Southern Black Korhaan is “Vulnerable” to extinction and a South African endemic that is restricted to the area of the Northern Cape Province that is west of the Great Escarpment, and to the area south of the Great Escarpment in the Western Cape, and the western section of the Eastern Cape Province. The 1990, 2014, and 2020 land use land cover (LULC) databases prepared for South Africa were used to determine the LULC categories that best describe suitable habitat for the birds using beta regressions and data on the exact locality of the birds from BirdLasser. The South African Bird Atlas Project (SABAP) reporting rates were used to determine the change in the relative abundance of the birds between the first and second SABAP. Beta regression models were compiled using the bird’s reporting rate and the total surface area, and three other landscape metrics, of the per pentad LULC categories considered to be suitable habitat for them. These models and the SABAP reporting rates revealed that Southern Black Korhaan is adversely affected by the loss of, especially, its fynbos habitat to crop agriculture. In 2020, the area of suitable habitat available to the bird was estimated to be 2,035,526 ha on terrain with a slope of ≤4°. Southern Black Korhaan remains “Vulnerable” to extinction because of the continued decline of >30% in the size of its population over three generations (31 years). The cumulative effects of habitat fragmentation and loss on Southern Black Korhaan and other threatened taxa must be mitigated by conserving and, where appropriate, rehabilitating suitable habitat (e.g. Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve’s Corridors and Rehabilitation Project) in the protected areas, critical biodiversity areas, and ecosystem support areas identified in the provincial spatial conservation plans. Together these areas form a perforated landscape that ensures maximum connectivity between the remaining patches of indigenous habitat.

Food insecurity and diet-related diseases do not only have detrimental effects to human health, but are also underpinned by food systems that are environmentally unsustainable and culturally disconnected. Ensuring access to a healthy, affordable, and sustainable diet is one of the greatest challenges facing many low- and middle-income countries such as South Africa. These challenges in accessing a diverse diet often persist despite biocultural richness. For example, South Africa is globally recognised for its rich biodiversity, an ecologically unrivalled coastline, and a rich body of traditional knowledge amongst wild-food users. In this paper, we explore the potential that coastal wild foods as neglected and underutilised species (NUS) can play in local food systems in South Africa's Western Cape Province. Following a previously established transformation lab (T-Lab) method, here we report the observations and outcomes emerging from a two-day workshop held in May 2019 with a group of 40 actors involved in the local food system in diverse ways. Farmers, small-scale fishers, indigenous knowledge holders, representatives from non-profit organisations, chefs, bartenders, academics, activists, conservationists, and government officials were brought together with the aim of strengthening an emerging coalition of coastal wild food actors. Findings highlighted the existence of a fledgling economy for coastal wild foods, driven by high-end chefs. The T-Lab was essentially a tool of knowledge co-production around food system transformation and helped to surface deeply embedded issues on land, race, history, and culture that warrant engagement if a better food system is to emerge. In a country that is drought prone and vulnerable to climate change, a more resilient and sustainable food system is a necessity. Many plant species have floral morphologies that restrict access to floral resources, such as pollen or nectar, and only a subset of floral visitors can perform the handling behaviors required to extract restricted resources. Due to the time and energy required to extract resources from morphologically complex flowers, these plant species potentially compete for pollinators with co-flowering plants that have more easily accessible resources. A widespread floral mechanism restricting access to pollen is the presence of tubular anthers that open through small pores or slits (poricidal anthers). Some bees have evolved the capacity to remove pollen from poricidal anthers using vibrations, giving rise to the phenomenon of buzz-pollination. These bee vibrations that are produced for pollen extraction are presumably energetically costly, and to date, few studies have investigated whether buzz-pollinated flowers may be at a disadvantage when competing for pollinators' attention with plant species that present unrestricted pollen resources. Here, we studied Cyanella hyacinthoides (Tecophilaeaceae), a geophyte with poricidal anthers in the hyperdiverse Cape Floristic Region of South Africa, to assess how the composition and relative abundance of flowers with easily accessible pollen affect bee visitation to a buzz-pollinated plant. We found that the number of pollinator species of C. hyacinthoides was not influenced by community composition. However, visitation rates to C. hyacinthoides were reduced when the relative abundances of flowers with more accessible resources were high. Visitation rates were strongly associated with petal color, showing that flower color is important in mediating these interactions. We conclude that buzz-pollinated plants might be at a competitive disadvantage when many easily accessible pollen sources are available, particularly when competitor species share its floral signals.

The fynbos biome is a natural splendour in South Africa, however, not a lot of people are educated on the complexities of the biome and how to conserve it for future generations. A small farm school ruin situated between Franschhoek and the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve has fallen into disuse and decay but planted a seed for many possibilities. The educational background and location of the ruin present the opportunity for a new intervention, driven by Cape Nature, that builds on the past function, creating a place that educates hikers, tourists, and locals alike on the importance of fynbos. A Fynbos Interpretation and Regeneration Centre is proposed to bridge the gap between human and nature through architectural spaces. In order to create a symbiotic relationship between man and nature the proposed intervention builds on the past, to educate the present and future generations about the fynbos biome. Time serves as an important element in the Fynbos Interpretation and Regeneration Centre as it is the architect of ruin, thus time and ruin will be used as tools to instil nature appreciation. The design is intended to decay, allowing nature to take back the place, leaving behind fragments of the past whilst still serving the intended purpose of celebrating fynbos. With time the proposal aims to regenerate the surrounding landscape, whereafter it will leave behind a ruin that continues to enhance the phenomenological experience of the place.

Although best known for its extraordinary radiations of endemic plant species, the South African fynbos is home to a great diversity of phytophagous insects, including butterflies in the genus Chrysoritis (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae). These butterflies are remarkably uniform morphologically; nevertheless, they comprise 43 currently accepted species and 68 currently valid taxonomic names. While many species have highly restricted, dot-like distributions, others are widespread. Here, we investigate the phylogenetic and biogeographic history underlying their diversification by analyzing molecular markers from 406 representatives of all described species throughout their respective ranges. We recover monophyletic clades for both C. chrysaor and C. thysbe species-groups, and identify a set of lineages that fall between them. The estimated age of divergence for the genus is 32 Mya, and we document significantly rapid diversification of the thysbe species-group in the Pleistocene (~2 Mya). Using ancestral geographic range reconstruction, we show that West Fynbos is the most likely region of origin for the radiation of the thysbe species-group. The colonization of this region occurred 9 Mya and appears to have been followed by a long period of relative stasis before a recent increase in diversification. Thus, the thysbe radiation does not appear to have resulted from the colonization of new biogeographic areas. Rather, the impact of species interactions (with ants and plants), the appearance of key innovations, and/or the opening of new ecological niche space in the region might explain the sudden burst of speciation that occurred in this group 2 Mya. The biogeographic model suggests two different diversification processes with few historical cross-colonisations, one in eastern South Africa for the C. chrysaor group and the other in western South Africa for the remaining taxa. [EN]: Studying the diet of wild animals is central for understanding their flexibility in food requirements. The Black Harrier Circus maurus is an endangered raptor in South Africa and Namibia. To date, information about the diet of the species is insufficient for a comprehensive understanding of its ecology. We studied the diet composition of breeding Black Harriers using c. 1 000 pellets (>1 700 identified prey) collected at nest sites in two geographical regions (coastal vs inland) over 10 breeding seasons (2006–2015). We show the importance of small mammals in Black Harrier diet (64.4% and 78.2% of prey and consumed biomass, respectively), with the four-striped mouse Rhabdomys pumilio being a main trophic resource. We also reveal the importance of birds and reptiles as alternative prey, particularly in inland regions, and show inter-annual variations in diet in both regions. Our study confirms that this species can be considered a small mammal specialist. Specialist predators are more vulnerable than generalist ones and diet specialisation has been linked with a poorer conservation status in other species. Our results thus have implications for the conservation of this species in southern Africa. Le busard noir Circus maurus est un rapace rare et menacé, endémique d’Afrique méridionale. L’information actuelle sur son alimentation est insuffisante pour une compréhension globale de leur écologie. Dans cet article, nous étudions le régime alimentaire d’individus reproducteurs en utilisant l´analyse d’environ 1 000 pelotes de rejection (>1 700 proies identifiées) collectées au nid dans deux régions géographiques contrastées (côtière et intérieur) pendant 10 saisons de reproduction (2006–2015). Nous montrons l’importance des micromammifères dans l’alimentation du busard noir (64.4 % de proies et 78.2% de biomasse consommée) et en particulier du rat de champ rayé Rhabdomys pumilio qui est la principale ressource trophique. Nous révélons également l’importance des oiseaux et reptiles comme proies alternatives, notamment dans les régions de l’intérieur, et montrons des variations interannuelles du régime alimentaire dans les deux régions. Notre étude confirme que cette espèce peut être considérée comme spécialiste de micromammifères. Les prédateurs spécialistes sont d’ordinaire plus vulnérables que les généralistes, et leur spécialisation alimentaire va généralement de pair avec un statut de conservation plus défavorable que pour d’autres prédateurs généralistes. Nos résultats ont des implications pour la conservation et la viabilité à long terme de cette espèce endémique et menacée d’Afrique méridionale.

Understanding the dynamics of biological communities is a central aim of ecological research. Contemporary environmental change reinforced this interest: in order to predict how communities will react to environmental change, we have to understand the processes driving their dynamics. Ultimately, the dynamics of a community depends on the reproduction, mortality and dispersal of its component individuals, and on how these demographic processes are altered by environmental factors and biotic interactions. A general understanding of biological communities is unlikely to arise from a species-specific approach that attempts to quantify all pairwise interactions between species. Instead, it seems promising to pursue a trait-based research program that quantifies how variation in the performance of species and individuals is shaped by the interplay of functional traits, biotic interactions and environmental factors. In this thesis, I investigated how functional plant traits determine plant-plant, plant-pollinator and plant-herbivore interactions in space and time, and how these spatiotemporal interactions affect the long-term fecundity of plants. In the South African Fynbos biome (a global biodiversity hotspot), I studied a species-rich, ecologically and economically important group of woody plants (genus Protea) and its interactions with pollinators and seed predators. The objectives of this thesis were: (1) to combine plant traits and high-resolution maps of Protea communities in order to quantify the landscapes of nectar sugar and seed crops that plant communities provide for pollinators and seed predators, (2) to examine how sugar landscapes shape pollinator behaviour, and how pollinator behaviour and pollinator-mediated interactions between plants affect the reproduction of Protea individuals, (3) to study how the spatial structure of plant communities and seed crop landscapes determine direct and predator-mediated interactions between plants, and (4) to understand h, Räumliche und Zeitliche Interaktionen zwischen Pflanzen, Pflanzen und ihren Bestäubern und Räubern spielen eine Schlüsselrolle in der Dynamik von terrestrischen Gemeinschaften. Doch in der Ökologie fehlt weitgehend ein quantitatives Verständnis der Merkmale und Prozesse, die sowohl räumliche und zeitliche Interaktionen einschließen. Deshalb untersuchte ich in dieser Doktorarbeit, wie funktionale Pflanzenmerkmale Pflanzen-Pflanzen-Interaktionen und Pflanzen-Tier-Interaktionen in Raum und Zeit bestimmen, und wie diese räumlich-zeitliche Interaktionen die Pflanzenreproduktion beeinflussen. Ich studierte eine artenreiche, ökologisch und ökonomisch wichtige Gruppe von südafrikanischen Büschen (Gattung Protea) mit ihren wichtigsten Bestäubern (Cape Sugarbird, Promerops cafer and sunbird, Anthobaphes violacea) in der Cape Floristic Region (CFR). Durch die Kombination von Experimenten und Beobachtungen in verschiedenen Protea Gesellschaften die mit hoher Auflösung kartiert wurden, untersuchte ich wie die räumliche und zeitliche Verteilung von Protea-Ressourcen („Ressourcen-Landschaften") die Verhaltensweisen von Bestäubern prägt und wie sich Nachbarpflanzen auf die Verhaltensweisen von Bestäubern auswirken und im Umkehrschluss wie sich die Bestäuber auf die Reproduktion von Protea Individuen auswirkt. Darüber hinaus studierte ich, wie Ressourcen-Landschaften die Konkurrenz und die Prädationsrate beeinflusst und wie sich die Kombination von beiden auf die Dynamik der Protea-Gesellschaften auswirkt. Um dies zu tun, habe ich Pflanzenmerkmale durch raumzeitliche Interaktionen aus der Perspektive der beiden Pflanzen und Tiere quantifiziert und analysierte Interaktionen zwischen Protea Individuen (insgesamt 129750 Protea Positionen mit 22 Arten in 27 verschiedene Pflanzengesellschaften). The timing of breeding can strongly influence individual breeding performance and fitness. Seasonal declines in breeding parameters have been often documented in birds, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. Fewer studies have investigated whether seasonal declines in productivity vary in space, which would have implications for a species' population dynamics across its distributional range. We report here on variation in the timing of breeding in the Black Harrier (Circus maurus), an endangered and endemic raptor to Southern Africa. We investigated how key breeding parameters (clutch size, nesting success and productivity) varied with the timing of breeding, weather conditions (rainfall and temperature) and between contrasted regions (coastal vs. interior-mountain). Black Harrier onset of breeding extended over an 8-month period, with a peak of laying between mid-August and end of September. We show a marked seasonal decline in all breeding parameters. Importantly, for clutch size and productivity these seasonal declines differed regionally, being more pronounced in interior-mountain than in coastal regions, where the breeding season was overall shorter. Timing of breeding, clutch size and productivity were also partly explained by weather conditions. In coastal regions, where environmental conditions, in particular rainfall, appear to be less variable, the timing of breeding matters less for breeding output than in interior-mountain regions, and breeding attempts thus occurred over a longer period. The former areas may act as population sources and be key in protecting the long-Term population viability of this threatened endemic raptor. This study provides unique evidence for a regionally variable seasonal decline in breeding performance with implications for population biology and conservation.

AimsBark thickness–stem diameter relationships are non-linear above a stem diameter threshold in many woody species, which makes relative bark thickness measures dependent on the range of stem diameters that are sampled. This influences the appropriateness of different methods for comparing fire responses of woody plants across studies. Here we develop a framework for bark thickness comparisons by evaluating relative bark thickness estimates and bark thickness predictions obtained from linear and curved models fitted to raw and log-transformed bark–stem data. We use this framework to contrast bark thickness among fynbos and savanna plant functional groups.LocationFynbos (17 species) and savanna (21 species) systems in South Africa.MethodsThe linear subset of bark–stem data was identified using a three-step procedure. Linear regressions (with and without an intercept) and curved models (allometric and modified exponential models) were fitted to the linear subset and complete raw bark–stem data set, respectively. In addition, linear regression models were fitted to the log-transformed complete bark–stem data set. Regression slopes and bark thickness predictions obtained from these different approaches were compared, to determine which method provides the most robust metric for comparing bark thickness. Bark thickness was compared among fynbos resprouter guilds and acacias from low- and high-fire savannas.ResultsThe slope of the regression model fitted to the linear subset of raw bark–stem data provides a reliable metric for general comparisons of relative bark thickness. Bark thickness predictions from the curved and log models were comparable at 20-cm stem diameter, but the log model underestimated bark thickness at 5 cm for certain species. Relative bark thickness was significantly higher in: (1) fynbos fire resisters and epicormic resprouters than in non-resprouters; and (2) acacias from high- vs low-fire savannas.ConclusionsThe

The big importance of insects and their ecological services to the human kind is a big issue in today’s society. Many people question the use of pesticides and are blaming chemicals and conventional farming for the loss of beneficial insects. With this in mind people instead turn to the organic farming. The aim of this study was to try and find out if organic farming benefits the diversity of insects. The study was performed on a farm in South Africa which practice both conventional and organic farming and also has a natural Fynbos field on its property. The insect diversity was compared in these three different fields. The collecting of insects was performed by using two different methods, using pan traps and pitfall traps. This study shows that there is a significant difference in the amount of species among the different fields, with a significant higher insect diversity in the Fynbos compared to the conventional farming area, and the diversity of insects in the organic farming is somewhere between the natural Fynbos and the conventional farming. In conclusion this study stress that we need more understanding about what critical factors in the organic farming that supports higher diversity and the importance of surrounding farms that also may play a role to increase the biological diversity to cultivated fields.

Aim To evaluate the evolutionary dynamics of the ecological niche by quantifying the modes and rates of ecological niche evolution (with a particular focus on climatic parameters) and species diversification. Location Greater Cape Floristic Region, southern Africa. Methods Using the genus Babiana (Iridaceae) from the Cape flora, South Africa, we study the evolutionary dynamics of the ecological niche, which includes a characterization of the ecological niche, an assessment of phylogenetic signal, comparisons of different macroevolutionary models, and the estimation of rates of niche evolution (and their variation within and between clades) and lineage diversification, while accounting for phylogenetic uncertainty. Results A principal components analysis (PCA) identified mean annual precipitation and mean annual temperature as the most important climatic determinants differentiating species within Babiana. All parameters show significant phylogenetic signal, and the best-fit model of evolution is the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process with two distinct precipitation optima for two neighbouring biomes: the Fynbos and the Succulent Karoo. Evolutionary rates of climatic niches vary by more than an order of magnitude over the phylogeny, and rates of niche evolution and lineage diversification are both higher in the Fynbos biome than in the Succulent Karoo. Main conclusions Our results show a possible link between rates of climatic niche evolution and rates of species diversification, indicating that rates of niche evolution might be driving diversification rates.

Agathosma species, which are indigenous to South Africa, are also cultivated for commercial use. Recently growers experienced severe plant loss, and symptoms shown by affected plants suggested that a soilborne disease could be the cause of death. A number of Phytophthora taxa were isolated from diseased plants, and this paper reports their identity, mating type, and pathogenicity to young Agathosma plants. Using morphological and sequence data seven Phytophthora taxa were identified: the A1 mating type of P. cinnamomi var. cinnamomi, P. cinnamomi var. parvispora and P. cryptogea, the A2 mating type of P. drechsleri and P. nicotianae, and two homothallic taxa from the P. citricola complex. The identity of isolates in the P. citricola complex was resolved using reference isolates of P. citricola CIT groups 1 to 5 sensu Oudemans et al. (1994) along with multi-locus phylogenies (three nuclear and two mitochondrial regions), isozyme analyses, morphological characteristics and temperature-growth studies. These analyses revealed the isolates from Agathosma to include P. multivora and a putative novel species, P. taxon emzansi. Furthermore, among the P. citricola reference isolates the presence of a new species was revealed, described here as P. capensis. Findings of our study, along with some recent other studies, have contributed to resolving some of the species complexity within the P. citricola complex, resulting in the identification of a number of phylogenetically distinct taxa. The pathogenicity of representative isolates of the taxa from Agathosma was tested on A. betulina seedlings. The putative novel species, P. taxon emzansi, and P. cinnamomi var. parvispora were non-pathogenic, whereas the other species were pathogenic to this host.

Understanding the processes of biological diversification is a central topic in evolutionary biology. The South African Cape fynbos, one of the major plant biodiversity hotspots out of the tropics, has prompted several hypotheses about the causes of generation and maintenance of biodiversity. Fire has been traditionally invoked as a key element to explain high levels of biodiversity in highly speciose fynbos taxa, such as the genus Erica. In this study, we have implemented a microevolutionary approach to elucidate how plant-response to fire may contribute to explain high levels of diversification in Erica. By using microsatellite markers, we investigated the genetic background of seeder (fire-sensitive) and resprouter (fire-resistant) populations of the fynbos species Erica coccinea. We found higher within-population genetic diversity and higher among-population differentiation in seeder populations and interpreted these higher levels of genetic diversification as a consequence of the comparatively shorter generation times and faster population turnover in the seeder form of this species. Considering that genetic divergence among populations may be seen as the initial step to speciation, the parallelism between these results and the pattern of biodiversity at the genus level offers stimulating insights into understanding causes of speciation of the genus Erica in the Cape fynbos.

The Fynbos biome in the Cape region in South Africa is currently the only production location of Rooibos tea in the world. In addition, biodiversity in the Fynbos biome is very large and unique for the world. This makes Rooibos tea a unique product, the availability of which strongly depends on the dynamics in a bounded territory. Rooibos is sometimes harvested from the wild, but up to 99% of all Rooibos is cultivated. 95% of all Rooibos is produced on large farms or plantations. Such farms, which also exist for potatoes and grapes in the Fynbos biome have a large impact on the ecosystem, especially because large areas have been cleared in the past for their establishment. For instance, ‘an average of 2.7 hectares of virgin land has been cleared for farming every day in the past 15 years’, in the Northern Sandveld.
