Abstract

Education comes in different ways to fulfil students’ needs and capture their attention to enable them to focus and learn about the topics being taught. History is an important subject and informative and interesting, making students interested. Most students have difficulties in school, especially when studying history, which affects their academic performance.    The researchers made use of the descriptive quantitative method. This method involves the systematic empirical investigation of observable phenomena via statistical, mathematical or computational techniques, the collection, presentation and analysis of data Zorilla (2012). The study's respondents were thirty (30) second-year students majoring in Social Studies at Bestlink College of the Philippines academic year 2021-2022. This study used Purposive Sampling Technique under Non-Probability Sampling, in which researchers rely on their judgement when choosing population members to participate in the survey. Purposive sampling targets a particular group of people. Subjects are selected because of some characteristics (Patton, 1990).

2. Automatic tuning of hyper-parameters of reinforcement learning algorithms using Bayesian optimization with behavioral cloning

Abstract

Optimal setting of several hyper-parameters in machine learning algorithms is key to make the most of available data. To this aim, several methods such as evolutionary strategies, random search, Bayesian optimization and heuristic rules of thumb have been proposed. In reinforcement learning (RL), the information content of data gathered by the learning agent while interacting with its environment is heavily dependent on the setting of many hyper-parameters. Therefore, the user of an RL algorithm has to rely on search-based optimization methods, such as grid search or the Nelder-Mead simplex algorithm, that are very inefficient for most RL tasks, slows down significantly the learning curve and leaves to the user the burden of purposefully biasing data gathering. In this work, in order to make an RL algorithm more user-independent, a novel approach for autonomous hyper-parameter setting using Bayesian optimization is proposed. Data from past episodes and different hyper-parameter values are used at a meta-learning level by performing behavioral cloning which helps improving the effectiveness in maximizing a reinforcement learning variant of an acquisition function. Also, by tightly integrating Bayesian optimization in a reinforcement learning agent design, the number of state transitions needed to converge to the optimal policy for a given task is reduced. Computational experiments reveal promising results compared to other manual tweaking and optimization-based approaches which highlights the benefits of changing the algorithm hyper-parameters to increase the information content of generated data., Comment: Under review at Computational Intelligence

Abstract

Objectives: Few studies have analyzed factors associated with delirium subtypes. In this study, we investigate factors associated with subtypes of delirium only in patients with dementia to provide insights on the possible prevention and treatments. Design: This is a cross-sectional study nested in the “Delirium Day” study, a nationwide Italian point-prevalence study. Setting and Participants: Older patients admitted to 205 acute and 92 rehabilitation hospital wards. Measures: Delirium was evaluated with the 4-AT and the motor subtypes with the Delirium Motor Subtype Scale. Dementia was defined by the presence of a documented diagnosis in the medical records and/or prescription of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors or memantine prior to admission. Results: Of the 1057 patients with dementia, 35% had delirium, with 25.6% hyperactive, 33.1% hypoactive, 34.5% mixed, and 6.7% nonmotor subtype. There were higher odds of having venous catheters in the hypoactive (OR 1.82, 95% CI 1.18-2.81) and mixed type of delirium (OR 2.23, CI 1.43-3.46), whereas higher odds of urinary catheters in the hypoactive (OR 2.91, CI 1.92-4.39), hyperactive (OR 1.99, CI 1.23-3.21), and mixed types of delirium (OR 2.05, CI 1.36-3.07). We found higher odds of antipsychotics both in the hyperactive (OR 2.87, CI 1.81-4.54) and mixed subtype (OR 1.84, CI 1.24-2.75), whereas higher odds of antibiotics was present only in the mixed subtype (OR 1.91, CI 1.26-2.87). Conclusions and Implications: In patients with dementia, the mixed delirium subtype is the most prevalent followed by the hypoactive, hyperactive, and nonmotor subtype. Motor subtypes of delirium may be triggered by clinical factors, including the use of venous and urinary catheters, and the use of antipsychotics. Future studies are necessary to provide further insights on the possible pathophysiology of delirium in patients with dementia and to address the optimization of the management of potential risk factors.

Abstract

Background: Zika virus (ZIKV) infection has been associated with an increased incidence of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) but the relative frequency of acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) and axonal GBS subtypes is controversial. Methods: Twenty-three GBS patients diagnosed according to Brighton criteria during the ZIKV outbreak in Cúcuta, Colombia, were evaluated clinically and electrophysiologically. Electrodiagnosis of GBS subtypes was made according to a recently described criteria set that proved to have a high diagnostic accuracy on the basis of a single test. The electrophysiological features of 34 Italian AIDP patients were used as control. Results: All patients had symptoms compatible with ZIKV infection before the onset of the GBS and the diagnosis of ZIKV infection was confirmed in 69.5 % of patients. Median time from onset of ZIKV infection symptoms to onset of GBS was 6 days (interquartile range, 6-14 days). Cranial nerve palsy was present in 82.6% of patients, facial palsy in 65.2%, autonomic dysfunction in 69.5%, and 43.4% of patients required mechanical ventilation. AIDP was diagnosed in 73.9% of patients. About 50% of nerves of the AIDP patients showed a prevalent demyelinating distal involvement but this pattern was not different from Italian AIDP patients without ZIKV infection. Conclusions: GBS associated with ZIKV infection is clinically characterized by a high frequency of cranial nerve involvement, autonomic dysfunction and necessity of mechanical ventilation indicating an aggressive and severe course. AIDP is the most frequent electrophysiological subtype. 5. Generating Rescheduling Knowledge using Reinforcement Learning in a Cognitive Architecture

Abstract

In order to reach higher degrees of flexibility, adaptability and autonomy in manufacturing systems, it is essential to develop new rescheduling methodologies which resort to cognitive capabilities, similar to those found in human beings. Artificial cognition is important for designing planning and control systems that generate and represent knowledge about heuristics for repair-based scheduling. Rescheduling knowledge in the form of decision rules is used to deal with unforeseen events and disturbances reactively in real time, and take advantage of the ability to act interactively with the user to counteract the effects of disruptions. In this work, to achieve the aforementioned goals, a novel approach to generate rescheduling knowledge in the form of dynamic first-order logical rules is proposed. The proposed approach is based on the integration of reinforcement learning with artificial cognitive capabilities involving perception and reasoning/learning skills embedded in the Soar cognitive architecture. Ensuring flexible and efficient manufacturing of customized products in an increasing dynamic and turbulent environment without sacrificing cost effectiveness, product quality and on-time delivery has become a key issue for most industrial enterprises. A promising approach to cope with this challenge is the integration of cognitive capabilities in systems and processes with the aim of expanding the knowledge base used to perform managerial and operational tasks. In this work, a novel approach to real-time rescheduling is proposed in order to achieve sustainable improvements in flexibility and adaptability of production systems through the integration of artificial cognitive capabilities, involving perception, reasoning/learning and planning skills. 7. Towards Autonomous Reinforcement Learning: Automatic Setting of Hyper-parameters using Bayesian Optimization

Abstract

With the increase of machine learning usage by industries and scientific communities in a variety of tasks such as text mining, image recognition and self-driving cars, automatic setting of hyper-parameter in learning algorithms is a key factor for achieving satisfactory performance regardless of user expertise in the inner workings of the techniques and methodologies. In particular, for a reinforcement learning algorithm, the efficiency of an agent learning a control policy in an uncertain environment is heavily dependent on the hyper-parameters used to balance exploration with exploitation. In this work, an autonomous learning framework that integrates Bayesian optimization with Gaussian process regression to optimize the hyper-parameters of a reinforcement learning algorithm, is proposed. Also, a bandits-based approach to achieve a balance between computational costs and decreasing uncertainty about the Q-values, is presented. 14. Preliminary assessment of the abundance and fishery of snapping shrimp (Alpheus sp.) in Calape, Bohol, Philippines

Abstract

Snapping shrimp Alpheus sp. is abundant in Calape, Bohol, particularly in coastal areas with a wide intertidal zone, mangroves and rich mud banks. Locally known as takla , it is considered as one of the major seafood delicacies in the municipality. An initial assessment of the natural population and fishery of the snapping shrimp was conducted. Using quadrat sampling, mean density was noted at 7 individuals m-2, body weight ranging from 3.87-12.86 g and total length at 4.78-7.44 cm. The largest individual was identified as male having larger claws, the size being two times larger than that found in females. Apart from actual field sampling, a total of 80 shrimp gatherers were surveyed to obtain relevant fishery information for the snapping shrimp. The snapping shrimp is sold in the local public market and traded in hotels and seafood restaurants at PhP50.00 bundle-1 (a bundle averaging 20 pieces) and PhP180.00 a kilo. The current average catch per gatherer is at 75 pieces on a daily basis which is relatively lower compared to the average catch in the 1980s and 1990s ranging from 150-300 pieces day-1. Destruction of mangrove swamps due to fishpond conversion, unabated mangrove cutting for commercial firewood production and unrestricted gathering of snapping shrimps were identified as possible causes for the decline. These baseline data are essential for the local government and the community to come up with appropriate protection and conservation measures. An intensive and comprehensive study on the snapping shrimps ecology and biology also need to be conducted to provide basis for sound and holistic management of this valuable resource.

Abstract

The cyclic and often linear torque-angle relationship of locomotion presents the opportunity to innovate on the design of traditional series-elastic actuators (SEAs). In this paper, a novel modification to the SEA architecture was proposed by adding a clutch in parallel with the motor within the SEA—denoted as a CSEA. This addition permits bimodal dynamics where the system is characterized by an SEA when the clutch is disengaged and a passive spring when the clutch is engaged. The purpose of the parallel clutch was to provide the ability to store energy in a tuned series spring, while requiring only reactionary torque from the clutch. Thus, when the clutch is engaged, a tuned elastic relationship can be achieved with minimal electrical energy consumption. The state-based model of the CSEA is introduced and the implementation of the CSEA mechanism in a powered knee prosthesis is detailed. The series elasticity was optimized to fit the spring-like torqueangle relationship of early stance phase knee flexion and extension during level ground walking. In simulation, the CSEA knee required 70% less electrical energy than a traditional SEA. Future work will focus on the mechanical implementation of the CSEA knee and an empirical demonstration of reduced electrical energy consumption during walking., United States. This work proposes the application of fractal descriptors to the analysis of nanoscale materials under different experimental conditions. We obtain descriptors for images from the sample applying a multiscale transform to the calculation of fractal dimension of a surface map of such image. Particularly, we have used the}Bouligand-Minkowski fractal dimension. We applied these descriptors to discriminate between two titanium oxide films prepared under different experimental conditions. Results demonstrate the discrimination power of proposed descriptors in such kind of application.

19. A Success Story of Philippine Counterinsurgency: A Study of Bohol

Abstract

The Philippine government has been battling a communist insurgency since 1932. Although it was defeated in 1954, it re-emerged in 1968. This new brand of Maoist insurgency has since persisted. At present, it is a major threat to the national security of the Philippines with nationwide influence having both a political and a military arm. The Philippine government, recognizing the gravity of the problem, issued in 2001 the National Internal Security Plan which is a whole of government approach to address insurgency. For its part, the Armed Forces of the Philippines had tried different approaches. These approaches range from traditional military operations to non-traditional ones which require close coordination with other government agencies and the civilian sector. The military has since embarked on counterinsurgency programs in winning the hearts and mind of the people. There were significant gains in the Armed Forces of the Philippines' counterinsurgency operations but such are not decisive to finally put an end to the longest running insurgency in Asia. Certain gaps are to be identified and filled in order to launch effective programs and operations that would fast-track the defeat of insurgency in the Philippines. With the recent launching of the new Internal Peace and Security Plan dubbed as Bayanihan on 1 January 2011, it is both timely and necessary to determine an efficient way to defeat the communist insurgents. Recognizing the recent success of Bohol province in the Philippines in transforming it from an insurgent hotbed in 2001 to an insurgent-free prime tourist destination in 2010, this study endeavors to answer the primary question: What is an effective counterinsurgency framework to defeat the communist insurgency in the Philippines?, The original document contains color images.

20. Contribution à la compréhension de la durabilité à l'écaillage des bétons contenant de la cendre volante et du laitier

L'incorporation des ajouts cimentaires dans le béton est connue pour ses avantages technologiques et environnementaux. Pour assurer une plus grande utilisation des ajouts cimentaires, il faut accroître la connaissance dans ce domaine surtout les facteurs relatifs à la durabilité des ouvrages construits avec les bétons contenant des ajouts minéraux. Jusqu'à présent, la plupart des études sur les bétons contenant de la cendre volante et du laitier semblent s'accorder sur leur moins bonne durabilité à l'écaillage surtout lorsqu'on les compare au béton ordinaire. Les raisons de cette moins bonne performance ne sont pas toutes connues et cela limite bien des fois l'incorporation de la cendre volante et de laitier dans le béton pour des ouvrages fortement exposés aux cycles de gel-dégel en présence de sels fondants. Cette thèse vise la compréhension des problématiques de la durabilité à l'écaillage des bétons contenant des ajouts cimentaires tels la cendre volante et le laitier. Les objectifs sont de mieux comprendre la représentativité et la sévérité relative des essais normalisés ASTM C672 et NQ 2621-900 pour l'évaluation de la durabilité à l'écaillage de ces bétons, d'étudier l'influence de la méthode de mûrissement sur la durabilité à l'écaillage et d'étudier la relation entre la durabilité à l'écaillage et la sorptivité des surfaces de béton ainsi que la particularité de la microstructure des bétons contenant de la cendre volante. Cinq types de bétons à air entraîné contenant 25% et 35% de cendre volante et laitier ainsi que 1% et 2% de fumée de silice ont été produits, mûris selon différentes méthodes et soumis à des essais accélérés selon les deux procédures normalisées ainsi qu'un essai de sorptivité. Earlier work showed that Amazonian biomass burning produces both lofted and initially unlofted emissions in large amounts. A mobile, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) measured the unlofted emissions of 17 trace gases from residual smoldering combustion (RSC) of logs as part of the Tropical Forest and Fire Emissions Experiment (TROFFEE) during the 2004 Amazonian dry season. The RSC emissions were highly variable and the few earlier RSC measurements lay near the high end of combustion efficiency observed in this study. Fuel consumption by RSC was ∼5% of total for a planned deforestation fire. Much regional RSC probably occurs in the residual woody debris burned during pasture maintenance fires. RSC could increase estimated total fire emissions for the Amazon region by 20–50% for several important VOC. FTIR emissions measurements of burning dung (in a pasture) showed high emission ratios for acetic acid and ammonia to CO (6.6 ± 3.4% and 8.9 ± 2.1%). Large emissions of nitrogen containing trace gases from burning dung and crop waste could mean that biomass burning in India produces more particle mass than previously assumed. Measurements of late-stage kiln emissions suggested that VOC/CO may increase as carbonization is extended. A cook stove emitted many VOC and NH3 far outside the range observed for open wood cooking fires. Enclosed/vented cooking stoves may change the chemistry of the smoke that is emitted.

26. Quantitative assay to determine the hydrolytic activity of biotinidase

Abstract

A quantitative assay was standardized to determine the hydrolytic activity of biotinidase in human serum samples. The current Wolf et al. assay uses N-biotinyl-p-aminobenzoic acid as substrate. The assay's precision was improved by the addition of detergents to the sodium nitrite solution. This eliminated the formation of nitrogen bubbles during the diazotation reaction. Freezing and thawing of the serum samples did not affect the hydrolytic activity Farmaco's interference test showed positive results with sulfametoxasol/trimetoprima and procainel benzylpenicilline. The hydrolytic activity of biotinidase averaged 7.04 + 2.2 nmol/min/ml in a group of 205 healthy children. No statistically significant differences in enzymatic activity was observed between variables of sex, races and age group. The standardize assay can determine the hydrolytic activity of biotinidase human serum samples and can confirm the positive cases detected by neonatal screening programs for biotinidase deficiency., El presente trabajo describe la estandarización de un ensayo diseñado para cuantificar la actividad hidrolítica de la enzima biotinidasa en muestras de suero humano, el cual se basa en el método de Wolf y colaboradores, que emplea el N-biotinil-p-aminobenzoico (BPABA) como sustrato. Con la adición de detergentes a la solución de nitrito de sodio, se eliminan las burbujas de nitrógeno formadas durante la reacción de diazotación y se mejora la precisión del ensayo. Se observó que la congelación-descongelación de las muestras de suero no afecta la actividad hidrolitica de la enzima biotinidasa. La evaluación de la interferencia de fármacos en el ensayo mostró que con el sulfametoxasol/trimetoprim y la procainal benzilpenicilina hay desarrollo de color en ausencia del sustrato BPABA. Los valores promedio de actividad hidrolitica de la biotinidasa, obtenidos en un grupo de 205 niños sanos, fue de 7,04 + 2,2 nmol/min/ml. No se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas al evaluar la actividad de la enzima por sexo, raza y grupos de edad. Este ensayo se puede emplear en la determinación de la actividad hidrolítica de la enzima biotinidasa en muestras de suero humano y, específicamente, en la confirmación de los casos detectados por los programas de tamizaje neonatal para la deficiencia de biotinidasa.

27. Success story of Philippine counterinsurgency : a study of Bohol.

Abstract

The Philippine government has been battling a communist insurgency since 1932. Although it was defeated in 1954, it re-emerged in 1968. This new brand of Maoist insurgency has since persisted. At present, it is a major threat to the national security of the Philippines with nationwide influence having both a political and a military arm. The Philippine government, recognizing the gravity of the problem, issued in 2001 the National Internal Security Plan which is a whole of government approach to address insurgency. For its part, the Armed Forces of the Philippines had tried different approaches. These approaches range from traditional military operations to non-traditional ones which require close coordination with other government agencies and the civilian sector. The military has since embarked on counterinsurgency programs in winning the hearts and mind of the people. There were significant gains in the Armed Forces of the Philippines' counterinsurgency operations but such are not decisive to finally put an end to the longest running insurgency in Asia. Certain gaps are to be identified and filled in order to launch effective programs and operations that would fast-track the defeat of insurgency in the Philippines. With the recent launching of the new Internal Peace and Security Plan dubbed as Bayanihan on 1 January 2011, it is both timely and necessary to determine an efficient way to defeat the communist insurgents. Recognizing the recent success of Bohol province in the Philippines in transforming it from an insurgent hotbed in 2001 to an insurgent-free prime tourist destination in 2010, this study endeavors to answer the primary question: "What is an effective counterinsurgency framework to defeat the communist insurgency in the Philippines?"

Abstract

This report describes a detailed investigation of the atmospheric reactions of hydrazine (N2H4), monomethylhydrazine (MMH), and unsymmetrically dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) relevant to assessments of the impact of their releases to the atmosphere as a result of their wide use as fuels for military purposes. Experiments were conducted in 3800 l and 6400 l Teflon reaction chambers, with reactant and product concentrations measured by long pathlength (68.3-102.4 m) Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy.

Abstract

Relatively little work has been done on the atmospheric chemistry of nitrogen-containing compounds such as amines and hydrazines, which are widely used in industrial and military applications. However the discovery of compounds such as N-nitrosamines in the environment and concern regarding their impact on man indicate the need to further elucidate the role of nitrogenous compounds in the atmosphere. The Air Force is presently assessing the environmental impact of the Space Transportation System which uses hydrazines as one of the fuels. In addition, hydrazine is used as a propellant in the F-16 for emergency power. Both uses will result in potential atmospheric releases which should be controlled to a degree dictated by the impact of hydrazines on ambient air quality. Thus, the present study wa designed to experimentally evaluate the atmospheric fate of unsubstituted hydrazine (N2H4), monomethylhydrazine (MMH), and unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH).

Abstract

The purpose of this work is to investigate the infrared spectra of saturated aliphatic nitriles in the cesium bromide region. This region of the spectrum is especially sensitive to slight changes in molecular structure since the bands are often due to bending modes involving the carbon skeleton. Consequently, the analyst may be able to use these spectra to characterize aliphatic nitriles in a more specific manner than can be done in the NaCl region.
