1. An in silico approach to predict alterations in the Golgi N-glycosylation machinery

Abstract

Protein glycosylation is responsible for modulating the numerous properties of secreted and membrane proteins. The glycan structures that are produced by the cell in the Golgi apparatus are only partially a result of the transcriptome of the enzymes responsible. The organisation of glycosylation enzymes, including levels and localizations within the Golgi apparatus has only been accessible with advanced microscopy techniques and is limited to a small number of enzymes. In this work a computational model capable of predicting changes in Golgi enzyme localizations and activities informed by glycan profiles has been developed. This model is used to predict the localization of N-linked glycan-modifying enzymes in three human cell lines and then to predict changes in enzyme homeostasis in Cog4-deficient cell lines and upon osteogenic differentiation.

3. Investigating the Effects of Dynamic Social Norms and Conversations about Race on Racial Attitudes and Norm Perceptions among White Americans

Abstract

This dissertation integrates the literatures of social identity, intragroup processes, and cultural psychology to explore how dynamic norms can shift attitudes tied to White racial identity. Four empirical studies on the interplay between White identity, racial attitudes, ingroup conversations about race, and dynamic norms explore potential mechanisms for motivating attitude change within a privileged racial group. Two studies gathered baseline data on norm perceptions and tested the effectiveness of different dynamic norm appeal framings on feelings towards discussing race. Another two experimental conversation studies investigated the effects of brief conversations about race with another White person on behavioral intentions to engage in future conversations about race. There was no effect of a single unscaffolded conversation about race on attitudes toward White privilege. There was a marginal effect for dynamic norm appeals that contextualized the benefits of discussing race on increasing interest in future conversations about race. A dynamic norm appeal and subsequent conversation with a White partner did not significantly influence racial attitudes or perceived normativity of discussing race. Conditional process analysis models revealed a potential mechanism for increasing interest in discussing race by focusing on positive ingroup feelings rather than avoiding potential anxiety and negative feelings. A novel psychological mechanism for studying and intervening on White intragroup processes that examines approach vs. avoidance motivations is discussed.

5. Understanding the identity of lived experience researchers and providers: a conceptual framework and systematic narrative review

Abstract

Background Identity is how we understand ourselves and others through the roles or social groups we occupy. This review focuses on lived experience researchers and providers and the impact of these roles on identity. Lived experience researchers and providers use their lived experience of mental or physical disability either as experts by experience, researchers, peer workers, or mental health professionals with lived experience. They must navigate both professional and personal aspects to their roles which can be complex. Performing roles simultaneously embodying professional and lived experiences contribute towards a lack of clarity to identity. This is not adequately explained by the theoretical evidence base for identity. Main body This systematic review and narrative synthesis aimed to provide a conceptual framework to understand how identity of lived experience researchers and providers is conceptualised. A search strategy was entered into EBSCO to access Academic search complete, CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Psych Articles, and Connected papers. Out of the 2049 yielded papers, thirteen qualitative papers were eligible and synthesised, resulting in a conceptual framework. Five themes explained identity positions: Professional, Service user, Integrated, Unintegrated and Liminal. The EMERGES framework, an original conception of this review, found themes of: Enablers and Empowerment, Motivation, Empathy of the self and others, Recovery model and medical model, Growth and transformation, Exclusion and Survivor roots contributed to lived experience researcher and provider identities. Conclusions The EMERGES framework offers a novel way to understand the identities of lived experience researchers and providers, helping support effective team working in mental health, education, and research settings.

Abstract

Objective Care for fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is considered the most common unmet need among cancer survivors. Yet the prevalence of FCR and predisposing factors remain inconclusive. To support targeted care, we provide a comprehensive overview of the prevalence and severity of FCR among cancer survivors and patients, as measured using the short form of the validated Fear of Cancer Recurrence Inventory (FCRI-SF). We also report on associations between FCR and clinical and demographic characteristics. Methods This is a systematic review and individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis on the prevalence of FCR. In the review, we included all studies that used the FCRI-SF with adult (≥18 years) cancer survivors and patients. Date of search: 7 February 2020. Risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tool. Results IPD were requested from 87 unique studies and provided for 46 studies comprising 11,226 participants from 13 countries. 9311 respondents were included for the main analyses. On the FCRI-SF (range 0–36), 58.8% of respondents scored ≥13, 45.1% scored ≥16 and 19.2% scored ≥22. FCR decreased with age and women reported more FCR than men. FCR was found across cancer types and continents and for all time periods since cancer diagnosis. Conclusions FCR affects a considerable number of cancer survivors and patients. It is therefore important that healthcare providers discuss this issue with their patients and provide treatment when needed. Further research is needed to investigate how best to prevent and treat FCR and to identify other factors associated with FCR. The protocol was prospectively registered (PROSPERO CRD42020142185).

7. Discrete-Time Adaptive Control of a Class of Nonlinear Systems Using High-Order Tuners

Abstract

This paper concerns the adaptive control of a class of discrete-time nonlinear systems with all states accessible. Recently, a high-order tuner algorithm was developed for the minimization of convex loss functions with time-varying regressors in the context of an identification problem. Based on Nesterov's algorithm, the high-order tuner was shown to guarantee bounded parameter estimation when regressors vary with time, and to lead to accelerated convergence of the tracking error when regressors are constant. In this paper, we apply the high-order tuner to the adaptive control of a particular class of discrete-time nonlinear dynamical systems. First, we show that for plants of this class, the underlying dynamical error model can be causally converted to an algebraic error model. Second, we show that using this algebraic error model, the high-order tuner can be applied to provably stabilize the class of dynamical systems around a reference trajectory., Comment: 11 pages, submitted without appendices to ACC 2023

Abstract

The synthesis and characterisation of two novel self-assembled amphiphiles (SSAs) SQS-1 and SQS-2 are reported. Both compounds, based on the squaramide motif, were fully soluble in a range of solvents and were shown to undergo self-assembly through a range of physical techniques. Self-assembly was shown to favour the formation of crystalline domains on the nanoscale but also fibrillar film formation, as suggested by SEM analysis. Moreover, both SQS-1 and SQS-2 were capable of anion recognition in DMSO solution as demonstrated using 1 HNMR and UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy, but displayed lower binding affinities for various anions when compared against other squaramide based receptors. In more competitive solvent mixtures SQS-1 gave rise to a colourimetric response in the presence of HPO4 2 anion when compared against other biologically relevant anions

Abstract

This paper considers the problem of real-time control and learning in dynamic systems subjected to parametric uncertainties. We propose a combination of a Reinforcement Learning (RL) based policy in the outer loop suitably chosen to ensure stability and optimality for the nominal dynamics, together with Adaptive Control (AC) in the inner loop so that in real-time AC contracts the closed-loop dynamics towards a stable trajectory traced out by RL. Two classes of nonlinear dynamic systems are considered, both of which are control-affine. The first class of dynamic systems utilizes equilibrium points %with expansion forms around these points and a Lyapunov approach while second class of nonlinear systems uses contraction theory. AC-RL controllers are proposed for both classes of systems and shown to lead to online policies that guarantee stability using a high-order tuner and accommodate parametric uncertainties and magnitude limits on the input. In addition to establishing a stability guarantee with real-time control, the AC-RL controller is also shown to lead to parameter learning with persistent excitation for the first class of systems. Abstract

As one special type of sustainable energy source, radioisotopes have extremely high energy densities. Electrical generators using the decay heat from these radioisotopes can provide long-lasting power when other types of energy, such as solar or chemical energy, are not available. Starting from the 1960s, radioisotope generators were safely used in numerous space and terrestrial missions, and have powered systems from interstellar spacecraft to lighthouses along the arctic coast. This work reviewed the generator development and critical components that constitute a functional system. Started with a brief generator history, the paper focused on technological aspects including fuel manufacturing, energy conversion elements, thermal insulation, structural materials, prototype measurements, future improvements, and concluded with the safety aspects for both space and terrestrial applications. Radioisotope generators are one example of using nuclear energy in a peaceful way to benefit human be-ings. Plutonium fuel productions were resumed and accelerated in the United States and americium fuel research was actively sponsored by the European Space Agency. Abstract

Radioisotope generators can provide power for several decades without the need of any further energy input, such as solar or chemical energy. A portable radioisotope generator can foresee many applications in future military and civilian uses that require minimum access and maintenance, such as to power sensors in a polar region, on a floating buoy, or undersea. In this work, we report the design, simulation, and measurement results of the thermal insulation of a miniaturized radioisotope system. We tested a prototype powered by an electrical heater with the same size as a plutonium fuel pellet. We tested the material compatibilities and showed the designs suitable for generators using thermoelectric and thermophotovoltaic converters respectively. 13. Radioisotope Thermophotovoltaic Generator Design Methods and Performance Estimates for Space Missions

Abstract

This work provides the design methodology of a radioisotope thermophotovoltaic system (RTPV) using spectral control for space missions. The focus is on the feasibility of a practical system by using two-dimensional micropatterned photonic crystal emitters, selecting the proper thermophotovoltaic cell and insulation material to exclude material incompatibilities, to optimize the system efficiency by impedance matching and to design a radiator with minimum mass. In the last section, a design example is presented based on the tested indium gallium arsenide antimonide (InGaAsSb) cells. It is shown computationally that, in using the experimentally tested InGaAsSb cells, the RTPV generator is expected to reach an efficiency of 8.6% and a specific power of 10.1 W∕kg with advanced radiators. Using the more efficient InGaAs cells, the system can expect to triple the figure of merits of the radioisotope thermoelectric generator, promising to reach ∼18% and 21 W∕kg, respectively. 15. Accurate Parameter Estimation for Risk-aware Autonomous Systems

Abstract

Analysis and synthesis of safety-critical autonomous systems are carried out using models which are often dynamic. Two central features of these dynamic systems are parameters and unmodeled dynamics. This paper addresses the use of a spectral lines-based approach for estimating parameters of the dynamic model of an autonomous system. Existing literature has treated all unmodeled components of the dynamic system as sub-Gaussian noise and proposed parameter estimation using Gaussian noise-based exogenous signals. In contrast, we allow the unmodeled part to have deterministic unmodeled dynamics, which are almost always present in physical systems, in addition to sub-Gaussian noise. In addition, we propose a deterministic construction of the exogenous signal in order to carry out parameter estimation. We introduce a new tool kit which employs the theory of spectral lines, retains the stochastic setting, and leads to non-asymptotic bounds on the parameter estimation error. Unlike the existing stochastic approach, these bounds are tunable through an optimal choice of the spectrum of the exogenous signal leading to accurate parameter estimation. We also show that this estimation is robust to unmodeled dynamics, a property that is not assured by the existing approach. Finally, we show that under ideal conditions with no unmodeled dynamics, the proposed approach can ensure a $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{T})$ regret, matching existing literature. Experiments are provided to support all theoretical derivations, which show that the spectral lines-based approach outperforms the Gaussian noise-based method when unmodeled dynamics are present, in terms of both parameter estimation error and Regret obtained using the parameter estimates with a Linear Quadratic Regulator in feedback.

Abstract

This work provides the design methods and performance estimates of the radioisotope thermophotovoltaic system (RTPV) for terrestrial applications. The modeling is based on an experimentally tested prototype using two-dimensional high temperature photonic crystal to realize spectral control. The design efforts focus on the optimization of the system efficiency and contain the heat source number, the size of the energy conversion elements, the insulation configuration, and the heat sink design. An equivalent circuit model was developed for the thermal and electrical performances. Based on a specific output requirement, an optimized heat source number and energy conversion area can be computed for a certain cell type and insulation design. The selection and characterization of the low bandgap thermophotovoltaic (TPV) cells applicable to the generator are compared and discussed. The generator’s heat sink design uses extended fins and the performance is estimated based on the external operating conditions. Finally, the work provides a design example of a terrestrial RTPV generator with an output level of ∼40 W electrical power (We) using InGaAsSb cell, reaching an efficiency of 8.26%., United States. Abstract

We report measurements of photon and neutron radiation levels observed while transmitting a 0.43 MW electron beam through millimeter-sized apertures and during beam-off, but accelerating gradient RF-on, operation. These measurements were conducted at the Free-Electron Laser (FEL) facility of the Jefferson National Accelerator Laboratory (JLab) using a 100 mev electron beam from an energy-recovery linear accelerator. The beam was directed successively through 6 mm, 4 mm, and 2 mm diameter apertures of length 127 mm in aluminum at a maximum current of 4.3 mA (430 kW beam power). This study was conducted to characterize radiation levels for experiments that need to operate in this environment, such as the proposed DarkLight Experiment. We find that sustained transmission of a 430 kW continuous-wave (CW) beam through a 2 mm aperture is feasible with manageable beam-related backgrounds. We also find that during beam-off, RF-on operation, multipactoring inside the niobium cavities of the accelerator cryomodules is the primary source of ambient radiation when the machine is tuned for 130 mev operation., United States. Abstract

A precise measurement of the proton flux in primary cosmic rays with rigidity (momentum/charge) from 1 GV to 1.8 TV is presented based on 300 million events. Knowledge of the rigidity dependence of the proton flux is important in understanding the origin, acceleration, and propagation of cosmic rays. We present the detailed variation with rigidity of the flux spectral index for the first time. The spectral index progressively hardens at high rigidities.

Abstract

Knowledge of the precise rigidity dependence of the helium flux is important in understanding the origin, acceleration, and propagation of cosmic rays. A precise measurement of the helium flux in primary cosmic rays with rigidity (momentum/charge) from 1.9 GV to 3 TV based on 50 million events is presented and compared to the proton flux. The detailed variation with rigidity of the helium flux spectral index is presented for the first time. The spectral index progressively hardens at rigidities larger than 100 GV. The rigidity dependence of the helium flux spectral index is similar to that of the proton spectral index though the magnitudes are different. Remarkably, the spectral index of the proton to helium flux ratio increases with rigidity up to 45 GV and then becomes constant; the flux ratio above 45 GV is well described by a single power law.

Abstract

We present results from a study of hadronic event structure in high energy e[superscript +]e[superscript −] interactions using the L3 detector at LEP. A new class of event shape distributions are measured at and above the Z boson pole for light quark (u, d, s, c) flavours. Energy flow correlations are studied for all hadronic events. Next-to-leading-log QCD calculations and QCD models with improved leading-log approximations are compared to data and good agreement is found at the Z-pole whereas some discrepancies are observed at higher centre-of-mass energies.

Abstract

We present the precision measurement from May 2011 to May 2017 (79 Bartels rotations) of the proton fluxes at rigidities from 1 to 60 GV and the helium fluxes from 1.9 to 60 GV based on a total of 1×10⁹ events collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer aboard the International Space Station. This measurement is in solar cycle 24, which has the solar maximum in April 2014. We observed that, below 40 GV, the proton flux and the helium flux show nearly identical fine structures in both time and relative amplitude. The amplitudes of the flux structures decrease with increasing rigidity and vanish above 40 GV. The amplitudes of the structures are reduced during the time period, which started one year after solar maximum, when the proton and helium fluxes steadily increase. Above ∼3 GV the p/He flux ratio is time independent. We observed that below ∼3 GV the ratio has a long-term decrease coinciding with the period during which the fluxes start to rise.

Abstract

The Dark Matter Time Projection Chamber (DMTPC) is a low pressure (75 Torr CF 4 ) 10 liter detector capable of measuring the vector direction of nuclear recoils with the goal of directional dark matter detection. In this Letter we present the first dark matter limit from DMTPC from a surface run at MIT. In an analysis window of 80-200 keV recoil energy, based on a 35.7 g-day exposure, we set a 90% C.L. upper limit on the spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross section of 2.0×10 -33 cm2 for 115 GeV/c 2 dark matter particle mass. Abstract

We report on the observation of new properties of secondary cosmic rays Li, Be, and B measured in the rigidity (momentum per unit charge) range 1.9 GV to 3.3 TV with a total of 5.4×10[superscript 6] nuclei collected by AMS during the first five years of operation aboard the International Space Station. The Li and B fluxes have an identical rigidity dependence above 7 GV and all three fluxes have an identical rigidity dependence above 30 GV with the Li/Be flux ratio of 2.0±0.1. The three fluxes deviate from a single power law above 200 GV in an identical way. This behavior of secondary cosmic rays has also been observed in the AMS measurement of primary cosmic rays He, C, and O but the rigidity dependences of primary cosmic rays and of secondary cosmic rays are distinctly different. In particular, above 200 GV, the secondary cosmic rays harden more than the primary cosmic rays.

Abstract

High-power, relativistic electron beams from energy-recovering linacs have great potential to realize new experimental paradigms for pioneering innovation in fundamental and applied research. A major design consideration for this new generation of experimental capabilities is the understanding of the halo associated with these bright, intense beams. In this Letter, we report on measurements performed using the 100 MeV, 430 kW cw electron beam from the energy-recovering linac at the Jefferson Laboratory’s Free Electron Laser facility as it traversed a set of small apertures in a 127 mm long aluminum block. Thermal measurements of the block together with neutron measurements near the beam-target interaction point yielded a consistent understanding of the beam losses. Abstract

We show data from a new type of detector that can be used to determine the neutron flux, the energy distribution, and the direction of motion neutron for both fast and thermal neutrons. Many neutron detectors are plagued by large backgrounds from X-rays and gamma rays, and most current neutron detectors lack single-event energy sensitivity or any information on neutron directionality. Even the best detectors are limited by cosmic ray neutron backgrounds. All applications (neutron scattering and radiography, measurements of solar and cosmic ray neutron flux, measurements of neutron interaction cross-sections, monitoring of neutrons at nuclear facilities, oil exploration, and searches for fissile weapons of mass destruction) will benefit from the improved neutron detection sensitivity and improved measurements of neutron properties made possible by this detector. The detector is free of backgrounds from X-rays, gamma rays, beta particles, relativistic singely charged particles, and cosmic ray neutrons. It is sensitive to thermal neutrons, fission neutrons, and high energy neutrons with detection features distinctive for each energy range. It is capable of determining the location of a source of fission neutrons based on the characteristics of elastic scattering of neutrons by helium nuclei. The detector we have constructed could identify 1 g of reactor grade plutonium, 1 m away, with less than 1 min of observation time., National Science Foundation (U.S.), United States. Abstract

We report a search for the rare decays B+→D+K0 [B superscript + → D superscript + K superscript 0] and B+→D+K*0 [B superscript + → D superscript + K superscript *0] in an event sample of approximately 465×106 BB̅ pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- [e superscript + e superscript -] collider at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. We find no significant evidence for either mode and we set 90% probability upper limits on the branching fractions of B [beta](B+→D+K0) <2.9×10-6 [B superscript + → D superscript + K superscript 0 <2.9 x 10 superscript -6]and B [beta] (B+→D+K*0)<3.0×10-6 [B superscript + → D superscript + K superscript *0 <3.0 x 10 superscript -6]., United States. Abstract

We extend the physics case for a new high-energy, ultra-high statistics neutrino scattering experiment, NuSOnG (Neutrino Scattering On Glass) to address a variety of issues including precision QCD measurements, extraction of structure functions, and the derived Parton Distribution Functions (PDF's). This experiment uses a Tevatron-based neutrino beam to obtain a sample of Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) events which is over two orders of magnitude larger than past samples. We outline an innovative method for fitting the structure functions using a parametrized energy shift which yields reduced systematic uncertainties. High statistics measurements, in combination with improved systematics, will enable NuSOnG to perform discerning tests of fundamental Standard Model parameters as we search for deviations which may hint of "Beyond the Standard Model" physics., National Science Foundation (U.S.), United States. Abstract

We present measurements of the branching fraction and fraction of longitudinal polarization for the decay B[superscript +]-->K[over-bar][superscript *0]K[superscript *+] with a sample of (467±5)×10[superscript 6] BB[over-bar] pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. We obtain the branching fraction Beta(B[superscript +]-->K[over-bar][superscript *0]K[superscript *+])=(1.2±0.5±0.1)×10[superscript -6] with a significance of 3.7 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties. We measure the fraction of longitudinal polarization fL=0.75[subscript -0.26][superscript +0.16]±0.03. Abstract

We present measurements of the branching fraction B and longitudinal polarization fraction fL for B0-->a1(1260)+a1(1260)- decays, with a1(1260)±-->pi-pi+pi±. The data sample, collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, represents 465×106 produced BB̅ pairs. We measure B(B0-->a1(1260)+a1(1260)-)×[B(a1(1260)+-->pi-pi+pi+)]2= (11.8±2.6±1.6)×10-6 and fL=0.31±0.22±0.10, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Abstract

We observe the decays Ds1*(2710)+-->D*K and DsJ*(2860)+-->D*K and measure their branching fractions relative to the DK final state. We also observe, in the D*K mass spectrum, a new broad structure at a mass of (3044±8[subscript stat](+30/-5)[subscript syst]) MeV/c[superscript 2] having a width Gamma=(239±35[subscript stat](+46/-42)[subscript syst]) MeV. Abstract

We present new measurements of time-dependent CP asymmetries for B[superscript 0]-->D(*)[superscript +]D(*)[superscript -] decays using (467±5)×10[superscript 6] B[bar-over B] pairs collected with the BABAR detector located at the PEP-II B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We determine the CP-odd fraction of the B[superscript 0]-->D(*)[superscript +]D(*)[superscript -] decays to be R[subscript ⊥]=0.158±0.028±0.006 and find CP asymmetry parameters S[subscript +]=-0.76±0.16±0.04 and C[subscript +]=+0.00±0.12±0.02 for the CP-even component of this decay and S⊥=-1.80±0.70±0.16 and C[subscript ⊥]=+0.41±0.49±0.08 for the CP-odd component. We measure S=-0.63±0.36±0.05 and C=-0.07±0.23±0.03 for B[superscript 0]-->D(*)[superscript +]D(*)[superscript -], S=-0.62±0.21±0.03 and C=+0.08±0.17±0.04 for B[superscript 0]-->D(*)[superscript +]D(*)[superscript -], and S=-0.73±0.23±0.05 and C=+0.00±0.17±0.03 for B[superscript 0]-->D(*)[superscript +]D(*)[superscript -]. For the B0→D*±D∓ decays, we also determine the CP-violating asymmetry A=+0.008±0.048±0.013. In each case, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. 34. Measurement of the directional sensitivity of DMTPC detectors

Abstract

The Dark Matter Time Projection Chamber (DMTPC) is a direction-sensitive detector designed to measure the direction of recoiling $^{19}$F and $^{12}$C nuclei in low-pressure CF$_4$ gas using optical and charge readout systems. In this paper, we employ measurements from two DMTPC detectors, with operating pressures of 30-60 torr, to develop and validate a model of the directional response and performance of such detectors as a function of recoil energy. Using our model as a benchmark, we formulate the necessary specifications for a scalable directional detector with sensitivity comparable to that of current-generation counting (non-directional) experiments, which measure only recoil energy. Assuming the performance of existing DMTPC detectors, as well as current limits on the spin-dependent WIMP-nucleus cross section, we find that a 10-20 kg scale direction-sensitive detector is capable of correlating the measured direction of nuclear recoils with the predicted direction of incident dark matter particles and providing decisive (3$\sigma$) confirmation that a candidate signal from a non-directional experiment was indeed induced by elastic scattering of dark matter particles off of target nuclei., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures. Abstract

The third international conference on “Cutting Edge Research in Homeopathy” organised by the Homeopathy Research Institute (HRI) was held on the inspiring and historic island of Malta from 9th to 11th of June, 2017. One hundred and two abstracts underwent peer review by the HRI Scientific Advisory Committee and external experts to produce the programme of 36 oral presentations and 37 posters, presented by researchers from 19 countries. The 2.5-day programme covered a diverse range of topics, including quantitative and qualitative clinical research, basic research, veterinary research, and provings. These intensive plenary and parallel sessions were interspersed with multiple opportunities for delegates to discuss and exchange ideas, in particular through interactive panel discussions and a pre-conference workshop. The continuing commitment of the homeopathy research community to generate high-quality studies in this rapidly evolving field was clear. In this conference report, we present highlights from this memorable event.

Abstract

We report the observation of new properties of primary cosmic rays He, C, and O measured in the rigidity (momentum/charge) range 2 GV to 3 TV with 90×10⁶ helium, 8.4×10⁶ carbon, and 7.0×10⁶ oxygen nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during the first five years of operation. Above 60 GV, these three spectra have identical rigidity dependence. They all deviate from a single power law above 200 GV and harden in an identical way.

Abstract

This work describes a prototype of a small-size radioisotope thermophotovoltaic (RTPV) system with the two-dimensional metallic photonic crystal emitter and the low bandgap TPV cell. The project demonstrates the simulation and measurement of a system powered by an electrical heat source that mimics the radioisotope fuel pellet. The photonic crystal and the polished Ta3%W substrate are both used as the emitting surfaces to demonstrate the benefits of spectral control. The rest of the system is thermally insulated to increase the overall system efficiency. The photonic crystal emitter demonstrates four times more output power over a flat metal emitter from the 1 cm[superscript 2] TPV cell. With more cell areas, better TPV cells and improved insulation design, the system is expected to reach an efficiency of 7.8%.

Abstract

The known direction of motion of dark matter particles relative to the Earth may be a key for their unambiguous identification even in the presence of backgrounds. A direction-sensitive detector prototype using a low-density CF₄ gas with a 10 liter fiducial volume is operated for several weeks in a basement laboratory. Abstract

he Dark Matter Time Projection Chamber (DMTPC) collaboration is developing prototype detectors to measure both the energies and directions of nuclear recoils. The intended application is to exploit the expected directional anisotropy of dark matter velocities at Earth to unambiguously observe dark matter induced recoils. The detector consist of low-pressure CF[subscript 4] TPC's with CCD cameras, PMT's, and charge amplifiers for readout. This talk gives an overview of the experiment and describes recent advances in hardware and analysis.

Abstract

This editorial introduces a revised set of publication requirements for papers, submitted to Homeopathy, that involve animal experimentation. Journals that publish studies involving animal experimentation have a major role to play in the maintenance of ethical standards because researchers are reliant upon them for publication of their findings. With an increasing global trend towards greater transparency and accountability in animal experimentation, many academic journals, such as the British Journal of Pharmacology, 1 and 2 are taking action to improve reporting standards. In recognition of this need, members of Homeopathy's Editorial Board have been working together to examine the scientific rationale and the most relevant ethical guidelines for the use of animals in research. In addition, they have examined existing published studies in homeopathy research and current practice within the broad domain of medical research. Each of these aspects has informed the revised publication policy, whose overarching objectives are to maximise the ethical standards and scientific quality of animal research in homeopathy, and thereby ultimately to avoid any unnecessary suffering of animals used in such research. The following description details the background that was considered, the rationale for this development, and the steps that will be taken.

43. Population demography of frillneck lizards (Chlamydosaurus kingii, Gray 1825) in the wet-dry tropics of Australia

Abstract

We explore the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on the population demography of frillneck lizards (Chlamydosaurus kingii) in the Australian wet-dry tropics. Annual growth rates of males were significantly higher across all body sizes compared to females, resulting in a significant larger maximum body size in males. Both male and female lizards were highly philopatric and 81% of the among-year recapture distances were less than 200 m. Juvenile and adult frillnecks were subjected to low but highly variable annual survival rates. Both proportion of juveniles and relative proportion of reproductive females showed extensive among-year variations. No relationship was, however, observed between proportion of gravid females and that of juveniles captured during the subsequent year. High rainfall in January was negatively correlated with recruitment most likely caused by increased egg/embryo mortality due to flooding of nest sites. We therefore suggest that the lack of association between female reproduction and juvenile recruitment was due to the effects of stochastic variation in January rainfall. Lizard numbers increased during the first five years of the study followed by a decline during the subsequent four years. Our analyses show that annual variation in survival constituted the main determinant in driving the annual change in frillneck numbers. Surprisingly, no relationship was observed between fillneck population dynamics and annual variation in juvenile recruitment. We suggest that the 7-years over which these analyses were conducted were insufficient to detect any significant effects of recruitment on lizard numbers, demonstrating the need for long-term studies to accurately document vertebrate population demographic processes in areas experiencing stochastic variations rainfall such as the Australian wet-dry tropics.

44. The association of metacognitive beliefs with emotional distress after diagnosis of cancer.

Abstract

Objective: Emotional distress after a diagnosis of cancer is normal and, for most people, will diminish over time. However, a significant minority of patients with cancer experience persistent or recurrent symptoms of emotional distress for which they need help. A model developed in mental health, the self-regulatory executive function model (S-REF), specifies that maladaptive metacognitive beliefs and processes, including persistent worry, are key to understanding why such emotional problems persist. This cross-sectional study explored, for the first, time whether metacognitive beliefs were associated with emotional distress in a cancer population, and whether this relationship was mediated by worry, as predicted by the S-REF model. Method: Two hundred twenty-nine participants within 3 months of diagnosis of, and before treatment for, primary breast or prostate cancer completed self-report questionnaires measuring anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, metacognitive beliefs, worry, and illness perceptions. Results: Regression analysis showed that metacognitive beliefs were associated with symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD, and explained additional variance in these outcomes after controlling for age, gender, and illness perceptions. Structural equation modeling was consistent with cross-sectional hypotheses derived from the theory that metacognitive beliefs cause and maintain distress both directly and indirectly by driving worry. Conclusions: The findings provide promising first evidence that the S-REF model may be usefully applied in cancer. Further study is required to establish the predictive and clinical utility of these findings.

Abstract

In their classic paper, Kobayashi and Maskawa (1973,“KM”) pointed out that CP violation could be naturally incorporated into the Standard Model (SM) as an irreducible complex phase in the weak interaction quark-flavor-mixing matrix if the number of quark flavors was six. This was remarkable because at that time only the three quarks of the original Gell-Mann (1964) and Zweig (1964a) quark model — i.e., the u-,d- and s-quarks — were experimentally established. The situation changed dramatically in late 1974 with the discovery of the superscript c - quark at Brookhaven Aubert et al., 1974) and SLAC(Augustin et al., 1974) and the 1977 discovery of the superscript b- quark at Fermilab (Herb et al., 1977). By 1980, the KM idea, by then embodied in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark flavor mixing matrix (Cabibbo, 1963; Kobayashi and Maskawa, 1973), was accepted as an integral component of the Standard Model, even though its raison d’etre, the CP-violating complex phase, had not been measured (Kelly et al., 1980)., United States. Abstract

We present a measurement of the cosmic ray (e[superscript +] + e[superscript -]) flux in the range 0.5 GeV to 1 TeV based on the analysis of 10.6 million (e[superscript +] + e[superscript -]) events collected by AMS. The statistics and the resolution of AMS provide a precision measurement of the flux. The flux is smooth and reveals new and distinct information. Above 30.2 GeV, the flux can be described by a single power law with a spectral index γ = -3.170 ± 0.008(stat + syst) ± 0.008(energy scale).

47. Measuring Metacognition in Cancer: Validation of the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 (MCQ-30)

Abstract

Objective The Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 assesses metacognitive beliefs and processes which are central to the metacognitive model of emotional disorder. As recent studies have begun to explore the utility of this model for understanding emotional distress after cancer diagnosis, it is important also to assess the validity of the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 for use in cancer populations. Methods 229 patients with primary breast or prostate cancer completed the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale pre-treatment and again 12 months later. The structure and validity of the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 were assessed using factor analyses and structural equation modelling. Results Confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses provided evidence supporting the validity of the previously published 5-factor structure of the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30. Specifically, both pre-treatment and 12 months later, this solution provided the best fit to the data and all items loaded on their expected factors. Structural equation modelling indicated that two dimensions of metacognition (positive and negative beliefs about worry) were significantly associated with anxiety and depression as predicted, providing further evidence of validity. Conclusions These findings provide initial evidence that the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 is a valid measure for use in cancer populations.

48. A Prospective Study of the Association of Metacognitive Beliefs and Processes with Persistent Emotional Distress After Diagnosis of Cancer

Abstract

Two hundred and six patients, diagnosed with primary breast or prostate cancer completed self-report questionnaires on two occasions: before treatment (T1) and 12 months later (T2). The questionnaires included: the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale; Impact of Events Scale; the Metacognitions Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30) and the Illness Perceptions Questionnaire-revised. A series of regression analyses indicated that metacognitive beliefs at T1 predicted between 14 and 19 % of the variance in symptoms of anxiety, depression and trauma at T2 after controlling for age and gender. For all three outcomes, the MCQ-30 subscale ‘negative beliefs about worry’ made the largest individual contribution with ‘cognitive confidence’ also contributing in each case. For anxiety, a third metacognitive variable, ‘positive beliefs about worry’ also predicted variance in T2 symptoms. In addition, hierarchical analyses indicated that metacognitive beliefs explained a small but significant amount of variance in T2 anxiety (2 %) and T2 depression (4 %) over and above that explained by demographic variables, T1 symptoms and T1 illness perceptions. The findings suggest that modifying metacognitive beliefs and processes has the potential to alleviate distress associated with cancer.

Abstract

Coupled magnetic resonance is considered to be a key enabling technology for mid-range wireless power transfer. Models and systems have hitherto considered linear resonators as underlying dynamics, thereby limiting practical deployability due to the extreme sensitivity in front of parameter mismatch and resonance detuning. In this work, structural nonlinear modeling of constituent elements of the resonant link-resonant coils- is considered to unveil the existence of nonlinear dynamic regimes. The methodology considered to explore the nonlinear behavior is based on a behavioral model consisting of state equations, Floquet theory and Filippov method to study the stability of the periodic regime through the associated monodromy matrix. Abstract

Precision measurements by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station of the primary cosmic-ray electron flux in the range 0.5 to 700 GeV and the positron flux in the range 0.5 to 500 GeV are presented. The electron flux and the positron flux each require a description beyond a single power-law spectrum. Both the electron flux and the positron flux change their behavior at ∼30 GeV but the fluxes are significantly different in their magnitude and energy dependence. Between 20 and 200 GeV the positron spectral index is significantly harder than the electron spectral index. The determination of the differing behavior of the spectral indices versus energy is a new observation and provides important information on the origins of cosmic-ray electrons and positrons.
