This paper presents a condensed review of the European smart body area network (BAN) standardization work and its already published standards. The work is carried out under the ETSI Technical Committee (TC) SmartBAN. The goal of ETSI TC SmartBAN is to define and develop new European BAN standards; fostering the successful market adoption of wireless BAN technology by providing a standardized way to bring new interoperable products into the health, medical, sport, leisure and IoT markets, targeting to global exploitation. TC SmartBAN covers wireless communications, especially the physical and medium access control layers, associated security, semantic interoperability and open data representation, which are necessary features in the data transmissions, as well as building blocks of the future smart coordinator. The use of smart coordinator centralizes the network intelligence to the hub, which enables implementation of simple nodes. The SmartBAN approach will be computationally light, and it supports reliable operations across heterogeneous networks. Due to the semantic approach in all functional levels, SmartBAN also supports high interoperability. For emergency traffic, SmartBAN provides different priority classes and fast channel access associated with a low latency. Novel concept adopted in the SmartBAN for high-priority traffic is a multi-use channel access, which can also improve the spectral efficiency. Not only on-body nodes and applications, TC SmartBAN is considering in-body communications for capsule endoscopy. In addition, SmartBAN collaborates with other standardization groups, such as oneM2M and AIOTI, to widen the impact of its work.

Ventricular growth is widely considered to be an important feature in the adverse progression of heart diseases, whereas reverse ventricular growth (or reverse remodeling) is often considered to be a favorable response to clinical intervention. In recent years, a number of theoretical models have been proposed to model the process of ventricular growth while little has been done to model its reverse. Based on the framework of volumetric strain-driven finite growth with a homeostatic equilibrium range for the elastic myofiber stretch, we propose here a reversible growth model capable of describing both ventricular growth and its reversal. We used this model to construct a semi-analytical solution based on an idealized cylindrical tube model, as well as numerical solutions based on a truncated ellipsoidal model and a human left ventricular model that was reconstructed from magnetic resonance images. We show that our model is able to predict key features in the end-diastolic pressure-volume relationship that were observed experimentally and clinically during ventricular growth and reverse growth. We also show that the residual stress fields generated as a result of differential growth in the cylindrical tube model are similar to those in other nonidentical models utilizing the same geometry.

Chemical conditions for thorium phosphate gel preparation have been determined. The transparency is of good optical quality and the gel is very stable for a long time. Under drying condition, this gel can give rise to the xerogel which is still transparent. We can also prepare this xerogel by simple evaporation at room temperature of a very concentrated solution of thorium phosphate. From this viscous medium, the xerogel can be obtained in various kinds of shapes : threads, slabs and blocks. Solidification time depends on the final volume desired and spreads from few minutes to several weeks. Absorption spectrum of pure gel and xerogel have been recorded. Gel and xerogel doped with very well known probes like Nd3+ and Er3+ were examined to compare their optical properties with aqueous medium of the same chemical composition. Eu3+ doped gel and xerogel were also studied using their fluorescence properties. The optical properties of Cr3+ in doped gel and xerogel allowed us to determine the kinetics of hydration sphere modification during the drying period. Finally, as xerogel synthesis takes place at room temperature, fragile organic dye can be used as dopant, so Rhodamine 6G absorption and emission spectra have been studied in these conditions. When, at that time, the xerogel is doped with Coumarin 460 and Tb3+ an energy transfer is observed between dye and Tb3+ ions, which contributes to enhance the fluorescence of Tb3+ ions. Eu3+ behaves similarly.
