Bedrock geology from Antarctica remains largely unknown since it is hidden beneath thick ice sheets. Geophysical methods such as gravity and magnetic inverse modelling provide a framework to infer crustal rock properties indirectly in Antarctica. However, due to limited availability of rock samples, validation against direct geological information is challenging. We present a new rock property catalogue containing density and susceptibility measurements on 320 rock samples from northern Victoria Land. This catalogue is used to assess the reliability of local and regional scale inverse results, including a new local high resolution magnetic inversion in the Mesa Range region and a previously published regional scale joint inversion of gravity and magnetic data in northern Victoria Land and the Wilkes Subglacial Basin. We compare our density and susceptibility measurements to global and local measurements from the literature to access the correlation to rock types and geological units. Furthermore, the measured values are compared against inverted values. The close correspondence between inverted and measured rock properties allows us to predict locations of rock types where currently such information is missing. The utility of measured susceptibility and density relationships for interpreting inversion output provides a strong incentive to incorporate local rock samples into geophysical studies of subglacial geology across Antarctica.

In this study, we conduct a comprehensive history matching study for the FluidFlower benchmark model. This benchmark was prepared and organized by the University of Bergen, the University of Stuttgart, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, for promoting understanding of the complex physics of geological carbon storage (GCS) through in-house experiments and numerical simulations. This paper synthesizes the experiences of history matching the benchmark data encountered by the Delft-DARTS and CSIRO participants. History matching is first performed based on a low-dimensional-zonated structured model using a simple Poisson-like solver. The permeability of six facies and two faults is inferred in this stage to match the digitized concentration data. The history matching is then further enhanced to richer spatial and physical models to capture the spatial variation of permeability and buoyancy effects, using an unstructured grid. Efficient adjoint methods are used to evaluate the gradient used in the optimization of data misfits or equivalent Bayesian log-likelihoods. With efficient optimization methods available for both maximum a posteriori model inference and Randomized Maximum Likelihood methods for model uncertainty, we perform history matching using both binary and continuous concentration observations. The results show that the tracer plumes in the enriched model match the experimental plumes more accurately compared with the results from the parsimonious-zonated model. The history matching results based on the concentration observations provide more similar plume shapes compared with the case based on the binary observations. The permeability difference between the model before and after history matching reveals that the tracer plume zone and the high permeable zone are the regions of high sensitivity in terms of data misfit between the model response and observations. The Paleogene outlier at Collier's End, Hertfordshire lies on the northern rim of the London Basin. This small outlier has archaeological and geological significance. Silica-cemented concretions of Hertfordshire Puddingstone lie within a regionally mappable pebble bed. The first discovery of a Roman quarry to recover puddingstone for manufacture of querns was made in the outlier. A rare complete section from the Chalk Group up through the Paleogene was temporarily exposed in 2021 and is recorded here. The Paleogene shows features that may be associated with the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). The chalk in the new exposure is Late Coniacian. This age provides further evidence of relatively deep erosion of the chalk in this area, as erosion of chalk at the crest of a regional dome preceded advances and retreats of the western shore of the Paleogene North Sea. These events may be linked to the early development of the Icelandic mantle plume.

The Transantarctic Mountains (TAM) separate the warmer lithosphere of the Cretaceous-Tertiary West Antarctic rift system and the colder and older provinces of East Antarctica. Low velocity zones beneath the TAM imaged in recent seismological studies have been interpreted as warm low-density mantle material, suggesting a strong contribution of thermal support to the uplift of the TAM. We present new Curie Point Depth (CPD) and geothermal heat flow (GHF) maps of the northern TAM and adjacent Wilkes Subglacial Basin (WSB) based exclusively on high resolution magnetic airborne measurements. We find shallow CPD and high GHF beneath the northern TAM, reinforcing the hypothesis of thermal support of the topography of the mountain range. Additionally, this study demonstrates, that limiting spectral analysis to areas with a high density of aeromagnetic measurements increases the resolution of CPD estimates revealing localized shallow CPD and associated high heat flow in the Central Basin of the WSB and the Rennick Graben. Across the study area the CPD ranges from 15 to 35 km and the GHF values range from 30 to 110 mW/m2. The recovered CPD range is compatible with recent Moho depth estimates, as the CPD predominantly lies within the crust, rather than in the magnetite-poor mantle. GHF estimates, based on the CPD estimates, show a good agreement to sparse in situ GHF measurements and the location of active volcanoes. Comparison to existing continent-wide GHF estimates shows strong differences from magnetically-derived heat flow estimates, while seismologically-derived heat flow estimates show the best agreement to our results.

Environmental risk assessments (ERAs) are required before utilizing exotic arthropods for biological control (BC). Present ERAs focus on exposure analysis (host/prey range) and have resulted in approval of many specialist exotic biological control agents (BCA). In comparison to specialists, generalist arthropod BCAs (GABCAs) have been considered inherently risky and less used in classical biological control. To safely consider exotic GABCAs, an ERA must include methods for the analysis of potential effects. A panel of 47 experts from 14 countries discussed, in six online forums over 12 months, scientific criteria for an ERA for exotic GABCAs. Using four case studies, a three-tiered ERA comprising Scoping, Screening and Definitive Assessments was developed. The ERA is primarily based on expert consultation, with decision processes in each tier that lead to the approval of the petition or the subsequent tier. In the Scoping Assessment, likelihood of establishment (for augmentative BC), and potential effect(s) are qualitatively assessed. If risks are identified, the Screening Assessment is conducted, in which 19 categories of effects (adverse and beneficial) are quantified. If a risk exceeds the proposed risk threshold in any of these categories, the analysis moves to the Definitive Assessment to identify potential non-target species in the respective category(ies). When at least one potential non-target species is at significant risk, long-term and indirect ecosystem risks must be quantified with actual data or the petition for release can be dismissed or withdrawn. The proposed ERA should contribute to the development of safe pathways for the use of low risk GABCAs.

The enormous increase in digital spatial information has led archaeologists all over Europe to rely ever more on digital data to prepare and carry out archaeological research, both in academic and heritage management contexts. Spatial information is increasingly used to guide heritage management policies, from urban design to rural planning and tourism. Furthermore, spatial information is more and more employed to involve the general public, using digital technologies in museums and other places of archaeological interest, but also to involve amateur archaeologists in data collection programmes using crowdsourcing. With this proliferation of data and data use, issues of sustainability of digital data repositories, accessibility and reliability of data, standardization of data formats and management of property rights are currently widely debated inside and outside archaeology. However, they have not yet led to generally accepted practices of data management across or even within European countries. In this paper, we sketch the state-of-the-art of archaeological spatial data management, identify the major problem areas and reflect on potential improvements. We conclude that technical solutions are available, but will need a long-term transnational strategy in order fulfill the promise of open and sustainable spatial archaeological data for all user groups involved.

Data processing frameworks are an essential part of HEP experiments' software stacks. Frameworks provide a means by which code developers can undertake the essential tasks of physics data processing, accessing relevant inputs and storing their outputs, in a coherent way without needing to know the details of other domains. Frameworks provide essential core services for developers and help deliver a configurable working application to the experiments' production systems. Modern HEP processing frameworks are in the process of adapting to a new computing landscape dominated by parallel processing and heterogeneity, which pose many questions regarding enhanced functionality and scaling that must be faced without compromising the maintainability of the code. In this paper we identify a program of work that can help further clarify the key concepts of frameworks for HEP and then spawn R&D activities that can focus the community's efforts in the most efficient manner to address the challenges of the upcoming experimental program.

During 2014 and 2015, NASA's Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) mission proceeded successfully through Phase C, Design and Development. An X-ray (0.2-12 keV) astrophysics payload destined for the International Space Station, NICER is manifested for launch in early 2017 on the Commercial Resupply Services SpaceX-11 flight. Its scientific objectives are to investigate the internal structure, dynamics, and energetics of neutron stars, the densest objects in the universe. During Phase C, flight components including optics, detectors, the optical bench, pointing actuators, electronics, and others were subjected to environmental testing and integrated to form the flight payload. A custom-built facility was used to co-align and integrate the X-ray "concentrator" optics and silicon-drift detectors. Ground calibration provided robust performance measures of the optical (at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center) and detector (at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology) subsystems, while comprehensive functional tests prior to payload-level environmental testing met all instrument performance requirements. We describe here the implementation of NICER's major subsystems, summarize their performance and calibration, and outline the component-level testing that was successfully applied.

Influenza is a population health issue in Canada, with an annual infection rate of 10-25% of the population. The purpose of this thesis was to analyze influenza-like illnesses (ILI) from 2004-05 through to 2008-09, both spatially and temporally, throughout the province of Manitoba. The analysis used a framework specific to spatial analysis, and incorporated the principles of population health and ecological frameworks. The underlying objectives of the research were to better understand the patterns of ILI diagnoses as well as the characteristics of those diagnosed. Maps were created to show the results from various perspectives and negative binomial regression analysis was used to test which, if any, of the chosen variables were significant. Based on this research, one could conclude that although clusters of ILI do exist in Manitoba, a clear relationship does not exist between the determinants of health and ILI.

The TTP Toolbox provides a methodical, proven approach to TTP development or revision based upon an existing Flexible Method of Cognitive Task Analysis (FLEX) (Shadrick, Lussier, & Hinkle, 2005) further tested and refined during subsequent research (Topolski, Leibrecht, Kiser, Kirkley, & Crabb, 2009). The TTP developmen/revision process involves the use of tactical vignettes in various developmen/revision modes (i.e., environments) to drive discussion sessions from which the unit will capture and organize data relevant to TTP. This report documents the creation and evaluation of a guide designed to assist facilitators who conduct after action reviews (AAR) of missions executed using the Virtual Battlespace-2 (VBS2) game. Observations of course-related exercises suggest there is a clear need for the guide. The results of the formative evaluation and an exploratory investigation indicate the guide meets the need. The guide is available as a stand-alone document in ARI Research Product 2011-09, After Action Review Guide for Trainers of Virtual Battlespace-2 Missions. It is also a valuable addition to the Soldiers' Toolbox for Developing Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures, ARI Research Product 2011-08, that resulted from earlier research. The results of the exploratory investigation strongly suggest that effectively employing VBS2 AAR capabilities is a key factor in engendering buy-in for simulation-based training among facilitators and Soldiers. The Virtual Battlespace-2 (VBS2) training simulation provides special feedback capabilities for supporting mission after action reviews (AARs). To help AAR facilitators leverage the software's special AAR capabilities, the VBS2 AAR Guide was created to serve as a professional development and performance support tool. Full details on the development of the guide can be found in ARI Technical Report 1294, Guidelines and Tools for VBS2 Mission After Action Reviews: Development and Evaluation. The guide incorporated doctrinal AAR guidelines as well as best practices gleaned from academic and technical literature. The guide underwent iterative review by schoolhouse leaders and instructors during initial development. The guide was then field tested by cadre members of three different Army courses and revised based on their feedback. This publication describes the contents, organization, and presentation style of the guide. It includes the complete guide along with suggestions for utilizing the materials to realize optimal benefits. The products are the culmination of a multi-faceted research program that developed methods and measures for communicating tactics, techniques, and procedures to Soldiers., The original document contains color images.

This project explored the feasibility of performing swine influenza surveillance in Manitoba using provincial veterinary diagnostic laboratory data and a farm premises identification registry. Diagnoses of swine influenza using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were obtained from the veterinary laboratory database and linked with registry data on farm location and characteristics. Statistical and space-time analyses, including the Cuzick and Edwards test, Kulldorff Spatiotemporal scan, the Knox test and the modified CuSum method, were used to determine the time and spatial patterns of swine influenza in Manitoba. Analysis showed that swine influenza was endemic but also seasonal and that the frequency of diagnosis was increasing in time. Swine influenza was clustered in several regions across the province, including the southeast, and was clustered in time, particularly during the later time periods of the study. This study demonstrated that the farm premises identification registry is a crucial component of disease surveillance in animals.

This report describes the methods developed and experiments executed to explore the best methods for communicating tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) and measuring Soldiers' understanding of TTPs. It contains sample documentation of the communication methods, measures, training, and vignettes developed for this exploratory research and then packaged in a "TTP Toolbox" for Soldiers. Overall, each of the three modes of communication resulted in superior performance relative to the control condition, indicating the communication methods tested actually increased Soldiers' understanding of TTP. The Written mode of communication appeared to provide greater understanding of TTP; however, Soldiers preferred the Video-Graphic-Written mode. The authors examine alternate explanations for the findings and document lessons learned about TTP communication and measurement methods based on Soldiers' feedback. The report concludes with method recommendations to improve TTP communication and understanding for future research and implementation. This document describes research conducted to create an innovative, Soldier-friendly method for developing tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP). The approach built on previously developed methodology, blending knowledge elicitation techniques and simulation-based vignettes to produce a flexible set of tools to structure and guide the TTP development process. The resulting toolbox was implemented with Soldiers to obtain feedback and ideas for improving the method. When groups of Soldiers used the toolbox to develop focused TTP, the method proved to work well with a variety of missions and tactical conditions. The clarity and quality of the tools as well as the effectiveness of the method were assessed using multiple measures. The Soldiers rated the effectiveness of the method's various components positively. The quality of the resulting TTP increased across exercises (practice effect) and groups (resulting from toolbox improvements between groups). The movement of marine vertebrates has been tracked using a variety of techniques, all of which depend on the external attachment of a transmitting or recording device. However, these devices can have negative effects on the subject animals, limiting both the quantity and quality of data collected. We present a new method for monitoring large-scale movement of marine vertebrates that uses behavioural data stored on a surgically implanted data logger. The technique ('behavioural geolocation') relies on the principles of light-based geolocation but rather than measuring ambient light levels, changes in diving behaviour associated with sunrise and sunset are used to infer daylength and time of local sunrise, and hence location. We present data from a trial, post-hoc, analysis of diving data collected from macaroni penguins Eudyptes chrysolophus during long foraging trips associated with incubation and preparation for moult. Our results showed that the penguins usually travelled to the polar frontal zone to the north of their breeding colony at South Georgia, an area broadly consistent with previously measured behaviour and the availability of preferred prey at this period of the annual cycle.

The use of automated systems to record the identity of individual penguins and their movements in and out of a colony can provide an effective means of studying penguin biology remotely. A new gateway installed at the macaroni penguin colony at Fairy Point (513 breeding pairs in 2003) on Bird Island, South Georgia in February 2003 and the implantation of passive integrated transponders for identifying individuals is described. The reliability of the system in recording penguin arrival and departure during the end of the 2002/2003 breeding season and over the complete 2003/2004 breeding season was tested using an independent method of radio telemetry. Results from two seasons of trials indicated that there was only a 3.7% probability of the gateway missing a penguin in 2002/2003 (185 total logged crossings) and 3.9% in 2003/2004 (1,309 total logged crossings); this compared with probabilities of 16.2 and 7.9% using radio telemetry, both differences being highly significant. This automatic logging gateway is therefore shown to be a more reliable means of recording the transit of penguins between the colony and sea and, over the longer term, elucidating colony attendance and survival rates of this species at South Georgia.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is becoming epidemic world wide, with the number of cases projected to increase from 171 million cases in the year 2000 to 366 million cases in the year 2030. The number of cases of DM in Manitoba is also rapidly increasing. In 1998, it was estimated that there were 54,926 adults living with diagnosed DM in Manitoba, a significant increase from 30,104 cases in 1986. The purpose of this study was to describe the temporal and geographic variability of DM in the province of Manitoba and to assess the degree to which this variability is associated with underlying population characteristics. This was accomplished in four separate studies. The first study focused on describing and modeling the spatial distribution of DM prevalence in the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1998. The second study compared the demographic, temporal and geographic patterns of DM incidence and prevalence in the Manitoba First Nation population to the non-First Nation population from 1989 to 1998. The third study used a number of diverse spatial techniques to visualize, explore and model the incidence of DM in the province of Manitoba between 1989 and 1998. The fourth study used a component cohort projection model to back-cast and forecast the prevalence of DM in Manitoba from 1950 to 2050. All analyses were based on DM incidence and prevalence data derived from the Manitoba diabetes database. The results of these four studies suggest that the number of DM cases will continue to rapidly increase into the foreseeable future in Manitoba. They also suggest that despite an observed gradient in DM risk by age, socioeconomic and First Nation status, all population groups are at significant risk for developing the disease. It is concluded that prevention programs focusing only on groups at highest risk for developing DM will have little chance of success and that population based prevention approaches which tackle the fabric of everyday life will be required to stem the epidemic. The Army Research Laboratory (ARL), Computational and Information Sciences Directorate, Battlefield Environment Division, at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), New Mexico is currently involved in overseeing the development of a new battlefield weather information resource. This new resource deemed DAMTA (Disposable, Air-droppable, Meteorological Tower Array) will consist of multiple individual towers, which will be dispersed over selected battlefield locations by an airborne platform. They will collect and transmit meteorological data in unattended operation for up to 30 days. The purpose of this current research project is to investigate the benefits of augmenting the DAMTA with digital imagery sensors to collect near real-time images of weather conditions on the battlefield. The mission of this project was to provide a detailed recommendation for imagery enhancement to the DAMTA plafform. The specific deliverables were as follows: (1) To determine the benefits that will accrue to the army through the use of imagery enhanced DAMTA; (2) to determine a specific off-the-shelf camera most suited to integration with the DAMTA; (3) to construct a prototype demonstrating the best method of integrating cameras with the DAMTA platform.

Full Text, Thesis (PhD Doctorate), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), School of Tourism and Hotel Management, Griffith Business School, Tracking studies conducted by the Australian Tourist Commission (ATC) over the last decade have revealed that Australia has a high ranking as a desired destination among US residents. However prior to the peaked effect of the Olympics, this desire had not translated into increasing numbers of visitor arrivals from the US. As travel to Australia from the US is time consuming and involves extremes of physical distance, it would be to Australia's advantage to understand better the dimensions and ramifications of long haul travel with regard to destination choice. This thesis has two objectives: to assess the extent to which a destination being a long haul from its target market affects the choice of this destination; and to consider the marketing implications of the above with a focus on the selection of Australia, as compared to competitive destinations, by the US holiday market. Data were collected from two samples: the West Coast of the US and the East Coast of Australia. The instrument for the US sample collected information on the respondents' choice set structure, attribute importance in selecting a long haul destination, perceptions of the long haul destinations of Australia and Italy, and sociodemographics. The instrument for the Australian sample collected information on the respondents' choice set structure, attribute importance for both long haul and short haul destination selection, perceptions of the long haul destination of the US and the short haul destination of New Zealand, and sociodemographics. This data were then used to test nine hypotheses designed to give insight into the research objectives. The results indicate that tourists place differing degrees of importance on attributes of a long haul destination as compared to a short haul destination for a vacation. It also demonstrates that tourists' perceptions of the distance to destinations are often highly inaccurate and that this inaccuracy is related neither to actual distance nor choice set plac

Geophysical techniques are widely applied in archaeological exploration, providing rapid and noninvasive site appraisal. Geochemical analyses contribute significantly in archaeometry, but conventional laboratory apparatus requires that samples are removed from their in situ context. Recent advances in field‐portable apparatus facilitate in situ geochemical analysis, and this apparatus is deployed in this paper alongside conventional geophysical analysis to characterize the archaeological prospectivity of a site. The target is subsurface debris at the crash site of a World War II Mosquito aircraft. A 100 m long transect of magnetic, electromagnetic (EM) and in situ X‐ray fluorescence (XRF) measurements was acquired in November 2014, with soil samples also collected for laboratory validation. A subset of XRF measurements was repeated in August 2015 alongside a targeted grid, 900 m2 in area, of magnetic gradiometry profiles. Built chiefly from wood, the Mosquito responds weakly in magnetic and EM data; magnetic gradient anomalies of ±10 nT/m are instead attributed to thermoremanence in a burnt layer at 0.2–0.4 m depth, produced by the impact fire following the crash. XRF spectrometry reveals co‐located enrichments in copper (Cu) and zinc(Zn) ions (400% and 200%, respectively, above background). These metals are alloyed into brass, present in abundance in the ammunition on board the Mosquito. Records from the in situ XRF sampling compare well with laboratory validated data, although a bespoke calibration for the local soil type would improve the reliability of absolute geochemical concentrations. XRF responses vary significantly with ground conditions: the November 2014 acquisition was performed soon after ploughing at the site, potentially providing a fresh charge of metallic contaminants to the ground surface.
