Most individuals are latently infected with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), and it is well-established that HSV-1 establishes latency in sensory neurons of peripheral ganglia. However, it was recently proposed that latent HSV-1 is also present in immune cells recovered from the ganglia of experimentally infected mice. Here, we reanalyzed the single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-Seq) data that formed the basis for that conclusion. Unexpectedly, off-target priming in 3’ scRNA-Seq experiments enabled the detection of non-polyadenylated HSV-1 latency-associated transcript (LAT) intronic RNAs. However, LAT reads were near-exclusively detected in mixed populations of cells undergoing cell death. Specific loss of HSV-1 LAT and neuronal transcripts during quality control filtering indicated widespread destruction of neurons, supporting the presence of contaminating cell-free RNA in other cells following tissue processing. In conclusion, the reported detection of latent HSV-1 in non-neuronal cells is best explained using compromised scRNA-Seq datasets. IMPORTANCE Most people are infected with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) during their life. Once infected, the virus generally remains in a latent (silent) state, hiding within the neurons of peripheral ganglia. Periodic reactivation (reawakening) of the virus may cause fresh diseases such as cold sores. A recent study using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-Seq) proposed that HSV-1 can also establish latency in the immune cells of mice, challenging existing dogma. We reanalyzed the data from that study and identified several flaws in the methodologies and analyses performed that invalidate the published conclusions. Specifically, we showed that the methodologies used resulted in widespread destruction of neurons which resulted in the presence of contaminants that confound the data analysis. We thus conclude that there remains little to no evidence for HSV-1 latency in immune cells.

Drones are currently being explored for safety-critical applications where human agents are expected to evolve in their vicinity. In such applications, robust people avoidance must be provided by fusing a number of sensing modalities in order to avoid collisions. Currently however, people detection systems used on drones are solely based on standard cameras besides an emerging number of works discussing the fusion of imaging and event-based cameras. On the other hand, radar-based systems provide up-most robustness towards environmental conditions but do not provide complete information on their own and have mainly been investigated in automotive contexts, not for drones. In order to enable the fusion of radars with both event-based and standard cameras, we present KUL-UAVSAFE, a first-of-its-kind dataset for the study of safety-critical people detection by drones. In addition, we propose a baseline CNN architecture with cross-fusion highways and introduce a curriculum learning strategy for multi-modal data termed SAUL, which greatly enhances the robustness of the system towards hard RGB failures and provides a significant gain of 15% in peak F1 score compared to the use of BlackIn, previously proposed for cross-fusion networks. We demonstrate the real-time performance and feasibility of the approach by implementing the system in an edge-computing unit. We release our dataset and additional material in the project home page.

At a time when the theory of trans-nationalism has become most relevant, the 2011 “Arab Spring” stands as a turning point in the modern history of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. From Tunisia, to Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain and Syria, domestic policies can no longer remain the way they used to be in the past four decades. The current transitional period necessitates that Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), which played a major role in revolutions, take a more structured action and carry out a serious planning process to build a viable democracy for their repressed societies. This study focuses on the role of NGOs in shaping national policies in the MENA transitional context highlighting the various opportunities ahead of these NGOs, all while keeping in mind that the “Arab Spring” is still at its infancy stage. In transitional contexts, national policy decisions can be highly influenced by the role of local civil society organizations despite several limitations and challenges. However, this is not to suggest that these organizations, within the context of this study, have the capacity to be in full control of decision-making processes at the level of the state; whether in terms of domestic or foreign policies. They are rather one of the key players through their participation in the political, social, economic, and cultural causes. NGOs can be at the heart of any societal or political change, and are very much able to affect national domestic policies as well as foreign policies of a certain nation state. Moreover, the paper discusses in detail the definition of NGOs, types, rights and responsibilities, roles and domestic legislation. Tunisia and Egypt are the two main case studies assessed in this research paper. A literature review of this topic shows us that there have been several books, reports, articles, studies, lectures, courses and university programs about NGOs: their emergence, role, performance, successes and failures. This paper discusses two antennas monolithically integrated on-chip to be used respectively for wireless powering and UWB transmission of a tag designed and fabricated in 0.18-mu m CMOS technology. A multiturn loop-dipole structure with inductive and resistive stubs is chosen for both antennas. Using these on-chip antennas, the chip employs asymmetric communication links: at downlink, the tag captures the required supply wirelessly from the received RF signal transmitted by a reader and, for the uplink, ultra-wideband impulse-radio (UWB-IR), in the 3.1-10.6-GHz band, is employed instead of backscattering to achieve extremely low power and a high data rate up to 1 Mb/s. At downlink with the on-chip power-scavenging antenna and power-management unit circuitry properly designed, 7.5-cm powering distance has been achieved, which is a huge improvement in terms of operation distance compared with other reported tags with on-chip antenna. Also, 7-cm operating distance is achieved with the implemented on-chip UWB antenna. The tag can be powered up at all the three ISM bands of 915 MHz and 2.45 GHz, with off-chip antennas, and 5.8 GHz with the integrated on-chip antenna. The tag receives its clock and the commands wirelessly through the modulated RF powering-up signal. Measurement results show that the tag can operate up to 1 Mb/s data rate with a minimum input power of -19.41 dBm at 915-MHz band, corresponding to 15.7 m of operation range with an off-chip 0-dB gain antenna. This is a great improvement compared with conventional passive RFIDs in term of data rate and operation distance. The power consumption of the chip is measured to be just 16.6 mu W at the clock frequency of 10 MHz at 1.2-V supply. In addition, in this paper, for the first time, the radiation pattern of an on-chip antenna at such a frequency is measured. Antibiotic and antifungal agents used in supportive care regimens for bone marrow transplantation recipients contribute to a significant dose-modifying effect of otherwise lethal total body irradiation. To determine whether drugs used in supportive care and other commonly used antibiotics such as tetracycline function as radiation protectors or damage mitigators in vitro, 13 drugs were tested for radiation protection and radiation damage mitigation of 32D cl 3 hematopoietic progenitor cells in clonagenic survival curves in vitro. Antibiotic/Antifungal agents including cilastatin, amikacin, ceftazidine, vancomycin, tetracycline, doxycycline, ciprofloxacin, metronidazole, methacycline, minocycline, meclocycline, Oxytetracycline and rolitetracycline were added in 1, 10, or 100 micromolar concentrations to murine interleukin-3-dependent hematopoietic progenitor cell line 32D cl 3 cells either before or after irradiation of 0 to 8 Gy. Control irradiated 32D cl 3 cells showed radiosensitivity comparable to freshly explanted mouse marrow hematopoietic progenitor cells (D0 1.1 ±0.1 Gy, Ñ 15±0.4). Positive control GS-nitroxide JP4-039 (known radiation mitigator) treated 32D cl 3 cells were radioresistant (D0 1.2±0.1, Ñ 5.8±2.4 (p=0.009)). Of the 13 drugs tested, tetracycline was found to be a significant radiation mitigator (D0 0.9±0.1, Ñ 13.9±0.4 (p=0.0027)). Thus, the radiation dose-modifying effect of some antibiotics, but not those currently used in the supportive care (antibiotic/antifungal regimens) for marrow transplant patients, may act as radiation damage mitigators for hematopoietic cells as well as decreasing the growth and inflammatory response to microbial pathogens.

The catalytic process appears to be highly dependent on the amount of DMFc. Kinetic control, internal diffusion control and external diffusion control can be obtained only by varying the amount of incorporated DMFc. It was shown that the Eadie-Hofstee plot is a particularly useful tool in diagnosis of diffusional limitations. The high efficiency of electrochemical regeneration of high amounts of DMFc∗ surrounding GOX solves the problem of co-substrate transport. Des lots commerciaux de cacao Amelonado de Côte d'Ivoire sont torréfiés sous forme de nibs (fèves décortiquées et grossièrement broyées) dans une étuve ventilée à des températures de 110 à 150¼C. La consommation des précurseurs d'arômes (sucres acides aminés libres), le développement des pyrazines et la qualité organoleptique des chocolats correspondants sont analysés. La teneur en acides aminés libres des nibs de cacao est une fonction linéaire décroissante de la température pour des torréfactions de vingt-cinq minutes. A 140¼C, leur consommation est inférieure à 40 %. Le rapport de la consommation des sucres (fructose et glucose) à la consommation des acides aminés libres est proche de 3 pour les cacaos les plus aromatiques et supérieur à 2 tant que l'échantillon ne présente pas de goûts liés à une surtorréfaction. La teneur en sucres réducteurs apparaît comme le facteur limitant du développement de l'arôme. Il n'apparaît pas de relation simple entre teneur en pyrazines et qualité organoleptique

Respiratory response to inhalation of fine particles has been investigated for the aerosol generated by welding. Particles were sampled using a pair of 5-stage cascade impactors operating at 1 l./min flow rate. The subject exhaled into one impactor through an air ballast arrangement, and the other impactor simultaneously sampled the surrounding air. Particle size fractions were analyzed for principal elemental constituents from sulphur to lead using proton induced X-ray emission, PIXE. The results indicated a complex respiratory response, including both increase in particle size due to exposure to high humidity in the respiratory tract and deposition of particles during inhalation. The response was found to be different for the element group Mn, Cr, Fe, Ni compared to the group K, Ca, Ti by observing the associations among the elements as a function of particle size in the inhaled and exhaled aerosol. However, for respiratory deposition efficiency alone in all runs averaged together, no systematic differences between the different elements are demonstrated at the 99 % confidence level.

[Figure 1; see abstract in PDF for details]. It is a well-known fact that dielectric coated infinite metallic structures such as planes and wires can propagate "surface modes". We are here chiefly concerned with a two-dimensional case. There is no theoretical difficulty in extending our solution to three-dimensional structures. We are dealing here with a grounded dielectric slab of permittivity ε and thickness a. (The case in which the electric wall is replaced by a magnetic one involves only slight modifications.) The half-space over the slab is a dielectric of permittivity 1. E modes and H modes can propagate in the slab. They are the so- called "trapped waves". The number of modes is connected with ε and a. As an example of the treatment of the general case, we shall suppose that a is small enough to propagate only one E mode. Extension to the H case or to the multimode case is obvious. We then suppose (see Fig. 1) that only one mode is propagating, coming from z = +∞. This trapped wave will be diffracted by a semi infinite metallic sheet of zero thickness, which lies on x = d , z < 0. We are mainly interested in reflection and transmission coefficients for the trapped modes, the radiated power, and the far-field pattern.

Some numerical experiments are described for solving one-dimensional partial differential equations by explicit finite-difference schemes. The numerical schemes were operated in their unstable regions in order to illustrate the effect of numerical instabilities. As expected, it was found that numerical instabilities occurred when the Courant, Fredrichs, and Lewy criterion was violated. Theoretical instability growth rates were compared with actual growth rates of the computed results and found very close agreement. The initial numerical noise from which the instability grew was found and is the expected single-precision truncation error of the computer used in the calculations.

Although no explicit general solution is known for the vector integral equation satisfied by the current density vector on a conducting surface, it is shown in the following report that the vector equation can be "scalarized" in the case of a quadratic conducting surface.

The propagation of electromagnetic waves along an infinite "corrugated surface" is investigated by means of integral equations and Fourier transform techniques. Results are obtained which take into account the finite distance between the corrugations. In the E case, we obtain in quite a natural way results similar to those previously obtained by R. Hurd.

In a previous report [G. Weill, Propagation of Electromagnetic Waves along Corrugated Lines, ASTIA Document AD 115 049] an approximate formula for the constant of propagation has been derived from an exact integral equation. It is the purpose of this report to check experimentally the accuracy of our formula.
