Atopic dermatitis is dominated by a single microbe (Staphylococcus aureus), and associated with a disease relevant host transcriptomic signature enriched for skin barrier function, tryptophan metabolism and immune activation. In contrast, psoriasis is characterized by co-occurring communities of microbes with weak associations with disease related gene expression. Our work provides a basis for biomarker discovery and targeted therapies in skin dysbiosis.

The substellar companion HD206893b has recently been discovered by direct imaging of its disc-bearing host star with the SPHERE instrument. We investigate the atypical properties of the companion, which has the reddest near-infrared colours among all known substellar objects, either orbiting a star or isolated, and we provide a comprehensive characterisation of the host star-disc-companion system. We conducted a follow-up of the companion with adaptive optics imaging and spectro-imaging with SPHERE, and a multiinstrument follow-up of its host star. We obtain a R=30 spectrum from 0.95 to 1.64 micron of the companion and additional photometry at 2.11 and 2.25 micron. We carried out extensive atmosphere model fitting for the companions and the host star in order to derive their age, mass, and metallicity. We found no additional companion in the system in spite of exquisite observing conditions resulting in sensitivity to 6MJup (2MJup) at 0.5" for an age of 300 Myr (50 Myr). We detect orbital motion over more than one year and characterise the possible Keplerian orbits. We constrain the age of the system to a minimum of 50 Myr and a maximum of 700 Myr, and determine that the host-star metallicity is nearly solar. The comparison of the companion spectrum and photometry to model atmospheres indicates that the companion is an extremely dusty late L dwarf, with an intermediate gravity (log g 4.5-5.0) which is compatible with the independent age estimate of the system. Though our best fit corresponds to a brown dwarf of 15-30 MJup aged 100-300 Myr, our analysis is also compatible with a range of masses and ages going from a 50 Myr 12MJup planetary-mass object to a 50 MJup Hyades-age brown dwarf..., Comment: Accepted to A&A

We use spectroscopy in both contact probe and imaging modes to study patients undergoing either colposcopy or treatment for HSIL. Physical models of light propagation in tissue are used to extract parameters related to tissue morphology and biochemistry. Our results show that the transformation zone, the area in which the vast majority of HSILs are found, is spectroscopically distinct from the adjacent squamous mucosa, and that these anatomical differences can directly influence spectroscopic diagnostic parameters. Specifically, we demonstrate that performance of diagnostic algorithms for identifying HSILs is artificially enhanced when clinically normal squamous sites are included in the statistical analysis of the spectroscopic data. We conclude that underlying differences in tissue anatomy can have a confounding effect on diagnostic spectroscopic parameters and that the common practice of including clinically normal squamous sites in cervical spectroscopy results in artificially improved performance in distinguishing HSILs from clinically suspicious non-HSILs. © 2009 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

In the studies, the residual spectrum, the difference between the observed and modeled diffuse reflectance spectra, was attributed to single elastic light scattering from epithelial nuclei, and diagnostic information due to nuclear changes was extracted from it. We show that this picture is incorrect. The actual single scattering signal arising from epithelial nuclei is much smaller than the previously computed residual spectrum, and does not have the wavelength dependence characteristic of Mie scattering. Rather, the residual spectrum largely arises from assuming a uniform hemoglobin distribution. In fact, hemoglobin is packaged in blood vessels, which alters the reflectance. When we include vessel packaging, which accounts for an inhomogeneous hemoglobin distribution, in the diffuse reflectance model, the reflectance is modeled more accurately, greatly reducing the amplitude of the residual spectrum. These findings are verified via numerical estimates based on light propagation and Mie theory, tissue phantom experiments, and analysis of published data measured from Barrett's esophagus. In future studies, vessel packaging should be included in the model of diffuse reflectance and use of model-based LSS should be discontinued. © 2009 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Cultures of the phytoplankton diatom, Pseudonitzschia multiseries, have been harvested under controlled growth conditions ranging from late logarithmic to late stationary phase (17-58 days). The amount of domoic acid (DA) present in the growth media and in the homogenized cells has been determined by HPLC. Defined samples of media, homogenized cells, whole cells, and whole cells in media have been laser excited at 251 nm for the purpose of selectively exciting intense UV resonance Raman spectra from DA in the samples. Neither media nor cell component spectra from algae seriously interfere with DA spectra. The spectral cross sections for the dominant 1652- cm-1 mode of DA have been determined for 242-, 251-, and 257-nm excitation. Maximum sensitivities are achieved with 251-nm excitation because cross sections for DA are a maximum, and interference from other algal components becomes very small. DA concentrations that have been determined with 251-nm excitation by resonance Raman methods correlate closely with values determined independently with HPLC, especially at higher DA concentrations. The UV resonance Raman analysis of DA in phytoplankton algae is shown to be very sensitive and quantitative as well as rapid and nonintrusive.

A summary is presented of a feasibility study for a new concept photon recycling which was proposed as a new means of generating near millimeter wave radiation using gas dynamic cooling. A general theoretical analysis of this concept is presented which shows that small partition fractions and low temperatures lead to an unwieldly geometry for the nozzle design. A multilevel model of energy transfer is presented in the XeF ground electronic state due to collision-induced VT and dissociation processes. The model, whose parameters are based on experimental results presented here and on other recent data, should be useful in accurate simulations of output efficiency and multiline laser oscillation in XeF. Effective lifetimes of individual ground state levels, applicable to two level laser models, are determined from the multilevel model. The effective lifetime of the primary lower laser level, v''=3 is determined to be 4 to 6 nsec for a 1 atm He buffer.

Halogen abstraction reactions, described by equation, RX .CH3 yields R. XCH3 were investigated in solution for R CH3, C2H5, iso-C3H7, t- C4H9, PhCH2, CH2Cl, CHCl2, CCl3 and CF3. Secondary deuterium effect was investigated for CH3 and CF3 addition reactions. Rate constants k sub 2I/k sub 1 and k sub 2Br/k sub 1 were found to be 45 and 3 x 10 to the 3rd power respectively, k sub 1 being the rate constant of the reaction PhCH2 .CH3 yields PhCH2. CH4. The values of k sub 2I/k sub 1 and k sub 2Br/k sub 1 are compared with k sub 2H/k sub 1. The activation energies difference E sub 2I - E sub 1 was determined as - 1.8 Kcal/mole for the temperature range 55-85 C., Report on The Chemistry and Physics of Materials.
