To mitigate methane emission from urban natural gas distribution systems, it is crucial to understand local leak rates and occurrence rates. To explore urban methane emissions in cities outside the U.S., where significant emissions were found previously, mobile measurements were performed in 12 cities across eight countries. The surveyed cities range from medium size, like Groningen, NL, to large size, like Toronto, CA, and London, UK. Furthermore, this survey spanned across European regions from Barcelona, ES, to Bucharest, RO. The joint analysis of all data allows us to focus on general emission behavior for cities with different infrastructure and environmental conditions. We find that all cities have a spectrum of small, medium, and large methane sources in their domain. The emission rates found follow a heavy-tailed distribution, and the top 10% of emitters account for 60-80% of total emissions, which implies that strategic repair planning could help reduce emissions quickly. Furthermore, we compare our findings with inventory estimates for urban natural gas-related methane emissions from this sector in Europe. While cities with larger reported emissions were found to generally also have larger observed emissions, we find clear discrepancies between observation-based and inventory-based emission estimates for our 12 cities.

Endoscopic resection of superficial neoplasms in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is appropriate if a complete resection can be achieved. However, EMR is ineffective for large, nonpolypoid neoplasms in IBD due to submucosal fibrosis, and no data are available on the efficacy of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD).

There is a paucity of prospective and controlled data on the comparative effectiveness of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) versus surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) in a real-world setting.

Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is the therapy of choice for a variety of malignant and nonmalignant disorders; however, a major constraint to successful BMT is graft versus host disease (GVHD). Skin lesions are the earliest presentation of GVHD. Donor-derived cytotoxic T lymphocytes are the effector cells responsible for lesions in the skin and other tissues. Here we show that most skin-infiltrating lymphocytes, in all forms of GVHD, are memory T cells with a predominance of CD4+ cells in the dermis and CD8+ cells in the epidermis. Relatively little attention has been focused on the adhesive phenotype of keratinocytes in GVHD. In this study, immunohistochemical analyses of skin biopsies from BMT patients with acute or chronic GVHD were conducted, with particular emphasis on antigen-presenting cells (APCs) and on keratinocytes. The distribution of APCs in the epidermis (Langerhans' cells) was investigated. Keratinocytes were analyzed for the expression of human leukocyte antigen DR locus (HLA-DR) and of a novel integrin, alpha10.1.2 beta1, which is detected in the basal layer of normal epidermis. Langerhans' cells were decreased in all grades of acute GVHD, but the epidermal APC network was reconstituted in chronic GVHD. HLA-DR was expressed by keratinocytes in grade 2 and 3 acute GVHD lesions, but not in two of three chronic GVHD cases, and in the regression phase of acute GVHD. Integrin chains alpha10.1.2 and beta1 were detected in the epidermal basal cell layer of most GVHD cases but they were also expressed in suprabasal keratinocytes of both acute and chronic GVHD. This latter finding indicates that a proliferative response uncoupled from differentiation occurs in keratinocytes in the course of GVHD.

Clinical devices used in everyday clinical practice for assessing health status cannot be used underwater, because of a variety of problems related to the liquid environment, its salinity and the hydrostatic working pressure. Thus, underwater medicine is mainly based on the results of a series of 'physiological models' of underwater diving that are considered to be valid surrogate and inferences from the clinical world; this approach, due to the lack of direct physiological measurements in the true environment, induced many drawbacks and/or mistakes in investigating human underwater physiology. Indeed, both processes are intrinsically uncertain and scientifically incorrect. Thus, the transfer to the underwater environment of routine clinical instruments represents a great improvement, in terms of practice of medicine knowledge, just as it is the case of space medicine. This task required the design of novel underwater diagnostic and monitoring instrumentation and the development of ad-hoc support infrastructure. In particular, we developed a minimum set of innovative underwater medical instruments to collect data related to heart rate, cardiac electric activity, cardiac morphology and function, arterial blood pressure and oxygen blood saturation, in addition to environmental information on water temperature and hydrostatic pressure. In the present paper we will briefly describe the devices we designed and manufactured for the underwater assessment of physiological parameters; moreover we report about some important results in terms of advancement of knowledge in underwater physiology, using underwater measurements by novel diagnostic instrumentation. In particular, new acquisitions on blood pressure and cardiac functional responses during different diving activities will be described.

The 10.1.2 MoAb reacts with a novel alpha chain that associates with the beta 1 integrin chain and is widely distributed among epithelial and endothelial cells of human adult and fetal tissues. In the epidermis and in other squamous epithelia, alpha 10.1.2 chains are expressed exclusively in the basal cell layer. Here we describe the immunohistochemical localization of alpha 10.1.2 in human epidermis, in other squamous epithelia, as well as in cultured keratinocytes. alpha 10.1.2 chain localization has also been investigated in a variety of non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions of the skin, the uterine cervix, and the lung. We show that alpha 10.1.2 chains retain their basal keratinocyte localization in hyperplastic skin diseases and in benign tumors of the epidermis and that they are strongly expressed in basal cell carcinomas. In contrast, alpha 10.1.2 expression is decreased in keratinocytes that differentiate in vitro and is lost in epidermal dysplastic conditions, in the invading front of squamous cell carcinomas of the epidermis, in microinvasive cervical cancers, and in well-differentiated squamous lung tumors. These findings indicate that alpha 10.1.2 beta 1 integrin is downregulated during keratinocyte differentiation in vitro and in vivo.
