Falkenering har varit en del av den svenska kulturen sedan 500-talet v.t. då de första spåren av rovfågel framträder i gravar från främst Mälardalsområdet och har sedan 2021 klassificeratssom ett av UNESCO:s immateriella kulturarv. Jakt med rovfågel under yngre järnåldern i Skandinavien är ett relativt outforskat ämne som främst har fokuserat på att bekräfta att rovfågel fanns närvarande, spåra praktikens ursprung eller bekräfta en individs status. En definition av falkenering och kriterier för en falkeneringsgrav har tagits fram innan en kvalitativ komparativ analys har utförts på 39 gravar innehållande rovfågelben. Även en djupare analys av gravarna i Rickeby, Sunnerby och Vårberg har genomförts. Analyserna visade att inte alla gravar innehållande rovfågel är högstatusgravar och att rovfåglarnas närvaro troligtvis är mer komplext än enbart falkenering. Jakt med rovfågel kan delas in i nöjesfalkenering och yrkesfalkenering och möjligtvis syns spår av detta bland de undersökta gravarna. Studien visar att tidigare antaganden om att rovfåglar indikerar falkenering, att de enbart hittas i högstatusgravar och att falkenering enbart är en sport för eliten inte är tillräckliga., Falconry has been a part of Swedish culture since the 6th century AD when the first traces of birds of prey appear in graves from the Mälardalen area and has been classified as a cultural heritage by UNESCO since 2021. The practice of hunting with birds of prey during the Late Iron Age in Scandinavia is an underrepresented subject in archaeological studies. The focus has previously been on confirming the presence of raptors in graves, tracing the origin of the practice and confirming the status of an individual. A definition of falconry and criteria for identifying a falconry grave have been developed followed by a qualitative comparative analysis of 39 graves containing raptor bones. A more thorough analysis of the graves in Rickeby, Sunnerby and Vårberg has also been carried out. The results showed that not all graves containing birds of prey are high-status graves and that the presence of raptors is more complex than to be explained by falconry alone. Hunting with raptors can be divided into falconry for entertainment and professional falconry. Traces of the division might be possible to observe among the graves examined. The study shows that previous assumptions that the presence of raptors indicate falconry, that they are only found in high-status graves and that falconry is a sport for the elite are not sufficient.

This is an interesting text because of its length and the quality of its language, with a rich, varied, and specialized vocabulary. It joins two different treatises, copied into a larger 15th-century miscellaneous manuscript, in which other treatises are also collected, such as one on women’s cosmetics, another on cooking, etc. Although the sources of the Llibre dels ocells de caça, o Flors de les receptes medicinals per a ocells de caça seem very abundant, we annotate the edition with the source allowing a more direct comparison because of the proximity between the Latin and Catalan text; namely, the De falconibus by St. Albert the Great, of which there is a partial version in folios 122v to 138v of the manuscript.

El manuscrit 102 que es conserva a la Biblioteca de la Universitat de Barcelona conté dos textos; en primer lloc, una traducció feta per Antoni Canals d’una obra de Petrarca i, en segon lloc, un recull de receptes mèdiques destinades a les aus de caça. Finalment, oferim l’edició crítica d’aquest tractat de falconeria., This is a edition of an anonymous treatise on falconry, written in Catalan, and which can be, most probably, dated back to the 15th century. Manuscript 102, kept in the Library of the University of Barcelona, contains two texts: the first is Antoni Canals’ translation of a text by Petrarch, and the second a text which contains a set of medical prescriptions for game birds. This article consists of three parts: firstly, a short introduction on the writing and contents of the manuscript; secondly, an in-depth lexical analysis of the technical terminology on falconry divided into two parts: a proposal for the classification of the specific lexicon in the different semantic fields, and a glossary of the more relevant terms; and finally, a critical edition of this treatise on falconry.

A collection of texts for falcons’ care, circulating in two manuscripts with a problematic linguistic appearance, is attributed to the intelligence of the Conte Camerlengo Íñigo d’Ávalos. The formal, linguistic and structural characteristics of the “d’Ávalos’ anthology” are presented with particular attention to the context of the two manuscripts mentioned above. Animal intrusion causes significant agricultural losses each year. Wild and domestic animals destroy crops by eating and trampling them, and can pose food safety risks due to the deposition of feces on or near the crops. Birds are one of the most challenging animals to keep out of agricultural fields. Growers try countless methods to deter them, including visual, auditory, tactile, and olfactory means. While some of these methods work some of the time, none provide stand-alone protection all the time. Recently there has been interest in developing technology-based solutions to deter nuisance birds in agricultural settings, while others are exploring more natural methods, including falconry. We provide a general overview of bird deterrent methods that are currently in use in agricultural settings, and explore options for novel methods. We found that very few independent scientific studies have been conducted to assess the efficacy of most bird deterrent methods. Ultimately, a multi-tiered approach using integrated pest management techniques will likely be most useful as it can be tailored to meet the needs of individual farmers.

Durant l’edat mitjana, els tractats de falconeria es dedicaven, entre altres assumptes, a descriure els símptomes i malalties que patien les aus, i oferien com a cures pal·liatives diferents remeis terapèutics a partir de les plantes medicinals. Aquest treball presenta un inventari de termes botànics que registrem en una obra del segle xv, el Llibre de Caça, a més dels vocables corresponents que hem trobat en quatre obres de falconeria medieval de tantes altres llengües romàniques: portuguès, castellà, francès i italià. De cada terme exposem quines propietats curatives tenien, el nom científic de la planta de què procedeix, l’etimologia del mot, juntament amb l’ètim estàndard actual. Finalment presentem una possible classificació dels vocables segons l’etimologia i les llengües., In the Middle Ages, the falconry treaties focused on, among other topics, describing the symptoms and diseases of the birds, and offered as pallative care different therapeutic remedies from medicinal plants. This article presents a list of botanical terms used in five Medieval falconry works in five Romance languages: Portuguese, Spanish, Catalan, French and Italian. From the Latin scientific term, consisting of the genus and species, we propose its etymology together with the current term. Finally, we present a posible classification and distribution by words and languages.

This article explores the role of hunting birds in the definition of the knight in twelfth- and thirteenth-century French chivalric literature. After some introductory remarks on the identity-shaping role of hawks in the hunting practices of medieval aristocracy, the article focuses on the multi-faceted identity correlation between knights and hawks across romance and epic poems. The analysis of episodes drawn from various texts provides evidence of three levels of this human/animal relationship: the use of hawks as aristocratic and chivalric badges (Octavian, Enfances Vivien, Guillaume d’Angleterre); the use of hawks as visual doubles of knights (Anseÿs de Metz, Erec et Enide, Lai de Yonec); the representation of the link between knight and hawk as a flow of actions and values going in both directions of the human/animal divide (Jean Renart’s L’Escoufle). Through this analysis, the study demonstrates that chivalric literature established between knights and hawks a multi-layered and two-fold identity shift, which contributed to convey the ambiguities of the knightly ethical model.

Some species of birds form large flocks that forage on agricultural fields and frequently damage the crop, resulting in significant economic losses. Additionally, by defecating they potentially contaminate the crop and farm equipment with pathogens, which is of special concern for leafy greens that are consumed uncooked. There is a need to find an effective deterrent that is also environmentally friendly, and falconry is an ideal candidate for this purpose. To evaluate falconry as deterrent of nuisance birds in leafy greens field in northern California, we performed a set of trials on a control ranch and a treatment ranch of similar production and landscape characteristics. We identified avian species, counted individuals, and recorded flock size in daily surveys pre-treatment, during treatment (falconry), and post-treatment. Bird abundance was lower in spring than in fall, probably because many fields were fallow in spring. In both seasons, we observed a large daily variation in the bird abundance and their use of the fields in the surveys pre-treatment. In fall, the first trial was interfered by the activity of a falconer in an adjacent vineyard and the harvest of the grapes. Importantly, in the second trial, use of the field (e.g., foraging, etc.) decreased during five days of treatment and continued to be low for three days post-treatment, suggesting a “memory effect” after hazing by falconry. Interestingly, the third fall trial coincided with the end of the leafy greens growing season and showed that falconry successfully minimized use of the field by nuisance birds during peak activity. These results indicate that falconry is an effective measure to protect leafy green crops from fecal contamination and damage, but further research is needed at more farms in different regions, and the effect of using falconry in combination with other non-lethal bird abatement approaches (e.g., audio-visual deterrents) should also be evaluated.

Economic impacts, risk factors, and deterrent strategies related to fruit damage by birds were investigated in a four year study across North America. Here we focus primarily on bird management strategies tested in the Pacific Northwest, including visual deterrents such as hawk-kites, inflatable tube-men, and falconry. Fields protected by professional bird-abatement falconry showed less blueberry damage than non-falconry fields. Neither hawk kites nor kite-falconry combinations showed strong damage prevention. A pilot trial of inflatable tube-men in blueberries showed a potential deterrent effect in one of three blocks. Bird management strategies that are biodiversity-friendly, such as falconry and predator nest boxes, may also be useful in marketing fruit.

In Nederland mag vooralsnog alleen met de inheemse havik en slechtvalk vrij gevlogen worden door valkeniers. Het voorstel voor de Nieuwe Natuurbeschermingswet zou roofvogelhouders de mogelijkheid bieden om in het kader van verjaging bij vliegvelden ook de torenvalk in te zetten. Hier is verkend welke mogelijke nadelige gevolgen een dergelijke uitbreiding kan hebben. Aanbeveling op basis van dit rapport is om niet over te gaan tot uitbreiding van de lijst valkerijvogels met torenvalk. Afgezien van de waarschijnlijk zeer beperkte effecten van torenvalk op vermindering van aanvaringsrisico’s door vogels op vliegvelden, wegen de mogelijke nadelige effecten (toename illegale handel, genetische vervuiling door uitheemse taxons na ontsnapping) niet op tegen het al bestaande gebruik van de reeds toegestane valkerijvogels, vooral de slechtvalk.

The Libre de caça is a manuscript written in Catalan probably towards the end of the 15th century. This technical text compiles hunting, ornithological and medical information, as the falconers needed to have some special knowledge in order to care for the birds. From a linguistic point of view, this text provides a significant lexical corpus mainly related to the semantic field of falconry: types of birds, anatomy of the animals, botany, symptoms and remedies for some illnesses, etc. This article analyses a lexical sub-corpus from this Libre de caça which appears in the Catalan-Valencian-Balearic Dictionary, since for this work a comprehensive selection of this historic manual had been carried out, and we offer a proposal for a classification of the studied words into: hapax legomena, new denotations and newly documented entries.

Peoples' relations to animals and their various roles took many different expressions in the pre-Christian era. In certain contexts animals had practical functions, but others they also had symbolic values. Domsticated animals were a kind of life style metaphors in grave rituals. Wild animals and transformation between humans and animals in pictorial images signified social identity. The archaeological analysis of pre-Christian use of animals, and the interpretation of relations between humans and animals give a historical background to the later textbased Old Norse mythology.

Following the bird brooches and the connotations of falconry decode both a social identiy and a lifestyle, expressed in the aestetics of the time. Obviously, the bird brooches signal a message within the social elite, between men and women, and in a continantal networking, and contemporary travelling, in eastern and westens direction.

The aim of the dissertation is to discuss aristocratic horse-keeping and riding in Late Iron Age central Svealand (e. 550-1060 AD). Horse keeping is studied against the background of historical sources. Horses have been kept out of doors all year round in many areas, with or without human supervision. This was probably also the case during the Iron Age. The system makes possible to keep a herd of horses as an extra resource. The number and quality of these horses could have contributed to their owners' power, wealth and status. Horse-related artefacts from four sites, the boat-grave cemeteries Valsgärde, Vendel, and Tuna in Alsike parish, and the chamber graves from Birka are analysed from a functional viewpoint, focusing on the bits. These are all shown to be snaffle bits. The iconography of Gotlandic picture-stones, runestones from Uppland and picture foils on helmets from Vendel, Valsgärde and Sutton Hoo show proud, well-trained horses on slack reins. This is likely to reflect the ideal of how horses should perform. The sagas are used to discuss the 'ideal' horse of the era. Although the pedigree was of some importance, the quality of the horse was more dependent on abilities such as power and speed. Birds of prey and sighthounds occur in c. 30 graves in Sweden. These varieties of hunting are closely connected to the use of the horse, and to the aristocracy. The find assemblages of graves with birds of prey place 40 % of these graves on the highest social level. Mounted falconers are depicted on runestones and picture-stones. The military use of the horse is discussed in two case studies: a comparative analysis of the 10th century graves with horses/horse tack and weapons in Birka and the boat-grave cemeteries, and a study on the horses, tack and riding depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry. The grave study supports the theory that the southern part of Hemlanden was the cemetery of the hird. On the Bayeux tapestry horses and riders alike are shown to be well trained. T

As the falcon is the official mascot of the USAF Academy, a special attempt is made to acquire a collection of materials on falcons and the art and practice of falconry.

The use of trained falcons and hawks for dispersing pest birds has been mainly limited to airports in Europe and, to a lesser extent, in North America to prevent bird/aircraft strikes. The peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) and the goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) are the raptors used most often. These trained birds can effectively disperse gulls (Larus spp.) and a variety of other pest bird species, although other bird-scaring methods are often equally or more effective and economical. Because of the scarcity of trained raptors and handlers, their use is limited to special situations such as airports where the incidence of bird strikes is potentially high and all possible measures must be taken to assure aircraft safety.

The remains of small animals are seldom recovered in great numbers during archaeological excavation. These taxa are therefore often neglected by zooarchaeologists because species recovered in great quantities are assumed to be the most ‘important’. Zooarchaeological narratives on human interactions with wild fauna are therefore constructed with a bias towards big game hunting and therefore towards adult, most often elite, men whilst other social groups, such as women and children are ignored. This study assesses the potential for research on small wild animals to contribute to human-animal studies, to inform us about the construction of gender identity and to address androcentrism in archaeological research.
