- Abstract
Over the last two decades, more and more elderly care nurses, specialists and untrained, have chosen to go into temporary agency work rather than insitutionalized care. This qualitative study investigated the factors that attract elderly care nurses to temporary employment and possible adjustments organizations can make, to enhance their competitiveness over agencies. A structured literature review and the Job Demand-Resource Theory were used as the backdrop for qualitative interviews with temporary agency nurses, temporary agents and leaders of elderly care homes. The factors that attract elderly care nurses in Germany to temporary agency work are expectations of greater flexibility, higher salaries and a different balance of demands and resources. The expected flexibilities are however limited and higher salaries arequestionable. Temporary agency nurses are engaging in a form of job crafting behavior that has larger implications for the field. - Abstract
In this study, we explore students’ attitudes towards the use of digital tools in the learning of English in Sweden and Germany. English is the first compulsory foreign language in both countries. In both countries, there is also a new national strategy with proposals for actions to better exploit the potential of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education. The hypothesis of this study is that there will be differences in the treatment of, and attitudes to, digital tools between the students, and between the two countries. Data was collected through a semi-structured questionnaire answered by 155 German and 185 Swedish students, aged 15‒16. Our results show that the attitudes towards digital tools for language learning differs between the two countries. While the Swedish students use a variety of tools, there is a lack of access to digital learning tools in Germany. There are stark differences in the students’ attitudes towards how they seek value from the learning tools for English. The study shows differences in user behaviour and related appeals and challenges and discusses possible reasons for these differences in a cross-cultural context. The results give implications for the development and enrichment of digital tools in language learning.

- Abstract
This thesis explores the period of the Third Reich (1933-1945) in Germany. It focuses primarily on the experience of German women living during this time. It argues the Nazi regime created gendered spheres of activity within society and asserts these spheres limited the possibilities for women to participate in and resist the regime. Using specific case studies of women, combining primary and secondary sources, it describes women who participated in the regime and those who resisted; in doing so, it argues to fully analyze the women who resisted the Nazi regime in the Third Reich a new category of resistance is required: feminine resistance. The thesis concludes resistance itself is a gendered term of discourse and analysis and uses the stories of women in the Third Reich to assert a rethinking of resistance is necessary for future historical analysis in order to include more female voices within historical narratives.

- Abstract
There are over 65 million people all over the world, fleeing from war and other conflicts. Sweden has become one of the largest residence in Europe for refugees and only in 2015, 163 000 asylum seekers made their way into Sweden. The refugees and asylum seekers in Sweden are struggling to find work and it has been estimated to take approximately 7-10 years to establish themselves on the labour market. This thesis will study how the existing labour law affect refugees and asylum seekers entrance on the labour market. The refugees and asylum seekers legal right to work has been studied in relation to opportunities of actually finding work. International legal framework as well as the Swedish labour regulations has been studied to understand if the Swedish labour law comply with the international legal framework for labour market integration. A long side with Sweden, Germany has been facing similar challenges in order to succeed with labour market integration for refugees and asylum seekers. These countries labour legislation and integration efforts has been compared with each other to answer how their labour legislation differ from each other. The thesis has also been studying if a differentiated legislation can create an issue of discrimination on ethnical grounds.

- Abstract
Restricted until 26 Apr. 2012., This dissertation is comprised of three chapters that use microeconometric techniques to investigate the factors that affect people's well-being. In the first two chapters, well-being is defined as life satisfaction or health satisfaction. The first chapter explores how the movement from socialism to capitalism affected the life satisfaction and health satisfaction of East Germans relative to West Germans after reunification. The second chapter examines whether women are happier, less happy, or equally happy as men in countries at various stages of development. The third chapter examines whether pollution affects the academic performance of school children; their academic performance and achievements will have important implications for their future well-being.

- Abstract
Unrestricted, Although German Expressionism is a term that circulates widely, it is notoriously challenging to define. This dissertation constitutes an attempt to take up this challenge, proposing a new understanding of Expressionism that results from an investigation of the relationship between Expressionist painting and prints, and the most common form of imagery in early twentieth-century German public space--the color lithographic poster.; To reveal implications of this dynamic, I examine representative examples of commercial posters and Expressionist art alongside early twentieth-century German art criticism, art historical writings, and discussions of advertising, all of which explore the specificity and inter-relatedness, or unrelatedness, of these types of pictures. Expressionism and posters emerge as occupying similar discursive positions within broader discussions about the status of the image in modernity, serving as flash points around which uneasiness about and hopes for the image and the status of art in modernity were articulated.; My investigation spans the "Expressionist era" (1905-1921), beginning with its "birth," the formation of Künstlergruppe Brücke in Dresden, and concluding with the year following its "death" in 1920, announced by its former advocate Wilhelm Worringer. I trace transformations in "Expressionism" as it shifted from naming early manifestations of German experimental art, to declaring an aesthetically driven socialist stance, to designating a repeatable style that could be used as readily for political posters as it could be for nightclub interiors, advertising, or feature films.; Exceeding notions of "style" or "movement," Expressionism registered contemporary shifts in the field of the visual. It has operated, then and now, as a generative concept, producing ways of configuring and understanding the pictures that circulated in the public sphere. To do this, Expressionism required an extensive critical apparatus supported by sophisticated prin

- Abstract
Unrestricted, This work examines a group of opera fans called "Ringheads," who fanatically follow Wagner's four-part operatic event, the "Ring" cycle, from city to city. Discussing what draws this group to Wagner will reveal the differences between Wagner's music and other composers' works. Using interviews with various Ringheads, musicologists, and classical music experts, this piece will examine why Ringheads adore Wagner and why their presence still couldn't make LA Opera's "Ring" a financially successful event. The work provides background about Wagner's music and his theater in Bayreuth, Germany.

- Abstract
Les Bienveillantes (The Kindly Ones), caused a literary sensation in 2006. Described as "deliberately repellent" by The New York Times, Jonathan Littel's novel tells the story of World War II through the eyes of former SS officer Maximilien Aue. This is the first academic study of this controversial, best-selling work. Twenty-one leading scholars discuss the aesthetics, themes and characters of the novel, as well as formal aspects of Littel's writing. They tackle ideas surrounding parricide, genocide, ant-Semitism and the Holocaust as well as LIttel's portrayal of both historical and fictional characters. The collection offers a deeply varied range of approaches to Littel's work and is essential reading for anyone interested in representations of World War II, the Holocaust and contemporary French literature.

This paper has two aims. The first aim is to study and describe the manifest ideology of the EU's social policy. The second aim is to analyse to what extent the manifest ideology might be a part of building a common European identity - by finding common solutions to commonEuropean problems (problems, more or less constructed as common). The research is a critical ideology analysis, made up of a qualitative text analysis of EU social policy documents and National strategy reports (NSR). I ask two questions. Firstly, which are the main features in the manifest ideology of EU social policy as described in the texts? Secondly, what picture of a European identity is visible when reading the EU social policy texts and the National Strategy Reports? I have found five main features of the manifest ideology. These revolve around: how the world and change in the world are described according to the EU; the mutual interaction between the Lisbon objectives and greater social cohesion; the creating of social cohesion; the importance of how policies are constructed and implemented and the EU's self-image. The texts offer either two quite different pictures with regards to the question of a European identity or ones that is partly incoherent. The analysed EU policy texts put across a picture of a uniform Europe, suggest that there is something genuinely European and a common European identity. However, the picture obtained when reading the NSRs and the collected picture of the EU policy texts and the NSRs is much less coherent. The paper argues that the manifest ideology could be a part of building a European identity, but it does not manage to prove that it actually is.

- Abstract
In this paper, we are going to report on the results of an exploratory piece of research about the typical front-end-related activities in 28 innovation projects carried out by 14 German and 13 Japanese companies to reduce project uncertainty. In all cases we observed a range of activities to reduce project specific risks and revealed differences in the practice of innovation management in both the German and Japanese companies. We interviewed managers of 13 Japanese and 14 German enterprises concerning 14 Japanese and 14 German New Product Development projects. The focus of our research was the so called “fuzzy front end”, activities and typical deliverables in the innovation process which might be affected by front end management practice. Overall, in the case of the German as well as the Japanese projects, the uncertainties affected by the market or technology could successfully be reduced during the “fuzzy front end” and the majority of projects achieved their objectives and efficiency targets. Nevertheless, our study revealed differences in the way such uncertainties were reduced by the companies in Japan and Germany. Generally speaking, the 14 Japanese projects relied on a thorough planning, delegation of front end activities and strict controlling mechanisms to minimize deviations from front end specifications later in the innovation process and hence, achieved efficiency. In contrast, in the majority of the 14 German projects we could neither observe such a formal planning nor such an intensive controlling procedure supported by methods and tools as in the case of the Japanese projects. Instead, the companies in our German sample integrated relevant functions like R&D, marketing, sales, production or customer service from the beginning of the innovation process, usually already during the idea generation phase, to ensure that all critical information and perspectives were taken into consideration right from the beginning, to reduce uncertainties and la

- Abstract
This thesis is a comparative study of youth and community work in three countries. Using field work in Australia and Singapore, and a study of German literature I examine the way youth and community workers in these three countries theorise about their educational practice. The following questions guide the research: • Do youth and community workers practice informal education? • What is successful informal education practice in youth and community work? • Does the educational practice of youth and community workers serve to control its learners? • Can the educational practice of youth and community workers emancipate learners? The starting point for the research is an examination of informal and popular education in Australian youth and community work. I have practised, researched and taught youth and community work in Australia for almost twenty years. Drawing upon this experience and a series of interviews I describe and discuss the contradictions, ambiguities and different consciousnesses that characterise the way many Australian youth and community workers theorise about their practice. I then seek insights for Australian theory and practice in German literature about youth and community work. German scholars have engaged in educational theorising about youth and community work dating back into the nineteenth century. I give an account of the history of this theorising and then analyse more recent debates between advocates of the critical-emancipatory, instrumental and historical-materialist perspectives. In Singapore, youth and community work, if judged solely in terms of participation, is very successful, and I look for explanations for this success. Youth and community workers in Singapore are open about serving the interests of the state. Yet they use language and espouse goals similar to that of their Australian and German counterparts who, for the most part, claim to serve the interests of their communities. The study of this seeming paradox enables me to

- Abstract
This thesis investigates the employment of British aircraft against German submarines during the final years of the First World War, an issue that appears only marginally in other studies because it does not clearly fall into naval or air power history. A focused study is needed to assess the effectiveness of the effort and the veracity of the secondary literature. The Royal Naval Air Service invested heavily in aircraft of all types in order to counter the U-boat. Under the Royal Air Force, the air campaign against U-boats continued uninterrupted. Aircraft bombed German U-boat bases in Flanders, conducted area and hunting patrols around the coasts of Britain, and escorted merchant convoys to safety. Despite the fact that aircraft acting alone destroyed only one U-boat during the war, their overall contribution to foiling U-boat attacks was significant. Only five merchant vessels succumbed to submarine attack when convoyed by a combined air and surface escort during World War I. This thesis is organised thematically. Early chapters examine the aircraft and weapons technology, aircrew training, and aircraft production issues that shaped this campaign. Then, a close examination of anti-submarine operations that is, bombing, patrols, and escort yields a significantly different judgment from existing interpretations of these operations. A chapter on the British official assessments, which provided a basis for much of the secondary literature, demonstrates that this campaign was often misrepresented because it was either used to promote specific agendas or it was inappropriately employed as evidence in unrelated historical arguments. The next chapter examines the German view of aircraft effectiveness, through German actions, prisoner interrogations, official histories, and memoirs, to provide a comparative judgment. The conclusion closes with a brief narrative of post-war air anti-submarine developments and a summary of findings., The original document contains color images.

- Abstract
Drift waves are studied in a high density helicon plasma in linear magnetic geometry. Drift waves are destabilized in the pressure gradient region by the ambient magnetic field acting as the control parameter. Saturated drift modes as well as turbulent states are observed by spatiotemporal probe diagnostics. Their propagation and radial mode structure is related to the time averaged plasma density and plasma potential profiles., Pub. in International Conference on Phenomena in Ionized Gases (26th), v4 p159-160, July 2003. The need for a reduction of engineering time and cost during the last years made an optimization of the development processes inevitable, In order to defend their market shares, all companies were forced to employ more efficient development methodologies and to bring all their software tools up to date, As a result the CAD world for new projects has essentially changed from the 2D to 3D world, However, from an early stage it became evident that 3D modelling alone was not sufficient to achieve the required benefits, It was realised that only with a sensible administration and steering of all the new 3D data can the advantages of a virtual working environment be fully utilised, The realisation of a Digital Mock-up (DMU) requires design methodologies and processes adopted to the companies needs that will ensure that all data is up to date and of good quality, This presentation will discuss the realisation of a virtual working environment in military aircraft development The DMU world with CATIA, 4D-Navigator and VPM at EADS Military Aircraft in Ottobrunn, Germany is described exemplary, Presented at RTO Applied Vehicle Technology Panel (AVT) Symposium held in Paris, France on 22-25 Apr 2002.

- Abstract
This report results from tasking Nu-Modeling, Inc. as follows: the contractor will perform detailed numerical predictions of the flowfield in the neighborhood of the microcavities that are embedded in wall-coatings. The key deliverable of the proposed work will be the ability to put forward an improved integral condition to replace what is used in the current theoretical approach. This will be determined numerically at each of the parameters of the problem. The numerical effort required for the solution of the problem at a single value of each of the parameters involved limits to subset of the (M, Re, m, d, d/D, d/s) parameter space that can be investigated within the available year. It is intended to approximate existing analytic results of Fedorov first, at a single set of parameters, by imposing his pressure boundary condition at the lips of the microcavities (i.e. taking D=0. The effect of nonzero values of this parameter will then be examined, keeping all other parameters in the problem constant. Subsequently, the effect of d, and 5 will be investigated, at constant D and 2(d+s). In all D1 0 cases to be studied, integral boundary conditions will be provided to the parties involved in the project. Progress of the proposed research will be monitored by means of one intermediate and one final report., The original document contains color images.

- Abstract
Authors and historians have made the words Market-Garden and intelligence failure virtually synonymous. Is this really the case? Operation Market-Garden, the plan envisioned by Field Marshal Montgomery, would open the gate into Germany and simultaneously force General Eisenhower to abandon his broad-front strategy in favor of his narrow-front strategy. Executed on 17 September 1944, this operation became one of the greatest defeats suffered by the Allies during the Second World War. Until 1974, when the British Government declassified Ultra, no one beyond the producers and consumers of Ultra intelligence knew of its existence. With the program now declassified, it was learned that Ultra allowed Allied commanders an unprecedented capability to read high-level German messages that were thought to be unbreakable. The release of these documents now showed that senior Allied commanders knew that the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions were located on the corridor that the Allies planned to make their narrow-front thrust on. Despite this new information, numerous authors still continue to describe Market-Garden as an intelligence failure. While intelligence was not perfect in supporting this operation, it is not justifiable to say that Operation Market-Garden failed due to the intelligence systems failure to warn commanders of the threat to the operation., The original document contains color images.

- Abstract
Most Americans first heard of the European Union with the mandatory introduction of the Euro into 12 of its member countries on 1 January 2002.1 However, the European Union has been in existence for the latter half of the 20th Century. As a European Union commentator has stated, For some it is simply a set of intergovernmental institutions, useful for specific purposes, but without any wider implications. For others, it is a device in a strategy which has lost its purpose: that of cornering the USSR or containing Germany; for others it is a delusion of European unity which now has to be thrown off in order to preserve the natural and enduring primacy of the nation states; others think it is the transcending of evil in the lives of nations, a unity which reflects the greater good for individuals. Finally, there is the view that it is none of these, that it is something unique in relations between states which have retained their sovereignty and equality.

- Abstract
Mathematical models of blood flow are inevitably embedded in models of human thermoregulation because they take the role of the most significant heat distributor in models of the human thermal system 14, 6. Models of human thermoregulation have a wide range of applications, e.g. for the prediction of the impact of accidents, diseases and clinical treatments (see 14 and the references therein). The application of our interest is the prediction of the influence of cooling on the heat distribution in premature infants, see Section 2. In Section 3 we discuss the requirements of a reliable thermoregulation model while the governing equation is described in paragraph four. The employed blood flow model is discussed within Section 5. Section 6 deals with numerical results, followed by concluding remarks in the last paragraph., The original document contains color images. All DTIC reproductions will be in black and white. - Abstract
One goal of the research initiative is to foster both the correct commercial code development and its proper use for the benefit of research and technological development. The objectives are to: define the problem of software code verification and validation, define the problem of precision testing for software code verification and validation, establish guidelines for reliable and safe numerical simulations, develop standards for numerical simulations, and define qualifications and requirements for FE/FD-Code users. These objectives may hold in general, but in order to restricted time and money we will first focus on a well defined class of problems: Contact Detonations and Impact/Penetration Problems. This is a first necessary step towards the final goal of an international standard.

- Abstract
The United States Army has changed from a Cold War threat based, forward deployed force, to a CONUS based full spectrum, threats-adaptive, capabilities based force as seen throughout the 1990's and 2000. Operationally, the Army is transforming to provide strategic dominance across the entire spectrum of operations. As outlined in Joint Vision 2010, Army Vision 2010 and Installation Vision 2010, the Army must be able to project a ready force rapidly, world wide to the point of decision. In order for the Army to be relevant now and in the future, units must be capable of deploying and redeploying. This is a basic operational and strategic requirement that involves the delineation of responsibilities between the tactical deploying/redeploying unit and those units in support of them. This monograph focuses on the issue: Do Garrison Commands in CONUS and Area Support Groups (ASG)/Base Support Battalions (BSB), OCONUS, have responsibilities for warfighting units deployments and redeployments? Structurally, the monograph outlines the history, methods and results of the formalization of installation management. The development of installation doctrine as outlined in FM 100-22, Installation Management, is addressed to describe responsibilities for deployment and redeployment. A CONUS and OCONUS based paradigm for Garrison and Area Support Group responsibilities for deploying/redeploying units is presented. The Garrison Command at Ft. Drum, NY, in support of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) and the 104 th Area Support Group in Hanau Germany in support of 1 st Armor Division are presented. The monograph concludes that Garrison, ASG and BSB commands have critical responsibilities in supporting warfighting unit deployments, sustainment for forces and families staying behind and redeployments., The original document contains color images.

TThis document investigated structural and optical properties of MOCVD-grown single and stacked InGaAs insertions formed with and without annealing step after thin layer overgrowth. We found that this ovrergrowth/annealing procedure results in elimination of dislocated InGaAs clusters, thus, only the structures grown with such an approach are suitable for long-wavelength laser applications for the growth mode chosen in this work. Additionally. according to our results, growth of stacked long-wavelength QDs is principally possible only when QDs are subiected to the clustenelimination procedure., This article is from Nanostructures: Physics and Technology Intl Symposium (8th), p. 355-358 This article is from ADA407315 Nanostructures: Physics and Technology International Symposium (8th) Held in St. Petersburg, Russia on June 19-23, 2000 Proceedings

Parametric approximation of curves offers the possibility of increasing the order of approximation by using the additional parameters in the parameterization of the curve. This has been studied in several papers, see e.g.,. The resulting problems are highly nonlinear. We introduce curvature continuous regular free-form surfaces with triangular control nets. These surfaces are composed of quartic box spline surfaces, and are piecewise polynomial multisided patches of total degree 8 which minimize some energy integral. - Abstract
In the presence of oscillating singularities the standard Wavelet Transfrom Modulus Maxima (WTMM) method gives irrelevant information on the Hoelder regularity of the function. In general, two exponents h,beta are necessary to describe the singular behavior of a function f(x), namely the Hoelder exponent h and the oscillation exponent beta describing the local power law divergence of the instantaneous frequency. If f(x) contains oscillating singularities the regularity of the primitive of f(x) depends on beta. In this case the Hoelder exponent does not increase by 1 as in the case of a cusp singularity but by beta + 1. Thus, the singularity spectrum of general functions depends on both exponents, D(h,beta). In order to extract Hoelder exponents and to quantify at the same time the oscillating behavior we propose to use a family of complex progressive wavelets ?psi sub n! with an increasing number of vanishing moments., Pres. at Fractal 2000, "Complexity and Fractals in the Sciences", 6th International Multidisciplinary Conference, 16-19 Apr 2000, Singapore. --Original contains color plates: All DTIC reproductions will be in black and white. The Third European Conference on Silicon Carbide and Related Materials (ECSCRM2000), held September 3-7, 2000 in Kloster Banz, Germany, developed into a truly important forum in the field of wide bandgap semiconductors. All continents - some 320 participants from 21 different countries - were represented and 15 exhibitors maintained booths and demonstrated the increasingly industrial interest in and the economic impact of the wide bandgap semiconductors. Scientists from Universities and Industry discussed the exciting progress in the fields of SiC and III-Nitrides. Many young scientists have been among the participants; they are regarded as the guarantee to successfully solve the forthcoming tasks. These proceedings reveal the present experimental and theoretical knowledge on the growth of bulk crystals and epitaxial layers, the mechanical, thermal and electronic properties of the grown material, the development of suitable processes and electronic devices, which will have a profound effect on society's ability to better utilize its strategic resources in the future., Proceedings of European Conference on Silicon Carbide and Related Materials, Kloster Banz, Germany, 3-7 Sep 2000.

- Abstract
The dissertation concerns the concepts of GPS (Global Positioning System), a term originally used by the United States Department of Defense, and GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System). The NAVSTAR GPS, or Navigation System Using Time and Ranging, and how it is built and functions, is the subject of the first chapter following the introduction. The parameters, methods of observation, and sources of possible error are then outlines. The focus then shifts to GLONASS and, more importantly, to comparing UPS and GLONASS. The next section concerns pseudolites, which subsequently are integrated into working models involving a pulse scheme. The results and an overview of other potential methods comprise the final chapter., Text in German, Abstract in German and English.
