Algebraic structures such as the lattices of attractors, repellers, and Morse representations provide a computable description of global dynamics. In this paper, a sheaf-theoretic approach to their continuation is developed. The algebraic structures are cast into a categorical framework to study their continuation systematically and simultaneously. Sheaves are built from this abstract formulation, which track the algebraic data as systems vary. Sheaf cohomology is computed for several classical bifurcations, demonstrating its ability to detect and classify bifurcations.

The primary tumor side is emerging as a prognostic factor for patients with liver metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). In a combined analysis of data from 2 randomized studies, the addition of selective internal radiation therapy to first-line chemotherapy in patients with mCRC was associated with statistically and clinically significant overall survival gains for patients with a right-sided primary tumor. Background(s): The primary tumor side is emerging as a major prognostic factor for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). We examined the survival data from 2 randomized studies to determine whether the outcomes differ between patients with mCRC with right-sided primary (RSP) tumors and those with left-sided primary (LSP) tumors after selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) plus mFOLFOX6 (folinic acid [leucovorin], 5-fluorouracil, oxaliplatin) chemotherapy, versus chemotherapy alone. Patients and Methods: Separate and combined analyses were performed on the data from the SIRFLOX and FOXFIRE global trials, which compared chemotherapy plus SIRT with chemotherapy alone for patients with mCRC liver metastases. The primary tumor side data were prospectively collected. The principal outcome measure was overall survival (OS) stratified by treatment and primary tumor side. Result(s): In the combined analysis of all 739 patients enrolled, SIRT had no effect on OS (median OS, 24.3 vs. 24.6 months; hazard ratio [HR], 1.021; P =.810). For the 179 patients (24.2%) with a RSP tumor, OS was improved with the addition of SIRT (median, 22.0 vs. 17.1 months HR, 0.641; P =.008). The addition of SIRT was not associated with a significant difference in OS among the 540 patients with a LSP tumor (median, 24.6 vs. 26.6 months; HR, 1.120; P =.264). A test of treatment interaction by primary tumor side was statistically significant for RSP and SIRT (P =.002). Soil salinity is a major limitation to cereal production. Breeding new salt-tolerant cultivars has the potential to improve cereal crop yields. In this study, a doubled haploid bread wheat mapping population, derived from the bi-parental cross of Excalibur × Kukri, was grown in a glasshouse under control and salinity treatments and evaluated using high-throughput non-destructive imaging technology. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis of this population detected multiple QTL under salt and control treatments. Of these, six QTL were detected in the salt treatment including one for maintenance of shoot growth under salinity (QG(1–5).asl-7A), one for leaf Na+ exclusion (QNa.asl-7A) and four for leaf K+ accumulation (QK.asl-2B.1, QK.asl-2B.2, QK.asl-5A and QK:Na.asl-6A). The beneficial allele for QG(1–5).asl-7A (the maintenance of shoot growth under salinity) was present in six out of 44 mainly Australian bread and durum wheat cultivars. The effect of each QTL allele on grain yield was tested in a range of salinity concentrations at three field sites across 2 years. In six out of nine field trials with different levels of salinity stress, lines with alleles for Na+ exclusion and/or K+maintenance at three QTL (QNa.asl-7A, QK.asl-2B.2 and QK:Na.asl-6A) excluded more Na+ or accumulated more K+ compared to lines without these alleles. Importantly, the QK.asl-2B.2allele for higher K+ accumulation was found to be associated with higher grain yield at all field sites. This study utilised image-based phenotyping to study genetic variation in chickpea for salinity tolerance in 245 diverse accessions. On average salinity reduced plant growth rate (obtained from tracking leaf expansion through time) by 20%, plant height by 15% and shoot biomass by 28%. Additionally, salinity induced pod abortion and inhibited pod filling, which consequently reduced seed number and seed yield by 16% and 32%, respectively. Importantly, moderate to strong correlation was observed for different traits measured between glasshouse and two field sites indicating that the glasshouse assays are relevant to field performance. Using image-based phenotyping, we measured plant growth rate under salinity and subsequently elucidated the role of shoot ion independent stress (resulting from hydraulic resistance and osmotic stress) in chickpea. Broad genetic variation for salinity tolerance was observed in the diversity panel with seed number being the major determinant for salinity tolerance measured as yield. This study proposes seed number as a selection trait in breeding salt tolerant chickpea cultivars.

On univariate analysis, increased mortality was significantly associated with older age, European ethnicity, MRSA infection, infections not originating from a medical device, sepsis syndrome, pneumonia/empyema, and treatment with a glycopeptide or other non-beta-lactam antibiotic. On multivariable analysis, independent predictors of mortality were age, sepsis syndrome, pneumonia/empyema, device-associated infection with a secondary focus, left-sided endocarditis, and treatment with a glycopeptide such as vancomycin, but not MRSA infection. Conclusion(s): S. aureus bacteraemia is a common infection in both the community and hospitals in Australia and New Zealand, and is associated with appreciable mortality. OBJECTIVE To document the types of, and mortality from, Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia in Australia and New Zealand, and determine factors associated with mortality. DESIGN AND SETTING Prospective observational study in 27 independent or hospital pathology laboratories in Australia (24) and New Zealand (3), employing a web-based database to prospectively record demographic features, selected risk factors, principal antibiotic treatment and mortality data on all patients with positive blood cultures for S. aureus from June 2007 to May 2008. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE 30-day all-cause mortality. RESULTS 1994 episodes of S. aureus bacteraemia were identified, and complete 30-day follow-up data were available for 1865. Most episodes had their onset in the community (60.8%; 95% CI, 58.7%-63.0%). Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) caused 450 episodes (24.1%; 95% CI, 22.2%-25.9%), and 123 of these (27.3%) had a susceptibility profile consistent with community-associated MRSA. All-cause mortality at 30 days was 20.6% (95% CI, 18.8%-22.5%). Silicone rubber formulations used for outdoor high voltage insulation are sometimes reported to be colonized by microorganisms. Different formulations show different sensitivity towards biological growth. In this study five rubbers were tested. Two standard practices were used, ASTM G21-90 and IEC 68-2-10. In addition a new method was developed to measure the rate of colonisation of a sample by biological growth. Results showed that the tested rubbers supported fungal growth when an external carbon source was available. Thus none of the silicones can be called bio-resistant. However the materials are not biodegradable either. This was clearly shown when mould spores were added to the samples in clean water, when none of the rubbers was contaminated. Some of the materials did, however, support growth when only nutrient salts, no carbon source, was added. The most bioresistant formulations contained the flame retardant zinc borate, indicating that this additive suppresses fungal growth. The Terrestrial Navigator, or Terregator, is a mobile robot device designed to provide a reliable and rugged testbed for both indoor and outdoor work in robotic navigation, guidance, sensor interpretation, and architectures. The design of mobile robots involves conflicting needs and a wide mix of disciplines. The Terregator design resolves many such needs through flexible and extensible mechanics, electronics, hardware and software. It is a six-wheeled skid-steer machine utilizing compliant tires for suspension, a hybrid power system provides for different modes and environments during operation and a rugged drive system and integral controller provide a complete package for doing robotics research.

Limited microthermometry suggests that the high-grade visible gold, which occurs with stibnite and other sulphides in quartz veins, had been transported by much cooler fluids than those that deposited the main auriferous sulphide orebody. Significant post-depositional modification of the gold is indicated by intricate textures with associated secondary phases and unusual silver distributions. The host shear zones cut three earlier deformation events and contain fault rocks which indicate multiple ductile-brittle and brittle processes. Stibnite-gold-quartz mineralisation is restricted to separate geological domains and vein episodes. Assimilation-textured quartz usually predates ribbon, buck and breccia quartz, although complex mixtures of quartz are common in the ore shoots. Fluid inclusion and isotopic studies suggest a fluid which initially cooled and decreased in salinity upon contact with the host rock and then remained constant during most of the mineralising event. It is possible that the auriferous fluids contained a component of highly evolved, D-poor meteoric water.
