Abstract: Sub-Saharan Africa is under-represented in global biodiversity datasets, particularly regarding the impact of land use on species’ population abundances. Drawing on recent advances in expert elicitation to ensure data consistency, 200 experts were convened using a modified-Delphi process to estimate ‘intactness scores’: the remaining proportion of an ‘intact’ reference population of a species group in a particular land use, on a scale from 0 (no remaining individuals) to 1 (same abundance as the reference) and, in rare cases, to 2 (populations that thrive in human-modified landscapes). The resulting bii4africa dataset contains intactness scores representing terrestrial vertebrates (tetrapods: ±5,400 amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals) and vascular plants (±45,000 forbs, graminoids, trees, shrubs) in sub-Saharan Africa across the region’s major land uses (urban, cropland, rangeland, plantation, protected, etc.) and intensities (e.g., large-scale vs smallholder cropland). This dataset was co-produced as part of the Biodiversity Intactness Index for Africa Project. Abstract: Die Gruppe der Studierenden an Hochschulen ist durch eine deutliche Heterogenität bspw. bezüglich der nominellen Eingangskenntnisse gekennzeichnet, die aus der Verschiedenheit der jeweiligen Bildungsbiographien resultiert. Um dies zu berücksichtigen, wurde im Rahmen einer Promotion für eine Grundlagenvorlesung im Studiengang Maschinenbau an einer Dualen Hochschule unter Anwendung eines Design-Based-Research-Ansatzes zusammen mit Lernenden eine heterogenitätssensitive, virtuelle Lernumgebung als Teil eines hybriden Lernarrangements entwickelt. Die Entwicklung des Lernarrangements erfolgte auf der Basis eines didaktischen Modells, das durch die Synthese verschiedener (fach-)didaktischer und lernpsychologischer Erkenntnissen erstellt wurde und auf weitere berechnungsintensive Modulfächer ingenieurwissenschaftlicher Fachrichtungen übertragbar ist. Im empirischen Teil der Arbeit wurde das Lernverhaltens der Studierenden mehrerer Jahrgänge, sowohl im Umgang mit der o.g. virtuellen Lernumgebung als auch im Umgang mit konventionell gestalteter Vorlesungen im Verlauf der ersten drei Studiensemester untersucht. Zusammenfassend kann konstatiert werden, dass die Studierenden zwar einerseits individuelle Lernvorgehensweisen zeigen, bei den untersuchten Subgruppen dennoch ein charakteristisches Lernverhalten zu beobachten ist. Die Studierenden zeigen sich in multipler Weise belastet. Für die Gestaltung von (hybriden) Lernarrangements kann abgeleitet werden, dass insbesondere die Identifikation und Berücksichtigung der jeweils schwierigkeitserzeugenden Merkmale der fachlichen Inhalte, die graduelle Steigerung der Komplexität sowie eine enge Passung der Lernmaterialien als vordringlich erscheint. 5. A filter calibration method for laser-scanned weld toe geometries

Abstract: The scanning of weld seams can be used to evaluate the local weld toe geometry for fatigue assessments. Laser scanned weld seam profiles often contain noise which complicates the accurate measurement of the weld toe geometry. For that reason, filtering of the scanned data is necessary. The issue at hand is that a filtering method can significantly affect the measurement results. Therefore, a calibration of the filter input parameters is needed. In this study, a calibration method for filtered laser-scanned weld profiles is presented by using artificial weld toe geometries. The adjustment of different filter functions is achieved by using an optimization method on predefined weld toes with an artificial noise. The resulting input data for the filter functions is tested on a real specimen to verify the method. Through the calibration method it is possible to achieve satisfactory measurement results with precisely set input parameters for the filter functions. The most suitable filter functions for the measurement of the weld toe are the Gaussian and the Lowpass filter. Both functions are adequate as a universally applicable filter. For the evaluation of the measurement results of the radii and angles, a tolerance range is introduced, which is defined by the theoretically minimum measurable radii and angles. Using an adjusted Lowpass filter and a point distance of 0.07 mm set by the laser scanner, a measurement within the tolerance range of 0.2 mm is achievable for the weld toe radius. Abstract: The measurement of deep water gravity wave elevations using in situ devices, such as wave gauges, typically yields spatially sparse data due to the deployment of a limited number of costly devices. This sparsity complicates the reconstruction of the spatio-temporal extent of surface elevation and presents an ill-posed data assimilation problem, which is challenging to solve with conventional numerical techniques. To address this issue, we propose the application of a physics-informed neural network (PINN) to reconstruct physically consistent wave fields between two elevation time series measured at distinct locations within a numerical wave tank. Our method ensures this physical consistency by integrating residuals of the hydrodynamic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) into the PINN’s loss function. We first showcase a data assimilation task by employing constant NLSE coefficients predetermined from spectral wave properties. However, due to the relatively short duration of these measurements and their possible deviation from the narrow-band assumptions inherent in the NLSE, using constant coefficients occasionally leads to poor reconstructions. To enhance this reconstruction quality, we introduce the base variables of frequency and wavenumber, from which the NLSE coefficients are determined, as additional neural network parameters that are fine tuned during PINN training. Abstract: The demand for the application of laminated composite materials is getting significant in the marine industry due to the advantages of use and life, maintenance, and efficiency of requirements and design over conventional materials. However, these materials are known to be highly susceptible to impact damage mainly due to out-of-plane impact events involving multiple interacting failure modes. The novel characteristics of the marine environment, such as extreme environments and long-term seawater influence, pose unique challenges to the resilience of these composites. Considering the expanding use of composite in complex marine structures and challenging marine environment conditions, this paper comprehensively reviews the composite research and development in marine applications to enable predictive models that can be safely used to achieve sustainable, efficient, robust, and safe design of marine engineering structures. The reviews cover the composite applications in the marine industry, novel marine characteristics for composite material, layering mechanism, material characterization, and damage mechanisms in composites due to various loading conditions in four different categories (delamination, matrix cracking, fiber breakage, and complete perforation), parametric joint method (vacuum and adhesive), and the failure criteria (debonding and interfacial delamination). This research brings valuable contributions in enriching the understanding and design of laminated composite structures by adopting the latest research trends. Applying advanced materials and numerical simulation has brought efficiency and effectiveness to analyzing laminated composite characteristics. Abstract: Abstract: The present study examined and compared the impact of exercise training on redox and molecular properties of human microvascular endothelial cells derived from skeletal muscle biopsies from sedentary recent (RPF, ≤ 5 years as postmenopausal) and late (LPF, ≥ 10 years as postmenopausal) postmenopausal females. Resting skeletal muscle biopsies were obtained before and after 8 weeks of intense aerobic exercise training for isolation of microvascular endothelial cells and determination of skeletal muscle angiogenic proteins and capillarisation. The microvascular endothelial cells were analysed for mitochondrial respiration and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), glycolysis and proteins related to vascular function, redox balance and oestrogen receptors. Exercise training led to a reduced endothelial cell ROS formation (∼50%; P = 0.009 and P = 0.020 for intact and permeabilized cells (state 3), respectively) in RPF only, with no effect on endothelial mitochondrial capacity in either group. Basal endothelial cell lactate formation was higher (7%; P = 0.028), indicating increased glycolysis, after compared to before the exercise training period in RPF only. Baseline endothelial G protein-coupled oestrogen receptor (P = 0.028) and muscle capillarisation (P = 0.028) was lower in LPF than in RPF. Muscle vascular endothelial growth factor protein was higher (32%; P = 0.002) following exercise training in LPF only. Exercise training did not influence endothelial cell proliferation or skeletal muscle capillarisation in either group, but the CD31 level in the muscle tissue, indicating endothelial cell content, was higher (>50%; P < 0.05) in both groups. In conclusion, 8 weeks of intense aerobic exercise training reduces ROS formation and enhances glycolysis in microvascular endothelial cells from RPF but does not induce skeletal muscle angiogenesis. Abstract: Porcine respiratory coronavirus (PRCV) was initially detected in Europe, and later in the United States of America (US), in the 1980s. In this study we obtained and compared PRCV sequences from Europe and the US, and investigated how these are related to transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) sequences. The whole genome sequences of Danish (1/90-DK), Italian (PRCV15087/12 III NPTV Parma), and Belgian PRCV (91V44) strains are presented. These sequences were aligned with nine other PRCV sequences from Europe and the US, and 43 TGEV sequences. Following alignment of the PRCV sequences, it was apparent that multiple amino acid variations in the structural proteins were distinct between the European and US strains. The alignments were used to build phylogenetic trees to infer the evolutionary relationships between the strains. In these trees, the European PRCV strains clustered as a separate group, whereas the US strains of PRCV all clustered with TGEVs. more...

Abstract: Transportation is vital due to its capability to transport cargo and people massively. However, if maritime accidents take place, they may cause a significant impact not only on the economy and lives lost but also on the environment. This review paper provides a summary of research and reports on marine accidents, including the inclusion of ship type effects, types of accident events, and the accident consequences, especially to the marine environment. The paper covers global accident data, accident reports from various global accident investigation authorities, and the investigation results. Overall, this study aims to highlight the global tendency of marine accidents and how the accident affects the surrounding site's environmental condition. Additionally, the regulations and activities for environmental recovery are elaborated to tackle the damage caused by the ship accident. Abstract: Over the past few years, marine transportation accidents have decreased significantly. Marine transportation accidents are complex events often caused by multiple factors through the interaction of multiple parties. These accidents can cause loss of human life and property and ecological and environmental damage. They could disrupt the balance of the industrial and economic situation. This paper comprehensively reviews Fire and Explosion (F.E.) accidents in maritime activities. The subject is narrated through a brief history and the resulting impact on the surrounding marine ecosystem. Then, the study summarizes the policies and regulations derived from international maritime agencies that have governed prevention and countermeasures. Therefore, preliminary research on enhancing the safety and security of composite-based structures is summarized in this review to highlight protection and prevention programs in the maritime scope. Abstract: In 2020, Denmark buried approximately four million culled, farmed mink in mass graves treated with slaked lime due to widespread SARS-CoV-2 infections. After six months, environmental concerns prompted the exhumation of these cadavers. Our analysis encompassed visual inspections, soil pH measurements, and gas emission assessments of the grave environment. Additionally, we evaluated carcasses for decay status, cadaverine content, and the presence of various pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2 and mink coronavirus. Our findings revealed minimal microbial activity and limited carcass decomposition. Although viral RNA from SARS-CoV-2 and mink coronavirus, along with DNA from Aleutian mink disease virus, were detected, the absence of infectious SARS-CoV-2 in cell culture assays suggests slow natural degradation processes. This study provides critical insights for future considerations in managing mass burial scenarios during outbreaks of livestock-associated zoonotic pathogens. more...

Abstract: Background: With the development of immune checkpoint inhibitors for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer, the need for new functional imaging techniques and early response assessments has increased to account for new response patterns and the high cost of treatment. The present study was designed to assess the prognostic impact of dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography (DCE-CT) on survival outcomes in non-small cell lung cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors. Methods: Thirty-three patients with inoperable non-small-cell lung cancer treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors were prospectively enrolled for DCE-CT as part of their follow-up. A single target lesion at baseline and subsequent follow-up examinations were enclosed in the DCE-CT. Blood volume deconvolution (BVdecon), blood flow deconvolution (BFdecon), blood flow maximum slope (BFMax slope) and permeability were assessed using overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) as endpoints in Kaplan Meier and Cox regression analyses. Results: High baseline Blood Volume (BVdecon) (> 12.97 ml × 100 g−1) was associated with a favorable OS (26.7 vs 7.9 months; p = 0.050) and PFS (14.6 vs 2.5 months; p = 0.050). At early follow-up on day seven a higher relative increase in BFdecon (> 24.50% for OS and > 12.04% for PFS) was associated with an unfavorable OS (8.7 months vs 23.1 months; p < 0.025) and PFS (2.5 vs 13.7 months; p < 0.018). The relative change in BFdecon (categorical) on day seven was a predictor of OS (HR 0.26, CI95: 0.06 to 0.93 p = 0.039) and PFS (HR 0.27, CI95: 0.09 to 0.85 p = 0.026). Conclusion: DCE-CT-identified parameters may serve as potential prognostic biomarkers at baseline and during early treatment in patients with NSCLC treated with immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy. more...

Abstract: The JETSCAPE Collaboration reports a new determination of the jet transport parameter $\hat{q}$ in the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) using Bayesian Inference, incorporating all available inclusive hadron and jet yield suppression data measured in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC. This multi-observable analysis extends the previously published JETSCAPE Bayesian Inference determination of $\hat{q}$, which was based solely on a selection of inclusive hadron suppression data. JETSCAPE is a modular framework incorporating detailed dynamical models of QGP formation and evolution, and jet propagation and interaction in the QGP. Virtuality-dependent partonic energy loss in the QGP is modeled as a thermalized weakly-coupled plasma, with parameters determined from Bayesian calibration using soft-sector observables. This Bayesian calibration of $\hat{q}$ utilizes Active Learning, a machine--learning approach, for efficient exploitation of computing resources. The experimental data included in this analysis span a broad range in collision energy and centrality, and in transverse momentum. In order to explore the systematic dependence of the extracted parameter posterior distributions, several different calibrations are reported, based on combined jet and hadron data; on jet or hadron data separately; and on restricted kinematic or centrality ranges of the jet and hadron data. Abstract: A new framework, called x-scape, for the combined study of both hard and soft transverse momentum sectors in high energy proton-proton ($p$-$p$) and proton-nucleus ($p$-$A$) collisions is set up. A dynamical initial state is set up using the 3d-Glauber model with transverse locations of hotspots within each incoming nucleon. A hard scattering that emanates from two colliding hotspots is carried out using the Pythia generator. Initial state radiation from the incoming hard partons is carried out in a new module called I-matter, which includes the longitudinal location of initial splits. The energy-momentum of both the initial hard partons and their associated beam remnants is removed from the hot spots, depleting the energy-momentum available for the formation of the bulk medium. Outgoing showers are simulated using the matter generator, and results are presented for both cases, allowing for and not allowing for energy loss. First comparisons between this hard-soft model and single inclusive hadron and jet data from $p$-$p$ and minimum bias $p$-$Pb$ collisions are presented. Single hadron spectra in $p$-$p$ are used to carry out a limited (in number of parameters) Bayesian calibration of the model. Abstract: The JETSCAPE Collaboration reports the first multi-messenger study of the QGP jet transport parameter $\hat{q}$ using Bayesian inference, incorporating all available hadron and jet inclusive yield and jet substructure data from RHIC and the LHC. The theoretical model utilizes virtuality-dependent in-medium partonic energy loss coupled to a detailed dynamical model of QGP evolution. Tension is observed when constraining $\hat{q}$ for different kinematic cuts of the inclusive hadron data. The addition of substructure data is shown to improve the constraint on $\hat{q}$, without inducing tension with the constraint due to inclusive observables. Abstract: Prompt photons are created in the early stages of heavy ion collisions and traverse the QGP medium without any interaction. Therefore, photon-triggered jets can be used to study the jet quenching in the QGP medium. In this work, photon-triggered jets are studied through different jet and jet substructure observables for different collision systems and energies using the JETSCAPE framework. Since the multistage evolution used in the JETSCAPE framework is adequate to describe a wide range of experimental observables simultaneously using the same parameter tune, we use the same parameters tuned for jet and leading hadron studies. The same isolation criteria used in the experimental analysis are used to identify prompt photons for better comparison. For the first time, high-accuracy JETSCAPE results are compared with multi-energy LHC and RHIC measurements to better understand the deviations observed in prior studies. Abstract: Background: Although there are effective psychological treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), they remain inaccessible for many people. Digitally enabled therapy is a way to overcome this problem; however, there is little evidence on which forms of these therapies are most cost effective in PTSD. We aimed to assess the costeffectiveness of the STOP-PTSD trial, which evaluated two therapist-assisted, internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapies: cognitive therapy for PTSD (iCT-PTSD) and a programme focusing on stress management (iStress-PTSD). Methods: In this health economic evaluation, we used data from the STOP-PTSD trial (n=217), a single-blind, randomised controlled trial, to compare iCT-PTSD and iStress-PTSD in terms of resource use and health outcomes. In the trial, participants (aged >= 18 years) who met DSM-5 criteria for PTSD were recruited from primary care therapy services in South East England. The interventions were delivered online with therapist support for the first 12 weeks, and three telephone calls over the next 3 months. Participants completed questionnaires on symptoms, wellbeing, quality of life, and resource use at baseline, 13 weeks, 26 weeks, and 39 weeks after randomisation. We used a costeffectiveness analysis to assess cost per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) at 39 weeks post-randomisation, from the perspective of the English National Health Service (NHS) and personal social services and on the basis of intention- to-treat for complete cases. Treatment modules and the platform design were developed with extensive input from service users: service users also advised on the trial protocol and methods, including the health economic measures. 24. Fulfillment or status : Job seekers’ reward expectations towards family and non-family employers

Abstract: Limited anecdotal and empirical evidence suggests that family ownership status – whether a company is family-owned or publicly held – may influence job seekers’ intentions to apply. Drawing from the theory of person-organization fit and utilizing qualitative comparative analysis (QCA), we conducted an exploratory study analyzing survey data from 756 senior-level job seekers in Switzerland. Our analysis identified distinct cohorts of job seekers who consistently applied to family-owned versus non-family-owned companies. We discovered two profiles of applicants who seem to favor family employers: Fulfillment Seekers and Reward Seekers. Despite their differences, both profiles share an intrinsic need for praise. In contrast, we identified one profile of non-family firm applicants, Hero Followers, who prioritize neither praise nor pride but have a strong desire to work for an admired superior – the very thing Fulfillment Seekers and Reward Seekers deprioritize. Our findings suggest that distinct groups of job seekers are motivated by different reward combinations: Pay, Perks, Personas, Pride, which they expect to find in either family or non-family companies. Abstract: We study parton energy-momentum exchange with the quark gluon plasma (QGP) within a multistage approach composed of in-medium Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution at high virtuality, and (linearized) Boltzmann transport formalism at lower virtuality. This multistage simulation is then calibrated in comparison with high-pT charged hadrons, D mesons, and the inclusive jet nuclear modification factors, using Bayesian model-to-data comparison, to extract the virtuality-dependent transverse momentum broadening transport coefficient q. To facilitate this undertaking, we develop a quantitative metric for validating the Bayesian workflow, which is used to analyze the sensitivity of various model parameters to individual observables. Abstract: Covering: 2014 to 2023 for metabolomics, 2002 to 2023 for information visualization LC-MS/MS-based untargeted metabolomics is a rapidly developing research field spawning increasing numbers of computational metabolomics tools assisting researchers with their complex data processing, analysis, and interpretation tasks. In this article, we review the entire untargeted metabolomics workflow from the perspective of information visualization, visual analytics and visual data integration. Data visualization is a crucial step at every stage of the metabolomics workflow, where it provides core components of data inspection, evaluation, and sharing capabilities. However, due to the large number of available data analysis tools and corresponding visualization components, it is hard for both users and developers to get an overview of what is already available and which tools are suitable for their analysis. In addition, there is little cross-pollination between the fields of data visualization and metabolomics, leaving visual tools to be designed in a secondary and mostly ad hoc fashion. With this review, we aim to bridge the gap between the fields of untargeted metabolomics and data visualization. First, we introduce data visualization to the untargeted metabolomics field as a topic worthy of its own dedicated research, and provide a primer on cutting-edge visualization research into data visualization for both researchers as well as developers active in metabolomics. We extend this primer with a discussion of best practices for data visualization as they have emerged from data visualization studies. Second, we provide a practical roadmap to the visual tool landscape and its use within the untargeted metabolomics field. Abstract: Additively manufactured (AM) components—either made by laser-powder bed fusion or wire and arc additive manufacturing—typically contain process-related defects on and near surfaces that can be removed by machining. Various studies have shown that post-treatment, such as machining significantly improves the fatigue strength of AM parts. To this day, however, hardly any studies have investigated the fatigue strength of post-treated additively manufactured components with notches. In this study, fatigue tests were performed on plain and notched specimens to determine and compare the crack initiation and crack propagation behavior due to different manufacturing-related effects. Tests were performed on specimens produced by the two aforementioned AM processes and compared to specimens taken from wrought sheets. The fatigue strength of AM materials is influenced by microstructure, defects, residual stress, and notches. PBF-LB/M specimens exhibit the highest fatigue strength in plain, notch-free conditions, attributed to differences in microstructure and static strength affecting fatigue crack initiation. Notched specimens show larger differences among materials, with PBF-LB/M having shorter fatigue crack propagation life related to line-type defect clusters, while the plain PBF-LB/M specimens are less affected as their fatigue strength is primarily determined by fatigue crack initiation. more...

Abstract: This White Paper presents an overview of the current status and future perspective of QCD research, based on the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the 2022 Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting. We present the progress made in the last decade toward a deep understanding of both the fundamental structure of the sub-atomic matter of nucleon and nucleus in cold QCD, and the hot QCD matter in heavy ion collisions. Abstract: OBJECTIVES: To develop treat-to-target (T2T) recommendations in giant cell arteritis (GCA) and polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted to retrieve data on treatment targets and outcomes in GCA/PMR as well as to identify the evidence for the effectiveness of a T2T-based management approach in these diseases. Based on evidence and expert opinion, the task force (29 participants from 10 countries consisting of physicians, a healthcare professional and a patient) developed recommendations, with consensus obtained through voting. The final level of agreement was provided anonymously. RESULTS: Five overarching principles and six-specific recommendations were formulated. Management of GCA and PMR should be based on shared decisions between patient and physician recognising the need for urgent treatment of GCA to avoid ischaemic complications, and it should aim at maximising health-related quality of life in both diseases. The treatment targets are achievement and maintenance of remission, as well as prevention of tissue ischaemia and vascular damage. Comorbidities need to be considered when assessing disease activity and selecting treatment. CONCLUSION: These are the first T2T recommendations for GCA and PMR. Treatment targets, as well as strategies to assess, achieve and maintain these targets have been defined. The research agenda highlights the gaps in evidence and the need for future research. more...

Abstract: The Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is a well-known method for state and parameter estimation in vehicle dynamics. However, for tuning the EKF, knowledge about the process and measurement noise is needed, which is usually unknown. Tuning the noise parameters manually is very time consuming, especially for systems with many states. Automated optimization based on the filtering errors promises less application time and better estimation performance, but also requires computing resources. This work presents two approaches for estimating the noise parameters of an EKF: A particle swarm optimization (PSO) and a gradient-based optimization. The EKF is applied to a nonlinear vehicle model of a tractor-semitrailer for estimating the steering and articulation angle as well as lateral and vertical tire forces based on real measurement data with different trailer loadings. Abstract: Untargeted metabolomics promises comprehensive characterization of small molecules in biological samples. However, the field is hampered by low annotation rates and abstract spectral data. Despite recent advances in computational metabolomics, manual annotations and manual confirmation of in-silico annotations remain important in the field. Here, exploratory data analysis methods for mass spectral data provide overviews, prioritization, and structural hypothesis starting points to researchers facing large quantities of spectral data. In this research, we propose a fluid means of dealing with mass spectral data using specXplore, an interactive Python dashboard providing interactive and complementary visualizations facilitating mass spectral similarity matrix exploration. Specifically, specXplore provides a two-dimensional t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding embedding as a jumping board for local connectivity exploration using complementary interactive visualizations in the form of partial network drawings, similarity heatmaps, and fragmentation overview maps. SpecXplore makes use of state-of-the-art ms2deepscore pairwise spectral similarities as a quantitative backbone while allowing fast changes of threshold and connectivity limitation settings, providing flexibility in adjusting settings to suit the localized node environment being explored. Abstract: Although psychological treatments are broadly recognized as evidence-based interventions for various mental disorders, challenges remain. For example, a substantial proportion of patients receiving such treatments do not fully recover, and many obstacles hinder the dissemination, implementation, and training of psychological treatments. These problems require those in our field to rethink some of our basic models of mental disorders and their treatments, and question how research and practice in clinical psychology should progress. To answer these questions, a group of experts of clinical psychology convened at a Think-Tank in Marburg, Germany, in August 2022 to review the evidence and analyze barriers for current and future developments. After this event, an overview of the current state-of-the-art was drafted and suggestions for improvements and specific recommendations for research and practice were integrated. Recommendations arising from our meeting cover further improving psychological interventions through translational approaches, improving clinical research methodology, bridging the gap between more nomothetic (group-oriented) studies and idiographic (person-centered) decisions, using network approaches in addition to selecting single mechanisms to embrace the complexity of clinical reality, making use of scalable digital options for assessments and interventions, improving the training and education of future psychotherapists, and accepting the societal responsibilities that clinical psychology has in improving national and global health care. Abstract: Prosthetic implants, particularly hip endoprostheses, often lead to stress shielding because of a mismatch in compliance between the bone and the implant material, adversely affecting the implant’s longevity and effectiveness. Therefore, this work aimed to demonstrate a computationally efficient method for density-based topology optimization of homogenized lattice structures in a patient-specific hip endoprosthesis. Thus, the root mean square error (RMSE) of the stress deviations between the physiological femur model and the optimized total hip arthroplasty (THA) model compared to an unoptimized-THA model could be reduced by 81 % and 66 % in Gruen zone (GZ) 6 and 7. However, the method relies on homogenized finite element (FE) models that only use a simplified representation of the microstructural geometry of the bone and implant. The topology-optimized hip endoprosthesis with graded lattice structures was synthesized using algorithmic design and analyzed in a virtual implanted state using micro-finite element (micro-FE) analysis to validate the optimization method. Homogenized FE and micro-FE models were compared based on averaged von Mises stresses in multiple regions of interest. A strong correlation (CCC > 0.97) was observed, indicating that optimizing homogenized lattice structures yields reliable outcomes. 40. From loss to disorder: The influence of maladaptive coping on prolonged grief.

Abstract: Research indicates that post-bereavement coping strategies can be adaptive or maladaptive. Understanding which strategies lead to poorer outcomes is an important clinical and theoretical question with the potential to guide intervention. The Oxford Grief - Coping Strategies scale was developed from interviews with bereaved people with and without prolonged grief disorder (PGD) to assess the frequency of maladaptive cognitive and behavioural strategies after bereavement. Factorial and psychometric validity were assessed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (N = 676). A three-wave cross-lagged panel model (N = 275) was used to assess the predictive validity of the tool in explaining symptoms of PGD. Results supported a four-factor solution (Avoidance, Proximity Seeking, Loss Rumination, Injustice Rumination) with good psychometric properties. The OG-CS predicted prospective symptoms of PGD in the short-term (6-12 months) and long term (12-18 months), controlling for baseline symptoms and autocorrelations. Subscale analyses demonstrated that the use of coping strategies predicted ICD-11 PGD in both the short-term and the long-term. However, avoidance was not predictive of outcomes early in the grieving process. At 6-12 months, avoidance predicted PGD at 12-18 months. more...

Abstract: In the wake of recent trends forcing local news organisations to adjust business models, local news publishers are often challenged with recognising new technologies as business opportunities. This contribution investigates the role of localisation technologies by using an abductive qualitative approach. We analyse how local media managers' everyday activities shape the capability of creating, identifying, and experimenting with new business opportunities in a local news media market - discussed here for location-based services (LBS) - in a case study of a local news market with local journalists with managerial responsibilities and newsroom managers. Doing so, this contribution comments on activities undertaken concerning evolving technologies. The findings indicate that the selected local media managers do not experiment with LBS, and most organisations use LBS only for advertising. We reveal the factors explaining this finding to be the media managers' limited information about technological developments, their lack of experimentation within core areas, and media organisations' constraints to the acceptance of mistakes. more...

Abstract: Biological control of seedborne pathogens and soilborne seedling pathogens is an alternative to chemical seed treatments. Limited survival and shelf life is one of the major bottlenecks for a broader implementation of seed treatments with microbial biological control agents (MBCA). Microbial inocula are typically coated on seed lots that have been dried and cleaned before. After coating, seeds are dried, stored, handled for packaging, distributed and used by the grower. During these processes, conditions challenge survival of the coated MBCA.Systematic analysis of seed technologies including various seed processing steps and seed handling, identified various detrimental conditions for microorganisms during seed coating and thereafter when MBCA-coated seeds are dried, stored and distributed. Screening systems for new antagonists for seed applications should consist of various bioassays simulating very different stress components on the applied microorganisms. Proposed bioassays have in common that viability of the tested microorganisms has to be assessed after exposure to differential conditions. Improved methodology for high throughput viability testing will allow larger screening programs and will support the development of new MBCAs for seed applications. more...

Abstract: Within this work a simulation-based approach using fluid-structure interaction (FSI) for the assessment of sideways launching of ships based on an Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approach is proposed. The results of the ALE approach are compared to common approaches (use of rules / regulations, analytical formulations, model tests and simulations without FSI). Based on the ALE approach two different load mechanism acting upon a ship can be observed: the impact with the water surface and the deceleration of the hull structure. The second load mechanism could only be observed based on the proposed ALE approach. In addition, the influence of different parameters of a sideways launching process is investigated., In dieser Arbeit wird ein simulationsbasierter Ansatz unter Verwendung von Fluid-Struktur-Interaktion (FSI) zur Beurteilung von Querstapelläufen von Schiffen auf Basis einer Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) Methode vorgestellt. Abstract: Ships that are navigating in ice covered waters are at risk of colliding with icebergs or ice floes, which can lead to severe damage to the ship‘s hull in certain conditions. Predicting these loads is of great importance for the design and safety of ships. Ice loads are driven by a range of parameters, including ice properties such as the compressive strength, the geometry of the ship's hull and values related to the interaction (e.g. impact velocity). Classification rules and requirements for polar vessels account for these parameters to a certain extent. However, sea ice exhibits not only variability of its properties but also the geometry of the ice shows a high degree of diversity: icebergs and ice floes exist in multiple different shapes. Therefore, this paper addresses the ice-structure interaction process, focusing on the influence of the initial ice contact shape and its impact on the local load. Additionally, the paper explores the feasibility of pinpointing geometric parameters of the ice responsible for influencing these loads. Ultimately, understanding which ice shape in contact poses the greatest risk would be valuable for improving numerical simulations for the worst case scenario and, consequently, enhancing the safety of ships in ice-prone environments. To achieve this, a comprehensive drop tower test campaign on a small-scale has been conducted at the test facilities of the Hamburg University of Technology. In these experiments, single impacts of differently shaped ice specimens against a rigid 50 mm steel plate in normal direction were investigated. In the experiments, a drop hammer was released from a predefined drop height to realize a brittle failure of the ice at an interaction velocity of about 2000 mm/s. Abstract: The ALICE Collaboration reports a differential measurement of inclusive jet suppression using pp and Pb−Pb collision data at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision sNN−−−√=5.02 TeV. Charged-particle jets are reconstructed using the anti-kT algorithm with resolution parameters R= 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 in pp collisions and R= 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 in central (0−10%), semi-central (30−50%), and peripheral (60−80%) Pb−Pb collisions. A novel approach based on machine learning is employed to mitigate the influence of jet background. This enables measurements of inclusive jet suppression in new regions of phase space, including down to the lowest jet pT≥40 GeV/c at R=0.6 in central Pb−Pb collisions. This is an important step for discriminating different models of jet quenching in the quark-gluon plasma. The transverse momentum spectra, nuclear modification factors, derived cross section, and nuclear modification factor ratios for different jet resolution parameters of charged-particle jets are presented and compared to model predictions. A mild dependence of the nuclear modification factor ratios on collision centrality and resolution parameter is observed. Abstract: The Chiral Magnetic Wave (CMW) phenomenon is essential to provide insights into the strong interaction in QCD, the properties of the quark-gluon plasma, and the topological characteristics of the early universe, offering a deeper understanding of fundamental physics in high-energy collisions. Measurements of the charge-dependent anisotropic flow coefficients are studied in Pb-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision sNN−−−√= 5.02 TeV to probe the CMW. In particular, the slope of the normalized difference in elliptic (v2) and triangular (v3) flow coefficients of positively and negatively charged particles as a function of their event-wise normalized number difference, is reported for inclusive and identified particles. The slope rNorm3 is found to be larger than zero and to have a magnitude similar to rNorm2, thus pointing to a large background contribution for these measurements. Furthermore, rNorm2 can be described by a blast wave model calculation that incorporates local charge conservation. In addition, using the event shape engineering technique yields a fraction of CMW (fCMW) contribution to this measurement which is compatible with zero. This measurement provides the very first upper limit for fCMW, and in the 10-60% centrality interval it is found to be 26% (38%) at 95% (99.7%) confidence level. more...

49. Fully Generalized Reactivity(1) Synthesis

Abstract: Generalized Reactivity(1) (GR(1)) synthesis is a reactive synthesis approach in which the specification is split into two parts: a symbolic game graph, describing the safe transitions of a system, a liveness specification in a subset of Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) on top of it. Many specifications can naturally be written in this restricted form, and the restriction gives rise to a scalable synthesis procedure -- the reasons for the high popularity of the approach. For specifications even slightly beyond GR(1), however, the approach is inapplicable. This necessitates a transition to synthesizers for full LTL specifications, introducing a huge efficiency drop. This paper proposes a synthesis approach that smoothly bridges the efficiency gap from GR(1) to LTL by unifying synthesis for both classes of specifications. The approach leverages a recently introduced canonical representation of omega-regular languages based on a chain of good-for-games co-B\"uchi automata (COCOA). By constructing COCOA for the liveness part of a specification, we can then build a fixpoint formula that can be efficiently evaluated on the symbolic game graph. Abstract: Reservoir computing is a form of machine learning that utilizes nonlinear dynamical systems to perform complex tasks in a cost-effective manner when compared to typical neural networks. Many recent advancements in reservoir computing, in particular quantum reservoir computing, make use of reservoirs that are inherently stochastic. However, the theoretical justification for using these systems has not yet been well established. In this paper, we investigate the universality of stochastic reservoir computers, in which we use a stochastic system for reservoir computing using the probabilities of each reservoir state as the readout instead of the states themselves. In stochastic reservoir computing, the number of distinct states of the entire reservoir computer can potentially scale exponentially with the size of the reservoir hardware, offering the advantage of compact device size. We prove that classes of stochastic echo state networks, and therefore the class of all stochastic reservoir computers, are universal approximating classes. We also investigate the performance of two practical examples of stochastic reservoir computers in classification and chaotic time series prediction. While shot noise is a limiting factor in the performance of stochastic reservoir computing, we show significantly improved performance compared to a deterministic reservoir computer with similar hardware in cases where the effects of noise are small., Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures more...
