- Abstract
Planning to meet the needs of the future is a critical concern of an Arizona school district. The Mesa Action Planning System (MAPS) provides a framework for community involvement with a 200-member community-based planning committee, selected from constituent groups, and a 12-member steering committee. The planning committee will receive a summary of major external trends in the areas of life-style, social change, demographic shifts, economics, technology, employment, education, law, finance, and curriculum. In addition, materials from the detailed resource manual "Toward the Year 2000--An Overview of Major Trends Affecting Schools of the Future" will be presented. The committee will be asked to discuss the materials and use a questionnaire to: (1) evaluate the likelihood that the specified trends will happen, and when; (2) identify the challenges; and (3) suggest changes to the district. The results of the questionnaire, including sections mailed to a random sample of community residents, will be analyzed for strategic educational planning. The appendices comprise 90 percent of the document and contain the questionnaire, the executive summary of the resource manual, and the resource manual. Included are 29 references; 12 figures and 7 tables are distributed throughout the appendices. (MLF)
