- Abstract
English: This study examined the patterns of contact and involvement between adolescents and their nonresident fathers after divorce in an ethnically diverse sample. The data was analysed to determine the role of Lamb, Pleck and Levine’s (1986) three constructs in the involvement of non-resident fathers, i.e. interaction, availability and responsibility. The results indicated that the majority of male and female adolescents reported continued direct and indirect contact with their fathers, regardless of paternal remarriage and the lapse of time since the divorce. In measuring father involvement, the adolescents reported on four aspects of father involvement i.e. financial contributions, shared activities, communication and feelings of emotional closeness. The results on father involvement indicate that most fathers make contributions financially in terms of the payment of maintenance, school fees and pocket money. Adolescents further reported that they spent most of their time with their non-resident fathers engaging in leisure activities such as shopping and frequenting restaurants. Boys reported higher levels of communication and feelings of emotional closeness than girls. Overall, the study postulates that non-resident fathers play a less significant role in providing parental guidance to their children. The most important limitation of the research was indicated as the lack of empirical investigation of mother-child involvement. This study investigated the influence of non-resident fathers’ involvement in the well-being of their adolescent children after divorce. Guided by a systemic ecological framework on father involvement and utilising data from a representative sample of adolescents from intact and divorced families, father involvement was measured by means of the Hawkins Inventory of Father Involvement (IFI). Adolescents’ sense of well-being was measured by means of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ).

- Abstract
"This study was designed to test the influence of the congruence between mothers' and fathers' fathering identity standards on fathers' later involvement with their children. Using two waves of data from the Fragile Families Study of Child Well-being, the effect of identity standard congruence at the time of the child's birth on father involvement one year later was tested using structural equation modeling with 2,107 sets of parents who shared varying relationship statuses (married, cohabiting, romantic noncohabiting, nonromantic). Also tested was whether this effect was mediated by fathers' satisfaction with the father identity and whether parents' relationship status at birth and at one year moderated the effect. Consistent with Burke's (1991, 1997) identity verification model, identity congruence did predict later involvement, such that when identity standards were more congruent, fathers were more involved with their children. Contrary to what was suggested by identity theory, identity satisfaction did not mediate the effect between congruence and involvement, and parents' relationship status only partially moderated the effect. Specifically, the effect of congruence on involvement was not moderated by parents' relationship status, but the association between identity satisfaction and involvement was stronger for noncohabiting fathers than cohabiting fathers. These findings suggest the need for broader conceptualizations of distress within identity theory. Further, it highlights differences between family structures in the ways in which identity translates into behavior -- personal satisfaction with an identity was more strongly associated with involvement when fathers did not reside with their children/children's mothers."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

- Abstract
From the stories three common pairs of themes emerged: external locus of control vs. internal locus of control, sense of responsibility vs. love and concern, and humiliation vs. pride. These themes reflected how the fathers interpreted their life, their relationship with the child and their view of self. The findings also showed that the fathers' gradual change from the arrival of the child to age 16 could be demarcated into three stages. The initial stage was filled with feelings of helplessness. The second stage was when their child settled with schooling and they became more stable and positive. The third stage was the stage when the child stepped into adolescence and they began to face their aging process. They began to be aware that they could not take care of their child forever and became anxious and worried about the child's future. From the findings, the social beliefs, values and traditional practices, social context, and personal characteristics were found to be significant factors influencing these fathers' interpretation of their experience in having a child with intellectual disability., The stories of these fathers have provided rich materials for more in-depth understanding of these fathers who had a child with intellectual disability. Based on the findings, recommendations are made to policy-makers, service planners and practitioners of related disciplines in providing more appropriate services to give support and assistance to fathers and those families with a child with intellectual disability, and also in building up an inclusive society., These 15 fathers were of diversified backgrounds and each of them had their unique story, but they also shared similar experiences in parenting their special child. Generally they shared common characteristics of adhering to the values of traditional Chinese males, while at the same time they also adopted some of the western ways of taking up the roles of a husband and a father. During the interviews, they were able to disclose their long suppressed feelings and reveal their struggles in overcoming the various difficulties in fathering the child. They had pains and sorrows, but they also experienced joy and pride in being the father of a special child. In the course of parenting they showed gradual acceptance of having the child but they also came to understand that their child would be their life-long burden., This study is a narrative analysis of fathers' experiences in having a child with intellectual disability in Hong Kong. The study explored the fathers' subjective interpretation of their lived experiences. It included their reactions in having the special child, their experience of parenting the child, and the meaning derived from the experience. The cultural and contextual factors that had influenced their interpretation of their experience were also explored. Fifteen fathers who had a child aged 12 to 16 with mild grade intellectual disability participated in the study. 10. Fathers' self-perceptions of their parenting role identity and its impact on levels of father-child involvement: A comparison of married and contact fathers

- Abstract
It has been extensively documented that contact fathers decrease involvement with their children after divorce (Amato & Booth, 1996). Role theory purports that this pattern of father involvement after divorce is a result or contact fathers experiencing parental role ambiguity. The constraints of visitation make it difficult to maintain parental roles previously performed in the marriage (Ihinger-Tallman, Pasley & Buchler, 1993). American research has provided support for role theory: however no known equivalent research has been conducted on Australian contact fathers. This study replicated Minton and Pasley's (1996) research with 46 contact and 64 married fathers. Participants completed the Self-Perceptions of the Parental Role Scale (McPhee, Benson & Bullock, 1986) and The Parental Involvement Scale (Ahrons, 1983). The results did not support the hypothesis that contact fathers would identify less with the parental role, compared to married fathers. There was evidence that contact and married fathers perceived themselves to be equally satisfied, competent, integrated and invested in the parental role. As expected, contact fathers were found to be less involved in child-related activities than married fathers. There was modest support for the basic proposition of role theory that the more a father identified with the parental role the more involved he would be with his children. Results also indicated weak, significant correlation between investment, satisfaction and competence in the parental role and involvement. Satisfaction and competence in the parental role were significant predictors of father involvement, however they accounted for little variance in father involvement. Marital status did not moderate the relationship between father parenting role identity and father involvement. Future research endeavours are suggested that explore how contact fathers maintain high identification with the parental role after divorce.

- Abstract
Nonresidential father experiences of family life with their children lack attention in the literature. Nonresidential fathers often suffer considerably, as they attempt to continue their parenting role with limited access lime. Consequently, their relationships with their children may suffer, sometimes resulting in visitation ceasing altogether. Father contact is important to the developmental and psychological well-being of children, yet is often hindered by restricted access, distance, parental conflict and the father's emotional state. Nonresidential father perspectives of family life with their children are explored in this study, to gain insight into nonresidential father experiences. This study replicated a study conducted by S. A. Esposito (1995) and extended it through an exploratory analysis of family functioning. A multimethod approach, recommended for family research, incorporated quantitative and qualitative methodology. A purposive sample included 46 nonresidential fathers, recruited through various means. Five participants were randomly chosen from the main sample for interviewing. The study is in two sections, the replication involving a survey questionnaire, correlational research, cross sectional design and the exploratory analysis, which Involved semi-structured face to face Interviews. Two hypotheses suggested that cohesion and adaptability in the nonresidential father-child family would be predicted by the quality of parental interactions and the quality of father-child interactions. Cohesion and adaptability are measures of family functioning according to the Circumplex Model for Marital and Family Systems. The exploratory Nonresidential Father-Child Families 3 analysis provided explanations of findings from the study and Information regarding the suitability of the model for nonresidential father-child families. The quality of father-child Interactions did predict cohesion in the nonresidential father-child family, but not adaptability. Parenta

- Abstract
Children learn language through social interaction, and those with whom they interact will influence their language development in a variety of ways. Different features of adult speech are likely to be facilitative of children’s language development in different ways. Parents are one group of adults who play a particularly signification role in children’s language acquisitions and development, and the nature and role of their speech to children has been an important research emphasis for the past three decades. Initially mothers' speech was the focus of the studies of parent speech, but since the early 1970s attention has also been given to fathers' speech. Most of the research has investigated fathers' speech by comparing it with mothers' speech. Parents' speech has been found to be very similar in its formal characteristics, but differences are realised in conversational and. functional features. Some of this work also suggests that differences in parents' speech may become more evident as children get older. The present study investigates qualitatively some of the characteristics of parental speech. In particular it seeks to identify characteristics which may predominate in fathers' speech, and thus differentiate it from mothers' speech. The data on which the study is based were collected from five Australian families interacting in a variety of contexts in their own homes. The children were all firstborn, and aged between 2;6 and 3;8 years. Because of its exploratory nature, this study has used various formal conversational and functional measures in the analysis. The analysis of formal features showed fathers’ and mothers’ speech to be very similar, but difference between parents were evident at the conversational and functional levels. These outcomes were consistent with those of comparable overseas research. The conversational and functional analyses included investigation of interactional styles, discourse patterns, Locus of Reference, and use of Linking Ref

- Abstract
Recent research on the effects of divorce indicates that the relationship between ex-spouses is a critical factor in the postdivorce adjustment of mothers, fathers, and children. In this study, guided by General Systems Theory and Ecological Theory, data from 225 divorced fathers was used to explore a set of selected variables which were predicted to affect the quality of their coparental relationships with former spouses. A standard multiple regression analysis revealed that a substantial amount of the variance in coparental relationships was explained by five of the eleven variables under investigation. Fathers who reported a positive coparental relationship with their ex-wives were 1) more satisfied with their custody arrangements, 2) more likely to blame themselves for the breakup of their marriage, 3) discussed fewer topics with their exwives, 4) had higher educational levels, and 5) had greater feelings of closeness to their children predivorce. Implications of the findings for future research and policy are discussed.

- Abstract
The purpose of this investigation was to examine factors considered salient to competent parental functioning by fathers with infants. Only recently has fathers' ability to be sensitive, competent parents for infants been recognized. The void remaining in our knowledge of competent parenting by fathers is an identification and understanding of factors associated with fathers' sensitive involvement with infants. The current study sought to explore the association of paternal, infant, and social contextual characteristics with fathers' behaviors during father-infant play. Sixty couples completed questionnaires when their infants were three months old. Fathers completed measures of locus of control, knowledge of infant development, beliefs of effective parenting practices, value of parenthood, infant temperament, spousal support, and participation in infant care activities. Mothers completed measures of infant temperament, paternal participation in infant care activities, and demographic information. When the infants were five to six months old, fathers were observed interacting with their infants in a free-play situation.

Fresh Air with Terry Gross, the Peabody Award-winning weekday magazine of contemporary arts and issues, is one of public radio's most popular programs. Each week, nearly 4.5 million people listen to the show's intimate conversations broadcast on more than 450 National Public Radio (NPR) stations across the country, as well as in Europe on the World Radio Network. Though Fresh Air has been categorized as a "talk show," it hardly fits the mold. Its 1994 Peabody Award citation credits Fresh Air with "probing questions, revelatory interviews and unusual insights." And a variety of top publications count Gross among the country's leading interviewers. The show gives interviews as much time as needed, and complements them with comments from well-known critics and commentators. - Abstract
The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to examine the impact educational intervention during the postpartum period has on fathers' attitudes toward involvement with their babies, their knowledge of infant capabilities, and their caregiving of their babies; and (2) to validate a research instrument for use with mothers and fathers of newborn infants. It was hypothesized that fathers participating in the educational intervention as compared to a control group would have scores indicating more positive parenting on five Theoretical Factors--(I) Parental knowledge of infant capabilities, (II) Parental perception of infant needs for affection and stimulation, (III) Parental perception of caregiving competence, (IV) Sex-role division of caregiving tasks, and (V) Negative affects of having a new baby. It was also hypothesized that fathers with maternal partners with higher expectations for fathers' involvement in daily caregiving would report more involvement than would those whose maternal partners had lower expectations.

- Abstract
A document from an extensive collection spanning four generations of the Woodward family that operated merchant pig iron companies in West Virginia and Alabama. The collection begins with Stimpson Harvey Woodward (S. H. Woodward), a native of Massachusetts, who moved from Pittsburgh to Wheeling, West Virginia in 1852. He had interests in an iron company as early as 1852 in West Virginia and began Alabama operations in 1869. The family business continued in Alabama until the death of S. H. Woodward's great-grandson in 1965.
