1. Thermodynamics of interactions between cellulose nanocrystals and monovalent counterions

Abstract: Alkali and quaternary ammonium cations interact with negatively charged cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) bearing sulfated or carboxylated functional groups. As these are some of the most commonly occurring cations CNC encounter in applications, the thermodynamic parameters of these CNC-counterion interactions were evaluated with isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). Whereas the adsorption of monovalent counterions onto CNCs was thermodynamically favourable at all evaluated conditions as indicated by a negative Gibbs free energy, the enthalpic and entropic contributions to the CNC-ion interactions were found to be strongly dependent on the hydration characteristics of the counterion and could be correlated with the potential barrier to water exchange of the respective ions. The adsorption of chaotropic cations onto the surface was exothermic, while the interactions with kosmotropic cations were endothermic and completely entropy-driven. The interactions of CNCs with more bulky quaternary ammonium counterions were more complex, and the mechanism of interaction shifted from electrostatic interactions with surface charged groups of CNCs towards adsorption of alkyl chains onto the CNC hydrophobic planes when the alkyl chain length increased.

2. Selective recognition of herbicides : calix[4]arene derivatives and imprinted polymers for the education of chlorophenoxy acids

Abstract: In this day and age there is a growing concern about the increasing number of dangerous chemicals in Agriculture. Obsolete pesticides and their metabolites represent a major threat to the environment. These compounds are highly persistent, toxic and tend to accumulate within the human body. While considerable efforts have been made to abolish stockpiles of these hazardous chemicals, the removal of their residues from soil and water sources remains problematic. Therefore, the main aim of this research project is to provide the basis for the development of a simple, cost-effective and environmentally friendly technology for the removal of obsolete pesticides from water and soil. The fundamental concept was based on Supramolecular Chemistry, which implies non-covalent interactions between "host" and "guest". Although such interactions have formed the basis of numerous fundamental studies, their application within the environmental field has yet to be assessed. Introductory physicochemical analyses of the pollutants and prospective receptors in various media such as solubility, speciation in different organic solvents as well as partition and distribution in binary organic solvent/water systems were carried out. Design of the "host" was based on the calix[4]arene framework since it provided a convenient route for chemical transformations and possesses cavities of complementary size to the guest species. The receptor was chemically converted, using synthetic resource-saving techniques that provide the best outcome, to improve its ability to remove obsolete pesticides from water and soil. In connection with the preliminary studies and the synthetic activities, extensive 1H NMR, X-ray, UV and electrochemical evaluations of interactions between a wide variety of obsolete pesticides and the receptors were carried out. As a result, the receptors were proved to interact selectively with chlorinated phenyl- and phenoxyacetic acids and their metabolites. This was followed by a detailed determination of the stability of supramolecular complexes as well as the thermodynamic parameters associated with the complexation process. Finally, aqueous samples of pollutants were subjected to extraction by the most prospective receptors. At this stage, some macrocycles were anchored to a polymeric backbone or naturally occurring materials. As such, both liquid-liquid (LLE) and solid-liquid (SLE) extraction techniques were tested and proved to be effective tools for water remediation.

Abstract: The Turkestan lynx (Lynx lynx isabellina Blyth, 1847) is a rare and understudied subspecies of the Eurasian lynx occupying the mountains of Central and South Asia. This elusive felid’s northwestern range includes the Tien Shan and Zhetisu Alatau mountains in the border region of Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. As the first step to conserve this vulnerable carnivore, we have conducted the first full-scale research from 2013 until 2022 on its distribution in this region. Using 132 environmental predictors of 359 lynx sightings, we have created species habitat distribution models across the lynx’s northwestern range using machine learning approaches (Maximum Entropy—MaxEnt). Additionally, we created species distribution forecasts based on seven bio-climatic environmental predictors with each three different future global climate model scenarios. To validate these forecasts, we have calculated the changes in the lynx distribution range for the year 2100, making the first species distribution forecast for the Turkestan lynx in the area. Additionally, it provides insight into the possible effects of global climate change on this lynx population. Based on these distribution models, the lynx population in the Northern and Western Tien Shan and Zhetisu Alatau plays a significant role in maintaining the stability of the whole subspecies in its northwestern and global range, while the distribution forecast shows that most lynx distribution ranges will reduce in all future climate scenarios, and we might face the Turkestan lynx’s significant distribution range decline under the ongoing and advancing climate change conditions. For a future (year 2100) warming scenario of 3 deg. C (GCM IPSL), we observe a decrease of 35% in Kazakhstan, 40% in Kyrgyzstan, and 30% in China as the three countries with the highest current predicted distribution range. For a milder temperature increase of 1.5–2 deg. C. (GCM MRI), we observe an increase of 17% Kazakhstan, decrease of 10%

Abstract: The Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) was a yearlong expedition supported by the icebreaker R/V Polarstern, following the Transpolar Drift from October 2019 to October 2020. The campaign documented an annual cycle of physical, biological, and chemical processes impacting the atmosphere-ice-ocean system. Of central importance were measurements of the thermodynamic and dynamic evolution of the sea ice. A multi-agency international team led by the University of Colorado/CIRES and NOAA-PSL observed meteorology and surface-atmosphere energy exchanges, including radiation; turbulent momentum flux; turbulent latent and sensible heat flux; and snow conductive flux. There were four stations on the ice, a 10 m micrometeorological tower paired with a 23/30 m mast and radiation station and three autonomous Atmospheric Surface Flux Stations. Collectively, the four stations acquired ~928 days of data. This manuscript documents the acquisition and post-processing of those measurements and provides a guide for researchers to access and use the data products.

Abstract: In this paper, the first in a series of four articles, the scientific goals of the Metron project are highlighted, and the characteristics of the cosmic objects available for study within its framework are provided. The Metron interferometer radio telescope should include arrays of meter-range dipole antennas placed on Earth, in outer space or on the far side of the Moon (or a combination of these options). Working in the meter range will enable the study of the so-called cosmological epoch of ``Dark Ages'', which is challenging to observe but highly interesting for understanding the origin of the first stars, galaxies, and black holes, as well as for the search for new cosmological objects and processes. One possibility is to search for absorption in the 21 cm line within extended halos around early protogalaxies and supermassive primordial black holes, whose existence is predicted in a number of models. Another goal of Metron may be to clarify the anomalous absorption in the 21 cm line previously detected by the EDGES telescopes and to observe radio emissions from stars' and exoplanets' magnetospheres. The Metron project aims to achieve unprecedented resolution for the meter range, which is expected to yield new world-class scientific results. Abstract: Despite the importance of high-latitude surface energy budgets (SEBs) for land-climate interactions in the rapidly changing Arctic, uncertainties in their prediction persist. Here, we harmonize SEB observations across a network of vegetated and glaciated sites at circumpolar scale (1994–2021). Our variance-partitioning analysis identifies vegetation type as an important predictor for SEB-components during Arctic summer (June-August), compared to other SEB-drivers including climate, latitude and permafrost characteristics. Differences among vegetation types can be of similar magnitude as between vegetation and glacier surfaces and are especially high for summer sensible and latent heat fluxes. The timing of SEB-flux summer-regimes (when daily mean values exceed 0 Wm−2) relative to snow-free and -onset dates varies substantially depending on vegetation type, implying vegetation controls on snow-cover and SEB-flux seasonality. Our results indicate complex shifts in surface energy fluxes with land-cover transitions and a lengthening summer season, and highlight the potential for improving future Earth system models via a refined representation of Arctic vegetation types.

Abstract: The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) Collaboration has proposed a general-purpose experimental facility operating in beam-dump mode at the CERN SPS accelerator to search for light, feebly interacting particles. In the baseline configuration, the SHiP experiment incorporates two complementary detectors. The upstream detector is designed for recoil signatures of light dark matter (LDM) scattering and for neutrino physics, in particular with tau neutrinos. It consists of a spectrometer magnet housing a layered detector system with high-density LDM/neutrino target plates, emulsion-film technology and electronic high-precision tracking. The total detector target mass amounts to about eight tonnes. The downstream detector system aims at measuring visible decays of feebly interacting particles to both fully reconstructed final states and to partially reconstructed final states with neutrinos, in a nearly background-free environment. Abstract: In July 2018 an optimization run for the proposed charm cross section measurement for SHiP was performed at the CERN SPS. A heavy, moving target instrumented with nuclear emulsion films followed by a silicon pixel tracker was installed in front of the Goliath magnet at the H4 proton beam-line. Behind the magnet, scintillating-fibre, drift-tube and RPC detectors were placed. The purpose of this run was to validate the measurement's feasibility, to develop the required analysis tools and fine-tune the detector layout. In this paper, we present the track reconstruction in the pixel tracker and the track matching with the moving emulsion detector. The pixel detector performed as expected and it is shown that, after proper alignment, a vertex matching rate of 87% is achieved.

Abstract: The polar atmospheric surface layer is often stably stratified, which strongly influences turbulent transport processes between the atmosphere and sea ice/ocean. Transport is usually parametrized applying Monin Obukhov Similarity Theory (MOST) which delivers transfer coefficients as a function of stability parameters (see below). In a series of papers (Gryanik and Lüpkes, 2018; Gryanik et al., 2020,2021; Gryanik and Lüpkes, 2022) it has been shown that differences between existing parametrizations are large, especially for strong stability. One reason is that they are based on different data sets, for which the origin of differences is still unclear. In this situation Gryanik et al. (2021) as well as Gryanik and Lüpkes (2022) proposed a numerically efficient method, which can be used for most of the existing data sets and their specific stability dependences. A package of parametrization resulted that is suitable for its application in weather prediction and climate models. Especially, calculation of fluxes over sea ice were improved. Combined with latest parametrizations of surface roughness it has a large impact on large scale fields as shown recently by Schneider et al. (2021) who applied some members of the package.

Abstract: Dark matter is a well-established theoretical addition to the Standard Model supported by many observations in modern astrophysics and cosmology. In this context, the existence of weakly interacting massive particles represents an appealing solution to the observed thermal relic in the Universe. Indeed, a large experimental campaign is ongoing for the detection of such particles in the sub-GeV mass range. Adopting the benchmark scenario for light dark matter particles produced in the decay of a dark photon, with alpha(D) = 0.1 and m(A ') = 3m(chi), we study the potential of the SHiP experiment to detect such elusive particles through its Scattering and Neutrino detector (SND). In its 5-years run, corresponding to 2 center dot 10(20) protons on target from the CERN SPS, we find that SHiP will improve the current limits in the mass range for the dark matter from about 1 MeV to 300 MeV. In particular, we show that SHiP will probe the thermal target for Majorana candidates in most of this mass window and even reach the Pseudo-Dirac thermal relic.

Abstract: The Winter Online Lecture Series on Europe will take place in December 2021 in connection with the courses “History of European integration (1919-1993)” (MAHEC-S1-M6i) and “Economic and social history of Europe after 1945” (MAHEC-S3-M5iii) from the Master in European Contemporary History, and the course “Democratic transitions in Central and Eastern Europe” (BCE-EU-301-04) from the Bachelor in European Cultures, with the aim of giving students on these programmes, as well as the wider academic community at the University of Luxembourg, the opportunity to find out about the history and workings of the European institutions in Luxembourg from new and unconventional angles and to discuss some of the milestones in contemporary European history with people who were involved in or witnessed these events. Each session (in French, with Q&A session in French and English) will be streamed via Webex and will include a presentation by a speaker, followed by a discussion with the audience and the opportunity to ask questions.

Abstract: Magnonics is a budding research field in nanomagnetism and nanoscience that addresses the use of spin waves (magnons) to transmit, store, and process information. The rapid advancements of this field during last one decade in terms of upsurge in research papers, review articles, citations, proposals of devices as well as introduction of new sub-topics prompted us to present the first roadmap on magnonics. This is a collection of 22 sections written by leading experts in this field who review and discuss the current status besides presenting their vision of future perspectives. Today, the principal challenges in applied magnonics are the excitation of sub-100 nm wavelength magnons, their manipulation on the nanoscale and the creation of sub-micrometre devices using low-Gilbert damping magnetic materials and its interconnections to standard electronics. To this end, magnonics offers lower energy consumption, easier integrability and compatibility with CMOS structure, reprogrammability, shorter wavelength, smaller device features, anisotropic properties, negative group velocity, non-reciprocity and efficient tunability by various external stimuli to name a few. Hence, despite being a young research field, magnonics has come a long way since its early inception. This roadmap asserts a milestone for future emerging research directions in magnonics, and hopefully, it will inspire a series of exciting new articles on the same topic in the coming years.

15. A universal approach for the non-iterative parametrization of near surface turbulent fluxes in climate and weather prediction models.

Abstract: Weather prediction and climate simulations need reliable parameterizations of turbulent fluxes in the stable surface layer. Especially in these conditions, the uncertainties of such parametrizations are still large. Most of them rely on the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory (MOST), for which universal stability functions (SFs) represent important ingredients. The SFs are nonlinear, if so, a numerical iteration of the MOST equations is required. Moreover, presently available SFs are significantly different at large stability. To simplify the calculations, a non-iterative parametrization of fluxes is derived and corresponding bulk transfer coefficients for momentum and heat for a package of five pairs of state-of-the-art SFs are proposed. For the first time, a parametrization of the related transfer coefficients is derived in a universal framework for all package members. The new parametrizations provide a basis for a cheap systematic study of the impact of surface layer turbulent fluxes in weather prediction and climate models.

Abstract: Results of weather forecast, present-day climate simulations and future climate projections depend among other factors on the interaction between the atmosphere and the underlying sea-ice, the land and the ocean. In numerical weather prediction and climate models some of these interactions are accounted for by transport coefficients describing turbulent exchange of momentum, heat and moisture. Currently used transfer coefficients have, however, large uncertainties in flow regimes being typical for cold nights and seasons, but especially in the polar regions. Furthermore, their determination is numerically complex. It is obvious that progress could be achieved when the transfer coefficients would be given by simple mathematical formulae in frames of an economic computational scheme. Such a new universal, so-called non-iterative parametrization scheme is derived for a package of transfer coefficients. The derivation is based on the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory, which is over the years well accepted in the scientific community. The newly derived non-iterative scheme provides a basis for a cheap systematic study of the impact of near-surface turbulence and of the related transports of momentum, heat and moisture in NWP and climate models. We show that often used transfer coefficients like those of Louis et al. (1982) or of Cheng and Brutsaert (2005) can be applied at large stability only with some caution, keeping in mind that at large stability they significantly overestimate the transfer coefficient compared with most comprehensive measurements. The latter are best reproduced by Gryanik et al. (2020) functions, which are part of the package. We show that the new scheme is flexible, thus, new stability functions can be added to the package, if required.

Abstract: Dark photons are hypothetical massive vector particles that could mix with ordinary photons. The simplest theoretical model is fully characterised by only two parameters: the mass of the dark photon m(gamma)D and its mixing parameter with the photon, epsilon. The sensitivity of the SHiP detector is reviewed for dark photons in the mass range between 0.002 and 10 GeV. Different productionmechanisms are simulated, with the dark photons decaying to pairs of visible fermions, including both leptons and quarks. Exclusion contours are presented and compared with those of past experiments. The SHiP detector is expected to have a unique sensitivity for m. D ranging between 0.8 and 3.3(-0.5)(+0.2) GeV, and epsilon(2) ranging between 10(-11) and 10(-17).

Abstract: C-FOG is a comprehensive bi-national project dealing with the formation, persistence, and dissipation (life cycle) of fog in coastal areas (coastal fog) controlled by land, marine, and atmospheric processes. Given its inherent complexity, coastal-fog literature has mainly focused on case studies, and there is a continuing need for research that integrates across processes (e.g., air–sea–land interactions, environmental flow, aerosol transport, and chemistry), dynamics (two-phase flow and turbulence), microphysics (nucleation, droplet characterization), and thermodynamics (heat transfer and phase changes) through field observations and modeling. Central to C-FOG was a field campaign in eastern Canada from 1 September to 8 October 2018, covering four land sites in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia and an adjacent coastal strip transected by the Research Vessel Hugh R. Sharp. An array of in situ, path-integrating, and remote sensing instruments gathered data across a swath of space–time scales relevant to fog life cycle. Satellite and reanalysis products, routine meteorological observations, numerical weather prediction model (WRF and COAMPS) outputs, large-eddy simulations, and phenomenological modeling underpin the interpretation of field observations in a multiscale and multiplatform framework that helps identify and remedy numerical model deficiencies. An overview of the C-FOG field campaign and some preliminary analysis/findings are presented in this paper.

Abstract: Pridopidine is an investigational drug in late stage development for the treatment of Huntington disease and originally postulated to act as dopamine stabilizer by modulating dopamine-dependent motor behavior. However, preclinical studies show pridopidine has highest affinity to sigma-1 receptors. Importantly, mediated by sigma-1 receptors, pridopidine has neuroprotective properties and enhances neuronal plasticity. The aim of our study was to determine the in-vivo the target engagement (receptor occupancy) of pridopidine at clinically relevant doses in healthy volunteers and Huntington disease patients. We used sigma-1 receptor-specific (S)-(-)-[18F]Fluspidine and dopamine D2/D3 receptor-specific [18F]Fallypride PET imaging to quantify the sigma-1 and dopamine D2/D3 receptor occupancy of pridopidine. Eleven male healthy volunteers (pridopidine 0.5 to 90 mg in six dose groups) and three male Huntington disease patients (pridopidine 90 mg) were studied twice before and 2h following single oral doses of pridopidine using S-(-)-[18F]Fluspidine PET (300 MBq, 0-90min p.i.). Distribution volume VT was quantified using kinetic modeling (One-tissue compartment model; metabolite correction). Four male healthy volunteers were studied twice using [18F]Fallpride PET (200 MBq, 0-210min p.i.) before and 2h after a single oral dose of pridopidine (90 mg). Binding potential BPND was assessed by the simplified reference model. Volume-of-interest analyses were performed. For each subject/tracer, the receptor occupancy was calculated by the Lassen plot analysis. In healthy volunteers, there was high sigma-1 receptor occupancy (87 to 91%) across all brain regions at doses ranging from 22.5 to 90 mg. The sigma-1 receptor occupancy was 43% at 1 mg pridopidine. In Huntington disease patients, very similar to healthy volunteers, at 90 mg pridopidine, there was high sigma-1 receptor occupancy (87±7%, n.s.). Abstract: Magnonics is a rather young physics research field in nanomagnetism and nanoscience that addresses the use of spin waves (magnons) to transmit, store, and process information. After several papers and review articles published in the last decade, with a steadily increase in the number of citations, we are presenting the first Roadmap on Magnonics. This a collection of 22 sections written by leading experts in this field who review and discuss the current status but also present their vision of future perspectives. Today, the principal challenges in applied magnonics are the excitation of sub-100 nm wavelength magnons, their manipulation on the nanoscale and the creation of sub-micrometre devices using low-Gilbert damping magnetic materials and the interconnections to standard electronics. In this respect, magnonics offers lower energy consumption, easier integrability and compatibility with CMOS structure, reprogrammability, shorter wavelength, smaller device features, anisotropic properties, negative group velocity, non-reciprocity and efficient tunability by various external stimuli to name a few. Hence, despite being a young research field, magnonics has come a long way since its early inception. This Roadmap represents a milestone for future emerging research directions in magnonics and hopefully it will be followed by a series of articles on the same topic.

Abstract: The SHiP experiment is proposed to search for very weakly interacting particles beyond the Standard Model which are produced in a 400 GeV/c proton beam dump at the CERN SPS. About 1011muons per spill will be produced in the dump. To design the experiment such that the muon-induced background is minimized, a precise knowledge of the muon spectrum is required. To validate the muon flux generated by our Pythia and GEANT4 based Monte Carlo simulation (FairShip), we have measured the muon flux emanating from a SHiP-like target at the SPS. This target, consisting of 13 interaction lengths of slabs of molybdenum and tungsten, followed by a 2.4 m iron hadron absorber was placed in the H4 400 GeV/c proton beam line. To identify muons and to measure the momentum spectrum, a spectrometer instrumented with drift tubes and a muon tagger were used. During a 3-week period a dataset for analysis corresponding to (3.27 +/- 0.07)x1011protons on target was recorded. This amounts to approximatively 1% of a SHiP spill.

Abstract: The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) experiment proposal at CERN demands a dedicated dipole magnet for its scattering and neutrino detector. This requires a very large volume to be uniformly magnetized at B > 1.2 T, with constraints regarding the inner instrumented volume as well as the external region, where no massive structures are allowed and only an extremely low stray field is admitted. In this paper we report the main technical challenges and the relevant design options providing a comprehensive design for the magnet of the SHiP Scattering and Neutrino Detector.

26. Observational manifestations of 'cosmological dinosaurs' at redshifts $z\sim20$

Abstract: We consider a primordial black hole of very high mass, $10^9-10^{10}M_\odot$, surrounded by dark matter and barionic halo at redshifts $z\sim20$ without any local sources of energy release. Such heavy and concentrated objects in the early universe were previously called ``cosmological dinosaurs''. Spectral distribution and spatial variation of the brightness in the 21 cm line of atomic hydrogen are calculated with the theory of radiation transfer. It is shown that a narrow and deep absorption arises in the form of the spherical shell around the primordial black hole at the certain radius. The parameters of this shell depend almost exclusively on the mass of the black hole. Abstract: Climate models still have deficits in reproducing the surface energy and momentum budgets in Arctic regions. One of the reasons is that currently used transfer coefficients occurring in parameterizations of the turbulent fluxes are based on stability functions derived from measurements over land and not over sea ice. An improved parameterization is developed using the Monin–Obukhov similarity theory (MOST) and corresponding stability functions that reproduce measurements over sea ice obtained during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) campaign. The new stability functions for the stable surface layer represent a modification of earlier ones also based on SHEBA measurements. It is shown that the new functions are superior to the former ones with respect to the representation of the measured relationship between the MOST stability parameter and the bulk Richardson number. Nevertheless, the functions fulfill the same criteria of applicability as the earlier functions and contain, as an extension, a dependence on the neutral-limit turbulent Prandtl number. Applying the new functions we develop an efficient noniterative parameterization of the near-surface turbulent fluxes of momentum and heat with transfer coefficients as a function of the bulk Richardson number (Rib) and roughness parameters. A hierarchy of transfer coefficients is recommended for weather and climate models. They agree better with SHEBA data for strong stability (Rib > 0.1) than previous parameterizations and they agree well with those based on the Businger–Dyer functions in the range Rib < 0.1.

Abstract: The calculation of the near-surface turbulent fluxes of energy and momentum in climate and weather prediction models requires transfer coefficients. Currently used parametrizations of these coefficients are based on stability functions derived from measurements over land and not over sea ice. However, recently, a non-iterative parametrization has been proposed by Gryanik and Lüpkes (2018), which can be applied to climate and weather prediction models as well but uses stability functions of Grachev et al. (2007). These functions had been obtained from measurements during the Surface Heat Budget over the Arctic Ocean campaign (SHEBA) and thus from measurements over sea ice. A drawback of the scheme of Gryanik and Lüpkes (2018) is that there is still some complexity due to the complexity of the SHEBA based functions. Thus new stability functions are proposed for the stable boundary layer, which are also based on the SHEBA measurements but avoid the complexity. It is shown that the new functions are superior to the former ones with respect to the representation of the measured relationship between the Obukhov length and the bulk Richardson number. Moreover, the resulting transfer coefficients agree slightly better with the SHEBA observations in the very stable range. Nevertheless, the functions fulfill the same criteria of applicability as the earlier functions and contain furthermore as an extension a dependence on the neutral Prandtl number. Applying the new functions, an efficient non-iterative parametrization of the near-surface turbulent fluxes of momentum and heat is developed where transfer coefficients result as a function of the bulk Richardson number (Rib) and roughness parameters. The new transfer coefficients, which are recommended for weather and climate models, agree well with the SHEBA data in a large range of stability (0< Rib<0.5) and with those based on the Dyer-Businger functions in the range Rib <0.08.

Abstract: Dark photons are hypothetical massive vector particles that could mix with ordinary photons. The simplest theoretical model is fully characterised by only two parameters: the mass of the dark photon m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ and its mixing parameter with the photon, $\varepsilon$. The sensitivity of the SHiP detector is reviewed for dark photons in the mass range between 0.002 and 10 GeV. Different production mechanisms are simulated, with the dark photons decaying to pairs of visible fermions, including both leptons and quarks. Exclusion contours are presented and compared with those of past experiments. The SHiP detector is expected to have a unique sensitivity for m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ ranging between 0.8 and 3.3$^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$ GeV, and $\varepsilon^2$ ranging between $10^{-11}$ and $10^{-17}$.

Abstract: We propose to build and operate a detector that, for the first time, will measure the process $pp\to\nu X$ at the LHC and search for feebly interacting particles (FIPs) in an unexplored domain. The TI18 tunnel has been identified as a suitable site to perform these measurements due to very low machine-induced background. The detector will be off-axis with respect to the ATLAS interaction point (IP1) and, given the pseudo-rapidity range accessible, the corresponding neutrinos will mostly come from charm decays: the proposed experiment will thus make the first test of the heavy flavour production in a pseudo-rapidity range that is not accessible by the current LHC detectors. In order to efficiently reconstruct neutrino interactions and identify their flavour, the detector will combine in the target region nuclear emulsion technology with scintillating fibre tracking layers and it will adopt a muon identification system based on scintillating bars that will also play the role of a hadronic calorimeter. The time of flight measurement will be achieved thanks to a dedicated timing detector. The detector will be a small-scale prototype of the scattering and neutrino detector (SND) of the SHiP experiment: the operation of this detector will provide an important test of the neutrino reconstruction in a high occupancy environment., Comment: Letter of Intent

Abstract: This paper presents a fast approach to simulating muons produced in interactions of the SPS proton beams with the target of the SHiP experiment. The SHIP experiment will be able to search for new long-lived particles produced in a 400 GeV/c SPS proton beam dump and which travel distances between fifty metres and tens of kilometers. The SHiP detector needs to operate under ultra-low background conditions and requires large simulated samples of muon induced background processes. Through the use of Generative Adversarial Networks it is possible to emulate the simulation of the interaction of 400 GeV/c proton beams with the SHiP target, an otherwise computationally intensive process. For the simulation requirements of the SHiP experiment, generative networks are capable of approximating the full simulation of the dense fixed target, offering a speed increase by a factor of O(10(6)). To evaluate the performance of such an approach, comparisons of the distributions of reconstructed muon momenta in SHiP's spectrometer between samples using the full simulation and samples produced through generative models are presented. The methods discussed in this paper can be generalised and applied to modelling any non-discrete multi-dimensional distribution.

Abstract: The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) Collaboration has shown that the CERN SPS accelerator with its 400 GeV/c proton beam offers a unique opportunity to explore the Hidden Sector [1-3]. The proposed experiment is an intensity frontier experiment which is capable of searching for hidden particles through both visible decays and through scattering signatures from recoil of electrons or nuclei. The high-intensity experimental facility developed by the SHiP Collaboration is based on a number of key features and developments which provide the possibility of probing a large part of the parameter space for a wide range of models with light long-lived super-weakly interacting particles with masses up to O(10) GeV/c(2) in an environment of extremely clean background conditions. This paper describes the proposal for the experimental facility together with the most important feasibility studies. The paper focuses on the challenging new ideas behind the beam extraction and beam delivery, the proton beam dump, and the suppression of beam-induced background.

Abstract: Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs) are hypothetical particles predicted by many extensions of the Standard Model. These particles can, among other things, explain the origin of neutrino masses, generate the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe and provide a dark matter candidate. The SHiP experiment will be able to search for HNLs produced in decays of heavy mesons and travelling distances ranging between O(50 m) and tens of kilometers before decaying. We present the sensitivity of the SHiP experiment to a number of HNL's benchmark models and provide a way to calculate the SHiP's sensitivity to HNLs for arbitrary patterns of flavour mixings. The corresponding tools and data files are also made publicly available.

Abstract: The paper presents the summary data of the authors' research within the framework of the OLIMPIYA project (the Russian acronym of {\bf OLI}viny iz {\bf M}eteoritov --- {\bf P}oisk tyazholykh {\bf I} sverkhtyazholykh {\bf YA}der / Olivines from meteorites: Search for heavy and superheavy nuclei) and results of track analysis for heavy cosmic ray nuclei (\emph{Z} = 26--129) in olivine crystals from meteorites using an original processing technique. A total of 21,743 tracks of nuclei heavier than iron have been identified in meteoritic matter to date to form the largest database within this charge range. The database includes three tracks of superheavy nuclei with the lifetimes of about a few decades, which can be considered as direct experimental evidence for the existence of natural superheavy nuclei from the "island of stability". Comprehensive comparative analysis of data from two meteorites with different cosmic ray exposure ages, Marjalahti (from 178 to 205 Myr) and Eagle Station (from 35 to 71 Myr), is presented for the first time. Abstract: Recurrent neural networks have proved to be an effective method for statistical language modeling. However, in practice their memory and run-time complexity are usually too large to be implemented in real-time offline mobile applications. In this paper we consider several compression techniques for recurrent neural networks including Long-Short Term Memory models. We make particular attention to the high-dimensional output problem caused by the very large vocabulary size. We focus on effective compression methods in the context of their exploitation on devices: pruning, quantization, and matrix decomposition approaches (low-rank factorization and tensor train decomposition, in particular). For each model we investigate the trade-off between its size, suitability for fast inference and perplexity. We propose a general pipeline for applying the most suitable methods to compress recurrent neural networks for language modeling. Abstract: в статье рассматривается использование метода моделирования Maxent для подвида благородного оленя, марала (Cervus elaphus sibiricus Severtzov, 1873) на территории национального парка «Колсай колдери» и всего Казахстана. Модель строилась на основании данных за 2011–2014 гг., собранных во время учетов животных на конных маршрутах. Для анализа распределения были использованы климатические и почвенные факторы, а также данные о растительном покрове региона. Основным результатом работы являются карты пространственного распределения вида для двух опытных территорий. Анализ степени влияния отдельных факторов на это распределение выявил наиболее важные факторы, различные для двух опытных территорий. Установлено, что на распределение марала на территории национального парка большее влияние оказывают почвенные факторы, для территории Казахстана – климатические.

Abstract: Band alignment at the interface between evaporated silver films and Zn- or O-terminated polar orientations of ZnO is explored by combining soft and hard x-ray photoemissions on native and hydrogenated surfaces. Ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) is used to track variations of work function, band bending, ionization energy, and Schottky barrier during silver deposition. The absolute values of band bending and the bulk position of the Fermi level are determined on continuous silver films by hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) through a dedicated modeling of core levels. Hydrogenation leads to the formation of similar to 0.3 monolayer of donorlike hydroxyl groups on both ZnO-O and ZnO-Zn surfaces and to the release of metallic zinc on ZnO-Zn. However, no transition to an accumulation layer is observed. On bare surfaces, silver adsorption is cationic on ZnO(000 (1) over bar)-O [anionic on ZnO(0001)-Zn] at the earliest stages of growth as expected from polarity healing before adsorbing as a neutral species. UPS and HAXPES data appear quite consistent. The two surfaces undergo rather similar band bendings for all types of preparation. The downward band bending of V-bb,(ZnO-O) = -0.4 eV and V-bb,(ZnO-Zn) = -0.6 eV found for the bare surfaces is reinforced upon hydrogenation (V-bb,(ZnO-O+H) = -1.1 eV, V-bb,(ZnO-Zn+H) = -1.2 eV). At the interface with Ag, a unique value of band bending of -0.75 eV is observed. While exposure to atomic hydrogen modulates strongly the energetic positions of the surface levels, a similar Schottky barrier of 0.5-0.7 eV is found for thick silver films on the two surfaces.

45. Seasonal and latitudinal variations of surface fluxes at two Arctic terrestrial sites

Abstract: This observational study compares seasonal variations of surface fluxes (turbulent, radiative, and soil heat) and other ancillary atmospheric/surface/permafrost data based on in-situ measurements made at terrestrial research observatories located near the coast of the Arctic Ocean. Hourly-averaged multiyear data sets collected at Eureka (Nunavut, Canada) and Tiksi (East Siberia, Russia) are analyzed in more detail to elucidate similarities and differences in the seasonal cycles at these two Arctic stations, which are situated at significantly different latitudes (80.0°N and 71.6°N, respectively). While significant gross similarities exist in the annual cycles of various meteorological parameters and fluxes, the differences in latitude, local topography, cloud cover, snowfall, and soil characteristics produce noticeable differences in fluxes and in the structures of the atmospheric boundary layer and upper soil temperature profiles. An important factor is that even though higher latitude sites (in this case Eureka) generally receive less annual incoming solar radiation but more total daily incoming solar radiation throughout the summer months than lower latitude sites (in this case Tiksi). This leads to a counter-intuitive state where the average active layer (or thaw line) is deeper and the topsoil temperature in midsummer are higher in Eureka which is located almost 10° north of Tiksi. The study further highlights the differences in the seasonal and latitudinal variations of the incoming shortwave and net radiation as well as the moderating cloudiness effects that lead to temporal and spatial differences in the structure of the atmospheric boundary layer and the uppermost ground layer. Specifically the warm season (Arctic summer) is shorter and mid-summer amplitude of the surface fluxes near solar noon is generally less in Eureka than in Tiksi. Abstract: The SHiP experiment is designed to search for very weakly interacting particles beyond the Standard Model which are produced in a 400 GeV/c proton beam dump at the CERN SPS. An essential task for the experiment is to keep the Standard Model background level to less than 0.1 event after 2 x 10(20) protons on target. In the beam dump, around 10(11) muons will be produced per second. The muon rate in the spectrometer has to be reduced by at least four orders of magnitude to avoid muon-induced combinatorial background. A novel active muon shield is used to magnetically deflect the muons out of the acceptance of the spectrometer. This paper describes the basic principle of such a shield, its optimization and its performance.

47. THE IMPORTANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS' PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN MODERN ENVIRONMENT

Abstract: The research was aimed at evaluating physical activity of students, who live in the city and rural areas, identifying the relationship between physical activity and school performance, as well as studying the dependence of the number of diseases on the volume of locomotion. To this end, in the Belgorod Oblast, 1,488 schoolchildren of 5-11 grades were surveyed from 2014 to 2017. The schoolchildren were divided into the following three groups: The 1st group included the schoolchildren assigned to a special education department; the 2nd group included the schoolchildren assigned to the main education department, and the 3rd group involved the schoolchildren regularly engaged in sports. The results of the questionnaire indicated that the children living in rural areas move more than their peers living in the city. The schoolchildren who regularly engage in sports have a higher level of performance (about 45% of respondents get excellent grades), compared to the students in the special and main education departments (approximately 32% get excellent grades). It is noted that approximately 93% of the schoolchildren living in rural areas and 92% of the schoolchildren living in the city referred to the third group of the respondents are ill once or less times a year. For comparison, approximately 40% of the schoolchildren assigned to the main education department are ill more than 1-2 times a year. In the special education department group, approximately 50% of the schoolchildren are ill more than 1-2 times a year.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider several compression techniques for the language modeling problem based on recurrent neural networks (RNNs). It is known that conventional RNNs, e.g, LSTM-based networks in language modeling, are characterized with either high space complexity or substantial inference time. This problem is especially crucial for mobile applications, in which the constant interaction with the remote server is inappropriate.
