoretical estimates for ideal and resistive modes, we identify the underlying instabilities as resistive peeling-ballooning modes. Decreasing the resistivity below experimentally-relevant conditions (i.e. going towards ideal MHD), the peeling-ballooning modes that constrain the pedestal below the type-I ELM stability boundary display sharply decreasing growth rates.

Realistic ExB and diamagnetic background plasma flows as well as the time dependent bootstrap current evolution are included during the build-up to accurately capture the balance between stabilising and destabilising terms for the edge instabilities. The spatio-temporal structures of the modes and the resulting divertor heat fluxes are compared in detail between spontaneous and triggered ELMs. We observe that the premature excitation of ELMs by means of pellet injection is caused by a helical perturbation described by a toroidal mode number of n=1. In accordance with experimental observations, the pellet-triggered ELMs show reduced thermal energy losses and a narrower divertor wetted area with respect to spontaneous ELMs. The peak divertor energy fluence is seen to decrease when ELMs are triggered by pellets injected earlier during the pedestal build-up.

Abstract: The ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) programme, jointly run with the EUROfusion MST1 task force, continues to significantly enhance the physics base of ITER and DEMO. Here, the full tungsten wall is a key asset for extrapolating to future devices. The high overall heating power, flexible heating mix and comprehensive diagnostic set allows studies ranging from mimicking the scrape-off-layer and divertor conditions of ITER and DEMO at high density to fully noninductive operation (q95 = 5.5, βN ≤ 2.8) at low density. Higher installed electron cyclotron resonance heating power ≤ 6 MW, new diagnostics and improved analysis techniques have further enhanced the capabilities of AUG. Stable high-density H-modes with Psep/R ≤ 11 MW m−1 with fully detached strikepoints have been demonstrated. The ballooning instability close to the separatrix has been identified as a potential cause leading to the H-mode density limit and is also found to play an important role for the access to small edge-localized modes (ELMs). Density limit disruptions have been successfully avoided using a path-oriented approach to disruption handling and progress has been made in understanding the dissipation and avoidance of runaway electron beams. ELM suppression with resonant magnetic perturbations is now routinely achieved reaching transiently HH98(y,2) ≤ 1.1. This gives new insight into the field penetration physics, in particular with respect to plasma flows. Modelling agrees well with plasma response measurements and a helically localised ballooning structure observed prior to the ELM is evidence for the changed edge stability due to the magnetic perturbations. The impact of 3D perturbations on heat load patterns and fast-ion losses have been further elaborated. Progress has also been made in understanding the ELM cycle itself. Abstract: The interaction between Edge-Localized Modes (ELMs) and Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs) is modeled with the magnetohydrodynamic code JOREK using experimental parameters from ASDEX Upgrade discharges. According to the modeling, the ELM mitigation or suppression is optimal when the amplification of both tearing and peeling-kink responses results in a better RMP penetration. The ELM mitigation or suppression is not only due to the reduction of the pressure gradient but predominantly arises from the toroidal coupling between the ELMs and the RMP-induced mode at the plasma edge, forcing the edge modes to saturate at a low level. The bifurcation from ELM mitigation to ELM suppression is observed when the RMP amplitude is increased. ELM mitigation is characterized by rotating modes at the edge, while the mode locking to RMPs is induced by the resonant braking of the electron perpendicular flow in the ELM suppression regime.

Abstract: Recent experiments on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak aim at improving the physics base for ITER andDEMOto aid the machine design and prepare efficient operation. Type I edge localized mode (ELM) mitigation using resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) has been shown at low pedestal collisionality (v.ped 0.4). In contrast to the previous high v. regime, suppression only occurs in a narrow RMP spectral window, indicating a resonant process, and a concomitant confinement drop is observed due to a reduction of pedestal top density and electron temperature. Strong evidence is found for the ion heat flux to be the decisive element for the L.H power threshold. A physics based scaling of the density at which the minimum PLH occurs indicates that ITER could take advantage of it to initiate H-mode at lower density than that of the finalQ = 10 operational point. Core density fluctuation measurements resolved in radius and wave number show that an increase of R/LT e introduced by off-axis electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) mainly increases the large scale fluctuations. The radial variation of the fluctuation level is in agreement with simulations using the GENE code. Fast particles are shown to undergo classical slowing down in the absence of large scale magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) events and for low heating power, but show signs of anomalous radial redistribution at large heating power, consistent with a broadened off-axis neutral beam current drive current profile under these conditions. Neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) suppression experiments using electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) with feedback controlled deposition have allowed to test several control strategies for ITER, including automated control of (3,2) and (2,1) NTMs during a single discharge. Abstract: Forced magnetic reconnection is a topic of common interest in astrophysics, space science, and magnetic fusion research. The tearing mode formation process after sawtooth crashes implies the existence of this type of magnetic reconnection and is investigated in great detail in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. The sawtooth crash provides a fast relaxation of the core plasma temperature and can trigger a tearing mode at a neighbouring resonant surface. It is demonstrated for the first time that the sawtooth crash leads to a dominantly ideal kink mode formation at the resonant surface immediately after the sawtooth crash. Local measurements show that this kink mode transforms into a tearing mode on a much longer timescale ð103s 102sÞ than the sawtooth crash itself ð104sÞ. The ideal kink mode formed after the sawtooth crash provides the driving force for magnetic reconnection and its amplitude is one of the critical parameters for the length of the transition phase from a ideal into an resistive mode. The tearing mode formation process after sawtooth crashes implies the existence of this type of magnetic reconnection and is investigated in great detail in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. The sawtooth crash provides a fast relaxation of the core plasma temperature and can trigger a tearing mode at a neighbouring resonant surface. It is demonstrated for the first time that the sawtooth crash leads to a dominantly ideal kink mode formation at the resonant surface immediately after the sawtooth crash. Local measurements show that this kink mode transforms into a tearing mode on a much longer timescale ð103s 102sÞ than the sawtooth crash itself ð104sÞ. The ideal kink mode formed after the sawtooth crash provides the driving force for magnetic reconnection and its amplitude is one of the critical parameters for the length of the transition phase from a ideal into an resistive mode. With the extended version of HAGIS, losses were simulated and directly compared with experimental loss measurements. The losses’ phase space distribution as well as their ejection signal is consistent with experimental data. Furthermore, it allowed to characterize them as prompt, resonant or stochastic. It was found that especially in multiple mode scenarios (with different mode frequencies), abundant incoherent losses occur in the lower energy range, due to a broad phase-space stochastization. The incoherent higher energetic losses are “prompt”, i.e. their initial energy is too large for confined orbits.

25. Modelling forest growth and finance: often disregarded tools in tropical land management

Abstract: While many studies analyse patterns of tropical land management with a backward-oriented approach that utilises data of the past, we propose to consider future-oriented modelling approaches to find sustainable land-use options. This proposal is illustrated with application examples for advanced growth modelling in tropical forests, a short overview on financial performance analyses for tropical land uses, and the introduction of a new modelling approach. This modelling approach sees tropical land management as a financial portfolio of land-use options. Its advantage is the ability to make transparent effects of financial risk reduction that arise from mixing forestry and agriculture-based land-use options. The approach thus does not analyse land uses as stand-alone options, like most other analyses do. The land-use portfolio modelling shows that sustainable land use may also be financially attractive for farmers, if abandoned farm lands are reforested (with a native tree species in our case) and sustainable management in natural forests is carried out. We conclude that the combination of advanced growth with sound financial modelling may lead to improved bioeconomic models. Developed bioeconomic models are necessary to increase the biological realism and acceptability of the results obtained.

Abstract: Secondary forests are an increasingly important component in the neotropical landscape matrix. As deforestation rates in many Latin American countries continue to be high, secondary forest resources may contribute to timber supply. By using a process-based forest growth model, we studied the prospect of secondary forests in eastern Paraguay for sustainable timber harvesting under different logging and fragmentation scenarios, respectively. The timber yield is low under all scenarios (0.75-1.73 m³ ha-1 per year). Only silvicultural treatments may increase the commercial value of secondary forests. For large landholdings, labour and capital-extensive land use systems such as secondary forest management may be an option to diversify farm income. This particularly holds for Paraguay facing an increasing scarcity of timber resources.&nbsp

Abstract: The ASDEX Upgrade programme is directed towards physics input to critical elements of the ITER design and the preparation of ITER operation, as well as addressing physics issues for a future DEMO design. After the finalization of the tungsten coating of the plasma facing components, the re-availability of all flywheel-generators allowed high-power operation with up to 20 MW heating power at Ip up to 1.2 MA. Implementation of alternative ECRH schemes (140 GHz O2- and X3-mode) facilitated central heating above ne = 1.2 × 1020 m−3 and low q95 operation at Bt = 1.8 T. Central O2-mode heating was successfully used in high P/R discharges with 20 MW total heating power and divertor load control with nitrogen seeding. Improved energy confinement is obtained with nitrogen seeding both for type-I and type-III ELMy conditions. The main contributor is increased plasma temperature, no significant changes in the density profile have been observed. This behaviour may be explained by higher pedestal temperatures caused by ion dilution in combination with a pressure limited pedestal and hollow nitrogen profiles. Core particle transport simulations with gyrokinetic calculations have been benchmarked by dedicated discharges using variations of the ECRH deposition location. The reaction of normalized electron density gradients to variations of temperature gradients and the Te/Ti ratio could be well reproduced. Doppler reflectometry studies at the L–H transition allowed the disentanglement of the interplay between the oscillatory geodesic acoustic modes, turbulent fluctuations and the mean equilibrium E × B flow in the edge negative Er well region just inside the separatrix. Improved pedestal diagnostics revealed also a refined picture of the pedestal transport in the fully developed H-mode type-I ELM cycle. Impurity ion transport turned out to be neoclassical in between ELMs. Electron and energy transport remain anomalous, but exhibit different recovery time scales after an ELM. After

Abstract: It is often observed that large sawteeth trigger the neoclassical tearing mode well below the usual threshold for this instability. At the same time, fast particles in the plasma core stabilize sawteeth and provide these large crashes. The paper presents results of first experiments in ASDEX Upgrade for destabilization of fast particle stabilized sawteeth with electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD). It is shown that moderate ECCD from a single gyrotron is able to destabilize the fast particle stabilized sawteeth. A reduction in sawtooth period by about 40% was achieved in first experiments. These results show that ECCD can be used as a tool for control of sawteeth also in the presence of fast particles.

29. Species-rich but distinct arbuscular mycorrhizal communities in reforestation plots on degraded pastures and in neighboring pristine tropical mountain rain forest

Abstract: For the first time in tropical mountain rain forest, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal richness and community composition was investigated from planted seedlings of Cedrela montana, Heliocarpus americanus, Juglans neotropica and Tabebuia chrysantha in reforestation plots on degraded pastures. A segment of fungal 18S rDNA was sequenced from the mycorrhizas. Sequences were compared with those obtained from mycorrhizas of adult trees of 30 species in the neighboring, pristine tropical mountain rain forest. In total, 193 glomeromycotan sequences were analyzed, 130 of them previously unpublished. Members of Glomeraceae, Acaulosporaceae, Gigasporaceae and Archaeosporales were found in both habitats, with Glomus Group A sequences being by far the most diverse and abundant. Glomus Group A sequence type richness did not appear to differ between the habitats; a large number was observed in both. Glomus Group A sequence type composition, however, was found distinctly different. Seedlings were rarely colonized by fungi of the pristine forest but trapped a number of fungi known from other areas, which were rarely found in the pristine forest.

Abstract: The crash phase of the sawteeth in ASDEX Upgrade tokamak [Herrmann, Fusion Sci. Technol. 44(3), 569 (2003)] is investigated in detail in this paper by means of soft x-ray (SXR) and electron cyclotron emission (ECE) diagnostics. Analysis of precursor and postcursor (1,1) modes shows that the crash does not affect the position of the resonant surface q=1. Our experimental results suggest that sawtooth crash models should contain two ingredients to be consistent with experimental observations: (1) the (1,1) mode structure should survive the crash and (2) the flux changes should be small to preserve the position of the q=1 surface close to its original location. Detailed structure of the reconnection point was investigated with ECE imaging diagnostic. It is shown that reconnection starts locally. The expelled core is hot which is consistent with SXR tomography results. The observed results can be explained in the framework of a stochastic model. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: The montane forests of Ecuador are part of one of the world's hotspots of biodiversity and they also suffer the highest deforestation rate amongst South American countries. The processes that drive the dynamics of these highly diverse ecosystems are poorly understood. This is particularly true for transient dynamics, which are crucial for the protection and sustainable management of such forests. Dynamic simulation models, can be used to anal use the growth of forests, but so far they have been applied mostly to temperate forests and to some few tropical lowland forests. In this study we investigate whether a process-based, individual-oriented simulation model like FORMIND is capable of reproducing the dynamics of tropical montane forests. For this purpose develop a parameterisation for the model and validate the model against field observations of different (structural) patterns. We then analyse the predicted succession dynamics. The model is capable of reproducing the structure and dynamics of mature ridge forest on different levels of complexity. The main results indicate that, in terms of relative abundances of different: species groups and stern size distribution in the tree community, our model predicts the observed patterns in the field. Additional field studies and model modifications are required to simulate the succession processes that follow different types of disturbances. FORMIND is a promising tool for the extrapolation of local measurements and for simulating the dynamics of tropical montane forests. Parameterisations of the model for further forest types within the research area are intended. The model has a number of potential applications, ranging from investigating the impact of (different) natural disturbances on forest structure and tree species diversity to analysing-different potential management strategies
