The work demonstrates the utilization of fractionalized lignin from the black liquor of soda pulping for the development of starch-lignin biocomposites. The effect of ultrafine friction grinding on lignin particle size and properties of the biocomposites was investigated. Microscopic analysis and membrane filtration confirmed the reduction of lignin particle sizes down to micro and nanoparticles during the grinding process. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy confirmed the compatibility between lignin particles and starch in the composites. The composite films were characterized for chemical structure, ultraviolet blocking, mechanical, and thermal properties. Additional grinding steps led to the reduction of large lignin particles and the produced particles were uniform. The formation of 7.7 to 11.3% lignin nanoparticles was confirmed in the two steps of membrane filtration. The highest tensile strain of the biocomposite films were 5.09 MPa, which displays a 40% improvement compared to starch films. Further, thermal stability of the composite films was better than that of starch films. Dendronized polyethers give rise to columnar LC structures which can successfully act as cation transport materials. Therefore, we prepared two different materials, based on Poly(epichlorohydrin-co-ethylene oxide) (PECH-co-EO) grafted with methyl 3,4,5-tris[4-(n-dodecan-1-yloxy)benzyloxy] benzoate, containing 20% or 40% modified units, respectively. The obtained polymers were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy between crossed polars (POM) and compared to the unmodified PECH-co-EO. In order to reach efficient transport properties, homeotropically oriented membranes were prepared by a fine-tuned thermal annealing treatment and were subsequently investigated by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and dielectric thermal analysis (DETA). We found that the presence of the dendrons induces a main chain partial crystallization of the polyether chain and coherently increases the polymer Tg. This effect is more evident in the oriented membranes. As for copolymer orientation upon annealing, the cooling rate and the annealing temperature were the most crucial factors. DMTA and DETA confirmed that grafting with the dendron strongly hinders copolymer motions, but did not show great differences between unoriented and oriented membranes, regardless of the amount of dendrons.

Bio-molecule capped α-MnO2 nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized from the reduction of KMnO4 via a facile green synthesis route using an aqueous leaf extract of Bryophyllum pinnatum as a reducing and capping agent. The synthesized α-MnO2 nanoparticles were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform - infrared (FT-IR), energy dispersive x-ray (EDX), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques. Experimental results clearly demonstrate the successful synthesis of bio-molecule capped crystalline tetragonal α-MnO2 nanoparticles with the size of 4-18 nm. The magnetic property of the product was evaluated using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and the result reveals that the presently synthesized bio-molecule capped α-MnO2 nanoparticles exhibit ferromagnetic property at room temperature. © 2020 The Author(s). The present work reports the realisation of high-quality crystalline CdS/Mn3O4(CM) nanocomposites by a simple cost-effective chemical method in air atmosphere. The authors have performed theoretical calculations and experimental analysis in order to understand the synthesised nanocomposites. X-ray diffraction results showed that the CM nanocomposites were cubic and orthorhombic mixed structure which is in good agreement with the theoretical studies. Field emission scanning electron microscopy images of CM confirmed the formation of well distributed nanocomposites. The outcomes of DFT calculations provide results for the bandgap calculation of pure CdS, Mn3O4and the CM nanocomposites. Photoluminescence studies with interesting visible light absorption demonstrated the great potentiality of the as-synthesised nanocomposites towards photocatalytic applications that could be a detailed research scope for the authors' future studies. © 2020 Institution of Engineering and Technology. Persuaded by the necessity of finding new sources of antibiotics, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were synthesized by adopting a newly developed green synthesis technique and subsequently, their antibacterial activity against different pathogenic bacteria was evaluated. We have successfully synthesized bio-molecule capped ferromagnetic Ag NPs with an average crystallite size of 13 nm using AgNO3 solution as a precursor and Artocarpus heterophyllus leaf extract as a reducing and capping agent. The characterization of the synthesized Ag NPs was carried out using various techniques such as UV-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetry (TG), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) analyses. After exposing the synthesized Ag NPs to two Gram-positive bacteria-Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus and two Gram-negative bacteria-Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium, the zones of inhibition were found to be 15, 16, 19, and 18 mm, respectively. These results imply that the Artocarpus heterophyllus leaf extract mediated green synthesized bio-molecules encapsulated Ag NPs can be considered as a potential antibiotic against human pathogens which is very encouraging. © The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo is one of the most common titanium alloys for aerospace industry. This alloy experiences oxidation phenomenon at elevated temperatures. In the present study, cyclic thermal treatments were performed in air at 500, 593 and 700 °C, up to 500 cycles, in order to determine the oxidation kinetics and to analyze the oxide scale and alpha-case formation. Moreover, results were compared to those achieved under isothermal conditions to elucidate differences between both thermal conditions. In this sense, metallographic techniques and X-ray diffraction, together with a detailed advanced characterization of the microstructure by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy and Focus Ions Beam, were used to analyze surface oxidation evolution. Results pointed out that cyclic treatments induced a strong increase of the weight gain compared to isothermal treatments. The analysis of the oxide scale revealed the formation of not only rutile, as isothermal treatments, but also anatase. The influence of the combined exposure to water and temperature on the behaviour of polylactide/sisal biocomposites coupled with maleic acid anhydride was assessed through accelerated hydrothermal ageing. The biocomposites were immersed in water at temperatures from 65 to 85 °C, between the glass transition and cold crystallisation of the PLA matrix. The results showed that the most influent factor for water absorption was the percentage of fibres, followed by the presence of coupling agent, whereas the effect of the temperature was not significant. Deep assessment was devoted to biocomposites subjected to hydrothermal ageing at 85 °C, since it represents the extreme degrading condition. The morphology and crystallinity of the biocomposites were evaluated by means of X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The viscoelastic and thermal performance were assessed by means of dynamic mechanic thermal analysis (DMTA) and thermogravimetry (TGA). The presence of sisal generally diminished the thermal stability of the biocomposites, which was mitigated by the addition of the coupling agent. After composite preparation, the effectiveness of the sisal fibre was improved by the crystallisation of PLA around sisal, which increased the storage modulus and reduced the dampening factor. The presence of the coupling agent strengthened this effect. After hydrothermal ageing, crystallisation was promoted in all biocomposites therefore showing more fragile behaviour evidencing pores and cracks. Airport activities can contribute to the emission of ultrafine particles (UFPs) in the environment. The aim of our study is to assess the airborne levels of UFPs in a military airport and in the surrounding area. Four outdoor air samplings were carried out inside a military airport during flight activities, twelve nearby the military airport, five in an urban area, and one in a rural area. We used a portable Electrical Low Pressure Impactor to detect the particle number size distribution as well as the number concentration. Particles were chemically analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscopy. Inside the military airport, we observed an inverse correlation with distance from flight activities. The median UFP count ranged 3.7 × 103 –2.9 × 104 particles/cm3, and the highest UFP count was 4.0 × 106 particles/cm3 (during the taxi and take-off activities). Nearby the airport, UFP number concentrations were more elevated in the winter season and we did not observe a correlation with flight activities. Our results show a constant presence of UFPs regardless of the flight activities nearby the airport. Other anthropic sources may generate UFP concentrations significantly higher than those generated by airport activities

The biorefinery concept requires the development of value-added products, such as materials from biomass, including bark. Suberin is the most abundant component in birch (Betula verrucosa) outer bark and acts as a barrier against the penetration of water and external attacks from microorganisms. The aliphatic domain of suberin is rich in hydroxy fatty acids, such as cis-9,10-epoxy-18- hydroxyoctadecanoic acid. In this study, it was isolated from the outer bark of birch and polymerized to prepare polyepoxy acid (PEA), which was used to impregnate filter papers. After complete drying, PEA-loaded filter papers were placed under UV to crosslink the epoxides through cationic polymerization with a diaryliodonium salt as the photo-initiator. The crosslinking was evaluated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The materials obtained after UV curing showed substantially increased hydrophobicity, decreased moisture absorption, increased tensile strength, and increased ductility. Novel copper-cobalt oxide thin films with different copper/cobalt molar ratios, namely, [Cu]/[Co] = 0.5, 1, and 2, have been successfully coated on aluminum substrates via a simple and cost-effective sol-gel dip-coating method. Coatings were characterized using high resolution synchrotron radiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (SR-XPS) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, in combination with nanomechanical testing and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The surfaces of both [Cu]/[Co] = 0.5 and 1 samples consisted primarily of fine granular nanoparticles, whereas the [Cu]/[Co] = 2 has a smoother surface. The analyses reveal that the increase of copper concentration in the synthesis process tends to promote the formation of octahedral Cu2+ which minimizes the development of octahedral Cu+, and these octahedral Cu2+ ions substitute the Co2+ site in cobalt structure host. The local coordinations of Co, Cu and O are not substantially influenced by the change in the copper to cobalt concentration ratios except for the [Cu]/[Co] = 2 coating where the local coordination appears to slightly change due to the loss of octahedral Cu+. The present film coatings are expected to exhibit good wear resistance especially for the [Cu]/[Co] = 1.0 sample due to its high hardness/elastic modulus (H/E) ratio. Finite element modeling (FEM) indicated that, under spherical loading conditions, the high stress and the plastic deformation were predominantly concentrated within the coating layer, without spreading into the substrate.

A novel type of fiber-optic mercury ion (Hg 2+) sensor was prepared by coating poly (N-ethyl-4-vinylpyridinium chloride) (P4VP·HCl) and poly (sodium-p-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) ultrathin film on the surface of a thin-core fiber modal interferometer (TCFMI) with layer-by-layer (LbL) electrostatic self-assembly method. The fabricated TCFMI Hg 2+ sensor exhibits a high selectivity to Hg 2+ and its detection limit and response time are 10 -9 M and 30 s, respectively. The LbL electrostatic self-assembly process is monitored with a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and UV-vis spectroscopy for film growth. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were used to characterize the morphology of the ultrathin film. Plant cell walls combine mechanical stiffness, strength and toughness despite a highly hydrated state. Inspired by this, a nanostructured cellulose network is combined with an almost viscous polysaccharide matrix in the form of a 50/50 amylopectin-glycerol blend. Homogeneous films with a microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) nanofiber content in the range of 10-70 wt % are successfully cast. Characterization is carried out by dynamic mechanical analysis, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and mercury density measurements. The MFC is well dispersed and predominantly oriented random-in-the-plane. High tensile strength is combined with high modulus and very high work of fracture in the nanocomposite with 70 wt % WC. The objectives of this project include the development of improved field-ion microscopes, several means of image intensification, and experiments to clarify the physical processes of ion image formation. Applications of field ion microscopy to the study of lattice imperfections and to order-disorder structures of Pt-Co alloys are described. A bibliography containing twenty-five publications and twenty presentations at the annual Field Emission Symposia is given. (Author)

A reaction gas system capable of supplying high purity oxygen in the form of a molecular beam to a combined field ion-emission microscope is described. Gas pressure at the emitter could be continuously varied from .001 to 0.000000001 torr. The construction, operation, and calibration of the system are discussed. Also included is a brief discussion of an interrupted time sequence technique used to study oxidation reactions at temperatures from 30 to 900C. (Author)
